--The Story Begins--
...

“....You have to….Save them….”

In the vaguest of your memories, you remember a voice unfamiliar to you. No sense of time remains in that single line spoken, it sounds as fresh as it is ancient. How long ago did you hear that voice, or have you just heard it today? Spoken by who, when, where? Perhaps those are questions that you should’ve thought more about, but just like that voice, they merely pass by your mind, leaving barely any footprint. All that remains is a sense of an existence that you have paid no mind about, casted away into the corner of your shadows.

However, what has already been left behind will not just go away. Today. Something seems a little bit off about today. You cannot tell what it is, or why you feel that way. Nothing changed about today. You went about with your day, followed your plans, whether those are good or bad. Some of you carried unique abilities that you have already acquired and getting used to. Some are still new to it, or have just realized it yourselves. Either way, the day passes by, weighing down one more second in this life from the ordinary world.

Then, everything changed.

In the blink of an eye, everything flipped around. There is no time for you to perceive the change, to absorb what just happened. By the time your brain has registered the surroundings, you have discovered that you are now somewhere completely estranged to you. Unfamiliar architecture, streets, buildings, signs. You realize you’re standing in, or somewhere near, what seems to be a large city square of a place unknown to you. Lots of people seem to be roaming about in this big space at the center of the city, though of course, you don’t know any of these people.

You would’ve wished that you had more time to process what had just happened, but fate will not allow you even just one more second. Just as you are standing there, you feel a vibration in the air that slowly increases in intensity. The end of your hair stands up. You feel the goosebumps. From above your head, you start to hear a rumbling sound. You look up to the sky above the city square.

There, you see a giant crack begins to form. It grows in size, increases in length, until it shatters from the middle. People around you begin to scream, as if they know what is happening. They are running, escaping, you feel the fear in their eyes when you exchange gaze with them.

A long, muscled arm then stretches out from the widening crack. Long, dark claws follow the end of its thick, short fingers covered in fur. That is just the intro, however. As soon as that arm makes its appearance, the rest of its body is quick to follow.

A thundering roar tears through the air. Then, a giant, mighty beast that you’ve never seen before leaps down from the hole in the sky. It towers over you, and you figure it’s at least 10 meters tall. It balances its size on its powerful four limbs planted firm on the ground. Its head, disturbingly huge, looks like the distorted face of a lion, its muzzle unusually long, its eyes particularly sharp. As it opens its mouth, you could see its long, sharp fangs dripping saliva. Black fur covered its body with weird spikes sticking out from its back. What’s rather unique is its tail, as it is covered in thin metal unlike the rest of its muscular body. It is long and powerful as it whips the air, creating a thunderous crack.

You will soon notice that there are still civilians around, those who didn’t get to escape fast enough, or those whose legs have gone limp and are unable to move. A child, looking only about 7 years old, sits trembling right underneath the monster’s belly, hidden in the shadows. His fearful silence is the only thing keeping the monster from noticing him. You will also realize that you are not the only one who looks confused. Those who look like they’re from the same world as you who have just been thrown into this weird place. Realization also hits you fast enough that the monster will start to aim for you soon.

What will you do? Flee, or fight? Is there a purpose to the arbitrary superpower you have gained, after all?

As if responding to your mood, whatever it is, the strange marking that has mysteriously appeared on your body begins to glow.

The monster turns to look at you.

[Location: An antique store]

Emergency Action!

A Poex has been spotted in Raevedel Square. Repeat. A Poex has been spotted in Raevedel Square. Classification...Level C. Classification...Level C.

All nearby certified hunters, please move to the location immediately. Your assistance is required.

A high-pitched, robotic voice echoed through the entire city on repeat as it was broadcasted through the speakers located around the streets. At the same time, a loud beeping could be heard from the mobile phones carried by all hunters within 0.5 miles in range from the city square. Professional hunters only, however. Only hunters who are properly certified and are still registered in the system had their emergency alarm system set off, and those include not only hunters from the Vahemen Hunter Association. Those who have been certified but did not choose to work purely for VHA but took on various other forms of occupations, one of them being the Professors of the well-known Vehemen Academy, would also be alerted of the situation, if the broadcast had not been screaming loud enough. Followed by the loud beeping on their phones would be a message that displayed the location of the Poex and its danger level.

Different from these “professionals,” then, would be the average citizens. A loud alert notification, and a warning message popped up to beware of the Poex and suggesting evacuation from the area. Ironically, students of the Vahemen Academy would also be receiving this message. As students who are still in training, it may be obvious that they are still too weak--if not yet certified--to be a part of the action. However, a certain student was not pleased.

Hello? Eiich---Professor Kikuchi? I’m dropping this report. I’ll meet ya there.” A quick dial on the phone, then the lass hung up without waiting for the other’s response. She exhaled, a certain excitement sparked in her eyes. Within the small antique store filled with ancient artifacts of years of history, Cleo only felt uncomfortable being bound in such a cramped, tiny space. Rather politely, she placed down a clipboard filled with barely any notes down onto the counter, where an old man with round eyes and typical walrus mustache sat, eyes wide, confused.

Thank you for your time. Let's go, Elise. You’re coming too, right?” A casual--if not careless expression of gratitude, was given, then the girl turned and looked toward the other standing behind her. In her hands would be another clipboard. On the inside, Cleo realized the amount of f*ck she gave for this is zero. She used to be a gangster, later down a criminal bad enough to be labeled a terrorist. Now a professor is forcing her to bring up a long history report of some ancient artifacts before the semester even begins.

As if she would actually complete this shit.

Her sharp eyes spotted a motorcycle outside the store, with its engine left running on. A quick assumption, then, would be the owner got off temporarily to visit probably one of the stores nearby but didn’t leave yet. She had never been one to really care, as she hopped onto the motorcycle rather fast. Testing the engine, she heard the brzoom sounds of the motorcycle ready to run.

Get on and hold tight.

Only a couple exchange, and the two girls would be spotted riding on a stolen motorcycle, wildly driving past the speed limit as they forced their ways through the streets into the city square, leaving a single cry of “waaait my motorcycleeee” behind.

At the same time, other people would begin to take action as well...

~Frederika von Eisenhart~
-- Forlorn Student Athlete --

Status: Nominal
Wearing: School Uniform
Location: Unknown

---

Deviancy... rule-breaking... truancy... concepts that could not possibly be more foreign to one Frederika von Eisenhart, and yet here she was, for the first day in her entire life, ducking out from the prestigious high school she attended for no other purpose than to wander. The events of the last two weeks had broken her once immutable "performance at all costs" outlook on life, and she now found herself somewhat adrift in life philosophy, her endless pursuit of perfection now recognized as meaningless without a cause to back it up. Sadly, even if she were to find one, what could she possibly do at this point? High school was rapidly drawing to a close, and soon she would be off to university, promising an even greater range of meaningless challenges and trials for her to overcome.

Still, a small voice in the back of her head said there was something more to life than this, something that wasn't just further spinning the hamster wheel of accolades and awards, that was available to her if only she could see it. But what was it? There seemed to be little room to step out of line in her current existence; even this small action she was taking right now was certain to be scrutinized and lectured to her at length about later that day. With little recourse, she found herself standing stoically on a random street corner in the city surrounding the school, unsure what to do at this point. She closed her eyes, and breathed deep, allowing herself for once to simply open her senses to the ebb and flow of the world around her-

“....You have to….Save them….”

-and nearly jumped when a scream pierced the air, followed by several more. Frederika's icy blue eyes shot open, and in an instant, a wave of disorientation ran roughshod over her as she fought to take in the realization that she was no longer in known territory. 'What is this that has occ-" came a low murmur from the befuddled girl, before a monstrous roar she had never heard the likes of tore the air apart, cutting her off mid-sentence. She turned to face the direction the crowds were fleeing from, her skirt whipping about as she spun in place, and came face to face with a beast pulled straight from her nightmares. Her eyes shot wide open as she took in the sheer size of the shadowy abomination, the utter incongruity of its hairy body being mashed up against its armor like tail. For a split second, she considered fleeing as well, as abject fear set in, her feet already beginning to take steps backwards as if to preempt her decision to stay or run.

In that moment, she saw the others gathered nearby: civilians frozen in fear at the giant beast, and at the center of it all, a child underneath, certain to be killed the instant it discovered him. Frederika halted her retreat, brows knitting as an intense frown appeared on her face. Inakzeptabel! Again I have only focused upon myself. She turned back to witness the monster again, her gaze steeling into intention. There is purpose to me being here now, in this place. If I truly wish for valor, it is time to act on behalf of another... She looked around the street she was on for anything she could use against the creature, but everything was either bolted down or cemented in place. In desperation, she began to pull at a street sign to pry it free of its moorings, initially obtaining nothing more than a nice set of bruises for her efforts.

But as her concentration intensified, and the beast began to move towards the paralyzed bystanders, the familiar burning sensation of a warrior's oath incarnate began to course through her veins. And as the symbol on her back began to glow, the concrete around the street sign started to give way, first cracking, then shattering into a small explosion of debris as she veritably ripped the sign straight out of the sidewalk and hefted it aloft.

... and for that, there is only one action that can be undertaken. Without a single moment of hesitation, she dashed straight towards the monstrosity in a blur, the sign wound up behind her in a gigantic swing. As the beast turned to face her, her body seemed to act on instinct as she leapt high into the air straight at its head, a shout roaring out at the creature so as to draw it's attention away from those it intended to cause harm.

