General Plot
The year is 2017. But in this universe, biogenetic tech is much more advanced. Insane projects have been done that we wouldn't think would be possible in our world. In fact, the tech is so advanced it has the capability to alter someone's appearence. In this universe, you can go somewhere to have your hair color changed or your eye color changed or even your skin color changed, all through the use of biogenetics. But, the industry hasn't just attracted the attention of people who don't like the way they look, it's also gained interest from the military. They thought, "How can we make the greatest soldier?". Well, let's just say someone had the brilliant idea to combine human and animal genetics to make the greatest soldier. Just imagine a cheetah in the Marines or an otter in the Navy SEALS or-you get the gist. They were doing everything right, so they thought. The method they used was something like a virus. It is introduced to the system, and as it's "infection" progressed it would change the once human individual.Two forms were made, one that is more airborne while the other is more "contagious" through contact. Both had worked! There were some occasions with a few different strains where the subject went feral, which wasn't pretty. Sometimes the subjects go a little crazy and, well, same results as the feral subjects. Now of course, these test were kept hidden from the public. It was a well kept secret, until "it" happened. Some think it was a disaster, some think it was a planned strike. Whatever it was, something bad happened. Some sites, an unexplained explosion occurred, others a sudden power outage to containment, either way, the "virus" was released. As it spread, other nations shut their borders to the U.S. Soon there was conflict within the States. Not just humans versus infected and survivors versus ferals, but a group versus the government. Chaos is probably the best word that could be used to describe what used to be America. And your characters will be going through it all from the start.
The Disaster
June 8th, 2017. At approximately 2:30 PM CDT, buildings of one company were attack across the country. The worst hits were in St. Louis, Missouri and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The reason why was unknown until something strange happening. These things that could be described as bipedal animals with a hand structure similar to a human's, but everything else looked like an animal. Some acted and talked as any human would, but others would act like feral animals. Most believe that these were linked to the attacks. It must have released something that is doing that to people. Some people's reactions were extreme. Some people took up arms and started killing them. Others decided to do the opposite and welcome them in. Still, there is conflict. Whether it be between infected versus non-infected or survivors versus ferals, it is chaotic. America is breaking down
The Virus
The virus comes not only in two forms, airborne and contact, but also 2 different strains. These strains are Canine and Feline. Now of course, these are unknown for a while after the disaster occurs, unless you can find someone who was tied to the experiments. Another thing, be careful of ferals
Airborne
The airborne form of this virus is, of course, communicable via the air. It is the less extreme form, but you run a higher chance of contracting it this way. The only way to avoid this is a gas mask. It can take days, even weeks, for this to incubate and begin to actually do some changes. Depending on the host's health, the transformation can take a longer or shorter time. Hosts who have good health and are not weak will undergo a long transformation process. It could take weeks! Hosts with poor health and have a weakened system will go through a shorter transformation process. It could be anywhere between 12 hours to 4 days. There will be a period of time where the host will take on the mentality of the animal that they are transforming into. This usually happens around mid-process and doesn't last very long. Anywhere between a half an hour to 12 hours. Once it fades they will return to their normal selves. The airborne isn't as sudden and painful as the contact, but it will cause some discomfort. By the end you're basically a bipedal animal with opposable thumbs. A few of the first signs of infection are changes in the eyes, dizziness, and mild nausea
Contact
This is the more extreme form. The way you contract this form is by being bit by an infected, sexually transmitted, or any other way that the virus can be directly introduced into your system. Even ferals can infect you this way. It is very fast and very painful. A healthy host can expect transformation to occur within 3 hours of contracting it. The transformation process is very short and painful. It can take anywhere for 10 long minutes to 6 agonizing hours. This happens if you survive the attack that caused you to contract the virus. As it is with the airborne, the host will act like an animal for a period of time in the middle of the process. It can't be emphasized enough how painful this will be for the host. This is why original subjects were sedated before testing occurred. A few of the first signs of infection is fever, severe nausea, severe pain, and of course a bite mark, if that's how they contracted it
Strains
As said above, there are 2 strains; Canine and Feline. Both will have their own strengths and weaknesses. One has a higher chance of going feral than other. Both strains have been tweaked a tad bit to allow for more human-like vision. Either way, both are special in their own way
Canine Strain
The Canine strain triggers a transformation into a canine. Common ones are wolves and a few of the better attack dogs. The rarer ones are foxes. The Canine strain was going to be used to make a better version of your average soldier. Advantages of this strain is that most canines are stronger than most felines. Most canines are also larger than most felines. The bad part about this strain is that it has a higher chance of going feral than feline and canines are usually slower than felines, not to mention less agile. One more thing. When someone is undergoing transformation it is advisable to avoid them once the take on the canine mentality for a bit
Feline Strain
The Feline strain is basically the same as the canine, but for felines. The common ones are cheetahs and leopards. The rarer ones are black panthers. Why aren't there lions or tigers? Because those were dubbed "too big" for what the feline strain was meant to do. Felines would have been used for the stealthy ops. Recon, sniping, that kind of stuff. Advantages of this strain is that felines are usually faster and more agile than canines. They also have quicker reflexes. Disadvantages of it is that most felines are smaller and weaker than most canines
