*IMPORTANT NOTE: Mine's really long - yours does not have to be this long.*

Name: Laird family - unofficial to the characters

How/When formed: When things fell apart, the Laird family stayed in their house. The non-perishable food in their basement (in case of a natural disaster) and their respective skills gave them hope for survival.

How survived this long/How currently functions: The family used to live in an upper class neighborhood where most of the roofs (including their own) were flat, and accessible from inside the houses. The family already had vegetables and flowers growing on their own roof, as well as two female rabbits. The parents were paranoid about natural disasters, and had a reinforced room in their basement, packed with several months' worth of food for the four (They'd expected they might by supplying food for some neighbors if their grocery store shut down), a hand-cranked radio, some massive rechargeable batteries, and two electricity-producing bikes.

When the virus got bad, nearly all of the neighborhood evacuated, looking for a safer place. The Lairds had all agreed to stay put.

When it became clear that people weren't coming back, Esosa and Rima went to the next-door Baden's house (before they left, they'd been renovating) and stole their several dozen wooden boards and all their tools. They also took the Baden's male rabbit.

They used the wooden boards to walk from one roof to another.

Over the next two years, the family removed staircases, brought dirt from backyards to roofs, spread their garden to many roofs (they fed the non-edible plants to the rabbits), made indoor garden near windows for plants that wouldn't survive the winter, collected tarps to cover outdoor plants when it gets cold, set aside a roof for the rabbits that was covered in growing grass and had a small shelter, put garbage and recycling bins on roofs to collect rainwater, altered gutters to bring rainwater into indoor bins through windows, and did many other things.

Now they have massive gardens, a system for collecting rainwater, access to the upper floors of two dozen houses without stairs to the bottom floor, and a little bit of electricity from their bikes and one neighbor's solar panels. Urine is diluted with water and used as fertilizer, as are rabbit droppings. Solid waste is dumped in backyards of houses the group visits more rarely than the others.

Group abilities/General Resources: They have the resources of every house on their block (and any other houses their dare to enter), large gardens, breeding rabbits, a rainwater collection system, and some electricity. They're almost out of non-perishable food, because they ate it all while setting up their gardens, but they don't need it anymore.

The group is up high and unreachable because they removed so many staircases, and so are safe from zombies and gun-less humans. Because of Esosa, when they go on the ground (via ladders), they can deal with some zombies, but too many will overwhelm them. They wouldn't stand a chance against well-armed humans.

From Andrew and Maya, they have a lot of brainpower, math skills, basic physics calculation skills, and quite a bit of knowledge from books. From Esosa, they have muscle, great sword skills, and some medical knowledge/skills. From Rima, they have handiwork skills, the ability to take apart entire staircases, a fast and nimble member, and near-perfect mental measuring. The whole family has learned how to care for rabbits, tend plants, and have good balance (for the boards between houses).

Group structure: The group is small and so doesn't have much structure. Maya and Rima are both worried the other is their father's favorite, and sometimes have fights that are supposedly about other things because of this. Esosa is closer with Rima than with Maya, but as she loves them equally, Maya doesn't mind - well, at least not very much. There's no official leader, but when making new moves, generally Rima (sometimes someone else, but usually her) comes up with ideas, Maya and Andrew do the math to test them, and they all work to set it up. Esosa does the heavy lifting, Rima does the handiwork and gardening that requires more skill, and Maya, Andrew and Esosa do what Rima tells them to.

In day-to-day life, they pitch in as equally as they can. They all tend the plants equally and the kids usually care for the rabbits, picking leaves off of other plants to feed them when grass is low, and cleaning their droppings. Rima is almost always starting or part way through some new plan to expand gardens, clear and remove the stairs from more houses, and do new projects in general. This sometimes makes her miss regular work, meaning the others have to pick up her slack that day. But the new space, extra food security, and hours Rima spends doing the daily work of tending the existing plants and rabbits, even when everyone else had called it a day, more than made up for it.

Group attitude towards meeting others:

The group really wants to meets others, but they're all scared, as they don't have the skill or advanced weapons to fight off any decently-armed group. If another group introduces itself peacefully, the Laird family will be delighted to meet them. But so far, don't know of any groups, hostile or otherwise.

Location:Southern Georgia

List of characters, with brief summary of personality, abilities, what they did pre-apocalypse, and what their part is in the group (and notable facts):

Esosa Laird - Intelligent but blunt and rude, Esosa is kind (not that far) deep down. She can be aggressive, and has a temper, but is always willing to try to see things from someone else's point of view.

Esosa is both physically and mentally strong. She's very brave, and an expert with a sword. She spent several years assisting and learning from a doctor in her humanitarian group, but doesn't have any official training. She hasn't had very much formal education either.

