Soft wind gently whirred against the winding maze of doughy pink, and the leaves responded with murmured song. Innumerable quiet vibrations illuminated the forest clearing with a palliating calm. Sound much too soft to be heard; instead a deeper resonation that spoke to the innate. This place was yours, and yours alone. Not spoiled by bug nor beasts, nor tarnished by ill-tempered clouds. There was no blue above, just layers of blanketed pink upon pink weaved into the woody grotto where you laid.

At its heart, stood rosy sod. A bedded patch elevated by generous branch and thicket. No edges to be seen, only a wondrously rounded circle unlike anything else around. Atop it, seven divots. Each one gently clutching motionless orbs of balled fur—save for two. Most the size of an apple, another a melon. Their delicate placements uninterrupted from the numerous winding growths that surrounded the plateau but dared not intrude.

Not a moment had passed, neither pulse nor breath before the weight of the air grew dense. Though the inexplicable illumination did not waver the feeling of warmth soon waned to nothing, and fresh reverberations became known. The pittering of observers most curious, the excited chittering of those above & below, the rousing warbling of those out of sight, and plenty more. A myriad of unknowns collecting together, but failing to awaken the slumbering forms.

Prologue: [The Awakening]

Bundled as you were, it may have come as no surprise. The ample fleece your form boasted may as well have been delicate whiskers more conscious than your mind. An empty head that did not stir for anything short of danger. Reverberations that did not respect the sanctity of the soul. A feeling unlike any. A rumbling. A calling. A promise from deep below. It was as if the earth itself had whispered for you to wake. Time had not begun until this moment, and would not not last if you did not follow.

Rise and shine.

The empty dark of unconsciousness was not without its perks. It was a form of concentration. A sense of reflection not hindered by any corporal bindings. Answers to questions not asked could be received like melting snowflakes on warm skin. The unknown was not foe, but an offer. A sustained pulse of another not far off. Neither your fellow slumbering brethren nor the inevitable encroaching pittering of prying eyes. Sensitivity was a gift, and it was rewarding you with feeling. Feelings from something very close—very important.

Awake.

Encased in abnormal heat, and at the mercy of something not your own. The presence of the sap around your form was irregular, but your knowing of it even more so. This substance itself was life, and you owed it everything. Yet the importance of escaping it meant the difference between actualization and evanescence. Accept it. Reject it. Escape it. Embrace it. The exact semantics were irrelevant. Your gullet was impeded, and breath neglected.

Awake.

Taste was not something to comprehend so early, but the buzzing within your tongue was telling. Discomfort that spoke of molten steel—metal. Unnatural matter unfit for consumption, yet lingering amidst your puffing maw. A tenderness was visited upon each groove of the beak’s whole, but no mark would ever be found. Afterall, taste was finite, if even real to begin with. With no past, and nothing present, the conclusion would have to wait.

Awake.

Balled fur was the intent, but you seemed set on contesting that. Your precarious situation was not immediately evident during your snooze, but your sensations did not match the others. Heat was not so easily obtained, and an inconsistent chill was received instead. There was no soft grass, only wavering leaves at each side. Your back was insulted by coarse bark while the bulk of your form remained hoisted far above the ground. It was your tail, however, that would prove most troublesome. The end was stuck within one of the many dotted holes within the trees.

Awake.

To sleep before existence is to accept dreams as reality, and reality as dreams. Yet to grasp that, was to understand that truth required the knowledge of truth in order to exist. Your wait was not dark. On the contrary, you were experiencing light at full force. Stars—celestial bodies of simmering gas dotting the heavens with yearning. Existences that were not intended for you, yet stirred a longing much too intimate to release. There could be no greater fulfillment than what you were currently experiencing.

Surely it couldn’t hurt to let the
DREAM
go on…?

Summoning 101

Hurt.

A sensation foreign and unfamiliar and unpleasant.

