  Where to begin with Cha Se Bom, this young woman is hardly seen without a smile on her face and she likes to see others smiling too and so she's become quite the jokester in recent years. Se Bom is no where near as funny as the class clown but she comes a close second with her small comments that keep the class chuckling throughout the day.
  
  Se Bom has a very tender side to her, one she keeps hidden except for a few special people. This tender side of Se Bom first appeared at the start of her parents divorce when she was caught between a battle over custody that is still not sorted till this day. Being caught between your parents caused Se Bom to become very sensitive and a need to seek adult validation, she wants to be good enough for someone because she wasn't a good enough reason for father to not to break up their family.   Se Bom's a dreamer, it's her only form of escapism from the nasty battle between her parents so Se Bom will often be caught day dreaming during the day, her current favourite day dream is graduating from Seoul National University Medical School at the top of her class, she'd be dating her first love aka the musician and then he'd get down on one knee and ask for her hand in marriage. Se Bom uses her dreams and day dreams to escape reality which helps keep her sane.
  
  The final aspect of Se Bom's personality is that she often over-supports her friends in order to ignore her own problems, big test coming up? Se Bom will be making sure the class president's paper work is filed correct before the weekend. Another custody hearing in court? Se Bom will tune every one of the schools music instruments.   Born 2 months early and in a foreign country Se Bom made a very dramatic entrance to the world, she really has been dramatic since the day she was born. After returning to Korea her parents raised Se Bom with tender love a care, they catered to her every whim and granted her every wish; if Se Bom wanted to take dance lessons, Se Bom would be able to take dance lessons, if Se Bom wanted the latest iPhone even though her parents had bought her one just a year ago she'd get the new iPhone. While Se Bom is spoilt she is not a spoilt brat, she understands the privilege and luxury she comes from and makes the most of it while also being conscious that others are not as fortunate as her.
  
  Se Bom lived a pretty average life up until she turned 14, she came home from school one day to see her parents locked in a furious argument. It's something no child should have to see but what Se Bom could gather from the argument was that her mother had caught her father cheating. Se Bom remembered how she went to her room, put her headphones on and blasted her music so loud that her ears felt funny for a week after the incident but finally her father came to say goodbye, suitcase in hand and then she just didn't see him for 3 months. It was like he simply vanished off the face of the planet.
  
  Her father reappeared in her life one day after going to the academy, he picked her up and took her for a delicious dinner. He father had been travelling and he had brought back presents and showed her photos of his travels, Se Bom really didn't care about those things she was just glad that her father was back in her life at last but when she got home that night her mother was furious, she swore Se Bom from seeing him again and this was what started the custody battle. For the next few years till present day each of her parents has been trying to get 100% custody of Se Bom as neither is happy with 50/50 but it's what Se Bom wants and it seemed each parent is willing to go to the extremes to get what they want.
  
  While Se Bom's life has been in turbulence for the past few years she's found solace in one person, her first love, her best friend, her musician. They met in daycare and have been friends ever since, well Se Bom followed him round until he agreed to be her friend but that isn't important anymore. Art is probably the most important aspect of Eunrin's life, so much so that she has incorporated deeply into her own psyche, as a way to understand herself more closely. Her biggest goal in life is of self-identity, since childhood, Eunrin has had issues with a lack of a proper self due to a mindset focused on utility and progression, always requiring that her needs are to a goal. Her perfectionism is so rooted into her personality that she starts getting nervous and compulsive if something doesn't end up working at her first try or if there's no need to be perfect, not even realizing that it's stopping her own goal of self-discovery. As unclear as her thoughts might be, it's actually far more easier to get a decision from Eunrin if one puts her under pressure, as she keeps thinking on and on about hypothetical scenarios, although once she decides, her choice occurs swiftly and quickly, without any second thoughts.

Eunrin genuinely cares and worries for other people, as unloved as she may feel, she doesn't look out for others out of popularity and any other ulterior motives... Though a part of her may simply enjoys hearing other people's anguished colors and repainting them into a new light, as it feels like a challenge and gives her a reason to be perfect, she does like that feeling of helping someone up after they fall, cleaning out their tears. While a lot of Eunrin's opinions and feelings might be repressed due to a lack o maturity, if it's shown as a problem to the others, especially ones closer to her, or it poses unbearable for her, she snaps hard and speaks out, keeping herself composed but loud enough for someone like her, not hesitating one word to fight for what she believes is right.

