Welcome to the world of Lissam!

This is a world in which macro-organisms each have a symbiotic relationship with magical micro-organisms that grants them supernatural abilities. Here, amphibians have gained sentience, and dominate the globe. They live in diverse cultures, build fantastical cities and unsurprisingly, have drama. The world of Lissam is currently split into three superpowers. Here, biology, more specifically herpetology, meets fantasy!

This world also has a deity. There used to exist two groups of amphibians, the temnospondyls and lepospondyls. The lepospondyls were going extinct when the temnospondyls were diversifying. The last of the lepospondyls, a diplocalus named Dilo mastered the magic system, granting himself immortality. However, he needed an abundance of resources in order to maintain his power, thus tricked the beginnings of temnospondyl civilization into thinking that he was their creator.

Going power hungry, Dilo manipulated the temnospondyls into developing societies that are rather controlling of their citizens in order to gain what he desires. However, this only furthered divides in the world as many of the developing nations were already growing spiteful towards each other. They grew different from one another, and now Dilo is loosing his control over them. In desperation, he desires to wipe out those who do not follow his commands.

The Anuran Coalition (Frogs)

“A coalition of city states that runs on an oligarchy/monarchy is also a theocracy. They have a centralized government led by the city of Hyldaei. This faction has a council made up of the representatives of each city state.”

Ranks

- The Tubercule- the council

The High Ulna- The ruler of the each city state

The Advisor-

The Court-
The Inquisitor
The Tympanum
Military
Organized militia

-The Bellow- Warchief
-soldiers
-Leaper
-Croaker
-pollywog

Military families are very common, and often have techniques passed down from generation to generation.

City States

-Ascaphidae
-The city that is home to the tailed frogs. They live in and around a fast moving river, and the city is divided by the terms "upstream" and "downstream." The people here are sportive, competitive, and value efficiency.

-Scaphiopodidae
-This is city home to the spadefoots, mighty burrowers who build vast underground networks. Whenever the monsoon season comes, they hold a festival in which they sing above ground.

-Hylidae
-This city is home to the tree frogs, great leapers who build their city in the trees, and the city is sectioned by height. The military resides in the canopy, and the market is on the forest floor. They value color and art.

-Bufonidae
-This city is home to frogs adapted to an arid climate. These are war hardened people who tend to be minimalist. They specialize in defensive measures which has made them quite essential in keeping the coalition from falling.

-Microhylidae
-This city is home to the narrow mouthed frogs. They are an agricultural city that is known for some of the best dishes in the world.

-Ranidae
-The ranids are perhaps the most diverse of the cities, taking in fugitives from other countries, and known for their assylums.

Overall shared culture-
-The Anurans are quite socialistic in the sense that community is very important to them. However, they can be quite exclusionary towards other species, or behaviours they find strange.
-Music is very important to these people as they are known for their extraordinary voices, which are often indicative of their status in society. Even shop owners will bellow into the streets when advertising their business. Oftentimes the loudest get the most business.

Fangs of Urodela (Salamanders)

"The imperialists of the world, this nation knows no bounds in expansion. They are innovative, and experts in war. Their military is well organized with cavalries, and platoons. The empire is ruled by an emperor who is picked from one of the noble families."

-The emperor

-The advisor

-The ambassador

-The inquisitor

The military in which I have to brainstorm more ideas for...

The Land of Gymnophiona (Caecillians)

"A nation that spends most of it's time underground, they are often isolationists due to their history of being constantly attacked by now gone countries. They are now on the warpath as they have recently been attacked by both Anura and Urodela whom are now exhausted from fighting each other for so long. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes as they say."

I currently don't have a lot on these guys since I'm still fleshing other things out. They are kind of Dilo's champions in the current setting so to speak, but they suffer immensely under his rule at the same time.

The Magic System

This is what I have written on my magic system thus far:
Magic System

Symbiosis with bacteria and other microorganisms

-Two major classes

-Inner Magic
-In tune with the microbes of their bodies.

