Obsidian

Going to bed early had led to a restful sleep for Obsidian. When she awoke and made her way upstairs, she found a banquet set up for the expedition members as their breakfast. While many of the others were eagerly scarfing down as much food as they could, Obsidian made sure to take only what she liked and needed. Gluttony was very unbecoming of a public servant, especially when it would take away from the people she was meant to serve.

Once everyone had finished their meals, the leader of their expedition announced that they would need to go into town to gather supplies. There would be a group for food, medicine, horses, and weaponry. Obsidian wasn't very knowledgeable about any of said resources, except maybe fish when it came to food, but was happy to help carry goods wherever necessary. Instead though, she was instructed to wait at the inn with Clive and some other stragglers, a decision which brought conflict in her, as she was sure sitting around and waiting wasn't fulfilling her purpose. Still, she did as she was told, not being one to cause disagreements, and saw it instead as a request from one of the people she was meant to serve, and therefore indeed fulfilling her purpose.

Among the group were no familiar faces that she had met from the bar the previous night. She scanned her fellow comrades, though her attention fell on the young savanna elf in the group.

"... You're traveling with us in order to find the Well of Wishes?" she asked. It hardly seemed like a journey a child should be making, but perhaps he had nowhere else to go. Besides, despite being small, she had know idea if he was powerful or not. During her travels she was often times surprised by the strength of an individual, especially if their appearance would lead someone to think otherwise.

She continued to wait patiently when they found themselves surrounded by a group with weapons drawn. Some of them were dressed in crimson, who seemed to have an air of authority among them. Aside from them were others, dressed in various amounts of armor. The presence of those with the least seemed to command the least authority, the amount of which was positively correlated with the amount of armor.

Obsidian listened as the leader read off the names of everyone in the group, and went on to accuse and sentence them for a crime. It was obvious to her what they were referring to, as from as soon as she heard about the Well of Wishes she had been intrigued by it and attempted to learn more and more. The person referring to her as a stone elf of course got some anger stirring within her, but she figured it was hardly the time to correct them.

"By whose authority?" she instead questioned. "I'm part of no organization that I can be excommunicated from, and if something cannot be found or controlled then you have no claim over it." She quickly took a defensive stance, conjuring stone over her fists and around her feet.

As she relaxed into sleep, Kuma slowly returned to her true form, her face flattening as it absorbed the peak of a nose, her eyes rising from her nape up over her smoothing head to rest in a triangular pattern, framing the oki on her face. Her horns slowly grew out again, curling into a sharp point.

3751c383eb29e195e80c008a70a25fab.jpg
If one were prone to stalking--and she didn’t have a seal up against intruders--all this would be clear to see, for she slept in a long sleeveless shirt, forgoing sheets or blankets. Nezumi’s black form was a stain against the blue and white. The light touch of her fur tickled the oki, causing Kuma to shift away, growing restless in her sleep.

The Ber’Matu resisted waking valiantly-or so she would later claim-until a small black nose brushed it’s way into the hole on her cheek. A groan of disgust, while she blindly grabbed the plump form on her face. ~Zumi!~ Her complaint was a wordless ball of frustration, that bounced back in the face of the rat’s impassivity.

To her, the line from sleep to wakefulness was easily crossed, a solid divide where neither encroached on the other. She had little patience for the other’s plight. It was morning, and though she could be very productive at night, Kuma still worked best in the daylight hours. They were going to find a wishing well, which was a nebulous concept to Nezumi. Wells were for water, how this correlated to un-deathing the man was Kuma’s job. The rodent recognized they were desperate, but for her this seemed like a waste of time.

The woman rose, small buzzes of irritation breaking the silence. It was always so warm in this land. She’d only seen snow once. It made waking, functioning really, to be a pain. The places that were hotter than here curdled her stomach with more than disgust.

Leaving the long shirt on, she dressed with a pair of linen pants, dyed a dark green. For her arms, she loosely wrapped a black cotton strip along each, concealing her color, but not blocking her oki too much. As she slid her feet into her boots, allowing them to mold to the shape, she recalled the humans she’d met before.
left

She would have to choose someone she’d seen for a long time. She pondered, humans oddly, looked different for genders. She had to stick with a woman she had known. The lady who was part of a delegation the prince had negotiated with. Catherine. They had spoken of herbs over dinner. The woman apparently used the plants for the healing arts. Kuma would prefer modern medicine, not being one to risk baiting Kul.

Slowly, hair sprouted from her scalp, three of her eyes wrapping behind her. Two crowned on her shoulders, where the wraps and her shirt met, peeking through. The other remained at the base of her neck.

Kuma began to gather her supplies as a peak gathered on the empty plane of her face, a nose forming, indentations for nostrils slowly hollowing out. Fat plumped around her mouth in an imitation of lips.

Her cloak from the night before was wrapped up, cushioning the vials in her bag, as she retrieved her seal from the door. After a glance around the room--nothing forgotten--she opened the door with another day to deal with Outsiders. Nezumi skittered ahead of her, already having planned to explore more of the town.

Breakfast was strange. It was always so odd to not just grasp the food to eat. Humans needed tools, then their own teeth. They seemed less than effective, considering the number she’d seen without. At least rodents’ grew back. Still, she copied those around her, spooning the food into her mouth. She kept it closed as it filled with slime, dissolving the meal quickly.

The man, Beane wanted them to separate for supplies. Why he wouldn’t already have procured something, even not knowing their numbers, was a disappointment. Nonetheless, she agreed to buy some horses. She’d need to find some that would not mind new riders. There were some of the group that she doubted had petted a donkey. And the snake...how was the snake going to ride a horse?