Eunrin was certainly blessed by the gods by being born in riches and gold, she could have everything she could ever wish for, she would never ever have to worry about anything in her life. At least, that's what people say about her upbringing, Seoul and Daegu alike, many people would die and cry for her life, perhaps rightfully so, after all, who wouldn't want to pridefully stare at those zeroes once the check arrives?

For Eunrin though, things were never about money, maybe she takes a lot of things granted, but her mind never once felt like she was above, it just so happened that her father was the head of a company and her mother was an accomplished designer, though it was different for her brothers who chose to live the lavish life, she was always more reserved. Being the middle child was an interesting experience for Eunrin, her older brother received authority and her younger brother received attention, and she was... just there.

Eunrin found her place though.
It's not like her childhood was perfect, her father is strict while her mother is challenging, and her brothers are both immature and petty in their own selfish ways, many clashes occurred and many scenes she saw that she personally wished would not repeat.

It was just a small thing at first.
Eunrin kept seeing her mother hurrying to make dinner, sometimes she'd even burn something or fail to serve dinner in time.
...So Eunrin just watched and taught herself slowly... And, one day, she just cooked it herself ahead of time.
Dinner was perfect that day.
Then the next time, she'd help her brothers' homework.
Then the next time, she'd clean the dishes.
Many perfect days passed.

It's not like Eunrin had friends in Seoul she'd miss, in fact, she never had any in her eyes, they were just people she knew. All from school, of course, they happened to be nearby and she just noticed that they were sad, and she didn't want them to feel that way, so she just asked how they felt and responded accordingly to what her opinion was. In the blink of an eye, Eunrin suddenly was called a princess as she did nothing but talk with someone that looked down.

Maybe many things were in play.
A desire to befriend the rich lonely girl.
A genuine compliment to the advice.
A hatred born from jealousy.
A sudden shift in status to make a shy girl uncomfortable.
Eunrin just simply flashed a blue smile.
It was all perfect in her eyes.

So, when her mother found a great deal in Daegu's rising fashion industry, it felt a little sad but it would be a nice change of pace, she'd miss her hometown, of course, but it was a good idea to leave with her mother.
Her older brother would be venturing on his own and her younger brother had learned to be more independent eventually, giving her father less of a strain on his back.
And Eunrin was always easy enough to take care of, she already knows everything already.

She's perfect.
That's all Eunrin could ever realize about herself in her teenagehood thus far.
She could only make perfect days, so what happens when they are no longer needed?
Who is Eunrin without a blue smile?
Who is that girl in the reflection?
Those eyes that looked so constantly tired.
Those hands that worked away and away.
That forgotten shattered heart.

Life in Daegu has been interesting so far, the burstling heat took some adjusting, as well as her new surroundings and places, but Eunrin was quick enough to accommodate to her new home and school, and soon enough... She was already perfect again, new people to care for and a new palace for 'The Princess', perhaps it meant new people to stare at her in jealousy and hatred...
But that's ok.

What's not ok is that her mother doesn't need a perfect Eunrin anymore.
Her mother keeps inviting her to go out, wanting to talk to her and to interact with her... And Eunrin sometimes can't answer the questions presented.
It's always easy for her to answer tests and questionaires, maybe with a little work, but easy.
So why can't she answer questions like 'What do you want to do?'.

Eunrin also found trouble at school, whatever she did, she couldn't get a good grade out in Arts, it felt so silly, her theoretical work was very admired but her practical work was one of the worst, one thing she's not perfect at.
Her work was always called emotionless.
It messed with her.
So, Eunrin joined the art club in order to find what was missing, ready to rectify her mistakes and perfect her work, like usual.

It felt like an epiphany once Eunrin heard many of the words said there.
'Self-expression'.
It was that one, that one in specific.
Eunrin realized she never knew who she was because she only did what others wanted of her, as fullfilling and as good as it felt.
So what now?
Eunrin must find out who she really is.
It felt so exciting and new, scary, sure, but she must.

Her first act of self-expression was to stand up to that bully.
Probably her 'rival', considering what they say, Eunrin just felt like she needed to protect... and she just went for it, no hesitation.
It feels like yesterday, how they started suddenly earnestly talking after that terrifying staredown between the two.
He was probably her first friend, as funny as it is, Eunrin's desire for perfection can't help but to want to help him get better... but perhaps it's just how she is too.

Eunrin's paintings slowly and slowly felt less formulaic and blank, with small and subtle hues of emotion hiding beneath those colors.
Eunrin's blue days might be long gone, but she still longs for that idea of perfection, and yet, she wants to see who that girl in the reflection is.
An illusion rendered in perfection, when will she realize that her blue days are made from her own perfect blue?

