Clover Lexington

Magic was a trait that had been inherited in the Lexington family long before the young heiress found out about its existence. It was always transferred from a mother to a daughter and the line was blessed with one of those in every generation. Little did Clover knew that it was an outcome of a spell cast by her predecessor in ancient times to ensure the magic coursing in their veins would outlive them all.For most of her life, Clo was not even aware it existed and had she not been going through her mother’s remnants and trinkets after moving to Ashborough, she would have died in sweet ignorance. Probably. Elizabeth Lexington was a young vital woman and she was ready to bestow her knowledge onto her daughter when the time was right. Unfortunately, she never had enough time to do so as the treacherous illness took her away from this world before she had the chance. At least her grimoire remained and the ghost of her could only hope Clover would find it.

What Elizabeth could have never expected was the power of the twin bond. It was not only the daughter this time who inherited the skills for magic. It was equally divided between both Clover and Arthur and it was the latter who actually dragged Clo to try a magic spell or two. That was how they both discovered these were not just party tricks but the real deal. And while Clover found her interest in elemental magic, AJ turned to something much more dangerous, something he himself could never fully understand. At least not if he decided to be the power-hungry dumbass. And now, magic was a permanent part of Clover’s life and she was desperate since even the tiniest spell gave her migraines for days and could destroy the whole town if she wasn’t careful enough.

With Harley back, as much as Clover was not too excited, the Circle seemed to be complete. But how could they know for sure? If their smartest cookies Kat and Monty were lost, the others had no chance of finding out. So when Elliot spoke up, his idea actually sounded promising. Monty had a little better idea then, admittedly. They indeed should try smaller spells first and so he went right for it. Kat was next and healed her burnt hand like it was nothing. After her, Aleks went and turned a bookshelf into a pool table which elicited a giggly laugh from Clover who even clapped a little.

“And even more so.” she commented after his words and then it was her turn. Clover stood up and rubbed her hands together to warm them up a little. She already knew her favorite fire worked but she needed to see the others now. With a soft exhale, she decided to use the existing source of water in a jug on the table. One of her manicured fingers pointed at the liquid and drawing small abstract pictures in the air, Clo directed it over the pool table. Fingers of her both hands wiggled as she formed the individual drops into different shapes. Once satisfied with her creation, she brought her hands together and created a small bowl out of her palms, blowing towards her little work. The water drops hanging in the air turned into ice within seconds and a beautiful intricate chandelier was hanging over the pool table now. “I’d say we’re good here.” she smirked, brushing non-existent dust off her palms theatrically.

Elliot Prescott

There were a few things that only happened very rarely with Elliot and him being quiet was definitely on top of that list. His mouth hardly ever stopped yapping and if it did, there had to be a really good reason for it. And while his magic was possibly the best thing that ever happened to him, it was also the source of his gloomy and grim mood, especially after the things went to hell. Not being able to use his spells properly was a big blow to his mood and ego and without them, Elliot felt naked. He felt like he was back in the foster home where the other kids were literally preying on him since he was usually the tiniest, the skinniest and the most fragile kid out there. Magic gave him the feeling he was stronger, it gave him purpose and the idea that after all, there was something special about him. And then it was basically gone.

Or rather, it went bonkers. After creating quite a few bloodthirsty zombie dogs or birds with broken wings, El gave up and truly thought his witcher days were over. Only then he found out that his friends were struggling with their powers as well and it was clear something was not right. Elliot was not a dumbass but he never really liked hitting the books. So when Kat and Monty started going through the books willingly, El was only too glad they had the situation firmly in their hands. Maybe somewhere deep inside he knew that he should have done more but then again, if those two couldn’t figure the prophecy out, what chance did he really stand to have any more luck?

However, now that Harley was back, it seemed that they might just get lucky and finish this circle thing up. But how? Every time they managed to solve a question, another three popped up and it was beginning to be tiring. Elliot was not famous for his saint patience and it was now running out, leaving only a dangerously thin layer on the bottom. His explosion might come any day now and only the fact that he could hurt someone he cared about was stopping him from spewing poisonous words all around. Because fucking ancestors, what the fuck did they even want these kids to do? And then it hit him. Ancestors. Why not ask them directly?