"Nein!"

Ravyn Bellanova

Ravyn was having a pretty normal day, at least on the surface. She and a few of her girlfriends were at the Manhattan Mall casually shopping for cute dresses to wear to a party that weekend. She had found this absolutely gorgeous forest green satin romper that would be perfect. She was subtly flirting with the cashier and handing him her credit card when---
“....You have to….Save them….”
Ravyn froze.
" The fu--"
She blinked, and in that moment, everything that she knew was gone.
" What the..."
She frantically looked at her surroundings. Her friends were gone, the store was gone, the cute cashier... all gone and replaced by a... a... a something? A monster. Monsters don't exist! Where was she? All she had was her credit card, the romper, her purse, and her phone. She looked at the people around her. One girl was... why would run at the monster? She said 'nein' or 'nine'? That girl's either German or crazy. Or both.
Should she do something? She had her pepper spray, but what good could that do? There was a good sized rock by her feet. Should she throw it? What was happening?

I'm in shock. No. I'm insane. No. I'm in shock and I'm insane.
She picked up the rock and took a deep breath.
" Worth a shot..."
Ravyn hurled the rock at the monster's head. She immediately regretted the decision. She groaned.
" I seriously just threw a *rock* at a *monster* at least *5 times* my height... I am so totally going insane..."

Adrian was frustrated. Exceptionally so. Earlier in the morning, he'd decided to head down to the coast, to Santa Barbara. It was a whim, really. He'd just had nothing to do, and couldn't find anything to busy himself with. Ever since graduation, Adrian found himself sitting on his hands more and more often. He couldn't stand being so bored. So he got out of that house and that stifling town. Admittedly, he may have decided to go a little farther than necessary, but who was going to complain? Okay, yes, Adrian was complaining. Things just weren't going right. It started small in the beginning, such as stubbing his toe on a table, tripping over his shoelaces, stepping into a muddy puddle. Each was a minor mishap and on their own, shouldn't have been much of a problem. But the misfortunes continued to build and build until here he was. On a swelteringly hot bus with a punctured tire and no replacement in sight. To top it all off, the bus had no air conditioning to speak of. What a mistake.

Adrian sighed and made up his mind. The city wasn't that far away - he could see it right now, it couldn't be more than a mile or two - and there was no way he was going to sit here for another hour. He stood up, slung his bag over his shoulder and stepped down from the bus. Ignoring the sweaty stare of the bus driver, he set out down the road, shielding his eyes from the harsh glare of the sun above. Soon enough, Adrian was out of sight of the bus. The noise of the unhappy crowd left behind, Adrian was more than happy to enjoy the peace and quiet, even as the sun beat down about him. Of course, he couldn't ignore it for long. All too soon fatigued, Adrian was forced to take a break. Lo and behold, a suspiciously convenient shelter. Though "shelter" was being generous. It was more of a ramshackle bench shielded by a few dingy planks elevated on four old posts. But it was shade, and it'd do.

Dropping his bag on the bench and collapsing beside it, Adrain heaved a sigh of relief. He already felt better. He closed his eyes and leaned back against the hard, cool back of the bench. It was glorious. A bit too glorious, perhaps. Adrian let his guard down a bit too much, and soon enough, he'd begun to doze.

“....You have to….Save them….”

Hm?

Was someone speaking?

It sounded familiar. Where was it from?

Adrian grumbled and stirred lightly, coming out of his slumber. And then there was the scream. Ear-piercingly high, it startled him out of his half-awake state immediately. Adrian tried to leap to his feet, but halfway up got them tangled up and tumbled to the ground. He slammed into the cool, stony ground hard. He groaned as he lay against the ground, still disoriented and barely able to acknowledge the sounds around him. Was that people? Screams? What wa--- wait. Stone? Adrian's eyes shot open and clambered up to his hands and knees. Yes, stone. Where had the sone even come from? Before he could properly process what was going on, Adrian heard another scream. His head shot up from the ground and finally saw where he was. Crowds of panicking people. Tall buildings. Signs, structures, and more that he didn't recognize. This... was not Santa Barbara.

And then he saw it. The reason for the panic. Monster. That was the only thing Adrian could think of. Nothing else seemed appropriate to describe the horror before his eyes. He was stunned into silence, panicked into stiffness. Adrian just stood there, watching. Until he heard a different cry, this one much different from the previous ones.

"NEIN!"

Now surprised for an entirely different reason, Adrian watched as a blonde girl - or at least, he assumed she was; at this point, he wasn't sure of anything - charged at the monster wielding a massive street sign as a weapon. Why was she running at it? Ah. He saw now. The child. There was a child under the creature. Oh, how heroic. Adrian backpedalled as he continued to watch the beast. No, he wasn't one for heroics. Leave that to the people qualified for it. He stopped. No, well, wasn't he qualified? Adrian looked down at his hands, ignoring the chaos all around. He wasn't exactly normal, was he? Adrian remained in place, hesitating between his sense of self-preservation and duty.

"Damnit."

Adrian took a step, then two, and then suddenly, he was racing towards the large monster. This was a terrible idea. He didn’t even have a plan. Then Adrian saw another girl, this one a redhead. She picked up a large rock, of all things, and threw it at the monster. Actually, might work. Adrian searched the ground as he ran, finally spotting a large rock about the size if his head. He snatched it up with a grunt and continued on his way.

He neared the monster. Once he was sure he was within range, Adrian found the rock out in front of him and pushed. He forced it forward through the air with more force than he’d ever tried before. The stone flew forward at the creature, continuously accelerating as Adrian forced more of his power until his head throbbed and he could hear his own heartbeat. This better work.

Ravyn saw another person chucking a rock at the monster. Maybe she wasn't insane after all. She searched for another rock. She found one, heavier than the first. She had difficulty picking it up, then had an 'aha' moment. She had... powers... maybe that could aid her. She took a deep breath and did a little soul searcher and found the root of her power, deep inside her core. She'd been practicing on and off, but nothing of this scale. Wait. Why was she fighting this thing again? There's a small child. That counts for something. Anyways. She hurled the rock with all her might and as much of her power as she could muster. That didn't do much. It fell just short of the creature.
"Shit!"
A searing pain shot through her head. She staggered back.
" What am I doing... think Ravyn think...."
Ravyn pulled the pepper spray out of her bag. She could run at the monster and try to spray it with pepper spray... no that would likely get her killed. And she was wearing 5 inch heels. She took a deep breath. Small objects. Pebbles. Maybe it'll annoy it? Distract it? But what's the point? She had no idea where she was, no connection to where she was, she doesn't know anyone here... there's no reason to be risking her life. But here she was, about to launch pebbles at a strange and honestly terrifying creature. She focused her energy. About 5 pebbles picked up around her and flung themselves at the monster. It felt as if the pebbles were shooting themselves through her head... she launched another 5. She should stop. This can't be healthy. Why isn't she stopping? Is it her 'civic duty'? Her headache was becoming unbearable. She should stop. If she passes out, she'll embarrass herself. If she runs away, she'll embarrass herself. Why is she worried about being embarrassed? Oh yeah. The cute guy fighting along side her. She took a jarring step forward, her vision going black at the edges. She stopped the bombardment of the pebbles. She probably didn't even do anything. Ravyn was totally drained for nothing. The ground looked incredibly inviting... no. She would not pass out. Or was that really her choice... She swayed, slowly loosing her balance. Her head felt like it was going to explode.
" Well. That was incredibly stupid of me."
Ravyn dropped to a knee and that was all she allowed herself. She propped her head up with a hand. This was not the time or place. This was absolutely disastrous. What was she thinking? The most effective thing she can do is tip over a wine glass, and she thought she could take on whatever this thing is? Idiot idiot idiot. Utterly humiliating. And she felt like shit.
What a great day...

Hanna was pissed. She was so close to being stacked on cash, she could have moved herself and her mom out of that dump of an apartment. The job was suppose to be simple, at around 12 in the morning, Hanna and a few others were to sneak in from the top of the store, mission impossible style. They had a computer expert, who was able to disable the security system of the entire store. Hanna would shove as many expensive looking things into her backpack as she could. Everything cold had went as planned, but no, something bad had to happen, like a rat in the group that sold them all out the moment they stepped out of the store. And that why Hanna was now in the back of a police cruiser, contemplating her life decisions. And that's when her hands sparked up, literally. Her hands started producing sparks for a good 10 seconds.
"Alright, I'll just pretend that didn't happen" Hanna whispered before she decided to go to sleep, for the ride would be long.

“....You have to….Save them….”
Hanna woke up slowly after she heard that. And then heard screams. Not the "I'm getting married!" screams, more like the bloody murder type of screams. Hanna shot up, and was greeted to a monster. She then saw a girl with blonde hair scream "Nien!" Like it was a battle cry. Hanna forced herself to calm down and Analyze the situation. Their was a giant lion demon, a kid under him, a girl that looked two seconds away from taking a lil nap on the unstable ground, and don't forget the German who had leaped in the air to try and damage the beast.
"yeah, I should just dip, just leave Hanna, you don't even know these people so why are you contemplating even charging in there, which brings up the question...WHY AM I STILL HERE!" Hanna frowned, and checked her pockets. All she had was a wallet with nothing in it, perfect.
"GOD DAMMIT!"
Hanna would shout as she ran in with nothing in her hands. Hanna wanted to go for the kid, but didn't know how to approach the situation. She did notice that the other people fighting the beast were throwing rocks at it, but Hanna had a feeling that did nothing. She needed something sharp, something with a little point to it...like a broken broom with a nice jagged end to it. Hanna would pick up broom, and throw it at the beasts head with all of her strength, hoping to hit it's eye or something.

