He was the result of a tumultuous relationship between a prostitute and a troubled and penniless politician, and the last thing they wanted was Gideon. The moment his father heard that his companion was pregnant, he walked straight out, thinking he couldn't handle it. He had only come for a distraction, a diversion from all that was going down for him. His perfect political reputation had already been tarnished by one scandal---he didn't need another. He was broke, barely able to support himself, and now a prostitute with an unwanted accident? No. He just couldn't handle it.
And so, he walked out on them in a drunken haze, back to blending into the crowd, destined to die before his time.
As for Gideon, some could call him lucky, but his mother would call him a miracle, her redemption. Gideon was close to being killed as his young, unsure mother contemplated abortion, thinking she couldn't possibly handle it. She couldn't possibly give this baby the life it deserved, find a stable job or even fund for its education. Her parents had long ago abandoned her, shunning her away because of her career as a pole dancer and prostitute. As she was thinking deeply about such a life-changing matter, she encountered a preacher from America, who was going out of his way to create a church group in the lower, poorer parts of Moscow, convinced her that abortion was not the way out. With his support and advice, the prostitute gave birth to a strong, healthy baby boy, naming him Gideon, after the preacher she had met, who had destroyed all her doubts. Svetlana, (as it was her name), began to work all kinds of jobs to support herself and her baby boy, and finally found a stable job as the administrator for the preacher Gideon's, growing church. Gideon offered his place to Svetlana for as long she needed it, just until she had enough to get an apartment, offered to pay for English classes and that's exactly what she did.
When Gideon was two years old, his mother bought a dainty apartment near the preacher's church, which was instantly convenient. His mother had also become a member of the church, interested in what it had to offer. If one preacher was able to save her from making a terrible mistake, then Jesus would be able to save her soul. There, Gideon's life was looking bright---he was learning English as well as Russian, was surrounded by a loving church and mother and he was just about ready to start school. Nothing seemed to be wrong.
Somewhere along the way, Svetlana heard of a misfortunate, broken-down politician's early death, caused by a drug overdose. It had been maybe two or three years since that fateful walk-out, but Svetlana couldn't help but mourn for the man. He didn't deserve such a pitiful death.
Gideon proved to be a hooligan at school---pulling pranks with his friends, disrespecting the teacher, not doing his homework---all the usual troublemaker business. But it wasn't until 8th grade where he was first introduced to drugs and the art of tattooing. Influenced by his shady, unruly friends, Gideon had his first tattoo at the beginning of ninth grade, his first fully chugged bottle of alcohol and sniff of drugs. It just went all downhill from there.
As the years went by, Gideon showed more alarming behavior and it became harder to hide it from his mother. Sure, there was the drugs and the alcohol, but to Gideon, the most fascinating thing for him was the art of tattooing. Whatever money he had saved up from work, he'd go and get tattoos, maybe even get a tip or two on how to make them himself from the artist. For him, his addiction wasn't the alcohol or the drugs, it was the tattoos. And so, he amassed them on his body, design after design, each having their own meaning. His mother discovered his unexpected passion months after he started all the alcohol and drugs and tattoos while he was still in ninth grade. She tried everything to make him stop---church sessions with the pastor to try to talk him out of it, made him stop hanging with those disreputable friends of his, even therapy sessions. Though they never had any real effect, Gideon pretended for the sake of his mother and the good pastor. He quit the drugs but not the alcohol, and certainly not his passion for tattoos. Then, he stepped into tenth grade.
That year, a recession spread across the great metropolis of Moscow. Prices went up while quality lowered. Many were in debt and could scarcely pay what they owed. One of these unfortunate was Svetlana---for her, money was sparse and bills were overflowing. Little did she know Gideon was stealing money to pay for his tattoos and other junk, but that was to remain a secret until later. Gideon, who felt guilty and sorry for their financial situation, tried to find work to gain an income to help pay off the debt. Soon, he found himself at the front of the desk of his tattoo artist, asking for a job. The artist denied at first, but because of their friendship over the years Gideon had come in for tattoos, he reconsidered. He offered the youth a job alright, but it was the last thing Gideon could expect.
Assistance in drug dealing.
Of course, it wasn't Gideon's first time in doing something that involved breaking the law, but this, he thought, would surely break his mother's soul, if she ever found out. He hesitated, but when his artist told him the amount of money he'd be getting, Gideon knew he had to take it. It was only temporary---Gideon was only there for the money.
Weeks into the operation, and everything was going along nicely. His mother, though she questioned him about the generous amount of money that suddenly filled their bank account, never could guess he was in the business. Gideon was satisfied---they were paying off their debts, and maybe, just maybe, they could get a better house. And he was doing it all for his mother.
Months into the drug deal, and Gideon was hooked. Not only in the drugged way, but in the dealership way as well. He climbed higher up the ranks and earned more money, growing Gideon's greed. With every successful batch sent on its way, the tattoo artist rewarded him with another tattoo, which Gideon greatly appreciated. The richer he got, the less cautious he became.
A week after his sixteenth birthday, Gideon was charged with drug dealing felony and fined for it as well, sentenced to two years in a juvenile delinquent prison. Deeply troubled, his mother sought consolation from the preacher that had helped her countless times before. By now, the preacher had gone back to America two years earlier, and when his good friend called him up, he was more than happy to listen and to comfort her. After hearing the disheartening situation she and her son were in, he advised her to send Gideon somewhere else, somewhere where his reputation wouldn't bother him as much . Their first choice was America, where Gideon would stay with the preacher after he served his sentence.
Two years later, days after his eighteenth birthday, Gideon was set free and after a truly hellish scolding and a very tearful goodbye (both from his mother), Gideon was sent off to America, to live with the preacher.
He is new to the school, having been there for only a few days.

Of course, she rebelled, she tried to run away from home, she was too close to getting into bad company. The solution their parents came up with for such problems? Changing cities. They would have to do it sooner or later, and it’s good for the girl — what can go wrong? The reason for those problems? Also changing cities. That her parents couldn’t see anymore.
After some time, she stopped trying. She stopped rebelling, she retreated into herself. Nora doesn’t spend much time with people now, not because she doesn’t want to but because she doesn’t necessarily know how to. She'd rather just read a book or come up with a story of her own. When it comes to human interaction, though, she can't tame herself. Guided by often negative emotions, she can come across as quite aggressive.
