I think I can recall being told something about that with Yami’s character in the manga now that you mention it. I’m not sure where but I think I’ve run across that before might haven Kit-Kat/Foxxy Miles from this forum awhile back but can’t recall. Either way, yeah, they could have used more time.

A Kaiba fan hey? Cool. I wasn’t either/or with him personally more neutral with him myself. but had friends back in the day that were Kaiba fans and he did have a lot of popularity.

Nice! That era did have some nice animations and stuff for their time.

Oh? That sucks. I’ve just been using the official YT channel for Yugioh to watch Original through to Arc-V era I did notice this morning though it doesn’t appear to have any episodes past Arc-V though. I’d guess Hulu probably will be even less useful for the older eras. I think Sevens is the current one that shows there. (No idea what that would be like. Saw a brief few moments once of that show and it looks even less like Yugioh to me then I would have guessed. But…. I am a Oldhead pretty much in this series/TCG so, yeah…)

Yuma! That’s right! I can’t believe I forgot that name. Kit & Astral are perhaps the only two names that I recall from Zexal up til the reminder and answer to my blanking on the name for Yuma. Thanks! Vrains produced two out of your top three favorites hey? Nice

I’ve always pretty much been consistently more of a fan of supporting characters then Mains no matter the series except a few rare cases. But Gong, I’ve always liked the characters that come off as unique and can make me laugh or various types of characters such as that. Not always popular or stands out with others but appreciated/favored by me for whatever their respective reasons are. Gong though seems like a solid character while bringing some comic relief at the same time.

Personally too early to tell for me with Yuto. I’m not sure I ever had a favored form of summoning but fusion would fit as a oldhead of Yugioh and what I grew up with although…. I should have paid far more attention to Ritual summons I’m seeing those as more underrated and not utilized enough imo. Although ritual monsters have improved in quality and variety quite a bit since my days as a kid though GX still had some good ones.

But makes sense though between you and your brother.

Appreciated! I’ve taken a slight break from finishing 5D’s and just started Arch-V recently so haven’t gotten too far yet. Zexal I need to finish as well since I only got to episode 12 or 13 a few years back when I first began the Numbers/XZ era. While now I can’t even recall too many names much less what happens in it. Haha. So yeah plenty to catch up on but not too far into V to know for sure what to expect. But I am curious how I’ll end up feeling about all this dimension and different versions of characters based off summoning styles and etc. plus if I’ll have a favorite out of them or favorite characters overall as well.

Awesome! Tough break on the cards and deck. But cool connection with your brothers and the series. Never knew anyone in RL growing up that played MTG so had a distant curiosity but never played or ventured into the game myself. Though it kinda runs right up my alley it seems anyway.

Custom cards hey? That’s cool! Only ever took part in a couple Yugioh rps that were sadly short lived. Under the right circumstances and style in which it was done, it would be kinda cool to see what another one would be like. But yeah pretty cool on the custom cards work. Closest I came wasn’t cards but designing a whole game and Yugioh/Duel Masters inspired fiction/anime of my own some years back before hitting a big wall and smaller obstacles then lost my work and haven’t recalled enough to piece it all back together again and resume where I left off.
Kaiba wouldn't be a likable character for the sole fact he's a dick with money and treats his younger brother with neglective hostility. But the dude is so over the top he feels like he was supposed to be in Jojo yet took a wrong turn. He says some of the most arrogant shit and then gets his ass kicked by a squat pharaoh in a punk dress teens body.
He yells at Yami in the Orichalcos arc while slamming his fist like the guy cheated on him over him losing a duel for the first time.
He spends the entire dsod movie trying to get Atem back just to duel him.
Everything is blue eyes white dragon themed down to his god damn space shuttle.

I want to hate him but when he says shit like, "It's true, I went through a great deal of trouble recreating the Pharaoh's deck. Strategies, even his perfectly quaffed hair. In fact, that part is what took the longest."

What a good relationship with your brothers!
It had its up and downs. I think we overall get along, but there were also rough aspects to it that still make some distance between us.

I personally can't handle the game, it confuses me a bit. ^^' But I love the characters so much, I keep writing them! I just don't write duels. 8') What kind of rps do you like in yugioh? I prefer the angst variety but with a need for fluff! Isekais are my love and life!
They were not too elaborate and mostly centered around duels with custom cards, with the plot starting out with something very simple like a school setting or a characters just hanging out on a trip to somewhere, and elaborating on that through the characters themselves. For instance, my latest attempt was a fantasy school RP I tried with a friend, and I was playing a living puppet whose deck (custom cards) contained a theme of duality and a few cards that hinted at a backstory that would lead to her returning to her homeland and betraying my partner's character.