Nora Glass
"Why struggle?"

location: somewhere new

condition: disoriented

tags: none

outfit: baggy sweater, sweatpants

Nora's tongue clung to the roof of her mouth like someone had mounted velcro to it. She was disoriented, somewhat dizzy. Strangely, she was also freezing cold.

And towering before her: a monster.

She had seen things like it before. Dozens, even hundreds of times. But always on the other side of a screen. This was, as far as she could tell, horrifyingly real. There were no hotkeys for this, no macros. No up, up, down, down, left, right...

She knew she should be running. That ancient, animalistic part of her brain was screaming that, of fight or flight, flight was clearly the better option. Darwin be damned. She was no fool, no weak link in the evolutionary chain.

Then why did her feet feel so rooted to the ground?

She couldn't shake the memory of that voice. Saying that she had to save them. No one had told her what to do since before her sister was born. Since before... everything, she supposed. And God, she resented whoever or whatever was trying to tell her what to do now. But there were bystanders. Innocents. She couldn't bring herself to care about the majority of them, but damn it, some of them were kids. You only had to watch one kid die to know that you never, ever wanted to see it again.

And to know that you would hate yourself for letting it happen.

The cold she felt was deeper, now, crawling up her arms like hundreds of spiders formed from solid ice. It took her a moment to register that it was happening again, the phenomenon she had witnessed before being whisked away to wherever here was. Her fingers going translucent, disappearing. But it was different this time. Rather than feeling like she was losing something, there was a feeling of profound growth. Of control. Like a million tiny threads connected to a million tiny puppets. She knew she could manipulate them, some deep rooted instinct kicking in. But wasn't instinct the byproduct of generation upon generation of experience? Why did she find such knowledge within herself now? Was it simply adrenaline, convincing her that she had some semblance of an idea of what she was doing?

She didn't know. And she didn't have time to figure out.

The sound that came out of her was a desperate noise, a roar broken by a sharp crack in her voice, pitching it upwards in a sound more akin to prey than predator. But she moved, and quickly. Her arms mostly dissolved into minute particulate, she rushed forward, a twist in her gut as she moved the air around her at unnatural speeds, a blade of wind gusting toward the beast before her.

And then the realization really hit her. There would be no respawn if everything went wrong. This was hardcore mode.

This was also, though, a chance. And she would be damned if she didnt take it.

Kanno Akio

"Himari, you won't grow up properly if you keep skipping dinner!" Kanno was amid dumping his little sister's entire plate into a plastic container. After dumping her food, Kanno left it in the fridge along with the dozens of other breakfasts, lunches, and dinners he made for Himari, all stacked tightly. Kanno shut the fridge as if this were normal, whistling a little tune as he left the kitchen.

"I'm sorry, Kanno, I'm just not that hungry!" a shrill voice replied. Kanno couldn't help but smile at his little sister. Ever since he lost memory, she's been the only thing that kept him going. He told her it was fine, reaching out to pat her head. His hand fell short, though, and he remembered that Himari doesn't enjoy being touched. He couldn't blame her, not since the incident. Instead, he warmly smiled as she scurried around a corner. Kanno sat himself at the desk, turned on his computer, and let some music play. He stretched his fingers and opened up the 50th page of his notebook, small enough to fit in his pocket. Lines would form and shapes would take place.

Himari sat on his bed, kicking her feet impatiently. Satisfied, Kanno pointed at one character and said, "Look, Himari, it's you!"

She jumped from the bed and ran up to the desk, standing on her toes to just barely see it. "Wow! Since when did big bro get so talented?"

He laughed in response. "I'm glad you think that of your 'talented big bro'!"

Kanno closed the notebook, leaving it in his pocket. He stood up and yawned, shutting his eyes tightly for a second or two. However, opening his eyes did not reveal his messy apartment room. There wasn't even a building he recognized. All there was were screams, destruction, and one massively ugly beast. No, no, no, he thought to himself. A dream. This is a dream. Nothing more. But the cries, the putrid air... it all felt so real. Only now did Kanno panic, his breath quickening like never before, coupled with a few hiccups. He took a step back, his foot getting bent at an awkward angle thanks to the rubble. He yelped a little as he almost fell but quickly regained footing. "What... What is..?" It was all happening so fast, it was difficult for a laid back person such as himself to get a grip. Why did a girl shout "Nein" at it so carelessly? Then there were about four women moving in to attack the horrid beast. Just what was—

"Big bro?" A voice called out, making his eyes widen in horror.

"No..." he muttered. He turned around to see Himari, standing among the wreckage behind him, scared for her life. He hated seeing her like this. And here he was, cowering just as much as his little sister. First, he calmed his breathing, shouting to her, "Stay back, Himari!" But looking back at the monster, it became clear that running would be pointless. But what were they supposed to even do against it? Think, Kanno, think! "The swords! Yes!" he suddenly exclaimed. Without thinking, he ran over to the monster and stopped at a fair distance.

Taking some deep breaths, he raised his arm at the creature. Wait, no, he skipped a step! Kanno clenched his fist for about five seconds, and when he let go a regular sword had formed beside his hand, floating in the air. He flicked his wrist up, and the sword levitated as if an unseen force grabbed it. Then he thrust himself forward, and the blade flew across the air... decently enough. It scratched the beast's hip, and Kanno cursed himself for the horrendous aim.

The monstrosity's head snapped towards Frederika as she released a desperate cry. It raised a clawed hand to counter the threat a beat too slow, and the street sign collided against its skull with a deafening metallic clang. The beast staggered back several steps with a low rumble. The child underneath screeched and shielded his head with feeble arms as the monster's heavy footfalls avoided trampling him by mere centimeters. Before it could recover its composure, a large rock hurled through the air and cuffed its temple. Droplets of blood splattered across the concrete beneath, but the damage hardly seemed to deter it. Releasing a furious roar, the monster bared its claws and brought it slamming down towards where Frederika would land. Regardless of whether the strike connected, the beast turned towards the other offenders. Several rocks and a broken broom came flying, but its long, metallic tail whipped forward and effortlessly knocked them all out of the air. The blade that grazed its hip hardly broke skin and went unnoticed as the beast set its eyes on Nora. As she charged, it rushed forward to meet her halfway. The sharp gusts released from her dissipated arms were unseen, but the beast, as though keenly aware of the danger, leaped up with startling swiftness. It twisted its hind end midair and brought its tail cracking down towards Nora. The impact of its landing created cracks spider webbing across the ground and burst of wind that would knock any unsteady feet down.

The beast bared its teeth, saliva dripping as it prowled about its preys. It seemed to pinpoint Kanno and Adrian as the ones that managed to harm it, and after a beat, it narrowed its eyes. Without any further preamble, it lunged towards Adrian with another roar. Ravyn and the cowering child laid in its path, but they were of no concern in its eyes as it pounced forward with bared claws.

As she charged, it rushed forward to meet her halfway. hashimoto kiyoshi
scroll!

It had been a long and, frankly, exhausting day. The only redeeming thing about it was that his father had not deigned to sit in on Kiyoshi's training today, which meant that he was spared an extra trip to his first-aid kit to clean and bandage wounds from Daichi's blade, but his own self-discipline, commitment to his studies, and fear that his father would be secretly observing meant that Kiyoshi pushed himself just as hard as he would have otherwise. The manifestation of a power nobody could understand was simply another art that he would have to perfect, not unlike his calligraphy or swordsmanship.

But he was a little—off, all of today. A single phrase kept circling again and again in his mind, the words and voice unfamiliar alike. "...You have to... save them..."

The worst part was that he could remember no context about the sentence at all. It seemed to him equally possible that he heard it two decades ago when he was an infant, and that he heard it just yesterday. He had no idea who spoke it or who he was supposed to save.

Upon entering the Hashimoto mansion, Kiyoshi leaned heavily against one wall. His muscles ached from hours of continuous training, and he felt drained, both mentally and physically, thoughts wafting again to that strange voice and its imperative. He scarcely realized that his eyes had drifted closed—

The stability against his shoulder disappeared, and Kiyoshi stumbled, just barely catching himself as his eyes snapped open in surprise. His hand flew to grip his sword's hilt. He was no longer inside his family's estate, that much was clear, but he was much more uncertain about where he was then where he wasn't. The streets were not ones that he'd before traveled, the buildings not ones he'd previously entered, but he had little time to try and put the pieces of an increasingly confusing puzzle together before the sky split open and a monster—for there was no other way to describe it than that—claws its way out. It was the likes of which he'd never seen.

Something warm pulsed on the side of his neck, and instinctively, Kiyoshi slapped a hand over it. His marking, that strange symbol that'd appeared on his skin the day his power manifested. It must have something to do with all—this.

He regretted to admit that he froze, the moment the beast's head swung around to glare at him. All that training, and he could do nothing but stand there like a fool, hand uselessly gripping his sword as if Tombogaēri could bring down this nightmare, ten meters tall and with a mouthful of fangs that each seemed as long as his blade.

It was fortunate that, at that moment, a tall blonde lunged for the monster, battle cry ripping from her throat, and a rock followed to slam against the monster's temple. Kiyoshi's attention was diverted from the rest of the battle by a terrified cry as a child cowered beneath the monster's feet, and his heart leapt into his throat when the beast avoided crushing the child by mere centimeters.

