  • In such a small space, anything and everything that was spoken between them would be heard even if a persons inquiries were solely directed towards a specific individual. Questions of a more personal nature would be difficult to ask, or perhaps difficult to answer in a group setting compared to a private conversation.

    " What are your motivations for accepting this request?" she asked Gensho frankly. The 'monk' tilted his head towards her and looked her squarely in the eyes as if to respond her sincerity with her own.

    " Celes... Silence is Golden. "     Gensho answered. Ryusuke scoffed quietly and Nadezchka wore a smile that pitied Celes as soon as they heard the echoing expression.

    ' Dammit, this stuck-up monk! '     she thought. " Seriously Gensho!? " she yelled. Gensho however did not say it in a sarcastic or joking manner, and his stare into her eyes showed her clarity and sincerity. The young maiden then remembered the conversation she had with him last night. The 'monk' had revealed to her that he was in the North to 'help' a friend of his. She deduced then, that accepting this request somehow furthers his personal motives. Her expression showed to Gensho that she realized he already gave her the answer to her question. When she looked up towards him after quickly thinking about it, he had a calm smile and nodded to her.

    " Did you two speak to each other before we left about something? "     Nadezchka asked suspicious of their actions. She was aware of the exchanges that were made between them using only their facial expressions, however she was curious as to what the exchange was all about.

    " Perhaps. "     Gensho answered. " Please rest assured that it was just this one preaching about matters of life. "

    " Sorry everyone. That was not a good question to ask. We all have our reasons for being here. "

    " Now that we got that out of the way, the more important question is if anyone is incapable of performing Artes? "     Ryusuke inquired.

  • The question posed by Ryusuke stumped her. She had an idea about what he could possibly be talking about but she did not want to blindly acknowledge or answer inappropriately then regret her words later on. She determined to ask for clarification. " What are 'Artes' ? "

    All three of them looked at her when she said those words. It was clear to her she was the only one that was not informed enough to know what Artes were. The one who asked the question responded to hers. " Well that answers that. "

    " Hey! "     Celes interjected. She did not like the fact that she was brushed off as an ignorant so casually. " I'm just asking for some clarification. " She waited for Gensho or Nadezchka to explain what Artes are, but surprisingly it was Ryusuke that did so.

    " Artes are special abilities that only a select few people can perform. Artes enhance a warriors abilities and options in combat. "

    " Right... ok, thanks. I was just unfamiliar with the term is all. I've seen it before of course, in battles with other guild groups and such."

    " Well then, now that you know, care to answer the question? "

    " Question? Oh right! Um.. I can use Artes.. sort of an Arte. "

  • Ryusuke and Nadezchka felt that Celes' answer was vague and unconvincing. Everyone present witnessed some of her skills in physical combat in that initial duel against Ryusuke. However the dual did not showcase any Artes as per the regulation placed by Gensho. Given the situation of the mission, the use of Artes may not be a necessity, but it would prove a valuable asset. The others hesitated to call her out on the answer, but Gensho was curious enough to ask.

    " Celes, what is your arte? "

    " ... I can shoot fireballs!...."     she exclaimed proudly. Gensho nodded in an intrigue fashion while Ryusuke seemed disinterested along with Nadezchka.

    " Well, I can believe that."     Ryusuke said.

    " The technical term is Pyro Blast. It is one of eight standard attack spells. No doubt you learned this from a Basic Arte Tome, yes?. "     stated Nadezchka. " If we were to combat the creature inside the forest, it would be best to avoid using Fire elemental artes, otherwise incendiaries may cause a forest fire. "

    " Collateral damage, miss tree-hugger. "

    " Obviously, that particular situation would also put us at risk, not to mention the countless other living things within the forest. We are there to complete a request, not indulge in your desire to wipe out living things. " The two stared at each other from across the small room while Gensho tried to divert the subject in order to calm the rising tension between them.

