Like the Phoenix I shall raise from the ashes
Werewolves make great pets! The billboards were everywhere to be seen. As were the ones that said: "Adopt, don't shop". It was the newest craze. Ever since the wars had ended people were trying to domesticate the Werewolves. But of course there was still those who held onto the old ways that started the wars... Illegal wolf fights and breeding programs were very active. The shelters were full! At least a dozen fighting rings had been shut down since the end of the wars, and hundreds to thousands of wolves were seized. They had suppressor chips implanted at the base of their skulls, to keep them from being able to change. Most of the wolves that were up for adoption were either young pups who didn't know how to fight or the ones that been used as bait for the fighters. Kaigen (Kay-GIN) was such a bait wolf. Born a runt, no one at his breeding facility had expected him to live longer than a few weeks at most, but he was a full grown wolf, scared of his own shadow.

The shelter was having a huge adoption event in desperation, they were over filled with Wolves. All of the best looking and behaved pups and seniors were outside in the front, the pups were active and running around playing. Some of the seniors were offering to braid flowers into people's hair or reading stories like grandparents. But inside the overly bright white shelter there were the wolves that were either undergoing or still in need of rehabilitation. Some of them were lashing out, screaming and beating on the walls and doors of the prison cell like rooms, it was extremely noisy inside the kennels, except one... One very special case. The young werewolf sat on the floor his knees hugged to his chest tightly. He was very quiet, he hadn't even spoken since he was found barely alive, covered in injuries from other wolves, his keepers and the silver cuffs and leash he was made to wear all his life. His shaggy hair hung in tangles over his deep violet eyes that would watch any and every movements. He was tucked in a corner watching the hall between the kennels through the safety glass door. Keepers were hurrying through trying to maintain the "party" out front, they would rush by with more water bottles and snacks, some rushed past with paperwork to process adoptions. Kaigen remained tucked in the back corner of his kennel watching the people rush around hurriedly.

Luna had just finished getting ready to head out. There was this huge event going on at the adoption center that all her friends, along with all the ads, have been talking about for the past week. Luna walked out the house with a pair of skinny blue jeans, a black floral pattern shirt, and a gray cardigan. She quickly put on a pair of flats and left her house and began walking to the adoption center.

As she walked she couldn't help but notice a crowd of people heading in the same way. "It's probably going to be very crowded." She sighed a bit to herself, but wasn't going to turn away now. While she was a bit unsure of if she wanted to adopt a werewolf or not, she definitely wanted to check them out. As she grew closer to the center the crowd only grew bigger. "What was I expecting." She groaned a bit quietly to herself.

She used her smaller figure to slip through the crowd and closer to the front. Finally being in eyesight with the center, she looked around at the currently visible werewolves. They were all smaller pups running around playing with each other. Luna gave a small smile to the pups before turning to the older looking ones. They seemed to be almost acting like parents to the people here. She was a bit impressed.

After looking at around, she entered the adoption center and was met with an overwhelming difference between the wolves. Instead of playing around or offering stories, these wolves were loud and a bit violent. She looked over at the different cages and watched as they banged on the sides and doors of cages. "They definitely aren't happy to be here." She muttered quietly under her breath as she contuined to look around.

A handful of the werewolves fell quiet at the site of the young girl, some snarled and others didn't notice. It was rare that anyone outside of staff would come through these halls so many to notice of the stranger. Kaigen lifted his head a little at the change in the noise levels, that was different, it usually only quieted down when food was involved but it was too early for lunch.
"Hey, Runt!" The wolf across from Kaigen called with a wicked grin. "The second I get the chance to... I'll paint these white walls with your blood." He laughed loudly. Both Kaigen and the other werewolf, label Reska, had come from the same facility. Reska had probably been one of the wolves that'd fought with the runt, Kaigen, and had left scars. Kaigen's eyes flashed a bright green for only a moment as he stared back at Reska, as they faded back to their deep violet the young wolf raised his arms up and put them on the back of his head, hiding his face in knees silently wishing he had somewhere to hide.

