ELECTRIC SHEEP

Glossary

Agency, The: The old police force of the Empire. Dismantled by Emperor Jamie au Olver for corruption.
Angels, The: One of the divisions of the Secret Police. These are the 'ground troops' who go in and abduct problem cases, trouble makers, and who are constantly armed. May be undercover, but also have uniform. Contains the faction of the Android Hunters, aka those in charge of hunting down androids.
Barcode: Since AI Technology was removed, these are no longer relevant. Older citizens may have barcodes stamped on their wrists from when the Empire was still able to enforce mandatory scans.
Eyes, The: One of the divisions of the Secret Police. The Eyes are the spies of the Secret Police. They work both undercover, via intelligence networks, and via now manually controlled monitoring systems. All Eyes operate when not undercover in 'Scramblers' - suits that mask clothing, face, and voice. The identity of all Eyes is unknown to all save the top tier of the Secret Police.
JoyBars: 'Retro' style establishments that sell alcohol, play music, and from where Joybots and human sex workers are readily available. Legal.
JoyBots: Colloquialism for androids or robots employed in the sex industry. Since androids were outlawed, these can only be found in crime dens.
MagiGrafts (MGs): Tech implants typically fixed onto the forearms of Magic users. These are used to channel and control Magic for those with the necessary genes. Users can control them mentally once they are adept with them, or use the projected holo-interface. May only be (legally) possessed by Noblus and Police Officers. Only visible external to the skin when in use.
Noblus: The term to refer to the nobility of the Empire. Typically identifiable by the 'au' between their first and last name, which is a privilege afforded only to their class.
StimHaunts: Modern day drug dens. Technically illegal, but as almost all are Noblus owned, prosecution only ever occurs for patrons when the Noblus has ulterior motives for capturing them.
Secret Police, The: The present law enforcement of the Empire, answering only to Jamie au Olver. This consists of two sub-sections: The Angels, and The Eyes. They are the only non-Noblus individuals permitted to use Magic and MagiGrafts. Key residences include the Peace Tower on Level One near The Palace, and the Rec Centres / Training Facilities on the Market Levels. They also have branches on all Central Planets and Stations.
TechGardens: Establishments that have one or more 'central port's which each connect to between 12-18 headsets. People can pay for sessions on these headsets, and are intravenously fed an amniotic fluid called LCL. Combined, these allow people to explore preprogrammed virtual environments and feel them as if they were real. Time runs 24 times faster in these environments, thus 1 hour in reality = 1 day in the virtual environment. Psychological addiction is common. Legal

Society
Modern human society is a dictatorship, not a democracy. Ruled by the Emperor, all laws are made by them (though they must be voted in by the majority of the Counsel), and The Secret Police answers to The Emperor alone. All of these groups are based on the Citadel, though branches exist throughout the Central Planets and Stations.

The one to inherit the throne is whoever the Emperor ‘names’ - they do this not verbally, but through a high-security data system that stories the named heir, and can only be altered by the Emperor (at least, theoretically). To access this system, the Emperor’s eye scan, voice recognition, and brain wave pattern must be at hand.

However, military coups and takeovers have happened in the past, especially when the Noblus views the Emperor as weak, and the civilian population is in favor of the change.

Humanity can be sorted into four sects: The Counsel, Noblus, Hands, and Slavs. Androids were never perceived as being people, but since being outlawed, are now considered an active threat by the majority of the population following the terrorism associated with them.

Calender
‘Time’ is governed by light levels set within the Citadel - all time has been restructured into sets of 10. There are 10 daylight hours, and 10 night hours per day. During daylight hours, UV light corresponding to Earth’s old sunlight is projected throughout the Citadel.

Non-Citadel space-born constructs typically mirror this time system, but planets will generally use their own day-and-night systems. However, all official events, holidays, etc are scheduled with Citadel Standard Time (CST).

Citadel Standard Days of the Week (10)

Suns, Merc, Vens, Terras, Mars, Joves, Satus, Nepus, Uranus, Plutos, Lunos.

Notes: Lunos is considered the day of rest/when most businesses are closed. Every Joves, mandatory taxes are collected from Hands.

Citadel Standard Months (10)

Nyx, Kore, Hades, Athena, Hera, Zeus, Poseidon, Artemis, Hephaestus, Ares.