  For most teenagers, spending all of your time with your friends is the be all and end of high school life. For Park Jin Sook it is often a hindrance. The young man is often aloof but for reasons he cant quite comprehend, it gets him more attention. He certainly likes his friends and is extremely loyal to them all, just someimes he'd rather be alone and with his music. He is never purposefully rude but it can sometimes come across that way.
  
  For how aloof he is, he can also be protective of his friends and others. That isn't to say he takes up the mantle and stands up every scumbag he comes across, but if he feels things are going too far he will react...everyone has their boiling point after all.
  
  He isn't a typical loner but certainly does like to have time to himself. There are few people he is happy to spend all of his time with and that is truly a credit to them. While he likes to think of himself as caring and considerate he can occassionally say the most inappropriate things at the most inappropriate times.
  
  He is extremely perceptive of what is going on around him, a by-product of his violin skills. He is good at reading a situation and observing his surroundings, that is until it comes to his own personal circumstances. There have been multiple instances of girls making their feelings for him obvious and he remained none the wiser. Either that or his focus was entirely on someone else for him not to notice...

  Music has been a big part of Jin Sook's life for as long as he can remember. While his parents were humble grocery store owners, the pair of them would always go about their day to day jobs singing all sorts of music. Some of his warmest memories are wandering around the store behind his father singing along as best a young child could. His family were by no means well off but in the same breath they didn't struggle for money. They worked hard for what they had and that work hard attitude has reflected on Jin Sook.
  
  He was a very active child growing up, playing every sport that came along. He wasn't particulary good or bad at any but he enjoyed it all so his parents made sure he was able to participate. It wasn't until he was a little bit older that his talent for music came to the fore. As the weather turned and his regular sports were being cancelled, his parents bought him a violin. Of all the instruments they could have given him, the violin was one of the last he'd have chosen. Even so he perservered for them and it soon became apparent that he had a natural talent for it.
  
  Unfortunately his talent for the violin and music in general meant that the time he could participate in sports waned to the point that he was only taking part during school activities. He was disappointed to begin with but has grown to love music and everything it encompasses. Whether it be singing, his violin, the piano or some other instrument, his skill is there for all to see. His ability to sing and play everything in the music room often gets him unwanted attention from the girls in his class. Valentines day devolves into a day of hiding with so many requests for him to sing or write songs for people...it's why he has a preference to be alone...most of the time at least.
  
  Outside of school he remains active and when he isn't with his friends or writing music, he'll wander deep into the mountains around his home. He often looks out over the trees, looking down at the town he grew up in, dreaming of bigger things. Then night falls and the beauty of the starry sky over the soft illuminations of the street lights reign his wanderlust in. He tries not to think too far into the future because it means thinking about what happens between him and his best friend. His chest tightens, his stomach begins to ache and his eyes begin to well. The reaction is not something he has ever put any thought into...why would he? They were best friends after all. It was just one friends worrying about growing distant from another friend...nothing more...right?!

  Geon is the result of a narcissistic parent having a child with an egotist. He's stubborn, brash, and arrogant, believing that he's above others and that most other people are put on this planet to be something he can mess with. He's a person who respects the word power and believes that people in power should use others for their own benefit, and as a good fighter and a notorious individual, he sees himself as a powerful individual in the school, and when you combine that with who his uncle is, you have a bully who views himself as untouchable and lets the entire school know it with his frequent rule breaking and delinquent behaviour.
  
  Returning to his uncle. Geon's uncle is the school's president, and because of his clout in the eyes of the school board and any outsiders, Geon is the model student, and any controversies made against him are quickly shut down and put under the rug. Geon has trapped his uncle, who did not want to damage the family reputation in the first place. Geon has threatened to expose how much 'dirt' the school president has allowed to happen in the school if he ever gets in trouble, claiming, "If I go down, you're coming with me." This helps to explain Geon's second most prominent personality attribute, his manipulative nature. Geon has a knack for figuring out the best methods to get under someone's skin and then turning it against them to intimidate them or force them to do something they wouldn't normally do.
  
  Surprisingly, and unknown to most, Geon is a devoted friend who may be a wonderful asset if you can see past his flaws. There is really only one person in the entire school who has seen this side of him, and that is the same person who is the only one he seems to listen to, and that is the princess. He has been sweet to her and shown her a whole other side of him that no one would believe even if they witnessed it with their own two eyes ever since she stood up to him and fought against his despotic reign. While it has been minor at best, he has certainly begun to change and a small light has begun to shine through, but there is still a lot of darkness in this young man and years of hurt cannot be erased in such a short time. He's not sure if his feelings for the princess are love, adoration, or he's simply delighted to have an actual friend rather than a follower, but he enjoys the feeling none the less. Crossing her is obviously a bad idea, and if Geon finds out, they will pay dearly.
  