To me duels are kind of the point of writing in the yugioh fandom, though it should be noted I am an OC-only RPer when it comes to fandoms. So, to me, playing in a fandom is always about the setting, and in my view the iconic part of yugioh's setting is how every conflict is resolved through "a children's cardgame". I do imagine it might be easier to find appeal in it outside of the duels for one who like fandom RPing with cannon characters.

As a sidenote, I do love the isekai genre myself, and so many subgenres within it that I like to play with.

There are some.... let's just say questionable story and marketing decisions in MTG as of late, but overall at the core design its still my favorite card game, and the first one I got into. My uncle used to play in some championships and one day I found some of his cards in a closet and he just kinda let me keep them haha. I'm not sure how I went from thinking I was playing the game while just making up BS about what cards did based on the image (because I couldn't read them) to trying out other card games and getting into yugioh as a result. Not even sure if I got my first deck first or if I started watching the anime first.

Yeah that can really really suck, drying up your motivation and then even if you do start remaking it, you always feel like there's some part missing that you don't remember but was really awesome so you can't just let go of it.

Mf went to the afterlife, risked his own life in a prototype travel shuttle that hadn't been tested just to duel the Pharaoh. Atem was sitting on the throne like he was waiting for him.

"Pharaoh, are you sure this 'Kaiba' person will visit?"
"He'll be here."
"Not to be disrespectful, but your deceased, my Pharaoh."
"That won't stop him."

Kaiba pulls up and Atem stands like:
"What took you so long, Kaiba? I expected to see you the following day after I left."

The whole thing just gives me 'my ex has moved on but I haven't'.

Out of simple curiosity- What are some unique archtypes/theme decks have you guys run? And has anyone seen or run a Plant type deck? Coming across a old plant type support spell card and suddenly got the question. Atm since it even years trying to recall if any plant theme decks ever caught my eye and if I’d ever see about making one if such a archtype that caught my eye was out there.

Nice! Haha that’s cool with the uncle passing on his cards. Curious about the as of late news with the mtg now days but interesting game from afar through what little I’ve seen.

Yes, yes it does and very much so. Very well detailed and exactly put with how I’m feeling about it all and constant wonder if I’m missing something.

Little brother found some old cards in December and wanted to learn how to play so we split it even and had a few duels. Then I bought a crystal beast structure deck and him a dark world structure deck.

As far as casual play goes id say they are great decks. I prefer the older rules before the multiple ways to summon shit as I seen the meta nowadays is to win on your first turn by cancelling out the opponent and I don't see that as very fun aha

Will say I have a amazoness/fish deck that i made from booster packs which is somewhat strong lol1674541823963617031993655034609.jpg
Using the duplicates of amazoness and fish cards aswell as some ninja spell/traps, a few key cards become bullshit like have "a legendary Ocean" and three "infernalqueen salmon"

With "han shi kyudo spirit" and "A-gold whip master" (as far as I can tell) I can pendulum summon any monsters in my hands whose levels are between 2 stars and 8 so that's a bullshit add on lol

Sadly I live in a remote area so no card game events happen around me and I've very few friends who duel. Usually done with family at Christmas/bdays etc

As an oldhead the new ways are quite something compared to the old ways. But interesting at times. Cool on the old card fins though and teaching the younger bro and new deck purchases.

Ah yes the old Amazoness archtype. Loved the deck back in the day and wanted to make one but fell short of a complete set and now it seems it has some add on cards to the archtype which is cool to see. Fish decks can be strong too and interesting as well.

Id like to go to a tournament but I'm equally afraid my crystal beast deck or anything i have, wouldn't stand a chance against competitive decks built around the meta. Mind you any of my knowledge of this sorta shit comes from the internet so it may not be as toxic as I assume...

but I assume those who frequent the events are 70-80% people who build decks around a certain strategy for link, xyz, pendulum, synchro, anything else and probably buy the cards they need singular so they can run a deck of 40 or 60 of the best effect cards 3 each they can afford/find to win by effects.

The crystal beasts blew me away as a kid watching the anime and as a older fan reading what they do in the real life game for the first time. But I know in comparison to the next ten years of cards made and rule additions/changes that have happened said crystal beast deck Is kinda dog shit lol

Really not worth the drive and prep to drive somewhere a tournament happens to pay for entry in a comp I might get stomped dead in the first round aha

I'm not sure how much I can really say I "ran" anything, because 1) I didn't play in any tournaments or such for yugioh, I stuck to casual play and 2) I mostly bought premade decks (which I often tore apart and made some mix with), as the pricing was just that much better than buying boosters (for a little over twice the price of a booster, a premade deck usually came with 5 times the cards, those cards were actually guaranteed to work together at least somewhat, and it often also had an extra booster pack.)