Bringing the dead back or at least for long enough to talk to them reasonably was a complicated spell. Elliot would be able to handle it but he needed his magic to be 100%. Which it wasn’t. Monty came up with a good idea to give their powers a little test drive and went first, ending up with a shocked expression on his face after he touched Harley. Just what exactly did he see that frightened him so much? When Kat approached the fireplace, El almost jumped up to pull her away but then he only clenched his jaw, watching her hurt herself deliberately. But she was soon able to heal the injury and her hand was good as new. Aleks went next and created a new source of fun for the library, one Elliot appreciated much more than just stacks of books after stacks of books. “Dude…” he whistles with a sly grin. Clover added her icy piece and it was now Elliot’s turn. Looking around, he was searching for something that could help him but there were only a couple of flies near the window. The boy got to his feet and swiftly snatched them both, squeezing them in the palm of his hand until there was no life left in the poor insect. He then opened his palm, inspected his work and covered it with the other hand, muttering a few words that always came to him automatically. And indeed, once he opened the hands, both flies spiraled up, full of life as if nothing ever happened to them. “It seems like all is back to normal. I’d say let’s give it a go. Monty, my boy, come over here. You’re gonna be my anchor to the real world. And you guys…” he looked at Kat, Aleks and Clover. “You just be ready. If anything goes wrong…” he offered them a sad look. They all knew what had to be done. If the land of the dead was trying to take over, Elliot was ready to contain it all. From the inside of hell itself. They just needed to cut him off his anchor.

Although Harley was more than happy to go by Elliot's suggestion, Monty had the idea that they should each try something smaller first, to ensure their powers wouldn't go haywire. Or at least, that's what Harley gathered from what Monty said about their powers settling. The magic was creating a thrill in Harley, unlike anything she'd ever experienced before. Could this be real? It had to be, she'd seen it with her very eyes. Doubt plauged her mind, but as she watched the others display their powers one by one, she knew that there was no room for that doubt anymore. Which only meant that the fire she'd seen at the bonfire, the fire that had been coming right for her... that had been magic as well. Her own? Someone elses? There was no way it was a party trick.

Elliot was the last to go, and Harley's eyes watched the flies as they buzzed away from Elliot's hands until she couldn't see them anymore. "Wow." She breathed, lowering her head, looking at the beautifully intricate chandelier above the brand new pool table. It was all so incredible, but the mood in the room grew slightly more sober as Elliot pulled Monty in to be his anchor. His dark words directed towards the other three made the hairs on the back of Harley's neck stand up, and she moved closer to them. "What does he mean?" She asked, her voice soft as she looked back at Monty and Elliot. "If anything goes wrong?" She asked, hating the way her voice sounded small, even to her own ears. The mood in the room had definitely shifted, and there was a darkness surrounding them suddenly.

It was Monty who answered, though Harley didn't particularly like his answer. "We're here for you, El." Without even really realizing what she was doing, she reached out, taking the hand of the person next to her. It was Kat, and Harley shot her what she hoped was a reassuring smile before she looked back at Elliot. Giving him a slight nod, she squeezed Kat's hand at the same time, trying to draw strength from her friend. Harley had been the one who'd had to be strong for so long, and that hadn't changed, but even she wasn't stupid enough to not realize they were messing with serious shit here. If anything went wrong, indeed.

It seemed that Monty was just meant to be embarrassed tonight, though granted, that wasn't far from the normal for the shy nerd. He wasn't sure if Harley knew what he saw, but he definitely wasn't going to say anything out loud about it. He mumbled that it was Kat's turn, and he watched with clenched teeth as she harmed herself in the fire. Alek went next, then Clover, and finally, Elliot. The magic seemed to flow freely in the library room, calm and soothing, far from the tumultuous way it had been for months now. Monty looked over at Harley, a small smile tugging at his lips as Elliot released the flies from his hands. They really were a circle now; how could he have not figured it out sooner? But he hadn't known, none of them had known Harley would complete them. Well, now they knew.

Even though Monty had his doubts about what Elliot wanted to do, he had to admit that asking their ancestors might give them better answers than any of the tombs in here could. So when Elliot called upon Monty to be his anchor, he simply nodded and headed over to let Elliot use him as needed. Harley spoke up, wanting to know what Elliot meant, but it was Monty who answered. "Sometimes dealing with the dead can be... tricky." Monty explained, or tried to, without creating a panic in her or any of the others. "But don't worry, Elliot knows what he's doing." Harley didn't look completely convinced, but maybe that was because Monty himself wasn't fully convinced. But what other choice did they have at this time? They needed answers, and they needed them fast before shit went haywire again.

