The sun was just beginning to set on the horizon, painting the sky in beautiful shades of pinks and oranges. The electric streetlamps in the style of turn-of-the-century oil lamps began to flick on, illuminating the blocked-off city streets in a yellowish glow. Tourisits and citizens of Ashborough alike milled about the streets. Some were idly chatting, others were playing the likely-rigged carnival games, and many were waiting in lines at the food carts for some delicious treats. Down the road a bit was a set of carnival rides, the kind that come into town on the back of semi-trucks and disappear in the middle of the night. They weren't exactly the safest, but those waiting in line for them didn't quite seem to care. The happy screams of children filled the air, putting the final touch on the perfect atmosphere. It was the annual Ashborough Fall Festival, a combination of a food truck rally, carnival, and flea market decorated in honor of the autumnal spooky season.

Katarina Lundgren stood in one of the market stalls with a hot chocolate in one hand, sipping absentmindedly as she browsed. The tables were lined with various pieces of jewelry and crystals. Most of the geodes were fake, but some were real and held properties potentially beneficial in certain rituals. The brunette didn't usually dabble in solely crystal magic. But they helped enhance some of the runes now and again. If she were being honest, her mind was elsewhere. The town hall meeting had concluded just moments before, and its primary focus still troubled her. Things were getting out of hand, and the mundanes had begun to notice. It started small, a light rune burning a little too bright or a speed rune giving her whiplash. But over the past few weeks, the magic got progressively worse. Growth runes caused plants to propagate out of control, and strength runes practically turned her into Superman. It was overwhelming, to say the least.

As much as she tried to understand what was going on, nothing made sense. And, from what she heard, the others were having similar problems. Kat had been so concerned with her magic that she didn't feel comfortable activating Alek's monthly healing rune, much to his annoyance. She might overdo it and injure him more, and Katarina was not about to risk that. Ever since her mother's death, she had been incredibly specific about her magic. She was convinced that she wouldn't be able to live with herself were she to cause the end to another life. The way the flames licked up the sides of her childhood home, the heat burning her skin, and the brightness searing her retinas. The suffocating feeling of smoke entering her lungs. Kat squeezed her turquoise blue eyes shut, forcing those memories to return to the back of her mind. Her heart had begun to race, and she could feel the threat of hyperventilation in her chest.

"Are you alright, sweetheart?" the gentle voice caught her off-guard, and Kat found herself looking over at the older woman sitting behind the table she browsed. The woman had long, dark hair and gentle green eyes, concern clearly written in them. Realizing a single tear had fallen down her cheek, Katarina forced a smile and nodded her head. "Yes, sorry, just got lost in my thoughts for a moment. I'll take two of these, please," she answered, pointing to the jagged black tourmaline shards on the counter. If nothing else, she could use them in conducting spiritual contact runes to hopefully keep the negative spirits at bay. The woman nodded, grabbing two of the larger ones and slipping them into a paper bag. Exchanging money for the bag, Kat offered her a timid smile before turning to exit. Just as she reached the edge of the booth, the woman said, "I hope you'll stop blaming yourself one day."

To say Katarina was surprised was an understatement. She bit down on the inside of her cheek, forcing herself to keep as calm as she possibly could. Without a word, she turned to look at the woman and simply nodded, unsure of how to respond. Overwhelmed with too many emotions at that moment, Kat turned to leave, walking away rather quickly. She made her way to a quiet, crowdless area near the main street shops that had already closed for the evening. Tossing the now empty paper cup into a nearby trash can, she placed the paper bag in her purse and replaced it with a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. Placing a cancer stick between her pink-painted lips, Katarina lit the end and inhaled deeply. If she couldn't count on her own anti-anxiety runes, she could at least count on the sweet feeling of nicotine coursing through her bloodstream and calming her heart. Nevertheless, something had to be done about the unpredictable magic, and soon.

The smells of delicious food filled the air, swirling around the generator-fueled food carts and trucks as the workers within moved hastily to put out order after order. The air and noise pollution emitted from the stationary vehicles certainly didn't seem to deter the people of the Ashborough Fall Festival as the lines were nearly wrapped around the block. One truck was rapidly putting out all types of fried desserts, from deep-fried oreos and twinkies to funnel cakes and churros. Across the way, there was BBQ fusion, with brisket nachos and pulled pork empanadas. And for those looking for something sweet and chilly, a gelato truck that also sold fresh-squeezed lemonade. There were so many options that it could be hard to choose. In fact, so many customers were stopping by multiple trucks to try all the treats.

Aleksander Strand already held a funnel cake in one hand as he waited in line at the gelato cart for a lemonade. He idly picked at the fried dough, having chosen a classic powdered sugar topping over any of the fruits or sauces that were offered. He told himself that he was somehow making a healthier choice when in reality the fried dough was just as calorie-rich as any other fried dough. And to be honest, it didn't really matter. Alek spent the majority of his days at the gym, not only working on himself but also helping others work on themselves. As a personal trainer, it was his job to exercise and burn calories, which meant that he could pretty much eat whatever he wanted despite what he coached his clients on. An athlete from the start, some might think that made him lucky. But Alek worked hard to keep himself in shape every day, there was no luck involved. And he was proud of himself for that.

The choice of majorly unhealthy food was more of a coping mechanism, as the previous town hall meeting was still heavy on his mind. For the past few weeks, Aleksander felt as though he was going insane. Despite years of training, almost since he was six years old, he couldn't help but feel like he was slowly losing control. Any time he went to grab something, he had to concentrate just to make sure that he didn't accidentally turn it into something else. A coffee cup became a dove, a shoe became a pillow. Alek hadn't had trouble with minor transmutations since he was in high school, and out of nowhere, he felt like a kid again. And it seemed as though he wasn't the only one. Meeting up with Kat that week, she didn't feel comfortable with their usual healing process either. Something was going on, and it was starting to affect the town as well.

Finally making his way to the front of the line, Aleksander offered the girl in the truck his signature charming smile. "Just a lemonade if you would, sweetheart," he said, happily watching her cheeks tinge red. Sure, he was still with Clover, as he had been off and on since high school. But, he couldn't control the way his looks affected other girls. She nodded and poured the yellow liquid into a clear cup, handing it out to him with a shy smile. Alek's grin faltered for a moment, his brow furrowing as he stared at the cup. He forced himself to focus, reaching out to take the cup with his free hand. Thankfully, the clear plastic remained in its original form. Glancing back up at the girl, the redheaded man could tell that his change in expression had freaked her out a bit. So he quickly offered her a "Thanks" before turning to venture back into the crowd. With that interaction alone, Alek lost all appetite and dumped the funnel cake into a nearby trash can. He was tired of worrying about losing control, but he didn't know what could be done to change it. For now, he would just have to live with it.

Clover Lexington
Smell of the fall and fried carnival food filled the air and carried the scents far and wide. Once again, it was that time of the year hitting Ashborough, Washington. The spooky season was fully on now and people started with their annual decorations of the front porches and yards, competing among the neighbors who was going to bring out the tackiest Halloween this year. They had it all, from rather neat pumpkin patches and fake spiderwebs to plastic skeletons, bedsheet ghosts and weirdly cackling witches flying on their brooms hanging from the roof.

If you asked Clover, she was not a fan. Sure, she loved a good Halloween party and the season as such was awesome but all that stuff people were spending their money for only to say their yard was more appealing to the eager trick-or-treaters was just cheap and annoying. In Clo’s own words, it was exhausting to watch. She was simply too posh, too British for something like a carved pumpkin even though they always had some at home every year. Whether in London or here, in Ashborough.

Her family never really did anything like that though. They never went over the board with it, mostly because if her dad’s assistant didn’t write to his planner that it was Halloween, Thadeus Lexington would never even know. Just like this year. His staff was taking care of the annual Lexington Halloween party while he was working. And his one and only daughter was making her way towards the fair to meet her friends.

Clicks her thigh high black suede boots were making on the pavement slowly dissolved when she stepped off the concrete and joined the eager crowd among the food trucks. Clover wrinkled her nose over the smell of burnt oil and just imagining the amount of calories made her shudder. Not that she was only eating so-called rabbit food but you know, she did not earn her figure while stuffing her face full of fried oreos. But today, there was something else on her mind than ignoring sweet treats. The frown line between her brows was getting deeper with every passing second and her fingers were tightly wrapped around the handles of her Birkin bag. Her other hand was also balled into a fist as Clover couldn’t risk anything.