As for the decks I got/used, from the ones that were themed I recall...
  1. A zombie deck (Zombie World I believe, since it had Red Eyes Zombie Dragon)
  2. Machina Mayhem
  3. The latest one I got, Cyber Dragon Revolution

I think Cyber Dragons are probably among my favorite "themes" in yugioh, simply based on the feeling of how much I wanted that deck despite not having payed paper yugioh in years by that point.

Back in the day I also seem to recall I got Yugi's basic deck (with plain old classic Dark Magician at the front) and Marik's, and I also think at some point I bought something during the synchro era.

I never got into tournaments back in the day, mainly where I lived and still do plus, never really appealed to me with the Meta and few tournament duelists I met back then were kinda toxic and they were cheats so added to the no appeal to waste money and time for me. Also, the rules seemed to change a lot if I recall least back then on cards so tough to keep up to date without being in the tournament scene.

But yeah, now days the new summoning tactics and ways to do it…. It could be rather dull and tough to enjoy in some matches. Understandable.

Crystal beasts were interesting back then I agree. I never used them much myself but also never had the full set to max the potential a bit more. I had enough and the main feature of the deck or signature card of that era but not enough overall cards to have a full Jesse deck. But they were interesting and I think now days they are another GX era archtype that got more and newer era cards added to them along with Cyber, Ancient Gear (loved that theme back then too) I think Hero and some others.

Well, I’m just talking in general use not specifically for tournaments or casual, but rather any side or both.

But nice! Those sound familiar and some good ones. Cyber dragon was always a tough deck back in the day, in casual play with friends I’d have one pal use Crystal beast and the other used Cyber dragon while I tried different archtypes like Ancient gear and some others that peaked my interest like Amazoness (mixed since I didn’t have a ton/complete deck with that theme alone) and Gravekeeper, Dino’s and Roids too with some hero use back in the GX era. (Also had some Ojama fun cause I loved the entertainment that group brought back in the day.)

Oh yeah the classic era! Honestly that was my first deck starting out all those years back. But nice! A lot of awesome looking archtypes of interest since then that peak my interest these days since the Synchro era started and all those since that era passed.

In season Zero, Kaiba legit kicks Mokuba across the room. I could hardly believe my eyes. I know the Mokuba in that season was a bit,,, hardcore, but OKAY. Kicking him ACROSS THE ROOM? He's a tiny kid. Wow. 8')

Also I'm going to post this little thing here: I'm totally looking for Yugioh RPs! But I also wanted to note, I more often than not throw in characters from other fandoms. Usually AU versions but it depends on the setting. Multi-Fandom, I think the term is called? I prefer writing characterization and interaction rather than duels (which I can't write at all.) and I enjoy writing (m/m) romance!

If you sound interested in something like that, PM me!

...

But yes, Season Zero, anyone watch that? I thought it was quite good. I know I'm incredibly biased due to the fact it focuses less on duels and way more on Yami MIND CRUSHING everyone lol.

Season 0 is probably the closest well ever get to a proper manga adaptation. Not that DM didn't follow the main story line but because S0 followed more of the mini 'episodic' stories of the manga we got to see more character personalities. I also kinda enjoyed Miho despite her only appearing as a nameless crush in the first manga. They most likely made her a main character to pan out run time since most of the stories were very short reads, but I enjoyed her oblivious, girly-ness she was a great contrast to the cast.
I like how we got to see Yugi a lot more than Yami, it not only helps to get to know his character but also made Yami feel more mysterious and threatening compared to Yugi's rounder personality. Seeing him crushing over Anzu or getting into shenanigans with Jounouchi and Honda filled out his character a lot more.
The formula of the episodes was very monster of the week.
I enjoyed this a lot more then speed running the plot in DM because seeing what the gang was up to before the chaos started reminded me of early 2000's animes. Right down to the beach episode, which was technically a water park episode, but it had the same feeling of a beach episode. It gave Anzu a great character flaw, her constantly trying to lure out other Yugi with pretty questionable ways showed how selfish some of the main characters can be and in return makes them have something to overcome, unlike in DM where she stands to the side most times.
But nothing can really compare to just how dangerous Yami is in this vs the other anime, his temper is more shown here and his sadistic approach to heroism made him a much more complicated and interesting person.
In DM he'll beat you at a card game, in S0 I was straight up expectin' him to one day say, 'fuck it' and get into physical fights.
DM is Superman, S0 was Batman.