Drawing in a shaky breath, Monty looked around at each of his friends before he let his gaze fall back on Elliot. "You're not leaving us." Monty whispered, reaching up to clasp his friend's shoulder. "So don't... don't even think about it." Trying to sound braver than he felt, he just turned to stand side by side with Elliot so that he could still see the others. He'd meant what he said, dealing with the dead could be tricky. Sometimes the dead didn't want to stay dead, and once you opened that door, there was no telling what you might unleash. It was like a bunch of kids playing with a ouija board and unleashing a demon. Swallowing heavily, Monty closed his eyes for a moment before he reopened them. "Okay. I'm ready."

The history of magic in Ashborough was as fascinating to Katarina as it was mysterious. There were families like Clover's that have a long history of magic passed from mother to daughter, and the occasional son it would seem, so much so that it had become a part of them. Alexsander's family was similar, a long line of warlocks who pass their magic capabilities and knowledge on to only their sons. But then there were situations like Katarina or Elliot, even Monty and now Harley. For those that didn't know their parents, it was nearly impossible to trace their magical ancestry. Were they somehow born with these powers spontaneously? Did their parents or grandparents or some other ancestors have magic that was then passed on to them? Katarina had searched through all the archives and genealogy records that she could. But her mother and grandparents were immigrants, and there was little that could be done to track down any information from the old country, especially anything magic related.

Though her palm was entirely healed, the faint phantom pain sensation still stung a bit. Glancing back at her friends, she could tell that her actions had caused a bit of nervousness. Monty and Elliot had clenched jaws, and the latter looked like he was about to jump up after her. But both thankfully stayed put, either because they trusted her enough to know that she knew what she was doing, or because they didn't want to get caught in the crosshairs if something happened to go wrong. Whatever the case, they moved on to Aleks, then Clover, and finally Elliot. Everyone was accounted for, 'smaller' magic was successful despite a thudding headache that still existed behind her eyes. It was only logical to take the next step. As much as she hated the idea of Elliot attempting to contact the dead after so long of restraining himself made her nervous, Kat knew she had to trust him. After all, he was the best at dealing with the dead.

As much as Katarina loved her friends, Elliot included, these past few months with uncontrollable magic had led to a change in dynamic. In her eyes, there had been some sort of silent agreement made. That if ever one of them got out of control, the others would do what they had to. It was brutal and barbaric. But until they knew more or how to control it, it was necessary. Katarina nodded at Elliot, offering him a comforting smile. She felt a hand in hers and turned to find Harley offering her a comforting smile. Turning, she reached over and grabbed Clover's hand, linking them. They would have to be a united front if something went wrong and they needed to band together to face it. But, that was a big if. Truthfully, she wasn't quite sure what she would do if she lost El. Though their friendship was largely built on art and unreturned flirtations, the brunette knew that he was important to her. She just couldn't bring herself to admit it. Kat turned her attention back to Elliot. "We're here if you need us."

The cool wood beneath his fingertips gave Aleksander a new sense of hope. He stared at the pool table before him, complete with green felt, two pool cues, and a set of smooth resin pool balls. Not only had he shaped the wood, but he converted the materials as well. That was a big feat, especially considering the lack of successful transmutation or control over such he had experienced for a while. Maybe that meant he could get back to doing what he did best, and maybe Katarina could finally completely heal the transmutation wound in his leg that still bothered him every now and again. His hand slid across the felt as he moved around the table, pausing for just a moment longer before returning to where the rest of the group stood. He grinned at Clover's giggle, nodding at her claps and Elliot's whistle. "I do what I can to make this place a home, you know?" he teased, knowing full well that a pool table was far more 'man cave' than it was 'home.'