As thrilled as she was to find out she came from a line of witches, she was terrified now because her magic was misbehaving. No one ever trained her and everything Clo knew was what she learned from her mother’s grimoire but she already perfected the small simple spells. But now, even those could backfire and hurt people around her or even the brunette herself. What was happening, Clover had no idea but she needed to figure it out as soon as possible because at this point, she might be soon walking around as a human torch. Or whatever her magic decided to do to her.

Looking around, her bright blue eyes were looking for a friendly face in the crowd but so far, no such luck. Clover felt hot and cold at the same time, just another sign that the elements flowing in her veins were not dormant anymore. Her heart was beating fast and only years of training and perfecting her resting bitch face prevented her features turning into sappy all-over-the-place mess. Walking a bit deeper, she suddenly noticed a head of red hair among people, throwing a funnel cake into trash, and she knew immediately whom it belonged. “Thank god…” she muttered and put her signature smile on.

“Alek!” she called out and waved at her current boyfriend. They were enjoying the cute phase now, in their case, so-called silence before storm. Clover leaned closer to him, lifting herself to her toes to place a soft kiss on his lips. For a moment, she forgot how guarded she had to be and her skin became hotter than it should be. Elements inside her collided and the second she touched Alek, sparks flew. Literal sparks. Not the romantic metaphorical ones. “Damnit…!” she cursed quietly, taking a step back. “Sorry, I didn’t…ugh, I hate not being in control. You could’ve saved that funnel cake for me. I feel like stress eating.” she sighed, hesitantly reaching for his hand, not to hurt him again. But they were couple, weren’t they? People expected them to be adorable and cuddly. “Come on, let’s mingle. We can still be cute and make them jealous.” Holding her head high, Clover tugged onto Alek, never losing the sight of what was important.

Elliot Prescott
A heap of sheets shifted on the bed, covering whatever or whoever was under until a whiny voice sounded and a pale arm moved the comforter slightly aside. “But…but you promised…” the brunette pouted, lifting her slender form up, pressing the white blanket on her front. “No, kitten, I told you I gotta go, can’t stay.” Another voice joined in and another figure resurfaced from the soft pile, skin a tad darker, shaggy bed hair, body covered in numerous tattoos and a smirk curling his lips making his whole expression more than a mischievous one. “I already stayed with you for much longer than I was supposed to, candy stripper.” he winked at the girl, not able to remember her name for the world so he just nicknamed her teasingly. It apparently worked because she started to giggle like a school girl which Elliot used to press one more passionate kiss on her lips and swung his feet to the right, rolling out of the bed.

Another whiny sound left the girl’s mouth and it was one too many than Elliot could handle. Yep, she was definitely the one-night-stand material. Or in this case, one-afternoon-stand. He had somewhere else to be, or rather, he had enough and wanted to change the place of stay for now. The fall festival was already in a full swing and there was no way Elliot was going to miss it. It was his very favorite season of the year and while the group home was not the best place to celebrate it, they always took the kids trick or treating, let them make their own masks and fed them candy and a pumpkin pie. Something Elliot could stuff himself with at all times.

His naked form was stumbling around the room, looking for the individual items of his clothing. He had his shit, his pants, even the leather jacket was neatly hanging from a chair but where the fuck did he throw the boxer shorts? Had he been more attentive to the surroundings, he would have noticed the cunning, playful grin on the girl’s face. But since she stopped being interesting the second she became clingy, he just shrugged it off, not seeing it as a problem and just pulled the pants on his bare ass, making the girl gasp in surprise. That was really not something she expected.

“Have a great rest of the day, honey bear.” Elliot sent her a wink and slipped his jacket on. Only too late she realized he was truly serious about leaving and by the time she jumped out of the bed, Elliot vanished outside of her small flat, running down the stairs, taking them by two. “Fucking hell…” he mumbled and already regretted his decision to go on this kind of adventure. He should have gone to the pits, no one was clingy there. But then again, he might miss the festival then.

The faithful stallion called Honda was loyally waiting for him in front of the seedy apartment building and Elliot never wasted a second, hopped on it, not even bothering with a helmet, and sped away, never to see the girl or this building again. There was no reason anyway. He came, he saw, he fucked. Cute little brunette…Sharon or Janet or whatever. She was good. Very skilled with her lips…and body, too. A smile, or rather an impish grin twisted Elliot’s features as he remembered that tiny form on him or under him…yeah, okay, he should stop. Coming to celebrate fall with a boner was not exactly the right way. Especially when he also wanted to meet his friends there.

Checking the time once he parked among the other family furniture cars, Elliot hopped off his bike and pulled out his phone. His hand shook a little bit and he closed the grip on the device even harder, taking a deep breath in. Whatever was happening to him, it was not good and with powers like his, shit could go way too wrong. Somehow, this whole thing seemed horribly thematic. Raising the dead on Halloween. Imagine that party. Exhaling slowly, Elliot opened his hand and glanced at the phone. He really needed to occupy himself somehow before dead started to spring up wherever he went. Typing a quick text to Monty, asking where his brother and young padawan was, Elliot approached the corndog stand and with his flirty smile on, he asked for one of those delicacies.

Ashborough, Washington had not been Harley's home in quite a few years. In fact, the now twenty-one year old hadn't seen this place since she was twelve years old, and her father loaded her up in his rusted blue truck and took her away from this place. Away from the only mother she'd ever known, but truthfully, Harley wasn't that heartbroken over the woman's passing. It sounded fucked up, but how could she be sad over a woman she hardly remembered? A woman she definitely didn't know anymore, and would never get the chance to again? After Harley and her father left town, Harley could only assume her mother's drinking got worse. The few times they'd talked on the phone, she never sounded sober, and eventually she'd stopped answering at all.

But in her will, she'd left Harley the house she grew up in. No rent, no mortgage, as somehow the place had been paid off years ago. Of course, Harley couldn't get off scot-free, considering there would still be taxes and bills to pay, but that's only if she decided to keep the place. It was up to her, as her father wanted nothing to do with the home or Ashborough anymore. He said there was nothing there for him anymore, which she understood. But on a darker note, Harley knew that he was grateful she'd decided to venture off on her own, because he was tired of people giving him pity glances or even looks of disgust when they saw him with her. The photos that had been leaked of her were not PG, and definitely not what a father wanted to see of his daughter.

Swallowing back a lump that had formed in her throat, Harley shook off the negative emotions and finally pulled herself out of the driver's seat of her jeep. She'd just arrived back in Ashborough, and she'd driven past some blocked off roads that told her there was some sort of celebration going on. Probably something halloween related, which was actually Harley's favorite season. Not only was it sweater, boot, and campfire weather, but who didn't love candy and dressing up, pretending to be someone you weren't? Or, well, for some people they chose to dress up as a different version of themselves, which worked too. Since she'd just arrived, Harley hadn't gone inside her childhood home yet, and she didn't think she was quite ready. So when her feet hit the ground, she started to backtrack towards the festivities.

Tucking her hands into the pockets of her jeans, she ventured towards where the most noise seemed to be coming from. Her eyes lit up with excitement when she saw the rides and the many booths and stalls, selling everything from food to jewelry to clothing and so much more. She wanted to stop and look at everything, but everything else looked so exciting that the girl just kept on going. Eventually, she passed the main area of booths and stalls, coming to a much quieter area where there weren't as many people. She thought about turning around, but it'd been so long since she'd been here that she also wanted to see what had changed. Her eyes shifted forward, and her steps nearly faltered when she saw a familiar face. Older, sure, but familiar. "Kat?"

    dying

From underneath a pile of papers, books, and other random shit, Monty heard his phone go off. He paused in his screwing of a tiny screw into a hole on the back of a modem, glancing around the large thing in the general direction of the noise. "Who the hell could that be?" He muttered, shaking his head as his eyes started to shift back to the modem in front of him that his mother had asked him to fix. Sure, why not? Ask Monty for everything, because he was the nerd of the family. Despite himself, a smirk appeared on his face, because the words were simply true. He and his brother Derrick had been polar opposites. Derrick was the outgoing jock, and Monty was the introverted nerd that hid in his room more often than not.

The smirk slipped from his face as he thought about his brother. Though it'd been about five or so years since Derrick's disappearance, it still almost felt like yesterday when the police had come to his family's door and told him. Monty could still see the image of his mother falling to her knees, and his father-- the strongest man he knew-- clutching his face as he bawled. Outright bawled, because his oldest son was missing. After weeks of searching, Derrick was presumed dead. They'd had a funeral for him and everything, and Monty still remembered that, too. Swallowing heavily, he shoved all of those thoughts from his head, focusing on the task at hand again. Unfortunately he got so invested that he forgot all about his phone going off.