Also, Monster World arc. That shit was so hardcore, seeing Yami Bakura and Yami play a darker version of a tabletop game that reminded me of Dnd, the cast turned into little figurines with powers was so cool, dude. Bakura taking over and taking Yami Bakura by surprise was the best part.

Miho was...Interesting. She was definitely weaponizing her 'girl' charm on the cast, mainly the suckers who fell for it. I grew fond of her when I realized how much she cared for Anzu. It was as if she was still looking after Anzu despite her mischievous schemes. And I appreciated that in her character.

Anzu pretending to drown in order to get 'Yami' to show up was,,,,gah.

Yami was certainly a bit of a wild card. But I agree, nothing can compare. And I loved it, lol. At least he seemed fond of Yugi's his 'friends'?

Bakura was surprisingly less of a pushover than Yami Bakura thought! It sold me on his character.

Yeah it could have been a precursor. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Marik duel and his full deck or enough to recall more then I do right now. But GX era did provide a nice level of exposure and it appears more has been added since then going by what I see online. Which is nice imo.

I vaguely recall those I’ve blocked out the later episodes of GX. Wasn’t a fan of certain things and it just got a bit much. But I do recall some of the arcs and cards such as Evil hero and etc. certainly a interesting bunch though and twist on the hero archtype decks.

Hmm… Can’t say I’ve seen a Yugioh rp around in some time although, I haven’t been as active til recently for quite awhile either. But there is a appealing thought of getting back into rp after a long spell of no writing & rp and Yugioh would be interesting as I continue with the series watch & rewatch. Although Duels were often a point of contention with how they were done if I recall a past rp or two from years ago. So, personally would depend on how the rp is done but would be interesting. Moving past duels in some way but still having them around would be interesting too. But, yeah, a group Yugioh rp could be fun imo.

I've never actually seen a Yu-gi-oh! rp, but a group one would be pretty cool

Would be fun but I'm not sure how one would go about it and capture the fun of it aswell. Could ignore duels entirely and rp characters who resolve conflicts via duels decided beforehand or at the time if they win or lose.

Or rp and have duels between characters on discord or a site/game online.

Apart from that i wouldn't be able to think of a big plot for said group.
Original yugioh had evil artefacts/kaiba/someone really wanted to beat yugi.

Gx was about a duel school which went to another dimension where duel monsters are real maybe idk,

Next one had motorcycles, I know the first episode was set in some sort of prison where dueling is illegal but MC broke out of prison by beating the warden in a duel as they rode motorbikes...

Watched some of arc v an as far as I know its about a guy who plays a version of duel monsters that allows cheating, then he "discovers" a new way to summon/cheat... but meanwhile some bigwig corp/mi6 sort of deal has tech set up to notice and pinpoint where unique summons/cheating is happening in the city (globe?)

To be honest whoever can make a compelling narrative for a group rp that on its barest level would be people buying cards to build decks/duel and the interactions they have with others who share the hobby.
That person would be damn creative im sure lol

Well, in DM, there was this big theme of reincarnation that was also present in GX. So, what if instead of playing the actual characters, we play their reincarnations set in the far future.
Since the world always seems to want to end in every Yu-Gi-Oh! that I know of, what if the world did end and the characters are now in this warped apocalyptic landscape. Like they have to survive in this world where dueling actually is life threatening without Shadow games.

Duel wise- Easiest route might be avoiding Player vs Player as much as possible. Reference and simulate past duels when needed meaning allow characters to have them but skip past the writing out of full duels and just use detail references for different points if possible and needed. While key plot duels could be written out according to plot and etc. but overall that’s about all I got. Off-site gaming sites to do duels was a past issue old Yugioh rps I took part in had and wouldn’t be my first choice. But that’s just me and my preference on it. Maybe if needed there is a good option out there.

But keeping duels that are shown in rp mainly player vs cpu/NPC characters I’d imagine would work fairly well and avoid the main contention points while allowing more focus on the plot and various story lines and character building/interacting then having duels take up most of the time and potentially draw up various issues.

I’ve gotten various ideas since watching and rewatching but nothing too expanded, just small ideas here and there to piece with a larger plot and goal/etc. Also a bit rusty so not really feeling like attempting a Dm/Gm role tbh. A bit lazy and non-helpful I know haha.

OC’s always have been a personal preference. So something akin to reincarnation versions could be interesting. Though curious which era of characters we’re talking in such a scenario.

We can do a multitude of eras; it gives way for interesting character interactions we wouldn't normally see in the actually shows. It could also make it accessible for anyone to join who enjoys any of the Yu-gi-ohs!
We could even play one from each show to have a full cast of different Yu-Gi-Oh eras.