The Counsel
The Counsel is comprised of twelve seats. Each seat is occupied by the head of (or chosen alternate) the twelve most powerful Noblus Houses. The Counsel all possess residence within the Palace (of the Emperor) and are expected to be present at least one day a week (Suns) there, when all Counsel meetings are scheduled for taking votes.

Being on the Counsel is both a position of create honor and also one of power. In Counsel is, in theory, immune to the Secret Police, and can give its members orders. However, both of these aspects can be overridden by direct orders from the Emperor.

Noblus
The Nobility. This is a recognised station that can only be purchased with one billion credits, and requires an annual contribution of the same amount to the Emperor (a process known as The Reaping).

Only the Nobility can (legally) use Razors, and (legally) use Magic, with the sole exception of The Secret Police. Almost all major businesses are controlled by Noblus families, and they own the vast majority of Slavs. Outer Rim planets that are not governed by The Emperor can be bought, owned, and governed by Noblus families.

Noblus also have the privilege of being the only ones allowed admittance into certain areas of the Citadel, and of Empire Governed planets. These are ‘luxury’ areas such as PleasureGardens, Feast Halls, and HoloSpas.

Razors: High-energy ‘swords’, Razors look just like silver pocket knives until activated. Here, they project up to a metre of light, high-frequency enough to slice through flesh as smooth as a hot knife through butter, and to do serious damage to unshielded battle armour. They can be rigid and straight, or through shifting a slider, can being flexible and function as whips. (think light-sabers, but with whip functions).

Extremely dangerous. Anyone non-Noblus caught carrying one faces execution.

Hands and Slavs
Hands
The unowned labor force of humanity, Hands rival Slavs in numbers. They can be anything, from traders, craftsmen, technicians, mechanics, scholars, and so on. Most of the Secret Police fall into the Hands category. Permitted to own property and use public sectors and institutions (e.g. Joybars, StimHaunts, and TechGardens).

Slavs

Or Slaves. Slavs can be owned by the Noblus or wealthy Hands, and have no rights or will of their own. They are forbidden to use recreational facilities, and may only enter public sectors (e.g. markets) as per their master’s request. Anyone may treat their Slavs as they wish, including murdering them; however, to do so without the Slav Owner's permission is considered vandalism. Those Hands who fall into debt often have to sell their citizenship in order to avoid execution. Criminals may also choose to become Slavs to avoid execution.

Magic
[Officially named BioENchancements, or BENs. Colloquially called Magic.]

‘Magic’ was developed in 2178 using a combination of electronic technology and genetic modifications. Only those with MagiGrafts (MGs) can fully utilise magic, though without some dormant signs may show, though these are rarely able to be useful without an MG. MagiGrafts can only legally be sold to the Noblus, though plenty of black market options are available if you know where to look.

MG Appearance:

omni-tool-inline.jpg

There exist three categories of magical skill: Shockers, Techs, and Warpers. Whilst only Noblus are permitted to utilise magic, due to the widespread experiments and testing that occured during Magic’s development, roughly 10-20% of the human population possesses Magic genes. It is not unheard of for non-Noblus discovered to harbour Magical ability to be arrested and executed upon discovery by The Secret Police.

Shockers
Offensive magic. Able to generate electric currents in their bodies. For some Shockers, this is localised to only one location - e.g.. their hands, their foot, face - or it may be a full-body ability. For some, it only manifests as a kind of shield, i.e. if they are touched, the toucher will be electrocuted - in this scenario, the power of the shock is the most powerful. These people are also known as ‘Shields’.

‘Projectors’ are those capable of using MGs to fire currents externally. Power varies between individuals and the quality of the MGs. Some of the more powerful Projectors can knock an enemy 10 feet away unconscious. It is very, very rare that anyone could be capable of killing someone with this ability, and even then, only at close range. Most can seriously cripple, paralyse, or induce muscular spasms to those in sight. If you get shocked, it often leaves scars similar to those left by lightning strikes.

Techs
Techs tend to be seen as ‘the crazies’. They are also the most potent without MGs. Techs are able to communicate mentally with electronic technology, giving them a kind of sixth sense that means they can receive information from camera feeds, browsers, sensors, and so forth. However, as a result of this constant sensory input (tuning out of this digital stream is extraordinarily difficult, and has only ever been semi-successful) Techs suffer serious psychosis and struggle to separate the digital reality from their own. They find focusing difficult, and come off as distractible when spoken with - they often talk of their visions under the assumptions others can see them too. There is a high comorbidity between Tech magic and mental illness.