Some twenty or so minutes later, he remembered the text he'd received and jerked his head up without warning. As he'd been sitting on the ground under a desk, he smacked his head right on it, letting out a low whine of pain. Setting the modem gently aside, he sighed and dug around for his phone until he found it, realizing that it had been Elliot who'd messaged him. "Whoopsies." He grimaced as he read the message, realizing that he'd promised Elliot he wouldn't be a hermit tonight. "Well, toads." He groaned, looking back at the modem longingly. After a moment he stood, knowing Elliot was likely already on the verge of texting again. Or worse-- calling. After sending his friend a quick text back, Monty headed for his front door.

On his way out, he caught sight of the photo of the six of them, and he paused. A small smile graced his features, and he reached for the frame to look at it. Almost as soon as his fingers connected with the object, though, a vision filled his mind. He gasped as his home around him faded, and an image filled his mind of his friends. He could see all of them-- Elliot walking around the festival, Clover and Alek holding hands, Kat looking up at... Harley?! The vision faded but Monty knew better than to doubt his powers. But could it be she was really back? After all this time? Monty hastily set the photo back down and practically fled from his house, running the entire way to the festival, which thankfully wasn't far. He found Elliot on instinct alone, nearly crashing into his friend as he tried to stop. "Elliot!" He gasped, clutching his heart as he struggled to get his breathing back to normal. "Have you seen Kat?"

Though she didn't dwell on it much, it wasn't lost on Katarina the irony of finding comfort in the inhalation of smoke. Her major anxieties stemmed from a fire that had not only taken her home, but her mother as well. She could remember that night like it was yesterday. The library at her school had let her take home a reference book on Nordic mythology, a topic that fascinated her at that age. Normally, the library didn't let students take home those types of books. But, Kat had shown so much interest and practically begged the librarian to let her take it home, that the older woman couldn't possibly say no. The reference book was full of pages after pages of photocopied artifacts. Ceramics and drawings and sculptures. But the ones that caught her attention were the intricate symbols scrawled into tablets or stones or even old pieces of parchment.

According to history, Odin, ruler of the Gods. brought the runes to humans, who promptly used them for divination and casting. In constant pursuit of knowledge and the mysteries of life, he even lost his eye in exchange for wisdom. The runes were seen by those without magic as a tool for guidance, taking pieces from the subconscious and converting those into unanswered questions one may have. They were carved into amulets and rings, cups, and even the bows of ships. Some were used for protection, health, calm tides, love, crop growth, and weather. Others were curses, even potentially contributing to death. Because of the manipulation associated with them, runes were believed to be a connection between the mortal realm and the supernatural afterlife. But the one thing that Odin left behind the humans couldn't figure out was the blank rune, known as wyrd.

What those with magic realized that mundanes did not was the power behind this blank rune, and the ability to create whatever was needed or wanted at that moment. It represented absolute possibilities, all-powerful magic that could be wielded by the right person. At the young age of ten, Katarina was sure that she was the one to control that power. Or at least create something new. And so she tried to. With each rune she etched, she got no response. It had become more of an art project than anything else. On that particular night, she had just watched an action movie with her family, and the fresh imagery of fires and explosions was still clear in her mind. Kat focused on that as she created a rune for explosive fire. It was harmless, simply an exercise in art rather than intentional. But her uncontrollable magic didn't care whether it was intentional or not. As soon as the symbol was complete, its paper burst into flames, igniting anything it could.

Katarina inhaled from the cigarette again, ignoring the phantom burning sensation in the burn scar on her upper arm. She could have healed it with her runes if she wanted. But she didn't, using it as a constant reminder of what she had done. In the distance, she could hear the screams of happy children and the chatter of families. The grumbling in her stomach spurred the decision to find a food truck or two once she was done with her cigarettes. After all, there wasn't much better than the fried food sold at small-town festivals. Taking one final inhale from her cigarette, Kat dropped the filter to the ground, stamping it out beneath the toe of her black ankle boot. It was then that she heard someone call out her name. The voice was feminine and familiar. But she couldn't quite put a finger on who it belonged to. Raising her blue gaze, the brunette was surprised to find a long-lost friend standing across from her. "Oh my god, Harley?" she answered, and wasted no time sprinting over to pull the other brunette into her arms for a hug. "It's been so long! Are you really back? How have you been?"

Magic wasn't a foreign topic for Aleksander. In fact, as far as he knew, he was the most experienced out of their entire group. If experience was measured in years since discovery anyway. Alek was only six years old when his father walked through that front door. The older Strand had been away on a business trip, and had gotten home late that evening. Always the excited one, the young redhead stayed awake to wait for his father's return. But what he learned in that moment was way more than he could ever have bargained for. Nils stood in the foyer. But instead of removing his mud-soaked boots and jacket, he simply tapped the clothing. Before his very eyes, Alek watched as the clothes transformed into his father's classic sleeping attire. And that was the day that he learned the truth behind the strand name, he learned about magic.

It was all fun and games, learning about the Strand ancestry and the powers they held. But magic always comes with a price, and that price just happened to be his family. He lost his mother and his sister, both terrified of what Alek and his father might be able to do. His mother sent them packing with the bags that they could carry. For a while, the young man swore off the magic he had been so excited to pursue. But that didn't last long. As always, magic found a way of weaseling back into the lives of those it affected. And that was how he ended up in surgery, physical therapy, and monthly meetings with Kat for runic healing. The transmutation that could have sent him to the NFL ended up sending him directly to the bench, forever to stay in Ashborough as the town's leading personal trainer.

It wasn't all that bad, to be completely honest. He met some wonderful people in his new home, friends that went through similar situations, and even some with magic of their own. There was Kat, of course, whose artistic mind allowed her to create runes and magic out of nothing. Monty was the little brother that he always wanted, though it took a while for him to warm up. And Elliot, whom he practically grew up with. They could be rolling around on the ground in a tussle one moment and getting a drink the next. Then there was Clover. She was this gorgeous brunette with striking blue eyes and confidence that put even him to shame. They had been dating since high school, with a few break-ups here and there. Alek wasn't she was the one he would spend the rest of his life with, but he did enjoy most of their time together.

"Alek!" Speak of the devil. The familiar voice caught his attention, and the redheaded man turned to face the sound. Almost immediately, he felt her perfect painted lips press against his, a grin spreading across his features. "Hey, Clo," he began, wincing slightly when the sparks materialized between them. As the so-called magical curse continued, it was clear that issues controlling one's powers weren't sequestered to just Aleksander and Katarina. Glancing at the fried dough in the trash, he shrugged sheepishly. "Sorry, lost my appetite. This whole 'out-of-control-magic' thing is starting to get on my bad side," he answered, also hesitant as she intertwined her fingers with his. One wrong touch and either one of them could be up in smoke. Aleksander let out a low chuckle at her words, letting Clover drag him further into the crowd around the food trucks. As they walked, a familiar set of tattoos and brunette hair caught his attention, causing him to pause as they passed. "Elliot, Monty! Everything alright?"

Clover Lexington
Ever since discovering the secret inside an old dusty book called grimoire, Clover’s life changed. At first, she was not exactly interested in the magical heritage and not because she was afraid or something else. Clover simply had different things on her mind, ones she considered much more important than some ancient hocus pocus of her ancestors. And quite frankly, her mind was a bit more shallow to enable her to believe in fairy tales like magic and spells. Her friends and building her reputation sky high were way more important than nerding inside her room and reciting words she could barely read correctly.

I was actually Arthur who got her to try. Before everything went down, the Lexington twins were almost inseparable. Sure, they argued and teased each other as any siblings would but they also protected each other, especially after their mom died. Moving to the States was difficult for the young socialite and Clo had to get used to a lot of new things. New home, new people, new friends, new system. She was having a rather hard time at first, even though she didn’t want to admit it. Arthur stood by her side and went through everything with her. And they were together when the family grimoire appeared. While Clo decided not to pay it any attention, Arthur was enchanted from the very first moment. Every spare moment he had, he studied the book and tried to cast different spells. He was getting deeper and deeper into the realm of magic and one day, the door of Clover’s room jammed open and there he was, a dark-haired excited young Brit standing there, slightly breathless.

It was the day Clover discovered that magic was indeed real. Imagine her surprise when she tried a few minor spells and they almost worked. The brunette got sucked in just as Arthur and the twins practiced magic together, hiding in the attic of their mansion. But while Clover decided to maintain her social life intact, Arthur immersed himself way too much and before he knew it, magic consumed him. Every day he was looking for new and new forms of magic, more powerful ones, stronger, more potent. Until he came across the blood magic. Naturally, he shared the news with his sister but Clover was just put off, especially by the word ‘blood’. It was the very moment Arthur was becoming lost to her.