The creature thrashed about trying to recoil from the molten feel at their mouth. When that failed they found the feel of a sharpness at the sensation. Ah, they had claws and said claws were pawing at their own mouth. Color flooded their senses as they opened their eyes and the orb took in the purple of their paws.

With another thrash they fell to the floor.

Pain.

Yet another sensation against their body. The creatures began circling around where they fell taking stock of how to move their limbs, stumbling as they perfected the movements. A whimper was released from their maw as they began to learn how to use the stinging mouth. Their beak sharp as they opened and closed it.

They were not alone.

There were other creatures. Them? Us? Similar? Different? Each creature was significantly smaller than they were. Incomplete? Or was it that they themselves were the other?

They lowered their body clutching the ground as they approached the other three in the clearing. Yet the sound of ruffling above drew their attention. There were ones above. More? Creature? Threat?

A rumble began sounding from their own mouth shocking them.

Within a moment they settled the sound down stopping it in its tracks.

They tapped their larger paws in the direction of the others.

“Wraaaawraa”

They flopped upon the closest one to themselves.

They were asleep. If they even knew what asleep was. All that was clear to them was the abundance of glittering light all around them. Light like no other, it burned and swirled in colors they had no understanding of. And yet, they felt at peace. Utterly enraptured by the scene swirling among them. Distantly, they thought they heard something... sound? They didn't know. It didn't matter, did it? Surely the stars they were baring witness to were more important than something they could barely make out... right?

Right... Perhaps, but they couldn't be certain. Couldn't be certain of... well, anything really. After all, they had no clue where they were or what it all was or meant. Just that it was all they could see for miles; floating in a sea of ink and beauty.

But past their sight, in a realm they were still wholly unaware of, their body curled up tighter. Their tail laid itself over their closed eyes, their form still fast asleep. With no urgency to wake, they continued to sleep; continued to be encased in the dream that held their attention so tightly, beyond the need to understand their situation or that there was something more real to find past it all.

And so Curious slept. Deep in a dream of the heavens they were so far from.

So much can happen in such a short time.

Or was it short?

No one can really tell the time when they are simply not.

But they are, now.

Not was a memory long forgotten.

Not forgotten?

Not was a memory that lasted forever. It left imprints on the are. It was nostalgia that intertwined with instinct. It could not slip from memory. Not for this being.

Just as the not left marks on the being, the are was currently leaving lasting impressions on all their senses.

It could smell the sweet air, and hear the soft resonating heartbeat of what could be a friend. It could even see the similar-looking creatures that had fallen around it— family, it knew.

More importantly, however, it could feel.

The same air that smelled so sweet gently pushed past it. The soft grass beneath it cushioned their paws, and the dirt beneath that felt even softer.

Even beyond that, it could feel. . . . . .

How could it tell?

It couldn’t, not yet.

To make up for it, they promised to themselves. Wordless in its entirety, and without a single thought to it.

To translate silence:

They will.

For now, their eyes trailed upwards. Obscuring the vibrant pink crown, a tree stood tall; another creature swung from it. Mimicking one of the sounds it heard from their larger kin only moments ago —however long a moment truly is— the being chittered to the one that had made itself a swing.

A gentle song for a peer.

How long does it take for a wibble to understand the concept of drowning? Not long after their own conception hopefully. A wibble should have every sense from the start to avoid such a precarious situation. So why hadn't this one tried to escape their fatal fate yet?

Though they easily could with the tug of their head, it seemed that they couldn't break free. Oblivious to their surroundings and their senses impaired, what they knew of the world surrounded them. It gave them so much warmth that they nearly forgot they had a form. It gave them so much security that they wouldn't answer the urge to move. But most importantly it gave them the illusion of stability. With the fork of their tail glued to the base of their head and everything in between, they were being held together by this substance and each movement no matter how subtle inched them one step closer to oblivion. Had they dared try to break the connection they would lose everything they had ever known. So they weren't content with leaving, at least not yet anyway. For now to be still was all they needed, and they didn't need anything else. Deep within the back of their mind however, was a force disrupting the warmth they've cultivated over time. A strange sensation ruffling said stability. It made their skin tense up, their tail curl further past their head.