She and two more joined his daughter, whom she presumed had the coin to make the purchase. One of them was a forest elf, shorter than even the smallest Hokirrupa or Viryu, but her skin a darker Laventeli. Obviously she wouldn’t stick out as much, if the group easily accepted her. The other was pale, as all Outsiders were, though it spread to his hair. He wore loose and lovely clothes, with gold coins accenting them. He was cheerful, which was better than the alternative, but Kuma merely replied with a nod, her mouth attempting a smile, but the tightness of her muscles caused it to seem as more of a grimace.

---
When the very air seemed to stagnate, Kuma tensed, reaching out to merely grab the air, doing nothing more with it. Out of her shouldered eyes, she watched each of her companions. The one at her nape could see no other guards. She listened in silence, catching that Vanessa’s last name was not Beane, but that seemed unimportant in the light of these...men. Later she would deal with the confirmation this well might actually be real. Later. If she did not die first.

She had heard of the Inquistion troops. Mostly to stay away from any mention of them. Even ignorant, she could feel the power of the orb the leader had, knew it was beyond anything she had felt. Her mind began mapping the alleys Nezumi had learnt, but would that be enough? With power like that, could they outflee them? If they sent the cannon fodder they brought with first, yes. If not….well, why else would they have hired the mercenaries?

The Outsider--Kiel Shan--spoke first, and she couldn’t help but feel relief. Perhaps a bit clumsy there was nothing aggressive in his statement. It took her a moment to completely understand what he spoke of--trials were competitions to prove innocence. She’d never seen one--in Ruligark, decisions made by authorities were final--but if they could fit within the rules…

“Yes, there seems to be a misunderstanding.” Kuma was careful to move her mouth, though to be honest, shaping words was beyond her knowledge. Still her tone was measured, the same level she would use when speaking to the Sacoro. “By the Eight, I, and I’m sure my companions have no wish to disrupt reality or peace.” This was a stretch, the elf seemed the type to spread chaos--an extension of Kul, but…how did you hurt reality?

She wished to retrieve the prince from Ronnag...was she the reason? She stopped that thought. What was done was done, whether the Inquisition was attacking their group because of her or not, she still had to find a way to survive. She’d do her best to limit the loss of the others just as much. Besides, if this well “cannot be found” then why by the hand of Kul was execution necessary? From the jeers last night, it seemed many had sought this well...why had no one noticed they died?

InquisitionFC.jpg"Roland Marek, Lyleve Ferchgwynniael, the stone elf known as Obsidian, Lorrin Yumi, Richard Wagner," announced the captain who intercepted the lodge group- the young master mage captain paused, and despite great distance between speakers, the following words came at once from every captain "You have been excommunicated and sentenced to death for seeking what cannot be controlled, and what cannot be found. As since the dawn of men — guardians of reality and guardians of peace. Quaestiones Aeternum."

The voice spoken out sounded just about as young as Roland, and her appearance may have matched- not developed. However, a powerful aura of a powerful mage exuded from her being, similar to those who are also of her rank, tending to the other groups. She stood upon a roof, eyes covered from her mask. Her lips were set into a hard, expressionless line. She held two crosses in one hand, the features indistinguishable to the group; though, they did appear wooden.

Some of those she commanded stood stock-straight, heads drooped, as if they were asleep standing, weapons in hand, scattered among those that appeared normal, their appropriate armor revealing their own ranks.

The Master Mage's face looked in the direction of the stone elf, "By the Inquisition, you are sentenced to death."

With that, her troops aimed to close the distance. The ones with heads drooped also moved forward, going for kills.

Some held typical swords, some two-handed swords, and a few axe-wielders. Those that stood back had bows, some had a staff presumably for magic.

"Kuma of Ber’Matu, Ayana Eyowen, Kiel Shan, Vanessa Wagner" The master combat mage barked, reading off the paper in her left hand as she held an orb of raw arcane power in her right hand.

"You have been excommunicated and sentenced to death for seeking what cannot be controlled, and what cannot be found. As since the dawn of men — guardians of reality and guardians of peace. Quaestiones Aeternum" She said to them in a monotone voice. Putting the paper away she heard the skinny male speak to her. Then one of the females spoke up as well. Not caring to listen, she repeated herself. "You have been excommunicated and sentenced to death."

She used her empty hand to point towards the group as an order for her troops to attack. Her apprentices, mercenaries, and guardsmen charged forward to arrest the rule-breakers. She needed not to interfere with petty missions and watched her troops take ahold of her prisoners.

Berserker.jpg Bjorn was having a Good time shopping with Freya while chatting with and teasing Erik and Pelea. However it was soon interrupted by a group of inquisition. "I have been threatened with death by many but none have succeeded! Your group has no power in the north so I have no reason to listen to you. You picked a fight with the wrong old man." He declares before drawing and throwing his throwing axes into the chests of the nearest mages. Upon seeing one targeting Freya a furious rage overtook him as he rushed forward grappling a still living guard and throwing him into the crowd of soldiers.

Yo Saiwa

YoFC.jpgA hand on her shoulder brought her back to reality and she looked over at Lorrin. Yo smiled wryly, "Ah. I'll go ahead and take you up on that. I think my eyes are playing tricks on me." She straightened herself as she bowed lightly to her adventurer, "Thank you for looking out for me. I'll be out for the rest of the night."

So, she took their patron up on his offer, retreating to the room that was reserved for her. She set her bag in the trunk that sat in the room, pulling out a journal as she did so. Sitting on the bed, she turned through the pages.
It took my parents two years to tell me. To tell me that I'm engaged. And to him. I cannot agree to this. I should have been consulted. I love them, but this isn't something I can agree with, even if it strains our families. I love living. Being with him would be like a prison.

I'm leaving, in the middle of the night. I'll make sure to have my necklace they gave me and the money I've been saving.