But all that was a long time ago. Since then, Clo mastered her elemental magic and ruled all four basic elements. Until recently when all the spells started to backfire and she grew powerless in sense of not being in control of her own powers. Just as her lips touched Alek’s and the sparks flew. Clover was flustered and angry, hating the fact that she was not the one in control. Seeing the piece of untouched fried dough in the trash, Clover winced. Such waste. Not that she was about to buy a new one. Instead, she took Alek by his hand and decided that despite their misfortune and collapsing powers, the power couple needed to enjoy the fair and make the most of it. Alek’s chuckle reached her ears and Clo smirked. “What? Is true.” she commented smugly, giving his hand a soft squeeze. The two were back in their honeymoon phase now and it was rather cute seeing them walk side by side, as if cut out from a magazine.

Looking around, Clover was looking for something that looked fun. Snacks, rides, photo booths, games. It all was there. Maybe she could get Alek to win her something adorable. But before they could get anywhere fun, two other people came in their path. Stuttering nerd Monty was there, her friend slash lackey. Though he was more lackey than friend as Clo only called him if she needed something. The other one made her scrunch her button nose. The brunette really didn’t have high regards for Elliot Prescott. In her eyes, this was how scum of the earth looked like and how Alek could be best friends with him was beyond her. “Monty, hello there.” she smiled brightly at the nerd and then moved her gaze to Elliot, raising her eyebrows. “I’m kind bored already. Let’s do something fun, babe.” Clover tugged on Alek’s hand, hoping that she could take him away from those two. Though once Elliot opened his big fat mouth, Clo knew all her effort was in vain.

Elliot Prescott
“Thank you, sweetcheeks.” Elliot winked at that pretty young girl handing him a corndog he had ordered a while ago. Seeing the gorgeous blue baby doll eyes staring at him, he wanted to thrown the snack away and just ask her for a walk. There was a haunted maze built nearby and Elliot could bet he would show her parts of it she had never seen before. And some other things unseen but those would have only very little to do with the maze. His hand with a corndog was already dropping and his lips parted as he was about to utter his invitation when he remembered the text to Monty. As much as Elliot was unable to keep it in his pants and was ready to ravage the girl in front of him, his heart would not allow him to leave Monty roam this place alone. Poor guy might go crazy and then, Elliot had a plan. After all, the day when Monty scored a girl had to come one day and maybe it was this one.

And so, Elliot just grinned and threw another cheesy compliment her way that had her giggling and was about to turn around when something almost took him off his feet. “Damnit, dude!” he growled, ready to fix the face of a motherfucker who was this bold only to realize it was his nerdy glasses-wearing little friend. “Montgomery, what in the fuck are you doing?” Elliot laughed, biting the tip of his corndog on. “You have a date that you’re in such a hurry?” he added, grinning like an asshat he was. But then Monty asked about Kat and the grin on Elliot’s face only grew. “Oh, Kat?” he drawled, ruffling Monty’s hair. “So that’s who you’re after now?”

It was basically Elliot’s job description as a friend to tease and poke Monty. He could get so flustered it was actually adorable and seeing him in such a hurry only to meet Katarina Lundgren, oh well. Monty was usually not the one to run after the ladies. Whenever that happened, Elliot was going to take it and encourage this sudden surge of instinct or whatever it was. “Well, let’s go then. Let’s find you Kat.” he winked, slinging his arm around Monty’s shoulders, walking away from the corndog stand, throwing the unfinished snack in the trash. He was a man on the mission now. There was no time for snacks!

The two didn’t really get far when a couple got in their way. The familiar tuft of red hair made Elliot grin again as he recognized his best dude and his girlfriend hopping by his side. Seeing Clover there was not the most pleasant occurrence and Elliot suppressed a groan when his gaze fell upon the brunette. Elliot less than liked her for sure and the feeling was mutual. The two barely tolerated each other, mostly for Alek’s sake. Clover was a real bitch and one, she used Monty as she wanted and the fool was dancing as she whistled every time. Two, she was sucking life out of Alek and Elliot had no idea how they were still together. But it was definitely not his place to tell Alek who he should date. But the relationship only provided more reason for Elliot not to get serious with any chick.

Elliot would have left right then but it was Clover’s annoying drawl that made him smirk. As she demanded to do something fun, loud shrieks sounded in the background, coming from a roller coaster nearby. “Weeeell…how about we go get Kat for Monty here and then we can ride this baby a few times, huh?” he asked, pointing at the metal behemoth of a construction behind him. His eyebrows wiggled a little and he was silently praying that Clover would back out. She looked like she was about to slap him but remained silent, just glared at him with daggers in her eyes. “Or are you afraid of a little coaster?”

Even though it had been years since Harley had been here in Ashborough, and the same amount of time since she'd seen her friends faces, she knew the girl she was looking at had to be Katarina. Still, there was a slight hesitation in her voice when she called out Kat's name, but when the girl lifted her gaze and looked over at Harley, she knew she'd been right. Her former friend hopped to her feet, closing the distance between them before she pulled Harley into a hug, one that Harley happily returned. There was definitely nothing former about their friendship, even though so much time had passed. There was still a warmth there in Kat's arms that Harley realized in that moment just how much she'd missed. Though keeping in touch had proved to be difficult, maybe Harley could have tried a little harder.

"It is me, and I am back." Harley exclaimed, realizing that her eyes had become a little watery. Pulling away from the hug, she wiped at her eyes as she let out a gentle laugh. "Trust me, I can't believe it either. I've been... well, let's just focus on you. How have you been?" Harley knew that Ashborough was a pretty close-knit town, so it wouldn't surprise her if Kat already knew about her mother's death, but it wasn't something that Harley wanted to talk about or even focus on right now. She was more than ecstatic to see her friend again, and couldn't help but wonder about everyone else. "How..." Harley started to ask before she bit down on her lip, almost unsure if she should even ask about them. She may have only been twelve when she was forced to leave with her dad, but she hadn't kept in touch with any of them.

With a small sigh, Harley glanced around at the festival, or at least the parts that they could see. "Are you here by yourself?" She turned her attention back to Kat, deciding not to ask about them for now. She'd most likely find them eventually, and then she could see how they'd been. For all she knew, they were angry with her, and if they were she couldn't blame them. She'd had plenty of opportunities to call, to text, hell even email or a fucking letter. But she hadn't. Not that things had been easy after she left with her father, but still. She felt guilty about everything, even leaving. "I literally just got back. Like, haven't even gone in the house yet just got back." Laughing again, Harley reached up to tuck her hair behind her ears, turning to face the festival with Kat. "Anything changed around this place?"

Sometimes Monty forgot that not everyone had the exact same magic as him. They did share the fact that they could do magic, of course, but it seemed they each had a specialty as well, and Monty's was a little... wonky at times. He could have very well just seen Harley in Ashborough because she had been here when she was younger, but the version of the girl he'd seen in his vision was not that twelve year old girl he knew. No, she had grown up, same as the rest of them. He knew he had to tell Elliot, so he located the other male using some of his magic. Unable to stop himself from running into his friend, though, he winced when he heard Elliot's angry voice let out a curse. Only when he noticed it was Monty did his expression soften, but Monty was so focused on his vision still he couldn't even get out a proper sentence other than asking if he knew where Kat was.

Elliot's whole demeanor changed suddenly, and it took Monty a moment to get what he was talking about. "What? No!" He exclaimed, reaching up to fix his hair as he narrowed his eyes at Elliot. "That wasn't what I meant at all, Elliot! Jeez, it's not like I like her like that. I mean I like her! But, god, Elliot..." He trailed off, growing more and more flustered as he tried to explain what he'd been asking. Elliot slung his arms around Monty's shoulders, telling him they'd go and find Kat. Only they didn't find Kat, they found Clover and Alek. Clover greeting him only caused the redness on his cheeks to appear again, and he quickly slipped out of Elliot's grip to offer the girl a small wave. Clover said she wanted to go do something fun, and Elliot was quick to throw in the fact that Monty wanted Kat before he mentioned the roller coaster.

