Fantasy The Queen's Madness Lore & Politics

Seer
Seer

An odd people, as even though they are their own race, they're born solely to humans. Seers and humans are able to intermingle, but their children are almost always human. Two Seers will have a Seer child, but they are so rare that the chances of a man and a woman coming together to have a child is unlikely.

Seers are, as a rule, blind. They possess two main abilities, being able to See into both the past and the present. The past can always be easily Seen, while the future tends to be murky. The further into the future you go, the more uncertain things become, as there are too many ways every situation can go and it's impossible to see all of them. They usually need some sort of anchor however. A person or a place or an object. Something to specifically look at through the past or the future, otherwise they are in danger of being lost.

Every Seer has their own individual ability as well, something that's special to them. For some this is the ability to see the past with crystal clearness, even parts that may be hidden for some reason. Others are able to cast what they see onto a reflective object, such as water or a crystal ball, so that others may see it. Some can see more clearly into the future, see the twisting paths fate can take and the options that it gives. And still some may have Prophecies, visions of the future that are often nearly set in stone, difficult to avoid though still possible.

Draxxan
Draxxan

An endangered species. Asavar is the first one anyone has seen in centuries. Outside of the large size, their race appears human, for all intents and purpose, but it is what is inside that the difference between the Draxxan and Humans appear. Draxxan live for centuries, they are physically stronger and tougher then normal humans, but their emotions are far greater and intense. No human, perhaps, no being can understand the depth of emotion Draxxan feel. Their rage is all consuming, their love all binding, their sorrow soul crushing and their pain blinding. If a Draxxan's emotions were the sun, the same emotion of a human would be a mere flickering candle.

This intense way of feeling can drive them insane, as such, controlling their emotions becomes paramount. Some do it through, well, sheer control. Master their emotions and their emotional responses, others focus their minds on a single facet of life, a single dedication in an attempt to channel all the emotion for a better purpose. This makes Draxxan incredibly dangerous as while they are often incredibly driven, they also tend to be dangerously unstable and, at the worst, obsessive.

But this is not what led to their near extinction, it is the soul binding that did. When a Draxxan meets a special being, one connected to them by fate, there is a chance a bond will be established. This most often happens between lovers, but it is not always so. Close comrades in arms or even family members may have this bond establish between them, and there is only ever one bond for any Draxxan. This bond is a linking of the souls and a melding of the mind. Between two Draxxan it is a thing of beauty. Their emotions are shared, and so, easier to control, their destines entwined in life and in death, so if the bond mate perishes, the other shall as well as the psychic backlash of losing their bond mate is too much for their mind's to handle. This bond lowers their breeding rate as a Draxxan can only have children with his bond mate and no amount of effort or magic can change that, as such, when the bond forms between two non-lovers, the Draxxan race takes another blow.

But the worst... is when a Draxxan establishes a bond with another species. The other species cannot feel the Draxxan's feelings, they cannot hear their thoughts, if the Draxxan perishes, they will live. But the Draxxan still feels everything from the other. The other species emotions will bombard the Draxxan pushing their reserves to the limit just to keep up with all the bombarding emotions on their own, if the Draxxan bond mate dies, despite the other species being in no danger should the opposite occur, the Draxxan will die. If this bond mate of another species betrays the Draxxan either through laying with another or betraying their trust, it will drive the Draxxan mad with grief and shatter their control making them enter a state known only as, 'Drakhan', the Black Rage from which the Draxxan will never emerge from.

The threat that destroyed the Draxxan race... was the Draxxan. Their exposure to the other races doomed them to a death sentence they never recovered from.

Dragons and Dragoons
Dragons & Dragoons

Dragons are an ancient race, old and nearly immortal. They mate for life, but do not usually reproduce often. Leaving them with depleted numbers, but the can still be seen on a rare occasion. Mostly they keeps to mountain regions where they prefer to reside in caves in their natural forms (having four legs and two wings). They can take a human form. Only the oldest and most powerful dragons can sometimes learn to control and take a half-form. This half form is usually mostly human looking, but a little taller and larger with wings, scales, and talons that make holding anything impossible. Other aspects vary from dragon to dragon.

