This air is blessed, you share with me

In the morning, Mariah could do nothing except buzz around the house happily. Could things be any better? She was about to hang out with other people. Cool people who weren't Tabitha! Though she treasured her friend dearly, she also knew that Tabby would be much happier prowling around the Celebration, than on a boat ride with people she barely knew. Of course it was a bit sad, that they'd be celebrating the end of the school year separately, but she tried not to dwell on it. She was sure Tabitha didn't care too much.

As of now, she was staring at her reflection with a frown on her face. She looked the same. Frizzy hair, dark circles on her eyelids, and a face that looked as if it were scowling if she wasn't grinning like an idiot 24/7. But it could be worse. She could have had an outbreak of zits or something equally horrendous. Ordinarily appearances weren't something she had the time to dissect as cruelly as she did, but given that it was summer she'd developed the tendency of staring in the mirror like a narcissist. Praying if she looked hard enough, maybe she'd see a girl she would enjoy being looking back.

With a sigh, she abandoned the bathroom. If she let herself go down that cycle of criticizing, she'd either not meet her friends at all or show up there a shrivelled husk that at least held some self worth beforehand. No, it was better to leave the house while she was just slightly bummed out about the way she looked. There was no need to delve into other aspects such as personality or overall loveability. With a triumphant grin, Riah pried her front door open. And out the girl went.

As she walked over to the waterside, her thoughts drifted to the new friend group she'd acclimated. Well maybe friends was too strong of a term. Even though she kept using it, they were probably acquaintances at best. But she desperately hoped that they could become friends. Max was a very kind activist, who shared initials with her. Lemon was one of the sweetest people she'd ever seen in town. Levi seemed like a barrel of laughs. And Jenelle was the smartest girl she'd ever had the privilege to work with in various extracurriculars.

A few minutes later, she reached the wharf. On any other day she would've taken note of the lively town event in all it's glory, but for now she had a mission. Find Lemon, Max, Levi, and/or Jenelle, and slowly grow from acquaintanceship to friendship. Hopefully, she wouldn't come as a total creep, but if she did then so be it. She was more than satisfied maintaining a position as the appendix of her friend group, so long as she had a friend group. She could live not being particularly wanted or useful as a friend. Wandering around, she perked up immediately at the sight of a familiar face. Nothing could stop her from being a clingy bitch now.

We accept the love we think we deserve.

To the Board of the Anchor Bay School District,
This letter is in regards to the recent decision to continue an increase of funding for 4 charter schools in the district. The continued privatization of public education not only robs funding and opportunities from the already underfunded public schools, but the lack of accountability that charter school are held to creates and environment that is harmful to...

Most students at Anchor Bay High didn't give a rat's ass what motions were being passed by the school board. Either it didn't cross their radar, or they simply had no reason to feel one way or the other about how decisions were being made in their communities. Hell, most of the adults didn't care.

But Max cared. Max cared a lot.
That was why he spent so many hours of his life typing out letter after letter to the school board, the mayor, the governor, the state representatives, the senate, the president...
Sure, not one of them had ever written him back, but they had to be reading his concerns, right? At least they'd think about it a little. Maybe.

I appreciate your time and concern.
If you would like to discuss this request further, please contact me at your earliest convenience at...

Closing the document, Max pushed his laptop away and slumped forward in his chair with an agonized groan. Having spent all morning gathering articles and references for his latest long-winded petition to the committee, he'd gotten to well past noon without having eaten breakfast or gotten dressed.
20 minutes later, he'd still only managed to do one of those things. He went to take a shower, which reminded him that he needed to water the plants, and after watering the plants he'd come across an overdue book that needed to go back to the library, but while he was making a note of it on his phone he got a message from Lemon, his friend: she was already down at the end-of-year party, wasn't she?

Oh.
That was today.
Suddenly feeling his heart drop into his stomach, Max scrambled through his room to find his shoes and rushed out of his room, only to immediately return for his bag and house keys before running back out twice as fast, stumbling down the front steps and taking off down the sidewalk.
All the other things he forgot on his way out... well, it was too late for that now. Breakfast wasn't that important, was it?

Max was lucky enough to live close to the waterfront, which he found himself grateful for as he slowed to a brisk walk down the linden tree lined streets onto the open wharves. Ever since moving here, Max had always thought this was one of the most beautiful places in the state. The quiet blue Nantucket Sound stretched out over the horizon, catching the afternoon sunlight and giving the open space an air of tranquility. Today, though, the serenity was broken up by the colors and smells and movements of a lively street fair; people lining the docks and shores with stalls and games and the like. Feeling he had no time to stop and take it in, Max hurried forward and started hunting through the crowd for a small cheerful blonde, a soft-eyed brunette, and a tall jock with the personality of a Golden Retriever. Trying his best not to bump into people on his way around, he began wondering in the back of his head if waiting for them at a designated spot would have been smarter. Most likely. But yet again, hindsight was 20/20 and he had little left to do but keep trying to track down his crew before Lemon lost her patience and started her ill advised deep-fried Oreo showdown without a judge.

Ivy Dawkins
Don't threaten me with a good time

Ivy's last year of middle school fizzled out to an underwhelming end, and finally she was released from her academic confines now starved for free time. The ensuing boredom was maddening. It was one thing to be told what to do for the whole school year... it was another entirely to be set free into a vast open world with too many nondescript possibilities. What, now she just had to manifest the motivation to enrich herself again!?
Assholes. Rotting the minds of the fragile youth.

After spending the first few days of summer vacation rolling around on the floor of her shared bedroom in melodramatic exhaustion, the annual end-of-year event caught her attention and she
This was actually Ivy's first summer in Anchor Bay. Late last year, she'd been unceremoniously shipped off to Massachusetts from D.C through the foster system, but in all fairness she didn't mind the move at all. Ivy, after all, had no attachments to Washington anymore. And Anchor Bay, in her experience, had been a way to find out how to enjoy life on pure spite alone. So what if her parents got tired of being parents? Fuck them; this was better. And even if it wasn't actually better, she'd make it better because fuck them and fuck you and fuck everything.

Ivy's approach to optimism was a little strange, to put it lightly.

Sitting on the curb of the sidewalk facing off towards the bright blue ocean, Ivy kicked at the dust in the road and watched the crowd of freed students and townsfolk scurrying around. It was cute, Ivy thought: like watching noisy colorful flocks of tropical birds at the zoo.
Ice cubes rattled against the inside of her glittery rainbow plastic water bottle as she unscrewed the top for another sip out of it. The way her nose wrinkled and her eyes squeezed shut for a few moments afterward was enough evidence that she had more in there than just pink lemonade. What? It was a Saturday, and school was out anyway. Absolutely no foreseeable consequences, she thought. None at all.