Groaning, Monty reached up to run his fingers through his hair, heaving a sigh before he placed his hands on his hips. "We need to find Kat, but not because I'm looking for her." Monty shot a look at Elliot, realizing that his words probably made no sense. An exasperated sound left his lips as he spun on his heel, closing his eyes for a moment and trying to sense Kat. "This would be easier if I had something of hers." He muttered, sighing again before he suddenly opened his eyes. "She's this way. Come on." Without looking behind him to see if the others were following, he started off towards the edge of the festival, hoping his instincts were right and leading them in the right direction. Eventually, though, Kat did come into view, talking to another girl. Monty stopped dead in his tracks, squinting. "Who is that?"

Katarina was born and raised in Ashborough, spent all of her life there. She knew all the shortcuts, the best places to eat, and the best-kept secrets. She could navigate the streets without the GPS on her phone, could practically get from any one point in town to another blindfolded if she had to. But that was the only place she could do that. Take her out of town, and Kat wouldn't even be able to tell east from west. It was a relatively small town, and so she knew most of the people that inhabited it. Or at least she tried to. And a lot of them knew here. Though, that wasn't necessarily because of her sweet personality. Some of them just happened to read about the poor orphaned girl in the newspaper who had gone a little crazy, so to speak, after she lost her mom in a devastating fire. Her grandmother raised her until a few weeks after Kat's eighteenth birthday when she sadly passed away peacefully in her sleep. After that, it was just her, living in the modest two-bedroom home her grandmother had left her, with her easel and her cat, Milo.

Harley Jade was one of the first people Katarina met in Ashborough. For children, going into kindergarten was their first chance to truly make friends. To be honest, Kat doesn't entirely remember how they started talking or why. But the two were pretty much inseparable from then on. Katarina considered Harley's family her second family, though she saw them less and less over the years. She would realize only later that was because of the fighting going on behind closed doors between her parents, and their eventual divorce. Harley was the one person Kat could trust to give her honest feedback on her art and music. They used to spend hours in each other's bedrooms, making up riffs and silly lyrics about things important to preteens. Harley was even Kat's shoulder to cry on when she lost her mom, though she had learned to keep the idea of her drawings causing the fire to herself at that point. And then, just like that, Harley was gone. Katarina remembered that they tried to keep in contact at first, but things fell through the cracks and Harley stopped returning her calls.

At first, she was sad, though never angry. She knew he best friend was on to bigger and better things with her life, and she was happy for her. And to be completely honest, her own life was getting more and more hectic by the day, as she began to discover her powers and abilities in rune magic. That all being said, she still missed her best friend. So now that the brunette girl was standing in front of her, not an illusion or mirage, Kat couldn't be more ecstatic. Letting her out of the hug, she took a step back to appraise Harley, smiling. It wasn't lost on Kat that her friend avoided her question, but she thought it better to just let it slide. "I've been more or less the same I suppose," she answered with a sheepish shrug, "After all, I'm still living here in Ashborough, aren't I?" In truth, the brunette artist had wanted to leave, much like her musically-inclined friend. She wanted to go off to college, to study art history and design, maybe live in a city and someday get her own work in a gallery. But those dreams fizzled out when the Circle came about.

There was no way Kat could leave her friends behind, especially when they relied on one another for specialty magics and keeping themselves in check. Especially now that their powers were harder to control than ever before. So she took some online classes, got a degree in art history that way, and took up private art curation for Ashborough and the surrounding towns. It wasn't the life she had dreamed of, but it would certainly do. Kat's turquoise blue eyes met Harley's hazels as she trailed off, never quite finishing her question. For a moment, her brow furrowed in confusion, but Harley continued. "Yeah, by myself for now. I'm sure the old group is hiding out around here somewhere. But, other than getting older, not a lot has changed." So, maybe that wasn't the entire truth. They all had magic powers that they were hiding from the rest of the town. But, as much as Kat would have loved to tell Harley, she couldn't. Rules of the Circle. Almost as if on cue, a familiar head of brown hair came into view, followed by an entourage of familiar faces. Kat waved at them with a smile. "Guys! Over here! Look who I ran into!"

Aleksander remembered the first time he had met Clover all those years ago. It was one of his first football games as the quarterback and team captain and, to add to the pressure, they were facing off against their rival high school. Alek wanted to do everything in his power to prove himself to his coach, his team, his friends, and his father as well. But that was still the time in his life where he had sworn off magic. The game progressed, the score neck-and-neck until the final few seconds of the last quarter. He had the ball, and they were down by a field goal. Alek knew he had one play to get that ball into the end zone, and so he went for the risk. After all, big risks meant big rewards. Isn't that how the saying goes? Coach was angry, but his team trust him. And in the final seconds, he snapped the ball directly into his receiver's waiting hands, squarely in the end zone. The buzzer sounded, and he was a hero.

Alek didn't know it at the time, but his popularity from that night on would practically skyrocket. More importantly, he would meet Clover after the game. They began dating, and it had become this on-again, off-again thing ever since. It was like a cycle, one that neither of them could really break out of. They would start dating, and everything would be amazing, like the honeymoon phase. They wouldn't fight, enjoyed each other's company, and ultimately just got along well. But over time, the little, minutely annoying things would begin to pile up until one would lash out at the other. And then it was nothing but constant arguments, passive-aggressive actions, and snide comments until they ultimately broke up again. After what could be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks and sometimes even a few months, they would find their ways back to one another, and the cycle would start over again.

At that moment, they had yet to break out of that honeymoon phase. But with as much distaste as she held for Elliot and Alek's friendship with him, who knows when that would end. At the mention of Kat, Alek turned his attention to Monty, a smirk playing on the edges of his lips. "Kat, huh? Damn, Monty, I didn't realize you had it in you," he said with a grin before glancing at Clover. "Come on, babe. Monty apparently needs a wingman for a bit, and you and I both know Elliot isn't going to help," he said, shooting a teasing wink at his friend. "Besides, I'm pretty sure I saw her at the town hall meeting earlier. So she's got to be around here somewhere. It won't take that long to find her. And, as soon as we do, I'll take you to those game booths and win you a teddy bear. Sound good?"

Monty seemed less than enthused with their teasing, and to be honest, Alek had no idea what he was talking about. Needing to find her but not because he was looking for her? Then who the hell was he looking for? And what the hell did they have to do with Kat? "Monty, we've talked about the whole speaking in riddles thing. You gotta-" Alek began, but his brunette friend had already taken off towards the edge of the festival without waiting for them. Letting out a chuckle, the redheaded man glanced between Elliot and Clover. "Sometimes I wonder about that kid. But we might as well follow him." With his girlfriend's fingers still intertwined with his, Alek began the trek across the festival, wondering what kind of scavenger hunt Monty was leading them on. It wasn't until he saw Kat alongside a familiar brunette and heard Monty's question that his heart dropped. "Harley."

Clover Lexington
Being British meant more than the stereotypical jokes about dry humor and bad weather. Having British aristocratic blood meant being higher on the social hierarchy, at least a few branches up than the rest of the society. Once you’re born in the family of the duke, your path is somewhat predetermined and certain things are expected of you. Ladies are taught how to sit, stand, drink, eat, look, smile and laugh properly, how to be pretty and prim, polite and easy on the eyes. They need to possess a certain skillset, be gracious dancers, elegant horse riders, fluent in foreign languages and so many more things that it was tiring even to name them. Clover was definitely not fond of at least half of them and yet, back in England, she was forced to visit all those classes until the moment she decided to break free, to tear off the chain that was tying up her true nature. Once the cycle of boring lessons and mandatory trainings was broken, Clover showed her true colors of the entitled future duchess.

Not even coming to the States changed her ways and the brunette was still dwelling on the idea how important she was. She held high regards for herself and everyone needed to prove themselves to her so she would even consider being friends with them. Clover Lexington was definitely used to getting the finest stuff and it applied to material things as well as to people surrounding her. While her twin brother Arthur became the casual teenager, Clover was breathing entitlement and it was safe to say that there were many people who were only friends with her because of her money and connections. If there was someone who could get the best tickets for the Imagine Dragons concert, it was Clover. You needed a new car? You asked Clover who would then bat her long fake eyelashes at her daddy and the old Lexington would make that call which got you instant discount. She could handle everything, all you had to do was ask. If you were her friend, of course. Imagine Blair Waldorf but ten times more entitled.

When it came to relationships, Clover didn’t date much. In her book, boys in Ashborough were not at her level and she needed someone by her side who would reflect her status. And there was no one who would even come close. Until she met Aleksander Strand. She remembered that moment she noticed him for the first time. Like noticed him for real. He was the hero of that match she was watching. And no, Clover was not exactly a sports fan, she only came because there was supposed to be some party right afterwards. But it felt as it was meant to be since that one night started her years-long relationship with Alek. Admittedly, it was not exactly the healthiest one but the two were the shining couple back at high school. The dream couple. People wanted to either date them or be them. Exactly the feeling which Clover craved.