Watching Clover work her water magic was so different than the usual fire. Though the fire was much more her personality, the water was nice ever once in a while. Soft, cool, calm. Things that he usually wasn't. It was kind of reminiscent of their relationship. Most of the time, fiery. Hot on one hand, destructive on the other. But, the cycle would eventually turn into the honeymoon period again, like they were in then, and be just as great as the first time they ever got together. That being said, Aleks couldn't help but feel like every time the cycle turned, a piece of them shattered. They could never get back to what they were as a first-time couple in high school. And he wasn't sure he ever wanted to anyway. The ice formed into a chandelier above the pool table he had just created, and Aleks let out a low chuckle. "See, I knew I was missing something. This room definitely needed a woman's touch," he added, still teasingly sarcastic.

The others tested their magic and everything seemed good to go. Even Elliot's reanimation of the flies. Everything seemed to be perfectly set in stone so that the night couldn't possibly go wrong. That being said, they had safeguards in place. Katarina had lined the library with runes, adding to the ones that had been placed before their time. They were effectively sealed in but had to stop the things that might leach out on the inside. Sigils and runes were powerful and helpful, but could only hold in so much. If Elliot had to... No, Aleks didn't even want to think about that. El was his best friend and the thought of potentially losing him to all this. He wouldn't let that happen. "We got this bro," Aleks said, offering his friend a grin. He clapped him on the shoulder as he moved past, stopping to stand alongside Clover. He took her other free hand in his, connecting the four of them. The feeling of their combined magic made his palm tingle, but he was used to it by now. They had to stay together if this was going to work.

Clover Lexington

Magic usually looked so easy. All the shows presented it as a little spell here, a little gesture there, use your wand, use the cauldron, do this, do that and voila. All those magicians kept repeating their awkward party tricks, pulled rabbits out of their hats, pigeons were flying all over while they were pulling an endless string of scarves from their sleeves. Clover had always found them annoying and embarrassing, even before she discovered her own magic. And after learning several real spells, the magicians were placed even lower, classified as people with absolutely no sense of self-preservation. However, the brunette soon found out that magic was not just a few funny words, rainbows and unicorns. It was draining and extremely challenging, required steel focus and the spells needed to be exact or else the consequences could be catastrophic. Especially when working with elemental magic like hers. One wrong word and she could bury the whole town of Ashborough under an avalanche or remove it from the map with a random earthquake.

Having her magic go wild was hard for the young Lexington heiress. Clover was used to things going her way. Everything she ever decided to do, it just happened for her. Control was her middle name and she always held it firmly in her hands. Even after moving to the States, she simply knew that being a nobody wouldn’t do. It only took her a few weeks to assume her position of top, surrounded by a small group of minions who were ready to serve any purpose for their ruler. Control was natural to everyone with the last name Lexington, so when Clover lost hers over magic, she was barely herself and that indirectly led to more and more arguments with Aleks. It made her snappy and way meaner than usual, especially if she accidentally managed to burn her hair extensions (it only happened ONCE!) or caused the water pressure to go wild at home, turning her sink into a fountain.

But it sure seemed that everything went back to normal now, her water magic worked and while it was only a small spell, definitely not a defensive one, it worked perfectly. Now it was time for the hard part and while she was not the one to summon the dead, the churning feeling in her stomach was still very much present. A warm touch surprised her when Kat took her hand and Clover gave her a soft squeeze. The girl was a complete opposite of the brunette and quite frankly, she was the calming element in Clover’s life. Kat was one of the very few, maybe even the only one, who could calm down Clover’s fire. And not the one coming out from her palms. Now that their hands were linked, Clo felt a little calmer, certainty entered her heart and she knew she was not alone. Then Aleks closed the circle, taking her other hand and she laced their fingers, letting out a soft exhale. The four of them, with Harley as well, stood there and watched Elliot get ready. He was nervous, that much was obvious. Not even the Queen of Snark had anything to say so she just stood there and nodded in encouragement.

And when it happened, when Elliot made his little party trick and a swirl of smoke appeared in front of them, Clover’s breath shook and her grip on Aleks’ hand tightened. Their magic surged through them all, Clover felt it buzz in her palms and while her face was still an impenetrable fortress, her hands shook slightly and her heart raced, afraid of what might happen next. For the first time in forever, the Ice Queen didn't feel invincible.