"That's enough out of you, Reska!" One of the staff members shouted moving to look in on the poor little runt. "Kaigen..." The called softly trying to get him to look up. "It's okay, come on buddy..." They unlocked the kennel and moved inside, staying back some so not to spook the poor little one. Kaigen's arms tensed and his breathing had picked up, it looked more like he was braced for something than hiding now. The staff member hadn't bothered to pull the kennel door closed, Kaigen wasn't a flight risk.

Luna flinched a bit at the sudden quietness. Was she not allowed to be back here? She quickly looked around a bit awkwardly not seeing anyone but staff members. Were they only allowed to adopt the wolves out in the front? She looked at a few more of the cages examining the different werewolves. She started heading towards the door before hearing someone laugh loudly.

She quickly turned around to find one of the werewolves picking on one of the others. She frowned a bit at what was being said and she crossed her arms as a staff member scolded one of the wolves before opening the kettle to the quieter wolf. As the staff member went into the kettle she moved over a bit to get a better view of who was inside the kettle. She watched the staff members try to call the wolf out, but he didn't seem to be going anywhere.

Luna curiously made her way closer to the open kettle, but stayed a bit back just incase they jumped out the cage. She watched the interaction a bit more closely. Can he not make any noise? She wondered as she contuined to watch. It seemed as if the wolf was becoming more tense and afraid as the staff member tried to talk to the werewolf.

Reska barked loudly and started kicking at the door of his kennel. "It's been weeks-!" He shouted, kicking the door again. "Let me end his worthless life." A few of the other wolves started to joined in the jeering, shouts of "Yeah, kill the runt" and "Rip his throat out" echoed in the kennel. A small few shouted for the others to stop and "Leave the runt alone" it could barely be heard over the commotion.
The staff started trying desperately to get them to stop, running around saying things like "That's enough" "Everyone calm down" "No one's going to hurt anyone". A member of staff noticed Luna and smiled sadly. "Don't mind them, they're just tired of being cooped up." She said it in a soft tone, but had to speak loudly to be heard over all the noise. "Where you looking for something?" She was an exhausted looking woman, probably in her mid fifties.

Kaigen had started shaking, his arms covering his head and his legs brought to his chest, he was leaning on the wall hard trying to pull away from the staff member in this small space with him. The wolf on the other side of the wall Kaigen was leaning on kicked it hard enough to jar the runt from his protective hiding position. Kaigen had pushed off the wall and spun around laying on his back to look at it, his eyes flashed their bright green color. As he slowly realized that no one was there his eyes started fading again. The staff member shifted slightly, trying not to move to quickly but even the slightest movement caused Kaigen to recoil and turn to look at them. He was panicked and scared, his chest was heaving as he tried to breath through the fear, his eyes moved past the person crouched down in his kennel to the doorway where he could see Reska and... He didn't know that one... There was a new female he didn't recognize....

Luna had to cover her ears at the riot that had started. "I wonder if it's always like this?" She whispered quietly to herself as she looked around at the many werewolves banging on their kennels and yelling threats. Her impression that werewolves often looked out for each other, like regular wolves, was completely destroyed. They kind of reminded her of humans.

She was pulled from her thoughts at the sight of a woman coming up to her. She could barely make out what she was saying and nodded. "It's probably stressful being cooped up for so long." She started hoping the woman could hear her. "Well, I just came to see what this whole adoption was all about. I just thought I'd stop by and look around." She said with a small smile.

She had to admit, it was way louder than she expected. With the crowd of people outside looking at the seemingly more tamed of the wolves they had and the jeering from the more aggressive wolves inside the center. She could understand why not too many customers were inside.

"Can any one of these werewolves be adopted? Or just the ones outside?" She pulled her hands away from her ears and crossed them as she looked at the woman.

The lights over the wolves causing the commotion started turning off and the glass doors darkened into a one way mirror, you could see in but they couldn't see out. Soon the noise died down as they calmed down in the darkness. The woman talking with Luna sighed loudly with relief as everything started to settle. "Oh... The wolves in here are mostly all available for adoption. They're just special needs or in the mist of rehabilitation." She waved her hand in front of Reska's kennel then she turned to look at Kaigen and the man on her staff in with him. "Let's just let him alone for now..." She sounded very sad as she looked at the terrified boy.