Dragons that mate with other races are known for reproducing more frequently, but this isn't a common occurance. Dragons mate for life because when they choose their mate, a connection is formed. It's deep, linking mind and soul. A dragon does not survive the death of a mate unless there are children to take care of, but even at that, as soon as the child can take care of itself, the dragon will die. Their non-dragon mate's also suffer if the dragon dies. Some go complete insane, some will kill themselves. Some survive and manage to live on but always in some form of pain. Once mated to a dragon, a person will never be able to develope such a relationship again with another. Although, this bond can extend the natural lifespan of a dragon's mate.

The half dragon children are known as Dragoons, they are either a dragon with a half form they can take (if the mother was a dragon), or they are like their non-dragon parent with a half-form option (if the father was a dragon). The half form takes a great deal to learn and master. Dragoons don't usually start finding it until near puberty. Learning their half form in the beginnig is an exhausting experience and can be painful. They cannot hold it for very long until they get more familiar with it and they need time to recover between transformations. Even once they get there, it takes years to really master it, well into adulthood before they can switch forms easily. Once they can, most can hold either form indefinitely, although they are drained initially afterward.

Dragoons are longer lived, but aspects about them are heavily influenced but their non-dragon parent.

As dragons have such long lives, they age much slower. They don't reach puberty for several decades, typically, but they are mostly self sufficient long before then. They live mostly isolated in family units, parents and children. Dragons only give birth every few decades, and usually only have one or two children with them at a time. Mixed matings may have more. Children don't stay with parents much past puberty, some leave sooner, and don't often have much contact after leaving. They are independent creatures.

There are a few sacred times where dragons will gather, but not much is known about these and dragons are very private about them. They don't have much of a hierarchy; power is important to them and the respect it above all else.

Mix mated pairs do not attend these gatherings. While mating outside their race is not against their laws or customs, it is not a widely accepted practice. Moat dragons view other races as inferior and to mate with a non-dragon is seen as something akin to weakness. This is not strictly true, but dragons are often haughty and aloof. These matings are more likely to live in towns or more populated areas for the convenience of the non-dragon mate.

Dragons come in all shapes, sizes, and colors; bulky or slim, big and small, black, blue, gold, and purple. Their human forms reflect their dragon forms, hair and eyes often of color like their scales. They are arrogant, and vain, with a typical love for gold and other shiny things. Some take it to obsession and will steal anything they can. This obsession is what gets most dragons killed, though mated dragons are not as likely to take those risks.

While their scales are superior protection, they have several weak spots where they are softer to allow for movement. All the joints have softer scales, and their wings are incredibly delicate and sensitive. Damage to the wings will prevent a dragon from flying and damage to the wings joints can be painful enough to kill a dragon. Around and under the jaw is the next most fatal weak spot. That area is more leathery skin than scales. The abdomen is scaled and not as soft as the joints, but a sharp enough blade with enough force can still gut them.

Dragons have a natural ability for telepathy, however they can only send messages out to others. They can however receive messages sent to them from others, even non-dragon mates. They cannot read minds, no matter how hard they try, and the range varies depending on how powerful the dragon is. Even a weak dragon can sent across a battle field, though, but not even the strongest dragon could send a message to more than a handful of minds within a quarter of the kingdom around them.

Despite their superiority complexes, dragons are dedicated to their families and generally very loving creatures. Non-dragon mates have often described the mating to be beyond anything experienced with anyone else. Dragons dote on their loved ones and give them everything they can, not just in a material sense, but emotionally and in every way.

Beastkin
Beastkin

Beastkin is a very broad term that covers three 'sub-races' that are closely related, yet different and separate, and it is not wise to call one by the name of the other if you wish to avoid confrontation as they tend to look unkindly and consider it to be a great insult. The culture, racial abilities and weaknesses all depends on the sub-category they belong to, as well as the animal that they resemble, a tiger beastkin, for example, will be far more deadly then a bunny beastkin, a bear beastkin will have far more power then a mouse beastkin. While these different 'animals' are, indeed, different, they are still beastkin and are related and can interbreed, but let us break them into their sub-categories so we may delve deeper into it.