~*~

The moon is empty from the sky tonight, and the air is bitingly cold. At least this carriage rides smooth.

~*~

I made it to the port! Though I'm exhausted. This is where I met the famous adventurer, Lorrin. Well, he tells me getting famous is his goal anyway. He agreed to escort me to Centos. I read so many things over there, and I'm curious to know what it is like in person. This could be exciting!
This is not what I had in mind when getting on a ship. I'd read that some people could get sea-sick. I didn't think I would be a victim too. Sob. I just want to keep most of my food down. I'm fading away! I can't lose all that I have in my chest. I'm small enough as it is. Guess I'll go drink some non-salty water. I already made that mistake once. That will not happen again.

~*~

So, I read through all of the material I brought with me. I had to do it slowly, otherwise I get worse. The captain says this trip takes a month. Guess I'll go stare at the sky or go ask Lorrin some questions. I can't write long, cause even writing causes my sea-sickness to get worse. Can't wait to hit land.
Skimming through past entries, she landed on a new page.

She tapped her lip with the empty pen as she thought about how she would write this one. A lot had happened in one day. Getting the ink ready, she reached down, dipping the pen in the ink she had sat on the floor. She wrote her new entry.
I am in Centos now. I didn't think I'd be so happy seeing land again. I worshiped the pier I landed on! In reality, my legs actually felt weird going from ship to ground. Lorrin was so kind, telling me a few things I need to know. I have a feeling the money I brought can't be used? It's weird. Coin is coin, after all. The Champion Lodge's food was really good, and Lorrin treated me! I'm going to have to pay him back somehow, but he wouldn't even take the money I offered him. We're going on the journey to find the Wishing Well together, so maybe I can eventually return the favor. Dancing was fun- Lorrin's face was so red! Can't say I blame him, there was quite a crowd. And he even showed me a few steps that I might try next time.

Lorrin isn't the only friend I made, I also met Liam. He summons blankets! I am in awe. I can only really use one style of magic that all of my family know. Maybe if I practiced, I could learn other magics. Maybe Liam can show me how to do what he did. I'll see about asking him when the subject comes up.

It wasn't all happy feelings tonight though. I swear, I think I saw Vaaltari here! He and his kin haven't been to the province for a while, but they could have shown up after I'd left. I really, really hope everything turns out okay.

I don't want to go back.

After the ink dried, she smiled down at the page before closing it and packing up her writing supplies into the chest. It was time for sleep.

~*~

Breakfast was a whirlwind of emotions. Her worries last night had been confirmed, yet debunked at the same time. The Matugna was indeed Vaaltari, but he wasn't sent for her. It was a relief-and-a-half.

Once talks of supply runs were occurring, she had been asked to join the group for food. She had accepted, and was ecstatic to find Liam was also with her. She had met two new friends, Gwendolyn and Leóne as well. Surely, they'd gather the perfect amount of food for everyone! She even scrawled up a list of food-stuff that seemed like good choices for traveling.

~*~

Suddenly, they were being ambushed by a strange group. The sudden appearance caused Yo to release some of her magic, causing her body to be invisibly armored, increasing the effectiveness of her necklace. The booming voice had her look frantically around. She wasn't a fighter, and she also didn't want to die here. She brushed her fingers across the hilt of the small dagger she kept just above the hem of her silken outfit on her thigh. She was hoping her friends weren't looking to fight back, and hoping they could run instead. She glanced carefully at Gwendolyn and Leóne, knowing they were more adept at fighting than she was, but unsure of what action they'd be willing to take.

Of course, this strange group was spouting stuff about her death being the justice deserved for seeking something that couldn't be controlled. She could only assume they meant the Well, and wasn't sure how to handle that information. She had already excommunicated herself from her family and their traditions by leaving the West. Wait, was this about her?! Surely that couldn't be the case- her familial issues weren't a world-wide thing. It was a silly thought soon stamped out, because it sounded like the other groups may have also been getting targeted.

(Note: These journal entries can be found on Yo's character sheet as well)

1592972290302.png Liam wasn't having much of a good time in the city due to the amount of people constantly around causing him to stay silent and shut down most of the day. He wanted out of the city and couldn't wait to leave but unfortunately they were stuck for now. He stayed with Yo mostly before the inquisition came causing him to freak out. His taught nerves snapped and a mountain of soggy blankets appeared in their location as Liam grabbed Yo, Gwen, and Leone squished between them and slithered away as fast as he could. He hoped the blankets would slow down the mages enough as he darted into an alleyway with the two in his arms, his mind racing too fast to care how he picked them up or the position of his hands. His mind was solely focused on heading towards the gate out of town, they could meet up with the others later.

Lorrin didn't mind being among the group that was left at the lodge, it gave him a chance to look over his equipment and see what he needed let's see here some leftover rations from the last trip he can just add those to the food supply later no reason to keep them to himself. Clothes cleaned and perfect for the perfect image of someone who is a famous adventure and eighty arrows that will surely not all be used during this trip, hopefully. And finally his prize possession a finely crafted Galaderyn Oaks Bow that his little sister had made for him before he had left home. It was very well designed made specifically for him, he could only imagine the amount of trouble she went through to make it. His only real complaint is what she named it "Lorry" which is a nickname that she called him when they were kids.