MGs serve to help lessen this affect somewhat, as well as enhancing their tech interaction abilities. With MGs, it is possible to mentally hack protected tech much faster than manual bypassing would be, to disable and power down tech, and for the most powerful, even disable others’ shields. If one is going to attempt to ‘turn down’ the effects of the digital stream, an MG would be required.

Warpers
Warpers are typically the most feared of the Magic users; They are those able to bend space and time to their will. It is this flashy headline that generates so much fear around them, but in reality, they’re the most limited user as well. Without an MG, Warpers can, at most, perform minimal telekensis (i.e. moving a glass of water a few inches) and teleportation (a metre at most, and only themselves).

With an MG, Warpers live up to their legacy. The most powerful can levitate, shift, and throw heavy objects (e.g. crates, small vehicles), teleport themselves around a kilometer, and a small group of people several metres. A tiny, tiny fraction, 0.5.% of Warpers at most, can actually slow time around them.

However, here are serious consequences to the use of Warper abilities. Warping causes serious stress on brain tissue and often leads to internal bleeding, tumours, or cell death. Those who utilise time warp effects typically die of brain damage before the age of thirty, and others suffer memory loss, dissociation, and frequent nose bleeds. Few practicing Warpers live beyond the age of 50.

Notes
If you are going to play a magic user, please ensure they are not overpowered. Noblus characters will have an advantage, but if you’re outside of that social class, Magic is going to cause you more problems than it will give you solutions.

Counterfeit MGs often cause serious health complications, especially for Warpers (use an MG that’s not calibrated properly as a Warper, and your head will likely explode. Literally.). This includes cancer formations, nerve damage, and most bad MG users are unable to use at least one of their limbs, or have sensory deprivation in some form (most commonly sight and smell).

MGs are not visible when not in use. However, get spotted by The Secret Police whilst using one, or magic in general, you’re in serious trouble. If you’re going to play a non-Noblus who uses Magic, just make sure to bear these points in mind.

Androids cannot use magic.

Androids

Also known as 'tin cans' or 'andys'

Ratings:
Physical Level: F-A (C = human average)
Mental Level:F-A (C=human average)

Invented in 2056, an Android is an AI implanted into a human appearing physicality. Older models (Cerebus 5 and below) are easy to differentiate from humans, often with visible wiring, incomplete or unrealistic skin grafts, and overly large proportions. More recent models have achieved perfect replication of human appearance (i.e. during test studies, testers were unable to differentiate subjects as Android from human controls).

An android can be identified by the blue nervoid fluid they have instead of blood. Their main vulnerability is to electric shocks, which, if bypassing their shields, can cause full body malfunction or even wipe their memory cores.

Some androids are beyond super-humanely intelligent; those that were designed to run space-stations or even more complex structures, of classification Intelligence SA, were on occasion smuggled into 'bodies' to escape the Android Purge.

Androids are no longer bound by any 'laws of robots', and can harm humans as easily as humans could. However, since a decade prior, they have become illegal. A virus known as the Purge was invented and spread via the wireless network on the citadel, wiping out 60-80% of the android population at random. Most android remain infected with it; it causes random malfunctions, paranoia, memory shortages, and other mental and physical 'glitches'.

The last model of android to be manufactured was the Cerebus 9— the older the model, the lower the number. Older models are progressively less advanced in one or more departments.

Combat Models
On Average: Physical (B-A), Mental (F-A)

Combat models were the modern day soldiers, though they were always governed over by human Captains. They often have lowered empathy and compassion functions.

Pleasure Models | 'Joybots'
On Average: Physical (B-A), Mental (D-A)

Most Noblus families of the past possessed half a dozen personal Joybots. Joybots groomed, bathed, and entertained their masters with conversation and physical contact. Far more directable and reliable than a human prostitute, Joybots are typically attractive, well-mannered, and pre-programmed with extensive literary, musical, and cultural knowledge.

Service Models | 'Wives'
On Average: Physical (D-A), Mental (D-B)

Service Models, or more mockingly, ‘Wives’, these were the most common among non-Noblus families. They helped with house chores, or work details. They were the most varied, and could be homely, or highly skilled with technical, dexterous tasks. Most Noblus families employed Wives as nannies for their children, and most wealthy children were raised by Wives.