Waiting for the mixture of fruit juice and cheap alcohol to work its magic, Ivy got up from the sidewalk and sidled off to go find a snack from one of the booths. But halfway there, standing a little way's up on the grass, Ivy caught sight of something far better.
She'd make a joke about the word 'snack' if she was into Ashley, which she definitely wasn't at all.

"What happened, Ashley?" Ivy started with neither a greeting nor a warning, abruptly side-stepping next to Ashley in the hopes of startling the soon-to-be high school freshman. "I heard you had a rough time on finals. You know, it's really sad they don't accept your kind of 'extra credit.'" She mixed up her mock-sympathetic expression with a cocky lift of her eyebrow. "Unless you're saving it for Justin or Turtle Boy. At that point, I'd just invest..."

Lemon Pierce

Today was the day, the real start of summer! Lemon was more than a little excited about going to the end of the year festival. She had struggled all throughout her sophomore year, avoiding friends, parties, and really anything that was outside of the house. Had it strained her relationships with her friends? Probably. However, Lemon was finally beginning to feel like everything was going well, things were finally going back to normal and she was finally feeling more like herself. Sure, it took almost a whole year, but it was fine. She had looked herself over in the mirror a few times, making sure her hair didn’t look a mess, but she was excited to see Max, Levi, Mariah, and Jenelle. It would be a fun time and really, she needed to become closer with the girls. Max and Levi were great, but she needed to branch out from her guy friends, after all they wouldn’t want to go shopping with her. Though she did get Max to do a face mask with her once, which had been super fun.

She decided walking was easier, it was beautiful outside and the fresh air would be nice to have. She said goodbye to her parents, and they were shocked she actually wanted to leave the house and watched as their daughter happily walked out the front door in what seemed like forever. It didn’t take long for Lemon to make it down by the water and all that she had to do was look for her friends. Acquaintances? No. Friends. They were friends, plus she had to mentally prepare to destroy Levi in and Oreo eating contest. But that was later.

As her eyes looked around at everyone happily chattering away, she couldn’t help but feel a bit boxed in by the bodies. She really hadn’t been around big crowds in so long it made her feel stressed, but she knew it would be fine. It was healthy for her; it was good for her even if she didn’t really believe it. Leaving and spending time with others would make her parents happy and maybe it would make her feel normal. It was in those moments of stress that Lemon eyed both Max and Mariah and she yelled for Mariah while running up to Max. “Mariah!! Over here!” she quickly ran to Max and grabbed his hand pulling him towards her, “Max!”she signed happily, “How are you? Are you excited? Mariah is right over there; she should be here quickly.” Lemon had really been working on being more fluent in sign for Max and for the most part even in the year of not seeing him, she was still pretty fluent. She could tell her signs were a little sloppy, but she was nervous that he would be mad at her.

Lemon knew she had avoided him all year and, that probably wasn’t the smartest decision, but she was trying now, and she hoped that she could make up for it. She really wanted to make up for it. To apologize, to tell him everything but she couldn’t tell him. She couldn’t explain what happened. He wouldn’t understand, no one could. For Lemon this was her burden to carry and as much as it hurt her to not tell her friend, she was going to have to be quiet about her issues…her mistake.

TL;DR The gremlins discuss the possibility of Ashley hoe-ing it out
tl;dr
Ashley Park
Nobody wants you when you have no heart

Ashley's final middle school year was.......formative to say the least. The taunting and bullying had just stopped, and summer no longer felt like her only safe time. Granted she still felt like a caged bird set free, and all but still. Now summer was just.........an empty canvas. She could legiterally do whatever she wanted with minimal sneaking around. And sneak around she did.

Ashley didn't normally think of herself as a party girl. She really wasn't. But lately she'd found herself going regularly. They were a way out of the house.
She didn't know how she could handle just staying at home. The solitude drove her insane, and when her dad was there it was just plain awkward silence. Just him not even bothering to do more than give pizza money to the girl who wrecked his life. No conversation, no bed, no scolding when she came home late. So why should she stay at home? Because fuck. He didn't want his daughter? We’ll maybe his daughter didn’t want him either. In fact there was only one thing that he’d actually done for her that he didn’t have to.

Taught her that people don’t have some predisposition to love. If her own father could barely muster that up, then she’d be a fool to expect it of someone else.

Wandering around the party, she began to scan the snack booths. She didn’t normally permit herself to eat whatever, but it was summer so it’s not like there was any sport to keep in shape for. But she couldn’t pick. The caramel apples? The fried Oreos? She shook her head, and resolved to not eat just yet. She had bigger priorities. Namely, face paint.

Though she'd talked about having a middle finger drawn on her face, she'd ended up selecting pink flowers to be painted on her cheeks like a basic bitch. But whatever. She could always draw it on with a sharpie afterwards. Now, she was all pretty and dolled up to go to the food stands. But as she wandered, she let out a squeak of surprise as somebody abruptly called her name from very close proximity.

"Ivy, what are you doing here? I didn't call your name out three times in front of a mirror!" Ashley teased, quickly regaining composure "Sadly yes. I mean obviously I passed, but I don't know. I feel like the teachers didn't let me do all I could to bring my grades up.'" She sighed dramatically, placing a hand over her forehead to imitate unwellness "Hmmmm let me think. One's taken, and the other's a cult leader. We can't be intermixing with other cults so that's a hard no." She informed Ivy, with a grin on her face.

TL;DR Oreo. Eating. Competition.

levi morgan
i look a little bit older, i look a little bit colder
Levi had, honestly, kind of forgotten about the end-of-year party. He'd wanted to go when he heard about it, of course, and the entire football team had been talking about it for weeks. But every day, it was like he got home and he couldn't think about anything except, well, his mother. And then that made him think about his regrets - like how he regretted not coming out to her before she'd died. At the time, it had seemed such a small thing. So unimportant when you thought about the big picture. And he'd not been one hundred percent sure that he was gay, since he hadn't really had much time to think about it. Now it felt like a secret that he'd kept, even if he knew it wasn't intentional.

So he'd not technically planned on going to the party, but he wouldn't have been surprised if one of the guys dragged him there. He was home when Lemon texted him about joining her, Max and Mariah. He would have said 'yes' no matter what, because he really liked all three of them, but the offer of an Oreo Eating Competition was what had really tempted him. Getting ready had taken a total of two minutes. Put on clothes, put on shoes, glance at self in mirror. Finished.

