Within the Depths of a Dream
We Wretched Children of the Abyss
- 1st of Vol, 1308 A.B
Your Eternal Highness,
We keep finding them, in droves mind you. Cults gathered everywhere from the smallest of villages, the center of cities, even caves in the vast wilderness of Majula with reports having been received that they dwell within Elurra as well. Damn that accursed wench in Artorus! The dungeon is almost full, bursting at the seams more like which means we must begin execution, I’m certain that scholar of yours has found some possible way to keep the undead from returning.
In other news, proper criminals have been imprisoned alongside them, and because of their trial, we are unfortunately unable to dispose of them in a similar manner which means we need to the room should we keep our keep running orderly and efficiently.
Urbain guide thee,
Captain Yule Thine
Plot Information
The world I set before you goes by the name of Etaria. Created by the gods who reside in Solus, the heavenly realm, it was as perfect as a society teaming with various cultures and races could until The Betrayal. Sirris, Urbain the heavenly king's wife as well as the goddess of Matrimony and Fertility had conceived and born a child of mortal blood. Her godly children, Voluna of the moon and Inrus of the sun quickly cast her into the previously uninhabited fourth level of Artorus or more commonly known as the abyss to forever remained imprisoned before their father, Urbain, could come to know about the supposed betrayal. She was overcome with anger and grief, threatening to do something drastic until a mortal took an interest in her. He still worshiped her regardless of her current position. This calmed her greatly as Sirris thought it was only right not to portray herself as how most mortals saw her. And so she took hold of the man's soul, taking it into her possession. He was forced into a state of undeath, looking hollow of all life. A waking skeleton shroud in skin. But in return, power was given to him. A natural talent for the arcane arts that rivaled all known sorceries or divine miracles.
He was the first Child of the Abyss.
Soon spreading his joy, many others who were curious or in despair took up the ritual that had been created, giving their soul to the fallen goddess in return for guidance, power, and a place by her side. Yet as these Children and undead grew in number and spread, worry was infectious among the many royal courts. They were immortal and potentially powerful with no known way to rid of them permanently. And so all undead were cast to the very bottom of the social latter no heed for race or class before their hollowing and an issue for all found to be immediately arrested.
That as many years ago. Now it 1308 A.B (After Betrayal) and you are now rotting in a dungeon. Whether mortal or otherwise, you have been given a life sentence, others for all eternity. Yet unlike how grave the situation currently appears, whispers have been floating about. That some have been in contact with her royal highness, the queen of the abyss herself. Yes some claim she is in fact merciful, but those claims can hardly be truthful.
Soon the minutes turn to ours after your arrival, and despite the lack of physical activity, the mental exhaustion of the situation has soon caused you to be rather fatigued. Willingly or not, you soon drift off to sleep, it being your only escape from your cell it seems. Until something strange encompasses you. Awfully so. Despite how you try to ignore it, it tugs and pulls on every fiber of your being, forcing you to finally open your eyes. You would be greeted with the majestic sight of a grand hall fit for royalty. The walls and floor made of the purest, darkest obsidian as for the monstrous stained glass windows a pure white in contrast. A voice would then sound behind you. Firm and gentle all at the same time. "I'm happy to see that you have awoken." Surprised you turn and stand, a throne with a woman sitting upon it before you. She was leaned back and appeared to be middle aged, dark hair spilling off her shoulders as violet eyes examined you carefully. Meet the GMHey! After getting a really into tabletop and getting a little experience under my belt, I decided it was time to start a game with a little more direction and structure.
While I adore being a player, I haven’t done so all that often because actually being able to tell the story is an amazing feeling. Getting actual responses from people and seeing them enjoy what you’re walking them through is just something I can’t get out of a play-by-post roleplay, which is why this here thread exists!
I live in southern USA so that means the central time zone, so I apologize for anyone across the world unless you’re up for a late game you most likely won’t be able to join us. Classes for myself are from 8:55 AM to around 4:00 PM on weekdays with there being quite a bit of free time on weekends, at least for now. That means it is likely around those days or timeframe it will take place.
Who I'm Looking For
- Roleplayers: When it comes to actually playing, I strongly prefer the roleplaying and social aspect over mechanics and combat. Don’t get me wrong, fights will happen, but taking a nice bite into a plot is what I’m in this for. This means that I’m looking for players that aren’t afraid to actually get into character versus just wanting to “win.” That takes the fun out of it for me, the GM, when actually trying to tell a story.