    " Are you proficient in the use of this fire elemental attack, Celes? "

    " Proficient..."     Celes did not understand what he meant by his question. " Sorry, I don't quite understand. I mean, I have used it before in battle, a few times. "

    " He's asking about your control. "     Nadezchka interrupted. " Celes, can you control the Arte proficiently. " Celes remained unsure how to respond. " Like this." Nadezchka pulled her hand forward before everyone and a small floating sphere of fire appeared above her palm. " Many study basic artes so quickly that they neglect the proper training of control. They figure that using it in combat need not require control. "

  • Celes was more than impressed with the degree of control that Nadezchka exerted over the fire elemental. Compared to her, she was a novice, who would most likely get the fireball to blow up in her face than anything else. After her companion had terminated the Arte, Celes shook her head slowly in response to the question. " I.. uh, can't do that. "

    " Like I said, that answers that."     Ryusuke repeated. " What about you monk? " He asked Gensho. Nadezchka's display confirmed to him that she was more capable than Celes, yet Gensho remained a mystery. " Well? "

    " Yes. "     he answered. There was a slight awkward silence after that. Ryusuke and the others may have wanted to see some sort of proof from Gensho, but he just smiled remained silent.

    " We should determine combat roles then. "     Ryusuke continued. " We should play to our strengths and try and cover all the basics. "

    " I specialize mostly in Higher level long range Artes. "     Nadezchka explained.

    " This one is proficient with Defensive and Healing Artes. "

    " Yeah that figures. "     Ryusuke chuckled. " I'll be the front line assault. Celes, since you have close range combat skills and can use Pyro Blast to some degree then you'll be with me. "

    .......ugh, who made this guy the boss... but given the circumstances, the others don't seem the type to have gone on too many hunting parties....

    " Sure... "

  • A while into their train ride they had reached the halfway point at an unknown station. Instead of a regular passenger station, this stop was more of a cargo loading station. The train staff took this opportunity to bring refreshments to everyone aboard. Soon after releasing some cargo, the locomotive was underway once again. The scenery changed drastically. From their departure point to this last visited station, the train tracks cruised through open space, grasslands with distant views of mountains or patches of large forest on the horizon. This next stretch passed through a narrow pathway in the middle of a coniferous forest. It was a sea of trees anywhere you looked. The train tracks were built along a river that had cleared this pathway through the dense forest.

    " We're slowing down." Ryusuke mentioned. The others looked out the window to confirm his statement.

    " It's as if you never have taken a train ride before. " Nadezchka replied. " When trails go through forests like this, the train has to go slower. It's not uncommon for fallen trees to block the tracks, if we went any faster the whole train could derail. "

    " Yeah.... like that train crash near the Maxwell border. " Celes stated using her in-depth knowledge as a Chronicler.

    " That was terrible. Half the passengers..."

    Suddenly, the train jolted from trying to quickly stop itself. The motion threw the woman off their seats, while Gensho and Ryusuke quickly reacted to catch them before they sustained any injury. The loud screeching dissipated slowly the more the train braked until finally the trees remained still when looking out the window.

    " I'll go take a look."     Ryusuke, who had been holding onto Celes placed her back on her feet.

    " Just wait a minute! "     Celes shouted.

    " What? "

    " The conductor will probably come and inform everyone, there is no need for us to get up. "     Nadezchka stated. Ryusuke did not like having to wait on others to inform him. And yet, while trying to reassure him, she was clinging onto Gensho's garb rather tightly to which Celes made a passing remark about. Nadezchka quickly released Gensho from her grasp settled herself back into her seat. Gensho and Celes had a quick laugh about it. Surely enough, Nadezchka proved herself correct as the conductor came inside a few minutes later to let everyone know about the situation.

    " Well that was the last thing I expected. "     Celes said when the conductor left. " Is there a word for something like this..."

    " Fate. " Gensho stated ominously. The conductor had told them some trees had fallen onto the tracks and had the engineer not spotted them as quickly as he did, it would have been disastrous. However now they were at the mercy of the train staff as they needed to clear the fallen trees, which would take some time.

  • Ten minutes had passed since the conductor came in and told the group that they were delayed because there were trees that had fallen onto the tracks. With the train no longer in motion and the group stuck in a confined space, time felt as if it was passing slowly. Unable to wait any longer, Ryusuke, with sword always in hand, proceeded to exit the cabin.

    " Now where are you going? "     questioned Celes.

    " To see what is still holding us up. "     he responded before closing the sliding door behind him.

    " That guy is really impatient. "     Celes complained. " He's probably going to get us into trouble. " Celes then chased after Ryusuke. Nadezchka and Gensho also followed suit, but at a slower pace. Everyone else on board remained calmly and looked at the passerby's wondering what they were doing moving about. By the time the two of them reached the front of the train, Celes and Ryusuke were speaking with some of the workers.