Born in Benin, West Africa, Esosa used to be part of a humanitarian group that prevented child marriage. During one of her trips abroad to get funding, she met Andrew. Even after marrying him, she spent every third month, sometimes every second, in Benin or (later) in Nigeria. She's in her early forties, and older than Andrew.

Esosa is the best fighter in the group by miles, and whenever group members leave the fortress (which is rare) she protects the others. She does the heavy lifting, and has some experience gardening (her humanitarian group sometimes started vegetable gardens in schoolyards). Her basic medical knowledge also makes her the group's 'doctor.'

Andrew Laird - Intelligent, energetic, creative, charismatic and kind. Strong personality. But really doesn't idle well. Has a sense of humor and doesn't mind begin the butt of a joke at first, but if it goes on, it'll start to insult him (if a stranger is talking) or hurt his feelings (if a loved one is talking). He has a small appetite and often doesn't eat enough.

Before the apocalypse, he ran a plastic-recycling company he'd founded at a young age. He's the husband of Esosa Laird and the father of Maya and Rima. He used to be extremely concerned that he wasn't spending enough time with his family, because of work. Now they have plenty of time together.

Short and physically weak, Andrew can't hold his own in a fight, and isn't especially good with any weapon (though, he's learning to use a bat). When not practicing, he spends a lot of time reading, trying to gain knowledge and ideas, but feels like he's relatively useless to the group.

Andrew comes up with some of the plans, calculates what will and won't work, and figures out how much food they have left. Mostly, he uses math to confirm that ideas Rima came up with will work. His kindness and willingness to talk help the morale of the group, as do his lessons with Maya and Rima. He's always willing to do work others ask him to do, partly because he's restless and partly because he feels guilty about not giving more solid contributions.

Maya Laird - Maya is similar to her father, and has been trying to follow in his footsteps, her whole life. She's very smart (for her age) and is good at math. She's learning from her dad how to be more charismatic. At eleven years old, she still has quite a way to go - she gets irritable easily and has little control over her emotions, especially the restlessness she inherited from her dad. Maya spends a lot of time with him, chatting, having small lessons on things like math and charisma, and tending to plants how and when Rima tells them to. Maya is good with the rabbits the family is breeding, as two of the original three were hers before the apocalypse.

Maya tries to help in any way she can, but like her dad, her main useful skill is using math to see if Rima's ideas will work - and they always work in theory, even though Rima isn't good at math.

Maya is jealous of her sister, and has worried for several years (including before the apocalypse) that Rima might be her dad's favorite.

Rima Laird - Adopted from a Syrian orphanage at four years old, fourteen-year-old Rima is far more introverted than her father or sister, though her mother is only a little bit more extroverted. Before the apocalypse, this introversion led Rima to spend more time with plants and animals, making her good at gardening and decent with the rabbits. She's always liked making things and doing work with her hands, as she finds it satisfying. Before the apocalypse, painting was her main hobby. Now, no paint is left.

Rima's awful at most math - when she can't picture something in her head, she finds it hard to work with. But she's amazing at geometry, and anything else where she can picture what she's doing. Rima's very creative, and she's the one who came up with the idea of laying boards across the roofs. She came up with the entire layout of their apocalyptic home, removed all the staircases herself, and started the gardens. She doesn't spend as much time with the rest of the family as they do with each other, because she's usually busy. She likes it.

Before the apocalypse, Rima was slightly overweight and not at all athletic. The lack of junk food, need for speed in some situations, and time spent on the roofs and boards have led her to become fast, nimble, and fit. She still can't fight, and is still quite a coward. But she acknowledges this.

Rima has come to like herself a lot better than she did before the virus destroyed society. She's become more lonely, but realizes that she didn't talk to many people before the apocalypse anyway. She enjoys tending to the plants and rabbits, building, taking stairs apart, and is proud of the family creation that she herself had put so much into.

Rima can get even more restless than Maya or Andrew, but because there's so much work for her to do, she almost never gets restless. She's almost always starting or working on expanding a garden, removing a staircase, altering some gutters, making a new garden, or generally working on some new project. Sometimes she misses her regular work because of this, but no one minds - when she's not focused as intensely on a new project, Rima often stays on the roofs to work in the garden long after the others (justifiably) call it a day.

Rima is particularly close with her mother. Even though Andrew has always been supportive of her, because she's adopted and doesn't share Andrew's skills, Rima has always been jealous of her sister, and worried that Maya might be her dad's favorite.

How/When formed: Strained by an epidemic the likes of which the world has never seen before, the CDC faced the same virus that they once made light-hearted comics and posters about with bravery.

