  The Greengrass family are a proud family, their blood is pure and their lineage dates back long enough for them to find themselves in the sacred twenty-eight; with many blood and marriage ties to the other families. A family traditionally finding their members in Slytherin; known to be ambitious and cunning folk and believers in the ideals of blood purity. Astoria was raised on whispers of purity and superiority and heard tales of a war they should have won, her parents had not worn the marks on their arms but there were other ways to help win a war and her parents did what they could. She was shown the book containing every member of their house back to when they were founded and taught to feel proud of belonging to such a long line of wizards.
  
  Her family had been in Britain for generations; finding themselves scattered across England, Scotland and Wales in numerous manors and estates. Astoria's branch of the family had a costal estate around Alnwick as their primary residence, isolated from muggles bar the occasional few who stumbled through their lands. Her Mother, Marisa Apolline Lestrange, married her Father after the pair met at the Ministry - her Mother worked as an Unspeakable whilst her Father worked as a business advisor. Both families had greatly approved of the marriage and they'd made a fitting couple, appealing to look at although Astoria always wondered if they truly loved each other.

  Astoria was a quiet child; quick to tears and attached to her sister at the hip. Her first word was Daphne coming out in a garbled Daffy the way toddlers do. She was slow to talk but quick to walk, as though scared if she didn't learn all these things quick enough her family would leave her behind - her parents believed children should be seen and not heard and so she got used to a childhood of being paraded around functions she was too young to understand and parties she was too shy to enjoy and altogether felt like more of a doll than daughter. Her Mother liked her best like that and Astoria was a child craving love and approval; she'd sit as her mother did her hair and try her best not to cry out as the comb tugged and pulled, she'd try her best to copy her sister to earn the same glimmers of approval Astoria saw levelled at her.
  
  Daphne was charming and clever and knew all the right things to say as she was four years older and had far more practise than Astoria, Astoria felt the words die in her throat whenever she tried to talk to the strangers at the parties her Mother would host. Her wide eyes would grow watery and they'd murmur to each other about the shy greengrass daughter, more mouse than snake. Her Father would joke about how they at least knew she was no Gryffindor with how often she was rendered mute and talk about how she was a sweet little thing and act as though her wide eyes meant she was naïve and stupid. Her eyes were always searching, content to watch and observe from the comfort of her sister's shadow; she saw how the servants flinched when her Father smiled, the way noses lifted with disdain when certain families would appear at gatherings, the way poise and elegance could promise violence and the way her Mother's smile was far more terrifying than a scowl.
  
  And so she tried her best to copy them; putting her nose in the air as though the ground beneath smelt foul, standing tall with her shoulders apart as though she was trying to hold up the legacy on her shoulders and smirk as though she knew something others did not. Her Mother would sit her down alongside Daphne and teach them which cutlery to use at dinner, how to smile and charm and simper - she'd host tea parties with dolls so they could practise how to snub, simper, and smile. Astoria would love that time, feeling grown up as she held the hot china in her hands and enjoying the attention levelled at her.
  
  Their Mother would not go so far as to compliment them when they did well but she'd refrain from insult, from a cold and biting remark, from a wand to their fingers when they spilled the tea or a quick hex to the cups causing them to shatter.
  
  Astoria was scared of her Mother despite loving her fiercely, she wanted to make her proud and was terrified at the thought she never would. So she'd accept punishments without complaint and cry silently instead of sob. She was not a child prone to misbehaviour but her timid nature had embarrassed her Mother more than once, or she'd knock over things in their library after a particular book caught her attention or she'd venture into the wrong room within their home and find herself somewhere she was not meant to be and so her Mother would lock her in her room until she could be trusted not to wander again. Astoria felt like she'd disappear on those days, all she had was her family and so when she disappointed them and went without them she was alone in the world. Sometimes Daphne would sneak her food or books or affection but neither sister was willing to risk their parents wrath to do such a thing often.
  
  Her Father was quiet and imposing, Astoria took after him in appearance but where Astoria was gentle he was sharp. He was never cruel like their Mother and would indulge his daughters more childish impulses but he was a busy man, often preoccupied with bettering the family name and their interests whilst their Mother would oscillate between alchemy in their cellar, social functions and instructing her children on the best ways to act in polite society. He'd sit her on his knee and let her tell him about what he'd read and he'd take the drawings and paintings clumsily offered even if she knew he wouldn't keep them.
  
