Biography

vindaya was born in india and quickly put up for adoption. at age 2 she was adopted by a couple who took her back to the UK to live with them. her father, american originally, was practicing law and her mother owned an art gallery. it pretty quickly became apparent that her mother liked the idea of having a child more than actually having one. vindaya wasn't a troublemaker, but she wasn't the easiest child either; she was speech delayed, often ignored her parents, and liked to explore on her own.

she probably would've grown out of this behavior as she grew up, but her mother came to resent her imperfect child and her husband, who'd convinced her to adopt in the first place, and who would frequently get wrapped up in his own work. this started about a decade of emotional abuse towards both her husband and daughter, but mostly her daughter. her mother convinced vindaya that everything that went wrong was not only her fault, but an intentional ploy to hurt her mother, who she should've been grateful to for "rescuing" her. her mother held it over her head that she could put her back up for adoption at any time.

vindaya did well in school, but didn't make any long-term friends. she'd make friends out of the blue and move on just as suddenly without explanation. she went to her mother's gallery openings, prim, proper, stiff, and unhappy, dressed to the nines in whatever her mother chose. her father's sympathy and strength and was a great source of comfort for vindaya as a child. where she could never earn her mother's approval, she could always earn her father's.

things abruptly changed when vindaya was 15. while out in the backyard, a large stray dog jumped the fence and attacked her. her mother watched it all happen, but didn't move to stop it, even as vindaya was obviously injured. when her father came home, only to find his wife watching their daughter getting mauled and deliberately doing nothing to assist, he decided enough was enough. he wanted to move back to the U.S. with vindaya and his wife agreed, though they never finalized a divorce. vindaya and her father just packed up and left.

the two moved to corvallis, where vindaya's father continued practicing law and vindaya finished high school. when she first started high school in the US, she was very reserved and kept to herself, feeling kind of lost, but as she got used to living without her mother, she opened up a great deal. she was able to make friends, even. she also learned more about what emotional abuse was and what it looked like and, terrified and angry that she'd been subjected to it for so long, overcompensated; she began refusing to apologize, spent time with her friends but would never go out of her way for them or really act like much of a friend at all, etc. she did everything she could think of to "overcome" what her mother put her through. her father eventually became a judge and vindaya enrolled at the university of oregon with the intention of pursuing a biochem degree and then move onto medical school. during her second semester sophomore year, her father began receiving death threats. so, with his encouragement, vindaya transferred to NYU without completing the semester. she took up a job at the Starbucks on Astor Place to help pay for living expenses. once she completed her undergrad degree, she moved on to NYU's medical school.

additional info:
- has a lot of informational wall posters - not about any topic in particular, she just likes the aesthetic of them and reading random facts
- has a lot of small animal figurines made of things like glass, marble, and precious stones - they're all pretty simple and smooth. her favorite is an elephant made out of black goldstone
- often pulls late nights or all nighters
- surprisingly a morning person
- has a messy, jagged scar from the dog incident on her left shoulder
- likes to dress kind of femininely/business casual; lots of blouses, skirts, dresses, cardigans, etc. lots of dry cleaning and ironing
- harbors a bit of curiosity for where she comes from, so she took classes and online courses to learn hindi during her undergrad
- doesn't like hookups or one night stands much. not a very tactile person
- prefers to wear her hair in a braid and/or a bun, rarely wears it down
- likes light makeup and perfume. paints her nails every now and then - always neutral colors
- she wears glasses, but finds that contacts are usually more practical, except for when she forgets to take them out before falling asleep. not always intentional; sometimes she falls asleep at her desk
- carries around a small day planner/address book. she replaces it every year
- occasionally experiences sleep paralysis
- clicks pens, taps pencils and fingernails against desks or whatever she might be writing on. taps feet or fingers if nothing else is available. sits with her legs crossed most of the time
- prefers writing in black pen and always in script
- goes quiet and avoids eye contact when confronted or nervous. tends to brush off dust or lint, smooth out wrinkles in her clothes, or adjust buttons/collars/belts/straps on shoes/jewelry. doesn't do very well at conflict resolution, for herself or for anyone else
- isn't quick to apologize. she is, however, quick to accept responsibility
- fixes her hair when frustrated; taking it out of a bun or braid or putting it up again. also sometimes paces
- left-handed
- goes on dates, but has never had a standard, committed relationship with anyone