Kaigen was a runt for a werewolf but he was about normal sized for a human his age, a little underweight perhaps but still about average. The staff member stood slowly and moved out of the kennel, but he still left the door open. Kaigen had been here almost a month and hadn't caused any trouble. "Poor little one..." She said quietly with a shake of her head. Once Kaigen was alone again he pushed himself to the back wall and started trying to slow his breathing. He was still watching Luna and the woman who ran this rescue, his dark violet eyes curiously focused on them. Since he'd been rescued he'd only seen doctors, staff and other wolves, this was the first time he'd seen someone who didn't smell of another wolf...

Luna looked at the cages with no lights curiously. Whatever those lights did seemed to quiet the louder werewolves. Being a bit relieved that the noise has quieted down and she shared a bit of a sigh with the lady she was talking with. "I see. Well I hope they all find homes." She watched the lady tap on the glass of the cage before looking over at Kaigen's cage. The man still seemed to be trying to call out to werewolf in the cage, but it didn't seem to work.

She heard the sad tone in the woman's voice as she watched the man come out the cage. "What happened to him?" She asked the woman quietly. Once the man was out the cage she watched Kaigen curl back up in his corner. She noticed him look over at the her and the staff lady. Luna waved at him with a small smile before looking back at the staff woman.

"We can't really be sure... He's suffered a lot of abuse. It's believed he was a-" The woman's voice cracked with tears, "Sorry..." She muttered and cleared her throat. "We believe, from the state we'd found him in and they way the others act towards him, he was a bait animal. Chained up so he couldn't fight back while the others were encouraged or made to attack him. He's also suffered from a great deal of silver poisoning... And the people who were running the fighting ring were abusing him physically as well." The woman's tone was soft but full of sadness, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a handful of jerky, she held it out to Luna. "He's completely harmless... And he seems just curious enough about you to let you talk to him, if you'd like." She offered.

Kaigen perked up just a little at the sight of the jerky, it was rabbit and it had become his favorite. He relaxed a little and wasn't curled up on himself anymore, he was still sitting on the floor, his back to the wall and his knees up in front of himself like a shield but he didn't look scared anymore. Now he seemed nervous and curious, he sniffed the air a couple of times and tilted his head to the right gently.

Luna stared at the woman shocked. "That's terrible...! Who in their right mind would do things like that?" Luna huffed a bit upsetly. She had heard of werewolf battle programs before, but she had never knew what went on in those programs. Luna honestly felt really bad for the poor werewolves. Not just Kaigen, but all of the bait animals who had to go through those experiences. Luna stared down at the Jerky and took it. "I'd love to try talking to him." She spoke a bit excitedly.

Luna began making her way to the kettle and walked about half way in before stopping and sitting with her legs crossed. She held out the Jerky to him and smiled a bit. "Hello there, my name's Luna." She spoke in a more happier tone than before. "Do you mind if I ask for your name?"

Kaigen sat up a little taller, peeking at her hand, he wanted to take it but he wasn't sure... As he straightened out some the scars from the silver collar he'd worn all his life was visible, a wide white scar that covered most of his throat like a choker necklace. His dark violet eyes moved up to look at her a little worried and confused when she spoke and blinked at her. He very slowly moved to kneel on one knee and with a shaky had he reached towards her out stretched hand, he hesitated for a moment like he was expecting her to pull back or try to catch a hold of his wrist, then he took a piece of jerky and pulled his hand back quickly. He had a matching set of white scars around each wrist. He moved to sit with his back against the wall and looked at the jerky in his hand. "Kai... Kaigen." He said softly before he brought the jerky up to sniff, then put the whole piece in his mouth to try and chew it.

