well, ladies and gents, the question is there

do you remember your first character, and do you still use that very character to this day

ive posted in a thread or two (i cant remember) about the one character i use the most, and that he's been used since his creation which dates allllll the way back to 2014.

and i'm curious, do you remember/use them a lot?

let the games begin

I typically don't reuse characters. Once I create them that's it. They're only ever used in the one RP. If I liked them enough then I may create similar characters in the future, but they're never completely identical.

I remember my first few characters! I actually remember their appearance and backstory, vaguely remember the rp plot, but can't remember names of some of them lol
Anyway, I never reuse characters so they're nothing but a memory.

Sometimes I'm thinking to reboot one of my first roleplays just for fun. On the other hand, maybe it's best not touch it because I have fond memories of it, as probably everyone's first rp it was rather wild lol and rebooting it will likely change my perception of it.

i know how you feel

"LEAVE THE MEMORIES ALONE--"

on the other hand, even though i've used the same character for years, its fun re-inventing him every time i jump into another rp, and nowadays i see him stuck with me for the rest of my life

not that it's a bad thing i love playing as him

Yep I remember her and her broad outlines. She was a poorly constructed nightmare tbh but I think there are some good roots that might be salvaged from her if I ever go back to the vampire genre of roleplays.

My cultural stereotypes on the other hand will remain dead and buried.

My first character -- two characters, actually -- started out as a unique idea that turned out rather likable but terrible in terms of mechanics. In the end, however, I wrote a 10+-chapter story for them and developed them into what I feel are unique protagonists in a classic setting but a very small focus. I may not have used them in a roleplay since, but they are adored by me in a different medium.

I'm like Jannah there in that I don't usually re-use characters. There are exceptions of course, especially in fandom RPs where I have a bigger tendency to re-use an OC I didn't get a lot of opportunity to use or which I liked enough that, if I'm going to use it in the same type of RP / RP setting anyway, might as well keep.

My first character was in a digimon roleplaying forum, and I played a digimon myself. They were this vagabond type, eating garbage as a delicacy and being very protective of their little piece of river they “claimed”.

I no longer play them, but it was a very fun experience and surprisingly good character design back then. Didn’t expect to be so proud of my first character… though plenty of embarrassing disasters did follow haha.

My first character was a Sonic OC (Please don't judge me I was a kid 😆) and I haven't RP'd Sonic in year's so no. Would I use that character today if I did? Well it wasn't actually a bad character, so maybe.

my first proper oc was this beautiful prince oml he was the sweetest boy. my writing partner and i, admittedly, didn't discuss the setting well enough because she thought we were doing a realistic historical royalty au while i thought we were just having fun. so yeah, i was really self-indulgent and wrote a gorgeous feminine prince who pretty much fell in love with my partner's oc on first sight

and then y'know i found out ic that our world apparently didn't take well to homosexuality ? i was really confused there because i just wanted a cute love story </3

i'd totally be down to reuse him after altering a few things in his persona + history

I don't remember my first character, I imagine they were nothing short of cringe lol. Unless it's a character I have worked on extensively, I have characters I worked on for years, I rarely use the same characters for roleplays.

Ohh, yep! Macon. The rp lasted for two years, and he's one of my absolute favorite characters to this day.
I haven't used him in years, but I'm currently starting a 1x1 in which he's making his comeback. I had to tidy up his history quite a lot, as the rp I originally created him for, years ago, got really chaotic and unrealistic at some point, but now that he's updated and ready to go I'm so excited to bring him back 😄

my first character was on a Percy Jackson role play server and no I never used her again. The thing that sucked is that I got banned from Discord because I was like 15 then so you could imagine what I did, anyway I could not get back in the server for a damn year which was soul crushing because my OC Lucy Lawless daughter of Nemesis, yeah not very creative on the last name lol, was in a relationship with one of the mod's characters and it was great.

The first character I created was for a Naruto forum back in 2004 or 5, he was a Hyuuga. I don’t know what happened to the site, but there was a mass exodus, and a lot of people left in like 2007, so I used him for a couple of years, but I haven’t really done any online rp’s for a handful of years.

