Other What is the number one reason you stop replying to, or stop participating in roleplays?

i having this problem myself. strangely one seems to have a name for this term, i'm calling it NPC'ing

I've head it called "brickwalling" which is appropriate.

I RPed with someone in a group who did this and we nicknamed them "the iron pot" ... XD >_>

I tend to take a step back from an RP or straight up leave for the following reasons:

× Partner gives me vibes I don't like - This is actually something I'm picky about. If my partner has no personality and just rubs off cold or rude and can't hold an ooc conversation, I just can't continue contacting them.
× Not reading rules or plots - I can't stress enough how much this annoys me. Especially people who are dishonest about their literacy. If you can't read a few rules and plots you picked out, you're wasting both of our time.
× Narrow Minded - If a partner is narrow minded and only rps a certain gender, race, only cares about romance, etc. It just drives me away.
× Can't keep up - Sometimes I just can't keep up and then an rp feels more like work than a hobby.
× No Participation - If I'm doing everything, it just seems like my partner is uninterested and it's just not right to have me do everything.

Not to sound snooty about it, but I've been writing narrative for over 10 years now, and at this point in my life I'm always looking for really literate, novella style roleplay. That being said, I can't tell you how many times I've started up an rp with someone who says they're literate and can match me, and then it turns out to be just a single paragraph reply with 3-5 sentences. Every time, I always try to make it work and see if I can get into it, but it seems like over time it becomes even less content in their responses, in which case I just can't get motivated to write.

Another thing that happens sometimes is I'll find someone who can match my replies length-wise, but their writing doesn't have any emotion or development in it. Straight cut replies are easy to make in length, but when I'm writing I like to feel submerged into the story and feel/see/imagine everything that's happening. Sometimes I just find people who don't do that, and it makes me hard to continue the roleplay when I just can't get submerged into it.

All this being said, I do try my best (though I know it doesn't always happen) to let my partners know if I'm not interested in continuing, because ghosting can really suck in any aspect of the manner.

Out of character drama.

Yeah, I can understand this. me and a few long term online friends share and discuss issues in a mature manner. But I had a RP partner that early on started asking all kinds of weird questions and when I made it clear they were getting a bit too catfishy wouldn't stop unveiling all kinds of issues in their life. Apparently they were having a huge giant identity crisis, parent didn't understand, and they really wanted to find someone they could live with that would understand and would even be willing to marry them . . .

Like yeah, needless to say. When every RP reply is followed bya drama post the RP doesn't last.

Out of character drama.
Can't stress this enough. I've seen it happen on multiple occasions. A RP simply cannot survive if its participants can't get along, end of discussion. There just isn't a way around it. I'm thankful that all the RPs I'm currently participating in are drama-free. :)

other times i feel that my partner puts no efforts toward actually moving the plot along, or doesn't contribute anything worthwhile in their responses, leaving me to pull all of the emotional labor. it's hard
This. I don't want to be the only one making the scenario, NPCs and make the plot go forward. I wanna build something together with the person I'm roleplaying.

I guess another pet peeve is railroading. The plot needs to follow the exact plan they lay out, and nothing can deviate from that. Another one is like PotatoPhoenix said earlier: Groups that are too large often loses themselves in their little side plots, and it's impossible to move forward if they divide too much. I like to play in a group, but I think 3-4 are the maximum I like to play.

That is a real fun killer. When another player suddenly has an image of a linear game in their head and won't move the story until you hit the right button to continue. Or throw the dumbest unmovable obstacles at every idea that doesn't fit their premade story. So pretty much the scene seems almost Saturday morning cartoon villain city fake. Extra annoying when they don't even consider the personality, weaknesses, in game knowledge and moral compass of the characters in their railroad track story.

So suddenly the story has some nonsensical rewrite on layout, laws, landscape to stop a character from deviating from anything other than doing something out of character that storyline wise they know nothing about just to move the plot along.

I can only think of 3 reasons:

1-Perverts: Some people (usually boys. please stop feeding the stereotype) just want to do to you in RP what they can't in real life. I mean, some characters can be perverts, that a real trait. But I can see when someone is just getting off to me and that's not fun.

2-Edgelords: Oh go, why. They are everywhere and are so boring/annoying/cringey. "my OC is Drake Blackshadow. He is the son of a demon and death. he is mysterious and hates people, but can sometimes be good to the people he likes. he can control death and can summon undead that shoot blood from their eyes." Nope, stay away from me.

3-Babies: Why do people like to RP as babies!? I do know the reason and understand, but I can't stand it anyways. I believe these are just a sub-section of the perverts, but further research is required.