Meeting Monty and Elliot was not exactly what Clover had in mind when she wanted to walk around the fair but there they were. And she alone could do nothing about that cursed friendship so she knew she simply had to learn to accept that her boyfriend was besties with the biggest douche in Ashborough. At least Monty was bearable. Though now he seemed rather frazzled and even more so when both guys pinched him about his interest in Kat. Clover’s lips arched in a mischievous smile and she had a comment of her own ready but Monty was already gone, walking towards the edge of the fair. Alek was right, they had to follow him because if Elliot decided to help Monty score, that was simply recipe for catastrophe. “Well, it will have to be a pretty big teddy bear then.” she smirked over Alek’s offer.

The group moved after Monty and indeed, after a moment of walking, they discovered the girl Monty craved to see so much. “He’s so clueless.” Clover giggled over Monty’s antics of the day but her smile froze the second she realized Kat was not alone. It was not the fact that Katarina was there with a friend. It was the fact that the friend was… “Harley indeed…” Clo breathed and her fingers gripped Alek’s hand even more, feeling the heat in her veins grow. “Look what the cat dragged in…” she mumbled, flashing Kat an apologetic look for the inuendo. “Prodigal daughter returns?” she asked, her posh accent protruding quite a lot.

Elliot Prescott
Elliot loved fairs. It was the perfect combination of amazing junk food, rides that made you scream your lungs out and a lot of opportunities to meet cute girls who were willing to give you a good time if you winked at them just right. And Elliot knew exactly how to do that. More than well. One might think he was compensating for his fucked up childhood. And one would be totally right. The group home was not exactly the greatest place to grow up and Elliot had it even worse, being the only kid literally hunted. He got the taste of bullying pretty soon and it went on for years. Until one special day when his powers hit him and he was able to force his bullies to turn around and run where they came from. It was that day that marked the beginning of Elliot’s rebirth into the version of him which was now standing close to the corndog stand.

Once Elliot discovered his real self, it stopped being so hard to find friends. Until then, he only had one good friend and it was Alek. The two knew each other forever. They met as kids, just two small boy getting in trouble together, causing problems, having all the fun in the world. It was the redheaded boy who was the first ever to witness what Elliot could do and when they found a roadkill puppy, Elliot brought it back to life. The small golden retriever was suddenly running around as if nothing happened and Elliot was overwhelmed with joy that it was him who returned life force into the small animal. And he got to share his secret with his best pal.

Throughout the year, he made more friends, of course, but those came and went. Alek stayed. Their friendship was special and Elliot felt it in the utter depth of his dark heart. And then there was Monty. Monty Jackson was like that little brother Elliot never had. The two were the same age but the tattoo artist still put himself in the role of Monty’s mentor. At least when it came to ladies. Poor Monty was clueless and Elliot took it upon him to find the lad a girlfriend. And teach him how to talk to the opposite sex so Monty would finally be able to do it without stuttering and awkwardness.

Today, he was all about having to find Kat and Elliot didn’t miss the eagerness with which his friend was talking about the artist girl. Tease after tease was rolling off his tongue and once Alek and Clover appeared, his best friend joined him in the marathon of making Monty flustered. "We need to find Kat, but not because I'm looking for her." Monty spoke and his tone seemed rather exasperated. Elliot laughed but then it sound died in his throat when he realized he had no clue what Monty meant. “Wait, wh-?” he started but Alek was faster, telling Monty he was speaking in riddles again. Before they knew it, Monty darted off, saying Kat was that way. “What’s up with him today?” Elliot asked curiously and shot a look at Alek.

However, the trio still followed Monty and Elliot made sure he was walking two steps in front. Hearing those two love birds cooing about games and teddy bears was making him roll his eyes too hard. He was ready to jab Clover again when they stopped and saw impossible. Monty found Kat alright but that was not the unbelievable part. It was the person standing next to Kat. Her name sounded a few times along with Clover’s snarky comment. “Dude, put a muzzle on that…” Elliot mumbled, nudging Alek in the ribs. “Her leash seems too long.” But then, without further ado, he approached the long lost blonde and pulled her in a hug. “Where the fuck did you disappear, Harley Jade?” he asked, ruffling her hair a little, just like he used to when they were kids.

Seeing Kat again brought back all the memories of Ashborough that Harley had tried to forget over the years. At first, she didn't want to forget. She wanted to return, but that just wasn't an option. So as time went on and communication became less and less, Harley figured that it would be easier just to forget. But here she was, back in the town she'd sworn to never think about again, running into one of her very best childhood friends. Kat welcomed her warmly, and the hug put a smile on Harley's face as she returned it. A wave of guilt washed over her, for not returning those phone calls, for wanting to put this place behind her. These people had been her friends, this town her home. She'd never meant to fall off the face of the earth. It'd just happened.

Kat replied in a similar way to Harley, shrugging a little bit before she stated that she was still living here. A small laugh escaped Harley before the conversation moved on to the rest of their small group of friends. "I imagined not." Her smile grew a little sadder as she thought about them, wondering if they'd all welcome her like Kat would, or if there'd be some bad blood there. The conversation died for a moment, but before it could get awkward, suddenly Kat started waving. Harley lifted her head, turning as Kat greeted the others, her heart skipping a beat when she saw them too. "You were right." She told Kat as the others approached, sharing a look with her artist friend before they reached them. "Not a lot has changed, has it?"

Elliot was the first to move towards her and give her a hug, and she returned it eagerly, swatting his hand away when he ruffled her hair. "God, El, come on." But she was laughing as she turned to the others, her eyes landing on Monty who was staring at her with those big eyes of him. "C'mere, Monty, jesus. I don't bite." She pulled him closer, lowering her voice for her next comment but not so low the others wouldn't hear. "Unless you ask, of course." Unaware of the shit Monty had been receiving about him wanting to find Kat before now, she squeezed his arm as she pulled away, turning to the other two. She'd heard Clover's comment about seeing what the cat had dragged in, and she fixed the British brunette with a leveled look before she spoke.

"Meow, I guess." She could see the ice in Clover's eyes, but she still moved towards her, giving her a small hug before she turned to Alek. "Jesus, Alek. You really grew into that body, didn't you?" She reached over to touch his arm, squeezing some of the muscle there and shaking her head. "And to think, you used to worry you wouldn't. I can see you didn't have a problem in that department." Also unaware of the slightly tumultuous relationship between him and Clover, Harley took a step back, looking at everyone again before she clapped her hands together. "Don't everybody speak at once, jesus. What have I missed? What have you guys been up to since... well, forever?"

Monty couldn't help but feel more than a little exasperated at his friends and how they were acting. Did they not know him at all? Why would he go from nerdy little Montgomery to looking to jump Kat's bones? God, just the thought... not that Kat was ugly or anything! She wasn't! In fact, she was gorgeous. But he had an inkling about something, and they just had to find her so he could figure out if he was right. He could take the time to explain what his idea was, but that would take too much time. They just needed to get off his back and listen to him for once. Really, why was he even here? Why had he gone to find Elliot first? He could have just gone and found Kat on his own, and then found the others, but no. For some stupid reason, he'd found Elliot first.

Groaning, he took off from the others, ignoring their jabs as he did so. The others followed him, and when they finally found Kat, Monty was the first one to stop. He even asked who she was standing with, even though a part of him already knew. But Alek was the first one to utter her name, and even clueless Monty heard the shock in his voice. He turned to look over at Alek, just as Kat started waving and gesturing for them to come closer. As they moved towards the two females, Monty heard Clover's comment and sighed, just turning his head the other way to give her a quiet, pleading look. Elliot was the first to hug Harley, and then she looked over at the nerd, grinning as she pulled him closer. "C'mere, Monty, jesus. I don't bite. Unless you ask, of course."

His face turned beet red against her leather jacket as she pulled away, and he coughed to try and hide it. God, with everything else the others had been giving him shit for, that comment was just going to take the cake. Thankfully, Harley turned to the other two, and Monty noticed how cold the hug was between her and Clover. Then she moved onto Alek, commenting on his muscles and Monty looked down at his own, thin arms with a frown on his face. He lifted his finger to poke at the lack of muscle there, jumping slightly and jerking his head up when Harley clapped her hands. Monty laughed nervously, looking around at the others before he looked back at their long lost friend. "I think everyone is a little... starstruck." He offered, shrugging.

