They were the quite the duo back in the kiddie days. She knew him before everyone knew him. He was the boy who once punched a boy lights out for pushing her off the swing. He was her brother. Still is. That boy is her ride and die. Vance knows that there's a chance that maybe she might lose him to the streets the way she lost her family but if he goes. She goes. That's how it is for her. He's home for her and plus he makes her laugh, only Mari and Khalil can do that. Kay is just one boy that she needs by her side at all times to remind her that there are good people outside this shitty hellhole.

  Mari is not the person that Vance can just put into words. That girl has been with her since Mari moved to Bed-Stuy, and she knows about Ana and everything after that. She knew even before Khalil or anyone did, she was the one that Vance would talk to, she was the one that Vance cried to. Mari showed her a love, she hasn't felt since Ana. When she felt that, she knew that Mari was her little sister. She would damn near go to hell then for anything to happen to that girl on her watch. Vance hates that she has to hide their friendship because of that girl but she respects Mari's wishes. She just wishes that one day, she can hug her sister without checking to see if she is looking.
