When you commit wrongdoing— a deplorable action, an unforgivable sin, perhaps— usually there aren’t many repercussions for what you did. Maybe your parents instilled the fear of God in you, saying you’ll ‘burn in hell’ if you don’t repent for any sin you act out, but really, what consequences are you going to face in the present for what you did? A bit of reprimand? Maybe a punishment?

Not many care, really. Not in the slightest. There’s no fear in them besides a lingering buzz in their chest.

But there are some actions that you’ll be punished for, no matter if you’re caught or not.

Unnecessary acts of brutal violence, murder, rape; one way or the other, you’ll get your comeuppance.

These— the unforgivable crimes— is what The Presence rides on.

There are myths of her existence that travel around like wisps in the wind, but nobody believes them. Those that tell her tale are labeled crazy folk, as delusional. They’re locked in asylums, old men and young women blabbering on about 'paying their dues' in the worst ways possible.

They find dead bodies in the forest, mutilated and torn apart, but they blame them on starving animals. They don’t seem to consider that animals can’t cause entrails hanging in the trees and echoing screams from behind the large oaks inhabiting the forest.

The Presence leaves hints, hints that people ignore. Figures limbering in the distance, waiting to hone in on their next provided prey. They salivate over the thought of sinners being dropped into their hunting grounds, to be prowled about until they are taken out, stripped clean of their organs.

Some people refuse to believe in The Presence.

And when the non-believers wake up in the forest, dazed and confused, that disbelief will be their last regret.