- Active and Interested: Everyone is welcome to join as long as you are aware of what it entails. This means one night/day a week where you are able to sit at a computer for 3-6+ hours in a voice channel. Plans to come up every now and then and even as the DM I’ve had to cancel because of something last minute or end early because I wasn’t feeling well, but if you’re a busy person and canceling every single week after the first or second session, a full campaign might not be for you but one shots are out there! (One shot = a story that only lasts the one session.)
- No Experience Required: No matter if you’ve had 5 years experience or never have played a game before, feel free to join! I’m not the best when it comes to remembering mechanics and such, so someone familiar with the system might be nice to have, however that doesn’t mean I’m looking for a co-GM.
- Leniency: The rulebook is a nice guide and helping hand, but ultimately I am your rulebook. You must be okay with me generally doing as I wish no matter if it does/doesn’t benefit your character/the party or if it’s in any of the manuals or not.
- DMing Q&AWill we be using Roll20?
It depends upon what the party would like. I have done so in the past and it is useful, but time consuming and a bit finicky. I would be perfectly fine without.
Where will dice be rolled?
If we don’t end up using roll20, I can most likely get a discord bot for it. If not there are online dice rooms I can create.
I don’t have a mic/don’t want to speak, can I type?
Unless it is only short-term and you plan on being able to do so later, no.
Can we use homebrew race/classes/etc?
If I wanted to use homebrew, we would be playing 4.5e. In other words, no. What is there is normally untested and unbalanced.
My English isn’t very good, can I still play?
Of course! As long as you can be understood that is more than enough for me.
What type of setting are we in?
This is a custom setting I have created, high fantasy in genre, medieval time period.
How optimised should we make our characters?
I dislike class and ability abuse. I’ll lay that out there plain and simple. You can optimise as much as you would like, but if things start getting out of hand, there might be some toning down involved.
What happens when a player is absent?
Depends on how many. If just one is gone, let’s say they tag along and we fill the other person in. If there are only two people present, we can cancel or have a fun little intermission. Lot of variables here.
How likely is my character to die?
I’d say a decent amount, as there is always risk, but I won’t kill characters off just because they failed their death saves. That being said, all actions have consequences. If you don’t duck when the ranger says duck and they put an arrow into your face, not my fault, go make a new sheet.
Anything we should know about the setting when creating characters?
Yes, please visit this folder. Keep in mind this was all originally for a play-by-post RP so try to ignore anything that doesn't make too much sense.
- Character DescriptionMust fit within their alignment, background, race and so on. I don’t mind being creative (say a cheerful tiefling) but keep it within reason. Names must be legitimate and make sense, as does height, weight and so on unless there’s a reason otherwise. As for character age, they must be mentally and physically over the age of 21, however that pertains to your character’s race. This is to keep things simple and not have any odd situations.
Race and ClassAs mentioned before, creativity is lovely so don’t feel like you need to stick to archtypes. I would like to keep these all within official D&D playtested material so this means I wouldn’t like Unearthed Arcana content to be used.
All characters should be scaled to level 5.
Alignment and BackgroundBe careful when choosing an alignment as your actions can and will cause it to change mid-game. True Neutrals, Neutral Evil, Chaotic Neutral and Chaotic Evils are not allowed. I’d rather not get into that mess.
These are the definitions that are going to be use.
Examples of the alignments in the context of murder committed by a party member
- Lawful Good: If a party member murders someone in cold blood, they would have to bring them in for it or it would be against their nature to “let it slide.”
- Chaotic Good: They would’ve watched a party member murder someone in cold blood but think it is justifiable because the victim had just burned down an orphanage.
- Neutral Good: They wouldn’t turn the party member in unless the city guard inquired about it.
- True Neutral: Didn’t even witness the murder because they have no reason to be there.)
- Chaotic Neutral: They turned themselves in as the murderer of the victim.
- Lawful Evil: They turned the player that committed the murder in, posing as a relative of the victim to collect their inheritance.)
- Chaotic Evil: Actually burned down the orphanage and blamed the victim.
Neutral Evil: They actually convinced the player to murder the victim only so they could get out of being blamed while taking what they needed from the victim.
Any background is fine, as long as it isn’t custom and make sense for their story.
EquipmentNo starting equipment. This makes sense as all PCs are starting imprisoned.
Other- I would like all sheets to be stored on here as I really like the layout.
- Since I haven't made lore for each race in D&D, try to use their canon lore unless you have some issues there.
- If you are unsure how to create a character, please ask! I would be more than happy to walk you through it.
- Interested In Playing?Fill out this here form and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