-Environmental magic
-Uses microbes from the environment

Constraints-

-Must have the means to maintain microbes.
-Diet
-Exercise
-Ability to replenish

-Inner magic users

-Easier to keep track of microbiome
-Has to specialize in one kind of magic

-Environmental magic users
-Has to have some knowledge in inner magic use to supply environmental microbes

-Can use many different kinds of magic.

Magic types

-Illusion/imagination
-These magic users are able to create illusions, and manipulate the minds of others.
Sub types
-Dreams
-Standard illusions

-physical/elemental
-This is the most straightforward of the magic types. These magic users are able to manipulate the physical world through physics.
-Sub types
Temperature
Gravity
States of matter
-gasses
-liquids
-Solids
-plasmas
Energy

-Biological
These magic users are very knowledgeable on biology and can physically alter their physiology and morphology. They make for very powerful melee fighters.
-Sub types
-Immuniological
-Cardiovascular
-Muscular
-Nervous system
-Endocrine
-Toxin production

Magic combinations

-Imagination+Physical

-Imagination+biological

-Physical+biological

-Physical+biological+Imagination

The Current Plot

The setting for this is a world split into three superpower countries. The frogs, salamanders and caecillians. The salamanders are kind of the imperialists, and have fought with the frogs for a long time. The caecillians have tried minding their own business, but due to a country that no longer exist constantly trying to invade them, they became isolationist until the salamanders and frogs attacked them. Now the caecillians are like "play stupid games, win stupid prices" are now attacking them both after the two are exhausted. In order to survive, the frogs and salamanders try to join forces. However, the salamanders try to take advantage of this, and offer up a deal. Our main character has to become betrothed to one of the royals in the salamander empire, ultimately allowing the salamanders to finally take control over the frogs. The mc, is like "well, I care to much about my people" and goes along with it, only to find out that the one he is betrothed too is there against her will, and that he doesn't really feel any romantic chemistry with her and vice versa. He now has to make a decision, does he force the person to go through with this, or does he let her go free? A couple shenanigans later, due to letting her go, he ends up dethroned basically. His journey to self discovery then ensues.

I'm learning more about amphibians reading your world lore than I did in biology, honestly! Wow! I really love the details of each city-state and the culture behind them! I think that's my favorite section right next to YOUR CONCEPT ART. Holy moly! 100% helps me visualise things a lot better and you're extremely talented. Really really love those lines and obssesed with the Salamander.

& maps!? Be still my heart. It loooks so good!

Oh my word. It definitely draws you in and I'm incredibly excited for you that it's all coming together, especially seeing how intricate the magic system is!

P.S. A couple of shenanigans later. . . pahahaha, I love that.

Aaaaaaw, thank you so much!

I'm trying to incorporate a lot of what I've been learning in herpetology this semester. I love, love, looove biology! It's so much fun, and I'm actually very close to obtaining my bachelors of science in organismal biology. Each city state in Anura is based on a frog family that I had to study. I plan on including more frogs families in the comic, such as dendobaties, dart frogs. One of the main characters, is going to be a golden poison dart frog. Her people are the nomads known as Dendobaties.

Aw yeah, the salamander is one of my favorites. He's possibly going to be named Ghaster. He's a fire bellied newt (Cynops pyrrhogaster). He's kind of the loveable smartass type. His backstory is that he was from one of Urodela's royal families, but got banished, and ultimately watches the world burning from the side. He's also the main character's love interest.

I had so much fun with the concept art! The way the city is designed is partly inspired by Naruto, a longtime favorite series of mine that helped me through dark times and actually got me into writing in the first place.

You're so welcome!

That's so exciting and a happy early congratulations with your bachelors! That's definitely something to celebrate in the future for sure. Ooh, that'll definitely be a great addition to add in Anura! And fire bellied newt sounds so adorable! Ghaster is a great name but I can already feel somethin' tuggin' on my heartstrings with their backstory and love interest storyline!

Naruto is one of the first anime I got into too! I can definitely see the inspiration but overall always been a fan of marketplaces and bazaar ambiences!
