In the 24th century, humans have colonized the solar system.
The U.N. controls Earth.
Mars is an independent military power.
The inner planets depend on the resources of the asteroid belt.
Belters live and work in space. In the Belt, air and water are more precious than gold.

For decades, tensions have been rising - Earth, Mars and the Belt are now on the brink of war. All it will take is a single spark …

This is an RP partly based on the TV series, Expanse. No I haven’t seen anything but the first season. I just like the basic concepts of an interplanetary setting. I am going to use a Timeline I found online - but after the year 2339 everything changes. (IE no protomolecule stuff, alien tech, no Eros Incident, etc.) But the RP is set to start in the year 2350.

The Expanse

In lieu of the alien stuff in Expanse I have an original alien First Contact mission based partly on the setting of the SYFY series Nightflyers. (Nightflyer is the name of the ship, not a reference to the aliens.) Nightflyers is set in 2093, so there will be a number of differences. The RP setting will be in 2350.

Storyteller’s Note: I so very much tried to organize this better. But all of the facets of this RP are so interdependent that you will have to read ALL of this material to fully understand the setting.

Psionics
This subject is a very touchy one. There will be ONE psionic in the RP run by myself. He is extremely OP and has to be handled with extreme caution. His power is Classified and he is kept in lockdown. The very fact he is onboard should scare the crap out of the crew.

Psi is rated from 1-19.
Psi 1 has shuttle thought, and is about as dead to telepaths as it gets.
Psi 2-10 Psionically dead. The lower they are, the harder it is for a telepath to communicate with them.
Psi 11+ From this level up an L rating is used.

There are three known areas of talent. Telepathy, Clairvoyance and TK. They are generally attained in that order.

L1 These are the lowest level of Talent and the only level that can live without constant monitoring. 90% of all Psi fit into this category. They can learn a single area of talent.

L2 These are required to go through periodic screening and maintain a security clearance. The talent becomes a mixed blessing.

L3 Watched constantly. They have no private life.

L4 Like L3 but worse. They can develop a second area.

L5-6 Constant lockdown. They are considered lethal. Think of the sort of procedures used to handle a BL4 plague.

L7 can develop all three areas.

Attitudes Toward Psi
Fear … and with damned good reason. The higher the rating, the greater the odds of insanity. Psi rated humans are well renowned for killing off whole ships, colonies, prisons. They do not tolerate the presence of normal humans all too often. The reason for this is simple - telepathic noise. They can shut it out, but over time this is fatiguing. The solution for this trip is simple. His quarters will be thought screened. He will also be issued a thought screen to wear during interviews.

Technology
The main drive in use is called the Epstein Drive developed in 2202. It is a very efficient fusion engine. Dr Epstein was lost during the first test of the prototype, but left the plans to his wife - which she sold to Mars.

Weapons are pretty much what we have today, with advances in projectiles and biometric security. Many portable rail guns are available for use with powered armor, but very uncommon as they are not exactly spaceship friendly. Lasers are also in use. They are silent and deadly. These are mostly used on meks in construction and mining.

Cryogenic suspension has been developed, but is generally reserved for medical emergencies or prisons.

Psionic Technology
Mind Shield - a clunky helmet rated from 1 to 4 in both cost and effectiveness. When confronting a L1 to L4, the appropriate helmet must be worn.

Thought Screen - May be worn in lieu of a Mind Shield. Vastly more effective. Must be worn in dealing with L5+.

There are also forms of psi amp technology, but all they really do is offer focus and reduce fatigue.

Politics
There are three main political entities. UN (Earth), Mars, and OPA (Outer Planets Alliance). OPA is viewed by the other two as terrorists. The Belters regard them as a sociopolitical movement.

Belter Creole (aka lang belta)
As a creole language, lang Belta is primarily derived from English, with influences and contributions from languages such as German, Chinese, Romance languages, Hindi, Slavic, and Bantu.
Belter Creole
NO, I don’t expect you to learn this language. The link is just in case you are interested. (I am a former linguist. So, you know, to me it is cool.)

RP Setting and Plot
http://team-dignitas.net/uploads/article_images/Carrier.jpg
Beyond the edge of the solar system just beyond the Oort Cloud (about 100,000 AU) humans discovered what is now believed to be an alien vessel of enormous size travelling past our solar system. At the speed of light it would take 19 months to travel that far.

The Epstein Drive isn’t that fast. Theoretically it can reach a measurable percentage of the speed of light. But at those speeds an impact against even a grain of sand has a kinetic energy of a nuclear magnitude. What is it they say? Necessity is the mother of invention. Humans must have decided the trip was necessary.

They invented some new sort of jumpdrive that would propel them from the interior of the Oort Cloud at a 1000 AU to outside the Oort Cloud and near the passing alien vessel. The ship will reach a speed of 1% the speed of light. The journey to the jump point will take 19 months. Overall the mission will take over three years.

So why the risk of taking a dangerous Psi onboard on such a dangerous extended mission? The answers are simple:

  1. The Psi is needed to operate the jump drive. He is unique in this ability.
  2. Psi energy was detected emanating from the alien vessel. They have responded to no other form of communication. It is hoped the Psi will be able to establish First Contact.

Characters
Psi Handler - This character must be trained in psionic medical technology, thought screen and mind shield maintenance and repair, psychology. The Psi in question is in his late teens.

First Contact Specialist - specialist in alien physiology. Sure it is all theoretical, but that’s what he is trained for. He knows he needs the Psi. That doesn’t mean he trusts the Psi.

Captain - Someone has to be in charge of the ship. The ship may not belong to him, but it and the crew are his responsibility. He has his orders: Escort the First Contact Team to the alien vessel and establish contact. (Nothing says he absolutely needs the Psi. If an alternative can be found, his crew would be happier for it.)

Hydroponics - This person manages the farms that will feed the crew, regenerate air, etc.

Communications Officer

Sensor Op

And other positions….

Yes, a low level Psi could be assigned to the Psi Handler as an assistant. But this should be an L2. It is also possible for an L1 to have gone unnoticed and un awakened. In other words, no skill, and a very open mind to any telepath. Command did NOT want to send more than one Psi.
