Realistic or Modern 'Tis the Season- A Cursed Holiday

Honeybucky

Moving- on a small hiatus
" Got a light?"

The sudden voice that chirped from the entrance of the alley startled the old man, and he felt his body jump and stiffen at the sudden intrusion. Turning slowly, the man with the bushy brows and the gaunt, sinking features faced his vocal assailant.

" Say whit-" Bewildered, the man in the dirty green button up shirt and greasy apron let his jaw hang open for what seemed like forever. The owner of the voice that stood in front of him now could have been pulled straight out of the nuthouse. He was tall, unusually so; and his attire was absolutely atrocious. His suit looked as if it were made from silk and lined with bones, poking out in all directions that it probably shouldn't be, and covered in grime and cobwebs. Entirely black, his tailcoat was tattered and weathered, trailing against the concrete and leaving a little path of dust wherever it went. The old burger baron would have made a comment about how unsightly his shoes were- had this oddity of a man actually been wearing any.

" Who'er yoo?" The thick accent of his northern homeland burned deeply in his throat, and for some reason, he found himself looking up to the strangers face. He froze, completely and utterly overwhelmed with fear as he gazed upon his face.

" A light." The voices seemed to scratch at the baron's brain, and he shivered, paralyzed where he stood. Unable to do anything but pathetically flap his gums, the man cocked his head to the side, seemingly out of annoyance.

" Jack." He started, and the Baron didn't feel any better with the new information.

" Who?" He stammered out.

" Halloween."

" H- Hall o-whit?"

" Christmas?"

" Whit th' hell 'er ye gabberin' abo-"

" Holidays?"

". . . Whit in the bloody hell is a 'Holiday'?"

The stranger smiled then, and the Baron had to refrain himself from bolting out of the alleyway then and there.

" Nothing rings a bell?"

" . . .No?" He sounded pathetic now, and for some reason, he felt utterly compelled to pull his lighter out from his back pocket and handed it too him.

" Good-" The stranger said, reaching out with spindly fingers to grasp at the lighter. " It worked."

Imagine a world without holidays. Where a day is simply a day, followed by the next, and the next. And no sort of particular celebrations are held to commemorate events; it is a world without culture, without charm. Without the momentary happiness and breaks from the every day mundane.

And why would such an unthinkable world come to pass, you may wonder? Well, what if I told you that the Spirit of All Hallows Eve was unsatisfied. That he felt highly disregarded. And that over the years a stew of anger, jealousy, and burning hot rage had boiled over- and finally he snapped. He would end them, he had decided. He would become the one and only holiday; and everyone would love and revere him above all else.

But how does one kill an immortal spirit, especially if that spirit gains it's life from the people who celebrate it's existence? Simple. Remove the source of its eternal life. But how could he do that, without merely killing off the humans in question? The answer itself came to him just as easily.

A curse. He would remove them from their seats of power by wiping them off the calendar altogether- he would plunge the world into a mundane and colorless darkness, one without memory or notion of any such holidays, and slowly he would starve his fellow Spirits of their power, effortlessly killing them in the process. His plan was ingenious.

That is, if Easter hadn't found out about it, first. Not knowing what to do- Easter HAD to find a way to stop the nefarious Jack, but once he discovered the details of Jack's plan, he knew there was no way to stop it. However, that didn't mean he couldn't do what he did best- hide a little surprise for everyone to find later.

Jack knew he would get bored with waiting, so he built in cruel little games to make his brothers and sisters go through for his own amusement while he watched them perish. But Easter decided to use this to give them the advantage. He planted eggs within Jack's games, making it so that once a game begins, the Holidays participating in his devious puzzles would momentarily regain their memories, and a small semblance of their old abilities, in order to survive these horrible tasks that they would be put to. And, in the end, East took a single key memory from each Holiday, placing it within an egg, so that would present itself to the winner of each challenge that Jack throws at them. Upon seeing the memory their identities would be returned to them permanently.

Easter prayed that once enough Holidays had their memories and abilities returned to them, that they would be able to find a way to bind Jack to the other side forever.

That is, if they can manage to win his horrid games. And if they can manage to gather their memories back before Jack finds the eggs tucked away within his plan. All while racing against the clock, for without the humans to maintain them, it would only be a matter of time before the last of their life ran dry.

So, basically, the spirits of the Holidays have been cursed into Human form without their memories. They live in a city/ the outskirts of the city, going about their daily lives- until Jack starts playing his games, and they have to fight for their survival. Or they can sabotage other holidays, or split up into groups and try to help each other out. Its a complete competition to see who can finish his challenges first. While fighting for survival.

Most of it is still up in the air and its under construction, and I will be taking questions here while I work on the final product. o uob! If anyone is interested, that is ;;
