Fantasy To Love a Prince

Once on the horse, staying up there was surprisingly easy. Of course, it was due in great part to how gentle the beast seemed to be, and how slow Aimeri was going. Theo would be embarrassed, if it wasn’t for the fact he had his full attention focused on not falling. For a brief moment, he thought he’d felt light headed, his vision blueing just the slightest, but it disappeared just as quickly. He quietly chalked it up to the instability of being up on a horse coupled with his ever present clumsiness.

Aimeri’s voice cut through his thoughts, and for a brief moment, Theo had forgotten where he was. He looked to the knight beside him, his lips parted slightly as he thought of a proper response. In truth, the man was right. There were very few in nobility that were like Theo. That’s something his brother always pointed out. Never in a bad way, in fact, the older prince always voiced his wishes of being more like his little brother. Why someone as charming and princely as Troy would want to be like his impulse driven, accident prone younger brother was beyond him.

“It’s alright.” he finally answered with a light chuckle, swaying slightly when his gaze focused forward again. “I know what you meant.” His eyes followed the line of the trail ahead as it blurred in and out of his vision. Perhaps he needed to rest, but now that Helena and Aimeri was here, it would be rude to do so. “Troy always tells me I’m the oddest prince he’s ever seen.” His airy tone matched the amused smile as they continued forward. “Says he wishes to be more like me. I can’t see why on earth he’d want that.” Perhaps Helena would have been more comfortable with someone like his brother, but Theo decided to keep that thought to himself. After all, he didn’t know her the way Aimeri seemed to.

“How long have you known her?” The question came almost as an afterthought. He looked to the man again, this time making sure to hold on tightly to the horse to avoid losing balance. “Helena, I mean. You seem to know her well.” He was genuinely curious. To have accompanied her to a brand new country where he didn’t know anyone spoke volumes of their friendship.

-

The chef’s features lit up at Helena’s request: Troy knew him well. There was nothing that made the man happier than to have his cooking complimented. “Well of course you can, m’lady.” He beamed. “This is your home now. You can have anything you like.” Troy mimicked the man’s smile, reaching out for the plates in front of them, only to be swatted away.

“Ferdie, I can-“

“Absolutely not, you two have a seat. We will bring the feast to you.” The prince let out a sigh, but didn’t argue any further. This was an ongoing battle between the two brothers and the kitchen staff. The majority of the time, the princes won. However, now that Helena was here with them, Troy thought it best to allow the staff to do what they did best.

“Alright, alright.” He raised his hands up in defeat before gesturing first Helena to step out in front of him out of the kitchen and into the dining hall across the way. There was no one in there this time of day, and the table seemed much too big for just the two of them, but it would prove to be more comfortable than standing in the kitchen.

“I’m relieved to hear they were found, too.” He finally replied to Helena’s initial statement once they were settled in their seats. “And it seems having your companion along helped keep Theo out of trouble.” He chuckled. “They should be back in no time at all.”

Aimeri kept a close eye on Theo as they rode, maintaining a slow pace. The prince seemed to be handling the ride well, but from time to time, Aimerie thought he saw an expression of dizziness dart across his features, It wouldn’t do for him to allow the prince to fall off the horse and crack his head open on the ground, so he moved his own horse closer, just in case he needed to pull some heroics.

Theo’s confession that he couldn’t see why Troy would want to be like him, however, brought a smile to Aimeri’s lips, despite his attentive and protective gaze. “Well… I can,” he admitted honestly.

He met Theo’s gaze as the prince asked after his bride-to-be, and Aimeri’s smile grew of its own accord. “I met Helena when she was five. I was nine, and she terrified me.” He laughed jovially, affectionately. “For such a small woman, she had a huge personality and a stubborn streak that was a mile long. Anything that girl wanted, she got, and she wasn’t going to let anyone stand in her way. She was fierce.” His smile softened into one of regret, and he shook his head, sighing quietly. “Not so much these days. But I know she’s still in there somewhere.”

Looking over at Theo, he continued. “She has the biggest heart of anyone I have ever known. She’s kind and gentle, and very sweet. She loves helping people. It was one of the things she and her parents fought over - she felt they weren’t doing enough for the people of the kingdom.. And honestly, she was right. She saw firsthand what the commoners experienced on a daily basis, the poverty, the illness, the unhealthy living conditions. She was in love with one of them… a horse wrangler named Nycolas. She wanted to marry him, but of course, it was deemed wildly inappropriate. So, the two of them ran away together in the middle of the night. She didn’t even tell me. I was absolutely terrified when I awoke the next morning and she was gone.” Aimeri’s face fell as he spoke, remembering the screams of the handmaids as they realised their princess was missing.

He cleared his throat, pressing his lips together momentarily. “I found them, of course. They hadn’t gotten far. But, that didn’t matter to the king. He had Nycolas killed. Hung him in the town square so that all would see what happened if they dared to love her.”

Lifting a hand, he rubbed it down his face, as if the motion alone could erase the memories, the hardness his features had taken on during the telling of the story. “Helena… she hasn’t really been the same since.”

-
Helena giggled to herself as Ferdinand swatted Troy’s hands away from the plates. The chef had a sense of humour that was warm and familiar, and it was obvious he carried deeply for the princely brothers. It was endearing, and she found herself smiling happily as she walked with Troy across the hall to the dining area.

“He’s quite fond of you, isn’t he?” Helena noted as she took her seat. Instead of sitting miles apart at the impossibly long table, she took a seat across from Troy so they could talk easily while they ate.

“Oh, that’s wonderful news,” she said once he explained Theo and Aimeri would be back soon. “Kalli and Flicker are really good horses. They don’t normally run off like that. They must have been terrified by the accident.” She smiled as the staff brought in their plates, poured them both a drink and then departed respectfully. “It was a very scary thing, but it’s all worked out in the end, hasn’t it?”

Her smile was warm, and became increasingly happy as she picked up her fork and began tasting all the wonderful foods Ferdinand had prepared. “Mm.. this is incredible!” Her stomach reacted happily as well, and a bit of colour came back to her face as the food instantly made her feel better. She turned that bright smile toward Troy, her eyes glimmering with contentment and curiosity. “You and Theo are quite close, aren’t you? Can you tell me more about him? And yourself as well, of course.. What was it like for you two growing up here?”

The way in which Aimeri talked about Helena made Theo smile. He’d never seen a bond quite like this between a princes and her guard. It was endearing, and said a lot about Helena’s character. Even more than Aimeri’s actual statements. Theo had always thought he’d marry for love. He was never keen on the idea of an arranged marriage. He would even fight against it. But the moment Troy had lost his beloved fiancé, he knew he’d have to put aside his own wishes in exchange for his brother’s happiness. Now, listening to Aimeri talk about the kind of woman his bride-to-be was, he didn’t find the idea of the arranged marriage to be so bad.

His brows knitted together as the story continued, however. Suddenly feeling very suspicious of his future father in law. He was thankful that both he and Helena wouldn’t have to see her parents often. He didn’t see himself getting along with them well. “That’s a little ridiculous, don’t you think?” His exclamation was louder than he’d meant it to be, but the thought of publicly executing someone for simply being in love had him feeling outraged. “Was it really necessary to kill him?”

He huffed, his lips forming into a dissatisfied pout. He thought of Helena and the pain she must have been in to see the person she loved being taken from her. It was enough to light a fire under him. He gripped onto the horse, turning to Aimeri with a smile, lined with the smallest bit of mischief. “We should get her horses back to her then.” He stated before signaling the beast to pick up speed.