Had it come a moment too late, they may have never seen what was beyond.

All of their senses sprung to life in an instant- eyes shot open as their beak coughed and sputtered, their antennas flapping about their stems, registering the cold air before their paws bounded away from the foreign feelings at their tips. Only a few hops passed before they began to calm down and take in the sights surrounding them. Pink became the first color they saw, soft became the first texture they felt. Their concepts may be something the wibble may never truly comprehend. There were others in the blanket that popped out from the cotton-eques scenery, other that moved and breathed just as they do. But they stay still, their innate curiosity pattering at their core yet melancholy peppered the sense of relief reverberating from their posture.

Their senses unlocked and at full force, they seemed to have almost forgotten their misplaced reliance. They only realized that it was still present when the wibble caught sight on their slick fur, drenched without ever touching water. Despite its warmth, an intuitive sensation chills their entire being. The stability they felt before sentience was now tainted. It wasn't natural. They rub against the fluffy cotton beneath them in an attempt to rid themselves of what had kept them alive and what nearly took them away from life.

Thrash!

They snapped their head to the sound, reflexively springing up and lashing their tail. Another one of the beings were present. Bigger than the others, bigger than them. And rapidly approaching. Relying entirely on their instincts the smaller wibble slowly backed away as they try to match their kin's height, arching their back to the point where their center paws rose from the ground, keeping their side facing the approacher. Surely a wise decision, it had already overtaken the wibble closest to it. But a blunder was not foreseen. They had their back turned to another, still curled up in blissful slumber, and they didn't turn back in time to change their course.

"Squwee-!"

One misstep lead to a tumble, and gravity made it too late to jump away.

What did this mean? The first sensation they could focus on was the softness beneath their paws as they kneaded the ground, surrendering back down as soon as they tried to stand tall. Their thick, fuzzy fleece splayed without any order as the wibble twisted and writhed to run their face across their fluffy tail. It was a comforting warmth, and little Fleecy remained curled into themselves for a short time. But that was when they were alone, and soon the others awoke.

Fleecy let out nothing more than a soft croon in greeting as its eyes rose to meet their company, body perking up before any comprehension could be had. They lifted a paw up to their face, their fur was heavy. Did everyone feel that? Fleecy trotted around, head darting side to side as they took in their surroundings until they-

Thump!

A new sensation, new warmth hit their body and their view fell back to the ground they had become well-acquainted with. Without any thought, they let out a squeal and began to squirm until they faced the source of the new feeling.

Friend?

Fleecy sounded a new chirp, this one friendlier than the one they let out before, and rolled away from the warm mass. After regaining their footing, they suddenly shook, and their unkempt fur shook with them, standing straight on their body. They were now notably puffier. They circled the strangely large friend, golden eyes taking in all their features, fluffy tail bouncing against them. The way they moved was cloud-like, their broad paws took each step gently, cushioned by their fur.

After circling Chomp, they peered around once more. There were more friends nearby. But there was so much more beyond that. Too much for them to take in all at once, but they did what they could and trotted forward.

Sap made a subtle whimper as the leaves shook with the surrounding breeze and the wibble attempted to sink further into itself. Their beak clicked feebly as a coarse texture dug into their back and another instinctive shiver coursed through their body. They let out a small squeak and waved their paws in the air hoping to escape whatever unpleasant sensations assaulted their body.

The attempt was feeble.

Realizing as much, Sap begrudgingly opened their wide eyes to peer into the world.

A quiet song wafted to their antenna, soothing, and their eyes peered down to where more of their kin were. Their eyes brightened in delight at the realization that they were not alone.

They twisted so that nimble paws touched the bark, and their back was quickly relieved of the harsh sensation. They attempted to walk down the thing-

Tug.