Still, it seemed enraged. It set its eyes on one of the two who'd been hurling rocks at it and barreled towards them, and it was at this point that Kiyoshi finally broke from his paralysis. The red-headed girl was unfortunately too far away from the child for him to help her in time, but she was both older and more capable of defending herself, so he wasted no time in slamming both gloved hands into the ground, a portal opening up below the child to transport him as far from the chaos as Kiyoshi could muster.

"Move!" he shouted, in case they had—like him—frozen in the face of impending danger.

At this point, the beast was too close, and Kiyoshi's control not precise enough, to guarantee that it would also not be swallowed and transported alongside either person if he tried to portal them away, but he unsheathed his katana and swung it in a long, silvery arc into an entrance portal he'd conjured. The blade reappeared far away from himself, steel emerging from a portal that was hopefully close enough to the monster to break skin across its face.

Elise Friedhelm.

Cerulean eyes carefully studied the cracked pithos sitting innocently in one corner of the dusty, cramped shed of an antique store. Every so often, her pencil glided elegantly over her clipboard, giving the girl the image of a picture perfect honor student. Unlike her grumpy classmate, she was working diligently to do Professor Kikuchi proud—or so it seemed. A closer look at the crisp sheets of lined paper revealed a chaotic tangle of notes riddled with question marks, evidence of the ash blonde’s significant uncertainty.

Elise considered herself to be a student with few traits to complain about. She wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, sure, but she made sure to put in that extra mile of effort, didn’t she? But this assignment—if you could even call it that—was something that even a girl well known for being as docile as a lamb found difficult to sit down for, especially not while obediently nodding her head without questioning its existence. In her defense, she was at least trying. After all, history was an important subject in regards to improving upon the innovations and mistakes of their predecessors. It was just difficult to understand what that had to do with staring at pieces of old pottery and shrapnel all day.

Thus, when the familiar, hair-raising shrieks of the alert system installed in their mobile phones flooded the vicinity, the surprise in Elise's eyes were glazed with a hint of relief, a relief which deepened further upon her friend's suggestion that they leave. Perhaps if it had been a different assignment, the ash blonde may have given one or two words of dissent towards Cleo's clear lack of intention to complete the report at all. Instead, she offered a silent apology to Professor Kikuchi and the shopkeep while sending an SOS text to Jun that Cleo might do something reckless at Raevedel Square. In the meantime, her mind came up with all manners of excuses. It wasn't like Cleo would listen to her protests, and two heads were better than one, right? She was just looking out for the safety of a precious teammate. It was a completely logical course of action that wasn't shameful in the slightest.

The regrets were almost instant.

Like a chick following a hen, Elise had blindly followed Cleo out of the antique store with her clipboard abandoned and her deactivated shield slung over her shoulder. However, the moment she spotted the girl seated on a stray motorcycle, her face paled slightly.

“Cleo, I don't th-” the words had barely left her mouth when the gray-haired girl tested the engine and instructed her to "get on and hold tight." Like the perfectly sensible child she was, Elise not only swallowed back her unspoken words but also obediently seated herself right behind Cleo.

This isn't larceny. We're just borrowing it for an emergency. This isn't theft. We just accidentally might have to permanently borrow it. This is okay. It's okay. Such thoughts looped infinitely like a mantra as a weak source of comfort. She subconsciously tightened her hold on Cleo the moment they hit the road, a meager attempt to transmit her worries to her friend.

“I’m sorry…” Elise said weakly to the absent mystery owner of the motorcycle. When she heard what she assumed was said owner's cry, she closed her eyes in self-reflection. “I’m very sorry…” If the motorcycle managed to survive through Cleo’s very much illegal maneuvers and the incoming battle, she promised to do her absolute best to make sure it found its way back to its rightful owner.

Though bearing these thoughts in mind en route to Raevedel Square, her promise was all but remembered in the face of the heart-dropping scene before her. The fight had already started, but not in the way she had expected. The professional hunters were nowhere to be seen with a small group of poorly unarmed civilians facing the monster in their stead. Were they insane? Elise herself couldn’t say much considering she also wasn’t licensed to deal with such monstrosities, but at the very least she was armed to face such creatures.

By the time the two drew close enough to feel the monster’s roar reverberate through the air, Elise finally realized why a group of untrained kids roughly her age had remained to fight the Poex. There was a child in their midst, likely one who had been unlucky enough to fall right in the monster’s path. Fortunately, while there was still no time to stop and admire the group’s valiant efforts, a boy with teal hair had already safely warped the child well out of the monster's range. However, the same couldn't be said for the safety of a redhead who was collapsed on the floor.

“Watch out!” Elise cried out, practically leaping off of the motorcycle. However, the monster was far faster than her. By the time she had her shield deployed and ready, the Poex had already pounced. Not one to be deterred by thoughts of nonexistent what ifs and too lates, the ash blonde pivoted around her heel and used the spin’s momentum to send her shield sailing towards the behemoth in hopes that it would land somewhere in between the girl and the Poex.

The moment she heard the harsh clang of metal hitting cobblestone, Elise quickly drew up a small, dome-shaped boundary from wherever her shield landed. She wasn’t entirely sure if her haphazardly formed barrier would even last a single hit, but there was no time to worry about anything other than the next action.

“I’ll try my best to help distract the Poex for now,” she told Cleo before running off to where her shield had landed. If her friend needed her for anything else, she was sure to give her a signal.

| Minako Watanabe |

"I just can't catch a fucking break."

All Minako wanted to do was go on a walk. She didn't have much free time until recently, so a stroll every once in a while had become a sort of ritual for her on days where she was more stressed than usual. It seemed that after today's events, she would be walking for a very... long time. In front of her was a small assault team of sorts, dealing with a massive beast that had fallen out of the sky and was now snarling menacingly. Rocks were being thrown, along with what seemed to be a broken broomstick. The only thing that she really saw that could qualify as "tactics" was one boy who had procured a sword somehow. Mina considered for a moment. Did she really want to spend her time fighting this monster right now?

Heh. What a stupid question.

Without hesitation, Minako unsheathed the handgun that she kept strapped to her leg, taking aim at the creature in front of her. Before she could begin firing, however, it staged its own attack, likely at least a little pissed off from having a bunch of rocks thrown in its face. "MOVE!" Another voice shouted, drawing her attention towards another boy who had opened a portal and slashed through, attempting to slice the monster. Movement was everywhere on the battlefield, with a blonde girl lunging in front of a slumped redhead, in an effort to protect her from the attacking monster.

Damn, I'm glad I'm not the only one here right now. Cocking the gun, Mina smirked and took aim, with the intent of striking the monster's eye. Can't attack nearly as well when you're half blind. Prior to firing off her rounds, she shouted out a quick warning to the people in front of her.

"HEY! If you don't want a bullet in your brain, get outta my line of fire!"

The impact of the street sign with the monster's head felt satisfying, and for a brief second, a small smile appeared on Frederika's face as she watched the creature stumble backwards. Ja, ja! THIS is what I am meant to be doing with my ability. For the first time in a long while, her actions left her feeling good, and as she landed, she was already preparing for a second strike. Now, press the attack-

At that moment, Frederika's complete lack of combat experience laid itself bare as she failed to anticipate the beast's counterattack. With nothing to ward it off, the massive paw came screaming down at her completely unexpected, slamming straight into her and tearing into her flesh with its claws. The beast's attack drove her straight into the ground with a massive crash, spraying chunks of pavement as it cratered the road beneath. Letting out a scream of pain through gritted teeth, she began to feebly jab at the creature's paw with her improvised weapon in a desperate attempting to extricate herself from the goring attack while waves of pain coursed through her being. In the end, it was less her actions and more the continued assault by the others that eventually freed her, as the monstrosity moved to engage those fellow outsiders who had been hurling missiles at it.

Frederika dragged herself out the small crater, letting loose another anguished grunt as she struggled to prop herself up, signpost now acting as an ad-hoc support as she found her footing. Her outfit was now torn nearly in half at the waist, her blouse now sporting a series of wicked claw marks oozing red across her abdomen, dripping downwards to soak into the knife-pleats of her formerly consummate uniform skirt. In all her years of athletic competition and grueling training, she had never felt pain quite like what she bore now, and it intensity of it all very nearly side-lined her. But as adrenaline flowed into her veins, and her symbol continued to glow dimly, she forced herself to block out the pain; there was still a monster on the loose, and they were far from victory yet.

The blonde girl gripped the street sign with renewed vigor, now regarding her opponent a bit more cautiously. Purely attacking wasn't going to yield a win: this thing was too large and too strong to just beat it to death no matter how many sticks and rocks they pelted it with. This was going to take a combined assault, and as she saw a dark haired girl draw a gun and paint a bead on the monster's head, her rapidly working mind began to formulate a plan. She set off at a dash again, her first steps uneven as the damage she had taken earlier threw her off her normal stride, but soon her earlier speed returned, and if any cared to look, it would appear she was looping around behind the shield Elise had previously thrown. The timing was going to be tricky on this, and she REALLY didn't want to catch a bullet in the process, but...

