This book describes in great length the justice system and various legal procedures of Asgard. The most important parts have been stressed out. The last few pages are covered in hand-written notes of Dina Tenarus, documenting the Chosen's investigation during the trial of Captain Raynard in Ridge.

The Tribunal

Introduction

Not every criminal act of breaking the law invokes an investigation and trial. Many cases are handled on the spot and justice can be dealt quickly, especially at the command of high nobility such as the Lord of a town, a high-ranking military commander or a member of the royal bloodline. However, the same law also allows individuals to defend themselves on fair trial, at least in some cases.

Law of Reasonable Doubt
"If there is reasonable doubt regarding any aspect of the case which could impact the guilt and innocence of the accused, he or she is entitled to invoke the right to a fair trial by the Tribunal."

Law of Honorable Right
"If the accused is of noble origin or honorable position, he or she is entitled to invoke the right to a fair trial by the Tribunal."

Only the conditions of one of these laws need to be met in order for the Tribunal to be invoked. The only other way is if a member of the royal bloodline orders it. Assuming a scenario where the Tribunal is successfully initiated, the following rules apply.

  • The accused party is guilty until proven otherwise.
  • The accused party has the right to defend itself, or be defended by any free citizen of the kingdom.
  • Both the defense and prosecution side must be given access to all case-relevant resources.
  • The trial must be resolved within three days.
  • The Tribunal's judgement is final, and appeals can only be made if solid evidence is provided.
The Tribunal has two different stages: trial and investigation. Officially, whenever the trial is not in session, it is understood that the investigation is underway. During the investigation the defense and prosecution interrogate witnesses and turn up evidence - while during the trial they present their findings. Each session of the trial has the following stages.

Trial - Opening Stage

At the first day of the trial, this is when the case is briefly explained by the prosecution. On the second and third day, a short recapitulation of the previous day is given.

Trial - Witness Examination Stage

This is the main and most important part. The prosecution calls up witnesses who give statements, while the defense cross-examines them. Evidence may be submitted during this stage to support a claim or deny part of a witness testimony.

Trial - Closing Stage

The closing stage officially takes place just prior to reaching a verdict - so actually every time when either the defense or the prosecution is unable to reasonably support their case. To cancel the closing stage one side must present either solid evidence or strong arguments required for the trial to continue. This action can either prolong the trial or adjourn the session for that day if more investigating is needed. At the end of the third day of the trial, a verdict must be reached. If it is not, usually the accused party is declared guilty. Of course, the outcome depends on case-specific conditions and can also be influenced by a member of the royal bloodline.

Notes on the trial to Captain Raynard of Ridge:

- On September 23rd, somewhere between 23:00 and 23:30 hours Lieutenant Ferndow was murdered in an abandoned warehouse in Ridge. The guards who arrived at the scene found Captain Raynard and immediately arrested him as the culprit.

- According to Inquisitor Herondale, the person who tipped off the City Watch about the murder was a drakkar named Rhex. Apparently he was a member of a smuggling organization called "Dark Company." Rhex seemed to be betraying his group by acting as an informant for the local authorities. These facts suggest that the two cases are linked together.

- The Dark Company's headquarters in Ridge, infiltrated by the Chosen, will undoubtedly offer plenty of evidence that implies knight-commander Robert Stark of the City Watch as the one responsible for Lieutenant Ferndow's murder, beside the fact that Stark has confessed to the crime and was placed under arrest.

Crime Scene
