Background:

Trent has always been a bit of an unambitious underachiever.  He grew up in Wilton, Maine, and his parents worked in Maine their whole lives.  His father worked as an engineer in Houlton, and his mother was a grocer, then later an elementary school teacher in Wilton.  He has a younger brother name Travis, and an older sister named Theresa.  While his siblings did well in school, Trent was more interested in girls and sports than academics, and wasn't particularly bright. Despite his parent’s pressures, Trent performed below average in school. However, he did excel in sports, playing a lot of baseball, football, and some after school karate and boxing.  He was a star athlete in football, and was a brown belt in karate.  Trent caused a bit of controversy when he got his high school girlfriend Susan Landers pregnant a few weeks before graduation and didn't immediately marry her, despite the pressure from both families.  Instead, he signed up for the Marines, having been inspired by all the post-9/11 patriotism.  He also wanted to leave Wilton, as the thought of being stuck in the small town forever frightened him.  He signed up as a 0351 assaultman in the infantry, and spent most of his time in Afghanistan, sending money back to Susan when he could, and watched his little girl, Kaylene, grow up from a distance.

Despite his athletic abilities, Trent didn't otherwise apply himself while in the Marines, and was discharged after eight years of service, barely achieving the rank of Sergeant.  He left the Marines, and decided to go back to Wilton to help raise his daughter.  Upon his return he tried to reconcile with Susan and even offered to marry her, but she refused and eventually moved away to Bangor.  Perhaps she had been eager to leave Wilton as much as he had, and being anchored down with a child caused her to resent him having the freedom to leave, a chance she never had before.  Regardless, he never mentioned this, and just let the town assume that he chose to be a deadbeat so Susan’s reputation wouldn’t be hurt.  Last he checked, Susan was shacked up with a new boyfriend.  Trent pays his child support, and gets to see Kaylene every other weekend when he drives down.  While he wishes the situation was better, he has forced himself to accept it.  His daughter is thirteen now.  It scares him how fast she is growing up.

Trent’s parents moved to Florida to retire and left him their house. Theresa had moved off to Pennsylvania to get her degree, and married a guy she met in college.  Travis was studying law at Yale.  While his relationship with Theresa is good, he has barely spoken to Travis these past few years.

Unfortunately Trent couldn’t keep up with the house payments and was eventually forced to sell it.  He moved into a trailer on the east end of town, which, while not a glamourous life, has kept his living costs rather low.  He worked briefly at the local grocer, and went to community college for a time (focusing on a degree in physical education), before signing on to the Aroostock County Sheriff’s Department.  He was grateful that the Sherriff gave him a chance.  He wasn’t sure if this was because the Sheriff knew Trent’s parents well, if he saw something in Trent, or maybe just felt sorry for him.  Having to initially supply his own sidearm and equipment was financially rough, so Trent used his father’s revolver that was kept in the sock drawer as his initial weapon.  It met the minimum requirements.  Since then, he’s grown somewhat fond of the old thing, even though his colleagues poke fun at him.

While he hasn’t been with the department long, it hasn’t been without controversy.  Just after his first month with the department, Trent got a call about a possible liquor store robbery.  He was the first on the scene, and was going to wait for backup, but he heard a shot from inside.  Fearing the worst, he quickly rushed into the store, where he saw a masked robber holding the clerk at gunpoint with a large revolver.  Trent ordered him to drop the weapon, and the masked robber spun around in surprise.  Trent immediately shot and killed him.  When everything was settled, it was discovered that the robber was a senior at the local high school, just a kid, who had a promising sports career ahead of him.  The kid hadn’t shot the clerk, but had fired up in the air to intimidate him.  Why he was robbing the store was anyone’s guess, but most assumed drugs.  Trent’s reputation amongst the locals subsequently suffered, and they started calling him a killer behind his back.  Although Trent was cleared in the ensuing investigation, the Sheriff publicly reprimanded him, not so politely reminding him that he wasn’t in Afghanistan anymore.  After a few weeks of leave, counseling, and mandatory retraining, he was relegated to desk duty, until just recently.  He spent the time off drinking, and trying to quit smoking.  He’s down to two cigarettes a day now.  While he feels a bit of remorse about the shooting, he didn’t feel like he had a choice.

The recent disappearances, along with the death of Abigail Chapman have shaken him to the core.  As far as he knew, the town hadn’t had any disappearances or mysterious deaths in recent memory, and having two more people missing was highly unusual.  He fears the worst.  Trent is eager to assist in the investigation and possibly redeem himself in the process

Goals:

Trent wishes to redeem himself in both the eyes of the town, and the eyes of the sheriff, and sees this investigation as a chance to do so.  He also wants to get the bottom of this and bring whoever it is to justice, as he doesn't like the idea of someone preying on his town, and making it a dangerous place for his daughter to visit.  He knows he is not exactly Columbo, but is hoping that hard work and enthusiasm will help.

Description:

Trent tends to be rather scruffy and unkempt in appearance when not on duty.  He has short dark hair, and his hairline is starting to recede.  He is just under six feet tall, and has a medium build and athletic frame.  His eyebrows are somewhat bushy, and his nose is slightly large for his face.  When not on duty, Trent wears flannel shirts, jeans, and a denim or leather jacket when it is cold.  He sometimes smokes, but is trying to quit.  He has a somewhat trimmed beard and mustache, although the mustache is more prominent than the beard.  While he does go to church, he is not overly religious, and tends to go just to keep up contacts and connections in town.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Trent wears a dark brown Stetson hat when not on duty, or sometimes a baseball cap.  He is rarely uncovered, except indoors.  He has a slightly trimmed beard that he sometimes lets go.  He has his daughter’s name and birthdate tattooed on his upper right arm.  He still wears his dog tags from the Marines.  He is right handed.