Their head snapped up to whatever was constricting their movement.

Something was eating them.

Sap let out a distressed squeak, their small and quick movements were frenzied and panicked as they kept trying to tug themselves down.

Insane President

The one they flopped on chirped. A new sensation rippled across their body. Fluff, soft, warm. Their new buddy was not only smaller but had soft upon their form.

This one was nice.

But they were other. And more others existed. Soft, this one was. Fleecy.

The stinging of his mouth was beginning to disappear as the time went on. He opened and closed his mouth as clang Cha sound came from his beak.

Chomp, he was Chomp.

There was one who sang. There was one who tumbled away from the two friends. And yet another letting out squeaks from above.

Fleecy circled him.

He let out a whining sound of approval before beginning to hop excitedly. He trailed behind his new friend for a moment before rushing forwards.

The squeaks were curious. He wanted to find the source. His little claws found something he attempted to climb up in hopes of reaching the sound.

You chose to accept the dream.

Your vision whisked away from the balls of flame towards the many mineral spheres. Suspended orbs of earth and gas illuminated by their system’s stars. Few were blessed with atmospheres and climates amicable to support life, but they struggled all the same. There was darkness at the horizon, but it was a horizon that spanned into infinity. It was something not meant for your intrusive thoughts, yet there would be no denying its pull.

The dream got dark, and darker yet. Until there was nothing left to see.

As blurred vision began to clear, a single curled up form became visible.

You.

Your awakening left you with only the sensation of being watched. With an understanding that these were no dreams, but the senses of something else out of reach.

Climbing was something that came innately, this you knew.

With mitts against the wood, the sizely wibble began their uneasy ascent. Claws which had been unknown of just moments prior introduced themselves to the soft bark of the obstacle in front. They dug enough to provide security while ensuring no real harm came to the trees’ delicate form. Damage to these growths was to be avoided at all costs—that was what every single hair on their body radiated.

The way up had started easy. The winding of the tree had favored room for each and every paw, but it was a relief that faded quickly. The further it went, the more it arched and soon enough Chomp would find themselves suspended nearly as equal to their sibling. Their only consolation was their fine grip that kept them from plummeting down to the soft soil.

Until the bark began to bend.

The thin outer layer of the tree’s skin peeled back, curling further and further down but never giving way at the seam. Instead a soft pinky sap leaked from the flora’s fresh wound, trickling and pooling down at its feet. As for the wibble: they remained hanging from the loose piece of bark.

Blink. Blink.

The wibble swiveled around in a circle inspecting itself.

Paw check. Paw check. Paw check. Paw check. Paw check. Paw check. Tail check. Tail ch—

Wait—

Two tails was wrong!

Something was wrong!

Their face scrunched up, a soft ‘mrrmrrmrr’ escaped their break, and they spun around once more. Their eyes twitched from thing to thing, absorbing as much of their surroundings as their little mind might. Only the things they saw did not match their natural expectations. At their core there was a wobbling sense of jitters. Eight! There were supposed to be eight, but they were just one. They were alone in a place they were not supposed to be. It was dangerous. It was wrong. It was wrong!

Orchid eyes peered skyward towards the elevated platform, and soon enough the gears in their head clicked.

Up! They had to go up! Return! Return!

They curled into a ball.

Actually...

They didn’t like heights.

Suffocation

The tree made Chomp's hair stand on end.

It was important. It must be protected. Thus it shall. He knew this, but there existed another of themselves. That other too was needed.

Yet as he made his ascent he found it less and less likely he would make it fully. His paws were clearly larger than intended at this level. Still, he found a purchase where he could mewl as he approached. It flew into a cry as the bark bent forwards and him with it. His claws lessened their grip, instinctively he knew what to do.

The stinging of his mouth left forth an urge.

With a shift of his weight used a counterforce by propelling his tail and hind legs out to have him soar through the air as he brought his beak open attempting to snach the trapped one out of their tree prison.