How survived this long/How currently functions: The CDC building in Atlanta is built not only as a fortress, but as a literal tomb to make it impossible for any Level 4 Biohazards to escape the facility and spread to the outside world. As such, it has impregnable defenses, and can indefinitely sustain it's staff so long as they can continue repairing aging systems. Both man, and zombie, have attempted numerous times to breach but to no avail, however, explosives could compromise security. The government had, as a final action, recognized the advantages of evacuating, then carpet bombing, the city of Atlanta; immediately garrisoning an elite 'Alpha Response Unit' and stocking the CDC with enough supplies to last for decades, unfettered in the singular goal of finding a cure for the Zombie Virus. A threat only lie for the CDC in the backup generator which by now is the primary, small gardens already being set up. It runs on diesel, the one resource that the falling U.S. government failed to supply adequately; in the event of a complete loss of power, the facility self-destructs. Through the little trade the organization has risked for more fuel, they have lost considerable stocks of canned food, and have been forced to kill all neighbors. To this day, CDC squads sweep the state (the only reason they leave the facility other then to search for diesel) for a new source of power.

Group abilities/General Resources: They have access to military-grade hardware, Hazmat suits, and even two Humvees. It could be said that the group has a finer standard of living than almost any other on the planet. With working electricity plumbing, hot showers, good food, even air conditioning makes them envy no one. Numerous safety protocols exist as do the means to carry them out. Samples of Infected. Satellite. Radio. Internet.

Group structure:

Group attitude towards meeting others: Militaristic isolationists. Believe they are the only hope for a cure- and the last hope of humanity. Paranoid about infection, and enthusiastic to eradicate any potentially contaminated object or person with overwhelming force.

List of characters: In total, the CDC has around 300 souls under it's roof. However, more than half are civilians or doctors. With only a little over a hundred military trained and equipped.

Damien, 54- Acting Director. Workaholic, obsessed with the cure and preserving the group. Brilliant biologist.

Sarah, 19- Mechanic. Compassionate. Disturbed by Infected protocol.

Jackson, 30- Colonel. Negotiator, willing to take lives for the cause. Blossoming Napoleon. Prefers line tactics in larger battles.

Group abilities/General Resources: Mostly civilian stuff with large stockpiles of clothes, food, and tools. One former military who has trained everyone with basic gun capabilities. Fifteen guns, nine handguns and six hunting rifles. A large solar panel setup for power and a waterwheel to pump water. A single emergency radio for communication. Due to the temperate climate of spokane and no lack of rain, they need little luxuries, but they are still welcomed.

Group structure:

Group attitude towards meeting others: Very friendly to others.

List of characters (key characters if it's a large group), with age, brief summary of personality, abilities, what they did pre-apocalypse, and what their part is in the group (and notable facts if you wish): Eric Montessori, 26, Patient, diligent and charismatic, natural leader, former mayor, leader of The Community

Maybe you shouldn't have an outpost right in Atlanta. Possibly within the state, if you have to, but not in Atlanta. The entire place was evacuated, carpet bombed, and all remnant personnel shoved into the CDC. Doesn't make sense for the Military to maintain a outpost within the city when the CDC building is secure. This also contradicts the CDC's clearing of all neighbors, and their militaristic isolationist attitude. They sweeped the place too.

Accepted, but two things:

1 - You mentioned they're still looking for oil. Are they doing that to make gas? If not, what's the gas situation, and why are they looking for oil?

2 - It would be nice if you didn't capitalize the first letter of every word, but that's mostly me being picky.

Jaden Weaver, 24, grim, willful and diligent, excellent marksman, former lance corporal, Militia Leader.

Chuck Greens, 33, kind, hardworking, smart, excellent numbers man, former math professor, Community Stock Keeper
I should've asked this earlier, but what general area is your group in? It would just be nice to know.

For you too. The South is a big place.

Accepted, but two things:
1 - You mentioned they're still looking for oil. Are they doing that to make gas? If not, what's the gas situation, and why are they looking for oil?

2 - It would be nice if you didn't capitalize the first letter of every word, but that's mostly me being picky.
Oil and gas for their backup generators, vehicles, and temperature control for the base.

Please ignore everything up to 'thanks.'

I was going to post something before, then didn't, and I forgot I left it in the place to type. xD I'm going to delete it from my comment now.

Was that a reply to me? I did that one post about the CDC playing some Iron Maiden to lure most zombies from the town. If you didn't know.

I asked WickedKent what his group was using the oil for. I was thanking him for his reply.

I'm Canadian. I say Sorry and Thank You really often.

I just had my post quoted and when I clicked on the alert it brought me here. So that's what I assumed.

Earlier today I meant to send something to you, then saw you already replied to it, and didn't send it. I went to type something to WickedKent, then when it posted, I realized i hadn't deleted the thing to you. I edited the message to get that bit out, so there'd be less confusion. Guess that didn't work... xD

Editing a post doesn't get rid of the alert, or, if you're adding a tag, add one. ( :D )
