    ~ The Underground ~
    Forrest of Sorrow

He looked to his beloved as the words were used like knives. He’d not known Luna to be so unhappy that she would choose to escape with strangers. Then again what other choice could be made? The church was on lockdown. His wards would only last so long. Each day came another chance for discord among the few untouched by whatever had been out there. Each day came more problems than the last, even Elizabeth was getting ready to leave so why shouldn't the young also be aching to go home?

He looked back at the group. He didn’t trust these two, not in the slightest. Even if they both seemed sincere in their own ways they were both idiots. He couldn’t trust them to not wind up just causing more problems, they’d already broken one ward. In reality, there was no going back. Once one person left the others would soon follow, trying to get free. The lockdown only worked so long as he had cooperative people all around.

Best he could aim for now was information concealment. He knew that it wouldn’t last long, but he had expected to do better by them. Instead he was here finding that one of his young apprentices had been so uncomfortable she’d rather run headfirst blind against who knows what enemies to leave. His son had been changed, two of his apprentices were both running from his only way to protect them, he’d let one’s unhappiness stew. He felt as though he was doing little right and so much more wrong despite his best of intentions.

“Eliza dear. I hate to ask this of you, but will you attempt to keep things quiet? The wards won’t keep anyone in once they know they have the option of breaking out from within. No one will be safe. The threat has to be addressed today. Either we fight back or wait to die.”

He had a deep frown on his face as he looked between Luna and Luca. His darling apprentices wouldn’t be safe if he tried to go this alone. Luna couldn’t escape fast enough, Luca would try to follow him. He let out a deep sigh of acceptance.

“You don’t understand. Once one ward is broken… it becomes known that they can be broken. The first domino in a line of the downfall of the safety net we’ve woven. So then. Please Luna reconsider. You could return and be safe? If you leave here it will be to a battle, they’re already surrounding us. If we could have left… That would have been my first option. I’ve lived long enough to know people are worth more than some things we call home. You can replace a building but one mistake you can never erase is a death.”

Hubyr
Hubyr.jpgHubyr turned his attention to the old woman, “Two weeks was long enough of a wait! We have things we needed to do and you had no right to hold us in.” He looked them up and down briefly, “Church or not.

At the fiery youngster, Hubyr turned a sharp gaze upon him. “There are better ways to convince people to join you rather than resorting to straight violence. Just fix your damn ward and let us go, dammit!

Hubyr was about to start walking off down the tunnel, but was stopped when Luna spoke up, placing blame on herself. He raised a brow at her, stopping his almost movement.

With Sigurd’s words, Hubyr almost said that Ayana was not his daughter, but due to the situation, it wasn’t time to put out a correction. When thinking on it, he never really clarified who Ayana was to him.

When the old woman softened up, it was… strange? She seemed like one of those elders back home, stubborn, set in their way, but she seemed easily convinced.

Could they trust it? Why couldn’t people be as easy to read as a beast. Dealing with beasts in the forest was a lot easier of a read.

A rumble echoed through the tunnel, along with the sound of a scraping and a splash.

Speaking of beasts.

Hubyr could recognize the grumblings of a beast no matter where they were, and that rumble didn’t sound like something that should reside in the ground. He had stopped paying attention if any more words were said as he focused his attention behind the church members, his eyes narrowing to get a better view.

A thud of heavy paw steps. A hot breeze blew through the tunnel, coming from behind the church members.

Rrrrrrrr…

Whatever was making that noise was fast approaching. And to those with decent sensory abilities, it was huge.

I may not trust you guys, but you may know more about the catacombs than I. What manner of beast resides down here and are we gonna fight, die, or a third option, run?” Hubyr flexed his muscles as his fists clenched. As a hunter, Hubyr was a fighter; however, he didn’t get to the rank he was by being reckless and going in without information. This was a new location, so if running ended up being the consensus until they figured out what strange beast could exist in catacombs, he would not argue.

As the dome lowered Lorrin could be seen clenching his fits, still frustrated from the events that have just occurred, he would only come back to his senses upon being waked in the head by Ayana. "Oww! that was not necessary." He rubs the back of his head and glances up at the two women seeing both of their wounds this was anything other than okay. "We need to get you two to a doctor soon I know that your more or less patched up but without a professional, it could still lead to some lasting effects if left alone." He would stand once again dusting himself off then draws an arrow "Ill keep a lookout with Ayana just focus on the stars there definitely our best way out at this point." Not a moment would pass as something would fall into the nearby water, must be another rock all the more reason to get out of here. Then a large thumb is there going to be another cave in? Something that would immediately be deconfirmed with Celestine saying it was Fraya, Lorrin would approach the body speechless as to what to say, she died and there was nothing he could of down to prevent it from happing, if only they were able to get out of here faster this would not have happened. If only he could have stoped .... that creature. The arrow was single handily snapped in his hand in a moment of silent anger. "I'll get her just keep working." He would approach Frayas body doing his best to pry the lifeless body from the rock it was not an easy task with how heavily a corps can be let along with Fraya's. Bring her off the rock and on too sold ground Lorrin would move her hair over her face as to not let it be seen no one should have to see this. "I will make sure it pays for what happened today." He says to himself silently.

