The Hall of Feasts
To the left of the ballroom, through a set of large double doors and across a hall is a splendid dining room with a long central table lined with red-velvet-cushioned chairs. At the head of the table stands a massive evergreen decorated much like those in the ballroom: silver and gold and crystal ornaments wink in the light of a brilliant hearth fire, tall as a man and set against the outer wall. The table itself is laden with every sort of food imaginable: Roasted meat fresh off the spit, surrounded by platters of cooked greens, potatoes in thick, creamy sauce, parsnips, beats and cabbage and honeyed carrots. Hearty soups of every kind sit in massive silver tureens, sweet and savory. There are mountains of fresh bread, each loaf steaming as it is broken. Then come the sweets: Candied nuts, hot rolls steeped in cinnamon and dripping with glaze. Layered cakes with thick white fondant, decorated in snowflakes and flecks of real gold. Buns and cookies covered in powdered sugar, pastries filled with almond, vanilla and chestnut cream. There are piles of chocolate and pillars of the most exotic fruits.
By the roaring hearth there are chairs and thick rugs for people to settle in close to the fire, tell stories or speak quietly.