"Entschuldigung!" she shouted an apology as she planted a foot hard into the ground directly behind where Ravyn was crouched, launching herself upwards over the red-haired girl and onto the beginning slope of the barrier's dome. Her next footfall quickly rebounded upwards again to land herself on the opposite slope of the barrier, and in a completion of the world's strangest triple jump, her legs pushed off as hard as they could from their purchase, propelling her again straight for the beast's face. But whereas before she'd merely been swinging for the fences, trying to do anything she could to drive the beast back, this time she held the metal support of the sign straight out from her like a spear, its point (if the jagged end of a steel support could be called such) now aimed straight for the enemy. If the girl with the gun could take out one eye, then maybe, just maybe, her desperate attack could take out the other.

Ravyn was only half aware of the things that were happening. She couldn't see straight, and her pounding head drowned out all noise. This was so stupid. She was so stupid. Whatever is happening here, she's going to be seen as weak and helpless. The monster was charging at her, that she knew for sure. Something was blocking her from it's rage. There was so much happening, so much chaos around her. That blond girl just literally jumped over her. Was she ok? Mentally and physically? Did anyone else know what they were doing? She had to stay strong. She had to stay conscious. Ravyn willed herself to her feet, and, armed only with pepper spray, faced the monster. People seemed to be aiming for the face. Ravyn took a deep breath and pressed the button, sending a stream of pain in mist form at the creature's face.
Why am I so stupid? Is this *all* I can do? Everyone else seems so much more... equipped. What am I even doing with my life??

This was a terrible idea. Sure, Adrian's attack - if it could even be deemed as such - had some sort of impact on the beast, seemingly drawing blood, but it was at best a minor annoyance. And now, he'd made it made. Unsurprisingly, Adrian reflected, his idiocy seemed crystal clear with a building-size behemoth barreling towards him. Once again, this was a terrible idea. Adrian's breath caught in his throat as the creature approached, its malicious gaze trained directly on him. He barely managed to notice that he wasn't the only one in immediate danger. Both the child from before and rock-girl, who seemed to have brought down by something, lay in directly in its warpath.

Adrian nearly tripped over his own feet - which, he realized, were still carrying him towards to beast - at the realization. Had his attempts to help only caused more trouble? He slowed his pace as he frantically tried to think of something, anything, to help here. Nothing. He had no plan, only a monster out of his worst nightmares and several impending deaths. And then, salvation appeared. An... opening? Gateway? Portal? Whatever it was, something appeared below the boy and, almost as if like magic - though, some small voice in the back of Adrian's head recognized, it quite possibly was - the boy vanished as if he was never there to begin with.

"Move!"

Deciding to listen to this voice and its agreeable order, Adrian picked up the pace again, this time moving towards rock-girl, who appeared to be frozen in shock. A reasonable reaction, he supposed. In fact, it was more unusual that Adrian was still able to think, albeit in a very panicked, half-baked way. Either way, now there was only one person in between him and the creature, and it was approaching far too quickly to think about it. Instead, Adrian threw all his instincts out the window into a pile of nuclear waste and set fire to the lot of it. Too late to turn back now.

He raced forward, legs burning and lungs straining, only to make a rather mortifying misstep. Literally, in this case. His right foot slammed down atop a small pebble, one that would usually be disregarded. However, at his speed and in his heightened state of panic, it proved disastrous. Adrian slipped and fell, instinctively shielding himself with his arms. Adrian slammed into the ground with a harsh cry, the fragmented rock and broken glass cutting deeply into his forearms and legs. He rolled twice before coming to a stop, dazed and in pain.

He lay there for a moment, trying to gather his wits about him until the angry roar of the beast rang out once more. No. He struggled to scramble up to his feet, wincing as his numerous cuts dripped dark blood. A sudden bout of pain from his left foot brought him down again. Oh. Adrian's ankle was all the wrong shades of purple, and swollen to such an extent that even he could recognize it was bad. He swore under his breath and trying (and failing) to stand again. But he already knew it was too late anyways. He was too late. The monster was almost there, almost to the girl. And Adrian was still too far to make it in time. And, once again, a miracle. A massive shield sailed out of nowhere and slammed into the ground in front of her, acting as a wall to protect her from the monster, already so close. To top it all off, gunshots. Someone had a gun. Huh. After everything he'd seen today, a girl with a gun taking potshots at a ten meter tall behemoth barely even phased him anymore.

Now the blonde girl from earlier - looking far worse for the wear - charged again at the beast, still wielding that street sign. Well, shit. That seemed dangerous. Something. There had to be something he could do, even while in this state. Think. Think. Adrian frowned and reached out with both hands. Well, this probably wouldn't do much, but hey, surely any effort would be better than none. He felt forwards, extending that indescribable, incorporeal sense he had towards to flank of the beast. Adrian located that devastating tail. He'd seen what it could do before and the deftness with which the monster wielded it with. He inhaled deeply and focused on it, pushing down on it as hard as he could.

Oh, God, this hurt. Adrian grew faint as he intensified the force of gravity on the tail as much as he could physically bear and then some. Blood dripped from his nose. This was leagues above the soda cans and cardboard boxes he'd once practiced with. But this would keep its tail down and away from sign-girl who, he managed to notice through the haze of dark spots and flashing lights, had leapt onto the shield and jumped at the beast. Adrian redoubled his efforts. Blood flowed more freely.

Nora Glass
"Why struggle?"

location: somewhere new

condition: disoriented

tags: none

outfit: baggy sweater, sweatpants

Abruptly, Nora found herself on the ground as the creature's movement sent shockwaves through it. Arms whole once more and braced against the pavement, her heart raged against her ribcage like a caged animal. It was so close. She thought she could smell cloying, fetid breath but who knew? Her senses were a blur, panic driving everything up to 11 and drowning her in a mire made of both the real and unreal.

Someone yelling. An order. Move. Gunfire. It was all so much. She had spent so long alone, her only company ink on page or pixel on screen. The noise, the movement, was overwhelming. She couldn't breathe, she COULDN'T FUCKING BR-

And then silence. All senses null and void, save for a sense of expansion, of space occupied. She was gone.

"I am everything and nothing all at once."

Her own voice, while not audible in the technical sense, seemed almost deafening as it reverberated in her mind. What was that, even? Some saying she had read? A line in a book of poetry, a platitude posted online after having been layered over a stock photo of trees in the wind?

While she herself was not fully conscious of what had occurred, observers would have seen a girl, cowering, and then suddenly gone in a spray of mist that spread over the makeshift battleground. And then, just as suddenly, the girl reappeared, disoriented and confused, in the same position she had been but several yards away, her body knitting itself back together from particles of fog. She was now perched at the very edge of the space that the blinding mist had occupied.

Her breath came in ragged gasps, the air seeming to scrape against her newly reformed throat. Part of her recognized she should be glad that she was safe, but damn it, she had felt so in control before. What happened if she panicked again, and that time couldn't find a way to pull herself back together? It hadn't been easy. It was like throwing millions of puzzle pieces to the wind, and then gathering them up and piecing them together again all in the span of a few moments. She was capable, yes. But it exhausted her.

What had she become?

Hanna cursed when her broken broom was slapped out of the air. It was a beautiful attempt, but sadly it had failed. But on the bright side, someone had teleported the kid away from the monster, which was good. And now someone was shooting at the monster, which made this even better.
"Alright, things are a little better, now think..." Hanna told herself. She looked around, she want to find something...anything useful. and all she found was a bottle of rum.
"wow...I actually hate my life," Hanna sighed. She would open the bottle, and take a little sip, immediately spitting the stuff out. "Holy shit that's strong!" Hanna exclaimed. Then she had a bright idea. Hanna would hold her hand out, and concentrate. A few sparks would fly from her hand, perfect. Now Hanna just had to get the perfect angle on the bitch. The German seemed to be trying the same attack again, this time from the rear end of the beast "alright, broom didn't work, now we see if burning it will, god I hope this works..." Hanna said before YEETING the bottle at the beast, the bottle would shatter on the beasts back, and it's contents now splashed all over the beasts body. Then Hanna would concentrate, sparks now coming out of both of her hands at a rapid rate.
"I don't need sparks..I need FUCKING FIRE!" Hanna yelled. as if on command, a small fire ball would form in her hands, not big enough to harm the beast, but hot enough to light some alcohol. Hanna would marvel at her creation for a few seconds before throwing it at the monster. The alcohol would light quickly, spreading faster than you could say yeet.
"And now I pray that girl can shoot like hawkeye..." Hanna sighed.

Ravyn’s mind was clearing and her focus snapped to clarity. If they wanted to defeat this beast, they’d need to work together. She spun around when she heard Adrian’s cry. The cute guy was down. The monster must have taken him out by some psychic shockwave or whatever. She flipped an errant red curl out of her eyes and ran over. She quickly checked her reflection in her watch face. She still looked pretty good, even through what had happened. Was she being petty? Eh. Impressing a guy was impressing a guy, battlefield or no. She was fairly frantic and her head was still pounding, but she kept a calm demeanor.
“ Come on. Save your strength. We’ve got to get out of the way of whatever the hell this thing is. “
She grabbed one of his arms and began dragging him out of the path of the charging beast. Being a base in cheer was finally paying off.
“Sorry if you were trying to do something, but I feel like surviving should be a top priority. “
Once a safe distance away, she pulled a small first aid kit out of her purse.
“ I’ve got bandaids, tweezers, antibacterial spray, and a little bit of medical wrap. Hope I can help. “
Ravyn tossed Adrian the first aid kit then dug back through her purse. Yes! It was still there! A lighter she’d gotten as a promotional item and never bothered to take out of her bag. Never had she been so glad to have so much random crap in her purse. She ran to the grunt of the battle whilst trying to stay out of the line of sight of the deadly behemoth. She attempted to start the lighter.
“ Come on Wells Fargo... don’t let me down now...”
A spark! A tiny flame! She held it in front of her pepper spray and pressed down on the trigger. The spray almost immediately turned to a fiery steam aimed at the beasts side.
“ Hot damn! I didn’t think this would work. WATCH OUT!! FIRE!!”