Kicking a rock, he tucked his hands into the pockets of his jeans, pursing his lips some. "We've missed you." He spoke again, his voice softer as he looked over at Harley. Her expression softened as well, and she laughed a little before she looked at the ground. Another small frown appeared on Monty's face, and he moved closer to her, placing a hand on her shoulder. As he did so, an image filled his mind. A woman who looked just like Harley, just older. A bottle of liquor, and then the same woman face up in a coffin. Snapping out of his vision, Monty looked over at Harley again. "Your mom died?" He asked her softly, and she just nodded. Without warning, he threw his arms around her, holding her tight. Now things were making sense as to why she was back.

After Harley had left, Katarina felt alone for a while. She was the quiet type, generally anxious and self-conscious, and not all that great at making friends. She spent a lot of her time alone, sketching in her journal or reading books in the library. It wasn't until she stumbled upon Clover's brother, Arthur Lexington, that things began to change. He was interesting, knew about magic, and didn't treat her like she was crazy for believing that it existed. He wanted to learn along with her, would help her find the information she was looking for, test out new runes with her. Arthur was just as fascinated as she was, just as committed to getting to the bottom of whatever this real-life magic was, how it came to be, and how it work. In some ways, more than Kat truly realized. As their friendship went on, Arthur began to change. He became more interested in what the literature called "blood magic," deemed as dark spells and curses that would eventually taint the user's soul to the path of evil. At first, Katarina thought it was all a hoax to scare them off, and eagerly helped him explore blood magic. But closer to his disappearance and even after, she wasn't so sure anymore.

Then there was her friendship with Clover during sophomore year when they began to bond over Arthur's disappearance. Kat knows she can be entitled and arrogant at times but can see the good person underneath all of that. Clo introduced her to Alek, who needed help with tutoring in a couple of classes, and Kat was more than happy to offer up her services. He's hotheaded and vain, sure. But, ultimately, Alek is a leader and would go up to bat for any of his friends if they needed him. Then there was Monty, her friend in existential crisis arms. Anxiety is built into both of their personalities, but when they're around one another, they can truly open up. Monty was the guy she felt like she could talk about anything to and not worry about being judged because, ultimately, he would probably understand exactly what she was going through. And finally, Elliot. There was certainly a lot to be said about Elliot. Katarina had always felt drawn to him, a fellow artist. He had given her most of her tattoos, and truthfully, they were always pretty close friends. She knew there were some sort of feelings there for him, she just couldn't quite put into words exactly what those feelings were. And given his Elliot-ness, for lack of a better word, that was probably for the best.

Her group of friends approached them, some seemingly more excited than others. Elliot immediately went in for a hug, and Kat took a step back to move out of the way, already having her own greetings with her friend. She smiled softly a Clo, letting her friend know that the innuendo was fine, she didn't mind. However, she could most certainly sense the tension between the two women, as well as Alek and Harley. He was practically as stiff as a board. The brunette couldn't help but stifled a laugh at Harley's "Meow, I guess," the reunion of their small group warming her heart. It really was good to see them all back together again, like they were finally complete. But Monty's words cut like a knife, and Kat's blue gaze immediately shot over to her friend with concern in her eyes. "Harley, I'm so sorry for your loss. Are you alright?" Kat asked, reaching out to place a hand on her friend's shoulder. She was careful not to touch Monty, knowing that even the slightest touch could send a vision in his direction, and she didn't think he needed that right now. "Is there anything we can do?"

Aleksander remembered meeting Harley when they were just kids. Almost immediately, it was like their personalities just clicked and they became best friends on the spot. She was the peanut butter to his jelly, the yin to his yang, the salt to his pepper. She was the first friend he made after moving to Ashborough, shortly before Elliot, and they were practically inseparable after that. Alek really cared about Harley, and so he would usually look out for her, make sure she was okay and protect her from any bullies that might be loitering about. Somewhere down the road, though, he began to develop a crush on her. It was the cliche guy-falls-in-love-with-his-childhood-best-friend trope popular in young adult novels. But, despite his feelings, Alek could never bring himself to act on them. Harley had a crush on Elliot, one that she told him about. For fear of ruining the friendship by revealing his feelings for her, and the fact that they were still just kids and he might not have any idea what he was talking about, Alek kept it to himself. And then she was gone. Not a phone call or text. He felt absolutely betrayed, left behind and forgotten like a piece of trash. So much for their lifelong friendship.

And now, there she was. Sure, older, with longer hair and more defined features. But it was the same Harley he had known all those years ago. She was back as though nothing had ever happened, and all of those feelings of betrayal and abandonment were dragged right back to the surface. Aleksander knew that he should push them down. After all, he had a beautiful girlfriend of several years, though off-and-on, and other great friends that did care about him. But he could quite get the feelings to go away. Alek heard Clover's words and felt Elliot jab him in the side, but he was not in the mood for one of their petty arguments right now. "Dude, not now," he answered, his tone cold as their group approached where Katarina and Harley stood. To be honest, Alek wasn't quite sure what to think. He honestly had expected to never see Harley again. So her being there was a bit of a shock, one that he wasn't prepared for. Elliot went in for the hug, followed by Monty. Then Harley stepped in front of Clover, surprisingly hugging her as well. And then him.

Harley had certainly grown up, no longer the clumsy kid falling out of trees or scraping her knees. She reached out to touch his arm, pulling him from his thoughts as she squeezed his arm. Alek shrugged a bit awkwardly, glancing over at Clover before turning his attention back to Harley. "Yeah, I guess so. Perks of several years of football and personal training I guess," he answered, slightly awkwardly. Alek squeezed Clover's hand in his in what he hoped was a comforting way, urging her not to say something that might cause an argument. But Harley's clap and words caught him off guard, and Alek immediately responded, "You mean since you left?" His tone was like ice, and he felt anger begin to flow through his body, the feelings of betrayal and hurt fully coming back to the surface. As soon as Monty mentioned her mother's death, however, Alek couldn't help but feel guilty. The old urge to comfort his best friend tried to fight its way forward, but Alek kept it at bay. That part of his life was over. Just like their friendship.

Clover Lexington
There were times Clover needed a friend. A real friend to talk to, to share her worries and pain with, someone to pour her soul out to. Honestly, there were not many people who would be friends with her because of the girl herself. Most of her posse saw a rich heiress with a title and they wanted to be close to her because what if some of that Lexington fortune blessed them as well? All they saw were expensive cars, a gorgeous estate, designer wardrobe and every wish come true. And Clover simply kept that image up because it was easier than making those people understand her. People who were not in her inner circle usually called her selfish, entitled, spoiled rotten, a daddy’s girl, a bitch. Clover was a lot of those things. Hell, she was all of them. But deep inside, there was a sensitive heart of a girl waiting for her fairy tale. One simply needed to dig deeper.

Harley Jade used to be a friend. The friend actually. One of those gems you need to look for almost all your life. And Clover was lucky to find her this early. The two were almost inseparable at one point and many people made fun of then, saying they were joined at the hip. And then Harley left. No explanation, no goodbye, nothing. And Clover remained in the darkness, surrounded by fake friends who tried to treat her sadness with endless shopping sprees and brunches. All paid by her father’s credit card. It took Clover less than three seconds to figure out they were not doing it for her. Her heart took yet another hit and when the heiress emerged from her grief, she wrapped the organ in another layer of ice, returning to her usual self.

Now she was standing there, looking at her former friend and she could not believe her own eyes. The ocean blue gaze was staring at the blonde who was a bit taller, more mature, her features were sharper but it was her. Harley Jade was back. And while Clover’s heart fluttered a tiny little bit over that reunion, she was not about to throw herself around Harley’s neck. Well, she left. Apparently, their friendship meant more to Clover than to Harley. And so the brunette’s welcoming note was everything people would expect from her. A short, snark-filled sentence packing a kick and dripping with sarcasm. The only apologetic look was shot to Kat but the artist’s eyes let Clo know that Kat did not take her little innuendo personally.

And yet, Harley still approached the young Brit and pulled her in a hug. Small, very short but hug nonetheless. A little fake smile appeared on her face as she leaned into it but that was it. No more pleasantries exchanged between the former friends. And Harley moved onto Alek anyway. Clover knew the two were friends. Well, at least used to be. But the pang of jealousy inside almost knocked her breath out when Harley became all too familiar with the redheaded boy, talking about his body that way. Another comment crawled out of her throat, landing on the tip of her tongue when Alek’s hand squeezed hers a little. A small reassuring squeeze to let her know things were alright and that there was nothing to worry about. And that whatever it was she wanted to say, she could always keep it for another time. At least this was Clover’s interpretation.