Oh my gosh, I do remember my first character! Her original name was Ghost, but I’ve changed her in quite a few ways. I’ve updated her backstory many times, and now have a fully fleshed out character, a storyline that would probably destroy DC (the comics), and plenty of drama.

I haven’t had the opportunity to rp as her recently, but I write stories about her all the time!

First RP character was a self-insert Pokemon Trainer OC. Like a couple years ago, I re-imagined them from a Dark-type specialist/gym leader into an aspiring rehabilitor of Pokemon with problem personalities who drags a Magikarp around on a leash. The original character was very generic badass. The newer version of them is still a kid, still learning the limitations of their patience, and has a bad habit of wanting to "fix" people.

I would RP as Jade again. They're cool. Pokemon RPs are pretty one-note usually, though.

My first ever character for writing purposes was a carbon copy of Eragon with a different hair color, named Jathan, and almost the same exact plot, when I was 10. Since them, Jathan has gone through a few (Quantity: Yes) changes, until eventually I retired him because it was getting out of control and I was running into that issue that I think a lot of us have with our first ever characters: he sucked. He was my first, and I'd like to believe only, Mary Sue character.

I don't use Jathan anymore. If I did, I'd have to start from the ground up again to make him not a disaster.

i dont think ive given a full explanation of the character ive been using for 7 years, so ill throw it in ere

it all started on a small lil flash website called habboon. heard of it? no?
it's like virtual chat room and you can create and customise your avatar, and customise your rooms, pretty cool stuff

it was somewhere in april 2014 (now that i think about it, my character, scott anderson, may have been created earlier than that but my memory do be lackin, so ill stick with 2014 to ease my mind) and i joined in on a zombie roleplay. i was thinking of a character to make up and so i went "y'know what? how bout i just make a character that kinda looks like me, slap on some glasses and call him canadian", then boom, the scott anderson character was created.

i stuck around in the roleplay for maybe a day or tops, and then the character met his end with a bullet to the head by another survivor. i cant remember the events leading up to it, but it was very out of nowhere, and my young mind was like "huh. that's neat." (and as an added bonus fact, the same day scott anderson died in that zombie roleplay, i created his younger sister, sarah, the same day, but that's a story for another time)

normally, when people end a roleplay or kill off a character, its normally the end of their use for that character. for me, it wasn't the end, and so for the next 7 years, i kept on using him in almost every roleplay i joined, whether it was more zombie roleplays, mythical/fantasy roleplays, high school/college roleplays, apocalypse roleplays, an area 51 roleplay... pretty much all the roleplay genres you could think of, reworking his backstory so it fits into each genre

i had no idea how much of a bond i had with him until probably about, last year/this year? and to be honest, i think i'll keep using him as long as i'm around. there were periods where i was sick of using the same character, but i decided to embrace it instead

he's the yang to my yin, the mjolnir to my thor, and to this day, my favourite character to use, of all time.

nowadays he's hangin' around in superhero roleplays, specifically marvel ones, in case you haven't noticed

for most people when they create their first character, they can be very mary sue-ish, and mine was kinda like that (except for the times he's died and whatnot), but, like i said, he's my favourite character to use of all time.

My first character. I remember her well. Amaya. A stunning vampire woman with long blonde hair, piercing blue eyes and a love for all mortal beings. She was truly lovely.
But alas, Amaya no longer is apart of my character repertoire. She has hung up her fangs and sauntered off into the night with her lover. Happily. I do hope.

this was a joy to read :)

Oh boy, I still remember my first character. She was the living embodiment of what a Mary Sue is. I made her when I was thirteen to fourteen; It was during the start of the Slender Man craze and I had just discovered Creepypastas. She was head over heels for Slender Man, was a ghost of a circus performer who died tragically and still haunted the last fairgrounds she was at before her death, and had a face claim of an anime girl from a series that to this day I've never watched nor know the name of. I had made friends on a different site who around my age at the time and were also huge Creepypasta fangirls that had their own characters who were in love with characters like Jeff The Killer, Laughing Jack, and Eyeless Jack. Honestly, it was a lot of fun. All of us would just enjoy the wacky stuff that would happen in the Slender Man Mansion and all of the drama between our characters.