He was just testing out the drawback on Lorry when the inquisition had arrived through the door and started to announce the names of everyone in the room. Strange he knows he never did anything to anger them. And why are they stopping a wishing well quest it's supposed to be a myth unless? "So there is some truth to this job and here I thought I might be wasting my time." Lorrin didn't even look at the crowd gathering around them still tubing back the of the bow he was trying to look badass but no one needs to know that. "Yep, your still in peek, shape girl" he finally looked towards the crowd and back at his comrades. "don't think they're going to listen to us," he yells towards Obsidian. Finally getting up and out of his chair he draws back an arrow and yells over towards Richerd "Old man when we get out of this I think you owe everyone an explanation on how you really acquired that map." He looks over at the leader of the group "I'd suggest you and your friends move aside Id rather not have to kill a kid." Lorry then let off a few sparks of magic and before anyone knew it an arrow was already in the knees of one of the bigger mercenaries behind her.

Freya Hamrammr

Freya2.jpgOf course, as soon as free board was mentioned, Bjorn just had to carry her off. She didn't refuse. It was bound to happen at some point.

~*~

For this morning, Freya changed up how her hair was braided, specifically something better to handle the heat of traveling.

Breakfast was a feast to behold, and Freya didn't dare hold back. It was nice to get a decent amount in her, energizing her for the events that would occur today. By the time groups were chosen, it was decided that they would go for a supply run for weapons. Having some extra handy, and the maintenance tools to go with it would hurt. Having met Ayana, she figured getting some extra arrows would be a good thing as well. Of course, they were given a list of stuff to pick up.

This was also where she met the other two that would join them on the run. Erik seemed to be the grouchy-at-everything type, but reliable. Pelea was a Quetzola. Honestly, she was adorable. At any point, if she ever wanted a back ride, Freya doubted she could refuse.

~*~

Well into their run, though probably at the end, they found themselves approached by Inquisition. She knew about them, but didn't think they'd take interest in a quest for the Well. It was a curious thing. And a perfect story to eventually tell the grand kids. 'Your grandparents fought the Inquisition and won! What do you think of that, kids!' She smirked to herself, just imagining it, taking her huge axe off her back, placing it into her hands.

Something changed within Freya, a metaphorical flame burning in sapphire eyes. She could care less what the church thought of their actions. And she didn't take none-too-kindly about being sentenced to death, just like that. With a speed unforeseen from such a large woman like herself, she swung her axe at a few that dared get too close. She noted Bjorn go into his own rage, seeing that he didn't appreciate the Order's actions.

"We'll show you what we think about your damn sentence!"

Pelea Artith
1593831072837.png
Pelea had gleefully spent her time roaming around the various shops that the town had to offer. For someone who acts on impulse, it was rather hard for her to decide what was worth buying. Her time as a pirate left her with adequate funds, but clearly not enough. Pelea examined a small looking glass. She had always wanted a looking glass... oh, but the shop next door sold small glass animals that Pelea fell in love with.

The day of shopping brought much fun. While she was first intimidated by Bjorn, she soon found that he was good natured and truly meant her no harm... though Pelea didn't doubt that he could break her bones like a toothpick. Then there was Freya, who was a little scary, but very nice. She and Bjorn were a cute couple. Well, as cute as a barbarian couple with the strength of a hundred bulls could be. Erik was also scary. Really, everyone was scary. They were all so big and strong that Pelea felt incredibly out of place.

Close to the end of their spree, they found a member of the Inquisition. Apparently, he wasn't too happy about their whole "lets go find the Well of Wishes" ordeal and the four of them were to die. Honestly, Pelea could care less. It's not like they could really stop her once she was off the ground, and her aim had indeed gotten pretty sharp.

"Oh please. I could probably take you out in five minutes! You've got nothing on this girl!" She chirped. Wait. Oh no. Pozou. Oh dear. Oh gods. He was useless in a fight, and would freeze like a statue at the first hint of danger. On nothing but pure instinct, Pelea leapt off the ground and began beating at the air. She had to find her brother. Her shopping group should be fine. I mean-they were three tough, scary (but really nice after you get to know them), strong barbarians. Pozou's group was made of healers!

"Sorry! I have to go find Pozou! I trust your strength please forgive meeeee" Pelea cried as she flew away. If something happened to Pozou, she would never forgive herself. "Stupid Pozou never fighting and always being nice to people. Stupid, stupid, stupid!"

Several soldiers were done already, and annoyed glares came from one wearing red robes over matching armor. He was a serious man who commanded respect, named Corvus Kade.

1f397f64eb47671ddcd1d37719d49b33-1.jpg
He stood almost seven feet, looming over Inquisition warriors. Holding an arcane orb he loomed over their power levels too, as master mages always did around underlings.

Surveying weapons group, the mage was confident but uncomfortable. He hated how innocent people would be executed, but Richard was responsible, not the inquisition. The academic moron had spread lethal secrets, and now mission members were considered dangerous. They knew too much about something unstable, and death was cheap when the world was staked.

"I must admit, you are strong and decent people from what we've seen. In our next lives, may we battle together instead of against one another! But for now, you will travel no further than these streets... My name is Corvus Kade, master battle mage of the Inquisition. I come from Ocora City, and have fought one hundred times without defeat. Know my name as you perish, so we may find each other in the afterlife and battle again!" he announced, and several seconds later he buzzed with violent energy. A tempestuous storm swirled around Corvus, and cobblestones were wrenched upwards from paved streets. Glass from shattered windows whipped around, and merchant wares were magnetized. Forming around Corvus was a small tornado that tossed weak inquisition men, and some were smashed by debris. One was even impaled, but the mage couldn't care less.

The random guard would've died anyway, death was certain for someone so weak. Kade was more focused on sending storm waves at weapons group, hoping to murder the brutes from range with deadly debris.

Meanwhile Pelea was running away, Corvus understood and commended the choice. The enemy group was faced with overwhelming odds, retreat was the only smart move. However the creature was excommunicated, her punishment would come no matter how hard she ran.