“Race ya there!” The horse’s hooves broke through the pasture, towards the road they’d first been on. Picking up speed was likely not good for his dizziness, but the thought of getting the horses back to their rightful owner pushed him forward. And knowing Aimeri was right beside him made him feel safe.

-

Troy took note of the smile on Helena’s face. Despite the rough start to her day, it seemed she was already feeling much better. A good meal would likely help with recovery too. Ferdinand’s cooking never missed, so seeing the princess gush over the delicious food wasn’t surprising, but it still gave him a sense of relief to know that she enjoyed it.

His eyes met hers as she asked about Theo, and their childhood, and his smile formed in its own. He took a bite from his own plate, taking in the flavors before he spoke again. “Ah, we’ll… where did I even start with that boy?” He chuckled, fork hovering over the meat. “He’s a handful, for sure. He always has been. Ever since we were little, he was always the one getting himself into trouble, and I would get him out of it.” He recalled fondly. Despite Theo having had a few close calls, Troy never truly got upset with him. Quite the opposite.

“He’s always been so brave and selfless.” He watched Helena for a moment, wondering if any of this information would change her perception of Theo. If it did, he’d hope it would at least be for the better. “A lot of the time, he’d get into trouble because he insisted on helping our locals. Just like he did today with your horses…he’s always been that way. And as reckless as he can be…I often wish I were more like him.” He admitted. The truth was, even though he was older, Theo had always been much more courageous. That’s one of the things Troy admired most about his little brother.

“Ferdinand has been working for our family even before Theo and I were born. He’s like family, and Theo loves to bother him any chance he gets.” Troy’s chuckle was cut short by a spoonful of food. He hummed happily over the taste. The chef never disappoints.

“I know arranged marriages aren’t always ideal…” he added absentmindedly. “But I know Theo will do everything he can to make sure you’re happy.”

Aimeri’s eyebrows show up in surprise at Prince Theo’s response to Helena’s tragically failed romance. It was endearing to witness, actually, to see how astonished and angered the prince became. It would be beneficial for a strong and dependable man to be by Helena’s side in her time of need. Aimeri could see how desperately she needed that. In that moment, he was again incredibly grateful to Theo and it showed in the grin that stretched across his face, brightening his eyes with happiness.

As Theo suggested they make haste and return the horses to the castle, Aimeri nodded once, effortlessly encouraging his own beast onward to fall into a steady rhythm as they raced back towards the roads. The wind whipped past them, ruffling their hair and clothes, and Aimeri pushed his horse faster still with a commanding ‘hiya!’ A laugh of delight also escaped his lips, though it was almost immediately carried away by the force of the wind around them. As they raced, the sound was scarcely heard.

Aimeri maintained a watchful eye on his royal companion despite the youthful joy that the freedom of the race gave him. The man had been dizzy after two healings and Aimeri didn’t want him to tumble from the quickly galloping horse. An accident like that could be fatal, he knew all too well.

-

While eating, Helena enjoyed hearing Troy talk about his younger brother. She knew how families could often see each other in rose-coloured glasses, but Troy’s devotion for Theo was so genuinely portrayed through his words that Helena didn’t doubt him for an instant.

She paused between bites to take a sip from her glass, saying, "He sounds wonderful.” And it was the truth. Theo seemed kind and selfless and gentle. She no longer held any apprehension about what kind of man she would be marrying. The only worry she had was whether or not they would be able to grow to love each other. In time, she knew it might be possible for her heart to heal, but at that moment, it seemed like an impossible feat.

Nevertheless, she found she did want to be good to him, and for him, and so she smiled at Troy, nodding her head as he promised Theo would do anything to make her happy. “I will do my best to be a good wife to him,” she said in turn, setting her glass upon the table.

“I am very sorry to hear about the passing of your wife, my lord. I know that pain all too well. It isn’t something I would wish on even my worst enemy. You have my condolences.”

It had been so long since Theo had been on a horse, he’d completely forgotten how liberating it could be. The wind met them with fierce intensity, rushing past them as the beasts picked up their place. The prince stole a glance at the man beside him as they raced on. His laughter, though barely heard over the wind’s tune, was enchanting. In the end, he couldn’t help but join in. His own laughter floated with the wind, propelling him to run even faster.

His heart raced, but not from fear nor nerves. The excitement washed over his entire body and for a moment it almost felt like he could fly. Flower pedals adorned the air around them, and Theo found himself wondering if he’d ever be able to spend time with Aimeri like this again. He knew he should be focused on spending time with his future wife, and he would. But this knight was important to her, which meant he was also important to Theo. Not to mention, his company brought among a sense of safety and peace that Theo often yearned for.

After a while, the palace grounds began to come into view. Theo made sure to slow down his horse before speaking. “That’s it, right up ahead!” He informed his companion. The gates opened for them upon their arrival. None of the guards were too surprised to see their youngest prince on a horse. Most of them had worked in the palace for over two decades, which meant they had grown used to Theo’s antics long ago.

“Welcome back, your highness.” One of them greeted them as they neared the palace doors. Theo nodded with a smile, swinging one leg over the horse to hop off. “Thank you. Could you let my brother and the princess know we- we fo-“ for a moment, he thought he was seeing things. Everything around him seemed to be spinning. “Ah- sorry I-“ he shut his eyes a few times hoping it would help, yet his head only grew dizzier. He felt his body falling to the ground but couldn’t stop himself. He felt the concrete only for a moment before everything went black.

♥️

Troy often found himself going on and on about Theo. It was a force of habit. Of course he adored his little brother, but he also admired him. His way of living, of talking, how he often took care of others, jumping head first into action for them. Reckless at times, but Troy wasn’t like that and he sometimes wished he could take a page out of Theo’s book.

He meant to apologize for raving so much about Theo, but Helena’s statement caught his attention. He watched her for a moment, deciding on whether it would be appropriate to ask about it or not. “Thank you…” he took a sip of his drink, setting it down as he spoke. “I am sorry to hear that as well. I hope-“

“My lord!“ The frantic calling of one of the guards pulled Troy’s attention from the conversation. The man was out of breath. Almost as if he’d ran there.

“Yes, what is it?”

“It’s your brother, sir-“

The panic instantly flashed across Troy’s face as he rose to his feet. “What? Is he alright?” The man simply gestured for both Troy and Helena to follow. Troy looked to the princess, wondering if she’d want to come along or wait for them there.

Aimeri couldn’t believe his good fortune. On what had begun as a terrible day that came very close to ending in tragedy, here he was - having the time of his life. He found himself finally letting go of his worries and enjoying the present moment as the wind swirled around them. It was exhilarating and freeing, and the grin on his lips seemed to cover every inch of his face.

That is, until they eventually slowed before the castle, coming to a full halt in the courtyard of the enormous, majestic building. It was grander and more lovely than the one they had left behind, and he wondered what Helena thought of her new surroundings. It was a fleeting thought, however, as he caught sight of Prince Theo suddenly falling to the ground, his eyes closing as he blacked out. Aimeri dismounted and raced to the fallen prince's side, alarmed. He quickly took Theo into his arms, being careful not to disturb him, as he barked instructions at the nearest soldiers. “He’s fainted. Get the door!”

