The Staff's Ask Us (Almost) Anything

Hey all. This has been highly requested by the site at large and here it finally is. As long as it doesn't violate the 6 rules below, come ask us anything!

  1. If you want to ask a specific member of staff please tag them (@Username), if you just wish to ask the everyone on staff a single question just specify that. However, general questions about the site you can tag our fishy friend @The Staff. Someone will answer your question as the staff account! (Don't tag the staff for personal or opinion questions! Ask actual staff members)
  2. Please be aware that there is some information we can't reveal to you. You trust us to keep your personal information personal, just because you can ask us anything- doesn't mean we will break that confidentially.
  3. In addition to that, there are also some inner workings of the site that we cannot reveal to you and can only hope you will understand.
  4. Yes- you are allowed to ask us questions about the rules. However, they must be generalized- no questions about specific members/situations but you are welcome to ask us how the warning process works or things like that.
  5. However that doesn't mean this thread is exempt from the rules. Please ask appropriate questions in accordance to the rules! In addition, if someone is uncomfortable with an inter-personal question they have the right to decline an answer (Such as if you ask for their address.)
  6. We are trying to keep things on a more serious note and open the discussion to you as a member, so to get all the silly questions out of the way we have created a character sign-up for all those participating in the Staff AMA.

How do you become awesome? Oh wait, I already am. Another question, how do you overcome laziness and procrastination to start writing? @The Staff

@The Dark Wizard. It won't tag on my phone sorry much.

My question is as follows.

One does not simply own a website. In the bigger picture of things, why would you want to take ownership of a website like RPNation? We are a nonprofit. We are awnry. We are loud. We are time consuming. What does owning RPNation mean to you and why? How does your experience here benefit you in the real life?

It may sound rude but I mean no offense. It would dawn on me that working a large site would be a great benefit to one's resume so with the questions above; how do we effect you on a personal and professional level? What is your end game goal for us and how do we help you(if at All)?

So what if everyone's post count was 333,555? Or 555,333? Would something special happen? Should we all strive to reach this number? And what happens if we hit 888,888? I'm guessing since it would be a combination of both, something ULTRA-spectacular would occur. Or is it just a silly dream? What should we do?

@The Staff

Why do you not have a monocle and/or pipe? Surely you have figured out by now that we sharks can smoke pipes under water. That, my good lad, is just common sense!

I could tell you what happens... but that would ruin the fun of finding out for yourself! You only need 333,311 more posts!

@The Staff

Is it normal for people our age to role-play, or are we all just so cool? I think I know the answer so here's a serious one, I haven't been role-playing in quite some time. Is there a secret to being a good role-player?

Will the "delete" button on threads i make come back anytime soon? Its hard when i make an rp and no one joins or its dead and i have to get a moderator and wait for it to be deleted. (I'm on mobile so if im late to the party and this site updated and that was brought back, I'm sorry.)

When you have writers block, or you just can't think of something for your next post, do you have any special things you do that helps with overcoming the problem? Maybe something like walking, or yoga?

No, seriously now. If you could turn time back, would you do anything different? Would you change your life in any way at all? Or are you happy how things have turned out so far? If you prefer not to answer, I understand. Pretty deep question :P @The Staff

@The Staff, I am an evil insane overlord with an army of clones and have over one billion trillon dollars to play around with. I will take over the world using freaking "Lasers" but here is my question.

Would you like a tea or coffee?

@Moderators , I have a question regarding what is percieved as fair in terms of kicking people out of a RP. If i did an RP where i stated "Players can not invent or control any NPCs without my Permission" and they did it on a constant basis, if i kicked them out after 3 warnings, would it be a reasonable decision to make? Also, if i kicked people out for posting too quickly, would that be fair? One of the things i dislike about RPs is that some players post too quickly and do not wait for others thus the RP becoming a bit of a mess. It's one of the reasons why all RPs i've been in have died on here.

@Inquisitor, are you expecting the Spanish Inquistion or the THEDAS Inquisition?

@The Staff , how did you find RPnation and what's your favourite Roleplaying memories? and what has annoyed you in the past in terms of RPing? E.g., godmodding, too quick pacing, lollygagging etc...

Why is @Inquisitor so handsome?
I use the secrets of the Arcane to maintain my beauty.