Looking back on it those were honestly just really times and were certainly fun. It definitely made me fall in love with RPing and creating characters and stories for it.

Whew, this is a proper memory test. I can't exactly pinpoint who my first character ever's gotta be, but I do remember the first character I ever used for RPing online, specifically. Merry sailors, meet Amatariseu:
Check for awful centuries-old art
amatariseu_wip_2.png

I created this absolutely-not-incorrectly-spelled-variation-of-Amaterasu for a Dutch wolf RPing site where I started my whole career, and while she initially was your average white she-wolf that behaved exactly like you'd expect a melo-dramatic 11-year-old to, she got hit hard by my desire to go over the top later and grew into becoming a giant, tail-less, Scottish-accented supersoldier of a beast. Her tragic backstory and many betrayals and hardships (most of which actually did happen IC because the site was pretty much governed by much older people who liked messing with the young'uns) was key, and I think that at the end of the day, it did play an important part in developing my skills as an RPer. Even if she was a bit quaint, she still was an amazing stepping stone.

Nowadays I'm not too sure about what I should do with her. My writing ideas and worldbuilding has changed drastically, and there's no place for a talking OP dire wolf anymore. For the time being, I have a concept in mind to not let her legacy go to waste. Ama will probably be reincarnated as one of my anthro wolf species, as a veteran and circus director, where she plays a solid role in one of my newer character's detective cases. Seeing how bizarre she was for a wolf that was supposed to play in a semi-realistic non-magical universe, I think it's only appropriate, ay!

Mmm, I think the very first roleplay character I ever had was a Warhammer Quest character back when I was twelve. A dwarf with a rifle and a drinking problem. Ended up getting into a fight with a friend playing the Elf who thought it would be funny to hit my dwarf then try to outrun him, taunting me the entire time [Because he moved more spaces then me, he was a hybrid archer/mage, and, in his head, that meant I could never touch him and he could kite me]. He thought that right up until I shot him with my rifle and took half his life with the shot. My uncle, the GM, had to step in and bring order back around. IIRC, that particular game ended with my dwarf panicky dragging the elf's unconscious body through the dungeon screaming as a vampire lord chased us and my cousin, a fellow dwarf, tried to hold him off so we could escape.

If we are talking forums here, I was 13, I think? Was IMVU's like forums and I was roleplaying a BBEG, because I was an edgy little 13 year old, and was trying to start a world conflict in this fantasy world [That had Eragon Elves which are something I hate more then anything in Fantasy, to this day, I still hate those mary sue elves], and was very cringe. I mean, I am talking long winded, badly spelt monologues, teleportation, the works. I think the character was based on Warhammer Fantasy chaos warriors so was some Tzeentchian style sorcerer lord trying to start the war with deception to please his god 🤔? Keep in mind everyone else in that RP was just as awful as I was, so it was full of characters who just instantly knew everything was a trick because they're too smart and awesome to fall for anything. Good lord, was it awful. Think my second character, a paladin on the same rp, was such an improvement on every level.

And no, I don't still use them. XD

my first ever character is actually pretty embarrassing, they were an Undertale oc i made when i was i pretty young and new to rp.
since then, there’s a few very old oc’s that i still use, and they’ve gone through a lot of changes (if not complete changes). there’s a character i made in 2018 that i still use to this day. my oc’s tend to have small changes made to them to accommodate the rp i use them in, but he’s gone from a sorta self-insert to a well-rounded character. i just think it’s interesting to look back on where a character started.

ill be honest you guys, i didnt expect this post to blow up as much as it did, but it's awesome to see that a lot of you remember the ol' days when you create your first character, doesn't matter how much you hate it or how cringey you think it might be, it's amazing to look back on how far you've come.

there's an old saying:

you never forget your first. (or something like that)