  Astoria loved both of her parents and so she tried her best to be just like them so that they'd love her too.
  
  Her family was a long line of snakes, cold blooded and swallowing their history whole - becoming full of pride and hate it as each generation soaked it up and found themselves unable to be rid of it. Lions, Badgers and Eagles could sweat it out, find themselves somewhere new - snakes would keep against the ground and be kept inside their dungeons and brim until they were all full up. Her parents were full of grandeur and hate, Daphne was full of pride and fidelity whilst Astoria was full of curiosity and a wish to know more about the world.

  When she arrived at Hogwarts, to bright and smiling faces and chocolate frogs and dozens of wide eyed first years just as small and scared as she was Tori felt like she belonged. The train had been her pressed against glass in a compartment of older snakes, leaving her largely unseen and unsure. Hogwarts itself had been warm in a way that home was not, at home she'd been small and weak and afraid - at Hogwarts she'd been bright and felt as though one day she could be brilliant and able to stand outside of her sisters shadow.
  
  The Hat had whispered Slytherin, had saw the resourcefulness and want in the young girl and offered her a house where she'd make her family proud. Then the Hat murmured Ravenclaw and offered her the chance to finally see the world.
  
  The hat had declared her a Ravenclaw and Astoria hurried towards the table, aware of the empty seat next to Daphne at the Slytherin table. The hat gave her wings instead of scales and it was terrifying. Her Mother didn't write to comment on her sorting though Tori still gazed up at the owls with hope each morning, whilst her Father had called her dove and wrote At least it's not Gryffindor or the spares; your Great-Grandmother was a Ravenclaw, she still married well. And Astoria had wondered if that was supposed to be a reassurance.
  
  Still, she put her head down and tried her best to make friends - sometimes she'd grow lonely and sneak off to trail behind her sister for her shadow was a place Astoria was used to being and sometimes the invisibility was a comfort when things were too much - her sister still loved her at least. She was used to faking apathy, pretending to be above it all and acting the part her family expected but that would be at functions where eyes would glance over her before resettling on her sister or mother - she wasn't used to being her own person. She wasn't sure how to be; she'd parrot the things which would have gained approval back home but instead found it would earn her scorn or dismissal and so she'd end up crying alone in her dorm, she'd try to raise her hand in class and find herself frozen at the thought and she'd try to find her own interests but her Mother's voice would echo in her head with disapproval at each one. She'd gaze longingly at the greenhouses but worry how her mother would react to hear she'd gotten dirt beneath her fingernails and liked it or consider playing Quidditch but imagine her Mother's reaction if she defeated her sister's House for a cup.
  
  Astoria was trying but serpents still coiled in Astoria's gut despite the eagle on her robes. Her robes were blue but she had not forgotten the silvers and greens she'd been swaddled in since birth. Their long and proud legacy of poison and blood. It had taken time to unlearn the hatred she'd been taught, the assumptions she'd been groomed to have and how to be a person instead of a doll - it had taken a term of hesitating outside of the doors of the greenhouses before going inside and shyly asking a fourth year Hufflepuff if there was anything she could help with, evenings spent on the edges of the common room before she mustered up enough courage to offer advice to someone playing chess or help someone else with their homework, spending sleepless nights huddled under the covers reading books that would be burned back home about muggles going to the moon, ancient civilisations and glossy gossip magazines as her heart hammered at the thought of being caught with them. She learned about a whole world more vibrant than she'd ever imagined; her parents had dismissed muggles and muggleborns as something uncivilised, uncouth and dirty but Tori read about people who strapped metal to their backs and launched themselves into the stars without a drop of magic there to help them and thought they were braver than any wizard she'd ever seen.
  
  She didn't think she could be brave, she was no Gryffindor and still found herself startled by ghosts and the dark and the weight of eyes on her.

  The Wizarding Tournament changed everything. The papers were full of it; “greer abbott. the tri-wizard champion who met the dark lord and lived? just a student or the chosen one?” Astoria watched her parents digest the claims, watched Daphne dismiss it as folly and wondered whether the fear on her parents faces were of the man himself or the fact he was out in the open again. She'd never asked her parents about their time during the previous wizarding war but Astoria felt secure in the assumption of what side of the line they'd fallen. She heard Daphne talking with her friends, her parents hosting dinners where the topic of conversation would drift towards joining up and doing your duty.