Everyone on the ground

The being watched on as the swinging friend chittered and squeaked for freedom.

Another ran up the tree in an attempt to save them, and though they peeled back the bark, they jumped to the rescue. Gravity was against them, but the one watching from the ground did not worry. The grass was a landing pad safe for the creatures that hung.

No, there was something else to be worried about. Something else that seemed to be off.

The being surveyed the others, matching up their senses to the members of their family present.

They could see five, not including itself. But there were more that were able to be felt.

It turned around to face the edge of the soft platform, slowly treading towards the feeling. Seeking for its origin.

It could hear the soft, familiar murmur of the creature below. It was alone. It reminded the being of something that it didn’t know it knew, if it even knew anything at all.

Something it was told only a short, very long time ago.

Don’t be alone.

It peeked over the edge of the plateau, eyes meeting the ball of fluff and marble resting below.

…Marble?

The marble that matched the eyes of the others. Chipped right in the middle.

The familiar shine on the side of the creature’s head sparked an instinctual feeling of fear. Something was deeply, deeply wrong with this one. Their eye shouldn’t take up so much of their head. It wasn’t supposed to be so visible. It definitely wasn’t supposed to be missing a piece. If the being hadn’t heard it murmur, it would’ve assumed they were dead.

A worried chatter escaped the being, calling out to the others that were awake and on the ground— or what it had assumed was the ground, now realizing there was more ground below it.

Help.

They- Squee scrambled from where they tumbled, readjusting their sights to the melon-sized terror. Or so they thought before. Now they were perplexed, confused by the clawed one's movements and how they interacted with their floofier counterpart. Were they actually family? Hmm.

From there, the bigger wibble seemed to sense another still on the branches, not coming down for whatever reason it might've been. They scaled the tree, slowly losing surface to grip on as they climbed higher. Squee unconsciously tensed up, a worry not for their kin, but for the tree, welling up inside them. Though there weren't many visible signs implying so, they shared the same instinctive knowledge as all the others that the tree was important and that the tree mustn't be harmed. So Squee’s little mind spiralled into havoc when they saw sap bleeding out from beneath peeling bark. Their eyes shrank from the sight. Distressed mews escaped their maw, sharp in pitch, meant as a warning to their kin high up.

Just then, other important matters caught their attention. Chatter from another, one that seemed more similar to them but with senses surpassing their own by the height of trees. The proof being their cry for what was out of sight and a gaze peering into the unknown. Squee turns back to the peeling bark, pink sap still leaking from its rupture. It left a unsettling feeling, though there wasn’t much of anything they could do about it. At least they had a chance to remedy the other's cries and what was ailing them. Silent and unnerved, the sap-lodged invertebrate crept over to investigate the scene. They chirped to the one who called, before cautiously peering over the edge of where the seeker stood.

Squeak!

Sap flailed his paws and quickly craned his neck to search below him. He was beyond relieved when he saw a bigger one climbing up the tree towards them. He tried to stretch himself as much as he could to perhaps reach the other, but the attempt was feeble, and Sap’s hind legs kicked the air behind him in contempt.

The monster above him... or rather-

Sap looked above searchingly; the thing still had not let go of him, but it didn’t make any more attempts to eat him. It was a nuisance, and yet it hadn’t explicitly done anything to harm him...

Sap’s small body was still tense, but his panic had subsided slightly, his tiny heart only made small pitters now instead of great big ones.

He desperately needed the other to hurry.

The fuzzy wibble nuzzled the ground as he moved forward toward nothing in particular, ready to embrace whatever came their way in their new world. Before they could stray too far from their pack, their few thoughts driving them to explore were interrupted by new worried squeaks, and their body tensed, fur standing on end.

Mrrraow?

