THE YEAR IS 2378 A.D. A world past the war on peace, past the trials of disease and the tribulations of poverty. An entire world united. Imperial City ( once known as Chicago ) is glimmering with neon light and a repaired atmosphere but in the dark hides the grit leftover from humanity. The dirt that stains cruel disinfected fingers. A certain drive that manifests in all organic life. THE WILL TO LIVE. And humanity harbored this need, nursed it, and gave it life. And they called it immortality. Like a child waiting to be born, it was held in the bellies of scientists ready to erupt. To lead the way down the path to eternal life.

''sᴜғғᴏᴄᴀᴛɪɴɢ ɪɴ ᴛʜɪᴄᴋ ᴡᴀᴠᴇs ᴏғ sᴍᴏɢ.''

IT WAS CALLED ‘OPERATION: GHOST HARDWARE’. And it was the brain child of two geneticists, Dr. Andrew Peckam and Dr. Lisa Duncan. Each desperate to survive using the power of genetics and the technology of the day. Theorizing that immortality could be reached digitally. A machine copying the DNA of a human and recreating it using inorganic materials. And when they perfected the reconstruction of a body, it was time to transfer the consciousness of a human. Essentially, a soul living within machinery. But the Global United Nations refused to allow human testing, thinking it immoral to allow such a process to be done on a real human. And the project was thought to be put to rest.

''ᴛʜᴇ ɢʜᴏsᴛs ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ʜᴀʀᴅᴡᴀʀᴇ.''

BUT IT WASN’T. In secret, the geneticists gathered potential patients. All young and able to survive the process of their consciousness being ripped from an organic body and hard-wired to an inorganic one. Young adults on the brink of death, waiting to die. Criminals who yearn for freedom and the only way is to die and be reborn again. And it was this rebirth that they were called GHOSTS. And to test the functionality, each Ghost was paired with a human. A human that did not know they had been partnered with a robot. Under the guise that such arranged partnerships were to control and regulate societal structures. To keep the population from segregating itself. When in reality, it was to test the success of Operation: Ghost Hardware. These Ghosts now must survive with the struggle of a new body and with out the comforts of humanity. They are machines with souls. Ghosts in the hardware.

THE HARDWARE

HUMANS.

THIS SELECT GROUP OF Imperial City citizens were chosen out of hundreds who applied for a ‘Reintegration’ program. A program that would allow for the very divided world of Imperial City to come together in its youth. Where all of its chosen members are to leave their homes and move into a huge complex to share an apartment with their new partner. None of them knowing that this program is a huge disguise for its true purpose. All between the ages of eighteen and twenty-seven, they are a diverse group of young citizens with attributes suited for the secretive Operation: Ghost Hardware.

GHOSTS.

FORCED INTO A NEW and complex robotic body, Ghosts are named for the consciousness inside of a cybernetic host. Minds haunting the hardware. Their bodies were created of their own DNA, except they were given metallic parts. Synthetic skin weaving, artificial organs, metal tendons and muscle. It feels real from the outside but if they were to cut their skin, all a human would see is the inner workings. And they are surprisingly warm, a result of the constant mechanics working inside. They were told not to reveal their true identity, instead acting as if they were still completely human. Most are concerned of their human partner, afraid of slipping up and revealing their true nature. Some do not care but all have a hard time adjusting to their new body.