Labour Models
On Average: Physical (B-A), Mental (F-C)
More enduring than human labour forces and requiring next to no ‘nutrition’ to maintain (Androids are solar powered and require only two hours of exposure to standard UV light each day, or manual plug-in top-ups), Androids were the most popular labor form for those who can afford it. There were once entire planets in the unterraformed Outer Rim systems populated solely by androids, harvesting gases, ores, metals, and so forth. Rumor has it, some noblus continue this tradition away from the prying eye of the Emperor in order to maintain cheap labor.

Level One

Also known as The Space Platform, Level One is the most luxurious, ripe with cutting edge technology, the space sky as your view, and the freshest, cleanest oxygen ventilation. There are no residences here save for the Emperor's Palace and The Peace Tower. Rife with PleasureGardens, HoloSpas, and high-end boutiques, L1 is a throw back to Earth in its prime, rich in greenery, with modernised Roman architecture, and real running water and artificial lakes.

Public Sector

The public sector contains the top-end markets, residences of Noblus families, and all legitimate businesses. It has a wide range of recreational facilities, especially TechGardens and JoyBars. The Secret Police has a heavy presence here, largely to protect the noblus, but increasingly more so to spy on those who possess the wealth and power to do harm against the Emperor. It is the safest and most civilised area. Slavs are not permitted entry without their masters' instruction, and must carry 'validation' tags from their master which may be asked for by the Secret Police if they are stopped.

Market Levels
Residence to all middle-to-lower profit businesses, Hands residences, and the centre of economic activity. Trade, craft, and factories are in abundance here. The Secret Police has regular patrols day and night, and there are frequent raids on houses and businesses for both android sympathizers, and also more recently, for any materials considered 'non-patriotic'. Punishment for these crimes has becoming increasingly harsh, including execution. Typically, Noblus members will not enter here, and will send Slavs on errands here rather than enter themselves. Here is where The Secret Police has their training facilities and rec centres. Almost all areas of the Market levels are 'bugged' with audio taps.

Industry Sector | 'Shadow Districts'
Known as the Shadow Districts, these deep levels have terrible ventilation, dodgy lighting, and although the Secret Police operates here, they do so in secret, working in the shadows, as even they are under threat by the hatred that is felt towards them here. The criminal centre of the Citadel, the Shadow District is more than tolerated by the Noblus - most of the counterfeit businesses here are in some capacity owned by them, though of course, you'll never find that on their offical books. Not only that, but the Noblus will often frequent here for their own purposes, as the most illicit joys and pleasures can be found here, along with outlawed technology.

Hands may reside here, along with 'unregistered citizens' if they wish to avoid detection. Almost all surviving androids take refuge here, as it is down here that humans like to take advantage of the fact that they have no rights, and thus can be put to work in any way they can. Rumor has it more and more sections of the shadow district are being bugged, in particular the walkways. If a Slav flees their enslavement, they will likely take up shelter here. It is a dangerous place to live, and crime among residents is almost completely ignored by The Secret Police unless it affects visiting Noblus patrons.

Core
Inaccessible to those without a Tech Pass (or the necessary hacking skills) The Core is the mechanical piping and engine systems of the Citadel, along with the databank stores of the major Station software. Heavy machinery, high voltages, and no daylight hour lighting, tread lightly if you enter.

The Wastes

Devastated in 2202 by the military coup that put au Augustus in power, the Wastes was once the slums of the Citadel. Now, under Jamie au Olver's rule, it has been completely sectioned off to all but authorized personnel. It is the operation grounds for Boy's Industries, the tech branch of the Emperor, and rumor has it a hot bed for monstrous experiments. This is also where the Secret Police takes those they bring for 'reeducation'. Only members of Boy's Industries, The Secret Police, and high-ranking members of the Fleet may enter, unless, of course, you find a way to break in... ID and uniform must be worn at all times.

Social

★ Due to mods, genetic modifications, and stim technology, all genders are considered physical and mental equals. On the Citadel, there is no detectable monocultural sexism.
★ On the Citadel, there is no racial discrimination against People of Colour - the 21st Century’s ethnic minorities in the western world now dominate the Citadel’s economic, political, and technological industries. There is still some prejudice/resentment between different groups that hold onto their heritage.