    " Hey slowpoke's. "

    " What's going on? "

    " Someone was just explaining how they were assessing the situation before starting to cut the trees down. It seems that parts of the track were damaged as well. "

    " It is no surprise. "     Remarked Gensho. " Look. " He then pointed towards the largest tree among the group. " That large one must have toppled those in front of it. A tree that large would cause major denting even to a steel rail. " They all noticed the large section of rail that was severely bent.

    " Tell everyone to back away. I'll get these nuisances out quickly. " Ryusuke ordered.

    " Who are those people. "     Nadezchka wondered as she pointed to a few individuals who were standing directly in front of Ryusuke.

    " Those were some volunteers among the passengers. They offered to help clear the trees. The conductor agreed to their help because they said they can wield Artes. Then Ryusuke came along and said the same thing and that's where things are up to right now. "     The group of men opposing Ryusuke did not take to kindly to the fact that someone was pushing aside their efforts. They began taunting the young swordsman, using profanities and such. One even used the fact that he was a foreigner as an insult, using terms such as ' imperial dog ' , ' dirt slave ' and ' sea scum ' all derogatory references used on people of specific regions of the world.



    Destiny System

    Ryusuke's tolerance runs out for this group of men. He WILL take action.

    1. Ryusuke beats the crap out of those guys.

    2. Celes intervenes to stop but things go awry

    3. Nadezchka takes action to rid the trees herself before the brawl leads them into trouble.

    4. Gensho saves the poor misguided fools from becoming fodder for Ryusuke's sword.

  • After Celes had explained the situation to both Gensho and Nadezchka, the young blond walked towards the fallen trees to inspect the scene. Meanwhile Ryusuke, who's tolerance for the uncouth group of men taunting him was up. He slowly and deliberately pulled out his sword in front of everyone. Celes witnessed the situation deteriorating quickly and made her way between all of them to prevent a fight, so too did some of the train's staff. Uninterested in such pettiness, Nadezchka carefully observed up and down the trees. She pulled up her long skirt as she knelt down to inspect the stumped area of the trees. What she saw concerned her so much that she nearly tripped as she got up.

    The others managed to get the tension to ease off as the opposing sides distanced themselves from each other. " What do you think you were doing?!" Celes loudly whispered. " Were just lucky the trains armed escort didn't see this going on. " Ryusuke chose to ignore her words which frustrated her again. Suddenly the earth started to rumble. Beneath their feet all were able to sense a shaking though it was not enough to topple anyone, just enough to be felt. " What's going on now?! " Celes yelled. She looked at Gensho and he was unfazed and staring straight at Nadezchka. Celes quickly turned her attention.

    The young woman was in front of the heap of trees her left hand projecting towards them and her right placed on her temple. It did not take too long for all present to realize the shaking was coming from her. Then, the earth beneath the logs lifted vertically several feet in the air. The motion was so brisk, the largest log started to move towards the river bank, taking all of the other trees along with it. When it was all done, the tracks were cleared, and only the reparations to the trail were needed. The event surprised many, none the least where Nadezchka's companions.

    " Artes right ? "     Celes said softly.

    " Indeed. "     Gensho replied.

    1. Nadezchka decides to discuss what she noticed about the fallen trees?

    2. Celes' awe with Artes leads to further questions?

  • With the fallen trees peacefully resting at the edge of the riverbank, locomotive crews started working to tear the broken parts of the rail and replace it with pieces they carry. Because such incidents are not uncommon all trains have one train car dedicated to track reparation. Celes was coming back from talking to the conductor as she saw Gensho standing by the train with Nadezchka and Ryusuke leaning on the machine itself. " The conductor said it should only take an hour to repair everything and get going. " Celes said. " He also told me to thank you for the help. " directing that gratitude to Nadezchka.

    " I am glad we can proceed. Nothing like inefficiency to frustrate you. " she mentioned. " So unless anyone of us can help with repair work, perhaps we should go back to the cabin. " her words hinted to a little reprimand to Ryusuke for his inefficient waste of time confronting those men. Before returning Ryusuke said he would stay outside. The group went back in as tea and coffee were being served as everyone waited. When they returned into the cabin they all sat in their previous positions.

    " What's up with that guy, 'fresh air' he says. I don't get him. "

    " Did you see something was amiss with those trees, Ms. Nadezchka? "     Gensho asked. The young woman found it unnerving that he was so perceptive. " Is that what you and Ryusuke spoke about? "

    ' huh? did I miss something? ' Celes did not notice, but Ryusuke confronted Nadezchka earlier.