He grabbed his dad's car keys from the hook by the front door and wandered to his dad's office, poking his head through the open door. His father sat at his desk, predictably, chin resting in his palm as he looked at something probably law-related on his computer.

"Dad?"

His eyes drifted up and his eyebrows raised, so Levi took that as invitation to continue.

"I'm going to the party, down at the waterfront. The fair thing."

His father seemed, well, not surprised. He never seemed much of anything these days. "Alright. Home by twelve, remember?"

"Yeah, 'course. Can I take your car?" A nod was all he needed - and received - before he was out the door.

The drive wasn't long, but parking was a bit of a nightmare. In the end, he wasn't sure if he'd parked legally or not, but he just kind of hoped it didn't matter. He shoved his hands into his jacket pockets as he wandered into the fair, taking in the sights of the lights and the decorations. He had to admit, Anchor Bay did events like nowhere else on Earth.

One perk of being tall was that it was very easy to spot anyone he needed to, so long as he recognised the top of their heads. He walked through the crowds, scanning for Lemon, Max, Mariah, or a combination of the three. Eventually, he spotted familiar blonde locks, along with the short stature of one Max Berkowitz. He grinned as he walked over from behind both of them, slinging his arm around Lemon once he was close enough. "Ready to lose?" He asked his friend, pulling her in close in a teasing manner. He looked to Max and waved, yet still said "Hi, Max," just out of habit. Levi really didn't know sign language, but he tried his best to still communicate with Max.

Don't threaten me with a good time

"Surprise, bitch. I'm like a daywalker vampire. I can be wherever I want." Ivy grinned devilishly, lowered her head, and stared at Ashley from under her brow like she thought this were being directed by Stanley Kubrick. As much as she and Ashley weren't good friends, Ivy had to admit that Ashley was probably her least boring classmate. One might say that by extension Ashley was also the most interesting, but Ivy preferred 'least boring.' It was less complimentary that way. She wasn't here in Anchor Bay to butter people up and give platitudes, after all.

"Why would I want to be stuck in your bathroom, anyway? Everyone here knows you shower with dish detergent like some kind of post-apocalyptic bunker person." As she paused to let the last comment sink in, though it was far too confusing to be remotely insulting, she chose to jump over Ashley's first response straight to what she'd said about their two mutual acquaintances.

"What, you don't think it would be just titillating to stand at the ocean's edge and summon hard-shelled sea lizards from their watery graves? And excuse you, it's not a cult, it's a new religious movement, so why don't you...wait, what!?" Her eyes widened as she came to an abrupt stop and threw her hands out suddenly, taking a deliberate step back. "Whoa, whoa, whoa." Despite her attempts to appear shocked, she had started to crack up. “Dustbin is as taken as whatever meds you’re supposed to be on right now.”

Looking a little bit too proud of herself for her latest strange joke, she pulled another sip from her rainbow bottle of crime juice, which she then offered over to Ashley. "C'mon, do it." She pressured encouragingly. After all, she was just trying to be supportive. "Cheers to un-remembering last year."

...her tone did not make it clear whether or not she actually, seriously just forgot the word forget.

''Lemon! There you are, I was looking everywhere for-oh you're not Lemon!'' Mariah squeaked, as a random tiny blonde lady glared daggers at her. Shit, she was an idiot. ''I'm sorry Miss! I'll just.........disappear forever.'' She mumbled, awkwardly tiptoeing away from the scene of her crime.

Back at the task of scanning the scene, she was resolute to not greet people so familiarly next time. This time her luck was better, given she spotted all three of them standing together. Creeping over, she lightly tapped on Levi's shoulder. ''Hey stranger.'' She grinned, wanting to make a more friendly gesture, but unsure if it was even remotely appropriate.

Moving onto Lemon, her eyes gathered a playful glint. ''Just so ya know? I'm rooting for you to win.'' She informed her friend cheerfully, while shamelessly sticking her tongue out at Levi. ''Sorry dude, but we all gotta pick sides right?'' She nudged Max's shoulder with her own. ''Who are you rooting for regarding the fried oreo contest?'' she signed.

Apparently only having two friends in your whole life, didn't mean you lacked the ability to socialize. Sure, she was always capable of messing shit up, but for now things seemed to be going pretty well. She hadn't accidentally insulted or made an innuendo or something like that.

''So what do you guys wanna do first?'' She questioned, desperate to go with the flow. She had no fucking clue what was cool for teens to do at an event like this, so she was kinda desperate for group input. Cause she sure as hell didn't wanna be making any choices for the group whatsoever.

TL;DR Picking up Oliver
tl;dr
Jacob Morass
when you are kind to others, it not only changes you, but the world.
The first weekend after the end of the school year was always something that Jacob looked forward to. Besides the lack of homework, and no longer having to listen to teachers drone on and on about something that he could care less about. Jacob was looking forward to the summer celebration. The entire town gathered by the docks, most of the small shops took to the wharf to sell right out on the ocean. Anchor Bay did a lot of events similar to this one, however this was one of his favorites. He loved the warm weather, while the winter festival was too cold for his liking. It also happened to have many more tourists.

Summer celebration was more about the townsfolk than it was about bringing in tourism. It was a way to bring together everyone, teachers, students, kids, parents, together to celebrate the start of the next three months. To bring in the warmth and sunshine, before everyone went their own path. Whether seniors moved on to college, or families took their vacations. It was a chance for everyone to be together once more.

It had been a few days since Jacob had last seen Oli, but that was about to change thankfully, as him and his mom had just gotten in the car to go pick him up. Jacob had thought that Oliver was at the library, but this kid just couldn’t stop walking. Once Jacob explained that he needed to stay in one spot so they could find him, he finally did.

Jacob’s mom, Miranda, drove their blue Mazda civic down the winding streets of Anchor Bay. Jacob rolled his window down crossing his arms on the window’s threshold, resting his chin upon them as the wind blew his hair around. Squinting his light eyes as the sun hit him in the face. He loved the smell of the warm salt air, swirling around him through his open window.
It wasn’t long before he spotted Oliver as it was, “Mom! There he is!” Jacob called out to his friend who was standing awkwardly on the sidewalk in front of a dark blue house. The grounds were obviously overgrown, like no one had bothered to take care of them.

As Kathy’s car pulled over to the sidewalk and slowed to a stop, Jacob practically jumped out of the car. “Hi Oli! I’m so glad you can come.” Jacob smiled as he stuffed his hands into the front pockets of his shorts.