The dominating cultures of the Citadel are several cultures that emerged from Old Earth’s China, Japan, and North Africa, along with a resurface in a ‘restoration’ movement of Ancient Rome and Greece. 75% of OE’s North America population died out during the Dictatorship Wars (occuring 2035-2042, in which multiple superpowers rose up to seize total control of the planet, an act initiated by NA. This initial government was then overthrown by the superpowers that emerged upon Luna)

70~80% of the human population is now mixed-race.
★ All sexualities, gender identities, and religions are considered non-issues on the Citadel, and are accepted in full. However, several religious factions exist with their own policies and attitudes - the most dominant of which is Demiurge, a faction who worship technology.
★ Noblus are allowed to physically assault Hands and below as they see fit.
★ Currency is known merely as Credits. A rough conversion is $1 = 10 Credits. They are digital and there is no physical currency.

Weapons

★ WMD, including biowarfare and extreme chemical weapons, are strictly forbidden. All weapons are rated on a scale of 1-10 by the Blind Bureau. Anything deemed 5+ is regulated (military grade weaponry and over). Anything rated 7 is only permitted under extreme circumstances. Only the Emperor may own and gift level 8 weaponry. Level 9 is outlawed. Level 10 is considered capable of destroying planets and has been outlawed since 2170, and the attempted development of such a weapon is punishable by death, even for The Emperor.

★ Price tends to correspond with weaponry level.

★ Examples:

1: Metal knives
2: Electric blades, mechanical bow and arrows
3. Pistols, shotguns, and oral poisons.
4. Assault rifles, snipers, smoke bombs.
5. Grenades, any military standard examples of the above weaponry
6. Razors, rocket launchers, MagiGrafts
7. Chemical weapons, gene-hack technology, digital scramblers
8. Neural hacks, anything deemed capable of levelling a city, radiation weaponary
9. Anything capable of wiping out something say, the size of NA (there’s a reason most of the USA died out, and it was here that the weaponry levels were introduced)
10. Starkillers, Anti-matter technology

Mods
★ Biomods, or ‘Mods’ for short, are Biological Modifications, a kind of combination of tech and genetics (MGs are a sub-category of these). Their are hugely varied and range in extensiveness, limited only by technology and the imagination. Limb additions often cause physical complications elsewhere and severely decrease lifespan. It is also through Mods that the Noblus are able to live up to 150 with ease. Anything beyond small aesthetic mods are outlawed, though only loosely policed, i.e. those in the Shadow District tend to look pretty 'funky'.

Examples: Moving tattoos, multiple arms, wings, holoeyes, translation voice-box implants, increased numbers of digits, plastic surgery with tech enhancements.
★ Cyborgs are extremely common, especially among Outer Rim human labourers who are at serious risk of losing limbs. The capabilities of prothesetics correspond to the wealth used to purchased them. They can range from a simple metal peg-leg to an identical replacement. Cheaper and more functional than stem cell regrown replacements.
★ It is perfectly legal for Noblus to harvest organs from Slavs if you are their master. For non-Noblus, however, it is illegal to harvest or buy organs - that is where Boy’s Tech and Meat Shop comes in.

A lot of Lore for this RP is either inspired by, referencing, or lifted from other media. If you like the vibes of this roleplay and want to check them out, here is the credit roll for what I can remember consciously drawing on.

Title, Androids (and Model rankings): Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Phillip K Dick // Blade Runner dir. Ridley Scott
Galaxy Map, Citadel Concept, Juno Station, insp. for Magic System: Mass Effect Trilogy
Names, Concept Art, and Razors: Red Rising by Pierce Brown
The Blind Bureau 'vibes' - Dark City (1998)
The Scramble Suits - A Scanner Darkly by Phillip K Dick
The Angels and The Eyes - The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
My love of spaceWolf 359 [Podcast]
AI concepts - The Long Way to A Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

★ 'JoyBots' - From this one book I never learned the name of and only got to read 50 pages of in France, if you know what I stole it from, please tell me, I want to read it and everytime I go in a book shop I flip through every Sci-Fi book to see if I can find it and I never do, it's really quite tragic

Most Concept Art can be sourced and found on the Pinboard linked HERE

Massive thank you to spookie spookie and Cychotic Cychotic , whose stunning freebie code helped frame all of this.

In-Depth Lore (link)

Please, dear god please, do not feel obligated to read this. This is purely for reference for anyone having any questions about the nitty gritty of the world, from how the internet works, to minor factions, to other, more obscure facts. If you have a question about world lore, checking here might help you find an answer faster. I shall try to organise in the most easy to navigate way possible, but things may be changed around a bit as I learn and go.