They responded with concern and made their way toward the edge of the platform, where Seeker had called from. Peering over with immediate curiosity, the problem was evident. They squeaked down at the broken creature below them, approaching closer and closer to the edge until their two front paws were dangling over, the rest of their body quivering as they felt and looked around for a path down. They looked toward the other wibbles, at a loss of not only what to do with the one below, but of how to take in the discovery of land beyond the plateau.

Everyone!!!

Chip would have much rather remained curled up in their ball of fluff, but even their fractured mind space could understand that stagnation meant the end. An end to sight. An end to warmth. An end to purpose. Where they were now was a place out of bounds, and even if they were to return there was no real way to regain what had been lost. Even the soft movements of the leaves made their fur stand on end with their instincts telling them all they needed to know.

!!!

The clouds would have been the first to break—had they been in view. So instead, it was the canopy of pink above that split and splintered into a downpour of kindling and plant fiber. The fresh wound in the woodlands exterior gave way deeper and deeper until a bird of unparalleled proportion descended from the blistering red above.

While its claws perched against the bulk of the elevated plateau, the animal’s small rounded eyes swirled around its enormous head, failing to settle for a quarry. In place of coordination, its large wings began to slowly beat in pace with its avidity. Enough so that the many plants on the ground began to twist and snap before being sent flying. Likewise, the small purple Wibble just adjacent was in turn jettisoned deeper into the thicket of the woods.

There was something off.

The beast’s head was just level with the six wibbles above, yet its eyes failed to catch their presence. The warmth in the air seemed to heat up, until the spherical orb at the outcropping’s center began to pulsate. Whatever matter it consisted of began to transpose like a liquid, again and again, until the exhaustive pink of the surroundings began to flicker green.

In doing so, the gaze of the lurking creature began to hesitate, and its attention pulled inward.

It would be Seeker, in all their sensitivity, who would be able to glean an abnormal veil. An unseeable field of shelter that was beginning to falter.

Omori 8-Bit

A sensation familiar once more.

Perhaps this one needed a name. Air whooshed past them and that same uncomfortable sting felt out against their back as the wibble in their beak fell to the ground with them. Pain hit again as the small one fell upon him.

He let out a squeak as they hit the floor releasing the friend in their grasp. The others were making various noises as well. He brought himself back up on his paws as he focused on the warmth of the clearing.

Still, that warmth was not comforting when the canopy split open.

Something fell upon them.

He opened his mouth to bite at it. It gave under his beak providing a stinging sensation once more.

He looked up to see it and the creature came closer into view.

Giant, terrifying, and coming closer.

He let out a screech before starting to use his body to push the others backward.

Squee would frantically pace around the edge as they chirp down towards the little disfigured gremlin, gravely unsettled by its state and concerned for its wellbeing.

But that was all before the sky split. Before the massive behemoth of a shadow graced its presence into their humble enclosure.

Before they even realized what it belonged to Squee fled from their spot on the cliff. They try to make a dash to the stalks hoping that they would keep them hidden from view, however, the sap quickly puts their endeavors to shame. They planted facefirst onto the ground and got obliterated by Chomp's sheer force, shoving her further away from the chipped gremlin just as the chipped gremlin was pushed from their view. Though knowing that they were in grave danger, they had no clue as to how much was at stake.

Sap’s tiny body jerked out of the monster’s grasp, and he squeaked in surprise at the force. The bigger one had jumped in a moment of distraction at Sap’s expense and now his tiny heart raced as the wind whipped his skin. He squealed in terror as the ground drew nearer, digging his tiny paws through the bigger one’s hold, desperate to escape his fate.

Flomph!

The ground hit with surprising ease, and his stampeding heart stuttered in confusion. He opened his eyes and realized the bigger one had maneuvered him so that instead of hitting the hard ground he had landed on their squishy skin. He took a step back with a distressed coo, scampering to get off his friend.

A feathery beast landed beside the group, and he watched with wide eyes as the bigger one paraded ahead. Sap ran towards the bigger one, burrowing his head against their stomach with an indignant squeak, attempting to shove them away from the scary monster.