Gwendolyn breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Ayana, Lorrin, and Obsidian mostly unharmed. She gave Ayana a small smile as she skipped out of the dome. The smile quickly faded as the elf noticed the wound on Gwen’s leg. Before she could protest, Ayana was already kneeling down to heal her. The ice stung for a moment and reduced the range of motion in her leg, but she was thankful. As the elf healed her, Calicus approached and she turned her head to face him. Ayana seemed to agree with the staircase and Gwen smiled a little, feeling relieved that they had a plan to escape. “Thank you.” She smiled before noticing the elf’s own injury; a deep gash in her forehead. She reached to heal the girl but heard a small splash in the nearby water. Scanning the dark surface, she couldn’t see much so she enlarged her lumen spell. The light enveloped the cavern and she witnessed a small creature with multiple legs crawl out onto the shore that sat across the lake. Furrowing her brows, she watched it scuttle into a dark tunnel and disappear. “That’s odd…” She whispered to herself as she walked to the edge of the shore to prepare the staircase. Shrugging it off, she looked at the hole in which they fell through in order to gauge how much energy and stone would be needed to build something that was stable.

As she studied the distance, a small axe fell through the air followed by a person. She recognized it was Freya and her face became painted with horror. Glancing between the mountain woman and the chilling water below, she prayed that she would land safely. The sounds of bones cracking filled the silent cavern as Freya made contact with a jagged rock and Gwen’s breath hitched in her throat. She held her breath as she watched the motionless body of Freya, hoping that the woman would move or at least make a sound. Gwen stood there for a moment, staring at her lifeless friend. “Fr-Freya?” She choked out in a whisper as tears welled up in her eyes. Falling to her knees, tears began streaming down her face as she tried to make sense of the fatality she just witnessed. She wanted to run to her and try to revive her. Try anything and everything she could possibly do to reverse this mistake but instead, she let out a pained cry followed by heart-wrenched sobs once she realized Death took the woman. The world collapsed around her as the built-up stress from falling into this void of destruction and the trauma of watching one of her first friends fall to their death hit her all at once. “W-What d-do we do?” She managed to choke out as she watched Freya’s blood soak the rock.

Lorrin came into her view and she watched as he picked Freya’s body up from the rock. Slightly nodding at the archer's instruction, Gwen wiped her face of tears. She slowly stood to her feet. As much as she wanted to mourn, they had to save the others from the Jester as fast as they could. Before another comrade joined Freya in death. Holding back tears, she began building the staircase. Rocks of various sizes stacked on top of each other, building upon what Celestine started. She worked in silence as the image of Freya landing on the rock replayed in her head.

Pozou complete.png
It had been too much. Pozou had practically been shutting out everything that was going around him, putting himself in a box and staying separate from the whole situation. It was a strange, out-of-body experience he was having. He could see the people around him, hear them, but it was as if he was experiencing it all behind a one-way mirror.

It was Tammond that brought the Quetzola through that mirror again, back to the moment. Pozou had looked to him with a wild and unbridled fear in his eyes when he clasped his hand on his shoulder, and almost backed away with that same fear. Though, his words, instructing him to close his eyes, focus on his breathing, made him a little more aware of himself. He noticed how jagged his breathing had become like he was sucking at the air through a thin straw, and he attempted to breathe in through his nose. He focused on his breathing, just like Tammond instructed him to.

It was rather ironic, him giving the doctor some orders like a patient. It was an unfortunate situation, but he technically was a patient here.

While Kadar and Daisy had taken up arms against the shadowy figure, it decided to yapper on once again but about help. Suddenly eyeless, black and purple creatures skidaddled in, surrounding him and the sisters, squealing at them. Pozou, not only feeling fear creeping in, but he felt woozy, certainly an effect of the blood loss…he tried not to think about it too much, to stress him out even further.

He let the others do their thing. Daisy had tried to pin the shadow to the ceiling above with earthy spikes, and Liam had been trying to pry the cell bars open, saying something to Jane he couldn’t quite catch. It wasn’t long though before Liam had jumped into the fray though, clearly buying some time for them all to escape. Or at least, the ones who weren’t going to stay and fight.

Rose was one of them. Though he once felt the tight security of her presence, his arm had been moved off her shoulder, with her instructions to Jane being to protect him. Before he knew it, amongst the chaos and Rose starting to fight off the monsters that had surrounded them, him and Jane were off. He could only helplessly look back at Rose as both him and Jane fled into the darkness.

Pozou, as they moved along, gripped onto Jane tightly – or what he thought was tightly, at least. The shock was still bouncing through his body, though, now the adrenaline was starting to wear off, and the further they went, the weaker he got. He had to keep himself awake, to keep pushing himself towards the light. Anything to stop thinking of the pain…

“Jane,” he said to her in the darkness, still walking along. “I know it’s maybe not a good time but…talk to me. About anything. I want to…stay awake…”

sayid-1.jpg

"Yeah yeah whatever" Kadar droned, snoring and crossing his arms when the monster boasted. Then he smirked and shook his head, almost laughing as the emotional group bonded during battle. How cute.

"There's a time and place for that noise!" He shouted, smile growing when demonic roaches swarmed through the tunnel and crashed the budding love-fest.

"The hell are those things?" Kadar mumbled, grinning when Rose booted a crawler and slashed its antenna. The screeching bug started wandering aimlessly without its feelers, clumsily stumbling into the room.