To anybody who hadn't witnessed Theo fall, the knight might have appeared to be merely carrying the sleeping prince to bed, much like a father might carry their child after a hard day. But Aimeri's features were strained and tense with worry, and he hurried after the soldiers as they escorted them to the infirmary, no trace of his former delight on his face.

Helena was taken aback by the entrance of the guard and his frenzied words. Theo was hurt? Her attention jumped to Troy and the pair of them rose from their seats in the same breath, her eyes widening with worry. She gestured with a wave of her hands to go, quickly following after him through the halls and corridors of the castle, until they reached the infirmary.

When she saw Aimeri standing at the entrance, she was both relieved and disturbed by the look on his face. He appeared to be well, but he was visibly shaken. “Em? "What happened?" She questioned, placing a hand on his forearm, following his gaze to the unconscious prince currently lying on an examination bed.

“He fainted,” Aimeri explained in a low voice. "I suppose two healings in one day was too much for him." Guilt drew at the corners of his eyes, wrinkling and darkening them.

Helena recognized the expression, knowing it well. She had seen him like this before, and she shook her head. “This wasn’t your fault, Em. You couldn’t possibly have known.”

Aimeri brushed her words aside. She had no idea. She hadn't seen his injuries or Theo treating him while he was already exhausted. Aimeri should have been more cautious and denied the treatment, and the prince was suffering the price as a result. He turned to face the doctor, who had come not long after he had placed Theo on the bed. “Will he be alright?”

The look on Aimeri’s face when they reached the infernare was enough to cause worry. It wasn’t the first time Theo had fainted, but it had been a long time since. If he wasn’t mistaken, Troy was almost certain the last time it had happened was during magic training, when the younger prince tried to do more than what his body could handle. Still that seemed odd, considering what he’d done for Helena shouldn’t have been enough to cause him any harm.

He watched his brother carefully, the steady rise and fall of his chest managing to ease his worries a bit. He looked peaceful, even if the situation was worrisome. The doctor worked to check vitals and any other important indicators. He didn’t seem too concerned, but then again the man had always been rather skilled at masking his emotions. Troy supposed it came with the territory of seeing so many different illnesses, some more fatal than others.

Aimeri voiced what Troy wanted to ask as the two looked to the doctor. There was a pause before the man turned with a slight nod. “He’ll be alright. There’s no signs of any serious issues.” He stated. A sigh of relief left Troy’s lips, one hand reaching out to check his brother’s temperature. He was warm, in the way Theo always was, but no signs of a fever either. “If I’m not mistaken…” the doctor continued, looking mostly to Troy for an answer. “This has happened before, yes?”

Hesitantly, Troy nodded. “Correct.” He glanced to his brother again, recalling the events of his last episode. “We were both practicing our magic. But Theo has never known how to give up…. He did too much and drained his body.” The doctor immediately nodded, as if Troy was voicing his exact thoughts. He looked to the unconscious prince once again. Both noticed the flutter of the dark lashes before Theo’s eyes opened, glancing around in a daze.

“Hey…” Troy’s voice was quiet and careful, almost as if he were afraid of spooking the young prince. Theo’s vision too a moment to adjust. At first, it was nothing but blurred colors. The lights were bright, and he had to squint a bit to see. “Hi…?” His response almost sounded like a question. “What’s going on…?” His voice had more of the husky quality than it normally did, and his throat felt dry. There was a bit of aching in his back and right arm, but aside from that, he only felt extremely tired.

“You fainted.” Troy stated, worry still etched into his features. Theo merely responded with a roll of the eyes and a sigh.

“Again?” His eyes shifted to the man beside Troy, images of their time together slowly flooding his memory. He probably shouldn’t have pushed himself, but he wouldn’t have been at peace knowing Aimeri was hurt and he could help. He scanned the man’s features for a moment, brows knitting together in question. “Are you okay?” Perhaps he wasn’t in the position to be asking that, but the man looked troubled and Theo didn’t like that.

The look of concern continued onto Helena’s face as they all looked towards him. He watched her for a moment before a smile slowly spread on his lips. “We found your horses.”

There were no words to express the amount of relief Aimeri felt when the prince opened his eyes, seeming more or less okay. The wrinkles smoothed from his face, his gaze immediately softening as his concern melted away.

“I am fine,” he assured Theo, a small chuckle of amusement escaping his throat. Theo was the one who had passed out and hit the cobbled stone ground, but he was asking if Aimeri was alright?? He was something else… But Aimeri couldn’t help his grin as Theo focused his attention on Helena, informing her of the horses’ safety, as if that were on anyone’s mind at that moment.

Helena, too, smiled, her green eyes brightening with both relief and happiness. “Thank you for doing that for me, my lord,” she said, maintaining her manners even as she stepped closer.

“You gave us all quite a fright, you know.” There was a gentle note of admonishment in her voice, similar to the one she used with Aimeri when he did something to worry her.

Em noticed it, and laughed from behind her. “Uh-oh.. That didn’t take long..”

Helena rolled her eyes, shooting Aimeri a playfully annoyed look. "Hush, you." She waved her hand at him before she focused her attention on Theo once more. What a pair they were going to make - both fainting on the day of their introduction. It was rather funny in hindsight, and she giggled softly, shaking her head. “Not exactly the first meeting either of us had in mind, I’d wager. I hope, for the sake of both of us, it will be smoother sailing from here on out.”

They were kind, genuine words, and her smile was true. Theo was her husband-to-be, after all. Troy had done his best to assure her of his brother’s consideration and generosity. She may as well try to make things work. She extended a warm hand to him, offering her help if he needed it. “Are you able to sit up?”

The tone in Helena’s voice and her gentle admonishment reminded Theo of someone. His eyes shifted to Troy, recalling all the times he’d heard something similar from his older brother, and couldn’t help but mimic Aimeri’s chuckle. It was rather sweet. Just because they were to be married, it didn’t mean Helena was obligated to care about him or his well being. After the story he’d gotten from Aimeri, Theo didn’t expect anything from her, but her words were kind and brought a smile to his face even as he fought the dizziness.

“Quite the pair, aren’t we?”

He accepted her hand, pulling himself up into a sitting position. The room spun for a moment, shutting his eyes instinctively. There was a dull pain that shot through his right arm, which he hadn’t realized had a large, red scar across it until he opened his eyes again.

“You cut your arm, presumably on a stone when you hit the ground.” The doctor explained before Theo had a chance to question it. He nodded, accepting the outcome. This wasn’t the first time he’d suffered injuries and it certainly wouldn’t be the last.

“Does it hurt?” Troy questioned, raising a hand to press the back of it to Theo’s forehead to check his temperature. The younger prince chuckled, playfully swatting his overly concerned brother’s hand away.

“It's just a scratch.” He watched his brother’s features for a moment before adding- “I’ll just heal it real quick-“

“Absolutely not!” Troy and the doctor’s voice came in unison, earning a bubbly laugh from Theo. Troy sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as his eyes closed. “You just love getting me riled up, don’t you?” Theo only smiled as the doctor inched closer.

“Please allow me to handle that, your highness.” Theo only hummed in response as the man got to work. He watched Troy in amusement as the older prince placed a hand on Aimeri’s shoulder with an exasperated sigh, features settling into a lighthearted smile.

“Looks like we have got our work cut out for us.”