Luna glanced at the many scars on his body. There were definitely a few larger scars. Notably around the neck and wrist. Did the collar hurt him? Why don't they take if off his neck? She wondered to herself. Luna couldn't help but smile even more as he slowly took the Jerky from her hand. She listened to his quiet introduction, but before she could say anything he had shoved the whole piece of jerky into his mouth. She gave a quiet giggle. "Be careful Kaigen. You might choke if you don't chew it good enough." She glanced down at the other piece of jerky and tore a piece off of it before putting it in her mouth. She chewed it for a moment before gagging a bit. She managed to swallow it. "Jerky really isn't one of my favorites." She spoke out loud to herself before offering the other piece of jerky to him. "You want one more?"

Kaigen chewed loudly on the jerky, he hadn't been used to eating on a regular bases until he was brought here. He titled his head to the side again watching her try the rabbit jerky and he responded a bit quicker when she offered him another piece. He slid closer to her and took it from her, he bit the jerky and pulled it to break it into a smaller piece and chewed it slowly doing as Luna had told him, being careful. He stayed close, but just barely out of reach as he ate the last piece of jerky watching Luna out of the corner of his eye, he was prepared to pull away but he didn't really feel scared of her. She seemed... Different.

The woman who ran the rescue smiled lightly at this scene, it was incredible. She'd never seen Kaigen respond so quickly, in all the weeks that he'd been here. It made her hope, even just the tiniest bit, that there might be a chance for the runt to find happiness.

Luna hummed happily to herself as she watched Kaigen munch on the jerky. "You sure like this jerky huh? I've never been a fan of jerky myself to be honest. I'd rather have chicken more than anything." She contuined to talk quietly to him while holding her same smile. She was happy that he sat a bit closer to her. He even seemed a bit relaxed? Or at least less tensed. She kinda wanted to pat his head a little, but that was going way too fast in her opinion. She would be perfectly happy just managing to get a conversation out of him.

Luna glanced back at the woman for a moment and noticed her smile before turning back to Kaigen. She honestly thought that if she was going to adopt any werewolf it would most likely be him. She liked how nice he seemed, and she definitely wanted him to find a better place to live at. Where no werewolves would yell or harass him. She lived alone in a small house so there would be nothing to scare him or stress him out, besides herself that is.

Kaigen nodded slowly as he put the rest of his jerky piece in his mouth and started chewing on it noisily. He was still hesitant about the whole ordeal, but Luna didn't seem to have any malice to her and she didn't smell of wolves or blood. He was still prepared for something to happen, something always happened.

"If you'd like to stay with him, that's fine, just make sure you close the door when you leave." The woman said after a member of staff came up and said something softly about needing help out front. She smiled gently and then with a small wave she hurried off to the front.

"She's too nice..." Kaigen said his eyes were on the door way where the woman had just been.

She quickly turned to the woman and nodded. "I'll make sure too." She smiled and waved goodbye to the woman before moving around a bit so she was sitting against one of the kennel's walls and pulled her knees to her chest before responding to Kaigen. "She is really nice huh? It's always refreshing to talk to people like her."

She glanced outside towards the door before turning back to Kaigen. "So...what do you usually do here? Do you just stay in your kennel all day? Or is there like activities they let you do?" Surely they had something to do while living here. Simply staying bound to these kennels all day for weeks is enough to drive anyone insane.

"Nice at first... But they're always the first to be angry." He'd seen it before, the nice and gentle tones were always a trap, to lure you in with the promise of a gentle touch and then bam you were hit or thrown into the pit again... Kaigen shook lightly, like a shiver, but he was shaking off his tension from earlier. "They don't let me out with the others.... They're worried about the others killing me." He pulled his knees up to his chest and picked lightly at the frayed hem of his jeans that were also a little too big for him. "I... I like to run." He said softly he was nervously glancing at Luna but he'd look away quickly again.

Luna nodded with a little sigh. "There's a lot of people who are like that." Luna gave a sheepish laugh as she watched Kaigen shiver a bit. "Well I'm not surprised. They seem really rude to you." She huffed a bit as just thinking about what the other werewolves said got her a bit upset. She stared at the ground trying to calm down a bit before turning to him once she noticied him glancing at her. "Running is nice. I don't do it too often, but it definitely can be relaxing." She thought for a moment before smiling at him. "I myself like to play music. Mainly with piano or violin." She gave a small laugh before humming one of her favorite violin pieces quietly.