"Nice one! I'll clean it up!" He beamed, bisecting the creature with a casual spear thrust, grimacing when brackish blood poured from the severed halves. "Hmmm... well balanced lance" he winked, thanking the geomancer with a nod. Then he stared down the monstrous guard, rolling his shoulders before charging with his spear extended.

"I'm tired of your routine. It's time to shut you up for good!" He snapped, leaping over the spiked area while thrusting forward, aiming center mass for maximum damage — and he wasn't alone. The mixblood and geomancer were attacking too, rushing and pinning the demon respectively. The sheer volume was overwhelming, impossible to survive unless the monster was completely invincible. That seemed equally impossible though, so Kadar descended with confidence, spear squared against the monster's chest.

Gambler.JPGLiam had thrown a broken bar at the figure. It phased right through the guard. They snorted, “We can’t leave. We worked hard to open our door and we intend to keep it open. We like it over here!

They hopped up, standing on the ledge, seemingly distracted as their expression seemed to go far away again, which is when they got wrapped up by Liam, just as earth stabbed through their legs.

Well, Jane and Rose get to stay. We’ll help them stay later.” They didn’t bother struggling against the restraints of the snake body wrapped around them. They turned their attention to Rose, one of the sisters that had stuck around, “Don’t worry! Once the dust settles, you both will have fun lives, yes yes!

They slipped their fingers under a part of Liam and lifted up, attempting to bring the serpentine body to their chest, having seen where Kadar was then aiming.

You stab us, you stab Liam! Spear goes through us, it goes in elsewhere!

Luka grimaced when Luna teared up and started bawling, bringing out his smoother side when he chimed "Hey cryin' don't suit ya pretty face! We understand why you want to leave, but you won't last out there with them kidnappers on the street! You need to come back until we get help!"

His gentle expression soured as he stared down the hunter, pursing his mouth and crossing his arms. "No chance! Ya not going anywhere mate! Tallis makes the calls round here and he made things clearer than crystal, ya coming back with us and that's that, no matter your reason for leaving! And you... Sigun or Sigeen, whatever ya name is... this fire ball ain't an idle threat! Test me! Go on!"

Luka passed the ball between his hands, almost dropping it when a growling sound echoed through the tunnel. "Must be the one you're always talking to mate, think she's coming for lunch? No but seriously, anyone know what that is?" He nervously laughed as the sound intensified, shifting his weight as Hubyr asked about the catacombs.

"These the tombs shirtless, nothing lives down here that's dangerous! Must be a stray dog!" He was less convincing than a rookie conman, darting eyes and heaving his chest as the steady thump-thump-thump continued. The massive footfalls were speeding up too, turning into an ominous sprint that shook dust from the catacomb walls.

Luka scratched his forearm, furrowed his sweaty brow and chewed his cheek. "Those footsteps sound bigger than a dog's though..." He whispered, stepping back and glancing between the masters. They reassured him more than anyone else he knew, as master mages were the strongest warriors in the land. There was nothing they couldn't handle when the chips were down, but even so, his nerves screamed when the mysterious beast approached.

Each hit on the dome was felt as if it were bruising her. Was it pain bruising her skin? Her magic? Or just her heart? Obsidian could merely hold on and ignore the knowledge of what these boulders would do to soft flesh. And then it was quiet. Stepping back, Obsidian slowly withdrew her magic from the rock above, redirecting it to what was below. She could feel the cracks spread throughout the ground beneath, evidence of the boulders’ impact. She flinched at Lorrin’s outburst, knowing he was right. She should have done more to protect everyone.

At the knock, so gentle after the barrage before, Obsidian slowly dropped the shield, relief settling like a stone in her stomach. It was Gwen! She was alive! Obsidian wanted to cry. But then Ayana showed her failure. Gwendolyn had gotten hurt. Her leg likely hit before she could reach shelter in the tunnel. And Ayana herself! As she explained to Gwen about her makeshift bandage, the lumen spell caught the crystals of ice in her hair. Obsidian closed her eyes for a moment, trying to push the sour knot of failure down so she could keep going. Her voice was steady when she spoke, “I agree. Though everything is stable for now, we do not want to linger.”

At the suggestion of a staircase, she tilted her head, frowning in thought. “A ladder or something similar would likely be faster.” Lifting her head, she fanned her senses out, to catch the start of her pillar before she jumped. If they could connect to it, then that would be easiest. Her mind flickered through possibilities. Would two pillars, connected by rungs be the safest? Or could they make do with just hand and footholds on a single column? Freya likely brought the rope. With it, they could tie each other together.

Then something….something right?...dropped from above. At first, she thought, hoped that it was another boulder. One beyond her range, that she just hadn’t sensed. But with Gwen’s light, she could see the glint of what had to be an ax--her mind flashed back to that first night in the tavern, where Freya and Bjorn, and Leone and Gwendolyn tossed axes with her at the target. She remembered the elder woman’s skill. And the other thing, it….it looked like a body. It looked like Freya. And all Obsidian could do was watch as the mercenary fell. Watch the splash of her ax. Hear her body, which was so strong, crack, the drape immediately lifeless atop a jagged rock.

And all she could do was watch as Gwendolyn went forward, sobbing for her friend. And watch as Lorrin carefully removed her body, which no longer looked like her, laying her on the solid ground. There was a roaring in her ears like someone was screaming. Her breath kept catching in her throat, the shaking of her body refusing to let her lungs expand. She felt puffy and swollen, as if sick. And all she could do was watch.