Vavikin

Vavikin are more commonly known and referred to as Demihumans which a bit of a misnomer as, in truth, a demihuman does not need to have 'human' blood in them, but it is the name that most refer to them as the demihuman, like their name implies, is incredibly close to humanity, they have small differences, but overall, their similarity to humanity raises many eyebrows. Some scholars believe they came to be due to extensive inbreeding between Feyakin and other races, primarily humans, and over centuries of this a 'mutt' race was born, of course, saying this to a demihuman is likely to end with the person being thrown out of the nearest window. If they do have fur, it tends to be light and only on small areas of their bodies, depending on their 'breed', they will have ears and tails, some will have claws or paws, but overall, their similarity with humans is startling. They come in various shapes and sizes depending on their 'breed', a tiger demihuman may have lightly stripped fur, sharp claws, a tail and ears. A bear demihuman will be 'larger' then a human, bulker, with the ears to match and may have claws. They compare favorably with a human with some advantages depending on the breed, a rabbit demihuman, for example, will be a bit quicker then a normal human, a bear demihuman a bit stronger, but overall, there is no true great advantage they will enjoy.

Despite popular belief, Demihumans will not have 'litters' regardless of their breed. Much like other bipedal sentient mammals, giving birth to more then one offspring is incredibly unnatural, although the maturity rate of their young is much faster with them being fully mature around 10 years of age, but their lifespan also tends to be shorter with 60 being a venerated elder. There is not a nation of demihumans, there is no real 'culture' of the demihuman, they exist within almost all kingdoms across nearly all continents, while they do have a sense of 'identity' especially as, much of the time, their race makes up the majority of the 'slums' in any major populated area. Because of this Demihumans live a.. rough life. Because they often make up a large number of the poor, many take up crime which destroys their reputation making them the target of bigotry, but that is not the worst of it, due to their appearance, they are considered 'exotic' by many and, as such, are often the target of slavers, and with no true power to stop them, demihumans are often left at the rougher mercies of such slavers and posh nobility that see them as little better then the dirt they tread on even if it is 'fashionable' to have demihuman 'servants'. Because of this, Demihumans tend to take a dour, and distrustful, stance towards other races, preferring companies of their own, but because of this preference for their own, and their large presence in slums, the gap between themselves and other races grow, and with it, the bigotry aimed at them.

Feyakin

Unlike their demihuman cousins, Feyakin share much with their animal cousins. They tend to appear far more bestial, most having fur over their entire bodies, having long tails, claws, paws, and some will even have snouts or multiple legs (in the case of centaurs and the like). This does reflect their strength as a Feyakin is far stronger then their demihuman cousins, their 'breeds' giving them a greater advantage. A bunny feyakin is incredibly fast and agile, a bear feyakin able to go toe to toe with even the mightiest of orcs and the like. It is important to note that when two feyakin mate, and they are of different breeds, it tends to be the random grace of 'chance' that determines the breed of the child. If a tiger feyakin and a wolf feyakin had a child, it has equal chance of being a wolf or a tiger, a hybrid between the two is not possible. Like the demihuman, their lives are shorter then humans, but they also mature faster. Unlike their cousins, feyakin have a culture. They have no true 'kingdom', instead they are wandering nomadic tribes that respect no standing borders. These various tribes, which all have their own history and traditions, wander the world trading, foraging and, occasionally, acting as mercenaries when required. This does make their presence, sometimes, unwanted by nations, but any efforts to force these tribes off or to settle has met with little success. Not all feyakin belong to these tribes, some were born out and others leave to go adventuring or to find their glory in the world beyond, a common rite of passage for many young feyakin is to go to the outside world, claim glory, and bring back trophies to the tribe. What constitutes 'glory' entirely depending on the feyakin in question.

Feyakin can breed with other races, and it is noted that should a feyakin, and say a human, breed, the child will be the same 'breed' as the feyakin.. but noticeable less. bestial which gives credence to Demihumans being a long offshoot descendant of the feyakin, but this is not too common. Feyakin prefer to mate with only the greatest of possible choices, and many 'lesser' races simply fail to stack up under the scrutiny of the feyakin's high standards. Having two or three children per birth is not uncommon for the feyakin.

Ravakin

The Ravakin are... in truth, just Feyakin, however to say as much would be the greatest insult one can give to the feyakin. The Ravakin are 'The Ones Without Honor,' they are violent and monstrous, they have given in to their more bestial nature, that is not to say they are mindless as most are sentient, to some degree, but they tend to be butchers and savages, existing in nomadic raiding parties wandering the lands raping and pillaging their way using their mastery of terrain to escape repercussion. The most infamous of the Ravakin are the Minotaurs. While there are Feyakin who are 'Minotaurs', the sheer number of them that become Ravakin are such that they have given everyone, even other Feyakin, a wariness at their presence. They have all the same basic biological features of Feyakin, it is merely their culture.. mindset and.. purpose that separates them.