Turning his head towards apprentice mages, Corvus nodded to where Pelea flew, and two young mages ran after the Quetzola. They were slower, but had arcane power granted by weak charging orbs. Using wing magic they would eventually catch the woman, unless something was done.

"Number 5 you know the protocol on names, they are buried upon reaching our rank. Even number 3 follows this. I'll have to talk to our supervisor about this if you pull a stunt like that again." He mentally transmitted to 5.

Gwendolyn walked the streets of Whaleshell Port and took in the scenery. The marketplaces were full of life and it put a smile on her face. It was quite warm today and Gwen was happy she had changed into a lighter outfit. She stayed close to Leóne such as Liam stayed close to Yo. She figured they had met in the tavern the night before and understood familiarity was comforting to them. Straying away, she walked up to a stand selling fruit and vegetables and she began talking to the merchant. "Do you sell anything in bulk?" She asked giving the man a sweet smile. As the man answered, Gwen picked a few apples from their bin and silently put them into her bag. "You do? Id gladly take-" Gwen was interrupted by a booming voice.

She quickly turned around to see that her and the group she was with were surrounded by a troop she recognized to be the Inquisition. She listened as who she figured to be a master mage, list their names. Gwen flinched a little when her last name was spoken due to her trying to keep her family name to herself. She cursed at herself for putting her last name on the parchment thinking that only Richard would read it. Turning her attention back to the Inquisition, her heart dropped when the leader announced that they would be sentenced to death. Scanning the area quickly, Gwen figured the only way out was to fight. Looking at her group members, it seemed like only herself and Leóne would have a chance at defeating the troop. Luckily for her, she hated the Inquisition and had always wanted to show them how much better students of the College of Arcane Arts were.

Gripping the staff in her hand, she prepared herself to fight. Creating arcane energy in her other hand, Gwen went to cast a spell but was grabbed by Liam. She was pulled into an alleyway along with the others. "Liam? Are you crazy? We could have fought them." She whispered. She was a little annoyed but knew she had to be calm to deal with the situation at hand. Hearing the Inquisitor troop approaching, Gwen quickly casted a large invisibility spell on her and the others. It wouldn't last long due to the amount of energy the spell needed, but hopefully it was enough to lose the troop.

Ayana Eyowen

31abd45b0fa076583bd9ab792fb28a10 (1).jpg
Ayana sensed foul emotions overhead, so when her group was surrounded she was far from shocked. Random violence was expected around humans, but when accusations were explained, the huntress aggressively wondered 'What crimes have we done? We have been peaceful and observant of human laws!'

Then punishments were announced — execution was unacceptable for obvious reasons. Ayana needed her aquamarine blood running warm, and everyone back home needed her too. Oppressive churches could send thousands and nothing would change, she would rescue the islands even when outnumbered. Her unreal confidence was required when so much was staked, and her unbothered mood was shared by groupmates, who were downright cheerful considering the situation!

Looking over at the others, the young warrior wanted to boost morale and announced "I have battled many monstrosities who dwarf these men. Whatever this inquisition group is, they are relatively simple to defeat — she went, whipping her bow around from behind. Taking two arrows from her enchanted elemental quiver, she decided flame would serve best when standard guards came close. Drawing her arm with elegant speed, the young huntress took careful aim, and unleashed two arrows at once. Both found targets, and both men erupted with green flames.

Most people would be happy landing attacks, but Ayana was depressed seeing success. Slaying dangerous animals was nothing compared to sentient beings, and watching humans pass away made her gag. Ayana suppressed nauseous waves, as emotions and foul odors crashed against her constitution. But she understood how empathy could be weakness, and knew she was being too emotional.

Ayana breathed deep, recomposing emotions and collecting thoughts because logic was needed. She needed to remain calm, and to understand teammates. Information about her group was crucial for surviving.

"I can defeat many, but the huge beasts wearing armor and the commander look dangerous without help... are any of you trained?" she asked, trying to understand the group as another arrow flew from her bow. This one was imbued with wind from her enchanted quiver, and sent a guard flying into a market stall. The attack was much more humane than flames, non lethal too.

Then, from behind the huntress came Vanessa's brave voice. "I'm not trained but I'll try, this isn't my first time dealing with these bastards!" she went with undue confidence, slipping a four inch blade from a white leather scabbard. She was commendable, but Ayana narrowed her eyes with condescension.

Pocket knives and best intentions wouldn't defeat a mob of killers.

Master Elizabeth

The hood of the red robe came down to reveal the wrinkled face of a scowling old woman. Her white hair was tied back in bun, angry brown eyes fell upon the four marks she had been given, two women who looked to be human, a human man, and a lad with a snake tail. Before giving her speech she noticed one of the women sneaking some apples into her bag, and opened her mouth to chew her out, but instead felt the other master mages talking. She went ahead and let the words flow out from her lips as well, and after she had finished, noticed the sudden conjuring of armor one of the women did. Before anyone else made a move, she went ahead and spoke.

"Now that that stupid speech is over... do you lot know how much trouble you've caused me?!" she yelled in a hoarse voice. "I work hard to keep things peaceful in Whaleshell and train my apprentices well, and you all go blabbering and making plans to find something that doesn't even exist! Why couldn't you have had that discussion outside the gates? Well now you've forced my hand, and I have to take time out of-" Before she could finish a large pile of blankets appeared in front of the four.

Breaking the confusion, one of the apprentice mages moved towards the blankets and pulled one of them off the mountain. "Um... they're wet..."

"That's quite alright," the master mage said as she stepped forth. "The temple has been getting quite drafty lately, and none of the higher ups have been giving me any money for blankets." She raised the orb in her hand and watched it grow brighter for a moment before the towels began to glow as well and vanished with the light. "With just some fire magic we'll be able to dry those out and be warm and toasty!" She turned to her apprentices with a smile.