Nezumi returned to her senses at the gentle strokes from Leone. She closed her eyes, inhaling the scent of leather and magic that surrounded Leone. As upset as she was--and however she was upset: hurt? Grieving? Angry? She was a rat, she was not meant to feel all these big emotions in her small body. But she could ignore them. She could focus on the here and now. Kuma was the one who worried about the past and the future. Nezumi’s role was for the present. She was presently without Kuma. They were in one of the side rooms, hiding from those she sensed coming.

Now, the important thing was to make sure they hadn’t lost their faces. If they had...Nezumi wasn’t sure this room, this dead-end, would be safe for her ride. And the others. She nodded to Leone, nuzzling his hand, before climbing down once more. Already she could hear the voices--what sounded more like a lecture than a threat from an older woman was prominent. But as she neared the door, it was the group’s magic that struck her. Its strength was impressive, reminding her of the sadist’s...did they have one of those powerful balls? It hadn’t occurred to Nezumi that the Darkness and the Inquisition were one. She wanted to cry again, knowing Kuma was in even greater danger.

She turned back to face the room. How could she warn the group? Damn, why couldn’t any of them talk? Her mind was cataloging facts from the conversation: the woman seemed to be part of the church, the strange elf was Ayana’s sire, etc. At the same time, she struggled to figure out how to speak. Looking at the packed earth beneath her feet, she decided to try. Using her front teeth, outside of her sealed lips so she did not need to taste it, she started with a letter. “A.” It was about the size of her, so hopefully possible to read. “B” came next, the curves a bit angled, but she hoped it would be enough. The “Y” was easy, it’s straight lines created by clear trenches. But the “S”s were the hardest. The first was too angular, appearing as a flipped “Z.” The second was a boxy once more, appearing more like a “5.” She frowned at her work. "ABYऽ5." Squeaking once purposefully--the cat should hear her--she returned to her work. The second word she was unsure of. This tactic was slow, how could she convey the danger? Evil? Lives? Death? She settled on here, starting the straight lines of the "H".

Oh look, it’s the face-eating things. The rats did not do their description justice. Korina made her way to her charges. “My ladies! Head back toward the exit.” Her staff was best at flinging the creatures back, though she was unsure if it actually harmed them for they just kept coming. Thankfully most seemed to stay on the ground, or only on their hind legs. Even the child was tall enough for their faces to be safe for the moment

The Darkness was angry, responding to the attack with violence of its own. As the ax seemed to pass harmlessly through them--similar to her own, excluding the full amputation--she wondered if she could use that as a basis to talk. The Tanaka knew some battles could end with words...though some of course were inflamed by them. Still, if it gave her charges a chance…

She watched Freya fall, a crack appearing in her persona, for she had protected her soul. But the Tanaka returned her focus on the Darkness. After the ax, she figured it must be invulnerable to mortal weapons. Could magic even do enough? She pulled away from her charges, her staff swinging to clear a path. Her pants bore the cuts of the creature’s claws and teeth but the salvia burned, as if eating through the blue. Once as distanced as she could be, she called out, “It is difficult to be without friends.” She allowed her loneliness to fill her, the loss of her pack. How much it seemed to manifest as physical pain without the comfort of touch. “Even with a place of your own,” here, her homesickness filled her, "It hurts to be alone. Have you been alone for long?" Her body was already freely shifting, in attempts to avoid the beasts, furthering her difference from the humans.

1592972290302.png Thanks to Daisy's attack Liam had no trouble getting ahold of the dark figure. As Liam wrapped around the shadowy figure, Jane's words and smiling expression echoed in the back of his mind causing his heart to beat faster. He promised himself he would stay alive and he would go back to her, along with keeping her safe. He didn't want her to worry like that again as he felt like his heart was going to stop when she gave him the sad and stern gaze. With this in mind he began to tighten around the shadowy figure, before he could fully pin the arms he was being used as a shield versus the man Liam was ignoring's attack. Thanks to his thick scales and tough lower three fourths of his body Liam wasn't worried about getting hit with a slashing or piercing weapon, but blunt damage would still leave bruises unfortunately, granted his natural armor could soak up a great deal of it.

Liam didn't have any weapons on himself as he had just recently woke up and didn't pick up his fanglike dagger on the way out. He proceeded to snatch up one of the bars he sent flying prior and swing wildly at it's head, but it's words about the sisters worried him. "Daisy! P-Please p-protect J-Jane!!!" He stuttered loudly, his worry apparent. He didn't want her to get hurt, and he didn't care what happened to Kadar, whom he still ignored, at least verbally.

In the meantime he began tightening his coils around the shadowy figure, holding it's arms down and causing small but noticeably increased pressure against it's diaphragm. He would hopefully be enough to hold the thing down. If not the side whose name he was still ignorant about, could help. If not for the barred opening he would have rolled out of there using the bar to propel himself, that way he could get them to guards or someone able to properly handle the thing.

The scuttering and hissing had obviously perturbed Aedzel much worse than it had Valentine, for she gave a shriek and bounded behind them, hiding. Valentine’s hand gripped harder on the hilt of their sword. They would defend the innocent people here as much as they were able to. They had the sword to do it and the resolve.

Well, sort of. They were quaking on the inside, but they wouldn’t let fear take them over.

“Just stay behind me, Aedzel,” Valentine ordered, preparing themselves for any sort of fight that might take place. If any of the creatures had decided to venture near them, they would swipe at them, scare them off…else they would have little choice and cut into them.

