personality

Wren is an impulsive, fun-loving teen who presents typical signs of combined ADHD. She goes through hobbies on a monthly basis, becoming absorbed in her hyper-fixation to the point of obsession. Typically, she'll stick with the hobby to the point of becoming slightly above average in skill or knowledge, then drop it for a new interest. Her grades reflect this: she's typically a B & C student, but for the rare subject or unit of curricula which aligns with a current or former hyper-fixation, she will breeze through it with an A. Her constant cycling of interests has made her extremely open to new experiences. She is enthralled by leaving her comfort zone, and is constantly on the hunt for adventure.

When she's trapped in a boring or unstimulating environment, she becomes frustrated and antsy. While she does have combined ADHD, her hyperactivity is mild: typically, she's just seen as outgoing, but when she's under-stimulated, she will fidget and tap her fingers. Largely because of her gender, Wren is undiagnosed and unmedicated. Her father views her neurodivergent traits as personality flaws, and has a short temper with her. Wren has had trouble fitting in with children her own age, as her fleeting interests were often viewed as too nerdy; however, she doesn't exactly fit in with the nerdy groups, either, as she loses interest in shared hobbies too often.

While Wren's hobbies are, by and large, hyper-fixations which she drops within a month or two, she does also have a few special interests, which are differentiated by prolonged obsession. More specifically, Wren has two: music and bowling. She has a deep love for '60s garage rock: the energetic, raw, and unorthodox melodies seem to work well with her brain, and she'll often play songs on repeat to focus. This love extends to the closely-related genres of punk rock and metal. While living in the suburbs, she joined a neighborhood garage band and became pretty good at playing bass guitar. However, after moving to Hawkins, she has precious few opportunities to play outside of marching band, where she plays the trumpet.

Being an only child - and neurodivergent - Wren has always struggled with making genuine friends. Thanks to her outgoing nature and massive repertoire of interests, she has never had difficulty making acquaintances. In fact, she's discovered that it's rather formulaic. Be friendly, ask polite questions about them, dig until you find an shared interest, and let the conversation from there. In that sense, Wren has made good acquaintances with almost everyone in school. She's well-liked, and fine to hang out with in class or at school functions. But at the end of the day, she never has someone to hang out with outside that. She would usually head home, and be completely, utterly alone until school began the next day. So, as soon as she could, she got a job. However, now that she's moved to a much smaller town, she's jobless and looking to fill the void.

history

Wren grew up in Naperville, IL, a suburb of Chicago. Her dad is a straight-laced, conservative fire chief whose job had provided a decent middle-class living for himself and his daughter. Wren's mother was out of the picture for as long as she could remember, killed in a car accident when she was an infant. At a young age, Wren was taught to be self-sufficient, as her father worked long hours at the station. She would play with the neighborhood children - most of whom were misfits a few years older than her - and check in with their parents, who watched out for her as a favor to her dad. This dynamic persisted into Wren's middle school years, when she joined her friends' band and went out with them for nights on the town. Most of her friends in this group were high schoolers at that point, meaning that Wren had access to weed, booze, and could rely on her friends for a ride by the time she was in late middle school. Her band would begin playing small gigs at local bars and hole-in-the-walls, which greatly concerned her father.

Wren's dad is a conservative reactionary whose views are greatly influenced by the backlash to the social revolution of the '60s. He's prejudiced against groups which he views as un-patriotic for leading the anti-war movement, regardless of whether they were truly anti-war or pro-civil rights. He's racist, homophobic, and distrusting of boys who wear their hair long. When he saw that his daughter was hanging out with a group of miscreants, he banned her from seeing her friends and coerced her to join marching band - a proper, wholesome musical outlet which he hoped would keep her out of trouble. However, with his long work hours, there was only so much he could realistically do to restrict his child. She continued seeing her friends and playing in their band by simply scheduling their outings for when her dad was at work.

This marked the beginning of Wren's antagonistic relationship with her father, which continues to this day. His scolding and clear distaste for Wren's activities only emboldened her: she smoked more weed, played more gigs, and by the time she entered high school and discovered "unnatural" feelings for other girls, she didn't hold back. At her old school, it was relatively easy to be an open bisexual. There were others like her, and her skill at making acquaintances helped to dispel most anti-queer prejudice among her peers. Moreover, there was simply less prejudice, as they were located right next to Chicago, which was home to people from all different walks of life. The teen began working at a bowling alley for many reasons: she's obsessed with the sport; she needed money to finance her hobbies; she wanted to save for a car; she wanted to keep occupied during lonely stints after school; and she wanted an excuse to leave the house when her father was home. Wren only embraced her queer identity more after finally getting a car, which allowed her to visit the city on her own, and hang around gay bars.

Her relationship with her father deteriorated more and more, and came to a head when he discovered that Wren was dating a female classmate. Deciding that the city was too great a corrupting influence on his daughter, he began searching for a rural, more wholesome place to live. He eventually decided on Hawkins, which was looking for a new fire chief after a mall fire resulted in the tragic deaths of several teens and the chief of police. So, the year Wren was set to graduate, she was forced to give up everything she loved about her life. Her friends she'd known since childhood, the band she loved, the fantastic nightlife she'd explored with abandon, and the job she genuinely loved. All gone. Not only has her life been upended, but she's found herself in a place that's both unbearably boring, and outright hostile to those that don't fit in.

At this point, Wren is full of vengeance and hatred for her dad. For her first semester at Hawkins high, she struggled to adapt, and hardly even made acquaintances with anyone. But at the start of her second and final semester, she's finally decided to make the best of a shitty situation. She's begun seeking out social groups again, and has joined the marching band - this time, of her own free will.

  • APPEARANCE:

Having grown out of his tween years, Peter has become more and more the spitting image of his older brother, to the extent someone might actually mistake the two. He is only a few inches shorter, with the same shade of blond hair, worn in a similar style. He has the same Kirkland family eyebrows, but his eyes are a deep blue, as opposed to Arthur's green. He outgrew his child's sailor uniform many years ago, and now prefers a navy blue suit when meeting with other countries. However, when on sea or alone, he wears a dark-colored crackerjack uniform, which was commonly worn by sailors of the allied powers. His voice has deepened to a low-alto high-tenor range. He's of average build, but his toned body belies his athleticism: he is an accomplished open water swimmer, competitive sailor, and rower, and years of calisthenics for training have allowed him incredible range and grace of movement.