[/div] [/div] [/div] [div class=right] [div class=scroll] The SOS text from Elise had pinged Jun at a rather inconvenient time, yet his reaction had been almost instantaneously as the young man had leaped up from his chair, crammed two of the many remaining overpriced crepes on the table into his mouth, and muffled out a "sorry-I-have-to-go-duty-calls" before rushing off without a second glance to his visibly baffled friend.

The trouble, it seemed, was that the location of the incident lied in Raevedel Square. Based on the text from his fellow classmate, Elise and Cleo were already on their way to the Poex sighting, and a vague memory of a conversation they had made him reason that their location shouldn't be a great deal away from the Square. He, however, had been enjoying his last day with a friend on campus before the new semester officially started this week, and so a part of him wondered whether or not his best bet was to seek out Professor Kikuchi and ask for a hasty teleportation request. In the end, the weight of the matter outweighed the risk of wasting too much time on locating the professor, and so Jun was forced to sprint from the dormitory building, across the premise, past the front entrance of the prestigious hunters' academy, and ultimately track down a cab to hail.

It'd been a while since he last exerted this much energy in any activity outside of training and field lessons, and unfortunately, a nagging sensation in his chest told him that the taxi ride would only be a small break.

On the other hand, fortune seemed to either smile upon him or regard him with pity, and so he had been lucky enough to bring his backpack along as he had originally planned to venture out into the city later today. His weapon rested weightlessly within the confines of his bag, and the chains wrapped around his forearms underneath the long sleeves of his hoodie hardly rattled when he flung open the cab door.

"Raevedel Square, please! And floor it if you can!" came Jun's heaving, breathless voice as soon as he had thrown himself into the back seat of the cab. Despite his frantic expression, however, the driver ceased to budge from his seat, and the younger male couldn't help but release a strained groan at both the lack of motion as well as the look of confusion reflected toward him in the rear-view mirror. "You know, floor it... like, go really fast, but within safety limits. Just— just please get there as quick as you can and I'll pay extra. I promise. I'm begging."

By the time the cab screeched to a jarring stop several blocks down from the city square, Jun had already shoved his hand through the space in between the two front row seats with a wad of money, and as soon as the driver accepted the payment with enthusiasm and an expression of glee, he jumped out the door and onto the clean pavement of the city streets below.

One step out the car and almost instantaneously, the wave of panic in the air struck him.

Jun bursted into a frantic sprint, one hand clinging onto the strap over his shoulder to steady his backpack while the other stuffed his phone into his jacket pocket, and as he dashed down the street and maneuvered through the opposing traffic, a thunderous roar boomed through the air. The rumble beneath his feet pushed him to run faster and propelled him forward. Shop windows and panicked faces within the stampede fleeing the site blurred past him, and while the thickening of the crowd momentarily impeded his momentum, the young man managed to break past them, simultaneously shouting out directions and instructions for everyone to evacuate safely. It was, however, only when he reached the scene of destruction did the chaos finally, fully struck him, his chest pounding and filling with dread at the sight of the Poex that loomed over the square like a tyrant of destruction.

Jun's eyes swept the scene.

Aside from the civilians appeared a group of rather young individuals who, despite their age, were also combatting the Poex, and while he'd question why those of their calibre — visibly inexperienced, yet still wielding weapons — hadn't evacuated the civilians instead, the weight of the situation instead shifted his attention to fall upon on a pair of familiar individuals, each only a few yards away. Within seconds, his nimble body appeared beside Elise and the chains originally packed inside his bag and snaked around his forearms had now drawn outward to form two sets of long chains, both of which hovered shortly before lowering to lay beside his feet with its spearheads locked in striking position.

"Elise!" he called out toward his companion. It seemed like all the hunters' — or rather, the younglings' — target set sight on certain areas of the Poex, and while their inexperience tugged a feeling of concern in his chest, their efforts were noble, until a jet of flames surged from the hands of a young girl with red hair and it struck him what she attempted to do. Tender anatomical regions and sensory organs — the Poex needed to be injured and weakened first.

With a twitch of his hand to concentrate the charge in his hand, the section where the spearhead connected to his chain flew into his palm, and drawing his arm back with eyes squinted in concentration, Jun hurled the arrowhead through the air just as his body flipped in electromagnetic charge, repelling the chain and propelling it forward to aim for the eye of the Poex. Cleo Donovan

Location: Raevedel Square

The motorcycle arrived at Raevadel Square with a loud screech, rotated briefly 90 degrees before it halted completely from the overwhelming speed it was originally running on. As soon as they arrived, the piercing roar of the Poex entered their ears. The intense atmosphere was accompanied by the sight of the beast, its metallic tail whipping away everything thrown its way, angrier than ever. Elise was quick to jump off as soon as they arrived at the scene, her previous hesitance and anxiety over getting on a stolen motorcycle vanished when the sight of the battle entered her eyes. Indeed, Cleo was not expecting this wild of a scenario. However, what had shocked her was not the sight of the beast in itself, but the lack of professional hunters. The very realization that the people who were fighting against this monstrosity of a behemoth right now, are no one but a group of young people. Panicking. Inexperienced.

A level-C Poex, standing ten meters tall. Aside from the physical abilities it holds with its crushing strength and brutality, whether it has special powers or not are still unknown. Perhaps that’s the only thing she picked up from a lecture she usually pays no attention to, which is that Poex may sometimes evolve--or at least, have unnatural powers more than just mere brutal strength.

Cleo’s eyes narrowed, allowing her concern for this matter to linger in her head for a brief moment before her attention was quickly caught by the sight of a child sitting there frozen in fear under the belly of the monster. That’s why, huh. No wonder these people are fighting so vigorously. Nice courage, though.

In her mix of anxiety for the safety of these people and the child was the rising excitement and adrenaline pumping up inside of her. Elise’s words rang in her head, saying she’d try to distract the Poex for now, which would allow her a great opportunity to attack. Her eyes sparkled with a new light as she jumped off the motorcycle, ready to engage in the fight herself. She had her attention fixed on the child. Mini, white orbs formed an inch away from her palm. She leaned forward, ready to leap.

Huh?

In the blink of an eye, however, the child was gone. She halted right before she jumps.

Where did he go? Just as she was thinking, a small hand tugged on the bottom of her shirt. She looked down sideway to find the child that was originally below the Poex to be next to her, still collapsed on the ground, eyes swollen in tears. The boy was trembling.

Teleportation…? Cleo guessed briefly, momentarily glancing back at the small group of inexperienced fighters, taking the assumption that one of them had made the smart move of teleporting the child away. Just as she was thinking, the boy uttered a couple of words in complete stutters.

“...W-where is m-mommy…”

The girl blinked. She looked down at the child once more. Now that the incredible tension of trying to stay alive under the monster is over, the sense of relief was ready to explode in the boy in the form of tears.

That’s when she noticed the rest of the surroundings aside from the Poex. The couple of civilians too scared to move still scattered loosely around the square, some trying to hide behind bushes or make themselves as unnoticeable as ever. She felt her leg tightened by the grip of the boy who was already crying.

The civilians looked helplessly at her once they realized someone finally noticed their existence. The boy proceeded to blow his nose against her thigh.

Cleo scratched the back of her head, a dry smile lingered on her mouth with a raised brow. Glancing cautiously back at the Poex, it seemed that despite the group being completely inexperienced as a mess, they seemed to be developing tactics along the way, figuring out what to do as a team. She was eager to jump in, but not with a child hugging her leg and a bunch of civilians needing her help.

Finally, a sigh escaped from her as she realized what she had to do first.

---At the same time---

The mighty roar was replaced by a painful cry that pierced through the air as the Poex staggered backward from the sudden attack to its eyes. The rounds of bullets had proven to be a successful move in this mixture of panic, especially when just a moment ago a blade had attempted to break its skin. Despite the attempt being a weak one as the steel merely inflicted a small wound, it did briefly distract the Poex’s attention that it could not respond fast enough when the bullets collide against its face. They hit it in the eyes, with one aiming straight into its eyeballs. It shook its head vigorously from the pain. Raising its giant paws, its claws dug into the concrete ground as it struggled to regain its eyesight, yanking back with it blocks of debris as the ground had given way into giant cracks. The whole ground shuddered briefly.

Nonetheless, the Poex managed to get his posture back fast enough. New prey, it noticed when a girl was now seen jumping into the battle as well. There was something that the ash blond girl had that would prevent it from attacking her and whatever she’s protecting directly. However, the behemoth, now enraged, would just want to charge. It leapt forward in an attempt to pounce down. However, before it could do so, it caught sight of the human girl that it had slammed down earlier lunging towards it again with the jagged sharp end of the steel support from a street sign. With one eye already bleeding, the Poex was smart enough to retreat its track based on instinct in an attempt to defend itself. Its long metallic tail aimed to swing at the girl, only to realize that it had become harder to budge. It roared once more upon the realization that its tail was harder to work with right now, so it opened its mouth instead. Thick saliva trailed after its mighty fangs. Just as the steel end created a thin bloody cut on its eyeball, its head turned side-way and aimed forth to bite down hard on the girl in mid air once she had her attack.