Though, they felt more threatened by the words of the strange Jester in front of them, talking about how insulted they were with all the weapons and lack of respect, and how others who wouldn’t let the figure help them would pay. That was enough to insinuate a threat. They knew the others had to be the people below them.

It had to be sooner than later that a fight would break out. Valentine could only do so much with trying to keep Aedzel reassured, and so when the fight escalated, there was also little they could do when Freya and the axe went falling down into the hole.

Something hit the water with a splash. Something else landed on a surface, and there was silence for a moment. They could hear sobbing below, though, not from Freya, and assumed the absolute worst.

“Damn you…”
Valentine looked to the creature, fear truly gripping at them, yet, they couldn’t move. They knew they couldn’t leave the others here, not in the situation that they were in. “How could you, you…you monster!”

Ayana slumped to the ground with a small thump, covering her mouth when Freya was carried from the sharp outcropping. Ayana wanted to rush forward and help too, but she was frozen and her nerves were numbed. Her ears rang and hands shook, praying this was a dream as she breathed deep and closed her eyes. Then she crawled to a stand and stumbled over scattered rocks, whispering "no" over and over again, quivering as she approached the bloody scene.

"Freya! Freya can you hear me!" Her voice cracked, tears streaming when she collapsed next to the corpse.

"Freya wake up.... please wake up... we need you... we need you Freya!" Ayana shook the woman's shoulder, breaking into a forced smile. "It'll be okay! You'll see! Gwen can do first aid and we'll get Pozou to help. Then you can show me your village like you promised... remember what you said about your village? You still have to show me how the northerners..." but she suddenly stopped, freezing when she noticed Freya's bleeding chest.

The devastating wound drove the point home. Freya was dead and nothing could save her.

Ayana heaved, curled forward and clutched the woman, holding her close and rocking back and forth. Then she unleashed a pained scream that echoed through the cavern, cutting through the room as tears streamed down her face. Between heaves she whispered an elven prayer, releasing the departed and leaning back as her heart pounded. "May we meet again brave one" she mumbled below her breath, closing the woman's eyes with her hand. With the same hand she brushed away tears and dipped quivering fingers in the woman's blood, marking her own chestplate with a red triangle. "We will avenge you, on the mother's name we will!"

Ayana brushed away another wave of tears, sniffling as she gradually stood. "We must go, the others need our help... everyone just... just keep building I'll watch the tunnel with Lorrin."

She would properly mourn when the enemy was dead, until then she'd focus on one thing and one thing only — destroying the demon. With that mindset she escaped her emotions, burying them deep below the surface, turning to stone as she watched the cave tunnel for monsters of the deep.

Amalia Winters

Sadly, this rescue wasn't turning out to be as easy as lowering a rope into a hole. As if the strange jester who had seemly appeared out of nowhere wasn't enough, the strange creatures scuttling about added onto the team's problems. Amalia had made sure to carefully pull up the rope, still staying vigilant as to not end up in the pit herself. She tried to set it down somewhere out of the way but wouldn't find herself too surprised had their enemies gotten a hold of it and sabotaged their plans. Their humanoid foe went on about being insulted by weaponry and forcing people to pay, but Amalia had learned from her training to ignore enemy words; they would use them to break your focus. Instead, she pulled out her sword and took swings at the insects? Rats? Snakes? She honestly couldn't tell from behind her visor along with how dark it was around them. With a reluctant sigh, she pulled off the headgear and tossed it to the side with the rope. Hopefully her teammates would be too focused with combat to see her face, and she would be able to slip it back on before anyone noticed.

As Helena did, Amalia also managed to scathe one of the beasts, wincing at the white "blood" that oozed out. Her battles were mostly against humans, but she had also fought quite a few beasts in her travels. Nothing she had seen before had this sort of life source. While continuing her fight, she turned to see Freya manage to lop off an arm of the jester. Horrifyingly, they didn't even show any indication of pain. Instead, they went on to pick up the severed limb and use it as a blunt weapon. Even an axe in the chest didn't seem to hurt them, and they pressed the blade deeper in as what Amalia could only assume was a taunt.

"Just what are you...?" the knight questioned. Notably, the blood of the creatures scuttling around was the same color. Perhaps they were one and the same? Perhaps this jester was the result of one of them reaching maturity?

While making her predictions, Amalia was fortunate enough to not be attacked, yet when she returned to reality she saw Freya being suspended in the air over the cliff. It shouldn't have come as a surprise to her after seeing their enemy shake off a lost limb and an axe through the chest, but her eyes widened as the jester pulled the Northern woman's hand axe out of their head and held her over the abyss. "Freya!" the knight called, rushing over in hopes of catching her, but sadly, she was too slow. She looked down into the valley to see the blonde's figure eventually disappear into the darkness. There was a thump, a scream, and then sobbing. Amalia could only assume the worst.

Had she been a younger soldier, her rage would have taken over. She would have tried to fight the jester just as her dearly departed companion had and would have most likely met the same end. Instead, she stepped back to be with the rest of the group, her eyes never leaving their foe. "Freya... said to run..." she addressed her companions. "Let's respect her last wishes..." Despite her words, she didn't retreat just yet. She planned on waiting for her companions to do so first and protect them if one of their foes attempted an attack of opportunity.