Helena and the others fell into a routine of sorts. There were a lot of things for her to learn of this new kingdom, so a royal tutor was brought in to teach her everything about their history and traditions, as well as their current laws and regulations. It was a lot, but she studied hard everyday. It was a good distraction from the pain that still lingered in her heart, and she was grateful for that.

Aimeri had his own studying to do. As the royal guard of the future queen, there was a different set of protocols than he was used to. New attire, new colour guard; it wasn’t difficult, but it was tedious work, even if he picked it up quickly. Mostly, it all felt a bit silly, but he would never disrespect his new kingdom enough to say so.

In their free time, which there wasn’t as much of as Helena expected, she and Theo became more acquainted. He was kind, gentle, and sweet. And though she grew to have a deep respect for the way he carried himself, treating everyone he encountered with politeness and kindness, she realised she didn’t have a single romantic feeling for him. In secret, she told Aimeri of these feelings, or lack thereof. He assured her that, in time, it would come, that they would fall in love as they spent more time together, but there was something flickering in her friend’s eyes that told her he wasn’t entirely sure they would.

Instead, she found her heart and face growing warmer whenever Troy walked into a room. All he had to do was smile at her, and her cheeks would tint with a pink blush, her eyes brightening with unexpected delight. It wasn’t something she understood, not when her heart still mourned the loss of her fiance, not when Theo was the man she was supposed to be falling for.

It confused and worried her, even more so as she witnessed Aimeri and Theo quickly growing closer. She would often catch the two laughing amongst themself at some quietly spoken joke. And once, during a game of chess, Aimeri and Theo’s hands brushed each other’s, and she swore she saw the guard actually blush. Aimeri seemed more relaxed and open with Theo than even when he was with her, his closest friend. It surprised her, as he had always been quite emotionally closed off with the rest of the world, in spite of his outgoing, jovial personality. But also… she was happy for him. For Aimeri to connect so wholly with someone so fast, it made this arranged marriage and move to a new world, more worth it than she could have imagined.

Within a matter of weeks, it was time for Theo and Helena’s engagement ball. Nobles from all over the kingdom would be in attendance, as well as the members of parliament Helena had spent her days learning of. They didn’t seem like the nicest men, if she were being honest, but she tried to keep an open mind, and would greet them all with a warm smile and open arms.

The palace was abuzz with activity as the day drew closer. Decorators, designers, caterers asking dozens of questions, handmaids and ladies-in-waiting following her from room to room. Aimeri did his best to keep close to her, the air of a protective big brother keeping his face stern when it all got to be too much and he had to step in and insist she took a break. She noticed he did the same thing with Theo, smoothly switching between his charges, juggling all the commotion with ease and respect of his superiors.

Finally, the ball was upon them. The ballroom was filled to the brim with well wishers and people excited to see their new queen-to-be in person. Helena smoothed her hands over the incredibly soft fabric of her champagne coloured dress as she looked at Theo, just outside the ballroom, awaiting the announcement of their entrance. She smiled at him warmly, extending her hand. “Ready?”

Aimeri stood vigilantly behind the couple, dressed in a royal guard’s uniform, armour free. He looked comfortable and relaxed, but with the eyes of a hawk as he sought to protect the royal couple from any harm meant for them.

Color scheme, florals, centerpieces. What fabric were the napkins supposed to be? Theo remembered going through these things back when Troy had been engaged. It all seemed to trivial, tedious even. But every detail had to be perfect, right down to the smallest thread. It was a lot for someone like Theo who never planned ahead more than a couple of minutes.

Most questions seemed to be directed towards Helena herself, but he’d often butt in, if only to ease her load. She already had so much to focus on with coming to a whole new kingdom with different customs than her own. So many minor things that Theo never truly thought about, as they had become part of his daily life since he was born. It was only now that he realized how different lands could be. Helena handled it with grace, of course. With what little free time they had together, he’d come to know her a little more. Realizing they were actually very similar in many ways. They meshed well together, and got along better than imagined. Theo quickly grew fond of her.

But the thought of having to marry her never failed to bring a dull p[ain to his chest. He knew he shouldn’t feel this way. Helena was an incredible woman. Much more put together than Theo himself. She was kind and intelligent. The kind of queen this kingdom needed. But no matter how hard Theo tried, his romantic feelings towards never seemed to be there. Part of him had already feared this would happen, and though he never expressed it to Troy, his brother knew. Growing up, Theo had always been different from the boys his age in many ways. Not just the fact he was royalty, but even among nobles, he was considered a bit odd. As he grew alongside his friends, they all started to have crushes on some of the noblemen’s daughters. Theo never did.

He’d never experienced a crush firsthand, that is until he’d met Simon. Son of one of the members of the parliament. The two formed a bond almost instantly, became nearly inseparable. At first, Theo interpreted his feelings as nothing more than admiration for his friend, but as the boys around him described how they felt about their crushes, Theo came to realize he too felt that way. About Simon. It terrified him, and even in his bravest moments, he never spoke of this. Not to anyone. Even as Simon got engaged and left him behind. But Troy knew. His brother knew him well.

No different from now. Whenever Troy caught Theo’s gaze lingering a bit too long as Aimeri walked by. When his laugh came so easily and his smile brightened anytime he and the knight were together. When the pang of guilt washed over him as he remembered who he was meant to marry. It hadn’t been Simon, and it wasn’t Aimeri. It never would be. And even as he did his best to be at peace with that, it hurt. Having to burry such a big part of him hurt more than he’d ever let on. His only consolation was knowing Helena would make a great queen. But he found himself wondering if perhaps…by some miracle…he could share that side of him with her and have her understand. It was wishful thinking, he knew that. But even as life caged him in, Theo never seemed to learn his lesson.

“Ready?”

The voice floated into his thoughts, his eyes shifting to the woman beside him as his feet were brought back to reality. It only took him a moment to compose himself, nodding confidently as he held out an arm for her.

“Always.” It wasn’t entirely a lie. The fire within Theo never seemed to go out, even at his lowest points. Even as his eyes landed on Aimeri for a brief moment, and his chest tightened yet again. He cleared his throat, following the sound of their names being announced as they stepped through the large double doors.

As the engaged pair entered the ballroom and descended the grand stairwell, all eyes came to rest on them, hushed whispers being exchanged as they took in the appearance of their new princess. Helena felt mildly nervous about the attention of so many strangers, but her hand on Theo’s arm didn’t tremble. She held her head high, shoulders back, exuding a regal strength that had been passed down to her, generation through generation. It was easy to spot her mother and father among the crowd of onlookers, and even though she hadn’t expected them to be in attendance, her warm, kind smile didn’t falter from her lips.

Aimeri had no such issue. No longer a member of their royal army, he gave the king and queen of Emavaria a disapproving look. Despite being aware that their attendance was recommended, giving the portrayal of a happy alliance, he wished they had stayed away. Helena was doing well here, finally beginning to move on from the grief that had stained her heart. Any conversation with her parents would surely set her back, ruining the progress she had worked so hard for. He made it his personal mission, then and there, to keep her away from them if at all possible.

At the bottom of the stairs, he not-so subtly ushered Theo and Helena away from the vicinity of the unwelcome king and queen, instead steering them toward the familiar, friendly face that was Troy.

“You two were great,” Aimeri commended as the crowd began to mingle once more, returning to their conversations and drinks. “Didn’t trip or anything,” he teased, just to bring a quiet giggle from Helena’s lips. Amused relief glittered in her eyes and she shook her head, dropping her hand from Theo’s forearm to take his hand in hers, giving it a small squeeze.

