  • If I kept a lot of secrets to myself, does that make me a King of Shadows?

What if there lies a world in-between worlds?

    What would exist there?

Perhaps the truth, or many hidden secrets...

Here, we follow the story of a young boy who has fallen into a coma. But we are not following the real world around him, rather we are venturing into the realms of another universe. A thin world hidden from many, so masked that only three individuals may enter.

A cautious, reserved boy named Colvin.

A spunky, daring girl named Brinlee.

    and

A tough, loyal boy named Albus.

What ties these three together? Fate? Friendship? Love? Hate? Perhaps something greater than simple emotions?

Within this universe lies a galaxy of other worlds. Every single one separate, yet connected. All aware of one another, but never colliding. Four of these places shall be introduced.

One surrounded in the vastness of the woods with a little obscure cottage tucked away around a hidden bend.

    Who is that?

The next built in a bustling city with a grand church at its center.

    There's another one.

Another blanketed with the white natural beauty of ice.

    Where are they coming from?

Finally, the last features no more than a simple island life.

    They couldn't be...

Each of these worlds contains a brilliant light that has been touched by darkness. While it is natural to see light and dark together, the darkness within each has grown in power, weakening the life of the worlds and all those who live in it. Creatures of desperation have appeared from the darkness, born from the negativity within. Recently they have brought havoc, taking the light away from others and falling into a sickening madness. What will this mean for our protagonists? Can they help these worlds? And who is the master behind all this?

Albus leaned over the bed and studied his best friend’s face. Why wouldn’t Colvin wake up? It happened so suddenly. One day, he had his best friend and the next day he didn't. He had no idea he would soon join him in a coma of his own.

The sound of voices carried from the end of the hallway. Colvin’s family kept kicking him out of the hospital. Oh, geez. He opened the door and tried to pick up on the tone and timbre of the speakers. The word ‘brain scan’ caught his attention. It sounded like nurses. Albus flopped against the door and let out a thin sigh. Safe for now.

He returned to Colvin’s bed side. Albus pulled out a tiny action figure of a brawny warrior and put it under his pillow so Colvin’s family wouldn’t find it. Maybe the warrior could pass on some of his strength to Colvin.

Colvin needed to come back for himself but also for Albus. Albus didn’t know how to be alone. He didn’t like it. All of his hobbies, hunting for bugs or playing make-believe, weren't fun without someone else. First, Brinlee and now Colvin. He lost both of his friends.

You can help him. A voice spoke directly into Albus’s mind. He darted around to search for the person it belonged to but found no one. The door was closed. He glanced at Colvin but he was still asleep.

Albus forced himself to stop looking and answer in case the voice decided to leave him. “I want that,” he said.

Maybe he doesn't want your help?

Albus splayed his fingers against his chest. “You’re lying,” he said. “Why wouldn’t he?” A heavy feeling sank in his stomach but he pushed it away. Albus peered down at Colvin. He remembered the day he fell asleep and didn’t wake up. Maybe it was his fault for raising his voice and losing his temper.

Would you put yourself at risk to the Darkness? To a Sleep that might never end?

Albus nodded. “I would," he said.

A warm haze filled Albus’s mind and seeped into the rest of his body. It was like eating a full meal and wanting to sleep afterward. He perched onto a nearby chair and propped his hand under his jaw. Albus's eyelids fell down heavily and his breathing slowed.

A short time later, Albus turned in his sleep. A ray of sunshine stroked his face and he frowned. Albus rose up slowly and shook his head to rid himself of his daze. The sweet scent of honeysuckles floated by on the breeze along with other strong floral smells he didn’t recognize. The hospital had disappeared. Where was he? What did that mean?

Albus glanced down at his strange new clothes. A loose crimson and white shirt with a belt draped around his waist. There was a glowing blue vial in the pouch at his side. He brushed over the large zipper on the front of his shirt and the dozens of pockets in his baggy green trousers. Whoa. He didn’t know where the outfit came from, but he liked it.

He kept catching himself staring at his arms and legs. Something was off. His limbs had grown bigger and, when he walked, he took longer strides. Albus looked like the hero he pretended to be in make believe games but without the magic or the weapons.

Albus glanced at the tall dark trees and concluded that he was in a forest somewhere. He planted his foot on one of the large mossy stones. The trees grew thicker here than in the woods back home.

Where was Colvin?

Albus decided to follow the trail leading north. Maybe he could find someone who knew something. Little did he know he would soon find many someones, most of them agitated dwarfs.