Jacob looked back up at the house in front of him, “You’re right, the windows are slanted.” He nodded before turning back to the car his mom was in. “Did you want to sit in the front?” He gestured towards the passenger’s side door. “Or we could both sit in the back.” Jacob shrugged.

Astraea Dupante
there are so many beautiful reasons to be happy....

Astraea was running around her little apartment that she shared with Artemis, they had both made a plan that they were going to leave at 11 to get to the docks, but of course it was 10:55 and Astraea had just woken up. She was tripping across misplaced shoes and water bottles that they had failed to pick up as she fell into the bathroom.

Quickly Astraea feverishly brushed her teeth, staring at her unkempt hair in the mirror. She did not have any time to fix the mess that sat on top of her head. It almost looked like a bird had nested in her hair overnight. “Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!” She yelled as she ran past Artemis who was sitting peacefully on the couch with a book in his hand. He did not seem to be the least bit bothered by Astraea’s lateness. Maybe it was just because he was used to it at this point.

She ran back into her room, scrambling over her bed to get to her closet. She ripped out the first sundress she could find, throwing it over her head, before yanking off her pajama bottoms and pulling her tee-shirt out from underneath the spaghetti straps.

Patting down the dress in the full length mirror in her room, Astraea had realized that she still had her toothbrush in her mouth and had never finished brushing her teeth.

Leaping back across her bed, Astraea made a beeline back for the bathroom.

Quickly, she finished brushing her teeth, pulling the hair tie from the bun she had left in overnight. She ran her fingers through the tangled mess of golden blonde hair. Catching every other strand as she pulled at her own hair.

Groaning as she gave up, throwing the tangled mess back up into a slightly less messy bun. Astraea splashed cold water on her face, before she put on some mascara and lip gloss.

“There!” She smiled emerging from the bathroom. “I’m ready.” She swung out her arms like a bird ready to take flight. Astraea… Well in one to many words, still looked like she had just rolled out of bed. But that was the college student style wasn’t it?

She plopped herself down on the couch next to Artemis. “Soooo whatcha doinnnnggggg Artieeee.”

TL;DR It's just a good fun day with friends
tl;dr
Oliver Dreyfuss
How lonely it is, to be drowning in a place where everyone can swim

Oliver stared up at the blue house a few roads down from the library, taking in the asymmetric angles and chipping cobalt blue paint with an almost worried look.

There were so many things wrong with this house. It was concerning, Oliver thought. It was like one of those spot-the-difference puzzles they give bored kids at the dentist's office. The slats of the picket fence were unevenly spaced and lopsided, the door was painted a very unattractive yellow-green which didn't at all match the blue, and worst of all was the windows. The windows looked like they'd been slapped carelessly into the walls like stickers. Absolutely horrifying design.

It usually took Oliver a few minutes just to walk past this house, because of the amount of time he spent unable to stop staring at its offensive design. He tried to avoid it, but looping up and down the side streets was too disorienting and he had eventually decided to just brave the awful sight.

Today, though, he hadn't stopped just to ponder the obscenities of the blue house.
Really, he should've stayed at the library like he was supposed to. Winnie and Jacob were going to explore the end-of-year party at the beachfront district, and Jacob had offered to give Oliver a ride from the library. Oliver would've stayed there if it wasn't for the fact that the librarian was the same one who called the police on him when he tried to hide in the library for three days, back when… that was a long story. It was better just to sneak out and wait somewhere else.

At least the fair should be fun: Oliver was nervous around crowds at the best of times, but Jacob and Winnie were masters of navigating brutal conditions. After all, he and Jacob had survived middle school together, and Winnie was now 2 years deep into high school (which, depending upon who you asked, was somehow worse.) Together, the three of them could handle a busy street party.

Besides, Oliver loved the ocean. Sure, it was a festering hive of crabs and lobsters, but nowhere on earth was free from arthropods. Even the barren Antarctic and the insides of volcanoes were riddled with bugs. The ocean was also home to kinder creatures. Roughly 6.5 million individual sea turtles still swam the seas, of the 7 remaining species. But before now, there were millions more, of families and genera that no longer exist, for sea turtles predate the Cretaceous period, and--

“Mom! There he is!”
Oliver was snapped out of his tarrying sea turtle thoughts by Jacob's voice calling out to him from the steely blue car that had just slowed to a stop. Though Oliver first flinched and turned around as if he'd been caught in the middle of a crime, he slowly softened and gave an awkward but friendly smile. Before he could sort out his words enough to say hello, Jacob was out of the car, standing briefly by his side to take in the abominable house.

"Slanted." Oliver nodded, seeming to struggle with the word, lisping slightly over the s and falling quiet. Jacob kindly paid no mind and offered the passenger seat, but Oliver silently expressed he'd rather sit in the back with Jacob. It felt more symmetrical, oddly.

By the time they crew got down to the beach a few minutes later, the festival seemed to be in high spirits. Oliver carefully unbuckled his seat belt and followed Jacob out of the car, taking in the salty air and trying to adjust as quickly as possible to the noisy, rapidly moving crowd. He stopped pulling at his collar to quietly fish through his pocket for the tiny turtle statue Jacob gave him years ago, running his thumb silently over the plaster shell.

It was a good day. Nothing was going to go wrong.

Nobody wants you when you have no heart

"Like Twilight? Is that why your personality seems to be sparkling through today?" Ashley smirked, unfazed by Ivy's spooky theatrics. In fact, Ashley had yet to view that movie, but she did know that the vampires sparkled. Lately, she'd been considering watching it given it seemed so absurd that she and Ivy might've come up with it while high. It was almost refreshing to have someone to bounce off of constantly. Dustin typically called her a weirdo or heathen, and Oliver would take it far too literally. With Ivy she felt.....normal in a sense.

"Sweetie you're missing one key detail here. This is the apocalypse." She fired back, though Ivy had moved on to another topic much to her dismay.

"You heard me right! Mrs Dustin Lee has found himself a main bitch." Ashley informed her friend, with an amused grin on her face. Though on the inside, she felt extremely bothered that Dustin was with someone else, she decided that trivializing and joking about it was the best way to deflect. "Bagged an older chick. Winona Matthews, soon to be Junior. Apparently they met in some lame poetry class." She cackled. Love and poetry were two of the most pretentious and useless things in this world. So of course one could be found while looking for the other. “And excuse me bitch? Are you seriously accusing me of not popping pills? Do you even know me?”