“That would have been tragic,” Helena admitted with a laugh underlying her words. “I don’t think I could have recovered from that.”

Aimeri grinned at the pair of them, white teeth flashing as a charming mischief filled his eyes. “Oh, don’t you worry about that. I have a plan in my back pocket, to take the attention off you both, if need be.”

Helena chuckled, rolling her eyes at him before she turned her attention to Theo, still holding his hand in a comfortable, relaxed way. “Well… I suppose it’s time we greet the guests, hm? Who do you think we should talk to first?”

The scrutinizing gazes of the parliament was something Theo had grown used to. It was no secret the group did not approve of his way of living. Their noses were all held too high to see anything past them. It was the curious gaze that caught Theo’s attention, most of them directed towards Helena. Admittedly, there was a moment in which his footing did falter, taking him dangerously close to tumbling down the steps. He was able to recover, however, and save them both the embarrassment. Aimeri’s presence behind them was comforting, even more so as he ushered them towards Troy.

“You two look breathtaking.” the older prince commented, letting out a small chuckle over Aimeri’s comment. Theo couldn’t help the quiet snort that left him. “You should know we were seconds away from tumbling down the stairs.” he admitted. His clumsy nature at this point was a secret to no one. Both Helena and Aimeri had been around him enough now that they’d both witnessed it first hand. Troy shook his head with a gentle smile, looking around in quiet response to Helena’s question.

Theo hummed quietly, taking a glance around the room himself, until his eyes landed on a couple of the parliament members. Troy immediately noticed the subtle lift of the corner’s of his brother’s lips, immediately interjecting.

“Theo… don’t.”

The younger prince feigned innocence, large eyes turning to look at Troy. “What?”

“I know what you’re thinking. Just play nice for one night, please.” Troy’s plea seemed halfhearted, almost as if he knew asking was pointless. Theo fabricated offense, his features molding into shock with a quiet sigh and a hand to the chest for dramatic effect.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, I’m always nice.” he turned to Helena before Troy had a chance to say anything else. “Shall we go say hello to our lovely parlement?” He gently led her in their direction. Troy immediately turned to Aimeri, clear concern in his features.

“I have to go take care of something, can you please keep an eye on them. Last time Theo was alone with the parliament members, it didn’t end well-” He glanced in the couple’s direction as they approached their destination, already taking note of the fake smiles on the guests’ faces. “You have my permission to shut Theo up if needed.” he added with a sigh before turning on his heels, searching for the king and queen.

Aimeri nodded in response to Troy’s request, immediately falling into pace behind the prince and princess as they approached the two stuffy looking parliament members. Before anyone had even spoken, Aimeri could smell trouble - the two men appeared to be trying to stare holes into Helena and Theo both, and though they smiled - thin, tightly stretched smiles that almost looked painful - their gazes were unkind and judgemental and… searching. But searching for what, Aimeri didn’t know.

Taking up a post behind his princess and prince, he clasped his hands behind his back, dutifully remaining quiet until the time came for him to show some teeth.

Helena, too, noticed the peculiar way the men were watching Theo and herself. The way they were staring so intently made her wonder if they had something on their faces. It was quite uncomfortable, but she smiled politely anyway as they approached.

“Good evening, sirs,” she said respectfully, though she didn’t release Theo’s hand, even when she curtsied slightly before them. In fact, her grip tightened somewhat in her discomfort, the only sign in her body that something felt amiss. “Thank you so much for joining us in our celebrations.”

One of the men, whom she recognized from her studies to be named Albrecht, actually scoffed, barely making an attempt to cover it up with a cough behind his white-gloved hand.

“Yes, well, we simply had to see our new princess in person, didn’t we? And to assure ourselves that this will be a most happy union.” Albrecht said in a voice that sounded as if he spoke solely through his nose.

Helena’s smile wilted ever so slightly at the edges. Albrecht hadn’t bowed before them, as was his duty, and he seemed to be speaking down to them, as if he was their superior. Instantly, she didn’t like the man. Not for his lack of propriety, but for the glint in his pale eyes, which, if she didn’t know better, she’d describe as disgust. What on earth did he have to be disgusted about? Surely not their union, as she was from a fine kingdom; sure, not as fine as this one, but still. She wasn’t exactly a peasant either. Was it something else? Her confused eyes followed his gaze as it dropped to where her hand was fitted snugly inside Theo’s. It wasn’t much larger than her own, nor calloused and rough as her lover’s had been, but it was warm and familiar, emboldening her to defend whatever it was this little man seemed to be picking apart in his mind.

Still, as she spoke, she maintained her respectful, soft tone, her words kind despite the hint of a warning in her eyes. “I do believe you mean to wish us a happy union, my lord, not assure yourselves of one. And we are quite happy. Excited for the future, and for the alliance between our peoples. I consider myself lucky to be betrothed to a man as fine and respectful as Prince Theo.”

Albrecht frowned slightly, stealing a glance at his compatriot, a man who looked just as old and stuffy as himself. “Mm,” he grunted. “Of course, your highness. Happy wishes, indeed.”

Aimeri’s presence behind them was very comforting, Theo had to admit. He didn’t look back at him, but knew the knight was watching them closely in that protective way he did. Theo wasn’t foolish. He knew Aimeri cared deeply for Helena. They were like family. She was his priority. She was who he looked out for. That was very sweet, and gave Theo a piece of mind that Helena had someone she trusted wholeheartedly with her. Still, he couldn’t help but wonder, every so often, if Aimeri also cared enough for him to want to protect.

Not that he needed protection, nor did it matter. Theo always reminded himself that his position had no place for such thoughts, even when his eyes found themselves wandering in the knight’s direction. His presence was like a warm embrace. It was that very comfort that had Theo approaching the parliament members in the most calm manner he could manage. He promised Troy he’d try to play nice. And he was. He was trying his very best to not gag over the looks on the mens’ faces. He also didn’t miss the way Helena’s grip tightened as she spoke. Theo instinctively moved closer, allowing the princess her chance to speak. He’d already hinted at the unpleasant nature of these men once before. Unfortunately for her, now she’d have to see it first hand. Of course, she handled it with absolute grace, but it wasn’t her that they disapproved of.

“Happy wishes to you as well, Prince Theodore.” the man beside Albrecht commented in the demeaning way only he knew how to do. Theo’s lips morphed into a smile. At first, laced with feigned pleasantry, but it wasn’t long before his features were painted with mischief and the smallest hint of mockery.

“Elliore, hello! Did you get a new haircut?” the man watched Theo with confusion, but wasn’t given a chance to answer before the prince added. “I like it. It makes your nose look much smaller.” The man visibly recoiled, his hand instinctively moving to check his nose. Theo’s attention immediately turned to Albrecht, a fabricated mask of excitement taking his features. “Oh, Albrecht. Your son told me the wonderful news. I am so happy for him!”

The small man’s lips pressed into a thin line for a moment, seemingly reluctant to ask. “And what news might that be, your highness?” Theo’s eyes grew in surprise, free hand coming to rest against his chest as he gasped quietly.

“Oh…has he not told you? Well, I suppose he doesn’t speak to you much, does he?” Being petty wasn’t something Theo typically chose to do, but there was no greater satisfaction than seeing the looks on Albrecht and Elliore’s faces as they searched for a response.