On the first one I can verify it's not just guys. Yes it seems more often than not it's a guy, but also had woman on the extreme side trying to actually accuse me of not wanting our characters to 'be friends' because I didn't want to RP smut LOL Also had a woman who after I said quite clearly any sex crimes needed to be 'off camera' tried to send me a 3 page worth of porn grade description. So . . . yeah.

I think anyone who's been RPing for awhile has had to deal with the over the top and over powered pushing everyone's boundaries on story reality, and often believable morals, character. And usually despite the 'good to people he likes' part never seems to happen. Or is shown by stuff like suddenly being able to pull money out of nowhere to buy over the top gear, by doing things the character thinks is good but is not, or by just becoming unemotional instead of hateful so he can stay mysterious. Basically the character never stops being OP, showing up your character, or being able to interact with.

And as far as babies and young characters go . . . that has put a stop on so many RPs for me. And yeah . . . I have gotten the idea for some people it is a weird fetish of some sort making people have to take care of something they threw in the RP to the point of taking it over. If not a fetish at least an extreme emotional power trip of some sort. Especially as once the 'pwecious wittle fwower' is their they NEVER LEAVE! No matter why they were in the plot the kid keeps coming back when the plot is over!

I am not completely against kids in RP. I play RPs where someone is part of a tribe, a household, or has allies that are famlies and as such their are kids. But I prefer them for NPCs only and as a bit of cuteness or other such that can be used for 'showing character scenes'. I mean it can say a lot or make someone notice if someone is good with kids or seems to not even know how to deal with them.

But yeah, people can really disrupt the whole flow obsessing over a kid character. And it seems more often that is what happens. It's gotten to where I'm super careful with someone adding a kid for some reason it's like "It's not my characters responsibility. It's not overly bonding with my character in any way. I have zero tolerance for every single scene having a tag on of how much the kid wants attention, is crying, or flat out just disrupting everything like a babysitting movie. It had better not pop up randomly in fight scenes. The plot will not revolve around it having to be kept out of trouble. I don't play characters that take kids into dangerous situations even if they are some stupid OP kid. Also, I don't like OP kid plots. The kid needs to be realistic, none of these older than their years kids behaving way too adult. If all you know of kids is bad cartoons then how about we leave the kid out."

going to add this to the list and I don't care whose feelings it hurts:

Being completely open and honest with a roleplay partner and at the first sign of something they don't like dropping you as an RP partner

i get really easily attached, so i'm actually remarkably patient -- there's a lot i'll put up with before i even consider calling it quits with a partner. normally if someone starts being rude with me or isn't putting in the same amount of effort, i stick around about as long as it takes for them to fizzle themselves out and then just don't bother to push the issue after that. you never know what a person is going through, so i really do try to be as patient and understanding as i can. if you're understanding in the first place, i've found there usually won't turn up nearly as many issues. anyone that i'm not sure i'll vibe well with based off of first impressions alone, i just don't bother to respond to (when they first initiate contact). that's about where my assertiveness peaks, i think.

alternatively, if someone were to repeatedly disrespect my boundaries, i think that would be immediate grounds for termination in my books. fortunately, i haven't had that problem yet.

honestly? a certain game series known as 'the sims'.
Wait, is there a Sims roleplay? How the hell does that even work?

Jomson looked at Bellana, her face contorted into sadness, tears flowing from her eyes. He was finally going away, and she will never had the opportunity to express her feelings.
"Blurba, hepjin goi!" She blurted, crying even harder. Jomson looked at her and dropped his briefcase to the floor, seemingly freed by her words. He hugged her tightly, tears flowing as well. "Mipaa bupaa, blijor, mipaa bupaa."

I remember reading a post somewhere about Sims fanfiction.

Let’s see.. I’m always reluctant to do so, but things that make ME drop a role play is if it’s stagnant for too long or my partner’s responses are half-assed. Usually I’m the one ghosted though. :/

Honestly I'm sort of in the process of making a role play inspired by the Sims :)

Really? What's the plot, so to speak?
Actually, that's kinda the problem. It's got some low fantasy elements mixed in along with some social tensions and a disappearance, but I have yet to tie it all together. It's sort of an ongoing project :)

Hey folks! You can PM if you want, but let's try to keep things on-topic! :)

Several reasons; some petty, but others less so. Biggest factor for me is mental illness. I am mentally ill and often it affects my muse. Sometimes I just don't have the capacity to continue. However, other times I'll drop out over little things like face claims or writing styles. Like, if my writing style is not compatible with my partner then I'll drop. As for faceclaims, well, if the players are using cartoons or anime in a RP I perceived as being realistic then that will turn me off(vice versa as well).

Half-assed responses is my number one reason to lose interest in an RP. If it's just once in a while, fine, but if every post has no thought gone into it then why bother.