"Master Elizabeth, they ran off... should we go after them?" one of the other apprentices asked, bringing her back to the moment.

"I suppose we have to... sadly as long as they're in the city port they're my responsibility... The fools in charge won't let me hear the end of if I don't do something. Honestly, I don't know who decided that they're fit for the job, and why they think-" The group quickly started to run forward. Master Liz, with a slightly surprised expression, once again turned to the orb in her hand. As it glowed this time, her feet lifted from the ground and she zoomed forward to join the group. "Don't you run away while I'm talking to you!" she scolded.

"Sorry, Master," one of them said as they continued moving, "but if we kept waiting we would have surely lost them."

"Yes I suppose you're right..." the elder woman grumbled as she continued to float along with them. "Don't wear yourselves out too much though! We still have work to do! And don't get yourselves hurt! I still need to pick out my successor and don't need them dying before I do! Just try to drive them out of the city.

"And I know you guardsmen and sell-swords don't work for me, but even if you manage to take any heads you're not getting any bonuses from me! They don't even pay me enough to buy blankets for my apprentices, or to hire someone to fix drafts! Who manages the money for this organization? I need to have a word-"

"They're not here..." The apprentice cut her off as they looked around the corner that he had seen Liam turn.

"Don't you know it's rude to interrupt?! Who taught you manners?! They've left me with quite some-" This time she herself stopped speaking. "Wait a minute... I feel a weak concealment spell..." This time she didn't need to rely on the orb, and instead just waved a hand to remove the veil that had been placed over the four. "There you fools are, ruining the peace and quiet of my city with your fantastical claims! You've taken up enough of my time for today! Now shoo! Get lost!" The guardsmen and mercenaries readied their weapons, and the apprentices readied simple fire and wind spells as they slowly approached.

Kiel Shan

Sadly Kiel's request for a trial was met with a repetition of their sentence. He watched with a frown as the troops began to advance around them.

"Oh dear..." he said, "it seems they won't listen to reason." He turned to the little forest elf, who boasted about her kills, and then watched as she drew her bow and sent forth two arrows into the hearts of two of the soldiers. Like her, he too had an expression of sorrow. "What a shame... precious life wasted..." he said softly.

When the short woman asked if the others were trained, Kiel shook his head. "No, sadly I'm not," he responded. "I've managed to use the dancing I've learned for self-defense though. It's just like dances which emulate fights, except it's not coordinated beforehand and you actually make contact with your partner!" He gave a smile before drawing his staff and turning to face the troops closest to him. "Please forgive me for any pain I inflict on you."

Kiel quickly sidestepped a slash from a blade, and leaned out of the way of a jab from a spear. He started spinning his staff in his hand and held it forward in front of him. A gust of wind started blowing forth from the spinning rod as if it was a fan, one strong enough to send two of the soldiers tumbling backwards onto the ground.

As another man tried to (quite literally) stab him in the back, he twisted to dodge the blade and turned to face him. His staff only stopped spinning for a moment, during which he used it to sweep the man off of his feet. Spinning it in a way to create an upward swinging motion, Kiel used his staff to conjure a small spire of rock, which came out of the ground with enough force to throw the armored man into the air and back.

Having taken care of the enemies in his immediate proximity, he turned around to see how his allies were doing. The ends of his spinning staff were quickly lit with flames, giving the illusion of him holding a flaming wheel in his hand. He turned, twirled, and swung his staff in various directions at different angles to shoot forth balls of fire, sending them flying towards the foes which were not quite in range for hand to hand combat.

Leóne was amazed how moods soured when fucking zealots appeared. He despised anyone who quoted commandments, and how governments gave them control. Modern church leaders were power-drunk from noble concessions, and these days execution orders were passed around like candy. Leóne assumed he would never become a victim, but now excommunication hung around his innocent neck as a noose.

'The fucking fanatics'

Leóne was annoyed, and anger made him combat ready, even when enemy troops surrounded his group. The boulevard seemed claustrophobic, so dense were inquisition ranks, and the rogue pulled knives while thinking — worse odds have won before, today's no different! The cloaked zealots would lose, even when commanded by a woman who exuded experienced energy. A woman who seemed extremely capable, and extremely casual compared to other Master Mages. Hearing her ramble made Leóne laugh, despite how poor his situation was.

"We meet where we want, we drink where we want and we do what we want. You're church is mistaken, thinking we'll be controlled... thinking we'll be executed without — Leóne taunted, but was interrupted when everything flipped upside-down! The rogue was swept away, looking surprised at how strong snakeman was! Liam could think fast too, as grabbing everyone and dashing away was the smart move, even when Leóne wanted combat. But even when the southern snake made sense, getting manhandled annoyed the older man who muttered an angry "Put me down, I have legs dammit!"

Complaints were eventually answered once ground was covered, and vexed words almost escaped Leóne, but he stopped short because focus was needed now. Enemies would charge them soon, staying calm was crucial! But when inquisition men moved past Liam's obstacle, they dead-stopped. Puzzled looks played across faces, men scratched heads and everyone looked lost. Gwen had fooled every opponent!

Except for one — the master mage.

The expert destroyed mirage magic, returning food group to square one. Leóne was disappointed seeing a good plan wasted, but narrow alleyways were better than wide streets. Smaller numbers were helped when only four people could stand side-by-side. Even though the plan crashed, the new location was a good silver lining.

"We were close, but that lady is a problem. Master mages..." Leóne mentioned insinuating power when last words faded, and once a moment passed he explained "Gwen is right, we can battle these fanatics, especially in this alley. They're gonna funnel right into our magic, and my throwing knives too! I know you might be scared Liam but trust me, we've been around" nodding Gwen's way.