  Overall, while egotistical, narcissistic, mean-spirited, and a bully, he can also become someone you can rely on and who will care for you like a brother or sister if you can break through the iron wall he displays to the rest of the world.
  
• BACKSTORY

  The influence one person can have on humans never ceases to amaze me.

  
  The expression "some people just shouldn't be together" accurately describes Geon's parents. Geon's mother is Seo-Jun, Sena, an extremely affluent ex-model who has become a business mogul since meeting Geon's father, Seo-Jun, Chin-hwa. The two met in a pub and had no feelings for each other. If anything, their marriage was a business transaction, a means to an end for the couple. Chin-hwa is the CEO of a huge, well-known IT firm who married Sena on her father's orders in order to get financial backing. In exchange, Sena's family would pump a large sum of money into the company and buy out the remaining shares allowing Sena and Chin-hwa to be the full owners. While they were initially a legitimate corporation, they later moved to shady trading, allowing them to rake in far more money than they could have dreamed, defrauding their consumers left, right, and centre with bargains that seem incredible but are actually bad.
  
  The fact that they had two separate houses, seldom seemed to visit each other, and both were seen with many other partners, as well as many other rumours, came to light as the years passed. To assuage the public's suspicions and restore calm to their lives, they agreed that having a baby would be the best way to accomplish it, and thus Geon was born 9 months later. Neither Sena nor Chin-hwa wanted a kid, nor did they know how to care for one, so Geon was forced to look out for himself from a young age. It was difficult for Geon to grow up without a loving parent. His parents were abroad on various business meetings the majority of the time, and even when they were home, they wanted nothing to do with Geon, only tossing money at him and urging him to enjoy himself. Eventually, both parents had had enough of his incessant attempts for attention and decided to hire babysitters to begin care for him so that they would not have to.   At first, having a sitter was fantastic for Geon because he had someone to play with and someone to pay attention to, but he noticed how his parents handled the sitter, treating her like she was nothing, giving her a list of duties to do, various housework, and what she can and cannot do. Geon began to do the same thing after observing this for a few days, telling her to do things like go buy him some sweets and several other minor duties, which she accomplished. His orders never stopped coming, and she obeyed them all. This was Geon's first experience with power, and he adored it.
  
  Geon's reign of terror began at the start of primary school. During this period, Geon saw that the youngsters with 'power' were the strongest or fastest, and this is what Geon aimed for. Geon began training Hapkido during his first year of elementary school after pleading his parents after returning home with a black eye, which he caused himself simply for show to make it appear as if he was being tormented. Geon's plan worked, and now that he was armed with a skill set, he started to work. Even at such a young age, Geon had become an infamous reputation around the school, well known for getting into fights and tormenting others; yet, this was disregarded by the school due to his parents' status.
  
  The next few years were the same; his name became synonymous with being a bully and someone you shouldn't cross. Until the age of 13, his life was relatively uneventful. Coming home from school one day after a particularly nasty brawl, in which the school eventually intervened and notified his parents of his behaviour.He was confronted by his enraged intoxicated mother, who was ranting about how he was a disgrace and a stain on the Seo-Jun name. Geon was plainly not listening, so his mother slapped him many times to grab his attention. Soon after, the alcohol took effect, and Sena fell asleep, leaving Geon at home alone with a desire to retaliate against her. It was the first time he felt powerless, something he didn't want. His mother had dozed off leaving a boiling kettle on the stove. He knew his father would be home soon, so he poured the kettle down his back directly over his shoulder blade on the spur of the moment. It turned out to be a horrible plan, and he didn't realise the sheer pain it would bring, or that it would leave him scarred for life. Soon later, while bathing his wound, his father arrived, enraged at what he had been informed about Geon's behaviour, but shocked when he saw the wound. His father may not have been a lover, but Geon was still his son, and as such, he demanded to know what had happened, to which Geon only pointed to his mother.
  
  Things in the household were never the same after that, and Geon and his father left soon after. His father divorced Sena without knowing the truth, but because Sena's drunken mind couldn't fully recall the events, she began to believe it happened. The incident that started it all was swept away by a larger issue and Geon never heard another word about him bullying people. Living with just his father was simple; he was never home, so Geon had the entire house to himself. He was self-sufficient at this point, having learned to clean and cook throughout his years of neglect.
  