Elliot Prescott

With a background like his, Elliot had learned a long time ago that things are not permanent and he should not get used to anything because nothing was here forever. In the words of Michelle Jones, expect disappointment and you won’t be disappointed. It was part of Elliot’s creed for life. He never got adopted, only watched tens of other kids leave with their new families. He never had anything until he literally fought for it and even after that, older kids beat the shit out of him to steal his little trinkets. With the label of an orphan, he was placed in the box of kids who were never going to make it in life and with that sort of attitude everyone had ever given him, how was he even supposed to find the motivation to do anything with his life? And then he discovered his magic which only confirmed his strong belief that nothing, literally not one thing in the world is forever. Just death.

It wasn’t easy to propose his idea and it was even harder to actually do it. Elliot was not usually the problem-solver here, quite the contrary. Kat and Monty were the smart kids and as selfish as it was, El mostly steered out of their way, serving as the muscle here. However, this time, it was all up to him, his skill, strength, control and also a proper portion of luck. With a firm voice, he distributed the tasks, masking his own concerns. Messing up with the dead people was dangerous enough on his own but now he was about to drag everyone else in his black hole and that was no fun. The responsibility was weighing down on him but El had learned how to pretend a long time ago. The playful, almost indifferent smirk was tugging on his lips as he nodded at Monty first, then at Aleks, appreciating their support. Even Clover kept her mouth shut and that was really something. Elliot turned to see each and every face, staring in the eyes of all his friends, Monty last. “Appreciate you, man. For doing this.” he murmured at the nerd and then looked in the distance, closing his eyes.

Elliot’s lips parted after a while and words started to come out. However, it was far from English. Latin spells and phrases curled on his lips as Elliot slowly but surely opened the gate. Dark smoke surged through, curling and swirling in the air and El opened his eyes. His heart was slamming against his ribcage but he kept on mumbling his spells until the smoke materialized. It kept turning around, creating curves of a figure in front of them while more smokey snakes emerged behind it. Elliot felt the pull towards the gate but he pressed his heels to the ground. It kept tugging on him, he felt it deep in his guts and clenched his jaw, squeezing the end of the spell though it. His hand flew up and gripped Monty’s shoulder, tightening the grip real soon. Five people were standing in front of them, five people holding onto Elliot and his magic, basically feeding of his energy. He had never summoned more than two at the same time and now he had five.

“Kitty Kat, ask your questions.” he spoke, his tone slightly strained. He didn’t want to usher her or anything but in his mind, he hoped she would because this was harder than he expected. His head was already in pain, he felt pressure in it and the migraine was creeping up his spine, his insides felt like on fire and his fingers dug deep in Monty’s shoulder. “We only have a few minutes, doll, make them count.” he hissed as all five figures of their ancestors, men and women from before them, now stood in line, growling and growling at six kids who thought it was a good idea to disturb the dead.

The show of magic that went around the room fascinated Harley. She vividly remembered times when she was younger where she would play pretend, both with her friends and alone, and a witch had been among her favorite things to be. Along with a mermaid, but that was beyond the point. According to the group, she wouldn't have been allowed into the library if she wasn't magical herself, and she hadn't forgotten the fire at the party and how she'd felt inside when it happened. Like her very blood burned in an unfamiliar yet familiar way... like she was meant for greatness. A small part of her still felt as though she were playing pretend, but seeing Kat stick her hand into the fire and come out unharmed, and watching Alek create a pool table, Clover conjure a beautiful chandelier, and Elliot bring a few flies back to life-- it had all been proof to her that this was not pretend.

Now they all stood linked in one way or another, watching as Monty stood by Elliot to be his anchor. They all sent Elliot words of encouragement, and he closed his eyes. When he spoke, the words were unrecognizable to Harley, a language she didn't know. Latin, she thought, though she didn't know it. She didn't have much time to focus on that before her eyes caught sight of the air swirling between them, becoming darker until shadows replaced the air. Her breath caught in her throat and her grip on Kat's hand tightened, but somehow she knew better than to let go. Elliot kept murmuring the spell but Harley remained focused on the smoke, watching with wide eyes as it began to take form. Forms, she corrected herself a moment later. Multiple people.