Helena quietly listened to the exchange between Theo and the two older men, her expression remaining politely neutral, even when Theo’s comment on Ellior’s nose made her want to giggle. It wasn’t a kind or respectful thing to say at all, but neither of the men before them were being kind or respectful themselves, so she didn’t think it would hurt… too much.

Aimeri, on the other hand, had a harder time holding back his amusement, and had to turn his head away, hiding his chortle behind a feigned cough, his closed fist covering his mouth as he did. Troy had been right; Theo did seem to have a knack for egging people on, and whether it was right or wrong, it wasn’t exactly princely. Aimeri found that he admired the prince even more for it - he wasn’t one to take an insult lying down, and isn’t that the kind of ruler a kingdom needed?

He was still smiling to himself as Theo pushed a bit further, congratulating Albrecht on something that neither of the parliament members seemed to be aware of. Helena, too, looked confused, and the princess turned slightly to address Theo, her green eyes puzzled but curious.

“Oh? What news is there? Is he to be married?”

Something twisted in Aimeri’s stomach, a strange feeling of concern telling him the conversation needed to end abruptly. Maybe it was the darkening expression in Albrecht’s face, a look that was more dangerous than being simply annoyed.

“If my son was to be married, I think I would know.” The words were spoken in a low voice, the hand around his flute of champagne tightening visibly. “And it is not your place to presume otherwise, Your Highness.”

‘Your Highness’ was very nearly spat out with the same venom as a swear, and Helena’s head whipped back toward Albrecht in shock. “Excuse me, that is no way-”

Aimeri cut Helena off as he stepped forward, all humour gone from his face, his relaxed stanced instantly tightening with his protective nature. “Forgive me, but it’s time to move on, Your Highnesses,” he said in a firm voice, placing his hands on Helena’s and Theo’s shoulders. “A lot of people wish to extend their congratulations to the newlyweds. Good Evening,” he nodded a goodbye to the two men, using his strength to gently but forcibly turn the engaged pair away and into the crowd once more.

It was a cold war each time Theo and any of the parliament members met. Their disdain for their youngest prince was painfully obvious. So much so that Theo was certain Helena had taken notice from the moment they walked up. Theo knew it wasn't very prince-like to talk to them the way he did, but in his book, respect was earned. If they decided to disrespect him, he would give them the same energy back regardless of whether that made him a bad prince or not.

The way Albrecht spoke to Helena in response to her question made Theo's blood voil. His brows knitted together, ready to step in if need be. They could be rude to him all they wanted, but they would not get away with speaking to her that way. Unfortunately, or fortunately for Albrecht and Eliore, Aimeri stepped in before either Helena of Theo could bite back. The knight ushered them away as gently as one in that situation could. Admitedly, Theo had provoked them, but he didn't like the way they disrespected Helena from the start, nor the way Eliore glanced in Aimeri's direction, the look on his face clearly meant to demean the knight or dismiss him altogether.

As they were being ushered in the opposite direction, Theo glanced back at the two, his eyes narrowing, brow tilting inwards. They may not like him, but he wanted to make it clear that the feeling was mutual. It wasn't until they were far enough and out of earshot that Theo spoke again, turning his attention to Helena.

"If they speak to you like that next time, I will not hold back." he informed, fully prepared to follow through. "And did you see the way they looked at Aimeri? I do not care what they think of me, but they won't get away with that again-" he huffed, the anger that initially took over his features slowly dwindling down into a worried expression. He took in a breath, looking to Helena again with an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry... it's just. They've always been this way and it really irks me. I hope you don't think I'm always this disrespectful...." he extended the apology to Aimeri, knowing he had been the one to step in and keep things from escalating.

As Theo turned his head back to scowl at the men, Helena followed suit, frowning at them over her shoulder. While Theo’s expression resembled that of someone disgusted by something they had stepped in, Helena’s was disapproving and scolding. She hadn’t appreciated their attitude in the least, and she couldn’t understand why they would behave in such a manner to begin with. They had no reason to dislike Theo so much, as far as she could tell. She should know - in the time they’d spent together, he’d been nothing but sweet and respectful.

But she allowed Aimeri to lead them away, in spite of her urge to go back and demand an apology from them both. Instead, she got an apology from Theo, raising her eyebrows in surprise as she looked to him.

“Don’t apologise, Theo. You’ve done nothing wrong. They were being horrible, for absolutely no reason..”

She sighed softly, letting her irritation seep away as smoothly as it had come, her features softening once more as she returned his smile. “You were great, I promise.”

Releasing his hand at last, she laid it flat against his chin and leaned in to press a light kiss to his cheek. To those watching, it was a sweetly affectionate gesture, and, in truth, it was, but not the way the onlookers presumed. She kissed him with a sisterly fondness and gratitude for his willingness to defend her.

“Mother and father are here,” she said as she straightened once more, looking between Theo and Aimeri. “I think I should go say hello.”

Aimeri opened his mouth to protest, but she shook her head at him. “It’s alright, Em. It’s the proper thing to do.”

“Then I’ll go with-”

“No, no.. You stay here with Theo. Protect him from any more of those surly old men.” She chuckled lightly, but there was a note of seriousness in her eyes. She wanted him to look out for Theo the way he always looked out for her. She patted Aimeri’s arm affectionately, smiled at Theo and then turned and disappeared into the crowd in search of her parents.

Aimeri watched her go, unable to fight the thread of concern he always felt for Helena when she left his sight. It was his job to protect her, after all. It had been his job for a long long time. But with a sigh, he assured himself she would be alright, and then turned to Theo, giving him a smile.

“She can be frustrating sometimes, but she’s usually right.” He laughed quietly, shaking his head. “But seriously, she is right this time. What you did back there, it had its own kind of honour, if you ask me. Not many people in your position have the strength to stand up for themselves. You should be proud of yourself.”

His brows arched then, a spark of curiosity touching his gaze. He leaned in very slightly, lowering his voice in secrecy. “But I’m dying to know. What was the news about his son?”

In truth, Theo didn’t regret what he said. He was only sorry Aimeri and Helena had to witness that within such a short time of being here. It was only a matter of time before they got to meet the ever so pleasant parliament members. Theo had just hoped they’d get a little more time to get comfortable in their new land before the standoff. He was grateful though. Neither of them seemed to be bothered by it. Helena even gave him a kiss of gratitude. It didn’t feel romantic, and perhaps that’s not how she’d meant it, but it did being a smile to his face nonetheless.

The mention of her parents brought on a new expression, however. He hadn’t forgotten what Aimeri had told him the first day they met, during their search for the horses. He wasn’t sure if he was allowed to know it, but he couldn’t fully hide the concern on his features as Helena spoke of going to greet them. He would’ve protested, sent Aimeri along with her. He knew her best after all, but she was gone before he could even get a word in edgewise. He sighed, his attention turning to the knight.

“Thank you, sir” he bowed slightly like an actor after their performance. It was the following question that brought a giggle out of the prince, leaning in close enough that he could almost whisper. “There was none.” He admitted. “I just wanted to remind him that his son likes me more than he likes his own father.” The mischievous look on his face lingered a bit, until he turned to fully look at the knight. There was a quiet flutter in his chest when their eyes met, and for a moment Theo had forgotten they were not alone. He felt the heat rising to his cheeks, eyes frantically searching for a change of subject. Something. *Anything* that would take the attention off of himself.