As soon as Ivy offered the tumbler to her, she grinned wickedly. "Fruit juice and alcohol?" Her expression briefly turned into a frown. ''I don't know.........I was told to say no if someone offered me fruit juice.'' She snarked, before cracking it open to take a swig. "To un-remembering!"

TL;DR Hot girl summer means casual day-drinking.

Don't threaten me with a good time

Ivy triumphantly returned Ashley's toast: "To un-remembering!!" She took another swig and let out a harsh cough. "...And re-remembering what the fuck you just said." In classic Ivy fashion, the rapid back-and-forth had abruptly hit a wall as soon as she'd washed the thoughts back with another drink.

"Right. Winonaaaa." Ivy tapped the side of her head as if she remembered, but then her mouth dropped open and her eyes went blank."...No idea who that is. Poetry chick, huh? Didn't know rhyming pick-up lines still worked. What, was she just writing him sensual limericks on gum wrappers until he gave it up?" She shook her head, clumsily patting Ashley's shoulder. Evidently, the corner store vodka had started to kick in. "Sucks, man. Now who've you got? Turtle Terry, and Jason the Photo Kid, and that other guy, and fuckin uh… the lunch ladies? Pitiful selection here. Pitiful."

In truth, Ivy caught herself thinking about these sorts of things more often than she'd like to let on, but Ashley was the real hoe here, so she felt no remorse in making a few pokes at the expense of her latest romantic pursuits. "I can't believe Duncan's a poetry kid now." She gagged, pantomiming a violent heart attack. "You know why the poetry kids are all hoes? Have you read poems? They idolize the craziest sluts in history. They're out there trying to be Lord Byron." She took a deep breath before continuing, "It's too late, Ashley. Soon he's going to be running off with prostitutes and drinking wine out of a skull."

After that she simply chuckled under her breath and said nothing else, swaying slightly on the tips of her toes and twirling her bottle by its lanyard. Ashley's boy woes were infinitely amusing, but to Ivy it begged the question of why she even bothered with boys. All the boys their age were either fickle strumpets like Dustin, anxious zealots like Oliver, or gay as daisies like Jacob. And that was all 3 boys Ivy knew from around town. The others couldn't be any different. Ashley was just a lost cause by this point. Why she didn't spend her time somewhere more fruitful, Ivy didn't know, though she realized how hypocritical this was. She herself spent her time making purposely inflammatory tweets, and engaging in playful substance abuse. She also enjoyed music and other more noble activities, but the majority of her time was spent in mildly self-destructive hedonism. Ashley was much the same, minus her obsession with romantic cynicism. That was likely why they had managed to get through 8th grade without murdering each other… yet.

Carson Hughes

Some days were worse than others, some easier but the end of the school year festival was always one of the worst days for Carson. Teens coming in and out of the coffeeshop asking for the most ridiculous coffee concoctions they could dream up and she had to make each and every one with a smile on her face. Sure, she had worked herself up in the ranks to be an assistant manager, not to be confused with an assistant to the manager. In any case she was watching the clock, ready to leave her shift. Though that meant she was going to be dragged around the festival by Astraea who would probably have Artemis in tow. That girl was something special and Carson really couldn’t say no to her even if she tried. Her big doe eyes always pulled her in to say yes, so she was going to the fest and she would at least try to enjoy herself.

She had roped in the new lifeguard Hassim, so that would also help keep her occupied. Though he didn’t seem to realize that she was trying to flirt with him. Flirting with him was like flirting with a rock, nothing actually registered but at least he was nice. It was hard figuring out who was worth her time and who wanted to actually be a part of her life, but then again, she had gone this long on her own so it didn’t actually matter. Plus, with Ms. Mildred she really didn’t have a lot of free time. From working at the shop, to running all the errands for the nicest landlady Carson really couldn’t make the time to be a support system for another.

As soon as her time came to clock out Carson was gone. Coffees in hand and down to the water. It was nice that the town was small and that her job was literally right next to where everything was being held. Now all she had to do was wait for everyone. Granted she wasn’t going to be shocked if Astraea was late. That girl ran on a whole different time, but Carson found it cute, plus she really didn’t want to be at the fest. The longer Astra took the shorter amount of time dealing with the town and its weird little festivals and celebrations. Afterall there was never really anything worth celebrating it was always just a lie or a coverup. This was no different in the eyes of Carson.

Chuckling, Ashley returned the tumbler for Ivy's turn at drinking. With a teeny tiny wince at Ivy's cough, she resumed their cpnversation. "Doesn't matter. Now gimme." She grabbed it back from her, taking another swig, and held it behind her back with a playful smirk.

Ashley rolled her eyes as the topic circled back to Dustnona. She'd thought it a mere throwaway comment, but if Ivy wanted to be a crackhead about that, she wouldn't stop her. With one hand on her hip, and the other still gripping the receptacle, she fired back. "Of course they still work you unromantic donkey! Probably slipped one into her locker to win her over. Roses are red. Violets are blue. I've got the blue balls so I guess you'll have to do.'' She cleared her throat, reciting the poem loudly and dramatically, causing a subtle reaction out of a few passerby. Though some would say it was because she didn't care about making a scene, it was also because she was starting to lose her sense of volume. "Pleaaaaaaaase. As if I'd ever date anyone, much less them."

Of course Ash could make it painfully obvious just how hard she fell when she did. But she was completely unaware of how easy to read she could be at times. She simply thought of herself as a great pretender. "Tell me about it." She muttered, being equally shocked when he'd revealed he'd begun to look forward to those classes, even though she wasn't sure if it was the poetry he enjoyed or Winona. "They are? Well I guess that makes sense. People who try to make words sound beautiful automatically give off hoe vibes." She remarked, fully aware she had no clue what she was saying, "He would never. He doesn't have the guts to handle a skull like we do."

Please accept the deflection. Make a dumb joke about skulls. Don't make me think about my stupid fucking feelings any longer than I have to. Ashley silently pleaded to Ivy. Begrudgingly handing over her tumbler, she couldn't risk one last retory before Ivy decided her emotional fate. ''How do you think it'd taste mixed with that cucumber lemonade?'' she pointed over at the three pitchers of the beverage. One yellow, one pink, and one cucumber.

TL;DR: It's summer!! Just meeting up with some friends (including her crush...and trying not to stress)

Jenelle Kennedy
I could never in a hundred summers get tired of this
"Ay, mija! You look so faaaancyyy," Maritza remarked, looking over her daughter as the girl settled in the passenger seat beside her. This was met with a frown from Jenelle as she glanced down at the summery, off-white dress she was wearing, smoothing down the hem at her knees.