  High school is a time to discover oneself, and Geon accomplished exactly that. He moved from being just one of the bullies to being the worst bully in the school, and while he was initially reported to the instructors, the school president did nothing. The school president was Geon's uncle, and he simply felt he was acting out because of all that had happened in the previous several years, and he wanted to give him a chance, but as the reports got worse and worse, he finally tried to act, but by then he had already fallen into Geon's trap. Geon threatened to expose the fact that he had been making his school look better by not punishing bullies and simply acting as if they didn't exist, and while that wasn't the case, Geon was well aware of how easy it would be to spin a story in that way and destroy the school and the school president's reputation. Geon's terrorising of the school had reached new heights; no one was safe from his wraith, and even staring him in the eyes would cause them to become his target, he felt untouchable.
  
  While high school had been relatively uneventful for the most part of his days, they were simple and joyful to him, he had one moment that looked to be the turning point for everything. The Princess stood up to him one day. There were only a few people in the school whose reputation allowed them to dodge the bully's gaze, and The Princess was one of them; she was revered by the entire school board to the point where harassing her would backfire, but he had no idea she would ever stand up to him. She was the first person he had spotted who wielded a completely different kind of power, a power brought about by compassion, and this intrigued Geon since it was the first time he had met someone who ruled not out of fear or strength, but out of love. Geon was captivated by The Princess, and strangely to anybody who witnessed it, he began to listen to her. Slowly but steadily, she had been ripping away his hard exterior and making him more human; unfortunately, he still has a lot of his past self inside, and while he has calmed down, he is still a bully, as The Sweetheart will attest, because ever since she ruined his new shoes, she had been his new target.

  The world is separated into wants and needs; Alfie wants the validation of others, seeks it like food and physiology; however, he needs the independence far from the opinion of another. And while he thinks about others, despite his hidden selfishness, it is often shown in the wrong ways—an abrupt, blunt inquisition that is often not well-received by others.
  
  Purposely vague, a young man who will often dance around the thought of talking but never quite going in depth, disregarding his own issues in order to listen to another. Call it selfless, but this is more of a distraction than anything else; another person’s problems will drag him away from the claws of his own demons.
  
  He thrives in all hours of the night, tucked away from a family that often disregards him. When it feels as if the world is against you, you seek comfort in the things that you can control—an idea that Alfie is all too familiar with. And while he seeks such comfort, it is seldom achieved, mind only soothed by the smell of fresh goods; Alfie would sum it up to this one factor: fresh produce often meant little neglect, a feeling he often longed for.   Becoming a creature of habit has always been in his future; how he wakes up, eats, breathes, repeats the cycle and rarely strays. While his actions may seem to be bound by unpredictability, it is often calculated—a way to regulate the image he so wishes to keep for the sake of himself more than for others. To him, this is the preservation of his sanity in a world where everything can seem to drive the most just person mad. Habits have come into an extensive list, mixed and matched, often telling of his thoughts and feelings: how he will ruffle his hair in times of stress, bite at the skin of his lips—how he will purse his lips to hold in a laugh, only to snort it back out.

  The patient (6 y/o, m) arrived with severe burns from a hotel fire. The patient was found under a timber beam that had fallen upon his left leg, trapping him in the event. Was treated for smoke inhalation and acute respiratory distress in the ambulance, presenting at the ER with a normal breathing pattern and 97% oxygen levels. First degree burns upon his torso, with a light scarring present after treatment. The left thigh has presented second degree burns with heavy scarring after treatment. 2cms from knee joint/patella was identified as a third-degree burn. Sensory nerve endings have been destroyed from the burn and the patient did not feel any pain. However, after treatment began, the burns became severely infected. It was in the best interest of the patient for amputation from the patella down. We believe with extensive physical therapy and the use of a prosthetic leg, the patient will be able to resume life normally without any further side effects.
  
  In addition to physical therapy, we insist he goes through a psychologist and psychiatrist to battle any post-traumatic stress that may have occurred from this event. With funding from the Hope Foundation, he will be covered for these medical practices for a year.

  In a single heartbeat, his whole world came crumbling before him.
  
  The humid night air which was once filled with laughter and celebration was now thickened by the screams of terror. It had been a beautiful wedding; the groom and bride were in preparation for their first dance as husband and wife. People stood around with contagious happiness looming upon the atmosphere. Just as the melody reached their ears, and their feet began to move in tempo with the song, a loud ringing echoed above their heads. The moment the voice on the speaker announced the evacuation, people began to scramble. There was no peaceful, orderly walking. The older and rich demanded to be saved first, pushing overs out of their way.
  
