That One Fear In My Enemy's Eyes
The Races

1) Humans

Good old humans.

The humans are exactly what you'd expect them to be: human.

They are a race of very versatile and adaptable beings who have colonized just about every continent in some way, shape, or form. Due to the nature of humans being competitive and materialistic, they are not exactly friends with most of the other humanoids. In fact the human race as a whole views many of the other races as either mentally or physically inferior and have either tried to conquer or drive out the other races to make more room for themselves across the globe.

As such they are not well liked by many of the other humanoid races.

Humans are most commonly in control of the Elemental forces of Magic. Humans with an affinity for something other than the elements is exceptionally rare. Less than 2% of the human population which is capable of using magic use anything other than the elements.

2) Elves

The Elves come in four different "breeds": High Elf, Forest Elf, Dark Elf, and the "regular" Elf.

- High Elves have the highest magical potential of any humanoid being, bar none. It's not even close. Their bodies have adapted to the highest level of attaining and processing of Mana, the world's magical energy, and can utilize incredibly potent versions of all magical practices.

High Elves are identified by their horizontally angled ears with metallic guards and their light body frames. Because of their natural inclination towards potent magics, they are not physically well equipped for close combat.

Culturally they are well respected and, to a point, feared by their kin. An Elf of any other breed will bow their head or defer to a High Elf's judgement or orders when standing beside them in the field.

- Forest Elves live primarily in the deepest, darkest forests of the world and are incredibly reclusive. While they are not inherently introverted, they are typically less inclined to converse with others or take initiative when in a group. They often prefer taking a supportive role in combat.

They specialize in the healing arts and alchemic practices which yield more potent healing medicines and methods of first aide. The forests where they live are ripe with herbs and harvestable materials which lend themselves well to these pursuits.

Culturally they are considered the "silent little brother" to their kin. They are respected and given their space.

- Dark Elves are the physical combatants of the Elven world. They specialize in close-range combat and produce the finest archers in the world who can hit their mark from over three hundred yards away with pinpoint accuracy.

They are perhaps the most abrasive of the Elven breeds and have no filter on their thoughts or words. They will say what's on their minds without shame or fear of reproach, and even if there is some backlash they let it roll off their shoulders and move on without fanfare.

Culturally they are very well respected as the top warriors of the Elven realm, but at the same time they often draw the ire of their kin for their abrasive and unfiltered method of communication.

- Elves. They are the "humans" of the Elven world in that there is nothing inherently special or instantly recognizable about them. They are less magically inclined than the High Elves, less physically capable than the Dark Elves, and less focused on the healing arts as the Forest Elves. But at the same time they sit somewhere in the middle between those traits and are often the most amiable of the Elven breeds next to the High Elves.

Culturally they integrate well with any of their kin, but they mix the least well with humans due to the numerous wars and political conflicts between them. The humans haven't really had much conflict with the other Elven races for obvious reasons. They were scared of the High and Dark Elves and wanted to trade with the Forest Elves for their healing materials and herbs.

3) Faeries

The Faeries are not the tiny sprites of video games. They are fully human sized (though they can be a bit smaller than other humanoids from a relative sense) and have natural wings similar to those of either butterflies or dragonflies depending on the circumstances of their birth. When they are born in colder climates, they tend to have dragonfly-esque wings. Warmer climates, butterfly wings.

Faeries are powerful users of Nature Magic, meaning they can call upon Nature itself to aid and protect them. They can cause tree roots to grow rapidly and ensnare enemies giving them time to escape. They can cause nearby animals to enter a berserker state and attack enemies. Or they can call upon the mana of the forest to heal the wounds of their allies.

They are quiet and elusive creatures who'd rather avoid conflict whenever possible. They are not exactly respected by other humanoid races, but they aren't viewed as enemies either.

4)
Dwarves

Dwarves are exactly as you'd expect them to be. They are stout humanoids, averaging around 3' 6" in height for men and 3' 2" for women respectively, and they have a fascination and love of precious metals and gems.

They are the finest smiths in the world. You cannot find a greater or more well crafted set of armor or weaponry unless you do so from a Dwarven smith.