"Crap...really? But I wear dresses all the time!" She reasoned, scrambling to convince herself that she wasn't overdressed for the occasion. True enough, she often wore casual dresses or a graphic tee with a skirt. But it was undeniable that she looked more sophisticated and grown-up than usual, especially with that slash of cherry red lipstick. "You think I look too fancy?" Jenny lifted her gaze back up at her mother, green eyes pleading for reassurance.

Maritza just shook her head with a warm smile. "You look beautiful, mija. Soooo...who's the boy then?" She teased, earning an eyeroll from Jenny. "Amá! Nobody, godddd..." Jenny laughed and shook her head, but her blushed cheeks betrayed her. Okay, so maybe she wanted to look extra nice because a certain blue-eyed boy was going to be there. A hopelessly oblivious, already smitten with somebody else boy, but still, the stupid urge to get all dolled up was impossible to ignore.

Once dropped off at the waterfront, Jenny strolled through the thick, lively crowd, searching for her friends. She took in a deep breath of salty air, and couldn't help but smile at the hustle and bustle all around her; the sound of the gulls and seabirds, the aroma of endless yummy treats and concessions, happy families and friends all gathering together to just have fun and kick off the summer. It was days like this, events like this that always reminded Jenny how much she truly loved her little town.

Jenny eventually spotted a tall, willowy brunette and an even taller boy with an athlete's build towering over her. Add to that a girl with radiant, flaxen locks and an adorably weedy boy and that it was unmistakably her crew. She rushed over to them, long, coppery waves bouncing behind her, bursting in on the group like a perky, fizzy whirlwind of energy.

"Hey guys!" Wedging herself between Lemon and Mariah, Jenny slung an arm around each girl, giving them both a quick squeeze. "Heya, Levi!" She chirped with a hyperactive, two-handed wave up at the friendly senior. "Hey, Max!" To him, she offered a shy but bright, sunny smile, signing the greeting expertly, having done so countless times before.

TL;DR
Max is overthinking. What's new?
tl;dr
Max Berkowitz

We accept the love we think we deserve.

The hand that caught Max's from behind sent a jolt of shock up his arm, his wrist tensing and starting to pull back before he saw Lemon's face and let out an awkward laugh, trying to quickly brush off the momentary startle.

“Lemon! What’s up?”
His smile lingered a second too long before weakening and fading out.

Max and Lemon had been close friends since elementary school. But this year, Lemon had just whisked past him in the halls, left his messages mostly unread… all of a sudden it was as if she didn’t want to acknowledge his existence. He’d spent months trying to figure out what it is that he did, with no luck. Whatever it was that had happened that made him unbearable to be around, she always had the time to tell him it was nothing important.
For months, that was all she’d ever say about it,
But now that school was out, she wanted to catch up with him. Why now?

Max had been lucky enough to have been embraced by a wide group of friends. He couldn’t take that for granted. He felt that he wasn’t the easiest person to be friends with, and yet he was almost always treated with kindness. The whole town had gone out of their way to make him feel included, and regardless of whether or not he felt like he deserved it, he was grateful.

If Lemon didn’t want to be seen around him at school, though, that stung.
If she’d decided at some point that it was just too damn embarrassing to be associated with him, then who else was losing their patience? He had no way of knowing when everyone would decide he wasn't worth the shame.
It wasn't like he could just ask.

Struggling to keep the anxiety off his face, he gave Lemon another weak smile as Mariah and Levi ran up to join the group. At least it would be less awkward with all five of them, once Jenny arrived. This could still be fun, he kept telling himself.

Mariah stepped over and nudged Max's shoulder. ''Who are you rooting for regarding the fried oreo contest?'' Evidently, Levi and Lemon had been spreading the hype for that. Though Max dreaded the ordeal, he was grateful for the change of subject.

Max paused, took a long sigh, and replied: "Common sense."
If he had to watch his friends poison themselves with fair food as part of some hubristic challenge, he felt like he was allowed to be a little sassy about it. He let his gaze slowly shift from Lemon to Levi and back again, trying to catch their eyes and make sure they were catching his reminder that their contest was a dumb idea.

Finally, appearing between Lemon and Mariah as though she'd popped up by magic, the anchor of the school newspaper Jenelle had arrived. Max couldn't have been happier to have the whole group together. These past four minutes had given him a tension headache to last the whole day.

"Oh, hey!" Max forced himself to relax his shoulders, waving as easily as he could to the last member of their group. Though he kept casting awkward glances back at Lemon, as if he thought he'd catch her scowling at him or something, he tried to hide this by putting up a casual posture. She seemed to be in her usual cheerful mood, but he still felt a little uneasy.

Knowing he was doing a terrible job of hiding this, he looked to Jenny, almost pleading for a distraction: she looked ready for a modeling shoot. How long did she spend on this outfit? His eyes couldn't help but linger on the shiny decorative anchors that held her sandals closed. "Those are cute!" He gently pointed them out. He wasn’t lying-- they were lovely shoes, but he didn't know how obvious it was that he was just talking to make sure he could still feel his arms. "So school's finally over! I'm just tired. Every year it feels longer…"

artemis mercier
i don't wanna be myself, it's making me so unwell
Artemis couldn't say he was especially excited for the party that he'd somehow managed to let Astraea rope him into. It was weirdly difficult to say no to her; not because Artemis worried about hurting her feelings or anything like that, but she always seemed to just... sneak things into conversation. Get him to agree to things in the heat of the moment. And then she'd hold him to things, and before he knew it, he was committed to going to some big party - which was, by the way, a nightmare to him.

Admittedly, he felt quite relieved when Astraea slept in, which is why he didn't bother waking her up. When it got to 10:55, he thought for sure they'd just ditch the whole idea, and he was very much okay with that, despite the fact that he'd put on his entire outfit. He could save it for another day. He'd been reading a book while he was waiting, something he'd bought from the bookstore because he didn't see the issue with supporting the place he worked.

When Astraea flew past him, Artemis only glanced up briefly before sighing heavily, admitting defeat. Even if Astraea wasn't ready in time, she was obviously still very eager on going, and Artemis knew he was never going to be able to get out of it. He heard Astraea hurrying about in the bathroom and, presumably, in her bedroom, but he was still surprised by how quickly she came out, and how... well, slightly put-together, she looked.