"What-what's music..?" Kaigen turned to look at Luna and he leaned towards her a little as she started humming, his head tilted to the right and then the left as he tried to figure out what that sound was and meant. His big dark violet eyes flickered to bright green as he got a little nervous about the sounds she was making. He didn't know what it meant... Was it like a growl..? "How..? How do you do that..?" He asked and moved in one quick move up onto his knees one of his hands was on the floor the other slowly reached towards Luna's face, it could feel the vibrations from her humming, his eyes were solidly bright green now and he was more curious than fearful now. He'd never heard or seen anything like this. It was similar to a whistle but it wasn't a whistle and it wasn't a sharp noise to get someone's attention, it was soft like a breeze.

Luna looked at Kaigen a bit shocked for three reasons. Not knowing what music is, the sudden change in his eye color, and his motion to come over and reach for her face. Luna thought for a moment trying to think of how to describe music and humming to him.

"Well..." She started slowly. "Music is basically a bunch of sounds that are meant to be enjoyable for people to hear. As uh, for humming, it's kind of like singing but with just sounds." Luna pulled out her phone and went to her playlist to play a song. A more relaxing and classical song. "This is an example of music. It sounds nice right?" She looked at Kaigen and smiled at him now humming to the song playing from her phone.

Kaigen stared down at the phone his head tilting from one side to the other, his now bright green eyes kind of sparkled as he poked at the phone gently in her hand. He moved right up beside her, their sides almost touching as he tilted his head to look at the phone better. "Is it singing?" He asked poking at the thing in her hand. If the quiet sound she was making was... Humming, this must be singing. "Is this how people communicate where you come from?" He turned to look at her his face now very close to her's his eyes shining with wonder and about a million questions.

Luna looked at Kaigen and giggled before looking at her phone. "I guess you could say it's singing. Do you wanna hold it?" She put the phone in his lap and smiled at him. "And I guess music is a way of communication, it's not the main form though. Humans communicate the way we are now. Through talking." She glanced at her phone before looking back at Kaigen. "Do you wanna pick another song? I have a huge selection on my phone. Maybe you can find one that you like?" She leaned towards him a bit and reached over to scroll through the phone showing him the many songs she had.

Kaigen breathed in her sent as she leaned in closer to him. He wasn't looking over at the phone now he was staring at her, he seemed concerned. "You're... Different..." He said finally, he looked back down at the phone and all of the random words he didn't know. He clicked a couple song and then another, changing the song after only a few seconds at a time. But he stopped and let one play uninterrupted, it was Beethoven's Fur Elise. He's face seemed to sadden slightly as it played, it's one of the most beautiful things he'd ever heard. "Is... Is the music sad?" He asked blinking up at Luna, his eyes were fading back to their dark violet color. They seemed to grow a shade darker with each blink of his eyelids.

Luna stopped scrolling through the phone before looking at Kaigen. "Different...?" She scratched her head a bit awkwardly. "A uh good different or bad different?" Before she could even think more about the topic, she turned back to her phone as he began playing a bunch of songs from her phone. She laughed a bit watching him go though the different songs.

Her smile kind of dropped as she noticed a sadden expression on his face as Fur Elise started playing and he wasn't going to a different song. "Fur Elise is definitely a masterpiece, however it's not really a sad song. But it's common for others to feel sad or cry to the song. It just all depends on how you interpret the song." She looked back at Kaigen and reluctantly placed her hand on the top of his lightly. "Do you like the song Kaigen?" Her smile returned a bit as she looked at him.

"It feels sad.... What's interpret?" He asked looking back at her, his eyes quickly moved down as he flinched at her touch. It hadn't hurt he just wasn't expecting it and he wasn't used to being touched either. When he realized she wasn't going to hurt him he blushed slightly and ducked his head away slightly. "I do like it..." He said so softly it was just above a whisper, he then clicked on another song and smiled a little as this short little melody played. Bouree by Bach, he tilted his head to the side again looking at the phone. "Is this still music..? It sounds different from the other one." One had been a piano and this one was guitar. He was a little nervous with her touch but he wasn't pulling away, he didn't feel scared just worried.