Celestine Oceania

To see these land dwellers mourn was unexpected. In normal circumstances, she assumed that they would have looted the corpse, perhaps even cooked up the woman's flesh and eaten it, but with the situation they were currently in, the princess thought their only focus would be survival. Yet, three of the six stepped away from their work in order to give the Northern woman some form of last rites. Lorrin laid down her body and covered her face, Gwen simply sobbed, while Ayana chanted what the syphid could only assume was a prayer of departure and swore to avenge her. Celestine turned to Obsidian, who looked as if she was, ironically, petrified by the shock. Even Calcius, who hadn't known Freya prior to today, looked to be in a state of mournful surprise.

Celestine found herself empathizing with the land dwellers. She had by no means been close or even friendly with the departed, but the loss of a loved one was something she could relate to. She had never thought she would see eye to eye with land dwellers or care about the death of one, but today, she had surprised herself. She had no answer for Gwen when the other asked what they should do, or rather, she didn't know how to say it. They would have to continue their stone staircase, lest they end up joining Freya in death. Instead of speaking, she just swallowed and stared on, not wanting to hurt the feelings of the land-dwelling woman, the feelings she had just discovered her kind had.

Ayana took point and guided the group back to her duties. The syphid continued to build the staircase up the best she could. She already wasn't proficient with earth magic, but her paced had slowed since before the mourning. She remembered the mention of a stone ladder from Obsidian.

"I don't think that will be very stable..." she said with a dejected tone. Then again, if the others preferred, she would be willing to give it a try.

nice.jpg Luna wiped her face, listening to Sigurd address the Masters and Luca. She was more homesick than upset at the lifestyle of the church. Venturing outside of the church sounded nice but it wasn’t like she could see the beauty of the aged town they currently resided in. Her ears perked at Master Elizabeth’s surprising words. She was letting them leave and the mage smiled slightly, her hope returning. In true Master Elizabeth style, she berated Luna for not speaking up about her unhappiness and she nodded her head, ashamed. She let out a quiet laugh when Luca spoke of her appearance and her tears fell faster. Although Luca was quite outspoken and stubborn, she had begun to see him as a brother during her stay at the church.

At Master Tallis’ words, she thought for a moment. Once they made it outside the church, Hubyr and Sigurd would go forward with their missions. That would leave Luna to find her own way home. Alone and blind. Her echolocation was a good way of seeing her surroundings but it only showed brief, standstill outlines of people and objects. She cursed herself for not thinking of a way to travel home but she never thought they would get this close to escaping. She needed to stay with the church even if it pained her to do so.

She opened her mouth to respond to Master Tallis but stopped when she felt a low rumble that reverberated through the earth. The rumbling turned into heavy footsteps in the pattern of a beasts. She needed to make a decision quickly and took a deep breath. Turning around to face her partners in crime, she gave them a soft smile. “Promise me you’ll both escape and find what you’re looking for. I wish you well.” She said before turning back to the church members. The continuous footsteps echoed through the tunnel, growing closer. She quietly whistled and saw where Luca was standing. Quickly walking towards him, she grabbed his arm. “I’m sorry.” She whispered before preparing herself for a battle with a mysterious beast.

Si deus me relinquit (If god has forsaken me) || Roland's CS File

He was stabbing at another of the creatures that had come for them. He was struggling but not as much as he could have been. His captivity in the desert made him all the more aware of every little sound, and his ears were already good in the first place. So of course when he heard Freya yell to run his ears twitched to her fight. Was she struggling? He got his answer when he heard her plummet. Followed by a thump he didn’t want to acknowledge.

How…. how far was that drop again?

His heart sank as he refused to even think about it. He heard another scuttle and stabbed into another creature. He could feel tears of fear start to gather up. Soon what was just fear became full blown sorrow. He heard the voices below mingle with Kuma’s attempt at appealing to the bastard that had trapped a quarter of their carvaan and just threw Freya to her death.

    He started to panic.

Nononono. You couldn’t-you don’t- It’s impossible to… One didn’t speak with them. You can’t appeal to the beast that cages you up. They’re dead-they’re all dead. You have to fight and die or do nothing and die. There’s no options. The underground... the deserts.

    It’s all the same.

    There’s no saviors coming.

His hands shook and his best efforts to control his tears and his breath were failing. Despite the fact that he knew how bad panic was to his ability to fight he couldn’t shake it. He couldn’t turn off his emotions like Mama did.

He feet wouldn’t move as his sobs continued and his breathing started to come in irregular gasps. His grip on the trident began to loosen and the scuttling of the creatures came closer. Soon one was trying to climb up his cloak.

You saved yourself or you died. You were weak and you alone lived or you were weak and you died.

    And he'd lived hadn't he?

Stop STOP IT. He wasn’t weak anymore.

He tore his cloak as he used one of his knives to stab it. He wouldn’t let Kuma die too. Not with as much blood there was. There was so much blood. No he wouldn’t, he would fight and die. He wouldn’t run again. He put his knife back in it’s sheath and got a steady grip of the trident in his hands.

Talking to the monsters only made you a target.

He turned to face the thing that threw Freya from the cliff. In the background he heard his name being called softly then as a shout.

    “Ro-ro don’t ROLAND”

He lunged forwards clutching the trident in his hands with a scream without sensible words.