    " Yes. How did you know? "

    " Just a guess. "     his response was met with a glare from Nadezchka.

    " I wasn't going to mention it, but the largest tree was what caused all the others to fall. That is obvious. However how it fell was not by normal means. "

    " What do you mean? "

    " The stumped area was mostly smooth and only a small portion of the edge had broken parts. "

    " You mean to say that it was sliced through the majority of it. "     Gensho stated.

    " Exactly... Who or what were not discernible. However before it could be discovered, I thought it prudent to rid the evidence before panic sets in. "

    " Why? Shouldn't we let everyone know? "

    " No, I don't. "     Nadezchka responded curtly. " People would panic and those in charge would have even more of a hard time getting the situation under control. Ryusuke noticed this possibility as well, and I would assume that is why he stayed outside. It is more than likely that whatever caused this is long gone or would not come back at all. " she concluded. Such opinions contradicted with Celes' views as she is a Chronicler, sworn to report and inform the truth.

  • In the early afternoon, the locomotive arrived at the Windsor Station. Preparations were underway as many passengers were getting off here. Most were miners and loggers heading in the opposite direction of Celes and her group. Celes herself, was getting her belongings together when Nadezchka came through the door. " Almost ready? I wondered why you needed to unpack so much in the first place as it was not going to be a long trip. " she wondered.

    " I needed to switch out of my casual clothes and into my adventure gear. Say, you're going to travel like that? " Celes asked about Nadezchka's semi-formal attire. It certainly was not meant for adventuring of any kind.

    " No need to worry. I shall be quite fine. "     the young woman responded. The two brought their belongings out the train car. They were greeted by Ryusuke who stood by waiting for them to get off. " Is Gensho not with you? "

    " He said he needed to do something. "     Ryusuke answered. " No idea what that means." Just then, Gensho showed up.

    " Hello there!"     he yelled. He was pulling along two large animals; Papaopamus* ( CHECK OUT THE LIFE ENCYCLOPEDIA TAB FOR MORE DETAILS ) They in turn were pulling a caravan that had been off-loaded.

    " Where did you acquire a Caravan, Gensho? "     Nadezchka inquired.

    " This is a gift from our benefactor Requestor. "     Celes then realized that the extra tickets and forms she was given back at the station were for the transportation of the animals and the caravan. " It seems we will not have to do any sleeping out in the open. "

    " This will definitely help."     Ryusuke added. " All right then let's get on. "

  • While Ryusuke helped Nadezchka bring their belongings inside the caravan, Celes took a little time to admire the contraption. Although Caravans were somewhat commonplace in the Northern Kingdoms, this one had a unique feel to it. She certainly did not recognize the model, it had six large wheels, lots of nighttime lighting, 3 entrances, a few windows and was overall large compared to her. She came around to the front where she found Gensho, seated in the driver position.

    " Are you sure you can handle them? "     she cheekily asked. Celes did have some basic knowledge about Papaopamus and conducting them on journeys.

    " Not to worry. Papaopamus are very gentle in nature. " he said as he stepped down. The monk approached the large beast from the front and began embracing it. Celes was taken aback by his gesture. Many individuals would be a little weary of animals that were not their own especially if one were to use them in such a capacity as travel. However not only was this man overly fond of these creatures, it seemed they too were enthralled by him. " Did you know they have names, Celes? "

    " Oh? how do you know? "     He motioned for her to come closer. After pulling away some tufts of hair from the horn area, Celes saw a steel tag wrapped closely to the base of the horn. " Magellan? " she read. The name somewhat amused her. " Let me guess, the other's name is Ephinea. "

    " Bravo. Great detective work. " he remarked. Celes' guess was not special feat. Magellan was the name of one of Elegos' twin moons. And since the animals came in a pair, it would be only logical the other be name Ephinea, after the other moon.

    " Everything is on board. We should leave now. "     Ryusuke said, opening the caravan door.

    " After you Celes. "     Gensho directed the young woman aboard the conductors perch. Once he was done securing all the harness' and ropes, he jumped aboard as well. " Let us be off! Maggie! Ephi! " he yelled as the two beasts tugged the massive caravan along.