They are not fond of humans or Orcs, both of whom they've had several bloody wars with in the past. They are, on the contrary, rather friendly with Elves of all kinds as well as Miithi an regularly engage in trade and friendly relations with them such as festivals of kinship.

Dwarves are unable to use magic. Instead they focus their efforts and attention on the mining of precious gems and metals, and smithing.

5) Orcs

Orcs are very large and boast the greatest level of physical strength of any humanoid race. They might not be the fastest or the most nimble. But they don't need to be. They can take several arrow shots to what would normally be kill zones on other races, and can take numerous blows from blunt weapons which could crush the bones of other humanoids as well.

They are not on friendly terms with other humanoids of any kind. They are naturally a dominant race who seek to settle and conquer wherever they can. They do not trade with others, nor do they engage in politics. They keep to themselves unless they find something they want, at which point they try to take it by force.

Orcs do not use magic and have little to no natural resistance to magical forces. Even weaker magic attacks can repel the strongest of Orcs. But if you try to take them on without magic... Well, good luck.

6) Nymphs

Nymphs are special humanoids who can literally become one with nature. They can blend into trees, the ground, leaves, even the grass, to escape pursuers or potential threats. They can do much of what Faeries can in that they too can call upon nature to aid them in any way necessary.

They are a highly reclusive race who keep to their own. They don't trade as they've no use for material items. They live as one with nature and that's all they need. To meet a Nymph is to court the Gods of luck, as if they feel inclined to reveal themselves to you then that means they have deemed your soul to be exceptionally pure and are unafraid of you. That's a very, very, very rare occurrence.

Nymphs are naturally magical creatures with their bond with nature. As well they most commonly have an affinity for Lyric Magic and Seed Magic.

7) Miithi

Miithi are shapeshifting creatures who are human in appearance, but often sport between one and three features of the animal form they can change into. A wolf Miithi, for instance, in human form may have a wolf tail and ears with the rest of their body being human.

Miithi are friendly with every humanoid race save the Orcs, whom they despise above all others. Their respective races have been at near constant war for thousands of years.

Miithi rare ever are born with magical abilities due to the fact that their ability to transform into an animal is often all they ever want or need. However it is known that the Miithi have varied magical affinities including the elements, Healing, Symbol magic, and Alchemic magic.

9) Halflings

Halflings are humanoids who are around half the size of regular humans, hence their name. They lead quiet lives and do not engage in violence unless absolutely necessary. They are not exactly warriors, nor are they what you would call diplomats. They stay to themselves mostly and only engage in occasional trade and acts of hospitality. The finest inns in the world belong to Halfling proprietors.

Halflings, like Dwarves, do not have magical affinity.

10) Mermaids

Mermaids exist in a permanent state of half human, half fish. They are a lot like Halflings in that they don't engage in violence unless absolutely necessary and they aren't exactly the most sociable of races. They don't really need trade with any other races because they have everything they need in their home beneath the sea. However they do occasionally deal with other humanoids when they feel it suits their purposes.

Mermaids most commonly are born with an affinity for Lyric Magic, but occasionally have an affinity to Calling Magic as well.

11) Dragons

The mighty Dragon Race, known as the First Children of the world, are the largest and most powerful creatures in the world.

They exist in one of two forms: Their human form, in which they are indistinguishable from humans, and their Dragon form.

Their human forms and Dragon forms both are capable of harnessing and using any form of magic in the known world. In fact it is not out of place to say they are the original proprietors of magic from whom the rest of the humanoid races learned from.

The Dragons once inhabited every continent in the world, but now live solely in the central continent of the world known as The World's Wing. They live in harmony with one another and have cut off communications with the outside world. The only time another humanoid ever sees a Dragon is if the Dragon in question decides to leave The World's Wing for their own sake out of a desire to see more of the world than their utopian home.

The Dragons are immune to magic outside of that used by other Dragons. Their scales are so hard that no human weaponry can pierce them, save their underbellies which are comprised of large and more flexible scales. Several well placed arrows to major organs could bring a Dragon down, but it would take an army of Dark Elf archers to bring down even one.
