Other What's your infodump subject?

Airlines, Airplanes, Logos, Skyscrapers, old synthesizers, old tech au general, old media formats, need I go on?

medical science pertaining to my job esp blood bank, nomura's creations (versus xiii and kingdom hearts), most devasting historical tornadoes, the history of the original 'big three' kpop companies, stuff i learn from joe scott that is either morbid or will give you existential dread or just plain funny (would recommend on youtube, esp the astronomy ones for those who enjoy it here), and some early linguistics :) ye olde english resembles german more than modern (and shakespeare is NOT old english it is early modern english) also it's not ye, y is actually thorn Þ (th) when the printer did not have it.

edit: adding a joe scott video as an example bc this video made me realize how much we take spices for granted, this stuff was GOLD in the day!

I could definitely go on hour long rants about medicine (the practice of and literal medications), space, and various parts of history depending. I think if I were to choose a couple of historical topics, I think I would choose various European wars throughout history, the development of modern medicine, and possibly anthropology. OH, I absolutely can't forget that I practically lead a whole circle discussion about Avatar: The Last Airbender with my friends one time, so I definitely can talk forever about that as well! I think out of this list, that definitely takes the number one slot!

(Predictably because of the avatar) Pokemon has been my special interest since I was 5, so it's something I can and absolutely will infodump about! Especially Pokemon glitches, I can usually give a pretty detailed explanation about things. Just awhile ago I subject my friend to a long winded explanation about how to get a level 100 Pokemon before Brock in the Gen 1 games. Beta Pokemon is another niche in my brain and I could definitely give the entire development history of multiple games and summarize multiple leaks and known concept art.

I've also noticed I'll infodump about the history of the internet and the internet in general a lot. I'm a professional web developer and my boss just gives a lot of false claims about the history of the internet and to blow off steam I'll sometimes end up infodumping the correction to anyone who will listen :v

the mephitis genus and other animals considered as skunks.
do not ask why or how this order of animals became an interest of mine. nobody cares, nobody wants to listen or engage about them yet still i remain insistent on learning everything i can about them (there is not much left lol)

the first time i saw one i must have been 3 or so because my family used to get me gifts, books and random shit to do with them. i think around 7-8 i became embarrassed because, like the case is still now, nobody my age or any guardian wanted to listen to me. like a decade and a bit later i now have a striped skunk under my care as an educational and personal companion. best decision i ever made. it makes me laugh, now because when i have her in public or whatever, everybody wants to engage with me and her? i must admit the attention is not reciprocated back anymore because i used to get shut down.

oh well.

I have tons of different things I can, will, and would go off about in length to anyone who asked. My big ones are: cults (with a particular focus on how they are made, the psychology behind how cult leaders think and behave, and things along those lines), religion (particularly polytheism, and how Gods were viewed by some cultures in history. My main focus with this one though are the Celtic and Nordic pantheons), animal behavior (mostly for dogs, I'm gathering more knowledge on cat behavior as well, though), psychology as a whole, Pokemon, and that's pretty well it for my major ones. My friends know me as someone who gets very passionate about these topics to the point of going on long tangents about them if I'm given the opportunity. ^^''

Interesting! I'm curious - as someone who is part of a practice that is... frequently referred to as a cult - what is your precise definition of "cult"?

I define cult by a couple different factors, personally! Everything I've learned about them through how they're made, how they function, and by looking at examples of notable cults in recent history shows that they all have overlapping trends they follow. Typically, they have one or two people who are the spokesperson, or leader, of the group (if it's a small one) who is very, very charismatic and can sway people to their side with ease. From there, they enforce their strict rules for their following, typically restricting the life of the people who follow their religion. They regularly use methods such as shame or shunning if someone does something they view as an infraction. Primarily, my main definition for those types of cults would be; "a group of people who follow a specific ideology or person." There's a hidden addition in here of, "These people are being controlled by fear (primarily of losing their community) to be kept in line." that I feel is worth mentioning.

This, of course, doesn't factor in the more harmless uses of the word ("A cult following for a celebrity or band."). But, I will say it's unfortunate that what you practice for your spirituality (correct me if I'm wrong) is something people consider a cult. I was a practicing Pagan for over a decade, and have heard my fair share of those comments myself. It's unfortunate how people jump the gun to assuming those things without having the full information, in my opinion. Cults in the definition I provided in the first paragraph are very damaging to the people who have lived through that experience, and have ended lives of hundreds of others. It's damaging, I think, to assume every religion that goes against the norm is automatically a "cult" due to a lack of personal understanding.

Thank you for the clarification in that last part. The word "cult" is misused a lot. I've seen it even used by edgy atheists to refer to any and all religion ever.