“Oh- look!” He excitedly pointed towards the refreshments table. A large tray filled with small pastries covered in powdered sugar sat at the center. “You have to try those!” He took hold of the knight’s army, leading him towards the table, offering him one of the small pastries once he got there. “There are my absolute favorites.”

Aimeri’s brows lifted toward his hairline, his green eyes widening in surprise. A deep, rich laugh bubbled up from his chest at the lingering look of mischief on the prince’s face. “That’s amazing. I can’t say they didn’t have it coming,” he mused, stealing a last glance at the still scowling members of parliament before following Theo over to the refreshments table.

That was the last comment he made about the situation. It wouldn’t be a pleasant evening for any of them if they focused solely on the surly guests. It was a celebration, after all, and they were meant to be having fun. So he grinned widely as Theo offered him one of the little pastries, taking it between his thumb and finger.

It didn’t look anything like the treats of his and Helena’s kingdom, which, in his mind, had always resembled some kind of fruity… brick. “Looks good,” he commented, then popped the whole thing in his mouth, chewing it thoughtfully.

It was delicious. Soft and sugary and probably one of the best things he’d ever eaten. A look of delighted wonderment crossed his face as he enjoyed the sweet treat. “This is one of the greatest things I’ve ever eaten,” he admitted with a warmth in his voice. “I can see why it’s your favourite.”

Meanwhile, Helena found her parents, engaged in conversation with her future in-laws. Troy was there among them too, and she inwardly relaxed at the sight of him. She had been dreading facing her parents, even if it was the proper thing to do, but to have a friendly face among them gave her courage and peace of mind. As was expected of her, she curtsied first to her in-laws, and then to her parents, smiling with polite grace. “Mother, Father… so nice of you to join us.”

Queen Iris, a woman of perpetual muteness, didn’t say anything, just gave a slight nod of her head. She was beautiful in a cold, untouchable sort of way, like a winter sun that shone no warmth upon the land. Her father, on the other hand, had all the outward charm and charisma of the boy next door. Behind closed doors, it was a different story, but here and now, Fredrik beamed a dazzling grin, embracing his youngest daughter in a hug that nearly suffocated her.

“Helena, my dear! How marvellous you look! And this is quite the shin-dig, isn’t it? I was just telling the king how lucky we are to have married you off to such a well-to-do family. Makes me wish they’d had a daughter instead, for your brother.” He chortled in a seemingly good natured way as he clapped his fellow king on the back, a bit too roughly. He was a big man, imposing and frightening to most, and she knew Troy and Theo’s father was unwell, so she cringed slightly at the sight.

“Mm.. Well, I’m sure Ivan is grateful they don’t. You know how he adores Neria. But I feel quite lucky myself. It is rather lovely here.” She turned her smile toward her in-laws as she said this, gratitude in her eyes. “But I think I need a refresher. Troy, would you care to join me?”

It hadn’t taken very long for Troy to find his parents, already engaged in conversation with a pair he didn’t quite recognize. It wasn’t until he was introduced to the king and queen that the resemblance made sense. Helena looked a lot like her mother, but there was something so strikingly different about the way they carried themselves. While the princess was warm and lively, the queen was cold, distant, seemingly uninterested in anything he or his parents had to say.

He’d hoped to get a moment alone with his parents, to see how his father was fairing. Knowing him, even if he didn’t feel up to par, he would pretend up until the bitter end. The older prince watched him carefully, looking for any signs of discomfort. Helena’s voice was what pulled him from his concentration, his lips instantly forming into a soft smile. Though he remembered the story he’d been told about what her parents had done, his face remained amicable. Even as the king gave his unnecessary comment.

“Ah, yes of course.” he didn’t hesitate to accept Helena’s request, wishing to separate her from her parents as quickly as possible. His mother Odilia placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, her eyes giving a silent warning. It seemed out of place considering Troy was always on his best behavior.

“When you get a moment, could you please Bring Theo, dear?” Of course, the warning was to be passed down to his brother before he made his appearance with the future in-laws.

“Yes, I will go search for him. Please excuse us.” he gave a slight bow before gently guiding Helena away, his shoulders instantly relaxing . “Are you alright?” He could already spot Theo and Aimeri ahead at the dessert table, but his steps remained slow, giving the princess time to respond.

Seeing the reactions of those that tried their head chef Ferdinand’s baked goods never disappointed. Theo’s eyes watched with wide enthusiasm as Aimeri tate the treat, his features lined with content. The smile on his face was wide, already having forgotten about the parliament schmucks and their distasteful attitudes. If there was one thing Theo was good at, it was at not caring what others thought about him. Perhaps it wasn’t the most princely trait, but it made for a much happier life.

“Ferdie is a genius, isn’t he?” the prince mused. Both Helena and Aimeri had already had the privilege of meeting the large but gentle man who’d become like a part of their family. In truth, most of the kitchen staff as well as the guards and even the housekeepers that had been there for decades were family to Theo. He’d grown up with them, especially when the king and queen had official matters to tend to. It was people like Ferdinand that had shaped Theo into who he was. “I used to sneak into the kitchen when I was little to steal the pastries as he was making them.” he confessed with a giggle. “But he never minded, He allowed me to sit and watch.”

The fondness was clear on the young prince’s features as he took a treat for himself, taking a bite before his gaze fixed on Aimeri’s features again. An amused smile took over, his hand gesturing to a spot near his own chin. “You’ve got some-” he watched for a moment, taking note of the knight’s confusion, and decided to just help. “Here-” the small distance between them grew smaller as Theo took a step forward, his pastry free hand reaching up to carefully wipe the powdered sugar from the man’s face.

At the moment, he didn’t mean anything by it. And it’s true Theo didn’t typically care about what others thought about him, but there were always exceptions. The opinions of people like Troy, Helena and Aimeri mattered to him more than he’d ever admit. He realized his gesture could’ve made the knight uncomfortable, and quickly recoiled, his hands falling at his side. His features morphed into a mixture of worry and apology. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to- I just…wanted to help.” his last words trailed off with a sigh.

Helena smiled softly at Troy’s question, nodding her head as she settled her hand lightly on his forearm, allowing him to lead her toward the refreshments table where Theo and Aimeri were chatting amongst themselves. “Mm, I will be. For my parents, that atrocious behaviour was almost civil.” She shot a quick glance over her shoulder to where their parents were still engaged in conversation, her father no doubt spewing more embarrassing nonsense while her mother quietly looked on, never looking anyone directly in the eye.

Lowering her voice to a murmur, Helena confessed as she looked back to Troy, “I had hoped their invitation would get lost along the way, but I suppose I’m not that lucky. Still… in spite of their rudeness, it might be a good thing they are here, no? It means there is hope of a prosperous alliance… I hope.” She didn’t look entirely convinced by her own reassurances, and she quietly bit her lower lip in consternation, before rolling her eyes and exhaling a small huff of annoyance. “Who am I kidding? Knowing my father, he’s likely picking your family tree apart to see if you have a long lost sister among the branches. Never mind that Ivan is already married, and happily, I might add. Father.. Well, as you know.. He’s despicable.”

Aimeri blinked, surprised at the sudden touch. Heat rose up his neck, tinting the tops of his ears pink. The sensation of Theo’s thumb against his chin, wiping away the powdery residue from the pastry, was gentle and warm, lingering even after the prince seemed to remember himself and dropped his hand, stepping back.