  • The Caravan entered into wide open pathway that went through Windsor Woods. The pathway, known as Alban Pass, had been cleared decades before to connect the Windsor Farming Region and the Kensington Express line that was being built years earlier. It was wide enough for another two caravans to ride along side by side. Ryusuke came outside to discuss where to lead the Caravan. Celes took this opportunity to join with Nadezchka and explore the inside. The interior was as spacious as she thought given Celes was truly impressed with the outside dimensions. Nadezchka was sitting upright on one of the many beds and reading her novel ' The Fall of Ultima '

    " Are you trying to finish that novel today? "     Celes asked. She observed that Nadezchka had gone through half the book already.

    " It is to pass the time until we arrive. "     Nadezchka answered.

    " I see. Even so, this caravan is something else. I've never been in one like this before. "

    " It is the latest Journeyman Edition Mark VI "     Celes wondered how her companion could possibly know that.

    " A what, now? "

    " Journeyman Caravan for short. It is capable of sleeping 6 people comfortably on these 3 bunk style beds. There is a kitchenette over there, complete with countertop and iron stove. Coincidentally, the stove is also a means of generating heat inside the caravan during cold nights. There is storage near the rear, and here and here. " She pointed to the floor where Celes noted two doors that opened up for sizable underfloor space.

    " You must have noticed the steel ladder that leads to the roof, there can be found additional storage up there. Large windows, exterior area and spot lights to illuminate our surroundings. However the most impressive feature is this..." Nadezchka then showed Celes her palm, to which she conjured a fireball, like she did on the train. She aimed it at the floor and threw it, which shocked Celes.

    " What are you doing?! "     She yelled before Nadezchka pointed out to her what has happened. The fireball did not even leave a smolder mark on the wood.

    " Impressive no? The wood is definitely Sacred Madeis and was alchemically enchanted even further. " Celes knew not, what Madeis was, but she knew of alchemic enchanting, even so she nodded along. She wanted to know how Nadezchka guessed all this, but kept her mouth shut for the moment.

    " So you're saying we're invincible! "

    " No, not exactly. We are resistant to elemental artes to some degree. But a significant attack would tear a hole. " she candidly explained. The young woman then moved closer to Celes to whisper into her ear. " Celes, this whole Caravan alone, is worth 4 times more than what the mission is paying us in total. " That figure boggled her mind. " I am letting you know. But let's keep this between the two of us. "

    Celes agreed. The other two could not possibly realize this as Caravan's of this manner were only built in the North. Celes could feel secure knowing that Gensho and Ryusuke did not possess this knowledge, she was still unsure of them as outsiders.

  • The sunlight went from filtering through the numerous branches to shadowing the trunks of the trees as the Sun itself started to set in the far west. Gensho was still conducting the caravan and Ryusuke went ahead to lead the way as a precautionary measure. By this time Nadezchka had finished reading her novel ' The Fall of Ultima' and Celes was taking notes to use in her article submission as a Kingdom Chronicler. Gensho opened the entrance near him and signaled the women that Ryusuke was at the exit of the woods and that they would arrive there shortly.

    " Look at that! "     Celes pointed out. " It's all farm land and rolling hills as far as the eye can see. " she exclaimed.

    " Have you not been here before? "     Gensho inquired.

    " I may be from this Kingdom, but it's a big kingdom, and I don't have the time or luxury to visit and see everything you know. "

    " Point taken. "

    " Herds of Andalusians and Papaopamus' near those enclosed fences. I wonder where to go. "     Nadezchka said. " Where did that swordsman go off to? "

    " Ryusuke went to find some directions to the Farm owned by Gavin Fraser. " Gensho replied. Once the Caravan was over a small hill they saw Ryusuke standing near a crossroads seemingly waiting for everyone to arrive. Once the caravan reached a certain point he pointed westward before jumping aboard, and Gensho obliged with the direction. He explained how a local passerby in riding a large wagon gave him directions to the Fraser Farmlands.

    " What should we do when we get there? "     Celes asked everyone.

  • Not long after exiting the Windsor woods, they were able to find the farmland of Gavin Fraser thanks to the direction that Ryusuke had obtained by a local resident. They arrived at the farmer's home and explained the situation to him. Mr. Fraser was so delighted someone came to help that the elderly man shed a few tears in front of everyone. He told them how little hope he had that the Requestor would be able to fulfill his word, but seeing the group there strengthened his hope. He took everyone to survey area that the 'culprit' attacks from. As was deduced, the attacks were from the Windsor woods where part of the farmland bordered. A 1.5 meter tall fence was enough for his herds of papaopamous and andalusians to stay within the confines of the farm, but whenever a stray wandered over here, it would inevitably taken. He pointed out the fact that the fence had been broken down several times. No one in town wished to help him with his problem, so Mr. Fraser had to build a new fenced-off area, effectively cutting the grazing land by half. It was the only way for him to keep track of the herds.

