Purging heretics since the 41st millenium
Captain wells was rather annoyed with the current situation. His ship was currently being used as a vacation spot for a civilian. He stood on the observation deck and watched the spectacle that unfolded in front of him. A large beach, crowded with refugees all carrying valuables from their homes. Most too large to bring with them. Well's ship; the Thunderchild was stationed in the black water estuary as a safeguard against any Martian threats.

It was at this moment when he heard the thumping of distant artillery signaling an engagement with the Martians. Then over the distant tree line he spotted the hoods that were the tops of Martian fighting machines. In the water there flailed a paddle steamer, "The Duchess" as it was called. Spraying water as it moved painfully slowly across the water of the Black Water Estuary. Three fighting machines stalked into the water as if to intercept the struggling ship. "Action Stations!" Wells shouted down a speaking tube. Only seconds later a set of signal flags rose into the air and smoke and flames furiously poured from the twin smoke stacks of the ironclad. The massive torpedo ram began to bank to starboard before rushing headlong towards the advancing Martians. One of the massive machines raised a long tube and shot a canister of black smoke at the ironclad. The canister harmlessly ricocheted off the iron hull and hit the water in the ship's wake. "FIRE!" Wells shouted as loud as he could. With a thunderous roar of the cannons the first fighting machine was instantly pulverized and its wreckage toppled over and into the ocean in sheets of flame.

Instinctively the second and third fighting machines raised the terrible device that was the Heat Ray and shot. Devastating heat struck along the starboard side of the ship. The Thunderchild with her steering gear still intact used her momentum to ram into the second tripod and topple it over. The machine was then crushed by the ironclad as it drove past. The third fighting machine fired its Heat-Ray which peirced the solid iron hull of the mighty Thunderchild. This blow ruptured her ammuniton storage and the ship exploded in a ball of orange-red flames and blackish grey smoke. The wreckage however continued onwards and struck the third machine and toppled it as well. This one was simply shredded by the friction of the wrecked ship's keel and the estuary's currents.

With that a secondary explosion erupted from the remains and the wreckage was completely destroyed. The ruined ship had broken in two! The two halves then slowly sank under the waves of the Black Water Estuary. The sky was filled with flashes.. Cylinder following cylinder and no one and nothing was left now to fight them. The earth BELONGED... to the Martians...