As inquisition members began charging down the narrow path, Leóne looked at Saiwa who's strength was unknown. How capable she was, was a mystery the rogue wondered about when quipping "I hope you're good in a pinch because this is about to get intense!"

Once words were done, Leóne shot two blades at two targets. Both were mage apprentices and both took knives at kneecaps. Sprawled across the ground they landed hard, and anyone behind them was tripped. Anyone behind those men became tangled too, and the chain reaction continued!

Leóne's simple attack had created the medieval version of an interstate pileup, and watching along he thought — now this is some of my best work yet!

Talking failed. With barely a moment gained. Expected though, few execution ceremonies took long. At least the leader seemed the type to watch from behind. They’d have to keep an eye out for that orb--what was that?--but the minions were first. Hopefully next would be fleeing. Find a bolt hold--Nezumi’d have suggestions--and interrogate the daughter to see if she has a clue what is happening.

~Return to her lodge--see what is happening there.~ Kuma redirectly her bondmate, who upon feeling her fear, attempted to reach her. Then the bond narrowed, limiting her perception to her own.

With a twist of her hand, Kuma spun the air she'd reached for, blasting it toward the group. The Laventeli elf rallied reassuringly quickly, though the flaming arrows were a surprise. Effective though. Especially as her gust fanned them further, spreading outward.

“I am trained,” she confirmed. Her shoulder’s eye caught a flash of a grimace, as the elf rearmed. It was likely the smell. Why did humanoid flesh smell so much worse than the flesh of animals? “Perhaps we focus on the cannon fodder before leaving?” On her other side, the pale girl spoke of experience. Not with weaponry, which would have been helpful, but with this sect. Obviously her “father” left out a lot in his speech. Why couldn’t this group have stepped in then? She would have listened.

A moot point now, a fight would be necessary. And she wanted it over quickly. With a sharp jab, Kuma shot a burst of cold directly at her chest. The effect was immediate, finally allowing her to awaken. Synapses flared, her outer skin hardening in preparation. She shifted her grip on her bo staff, limiting her swings in deference to her companions. Her work was efficient: less magic, just in case, but short jabs and blocks.

mastermage;).jpg

The master combat mage, named "Number 2", watched as some of her lowlife militia fell and yawned a little. Routine stops have become boring and she felt like her skill could be used in other areas, but alas, she will always do what the inquisition tells her to. She didn't bother paying attention to the petty fight her prisoners were attempting to put up and was beginning to get bored. She never participated in the arrests but this assignment was taking longer than needed. It wasn't her fault that some of the dumbest mages were assigned to her cases.

Number 2 raised the orb in her hand and summoned lightning, striking near her opponents. She struck a nearby roof causing shingles to crash to the ground and shards of stone and wood scattered along the ground. She wanted to have a bit of fun so she decided not to immediately kill them. She also wanted to torture them a little once they were captured. Letting go of the orb in her hand, she let it float freely as she summoned her bow of flames and drew back the bowstring. As she drew back, an arrow appeared. Looking down the spine of her flaming arrow, she released the string and buried the arrow into one of the females' legs. By the process of elimination, she determined the female to be Vanessa Wagner.

A smile growing on her face, she yearned to inflict more pain. Drawing her string back a second-time to summon another arrow, she aimed at the male, Keil Shan. This time, she buried her arrow into the boys' arm. She gleefully laughed and her bow disappeared but her arrows stayed in her prisoners' limbs. "I want you to beg for my nonexistent mercy, street rats." She snarled, taking the orb back into her hand. She summoned more lightning and laughed, enjoying the show.

Kiel Shan

The man let out a pained gasp as the the fiery arrow dug into his arm while he was jumping out of the way of a lightning bolt. He bit his lips and blinked back a few tears as his light-blue eyes drifted down to the wound.

"Well at least it'll be disinfected..." he muttered, always looking at the positive, before quickly pulling it out and dropping it to the ground. He hissed as the flames coming off of it seared his palm as well. Thankfully the cold steel of his staff brought a comforting sensation to the burnt hand.

"I hope someone in our group is trained in medicine," Kiel commented, once again twirling the staff. For now though, he would be able to hold on. He turned to look at the other woman who got struck, though still keeping his attention on the foes surrounding him. "Are you okay?"

He jumped out of the way of a few more lightning bolts, and spun the staff over his head in order to block falling debris from the strikes on nearby buildings. Magic once again started to flare around the ends of his staff, and cold energy emanated along with a light blue glow. This time, instead of aiming his blasts at the foot soldiers surrounding them, he sent them flying towards crimson clad woman who had landed a blow on him moments ago and seemed to be heading this attack.

Time to leave was two arrows ago. The leader flipped quickly into nuts. The type that would flay you alive, then heal you to see if you’d react differently the second time. The lightning was just a scare tactic-at least nothing had fallen yet, but the bow...Vanessa was an acceptable target. It was her and her father’s fault they were in this situation.

Kuma’s analysis of the leader strengthened. No, the girl was merely another being to suffer, though she led the ceremony, this leader did not care for her doctrine. Pointing out her stronger culpability (and knowledge) would be useless. And her acts, which now included the man--shit, she actually didn’t mind that one--followed attrition, and she was still in line.

Her mind raced. No one in this country would lend them aid against the Inquisition. The sewers, a human entrance five streets down, would be less than pleasant with that lightning. Still an option. It’d be unpleasant with those wounds, but the man could keep his above the water. The woman would likely have to be dragged anyway, what’s a little infection.

Kuma’s motions began shifting the fodder she was fighting between their group and the crazy lady. More bodies meant more she’d have to climb through when they fled. She shifted her grip on her staff, settling into general spins to block oncomers. With the other, she sent a blast of ice across the ground, causing a layer to freeze beneath the group. It wouldn’t last long, but mud was nice too. As long as they avoided it themselves.