They didn't seem happy to be there. Elliot ground his words out, telling Kat to ask her questions because they only made a few minutes. Harley glanced over to the girl beside her, but then a familiar voice called her name. Instantly, the blood drained from Harley's face and her head slowly turned, her eyes landing on the smoky figure nearest her. "Mom?" She whispered, taking a half step in her direction before Monty told her to stop. Her gaze jumped to him and she saw the pain in his eyes, but the smoky figure moved, drawing her attention back to it. Harley recognized the woman from her younger memories, before she and her father left. Before the woman signed away her rights and stopped caring. "Why are you here?" Harley whispered, trying to swallow the lump that formed in her throat.

"You and your friends have questions." The ghost of her mother smiled sadly. "And we can perhaps answer them."

Monty meant his words to Elliot. As far as Monty was concerned, he would do everything in his power to ensure that Elliot didn't leave them and join the figures he was about to invite. Monty also knew that their friends felt the same way he did. They would do everything they could to save Elliot if shit went south. But who would be the one to call it when the line was about to be crossed? Glancing over at the others, Monty couldn't see any of them wanting to let Elliot-- or any of them-- go. But someone would have to do it. Shoving those thoughts from his mind for now, Monty glanced back at Elliot when he heard his whispered words. "Of course, man." Monty whispered back, a note of surprise in his voice that he couldn't help. What else would he do? Run away screaming? Okay, point taken.

The process began, and Monty swallowed back his fear, especially as the smoke began to swirl in the air. Bad idea, bad idea, this was a bad idea... The thought kept swirling in his mind as the smoke crept through the air, slowly becoming people shaped. Goosebumps crept down Monty's spine as the growling echoed in his ears, and suddenly the thought of running and/or hiding didn't seem like such a bad thing to do. But he couldn't-- wouldn't-- leave Elliot. Or the rest of them. So even though he wanted to throw himself under that pool table, he didn't move. Not that he could after Elliot reached up and grabbed his shoulder, squeezing so tight that Monty knew he was going to have finger shaped bruises there. His mouth opened in a silent cry of pain, his face twisting into a grimace, but he still didn't run.

And then one of the figures spoke. Not a growl, but an actual word. Calling out to Harley. Monty's eyes snapped over to her just as she started to take a step towards the ghost of her dead mother. "Harley, no!" She thankfully stopped, not breaking the connection that could possibly have been achoring them all. Breathing out a sharp breath, Monty looked to Kat as Elliot told her to ask her questions, though his eyes darted back to Harley when her mother spoke again. Suddenly Monty was staring at the other ghostly figures, wondering if he'd see... but he didn't. None of them even closely resembled his brother. Feeling a sudden weight in his chest, he forced himself to look back at the others instead. Maybe they should have figured out the questions beforehand. "What's going on with the magic going haywire?" He asked suddenly, cringing as one of those smoky ghosts floated in his direction.

"The circle..." It hissed, stopping right in front of Monty and Elliot. "...needed to be complete. And now it is..."

Though Katarina felt as though she had watched Elliot use his powers millions of times, mostly before magic had gone awry in Ashborough, this felt different. This was different. This was not only risking his life but theirs as well. She could feel her heart race in her chest, but she kept her anxiety to herself as best as she could. Each member of the Circle was impressive in their own way, and Kat couldn't help but be stunned by each of them when she saw the power they possessed. Apart, the Circle members were forces to be reckoned with. But together? They were an unstoppable, unmovable force. Despite all that, however, they were still young, still trying to figure out who they were, both as people, and as magicians. The brunette looked over at Clover, offering her what she hoped was a comforting smile. There was no turning back now.

Kat turned her turquoise blue gaze back to Elliot, listening to the ancient language that fell from his lips. The incantation had a strangely calming effect on her, so much so that she felt her racing heart begin to slow. There was a sharp buzz in her palm, almost as if she was getting electrocuted but not necessarily painful. And then the murky smoke began to swirl around the room, bringing with it a sense of being. They weren't alone any longer. Five forms began to appear, and Kat felt her eyes widen. That was a lot of energy being parasitized from Elliot. She only hoped they could get their answers quickly before something went horribly wrong. The brunette flinched when she heard the nickname he had for her. With a nod, she zeroed in on the five specters in front of them. They were most certainly not happy that their eternal rest had been interrupted. Her lips parted to speak, to ask their questions. But before she could, a soft voice spoke up. "Mom?"