He kept his eyes on his book until his roommate sat next to him and, sensing the 'Time to annoy Artemis' note in her tone, promptly closed his book and placed it on the coffee table. "Reading. Now I'm not." He stood, fixed his clothes to make sure nothing was crumpled (even if he didn't want to go out, that didn't mean he couldn't look his best), and then looked down at Astraea with his signature 'I hate everything' look. "Should we get this over with?"

Lemon Pierce

Lemon couldn’t help but enjoy the fact that all her friends were around her, and sure she hadn’t exactly done much with them through the school year, but this was her time to make up for it. Her time to be more for herself and her time to do something that was for her and not for others. A time for her to be at least a little selfish. Of course, the change in weight on her body caused her to tense for only a split second before she realized it was Levi, really among most of her friends Levi was the one she always felt most comfortable around. Though he didn’t know her secret either and really, he never pressed her for information like Max, never made her feel bad for not being as open as expected. They had been friends for a while, but that never meant Lemon knew how to be completely open. It was hard to be open when all she had felt was judged and felt like everything that went wrong was her fault. That she managed to put herself in every bad situation so telling anyone those feelings were not on the table no matter how comfortable she was with someone.

It didn’t take long before Mariah appeared and Lemon pulled the girl into a hug, she had missed spending time with her. “Mariah!!” she squealed just a little as she hugged her before pulling away. Mariah was still a newer friend for Lemon, but Mariah was so nice and wonderful that Lemon felt like she knew her almost her whole life. It was like completing part of a puzzle and Mariah was a key piece to the whole picture. As she looked between the three friends she smiled, “Well, I was thinking we would go to the boats and do the tour?” she signed as she spoke, fixing some of the words because she wasn’t entirely fluent just mostly. It didn’t take long before Lemon turned to another voice.

Of course, the smile grew for Lemon, Jenny was also part of the group now, even though she was also a new friend for Lemon she adored having girl friends. It was new for her, but she loved having them. She smiled at Jenny, “Hi!” she chirped before she watched Max sign at Jenny, and she couldn’t help but giggle at him. She took in the moment in front of her, this moment of pure happiness and joy, the elation that travelled through her chest, “So boats?” she questioned, “Then face paint, then food. Where Max can further judge the contest that’ll be fun. Even though he wants to be a Debbie Downer.” Lemon signed. Making sure he knew she had paid attention, but everyone had come in and she hadn’t been able to originally respond. Her eyes kept catching him looking at her and tilted her head at him directly, “You ok, Max. Do I have something on my face?” Lemon had thought she looked okay when she left, even though she hadn’t really put in any effort but Max staring at her made her uncomfortable.

She pulled Mariah and Jenny each by a hand towards the boat letting the boys follow behind, “I’m so excited!” She skipped still with Jenny and Mariah.

TL;DR Picking up Oliver
tl;dr
Jacob Morass
when you are kind to others, it not only changes you, but the world.

Jacob quickly hopped out of the back seat of the car as his mother pulled up to the sidewalk. He took in a deep breath of the fresh salty air and turned around to see Oliver was taking his time to get out of Jacob’s mother’s vehicle. It seemed that Oli had decided to take that moment to talk about the askew house more with Kathy. “Oliverrrrrrrrrr” Jacob whined as he stuck his head back in the car, resting his hands on the leather seat that he had just left.

“We have things to doooo, people to seeee.” Jacob knew that Winnie planned to meet up with them at the pier. Jacob thought that Winnie was very pretty, she had soft brown eyes and always treated Oli like a person. Which really, just made her that much prettier. Not everyone treated Oliver with the kindness he deserved, and honestly Jacob had a hard time seeing why. Oliver was quiet, but he was smart and he never really tried to get into anyone’s business. Oliver never spoke badly of anyone either, except for crabs and all other forms of arthropods, but that was a completely different story. And completely understandable.

Oliver slowly slid himself out of Kathy’s car, standing on the sidewalk. Jacob noticed how the boy stood this time, while the chaotic music played, and the loud chatter of others. Oliver’s shoulders fell forward and he looked much more nervous than he normally did. “Hey.” Jacob nodded towards the festival first. “Do you want to get something to eat?” He raised a questioning eyebrow at his brunette friend, Jacob didn’t really understand why Oliver never had his own money. But, he didn’t question it, it wasn’t like Jacob had his own money either. Kathy always gave him enough for both boys.

She noticed something that Jacob didn’t, that she didn’t bother to tell him either. She had to protect Jacob from the realities of the world, and well Anchor Bay was an easy place to do that.”

“Come on,” He smirked. “My treat.” It wasn’t his money after all, so why not go all out. He nodded towards the wharves that were covered with lights and tents, so many different smells and options to choose from. “Do you want something sweet or salty?” He looked over at his friend who had begun to pull at his fingers. He knew that his friend did better with fewer options, so he tried to make it simpler for him while they waited for Winnie to join them. Food always made Jacob feel better, so why wouldn’t it work for Oliver.

TL;DR It's just a good fun day with friends
tl;dr
Oliver Dreyfuss
How lonely it is, to be drowning in a place where everyone can swim

The quiet car to the busy environment that had been set up along the waterfront was more than a little jarring. Tucking the small sea turtle tchotchke back into his pocket, suddenly concerned about losing it, he returned to his ritual hand-wringing, which was the only thing keeping him from biting at his knuckles. The joints were already littered with small red marks anyhow, and he'd taken up a habit of trying to avoid doing this in public.

Oliver stared blankly forward, taking everything in without focusing on anything specifically. It was clear he wasn't going to take the initiative and decide what to do first, and luckily Jacob had grown accustomed enough to this that he went ahead and suggested getting something to eat. Oliver heard this, but didn't outwardly show that he had, except for half of a nod that was so subtle it might not have been intentional.

Jacob narrowing it down to sweet and salty, two easy categories, made things much more manageable for Oliver's brain to puzzle through. Though he couldn't help but tarry on the thought that it was possible for food to be both or neither of those qualities, it gave him a point to start at. Besides, Jacob was probably more knowledgeable on these things. Oliver's tastes in food were largely dictated by what could be stolen and tucked away in his school backpack without anyone noticing. He wasn't that picky, but picking and choosing among unfamiliar things was… daunting, to say the least. Oliver preferred to make premeditated decisions. Spontaneity wasn't ever going to be his strongest subject.

"...Sweet." He decided after a pause so long that it seemed as if he were going to ignore the question entirely.