    ~ Tombs ~
Take Me To Church || Sigurd's CS File

He wasn’t quite sure what made the elders lighten up on their stance, he would believe it to be good sense but he wasn’t positive. While the child did as wild children did and threatened more as he felt he wasn’t taken seriously. Even so he would bring his wrists and hands together in an opposing slide as a gesture for thanks for the protection their dead sent. At least that’s what he assumed it to be as he felt the rumble of the tunnel.

He wondered if all this trouble was due to his direct defiance of the rituals.

Apparently there was now a beast. Yet even as the other’s seemed to prepare or reason it away he knew what this was. The earth protected them and now she was owed her dues. He would stay and fight. He walked to Luna’s side to brush her shoulder in an attempt of reassurance.

“No we will stay and we will fight. What comes from earth must return. This is no stray dog. You said you were surrounded? For you to ward the Tombs you must be worried of something coming from the tombs. Though I may dress as need for a bodyguard I am first and foremost a teacher of Drauttir and it’s Mana.”

He took his weapon and let it trail to the ground as he send magic through it and the earth moved below it slushing like stirred mud ready to provide cover.

Master Elizabeth

Elizabeth nodded to her beloved. "Yes, we'll make sure no one else finds out about this," she agreed. Her goal here was mostly to cut out the troublemakers before they could influence anyone else. She stayed silent (for once) as Tallis went on to reason with the two though. He was the master at this church, so she would let him handle it how he best saw fit. If it was left to her though, she would have made claims that the threat on the outside got the three. It was a white lie, sure, but it would certainly cause the people to fear for their safety more and fall in line. When people were being unreasonable, unreasonable methods needed to be used.

The discussions stopped when a low rumble was heard through the catacombs. Suddenly, they were all seeing eye to eye. Luca tried his best to assuage any concerns the group had, though it seemed he was unable to even convince himself.

"From stories, one would assume necromancy..." the woman said, "although there's no scientific backing for that..." On top of that, she didn't think the walking dead would have such heavy footsteps. "I'm not from Stone's Throw, and when I come to visit, I don't often frequent the catacombs, but I assume something so large wouldn't normally be found in these constricting underground caverns... whatever it is, I believe someone brought it here..." She looked to Tallis. "I don't believe a ward can stop whatever this monstrosity is, love." She looked to the apprentice. "Perhaps we should send him back. In case we and these warriors cannot hold off this beast, he can evacuate the people inside." She took a hold of the white orb she carried, now especially wishing Tallis had brought his own.

Down the Tunnels - Scene Setting
Involved: Sarahspn Sarahspn Arcanist Arcanist Jet Jet

As the trio, Jane, Pozou, and Tammond moved through the tunnel, going the opposite direction that Amalgahsett had flown, away from the chaos that was the fight, water could be heard drip-dripping at a faster pace.

Some parts of the rock seemed to be streaming salt water at a steady pace, exiting walls at different locations among the walls, but all seemed to collect and stream in the same location. The scent of the salt water and damp earth permeating the air.

As they traversed the path, that water seemed to pick up with an ambient sound, though ruined by more hisses. Then a squeal when there was a splash.

Soon, the trio would come upon a fork in the path. The left side is where all of the water seemed to be forming as it collected into a path that would lead underwater. The right side was definitely not underground, but was steadily growing darker. If they took this path, it would eventually seem to curve.

At the fork, there was one of those same strange monsters seemingly trying to avoid the streams, shaking a leg that had gotten wet from the salt water before noticing the intruders.

It hissed. More hissing followed, coming from behind the trio. The cave lit up in an eerie, deep purple glow from ancient lichen growing on the walls, sticking between far-reaching roots.

Kiel.jpgLucien had dashed out of the cavern, going back the way he was dragged in, leaving Kiel in the cavern. Not too long after, Kiel would be able to sense a new presence, down where the darkness was growing, where the civilians were marching along.

A rumble, the sound of metal screeching as something dragged across it, followed by a low grumble of some beast. This one was not connected like the hive mind that attached Kiel to those “infected,” but that didn’t stop the familiarity that this creature held.

The dancer had felt relief upon seeing his friend had gotten away. This led his own consciousness to relax, allowing for whatever had invaded his body to once again gain control. The light-blue-haired man smiled in the direction of noise, starting to step towards it. His expression would contort to fear for a moment, and then change back to the regular cheerful demeanor. His pace as he moved forward somewhat staggered. He would take a few steps regularly before pausing, sometimes even taking a step back. He would then once again continue forward. It continued this way until he approached whatever beast was in the distance, and then he came to a full stop.

Upon entering the cavern enveloped in darkness, civilians were making room for what was crawling out of what seemed like a tear in the plane. Claws scraped the ground, reaching for the metal walls, sinking into whatever hold it could get. The head was reptilian, horns sprouting from the head. It’s maws were jagged edges with sharp teeth. Saliva dripped from it’s open maw, where purple lit up it’s insides. It’s eyes were like the bosses, but instead of being a bright white, it had the same purple as it’s mouth. What looked like deep black scales adorned its body.

Turning it’s massive head, they spotted Kiel. Shrugging its shoulders, it pulled its upper torso out of the tear as wings were being made visible.

For some reason, Kiel would know this creature to be a female… dragon? Though, dragons were only mythos and legends in current times and it was debated about their actual existence.

The dragon seemed to know her mission as she pulled the rest of herself out of the rift, just barely fitting in the large cavern, leaving room for someone to hop in where she came out of.