Katarina couldn't help the look of shock that crossed her face. Harley had focused in on a woman she bared a striking resemblance to, and the brunette realized that one of the ghosts was her mother. So, Harley's mother was a member of the previous Circle? That was certainly an interesting revelation. Kat could tell she wanted to go to her mother, but Monty stopped her. They could break the chain, not while Elliot was still under. Monty spoke up then, asking a question of his own to one of the murky figures. She felt herself nodding, not backing down with another one of the figures stopped in front of her. She couldn't quite make out who or what it was, but it got close to her as if to see into her soul. She stared back with an unwavering gaze, despite the fear she felt. "Yes, Harley has returned to complete the Circle. But magic is still going crazy. What do we have to do to officially 'complete the Circle?'" she asked, her tone even. Without another word, the shadow wisped away to explore a bit more. And she let out a breath of relief.

Another one spoke up then, materializing into an older man with a long gray beard and glasses. He seemed to scrutinize each one of them for a moment, almost as if he was judging if they were worthy to hear the answer. If she were being honest with herself, Katarina didn't think of herself as worthy. Of magic, of love, of anything. Despite the sweetheart persona she had on the outside, the inside was much darker, much more guilt-ridden and sad. But she didn't let people see that side of her, not even those closest to her. What would they think of her if they knew who she was, what she had done? They would hate her, at least that's what she told herself. A deep voice broke her from her thoughts, and the bearded man spoke. "You read the prophecy, I assume. But you paid too much attention to the words, and not enough to the imagery," he said, his booming voice filling the room. "What you need is a ceremony, a binding rune for each of you created in the darkest form of magic." Those words struck a chord in her heart, sent ice down her veins, and Katarina couldn't stop herself from saying that word. "Blood."

The air in the room seemed to become heavy, and maybe it was. Magic, even in its invisible form, had a way of taking form and filling space. There was tension settling heavily on Aleksander's chest, either from that feeling or his worry. It had been a while, months since they had used magic so openly and with such purpose. And even then, it was bits and pieces, not something so powerful. Honestly, Aleks had forgotten a bit about how powerful his friends were. With Elliot's chanting and the wisps of shadow that began to curl around the room, the energy was tangible. His light brown eyes follow the movement in awe, for a moment forgetting how dangerous what they were doing was. But all of that came crashing back as soon as he heard the strain in Elliot's voice, seeing the grip he held on Monty's shoulder. The vibrating energy he felt in his palm almost felt painful now, as they harnessed the excess magic in the room and prevented it from going haywire. There was no going back now.

Harley's voice cut through the room, even though it was just a whisper. And Aleksander immediately felt his heart clench. Despite his anger toward her, the shock and sadness in her made him want to go to her, to hug her, and tell her that everything would be okay. But he couldn't. Not because of that anger, but because any sort of change to the fragile balance of the room could be absolutely disastrous. Growing up together, Aleks knew her mother. Maybe not well, but enough to know that seeing her again probably hurt Harley far more than she was letting on. But they couldn't break the chain, so she wasn't able to approach her mother. Instead, the questions began. Elliot was right, they had no idea how long this magic would last. They couldn't get sidetracked, no how much it hurt. The dark figures continued to move around the room, maybe investigating the place they used to roam. But truthfully, he thought they were just doing it to be intimidating.

Monty's questions elicited an answer, though one that wasn't entirely helpful. The redhead felt a fit of anger boiling up in his body, like lava traveling through his veins. He wanted to say something snarky back, sarcastic and annoyed. But any false move, and he could accidentally transmutate Clover, who still gripped his hand. There was so much riding on this that the pressure of it all was starting to go to his head. And while he might have performed well under pressure on the field, this was different. Risking a career or a game was nothing compared to the lives that were at stake at that moment. Thankfully Katarina took that time to ask questions of her own, to get actual answers. But they weren't exactly the ones she or the rest of the Circle were hoping for. "Blood," Aleks repeated in disbelief. "You can be serious. That's dangerous. We could all be killed just for attempting that. Or worse." The dark wisps didn't seem to care. Weren't these figures their ancestors and supposed to be helpful? The bearded one's gaze slid over to Aleks, indifferent to his words as he easily responded in a matter-of-fact tone, "It's a good thing you have help then, isn't it? Do you want to fix the magic in your world or not?"