He didn't look as if he wanted to move from his spot at the edge of the curb, aside from shifting his weight from foot to foot, but he'd started looking around and taking notice of the details of his surroundings. The smell of the ocean, the warm air, the way the different stalls and tents lined up… there were things to appreciate here. It was a lot to process, but he'd decided that it wasn't unbearable. Besides, Jacob and Winnie were good field guides to this sort of environment. If he couldn't make an educated action, he at least had a few points of reference. Maybe whoever designed that architectural nightmare house should've had the same.

Winnie Matthews
the scars you can't see are the hardest to heal
When Winnie's alarm went off that morning, she was already up. She could get away and say that her body was used to waking up early for school, but deep down she knew that was a lie. Winnie couldn't sleep. And despite it becoming a recurring event, her nightmares and sleepless nights, she would always deny it and try not to dwell in it too much. And she wasn't going to dwell on it now, today was the end of year festival. Winnie had planned to drag Oliver, with the help of Jacob, all over the festival grounds.

Winnie could tell that her turtle-loving friend was going through something. And she hadn't directly asked him what was going, low-key knowing that he wouldn't answer, but she wasn't dumb. Something was wrong and Win was going to do what she had to do to distract Oliver from whatever it was.

The hot water of the shower that Winnie takes is able to wake her up a little bit more. Due to routine, the dancer knew it would energize her until later in the afternoon and she would have to find other ways to stay alert. Probably with coffee. Winnie doesn't spend to much time getting ready, throwing on the outfit that she constructed in the middle of the night. She knew that it was going to get hot, so it was very light, but it was still fancy enough. She wanted to look nice since she was going to meet up with her boyfriend, Dustin, later. Winnie was also going to formally meet Dustin's best friend Ashley. She had met the new freshman in passing and had exchanged words over Twitter, but they never actually hung out.

Nona didn't want to seem like the girlfriend that tried splitting up best friends, she wasn't that insecure and she trusted Dustin, a lot better than she trusted her ex-boyfriend Noah. Besides Ashley seemed really important to Dustin, so Winnie was going to be friends with the younger girl.

The twins are able to make it out of their house without incidence, their mother already off to work and their youngest brother, Isaiah was spending the day with a friend. Winnie's been avoiding her mother for days ever since she came out to her as bisexual. She could say that the confession to Regina had caused for her sleep to get worse, but she hasn't talked to anyone about it not even Chance. And as her twin brother sat in the passenger seat of her car, she thought of possibly explaining why the tension in the house has gotten so thick, but the car ride was not long enough.

The sight of the festival grounds is amusing to Winnie. She hadn't really attended in three years, same with Chance. Both twins deciding to avoid the pain of losing their father instead of basking in all their memories. But they both made the commitment to join their friends to have fun. The twins make plans to meet before they leave and part ways to their respective friend groups. It doesn't take long for Winnie to spot both Jacob and Oliver. Hi boys!

She dawns a smile and quickly makes her way over and when she gets closer she launches a hug around Jacob. Now Ollie, time for your hug!

Astraea Dupante
there are so many beautiful reasons to be happy....

Astraea could only roll her eyes. “You were hoping I wasn’t going to remember.” She drawled out the last word as she tilted her head towards her roommate. “Weren’t you.” She added as she squinted her eyes at her lanky friend.

Quickly she hopped off the couch taking hold of Artemis’ wrists as she leaned back with all her force. “Well, unlikely for you, I forget nothing!” She proclaimed. That was a lie, Astraea tended to be very forgetful these days. Artemis knew it was a lie, Carson knew it was a lie, their mailman probably knew it was a lie. Heck even the sketchy old man neighbor likely knew it was a lie, and they had only talked in passing. He tried to sell her come coke once, but Astraea could not understand why he was trying to sell her a can of coca cola for so much money. She could get it cheaper from the small convenience store down the street.

How that man was staying in business she would never know.

As Artemis begrudgingly stood from their half-broken couch Astraea went off to list all the reasons that he should in fact be excited for. Why the festival did not suck and how they would have so much fun with Carson and Hassim, however, she was very careful to leave that last part out. Knowing all to well, that if Artemis knew there would be someone he did not know, someone who was very new, he would absolutely refuse to come. Astraea had barely gotten him to agree to come in the first place. She did not need him running away now.

“It’s time to put that book away.” She commanded, placing her hands on her hips before she begun to skip towards the door. What could she say, she was excited, and probably needed ADHD medication.

Artemis had to drive them to the boating docks, which honestly, Astraea was surprised they even made it. He could have totally broken his promise and drove down some random roads and Astraea wouldn’t have even known the difference. Even after three years in Anchor Bay, every turn looked the same to her.

Thankful he was a good driver, as he slowly pulled into the parking spot, Astraea didn’t even bother to wait till he had fully come to a stop, she had already thrown herself out of the car as she caught sight of Carson waiting just across the way. “CARSON!!!” She screamed as she ran as fast as she could towards the brunette, practically leaping into her arms. “Hi” She smirked as she pulled her face away from the crook of her neck. “How are you.” Why were her cheeks burning so much right now, she had not even been out in the sun for two minutes and yet she was already sun burnt?! No way.

“Come on.” She said as she released the girl from her grasp and waved her towards Artemis’ car. “Artie is over here.” She turned on her heal, bouncing as she made her way back towards Artemis’s car.

Levi made sure to remove his arm from around Lemon's shoulder as she stepped forward to hug Mariah and, a few moments later, Jenny. Levi was certainly closest with Lemon, more than he was with anyone else in the group, but he was also very much the kind of person who could make conversation with literally anyone, and feel comfortable doing it. He shoved his hands in the pocket of his jacket, smiling as he watched Lemon greet their friends. She'd been... off, recently, and Levi really wanted her to be happy. Even if it was only for a little while.

He was also perfectly content for her to plan out their evening, and he thought it was probably for the best that the Oreo eating competition be last. He would hate to feel sick the entire time and not be able to enjoy the party, so it was better to get everything else out of the way first. Plus, Max didn't seem that into it, and Levi wanted to give him a chance to enjoy the fair, too. Maybe by the time they decided to do the competition, they could find someone else to judge since it seemed to cause Max more stress than anything.

He hung back with Max as Lemon pulled the girls forward, following from behind. He looked at Max and smiled, not really having any idea how to communicate with him but desperate to try. It always went like this; Levi felt like he might speak too fast or something, plus he didn't really know how to sign, but Max always managed to understand anyway - or they could work it out. "Hey, Max. What's your favourite fair food?" He asked, trying to speak slowly and clearly so Max could make the words out, while also miming putting food into his mouth. Asking people about their favourite food was Levi's go-to icebreaker... mostly because he liked pretty much every food so he could always say they had something in common.