As for the former, I'm a huge Tolkien fan, so Middle Earth is definitely up there. But I'm not sure I have a single favorite.

No thanks, not a tea or coffee fan.

Honestly, fairness in kicking people is up to the creator of the RP. If you deem it okay to kick the person for their offense, then by all means, do it. It might kill the game, sure, but it's always up to the creator. The only time we really get involved in games is when there's actual rule breaking going on.

I am all Inquisitions, so I perpetually expect them all.

I dunno if I can effectively answer the last question. Too many awesome RPs to try and cover.

You see... the true number of joy comes when the site reaches 333, 333, 333 posts. When that happens, RpNation will explode with happiness. Free kittens and puppies and baby lizards will appear for everyone's please. A whole day later we will most likely get an award saying we won the internet.

Actually... I like watching something emotional. Laughing a lot, crying a lot, being scared. All that kind of really gets me excited and usually inspires me. Though the inspiration is usually geared to whatever emotion was kicked out of me.

Yes. I think you can kick someone after breaking your rule. Specially if you've given them a fair chance to change their behavior.

I don't think kicking people for posting too quickly is fair without giving them warnings to change their behavior. If you tell them you wish for them to post less often. Then as the player to the GM, they need to listen.

Someone has already answered it and asked you to clarify what you needed. Please do not use this to ask for something to be done faster. The staff will get to it when they have the time to, as we are all real people. Please also make sure to watch your own threads for when staff reply to them.

This is more of a personal question and hard for me to answer as a whole of the staff. :P As for me personally, i'm happy with how things are now, even with all the bad and good combined.

Again this is more of a personal question that should be directed at a single few people. But as the fishy staff members... my Ocean High School, where I secretly watch all my User Senpai.

I'll have a stab at this one. ^^

Firstly, I'd say 'age' not really being a factor in roleplay. It's always been my theory that folks of all ages love the craft, but it takes a person of a certain creative mindset, with a keen imaginative eye, to really grasp on to roleplaying and geet such an enjoyment out've it. That, and all RPers are pretty much the best folks ever.

If ever there is a secret to being a good roleplayer, I believe it's this: be ever adaptive and ever learning in your roleplay and writing. If you still to one style, try to branch out. Roleplaying, like many things in life I've found, rewards those that are willing to take a leap of faith and broaden their horizons. Perhaps this isn't THE secret to being the best of the best, but it certainly can't hurt. ^^

I tend to like going for a walk or jog, listen to music, or maybe even just take a break and pick up a book - be it a new or old adventure. Sometimes a combination of the lot. Really, anything that might take your mind off of 'fighting' against writers block and give you a new perspective on things.

Rowgen said:

I can't say I've got a setting that I go to consistently. I find that setting as much as the character I would play in that setting tends to determine what I consider my 'favorite' parts of a roleplay. At the risk of sounding too vague with the former answer, I'd say fantasy in general

Firstly, I'd like a coffee if you would. Makes clobbering evil insane overlords just that much more chipper.

Secondly, I found RpNation through a frantic search on the internet. Being the picky butthead I am, I went to a handful of sites that just didn't what I was looking for. Frankly, some of them had outright hostile communities that I wasn't keen on being a part of. When I found RpNation, the site caught my eye, was fun to use, and the users - both staff and non-staff alike - were quick to welcome me into this strange roleplaying family that's grown to an insane level since even I'VE been around. (And I've only scared off a few users, I swurr. >>)

Can't really comment on favorite memories. There have been a lot of great ones, and I can't find myself putting any before the others.

As for things that annoy me - there's a whole list. Lately, however, it's been a lack of time and (my own) ability to post quickly. I can grump all day about users bugging me for posts, but the bottom line comes down to me over-joining things and not having the time I used to for roleplays. Ah, the gift and curse of adulthood and the dreaded responsibilities that plague us. xD

Search for inspiration, basically. I might explore youtube for a bit. Or read over books I haven't read already. I like to dreamlog (like, taking dreams you like and quickly writing them down after you wake up) which also gives me a bit of inspiration. o3o

Much like the pentagon, we have a team to think about such situations if they were to occur. Whether such contingency plans have been made for the event you described, I cannot reveal. However I will let you know that we are confident we can handle any situation with post count numbers syncing together and calling forth the ancient Fathialalagi entombed within the server's mainframe who desires nothing more than to consume us all.