But no. There could not be a casualty this soon.

Watch out!” Just as the Poex’s sharp fangs were about to snap onto the sign-girl, the sudden entrance of a powerful kick smacked the behemoth right across its left cheek. However, the kick was not ordinary, as a loud explosion was heard as soon as the foot made a collision with the beast’s skin, followed by a brief moment of white light and fire sparks that lingered into the air. Trails of smoke danced its way into the sky. Cleo landed herself onto the ground after the attack, watching as the Poex swayed to the right from the impact of its attack.

Glad she made it in time after evacuating the citizens.

It was obviously weakening, losing in strength. The need of the girl to pepper-spray the monster became temporarily unnecessary as the monster struggled to stand firm again with almost both eyes already almost blind.

Fury fueled inside of the monster with its lack of power to swing its metallic tail. The annoying sounds of human voices sounded like rats squeaking all around it. Then, it felt something shattering on its back, followed by growing hotness. It wanted to turn its head to get a view of what’s going on from instinct despite losing its eyesight, but that turned meaningless as one more attack of mysterious arrowheads against chains impaled the eye that already had a small cut into it. It growled, bitter cries thundered through the thick air. Sooner or later, however, as flame spread across its back, it became unnecessary for it to check visually itself to realize what’s going on. To make the matter worse, as soon as the alcohol dripped down its side a burst of flame also lit the rest of its body on fire. The combined actions of the girl who had thrown the alcohol bottle and the red-haired girl had proven to be rather successful in the final defeat of the monster. In the midst of pain, the Poex began to pounce around the square, slamming its paws down hard into the ground, swinging its claws at anything in its ways. Cleo was about to call out a girl who had suddenly disappeared like a spray of mist to beware of the danger from the monster’s desperate acts, but soon that didn’t look entirely needed as in one sudden moment, the monster stopped moving.

Its fur was burnt black, its face covered in wounds from steel and bullets. Its eyes were closed with trails of red blood trickling down its face. Despite standing still, all four limbs were trembling vigorously, as if it would collapse anytime soon.

The monster stood still. Silence followed. It seemed asleep. Almost as if it died standing firm.

Is it over..?

No.

It’s still breathing.

Cleo stood in front of the monster, her eyes observing the beast carefully. Then she noticed it--the quiet, red glow that the Poex was emitting.

The glow grew brighter and brighter, and finally, the Poex opened its eyes once more.

They were crimson. Bright, red eyes showed no signs of any wounds inflicted earlier. A burst of light, and new, dark fur covered its entire body, erasing any signs of burns that were shown earlier. As if mocking the crowd, it roared once more, so loud that they could feel the air vibrating with the monster’s revival. It stretched out its thick, metallic tail, to which it slammed down hard against the ground before whipping it in the air again.

....Shit, it healed.” Cleo grunted, furrowing her brows. So the monster did have special ability. Healing power. She hates that the most.

The Poex gave no time for the rest of the group to recover. With its revival came the previous memories of these inferior tiny creatures, its prey, inflicting on it dozens of wounds and pain. The Poex began to pose--like a cat, it bent its forebody down as if ready to charge. With that few moments of rest, its body had begun to regain its energy in addition to healing itself. It’s coming back stronger than ever.

The situation’s turning dire. No way would the group be able to fight it again.

Boom!

Raising both hands, two large white orbs took form briefly underneath the Poex’s chin before combining together into a giant explosion in an attempt to flick the Poex backward just as it was about to pounce. The Poex fell back from the impact, agitated. Then, it shook itself, breathing harshly, claws digging into the ground once more. Using this time to reassess the situation, Cleo called out.

All of you, get away from here! Jun, help evacuate them. The girl with the street-sign, she’s wounded. Elise, form a barrier between them and us. I’ll hold the Poex off during this time. Don’t worry about me. The teachers should be here soon.

Dozens of white orbs formed in the air as she said so, each the size of a human head as they surrounded the Poex. They exploded every time the Poex came into physical contact with them, and another identical orb would replace where the orb had previously exploded. It was almost a weird attempt to prevent the Poex from moving comfortably on its own will. Sweat formed into little droplets rolling down the side of her head, her body felt hot, if not growing sore. Exhaustion often came quicker when she used too much of her power at once.

Damn it. She needs more training.

Just as the numbers of orbs began to lessen as she felt herself reaching a limit, a smirk danced its way back onto her lips as she saw the two approaching figures from afar. She leapt back to where the rest of the crew is just as all orbs vanished into thin air following her own removal of the power. “Cover me,” she said briefly to Elise to be shielded as well.

Then she grinned, looking back at the battle field with the two newest arrivals.

The teachers’ here.

Mitra.

Do golems suffer from boredom? Mitra himself wasn’t entirely sure. After all, his sister, Two, had been the only intelligent counterpart of their batch, and the sum of their interactions had totaled less than a dozen. However, the incessant itch to keep himself busy, a juxtaposition to his desire to conserve energy, could only be described as what humans called “boredom”.

No sooner had Mitra ruminated on that thought than a familiar set of two words screeched out from his mobile device. The moment he heard “emergency action”, a rare trace of contempt flashed through his eyes. To any another, the alert may have well been a godsend excuse to cut their idleness short; to a golem who disapproved of his own purpose of creation, it was merely another order which he desperately hoped he wouldn’t get dragged into doing. Unfortunately, there was no higher entity above that heard his prayers.

Not even five minutes after he decided to stubbornly remain stock still in his chair, his phone rang once again, this time displaying the name “Renelle Assisi” on its brightly lit screen. Though the metronomic tone of the incoming call was on its second ring, Mitra made no move to retrieve the device from his desk. FInally, upon the 4th ring, the golem begrudgingly pressed his index finger down on the green button and swiped right.

“No matter how bad you are with technology, I’m not buying the excuse that you couldn’t find the pick up button for the 60th time.” The sharp voice on the other end immediately took to scolding the golem’s lack of promptness. In response, Mitra simply nodded in silence, which was soon followed by an exasperated sigh from Renelle. Both knew that his silence was not consent but rather a complete disregard for her words. Ignoring her phone calls was something akin to a ritual at this point, for the woman seldom ever called for anything but monster subjugations.

“There are other-”

Before he could finish his words, Renelle immediately cut in: “An acquaintance told me she spotted two second generation students speeding towards the square on a motorcycle.”

Mitra’s mouth drew taut into a grim line. He could almost even hear the adamant “you’re going” threaded into her words. Giving a terse “okay”, he cut the call and stiffly walked out the door with what little preparations he needed to make for his transportation issues.

Fortunately, he had a destination in mind. However, by the time he was finished fumbling with his phone, he was already nearing the place he had in mind. Nevertheless, he entered a certain unfamiliar string of numbers and waited for the sound which confirmed the other side had picked up the call.

“Kikuchi? If you’re heading to Raevedel Square for your students, please allow me to accompany you.”

The break before Vehemen Academy's new semester was quickly drawing to a close. Never one to wait things out until the last minute, Eiichi already finished all the preparations needed for the first day of classes—extra notebooks, pencils, and whatever else students might need were in the classroom, contact information of students and staff were updated, the first few lesson plans were drafted, and he personally made several trips to the academy to make sure all training equipment maintenance was up-to-date.

With everything in place, Eiichi took the time to sit back in his room with a newly purchased manga in hand (if anyone asked, he would say that his students badgered him to read it—which was really only half the truth). He absently picked up his cup of freshly brewed chrysanthemum tea and noted the time. Around now, his students should be at the antique store that he assigned them to go to for their history report. A mixed expression of disdain and amusement crossed Eiichi's features as he remembered Cleo's endless complaints about "this stupid assignment," and promises of how she'd "butcher the paper or just never complete it."

If he was being honest, he never planned to assign the report over break, but it became a necessity after the incident a years ago. With the timing of the event, the beginning of the second generation's sophomore semester was pushed back, and investigations into the academy led to frequent cancellation of classes. And still a thorn at Eiichi's side, the teachers that... Fell victim to the attack (not dead. Not until they find her body. Not until he sees-) left a vacant spot in their respective classes. The replacements that were hired in a rush were hardly qualified, or even certified, for the job. In short, none of the teachers were able to cover the materials intended for the students that particular year, and Eiichi decided to compensate for that with this impromptu report. Admittedly, not his most well-planned assignment, but he has known the antique shop owner for years, and the old man offered to "tell those young kiddos all about our kingdom's treasured artifacts!" after hearing about Eiichi's troubles. He didn't have high expectations, but as long as they could just connect what they learned about the antiques to what he'd managed to teach them in their shortened school year-

A muted, high-pitched voice from outside interrupted his train of thought, quickly followed by the incessant beeping from his phone. Eiichi released a sigh and gingerly set down his cup and book. All too familiar with the routine at this point, he blocked out the aggravating robotic announcements and checked the location on his phone. In the same moment, a call came in from- Ah. Speak of the devil. In this case, Cleo.

Already anticipating how the call will go, Eiichi picked up.

"Hel-"

“Hello? Eiich---Professor Kikuchi? I’m dropping this report. I’ll meet ya there.”

...Of course she would. Eiichi suppressed the urge to ignore the call for Hunters altogether and massaged the bridge of his nose. If a student of his was going to be there, then all the more reason why he had to go. As exasperating as they can be, he didn't fancy the idea of having a student (another-) dying on his watch a day before the semester began. And really, he shouldn't be surprised that the girl would ignore orders and rush into a battle without supervision, but that didn't stop the irritation from bubbling up in his chest. Hopefully, hopefully Elise and Junhwa would be more sensible.