  It was how Nam-Gil became separated from his family. The six-year old’s had been playing with the young children at the ‘kids table’ when the mass hysteria washed over the room. The alarms rang, deafening his ears and creating a sensory overload. What is going on? He could remember the screams and wails of the families as they all rushed over to grab their children from the table; scooping them up in their arms and hurrying out. But where were his parents? Where was his sister?
  
  Nam-Gil stood still, hoping that reducing his movement would allow his parents to spot him somehow. When there was still no sign, he opted to stand upon a chair to get a bit more height. Still, no sign of any of them amongst the mass of people flooding out. The tightness of his chest grew as he attempted to scream out their names, ignoring the tears starting to form in his eyes. No matter how much he screamed, his voice was no match to the alarm that continued to call everyone out of the hotel.
  
  There was only one thing he could do; he had to be the one to look for them. If they weren’t coming for him, then he’d make sure to be there for him. He pushed against the current of the swarming wedding guests, getting deeper into the midst of the chaos. Smoke began to rise from the cracks of the kitchen doors. The fire began to envelop the wooden structure, crackling with delight as it inhaled its feast. Nam-Gil stood in awe, feeling the warmth of the fire radiate against his skin. The flames hypnotised him, and he was left standing in a complete and utter trance. There was something about fire that had always intrigued him and filled him with so much joy. To see it grow in all its glory was truly magical to him.
  
  

  new life.

  
  It’s an ongoing cycle. Fire brings on destruction, chaos, and heart ache. But it also brings new life; a new season, a new cycle of life has begun. Wildflowers and flora rise from the ashes and declare their mighty beauty. Nam-Gil had to keep reminding himself of this situation. There was beauty from ashes, and he was yet to discover what it was. He had to be patient. He would have to wait for his turn to make his discovery. But there was one thing for certain; the fire brought along a new life for him.
  
  A faint memory enlisted its core position in his brain; lying in an ambulance, feeling his skin boil and blister, and watching the fiery inferno of the hotel through the ambulance window. It’s structure no longer firm or standing majestically but crumbling before the intense heat of the flames. This core memory replayed in his head every day he laid in his hospital bed. Doctors would come and poke and prod. They’d question him on how he was feeling, and about his life. But his answer was always the same; it felt numb. Was it the fact he had third degrees burns to his body that brought on an overwhelming sense of numbness? Or was it because his family went down with the flames that faithful night?
  
  Days melted into weeks, which hardened into months. It was finally decided for the best interest of his health for his left leg to be amputated, thanks to those third-degree burns. Everything remained numb even after the surgery. It took well over a year to process things through; to learn how to walk again with a prosthetic leg, how to cope with the loss of his parents and sister, and how to generally just keep on going on with life. The orphanage in which he was in didn’t seem to mind that he was spiralling into his own black hole. Every morning there was a struggle to push himself out of bed (physically and mentally), and every night he feared for his core memories to run rancid through his dreams.
  
  At the age of eight, he began to learn that the only person in life he needed to look out for was himself. When the older children began to hide his prosthetic leg before he woke up in the mornings, or when they used to call him a pirate because of his slight wobble, he knew that there wasn’t going to be anyone there to defend him. That’s when he learnt how to use his hands and feet to defend himself. He learnt what it was like to truly take control of his own misery and to make it to the top. The quiet, one-legged weird kid who spent all his time by himself was quickly becoming the enigma of the orphanage, filled with rage and revenge. New children introduced to the system were often told to stay out of his way and rumours of his victims began to spread like, well… fire.
  
  He knew that he had to look after one person: himself. Because no one else was going to do it for him. I mean, even his parents or sibling never attempted to look out for him during the fire. If they weren't going to, then who in their right mind would?

  Had it not been for his age, Nam-Gil would’ve been flooded with criminal charges. By the age of thirteen, he had been summoned to the local police station on charges of harassment, street fighting, graffiti and even stealing and setting some school bags on fire near the bus station. There had been talk of sending him to juvenile protection institutions or training schools. However, he managed to scrape by without any charges or being sent away. Thanks to the money and elite status of his Uncle.
  
  Yes, his Uncle. The one who stood before him when he was six years old, twirling his new bride on the dance floor – right before the alarms began to echo throughout the hall. The sight of the man before him was enough to shake him to the core, reigniting something deep inside that he had not felt in so long. He had been thankful that he was being released in his Uncle’s custody, confused to how his Uncle had finally found him, and beyond enraged that it took him so long. But over some sundae, Nam-Gil discovered that his Uncle had been trying to find him for a long time. He had detectives working for him around the clock for the last six years (which Nam-Gil had to comment that obviously, they were not very good detectives if it took them this long), and they finally found him. And that he had a home if he wanted it.
  