“Don’t,” Aimeri meant to reassure, but the single word came out in a breathy whisper. He surprised even himself as he reached for Theo’s recoiling hand, meaning to bring him back, to show him it was okay. But… it wasn’t, was it? They were far from alone - an entire kingdom’s worth of royals and nobles surrounded them, as well as the ever observant parliament. Surely someone had seen Aimeri’s hand link with Theo’s, even for just a moment, his features twisting with concern at the look of shame and regret on Theo’s face. It was overwhelming, how desperately he wanted to take his face in his hands and kiss away that look of worry. The notion very nearly stole the breath from his lungs, his face burning with a heated blush that would give him away if anyone with a pair of working eyes simply looked at him.

“It’s.. it’s okay,” he finally managed, his voice lower and more gruff with emotion than he intended. To save face, he cleared his throat lightly, then reached for the nearest goblet of alcohol, downing it in a few quick gulps. He wiped at his chin then gave Theo a wobbly smile, still shaken, but visibly calmer. “There.. Is it gone?”

Troy’s features shaped into a mixture of annoyance and frustration as he listened to Helena. Of course he knew her father wasn’t a good man. Truthfully, even if he hadn’t heard the stories, he could've picked up on it simply by the way he addressed his daughter. It was distasteful, and quite frankly, he didn’t relish the idea of being tied to someone like that even if only by law.

But Helena…

She was entirely different. So earnest, vibrant. Real.

He found himself admiring the way her words shaped her features as they walked. Everything she felt put on display for him to see. It was almost enchanting how comfortable she seemed to have become around him and Theo. But also, a bit disheartening. Despite his best efforts, Troy knew his little brother’s heart well enough to know he would likely never come to love Helena the way he was expected to. That wasn’t Theo’s fault, nor Helena’s. None of them were at fault, really, save the obscure and dated norms that prevented Theo from living the way his heart asked him to. He could only hope that the engaged couple has at least reached a level of comfort where Theo could be honest with her.

But he hadn’t missed the way his little brother looked at Helena’s companion. Not unlike the way he found himself looking at the princess at times. He made sure to school his features while in public. Especially now while they were under the scrutiny of so many. A sigh left him in response to her comment.

“Well luckily, for your brother’s sake, I’m almost certain we don’t have a sister.” he chuckled.

“Don’t”

It was unexpected. Not only the response itself, but the way Theo’s heart skipped in his chest. The pink that rose to his cheeks matched Aimeri’s own, the sensation of the knight’s skin under his touch still lingered. Burned almost. As if he’d touched something he wasn’t supposed to. His stomach twisted in that familiar pain that came with such gestures. He should know better. He did know better. But his body had moved before his head managed to catch up. Now he stood in the wake of the painful confusion left behind by his actions.

I”m sorry…I shouldn’t have done that.

The words he wanted to say to the knight stayed locked in his throat. Because despite how many times he apologized, it wouldn’t change a thing. It wouldn;t change the way his entire body came alive anytime he was in the same room with Aimeri. Nor the way he made Theo feel understood. It wouldn’t erase the times he has imagined spending the night in the man’s arms. He felt a lump building in his throat, but quickly forced it down with a light smile. It asn’t okay…but they could pretend it was, at least for now.

He studied the man’s face just long enough to assure the white residue was gone and responded with a quick nod.

“Perfect.” He inhaled the pastry that had still rested in his hand, hoping the sweet sugary taste would help drown out his thoughts. He caught a glimpse of Troy and Helena headed back in their direction, his shoulders relaxing almost immediately at the comfort that came with their presence.

Helena smiled brightly at Troy’s light words of reassurance, nodding her agreement. “Lucky for him, indeed. But lucky for me too. Truthfully, I was… uneasy… about the prospect of marrying someone I had never met. But,” she met his eyes with a warm smile, “by some surprising miracle, I am happier now than I have been in a long time. To be welcomed into your home, surrounded by people who are openly kind and affectionate towards one another. It’s a stark contrast from Emavaria.”

Her gaze shifted to Theo and Aimeri, her smile softening somewhat at the sight of them. It was obvious the two men had bonded. She supposed any other princess might be upset at the development; seeing her betrothed and best friend become closer and closer, but she couldn’t bring herself to feel anything other than happiness for them both. She wondered if Troy knew, or suspected what she did. Would it bother him? Something, perhaps the way he spoke about Theo, as if his brother was his whole world, told her he would share in her happiness for them. The thought warmed her smile as she lowered her voice to a murmur none other than Troy would be able to hear.

“It feels like I have finally found my own family, something I thought would never happen.”

Aimeri’s face was still hot, his pulse still a little too fast, but he managed a calm and collected smile as he noticed Helena and Troy approaching. He searched Helena’s face for a moment, his brow arching curiously. “Did you speak to your parents already?” At Helena’s silent nod, his brow went higher, concern entering his eyes. “That didn’t take very long. Was it alright?”

Helena chuckled so quietly that it was more of an exhalation than actual laughter. “As alright as it ever was with them. Father has been drinking… he’s embarrassing himself, and me, like always.”

A frown tugged at Aimeri’s expression as he looked over her shoulder toward the pairs of royal parents. “Oh? How so?”

In a few words, Helena filled Aimeri and Theo in on the fool Fredrik was making of himself. Aimeri’s expression darkened further as he huffed, “What an insufferable piece of work.”

Helena nodded once, worrying the inside of her cheek uncomfortably. “Yes. Well… I’m afraid it’s about to get much worse. I believe they’re wanting to meet my fiance.”

She said this as she looked at Theo, holding her hand out to him. “Shall we?”

It was a touching sentiment. Troy’s gaze watched the princess as she spoke, taking note of the fondness in which she described how it felt to be here. After all the stories he’d heard about her homeland, and the things her father had done, he was relieved to know that she found comfort here. Even with the less than welcoming parliament members lurking around, she was able to find peace of mind. Even going as far as calling them family.

He smiled fondly, his gaze following hers as it landed on Theo and Aimeri. He wondered for a moment if they were both thinking the same thing, but there was no sign of discomfort in Helena’s face as she watched them. It's entirely possible that she suspected the same thing he did, after all, she knew her friend better than he. But Troy knew his brother. He recognized that look on his face from miles away. He also didn’t miss the way his features shifted as they approached.

While Helena kindly filled them in on what the situation with her parents was, Troy kept a close eye on Theo. He could still see the remnants of a blush, and had half a mind to talk to him about it later in private. But he knew Theo well enough to know he’d talk when he was ready.

“Oh?” the younger prince’s voice chimed in, brows raised slightly at Helena’s information. His eyes watched her outstretched hand for a moment, a glint of mischief shimmering in his carefully placed smile. “But of course.” For the sake of Troy, and their parents, Theo was determined to try his best to be polite. Putting aside all the awful things he’d heard about the king specifically would be difficult, but he could manage for at least a few minutes. Long enough to introduce himself before stealing Helena away for a dance. He would not have her dealing with them longer than necessary.

He could feel the eyes on them as they approached the group of four. Theo quickly greeted his parents before giving a slight bow towards the guests. He put on his most polite smile, not wanting to give them any more reasons to embarrass Helena.

“King Fredrik, Queen Iris. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.” he lied easily, keeping any snarky remarks to himself for the time being. If all went well, he wouldn’t have to use any at all. He could only hope, for Helena’s sake, that it would be a peaceful encounter.