Just as Eiichi was about to bring himself into his pocket space, his phone trilled again. Mitra's name on the caller ID had him raising an eyebrow. His colleague never struck him as the social type, and Eiichi himself preferred solitude over any company. Eiichi liked Mitra's unobtrusive personality well enough, but their relationship was little more than one of business. He could only assume that the call was about the Poex.

“Kikuchi? If you’re heading to Raevedel Square for your students, please allow me to accompany you.”

Eiichi paused and let out another sigh. Seemed like everyone expected him to go.

“Professor Mitra. Give me a minute.”

Without waiting for a response, Eiichi entered his pocket space, effectively cutting off the connection, and moved towards the direction of the school building. Before long, he stopped roughly where he assumed the entrance would be and exited. Mitra was a few paces away, so Eiichi strode up to him and offered a curt nod.

“If you don’t mind,” Eiichi said, and tapped Mitra's shoulder to bring him along into his pocket space.

Going in and out of the pocket came as easily as breathing for Eiichi, but moving within it? Not quite. He considered the direction of Raevedel Square and its distance, then took careful steps forward. Distance inside the space was distorted, but years of experimenting taught him that one step inside would bring him roughly five feet forward in the outside world.

(The only reason for his familiarity of the distance between the school and dorm buildings was his shameless exploitation of his ability to avoid foot traffic in the mornings, but no one needed to know that.)

The pocket space didn't have visible walls or a floor. Instead, small, countless floating shards of glass surrounded them. They moved languidly against and with each other. Upon closer inspection, one could see that they were neither transparent nor reflective, yet seemed to produce its own gentle glimmers of light. As Eiichi moved forward, quietly counting his steps, the shards below joined tightly together to create a platform for his feet; Those before Eiichi and Mitra parted to make way, and the ones behind were quick to close the path.

A few minutes later, Eiichi halted. He glanced at Mitra to make sure he was beside him before pulling them both out—and promptly felt a headache coming as he processed the situation in front of him.

They were a ways off from the square, but he could see a group of young civilians, some injured, still lingering around despite clear orders to evacuate. More paperwork. Cleo somehow drew the Poex's ire, though her stance was sloppy with exhaustion. And, what a surprise, Elise and Junhwa were there too. They weren't at the front line though—a small comfort. Still, no time to waste. The Poex looked enraged and ready to maul Cleo to pieces.

Eiichi turned to Mitra and spoke, "I'm assuming that you can finish it off."

Not a question, only confidence in Mitra's abilities.

With a loose plan in place, he stalked up behind Cleo and gave her a quick once-over.

"Know your limits," Eiichi reminded, unimpressed by her condition. "Now, get out of the way."

He turned towards the Poex and amped his "threat level" up to an eleven. The Poex, who'd been ready to pounce towards Cleo again, froze in its spot and turned crimson eyes towards him. Unruffled, Eiichi stared back and tilted his head, as though inviting it to a brawl. If there was one thing that he'd learn after years of fighting these beasts, it was that they liked to go for the big fish. Whomever they saw as the most dangerous opponent, the Poex were sure to try and take them out. And now, Eiichi was seen as the most threatening person within the city square. A lack of self-preservation, really, Eiichi mused as the Poex took the bait and charged towards him with a domineering roar. Just before its claws bore down on him, Eiichi vanished from its sight, then reappeared a split second later a few feet away. The Poex narrowed its eyes, and if its low growls and flicking tail were any indication, it was intent on catching its prey.

Eiichi huffed out a laugh as an ironic thought crossed his mind. Like a game of cat and mouse.

Mitra.

“If you don’t mind,” Eiichi said, a tap following soon after.

Initially, Mitra had nodded to express his consent. Perhaps it wasn’t quite the safest mode of transportation around, but it was certainly the fastest, and he trusted the aloof professor’s capabilities. However, intense nausea set his nonexistent stomach rolling the moment the floor literally disappeared from under his feet. He had long braced himself for it, but as a soul closely tied to the earth, he fared poorly whenever that connection was abruptly cut. Apparently, alternate dimensions were no exception. His only remaining solace was his inability to eat; it wouldn’t be a pretty sight to vomit in someone else’s personal space.

Though his entire body felt like lead, he hid his cumbersome steps behind a steady gait and an expressionless mask. Resultant of his focus on retaining the illusion of a functional state (as well as secretly marking down Eiichi’s pocket space as an experience worse than plane rides), he failed to appreciate or take much note of the softly illuminated shards of glass strewn about the pocket space. After what felt like an hour of trudging through the space, the brunette finally let out an internal sigh of relief when Eiichi pulled them out of the unexpected hell.

It was but a brief reprieve, as his eyes were greeted with the sight of civilians still strewn about the square. Foolishly, some were even engaging the Poex. A closer look even revealed that all three second generation students had followed suit. Or had they been the instigators? Whatever the case, the crowd’s current vanguard, identified as none other than Celeste Donovan, was on the verge of paying dearly for it. That is, if it weren’t for Eiichi’s redirecting of the monster’s attention.

Eiichi’s simple statement and his actions following were enough to deliver a rough understanding of the plan he had in mind. Whether or not he agreed with their role placement was one thing, but it was about the best plan with their current limited resources. It was particularly so when considering the civilians still in the area.

While the Poex focused its attention to Eiichi, Mitra took quick inventory of its various wounds: considerate damage to its eyes, some scorch wounds, and a few lacerations here and there. Quite evidently, it was weakened. Good. It appeared to have regenerative abilities, but all that meant was they had to act quickly.

Fortunately, the Poex was like a wild animal and possessed a severe lack of intelligence. Such base creatures focused solely on one task, in this case tearing into its prey while caring for nothing else, making Mitra’s current job easier.

The moment Mitra observed the overgrown feline tense its muscles to pounce, he deftly skirted around its perimeter and raised a clod of earth and cement beneath his feet (he promised to fix the floor later). Using the upheaved platform’s momentum, he leapt in a high arc. While airborne, he rotated his body accordingly and took a sharp dive, intending to land a brutal kick aimed right for the crown of the Poex’s head.

Paying no attention to whether or not he had landed on his target, he attempted to immediately bounce back off of wherever his left foot had landed and aimed for embedding his right heel into the Poex’s jowl. All while hoping to avoid monster slobber, of course.

Ravyn watched as the monster was lit ablaze. She did something! She was helping! She nearly let out a whoop of joy when it collapsed. They did it! They defeated the beast! It was dead!

Then it wasn't. All the work that had gone in to getting this far was gone. Poof. The beast was alive and totally healed. This place was whack. Totally whack.

All of you, get away from here!

Didn't have to tell Ravyn twice. She sprinted away from the monster, not knowing where she was going. Adrenaline rush to the max
Snap!
Her heel broke and she tumbled to the ground, skinning her knees (thanks ripped jeans) and spraining her wrist which she idiotically used to break her fall. She yelped in surprise, the jarring stop reminding her of the pounding pain in her head. How could she have forgotten about that? She ripped off her shoes and hauled herself to her feet. As much as she wanted to help, it looked like more experienced people were arriving at the scene. Plus, she valued her life. She didn't mean to be petty or selfish (she loathed people who were), but she couldn't do anything else to help, right? She found herself running around the perimeter of the square to get behind the people who actually knew what they were doing. Maybe if she retreated, it would encourage others to do the same? Probably not. There were glowing orbs, a good looking dude flying through the air and kicking the monster's face, and another dude that was baiting the beast. These people had it under control. Now all she had to focus on was finding a place to hide out until this was over. She found an overturned table and sank down behind it. Her shoes were long gone, her knees were still bleeding, her wrist was swelling, the jumper she had just bought had been ripped to shreds in the heat of the battle, her first aid kit was with the cute guy who honestly needed it more than she did, but her hair looked great. A minor victory in the absolute mess her life had become. She rested her head on the table. Life was great. Absolutely great....

Hanna smiled when she saw the beast struggle to keep up with all of their combine attacks. It seemed pretty hurt from the looks of things, which meant that Hanna's attack was successful.
"Hell yeah! Take that bitch!" Hanna would yell. And in a few moments after that, the monster healed, the damage it once had was gone, and it seemed pretty angry.
"You gotta be kidding me!" Hanna yelled. All that work just for the monster to heal, this was stupid, absolutely stupid. Even if she could summon another fireball, it would do absolutely nothing to it.
"All of you, get away from here!" Someone yelled. Hanna didn't want to retreat though, but she also knew it wasn't time to be Mr. Hero and lose her life. She broke out into an all out sprint, "just like basketball, all your doing is getting to the end of the court..." Hanna murmured to herself. It would seem as if the professionals had come to deal with the problem, which made Hanna feel at ease. It seemed like they had it under control, and if Hanna had stayed, she would had gotten in the way. Once she was a safe distance away, Hanna stopped, and sat on a box to catch her breath. Her shoes were wrecked, which made Hanna want to scream. These were her favorite shoes, and now they were smothered in dirt and had a few cuts in them. Other than her shoes, her cloths seemed fine, though they would need to be washed if she wanted to wear it again. Her hair band did fall out during the fight, so her hair was flowing freely. Hanna turned her attention back to the professionals, this situation was now out of her hands, it was up to them now...