  It meant moving to Daegu, away from Seoul. It meant starting a new life all over again. Something about it didn’t feel right. But when his Uncle mentioned that he was the President of the school he would attend, how could he say no? You would have to be stupid to not see the extensive privileges of being related to the President. He could almost get away with murder if he wanted to. So, he moved in with his Uncle, Aunt and his two younger cousins. And even though he was now in his Father's brother's house with his extended family, and the house was full of laughter and warmth, he still felt cold inside. The fire in his belly wasn't burning, and he felt exactly how he felt at the orphanage - completely and utterly alone.
  
  As he entered his Uncle’s school, Nam-Gil went into auto-pilot. His basic instinct was to survive. To eat or be eaten. Make it to the top of the food chain. Anyone who merely looked at him in such a judgemental way received an invitation to meet his knuckles during breaks. If not found in the hallways terrorising the weak, around the gymnasium sneaking in a smoke or two, or sitting in the back of the classroom fidgeting with his lighter, you could find him on top of the rooftop, gazing down at the world before him.
  
  Despite his constant reign of terror on others, there was finally someone who could stop him in his tracks. The Princess. He had simply been marking his position in the school’s food chain when The Princess demanded that he stopped what he was doing. A fistful of hair still tangled in his fingers, Nam-Gil turned to the Princess and entered into a staring duel. As he gazed upon her, there was some sort of familiarity looming over her aura. It brought him comfort; it even attempted to strike a match in his cold chest. As the spark attempted to ignite inside, he finally put his finger on it; she reminded him of his sister. The way she looked, the way she stood there so boldly, and the overwhelming comfort he felt just looking at her.
  
  He humbly allowed her to win that staring duel that day. Hands removed from the poor boy’s hair before he quickly scrambled away. From that moment onwards, with each second he spent with the Princess, there was a constant attempt of sparking that match. To reignite a memory and a time that he had buried deep into his very core. Now, if he could only feel the same way about the Sweetheart. Someone that he swears was out to get him.
  
  Out of all the people, our of all the legs, the Sweetheart just had to spill her juice on his prosthetic leg. Especially on the day, he decided to try and break in his shoes that he had received as a Christmas gift. Now, any normal person would see it as an accident. They would tell them “hey, it’s ok” and go on with their day. Nam-Gil wasn’t any normal person. In fact, the moment that juice landed on his food, his mind went into panic mode. The only thing he could think was how she must’ve intentionally done it because she knew about his leg. And he just continued to spiral. If she knew about his leg, then she would tell everyone about it at school, and then they would laugh at him. They would call him a pirate like the boys did back at the orphanage and steal his leg off of him. They would just do horrible, horrible things because he was different. So, his mind went into fight or flight. And what did Nam-Gil do best?
  
  Fight.
  
  Every time he would see the Sweetheart, all he could think of was the amount of pain and trauma he went through to get to the top of the food chain in the orphanage. And it would be the same here. There was no way he was going to be left down at the bottom of it all. Therefore, the only way up was to push others down, right? Whenever he saw her, he’d call her dwaeji. It would follow with him making oinking sounds. He would often throw his lunch scraps at her, telling her to be a good little dwaeji so she could get big and fat.
  
  And he just kept progressing. Because every time he saw her, all he could remember were those children. All he could remember was how his parents left him. Looking at her meant that he had to face his past.

  Nam-Gil loves to explore with his hands and his eyes, touching and examining the world around them with curiosity. He finds no greater joy than in getting his hands dirty, pulling things apart and putting them back together. It’s a pity that he feels compelled to do it to the people around him rather than actual objects. He enjoys exploring ideas through creating, troubleshooting, trial and error and first hand-experiences.
  
  He can come across as quite enigmatic; very private, resting one moment before becoming suddenly spontaneous, unable to stay focused on formal studies thanks to his extreme curiosity, and is also incredibly challenging to predict. Without warning, he can tend up to build a store of impulsive energy which can explode at any moment without warning.
  
  One of Nam-Gil’s biggest issues is that he is likely to act too soon, taking his permissive nature for granted and assuming that others are just the same. He’s the first to tell an insensitive joke, to roughhouse, or suddenly change his plans because something more interesting has come up for him. He tends to struggle with guidelines and boundaries, fighting for the freedom to move about and colour outside the lines if he wants and needs to.
  
