This wasn't supposed to happen

Melany stared out of the window; her mobile phone in her trembling hand.

“Hello, Madam are you still there?” a worried voice at the other line.

It came to her as a foolish question. Of course she wasn’t all right. How could she be? She was just told her daughter had been in a car crash.

This wasn't happening

She murmured something in the phone. She didn’t know if other could hear her soft goodbye, as she broke the connection. Nor did she cared. There were more important things now.

Her husband, he had to know. In trance she dialed his number.

“Luna got in a car crash,” her voice steady, unbroken.

This wasn't happening

Silence on the other side, then his voice, almost unrecognizable.

“I be there soon, pack everything she needs in hospital.”

She nodded and rushed up stairs to gather pajamas, shirts, sweaters and after a moment of doubt also Teddy, Luna’s stuffed animal. She smiled as she pictured her daughter rolling her eyes, embarrassed that her mother brought her stuffed animal, like teenagers do. But, Melany knew at night she be thankful.

It will all be ok

She stumbled downstairs, with the bag in her arms when Roger came home. He reached for the bag, but Melany held on to it tightly while making her way to the car.

“You have everything?” Roger asked, as he sat down in the drivers-seat.

“Yes,” Melany answered, sitting down next to him. The bag safely on her lap.

It will all be ok

Roger got them to the hospital, safely. What was a little miracle, with the way he was driving. Roger’s strong arms led her into the hospital and though the grey hallways. To someone that would tell them more.

“We came to see our daughter,” Roger said as they reached the administration, “Luna Johnson.”

The secretase glanced down at the computer typing something. Then she frowned and looked at them sorrowful.

“Go to the room in the back, the doctor be there soon,” she said pointing.

This wasn't good

To Melany it seemed like they sat there for a lifetime, but according to her watch it had just been five minutes. She jumped up as soon as the doctor came in, praying he had good news. But the man shook his head.

“Sorry, we did all we could.”

Roger took her in his arms. Her husband, her rock , was trembling, sobbing. Yet her tears didn’t seem to come.

This wasn’t supposed to happen

“Can I see her?” Roger asked.

The doctor nodded and led them out of the room, back into the hallways, what seemed greyer and darker than before.

The doctor stopped in front of a door, “You sure you want to do this now?” he asked, before letting them in. “It is ok if you aren’t ready yet. Some people take longer than others.”

She nodded, she had to see. She shook her head, she didn’t wanted it to be real. Finally she nodded again, she couldn’t hide forever. The doctor nodded and let them into the room.

It was cold in the room, Luna never liked the cold. Always wearing sweaters when others where wearing T-shirts.

This wasn’t supposed to happen

The doctor led them to a bed and pulled the blanket back uncovering the girl laying underneath. Her black hair fell over her pale face and closed eyes. She looked peaceful, as if she was asleep and could wake up any moment. But, her chest didn’t move. Her eyes didn’t flutter open.

Melany would never hear her laugh again, speak again, see her roll her eyes. With that realization the tears finally came. Roger wrapped his arms around her tightly as she clutched the bag in her arms. A bag filled with clothes that now had no use anymore.

This wasn’t supposed to happen

But it did