Once Harley was done making her rounds, she asked what she had missed but everything changed the second Monty touched her. His question seemed a bit out of place and Clo’s eyebrows jumped up. “Very subtle, Montgomery.” she shook her head. As someone whose mother died, Clover was a little bit more sensitive on that topic and could relate more than well how it felt. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry to hear that. My condolences.” she turned her attention back to Harley. Not even the resident bitch found it in herself to be her usual self in this situation.

Elliot Prescott
Growing up in a group home taught Elliot a thing or two. Those were some real lessons bestowed upon him inside that wretched house but one of them was above all. One should not dwell on things because nothing lasts forever. Whenever Elliot managed to have something he loved, be it a toy, a drawing, a book, anything, there was always a fucker who would steal it away from him and either keep it for himself or destroy it, especially in front of little Elliot himself. There were times Elliot used to cry his eyes out over lost possessions but the older he got, the more he understood that keeping things and putting your soul into something was not worth the heartbreak. And so he stopped keeping anything. If there were projects he worked his ass off on, he simply left it to a teacher or threw it away. He stopped saving money for little items his heart yearned for. And now, when he was an adult, he was unable to create a real connection to anything. And anyone. It really took a special person for him to like for years. Just like Alek.

Elliot was friends with Alek since forever and in Elliot’s eyes, the friendship only persevered because there was no one who could take Alek away from him. This guy was a real pal and always stood by Elliot’s side, come hell or high water. When it came to relationships, though, Elliot was definitely not the type to date. His idea of spending time with a girl was limited to one night and that was it. Once again, if any girl ever captured his heart, it would have to be a really special lady with the highest level of patience. Most of the time, Elliot just floated through life, savoring his moments of freedom, roaming around the town and never really settling down. To him, relationships barely made sense and that was why he also barely understood how Alek could be with a girl like Clover Lexington.

Their little war had been going on for years now and there was no winner. But hearing her comment on Harley being back, Elliot couldn’t just let it pass. He was definitely not an upstanding citizen but that was straight rude and he reacted. However, it seemed that Alek was not in a mood for little jokes as she shut him up and Elliot decided to let it go. For now. Instead, he headed straight towards Harley and locked her in a bear hug before he ruffled her hair. They both had a good laugh about his antics before she moved on and went to hug Monty. Elliot almost choked on his air, hearing Harley’s comment about not biting unless asked. “Lol, Harley! But Monty has a different target today, don’t you, little dude?” Elliot laughed and wiggled his eyebrows in Monty’s direction. “Go get ‘er, I say.”

Waiting for the blonde to give everyone her greeting, Elliot pulled out a pack of cigarettes and put one between his lips. Lighter glimmered in his hand within a second and he lit it up, inhaling a long drag. Harley wanted to know the gossip and El was more than happy to share but Alek commented on her leaving and the ice in his words make the tattoo artist look at his best friend with a little confused frown. It did not take long for the bomb to be dropped and Elliot’s jaw was dropped right after that. “Dude, Harley! I’m so sorry.” he mumbled and immediately thought of his gift. Could he…? Would it be possible to…?

No.

He could not. Maybe under different circumstances. But at this point, with his powers acting out, Elliot would sooner raise the Lucifer himself from the depths of hell than help Harley bring her mom back. Fuck that though. What good was to have this power if he was unable to help? “Maybe we could all use a drink? How about Phill’s?” he asked, referring to a small pub, far from lavish, but hell, they definitely had the best beer on tap. “My treat. You guys in?”

Although Harley hadn’t been expecting the warmest welcome from every one of her old friends, the ice with which some of them greeted her stung like frostbite. Maybe reuniting with Kat first had lulled her into a false sense of security. Monty seemed happy to see her, and Elliot, too. But she could feel it in Clover’s one armed hug and Alek’s awkward tone that they were less than thrilled to see her. The silence that hung in the air after the initial greetings was just as awkward, so she clapped her hands together, trying to make the situation a little lighter. Her eyes shot over to Alek at his cold comment in response to her, the shock evident on her features. “Yeah.” She finally answered, crossing her arms some. “Since I left.” There was a certain curtness to her response as well, and her eyes slid down his arm to finally notice how he was holding Clover’s hand.

She had no reason for the jealousy that shot through her as the puzzle pieces finally fell into place. “I see.” She breathed, so softly that the others might not even have heard. Monty spoke then, telling her how everyone was just in shock and that they missed her. “I can really tell.” She met Clover’s gaze, then Alek’s before Monty stepped over to her. She could feel her confidence wavering, but then something unexplainable happened. He placed his hand on her shoulder, and she looked over at him, watching as his eyes glazed over. It only lasted a second, but then he asked about her mom and Harley felt as though a knife landed in her heart. “How did you…?” But then the rational part of her brain kicked in, and she remembered that Ashborough was a small town. Everyone likely knew. Her jaw tightened as she nodded.

Not really wanting to talk about it still, Harley looked over at Clover when the girl offered her condolences. “Thanks.” She whispered, noting how Alek hadn’t said a word. Kat approached, placing a hand on her other shoulder, asking if there was anything they could do. Before she could answer, though, Elliot offered up drinks at Phill’s. “I was going to say a distraction. So that’s perfect.” She reached up to wipe a tear from her eye, turning away as she did so, hoping no one would notice. “Assuming nothing around here has moved or changed, I can still see the place in my mind.” Not that she’d ever been in there before, definitely not as a kid. The walk wasn’t very long, and the group chatted among itself as they walked, but Harley couldn’t stop thinking about Alek and Clover. Were they really angry with her?

Sure, maybe she could have done better at keeping in touch but that was just life. It happened. Besides, the two of them seemed to have moved on alright. The bitterness of that thought struck her hard, and as she led the way into Phill’s, she told herself to cut the crap. She had no reason to be jealous, or even hurt. They had a right to be mad. Monty took the lead once they got inside, seeming proud of himself to lead the way to a rounded booth in the corner. Harley slid in beside him, letting the others take either side of them. A waitress appeared shortly after they sat down to take their order, then disappeared to go grab the drinks. Harley looked around at the others again, a small frown appearing on her features. “I think I can guess that this table isn’t normally this quiet.”

Monty was usually the overthinker of the group, the one who thought things through over and over again before saying or doing anything. He was almost always prepared for things to go wrong, and with his premonitions, was almost always right when it came to his gut feelings about something. But when he touched Harley’s shoulder and saw the image of her mother in a coffin, the words slipped out of his mouth before he could stop them. He saw her expression darken and grow confused at the same time, but she stopped her own question midway and he breathed out a silent sigh of relief. Dropping his hand, he took a small step back, glad she hadn’t asked him how he knew. It did set his mind wondering, though… The rest of them had magic of some sort. Did Harley not? Was she trying to hide it from them? How could they go about finding out?

Clover offered her condolences while Kat asked what they could do. Elliot brought up Phill’s, and even Monty who didn’t drink thought it sounded like a decent idea. The group started heading that way since it wasn’t a far walk, and despite the fair going on or maybe because of it, Phill’s wasn’t that busy. He proudly led the way to their rounded booth, sliding in with Harley so that the others could sit on the outside. He hadn’t missed Elliot’s comment about Monty having a different target back on the fairgrounds, and he hoped the idiot got it in his head now that he hadn’t been chasing after Kat, but Harley. No, wait, that wasn’t right either, hell!

Feeling his face grow hot at the direction his thoughts had gone, he tried to shove them aside as the others piled into the booth. Luckily Kat hadn’t sat next to him so he could avoid any further teasing, but Clover was there instead, which made his blush only deepen. Mumbling to himself about his busted luck, he slumped back in the seat, only realizing the awkward silence when Harley commented on it. Lifting his head, Monty looked around only to realize that she was right. The table was quiet, and that definitely wasn’t normal. Monty was quiet for another few seconds before he swallowed heavily, trying to think of something to break the silence.

“Clover, you look nice.” Fucking hell, Montgomery! He nearly had a heart attack right there on the spot at his own words. “I mean-- everyone does.” He mumbled, leaning his elbows on the table and avoiding everyone’s gaze, since he assumed they’d be staring at him by now. Blowing out a sharp breath, he hid his face in his hands for a few moments before he finally peeked out. “Um… someone can bring something else up now.” He slid his hands down his face, looking over to Elliot, his eyes silently pleading for help. Maybe Elliot wasn’t the right person to be asking, but he was Monty’s friend and Monty definitely needed one right now.
