APRIL

April had snuggled into bed with more peace of mind than she had left it in the prior morning. James, the masked guest at the ball, had successfully left her with thoughts of ease despite the tense situation the party had ended on. After all, when discovering inane truths of magic at midnight, one could not expect their full senses to be erect. Perhaps the guests would all see this matter in a more positive light, and recant their former insults. She would certainly enjoy seeing that one smug pony-tailed man eat his words.

However, the world of dreams would offer her no respite. Almost immediately after she closed her eyes, she found herself before a plain of wind, with tall stalks of grass and wildflowers tugging at the edge of her floral skirt. It was almost like the manor's lands in the midst of a storm, though there were no trees to curtain the rough rain and bursts of air that buffeted her now. There was nothing but grass and open sky, leaving her in an open space that terrified her with its freedom. An uncanny sensation washed over her, as she pushed her hair out of her eyes and fully gazed upon the natural plaza. Though it looked like an endless expanse, there was something constricting her at the same time. The feeling of harsh wind contained no temperature, as she felt neither heat nor chill from the environment around her. It just seemed fake and empty, like a manufactured world built to only slightly resemble reality.

All of a sudden, April felt chills run up her spine, and she picked up her feet and started to run. At first it seemed the wind would blow her backwards, and send her flying high into the sky, but it suddenly flowed to rush her onwards. Deciding not to stop and contemplate this shift in the air, she mindlessly continued forward, her chest pounding with the unfamiliar feeling of adrenaline pulsing through her.

An arrow silently flew through her ankle, halting the girl and sending a burst of pain through her leg. April turned around to see an unknown woman holding a bow, with her body wrapped in the garb of a Japanese priestess. Inhaling sharply, April took a step forward, indignant and frightened at the same time.

"Who are you? What do you want with me?!" she yelled, ringlets of orange and red flame starting to surround her. April could feel the beginnings of her power truly seeping out, like an itch that couldn't be scratched away. It burned at every pore in her skin, practically begging to be released...but still she held back, not wanting to reveal her monstrous form to a strange human.

The woman didn't respond, but simply smiled and aimed her bow at April again. Starting to feel panic, April lowered her control and brought up her arms, and they quickly began to turn into inflamed wings as a result. Fire swiftly began to pour out of her limbs, scorching the nearby grass and causing the wind to vibrate. Her wings couldn't protect her, however, as the arrow darted right between them and shot into her heart.

Opening her eyes, April shot up with the swiftness of a cork leaving a bottle. For a few minutes she just remained in a sitting position in bed, contemplating what her dream could possibly mean. Was the woman anyone important, or just a random figure conjured up by her irrational dream-state? Was her dream warning her that she would be in danger, whether in human or monster form? Either way, it was probably best not to take it too seriously. After all, the vision which had plagued her for weeks before hadn't come true at all. She had remained composed and mostly calm during the dance, except for her irritated reply to Mr. Smug...but even then, she had maintained her human embodiment and avoided all temptation to shoot fireballs at his eyes. So the validity of her reveries was definitely in question.

Looking to the window, she instantly realized that she had spent longer than usual in bed. The sun was well past it's rising point, and bright rays of light peeped out through the spaces in her flowery curtains. Standing up and folding her sheets, she promptly splashed water onto her face then headed to her closet, pulling on a dress and socks before exiting the room and heading downstairs for breakfast.

The inviting scents of fresh bacon and eggs drifted through the air, but April hesitated from entering the dining room as she heard Hazel's yell. Listening in from the door, she heard that Ellison had got himself in some trouble and they were to go looking for him. A cold claw of fear came over her heart, and she remembered her dream again. What if they all were in danger? Humans wouldn't hesitate to shoot their own kind if they thought them responsible for some crime, and from Hazel's tone it seemed that was the exact sort of predicament Ellison was in.

Quickly running to the door, April grabbed her shoes and swiftly slid them on before heading back, opening the door and hoping her entry wouldn't be too noticeable. She quickly spotted James and went to stand beside him, shooting him a smile while simultaneously forcing down the redness in her cheeks. "Well, this should be a colorful morning, to say the least."

James had been so lost in his thoughts he hadn't noticed all the conversations around him. He was trying to figure out what he was going to do. The woman had mentioned magic. Maybe he had super strength. It would make sense, but was that magic? He was having trouble wrapping his mind around the idea of what magic even was.
He looked up when he saw April sit next to him. He smiled, but it dropped once he remembered that he couldn't control his strength. He could touch her. He was terrified of hurting her. She was much smaller than him and he could easily-- No! He frowned to himself and looked over at April again when she talked to him.
"Yeah...Already has....I think."