@Moderators . I love to roleplay. And it's got to the point I'm on this sight 24/7 Do any of you have that problem to.

Also I always feel that when I'm roleplaying or in private message I'm annoying. Is there anyway you can tell if you're annoying a fellow roleplayer And there just being nice and not telling you you're annoying them, And have you ever felt that way.

I'm still responding to this, its a long answer :)

@Shura[/URL] have you ever been hurt while stunt fighting due to an accident or mishaps, such as a bad bruise, or fractured bone?
Eh I've had my fair share of bumps and bruises, One time I was sitting a little too close to some friends who were practicing and was hit in the head with a staff. It was entertaining because it looked like someone had given me a black eye. Once my partner and I blanked out in the middle of a fight and had to improvise. I earned one hell of a bruise on my arms from a missed block.

The only serious injury I have ever gotten was actually outside of practice. I had gone to do a roll but did it incorrectly, on top of that there was limestone hidden under the grass so when I hit the ground I broke my AC (acromioclavicular joint). A small area where the end of your collar bone attaches to your shoulder. That put me out of commission for a few weeks and left my shoulder a bit weak but I'm fine now. It's actually a very common shoulder injury for those in contact sports.

I also have a picture of my x-ray. Yeah... the end of my collar bone is supposed to be connected to my shoulder, hurt like hell but I know to be a hell of a lot more careful about how I do a shoulder roll.

When I first joined RpN, I was on pretty much 24/7. Let's just say it was so much so that sleep was nonexistent. (I'm so boss that way, denying sleep.)

This is a bit of a touchy subject, but I'm going to answer from my own experiences with roleplaying. I think the only time one user becomes annoying to another is when they're always pestering about posts. Friendly reminders are nice, but being bothered every hour can grind any one person. Also, a good gauge for finding where you may be bothering/annoying others is if you find that you are constantly watching your notifs or PMs for an update that may or may not come, and becoming impatient towards other users. I've always found it best to find something else to do when this happens(mostly for my own sanity xD ). Though, if you are having friendly conversation over roleplay or characters, or your excitement for whatever is going on, I can say I've never found that sort of discussion negative. :D

The meaning of life is 42.

Basically what has been said before by other staff. As long as you state beforehand your requirements in a roleplay, such as waiting for others to catch up or no controlling NPCs, and make it known by all players, then I think its reasonable to kick a user from a roleplay for consistently breaking those requirements.

I've pretty happy where I'm at in life right now. Anything I'm not happy with, I'm already in the process of changing. Moving forward is my motto, yo!

I found RpN on the best rp site's site. xD I was looking for somewhere that was Roleplay concentrated. Hmm... I can say all my favorite roleplay memories center around character interactions that were just... they were cheesecake awesome, that's what they were. I think I've only really been annoyed roleplaying when the GM wouldn't allow my character enough time to interact with other characters and would just speed the plot along for no visible reason.

Rowgen said:

I do just about any settings. Right now my favorite is a modern setting with some fantastic elements thrown into the mix. (like super heroes, paranormal critters, etc.)

I'm addicted to RpNation. Even when I'm not RPing... i'm patrolling the site.

If you feel like your annoying another, perhaps you should ask. I can't tell you if you would get an honest answer, but as long as you or the other member are not being rude or disrespectful to the other, all will be well.

As for the meaning of life... to live happily?

I find the best method to do this is to just start writing. Come up with a few key points your character needs to respond to, and then just fill in the middle

Hell yeah it is! As for your second question, I think practice is the best way to become a good roleplayer. Find the people you enjoy roelplaying with, see if they have people they enjoy roleplaying with. Every once in a while mix it up!

I feel like if I turned back time and did things different I wouldn't be the same person. I know I have made mistakes but it is living and learning from those mistakes that has changed me. So no, of course not.

My favorite roleplaying memory? Way back when I role played through MSN with my close friends I made an inadvertent dirty joke by saying "I shit on the wall" rather than "sit". xDD

Getting posted around bothers me- it basically forces your character to be quiet until everyone has spoken, because you don't want to make their posts make no sense >_>;