In preparation for running, her form shifted, her leg thickening as her ankle and foot narrowed. Catching the shoe on the tip of her foot, she kicked it free, its mate following next. Her legs returned to their natural form, flexed for speed, her feet regrowing her three toes and hardening against the dirt of the street.

    Torn Apart

She stood at the ready. Her orders had been brief, she was to continue with Corvus and end the excommunicated. In reality she didn’t much care to get involved. Corvus could do that well enough on his own, let alone with the small army of Elite Guardsmen. Instead she oversaw from her position not yet coming forth as Corvus chose to. Instead she would do as she did best and toe the line between ranged and melee.

She started charging up the air around them all. Heat, power, the unease feel of something grabbing you down. She wasn’t the best at illusions and it certainly wasn't in her usual forte but she would do her best to support out of the way. They certainly didn’t look like much but they’d been forewarned that this group was filled with the more volatile idiots of their group.

Any person could get lucky and get a kill shot in given the right keg of circumstances. It seemed her thoughts were justified as an ax went flying out into the crowd of apprentice mages. What savagery. She started to increase her flames with the orb and soon waves of fire surrounded her. She went flickering in and out of sight as she circled around the group going to throw stray whips of flame out at the group, keeping them on their toes as Corvus continued his usual blunt force attacks.

She couldn’t do anything for the two struck down, yet she could do her damn best to make sure another would not take their place. Ice cold anger fed the flames of her hellfire. She could jump in and attack but she didn’t want to get too close to the brutes. While she would prefer to lay them out like animals from afar the location just wasn’t practical enough for it. She had argued to let them leave town and simply set their camp ablaze with them in it, the far safer option, yet once again the inquisition prioritized as they wished.

The fool threw a living guard into a line of soldiers as she stopped raising her hand as she halted the guard from his flight, placing him down on the ground safely. A woman began to flee and she nearly let her go but Corvus had already sent some apprentice mages after her. She looked to her own section of the battalion. She nodded as she allowed the apprentice mages and general soldiers of her battalion to follow. They’d already seen two cut down before them. These young ones need not risk not seeing tomorrow on the church's idiocy.

Beside her stood only her most elite guardsmen. As it should be, it was a fool's errand to send trainees on a mission to put down old warriors who’d already lived too long. She started signing for them all to get behind her and Corvus. Once she had thinned her crowd and now she sent a pillar of flame at the feet of the excommunicated.

Yo Saiwa

YoFC.jpgYo stiffened when she was suddenly grabbed. Of course, their escape meant a lot of their food haul was left alone in the cart. She had been smart when they were shopping to have stuffed some morsels into the bag she carried around. And she didn't steal them, unlike Gwen, which she had noticed right before they were attacked. Then again, maybe the attack made her forget. Right, that could be it. No need to judge without knowing the full story. She always tried to follow that.

Now registering just who had grabbed at her, she kind of relaxed just as Leóne's angered voice. It was hard to relax in a life or death situation, but she wasn't going to argue about being quickly carried away. Though she did slightly wonder how much faster they could run if they used their own legs, and how much Liam was slowed down by all three of their weights. She had read before that snakes are very powerful, so maybe he was fine.

Looking back, she could see a pile of blankets on the ground and confused enemies. They didn't seem nearly as vexed at the blankets than they did by looking in their direction. She eventually figured it had to have been a trick one of the other two pulled. Likely, it was Gwendolyn. She remembered them talking about Lunar Island before they had left for the run.

She knew a little about the Inquisition in her readings, but she never imagined she would end up being a target. Though, maybe it did make some sense? She couldn't focus enough to wrap her brain about it. Her energy needed directed elsewhere.

Once set back to feet being planted on the ground, she drew her own dagger from her thigh's sheath, attempting to put a determined look on her face, though failing. She knew how her magic worked, so she could at least feel okay with any piercing weapons going for her. She channeled as much of her magic power as she could to encase her body, her necklace helping to enhance her protection.

Once a pile-up occurred of mages, she wasn't as concerned about the magic spells. She took a deep breath, keeping an eye on the enemies ahead in the narrow path, "Run! I'll stay in the back and keep up. We shouldn't wait for them to run around and trap us in." She didn't dare go to hit anyone though, as she didn't want to break away from her comrades.

rp1.jpg

Gwendolyn watched as the Inquisition mage and her troops stepped into the alleyway. She hoped her spell was enough to buy them time but the master mage dispelled her concealment spell and Gwen's heart dropped. Shaking away the fear and disbelief she felt, she stood up alongside Leóne. He agreed with her about fighting and she met his eyes. Nodding back, she gripped her staff and the small crystal at the top starting glowing blue. She didn't want to use the power stored in her staff but was ready to if needed.

Watching as Leóne made target practice of the apprentice mages and militia, she heard Yo speak of letting everyone escape and have her stay behind. She turned back to disagree and saw Liam uncovering a sewer drain. The smell hit her nose and she held back a gag. "I am not going in there. I'd rather be dead than ruin my outfit. Do you know much these garments cost?" She scoffed, looking at the drain in disgust. Liam slithered into the drain and she gave Yo a quick smile. "Anyways, Yo, I'm fighting my way out of here or escaping on dry land. You can join us or Liam if you'd like." She said, turning back to the fight at hand.

Gwen used arcane magic and lifted spare bricks off the ground, sending them flying towards the guardsmen behind the front line. She looked at the master mage and knew she was too powerful to take on. "We don't stand a chance against her. We have to get to the Eastern gate." She said to Leóne as she conjured up a ball of fire and threw it at her opponents.