Clover Lexington

There were times when even Clover herself knew that her resting bitch face had to recede and make way for focus and effort. This was one of those times. The Circle needed help, they needed answers and they needed control. No one had any of those and Clover was starting to be tired of all that focus she put in even the most minor spells she cast in order not to cause a forest fire or a tornado. Now there was a chance to calm all these mishaps down and find the answers they had been looking for forever and not even Kat and Monty were able to find them. The chance was now, right in front of them, Elliot was giving them an extraordinary advantage so they simply had to use it. But the spell was difficult and the four of them had to hold their protection up until Elliot was done. Clover felt her hands on fire, thankfully not literally, but the buzzing soon turned into unpleasant tingles and sensations which felt like there were thousands of needles piercing her skin.

A few shadowy figures appeared in front of them and the sight of them removed all color from Clover’s face. She felt anxious and her stomach tightened just as her grip on Aleksander's hand did. Her boyfriend was the only certainty she wanted to rely on now and it took everything in her not to let go of Kat’s hand and hide on Aleks’ broad hard chest. Her thoughts were running wild and only one thing tore her out of her reverie. Harley’s voice. Clover blinked a few times, unable to believe the word she heard. Mom? Her blue gaze found Harley and then skipped to the ghost of a woman she had addressed and her jaw almost fell. Talk about plot twist!

And yet, plot twists were not over. If Clover thought seeing Harley’s mom was the only surprise awaiting them, she was sorely mistaken. Elliot told Kat to ask questions and the girl went right for it. When the answer came, it took them all aback. “Blood?” Clo whispered and felt trembles take over her. She had heard about blood magic before but never done it herself. Her memories immediately took her way back to the beginning when she discovered magic. When she and AJ discovered magic. And while Clover satiated her hunger with elemental spells, AJ wanted more. He craved more power, studied branches of magic which were borderline dangerous and at one point, he approached Clover to help him with a few spells. Clover agreed but once she saw the spells and realized what they were, she was out faster than lightning. And now, these spirits of the circle past wanted her and her friends to enter that territory? “What help, grandpa? From you? I don’t see that happening since guess what, you are all dead.” she spat in annoyance. “How are we even supposed to do that?”

Elliot Prescott

Necromancy was not what Elliot would have chosen if ever given a chance to select his magical gifts but since it was his little party trick, he had to make do with it. Whether as a person or as a warlock, he was also never seen as extremely important or essential. He was not the smartest, not the most exact in his spells and in general, his magic was not the best for usual day-to-day activities. And yet, it was now that he was the most essential wheel in this whole machinery of fixing the Circle and he grabbed the chance. It was obvious that this little shenanigan was going to take a lot from him but he was also more than sure that his friends had his back. So when everyone was ready, Elliot gripped Monty and mumbled the spell which opened the portal to the Underworld, bringing a few gray wisps out to tell them what to do, to share their knowledge and impart wisdom.

Harley’s voice sounded when she recognized one of the ghosts as her mother and Elliot was so surprised he almost broke the spell. Instead, he groaned, gripped poor Monty harder, sure to leave marks on the poor guy, and hoped someone was going to interfere. Harley couldn’t break the chain. Not now. Fortunately, Monty took care of it and it was now time to ask questions. And Kat should do it fast because El himself had no idea how long he could hold the spell. His knees were shaky and getting weaker now and he could feel the claws of the Underworld reaching for him, trying to pull him in.

Kat asked about fixing the Circle and one of the old men answered her. Elliot closed his eyes, tears formed in their corners and slowly made their way down his cheeks. The focus was taking its toll on him as it had to be harder than steel, considering the state of magic. Elliot tried to push his feet into the ground to root himself there but he also felt his strength running out. The others were talking to the spirits but the necromancer himself couldn’t listen to that, not when he needed to hold them here for long enough. He had no idea how long it took, in his mind, it was three hours later that he conjured the portal. “Fuck…” he hissed and his free hand reached for Monty’s, holding onto his friend for dear life. More tears came out, accompanied with groans and hisses of a tired warlock who was reaching way too deep in the jar of his powers. Until there was nothing left to grab. Hoping Kat got everything she needed out of the ghosts, Elliot used the last specks of his strength and mumbled the closing spell. Spirits slowly dissipated in the air with a soft hiss and the portal was closed. And Elliot finally let go of Monty, crumbling down to the ground, as darkness enveloped him.