  When in a good mood, Nam-Gil is cheerful, energetic, and optimistic, rarely getting stressed out and will tend to go with the flow. He’s creative and practical with a handy imagination for practical things, mechanics and crafts. Even though he is highly spontaneous, it allows him to be flexible and versatile in new situations. He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty, and in combination with his hands-on creativity and spontaneity, it makes him a natural in crisis situations.
  
  However, despite all of his strengths, Nam-Gil’s flaws tend to outshine them all. He’s incredibly stubborn; when someone tries to change his habits, lifestyle, or ideas through criticism, he tends to have a very blunt reaction and becomes irritated. He tends to use as much logic as possible, which can come across as insensitive as he struggles to meet with empathy or emotional sensitivity to situations. Nam-Gil is private and reserved, keeping all personal matters to himself and would much rather silence than some awkward small talk. For this reason, he has been known to be notoriously difficult to talk to, get to know or open up. He is easily bored and dislikes any commitment; preferring to take things day-by-day and once something has been solved or completed, it’s time to move on to the next thing. Finally, thanks to his stubbornness, difficulty with others’ emotions, focusing on the moment, and easy boredom, it can often lead to unnecessary and unhelpful boundary-pushing – just for fun. Nam-Gim’s risky behaviour has landed him in detention more times than he could count. This is the main reason Yu-Bin is secretive about her own feelings towards everyone she hasn’t built a strong bond that she knows she could trust; putting a wall around her which some people that don’t know her might conclude that she is disinterest and cold towards her peers, and only focusing on what benefits her.
  
  Yu-Bin is loyal to established methods and values and wants to pursue the proper and accepted way of doing things. She places great importance on fitting in with the standards that everyone around her, mainly her parents and teachers, has set for her. She is the type of person who in any group setting would jump to the leading role, not because she wants to or feels she is adequate for the job; but because people had set a blind trust in her.   Yu-Bin’s life was never meant to be a fairy tale, not even before she was born thanks to her parents and their not-so-smart decisions. Because how mature can two teenagers be when they found out they are bringing a life to the world at the sweet age of seventeen? You guessed right. Not that much. Especially when they were just them against the world as their families turned their backs on them, leaving them on their own good luck. Since apparently, teenage pregnancy was the worst offense they could commit after they had to provide them with a home and an education and still they failed their families.
  
  So with two parents who barely could graduate from high school, there were not a lot of options for them. Her father, Ahn Sung-Ho, got a job as a construction worker and her mother, Cho Ji-Hye, worked as a cashier in a grocery store. Barely making and just living one day at a time was what the young couple got used to and after Yu-Bin was born, that also became her world.
  
  If someone asked Yu-Bin what childhood memories she had, she wouldn’t be able to answer like the rest of the kids of her age. Because while everyone else would tell about the birthday party they had when they turned eight or how they had those sneakers that had the little lights that were enough to mesmerize everyone around them. Yu-Bin would reply with how she remembered the constant visits of the landlord because they were behind on the rent or how she would always call in sick whenever there was a school excursion because her parents couldn’t afford it.
  
  So while Yu-Bin didn’t have the chance to experience all the extracurricular activities that her classmates could take while growing up. She set her mind to studying; because, in the innocent mind of a child, having good grades could make her parents happy. But setting such a goal at such a young age was the spark that would light up the fire of the life of high hopes and expectations that every adult around Yu-Bin would set on her.
  
  First, it started for her being the best of her class, then moving past to be the best of her year until finally deciding that she would go to medical school because that for sure was her dream and not the one her parents wanted. But there wasn’t a lot she could do. After all, her parents reminded her of all the sacrifices they went through for her to be where she was. How could she let them down? When everyone was anxious about knowing what kind of bright future Yu-Bin would have but that brilliant life that she was building with her efforts in her inside it felt like a fog where she felt suffocated as time passed.
  
  But while she felt in the eye of a hurricane due to all the stress and goals she had to achieve, there was a ray of sunshine in her life, the class clown always making her smile when she needed the most and a support when she felt everything was about to crumble. Every time they spent time together, it was almost as if Yu-Bin could finally breathe. He was someone she felt she could show her true and flawed self without feeling he would judge her or think that she wasn’t doing enough.
  
  Their meetings slowly became cherished moments for Yu-Bin and, without realizing the feelings of friendship, turned into love. But while she wanted to express how she really felt towards him. She knew deep down that it wasn’t the best moment; not when she was in a turmoil of emotions knowing that she still needed to make it to medical school because if something could ever happen between them, she didn’t want to put him through the stress she was living. So she decided. She would confess her love after she had made it to medicine. After that, she wouldn’t mind following what everyone expected from her, because finally, she could be happy for the first time.