3906a6813ea77d56ef56fa26d17cfa79.jpgPointing a claw at Kiel, she rumbled.

With the same smile on his face, the dancer stepped forward towards the beast. There was a look of knowing in his eyes as well.

My friends are so stubborn!” he said to the dragon. “Won’t you please help me convince them?

She grabbed at Kiel, throwing him up onto the back of her head, where he could hold onto her horns. This was essentially her saying ‘yes.’ She wasn’t about to slow down, but they had a similar motivation.

Once set up on her back, she stretched her limbs out with a sigh rumbling her body, her limbs finally freed, her wings stretching as far as they could before settling. Kiel took a hold of the dragoness’s horns as she started moving forth.

She sauntered out of the cavern, taking up most of the space as she scraped up the stone walls of the tunnels, taking a direction opposite of Lucien and Amalgahsett. She wound around the maze that was the underground tunnels, soon finding another entrance to the lake that was just below the main church basement.

The hole was visible, and looked like it was just big enough. Her body shook with a laugh as she clung to the side of the wall and up through the hole, where she would soon pop out behind the church members that were harassing two elves and an armored man. There were more than just them that she smelled, to which she had taken in a deep breath, exhaling hot air that was felt by the members not hidden in a caddy cornered room.

That was when she started her low, deep rumbles, her saliva dripping down her jaws, splashing to the floor as she took a slow step after another, her footfalls causing the location to thud. Then, she picked up her speed as she quickly came up on the group, two Master mages, two church apprentices, a short ass elf and an armored man. While Kiel's friends weren't in sight yet, that didn't matter.

Friends! I’m sorry it has come to this, but you have all been too stubborn!” the light-blue-haired man said as he sat mounted just behind the drake’s head. “Please surrender and make this as painless as possible for yourselves!

Leone, Vaaltari, Stone, and Yo would easily be able to pick out Kiel's voice.

The demonic-looking dragon opened her maw, saliva dripping, not necessarily giving the group a chance to respond as she threw a dangerous, sharp paw in their direction.

    ~ The Tombs ~
    Danse Macabre

The tombs trembled and he knew immediately that whatever they’d been hiding from had only been biding its time. They’d let it get this bad. No something huge, something dangerous was approaching. He swung around expecting the worst.

    “How is it coming from…”

He didn’t have time to question further as a creature of child’s fables appeared before them. With it came some unknown human riding on its back speaking of surrender. Should he live to see tomorrow he’d see the cultist burned for bringing such a thing into existence. He had very little time to attempt to knock the group near him to the ground.

"There's no way... It can't be. Those are fairytales."

He could feel the claw scrape just above him as pain wracked his body from the glancing blow. He hissed from the blow but even then he was still lucky that it didn't cut any deeper. He nearly lost his body in the first blow. He rolled to the side and got to a wall as he melted the frozen water bridge with this magic refreezing it into projectiles aiming for the area behind the dragon’s head as well as the human among it. The tunnels were no place to fight as this creature had a pure advantage to size.

“ATTACK FROM THE ALCOVES! SEEK COVER!”

Drawing out a new arrow just in case. Lorrin could not help but stare at the hole above them just what could be going on up there, he knew that Freya had gone and gotten help before well we don't need to think about that. But if there are others up there fighting that thing then all the more reason to get there. "It doesn't matter how stable it is at this point I don't care if brakes the second we take our foot off of it. Just get it done. People's lives are in danger and if we don't do something soon then this hole will be full of bodies." Looking up he could not help but hope that those who are up there stay safe until they arrive and don't do anything stupid .... like we did. "Is there anything you guys can do to make it go faster? Time is unfortunately of the essence." Watching the area around Lorrin could not help but to feel helpless no strategy to make no card up his sleeve just the sheer mercy of both the world and time itself. The only thing he can think of is what he's going to do to that thing once he's up there ....... if he can get up there.

Jester.JPGFreya’s killer stared down the hole, putting their hand above their eyes as if they were looking far out, though holding onto their detached arm as well. They were laughing with glee, ignoring those behind them.

Helena and Ro had dispatched several of the eyeless critters. Those that lost their antennae seemed disoriented momentarily before suddenly being fine. They assembled into packs, as if they were telling each other specific information to better their survival. Their saliva was no longer harmless, but had turned acidic. Each drop to stone sizzled with the chemical reaction. A group went toward Valentine and Aedzel, another group went toward Kuma, and the remnants were trying to deal with Helena.

They’re attention was gained by the shout from Kuma. They twirled around to face the group, attached their hand to a part of their hat and pushed their split torso back together, as the movement had made them unstable.

We have no need for "friends." But We aren’t just us. We are also entertaining-” they tilted their head, thinking, “-the others of your party! We were playing cards and it was oh so fun. Kiel is also playing with our pet! Join us and we can make sure that loneliness you’re feeling goes away~

As they were turned away from Roland, they weren’t really prepared for the trident to the chest. Well, maybe they were prepared for it and didn’t seem to care.

The trident sliced through, the force of bones being cracked could be felt by the youngin’ that was doing the stabbing.

They grasped the base of the trident with their hand, “We think everyone could make amazing additions to the other side. We give one more chance… Mmmmmm, after this~

As they spoke, they swung their body around toward Amalia, who was nearby, the momentum going toward the hole if Roland was slow on the let go.