    Mr. Fraser's wife had prepared dinner for everyone and he even offered beds and rooms for everyone in his home. Celes and the others politely declined the offer citing the Caravan was more than enough and that they did not want to impose. Staying out with the herds would also allow them the chance at a glance of this predator. They reassured the family that this nuisance would be dealt with. With that, they returned to the caravan, and prepared to sleep. The men were getting everything ready in the caravan while the women were inside the home changing.

  • It was decided upon that the group would start mid morning. Farmer Fraser was accustomed to leaving the herd in the open as he was not able to build a large enough shelter for the numbers he had. As a result the attacks were done at night many times. The Caravan was therefore brought near the herd so that if anything should happen, they would at least be aware of it. Ryusuke and Gensho both volunteered for the night watch just in case the 'predator' would try and snatch one of their Papaopamus. Ryusuke would take the first watch from 10pm to 3am and Gensho the second from 3am to 7am while the Celes and Nadezchka would be able to sleep easy. Nadezchka did not argue with this decision and retired fairly early in the night so as to get an early start. Ryusuke went out to gather enough wood to burn the fire until morning. Gensho settled his two new friends for sleep beside the caravan.

    " So are you naturally good with animals? "     Celes asked.

    " Papaopamus are like humans. Anyone who is treated kindly will respond in like manner. "

    " Heh, I think these papapopamus are better behaved than people. "     she laughed.

    " Haha, perhaps. "     Gensho replied. " It would seem that Ephi and Maggie accustomed to sleeping together. " Celes saw how closely they were sleeping together and remarked how the other Papapopamus did the same and were bunched into groups.

    " Maybe they're siblings."

    " Perhaps. In any case they certainly have been together a long time. "

    " A long time huh. Do you think tomorrow will go well? "

    " How do you mean? "

    " I mean, you know, with the task at hand. Do you think we'll be able to handle it. "     she wondered.

    " What do you believe? "     he asked. Celes had the feeling he would.

    " I don't know. I mean, we get along ok I guess, but in a dire situation or life an death one, I'm not too sure. "

    " Recall in the train, we planned out the most efficient way to bring out each others strengths. Ryusuke's suggestions are all very sound. It is no mystery that he is accustomed to such missions and can lead them practically. " While he said this, he lay on top of Magellan with arms open wide. He did this to feel the beast's heavy breathing as the abdomen area would rise and fall.

    " That's true... but still..."

    " Ms. Nadezchka is also very discerning and knowledgeable. Her observation of the fallen tree situation was very impressive. Everyone else seemed to brush aside 'why' the trees fell and simply tried to resolve the situation at hand. Her intellect will surely be of use. "

    " Hmm... I get what you're saying. But I guess I'm still worried. "

    " That is understandable. This one too has worries. Such concern is necessary, but should not be our main focus. "     Celes was a little disappointed. After all the praises that Gensho was giving the group, she thought he would hear something about her from him. Yet, it would seem her reaction was premature. " Ms. Nadezchka and Ryusuke would worry anyone, but you Celes, do not worry this one at all."

    She was not sure whether to feel glad or sad by his words so she kept silent and let him continue. " While you may not have Ryusuke's experience or Nadezchka's intellect, you possess something far more valuable. " In her mind she scrambled to figure out what he meant. " You are Courageous. "

  • The following day, Celes and the others went to the area on the farm that was cut off due to the attacks. The evening before, there was not enough sunlight to make proper observations so it was decided that the investigation would be conducted in the morning and then they would determine how to proceed. Celes armed herself with everything she had in her arsenal given the magnitude of the mission. She observed that Ryusuke did the same as her, but Nadezchka did not seem to bring much in the way of weapons but had a small book with her. Gensho, as usual, wore his cloak and held his staff. They spread out within the area Ryusuke and Celes took to the frontier position by the forest entrance and Nadezchka and Gensho behind them.

    " So, what kind of animal do you think we're dealing with? " Celes asked Ryusuke.

    " This is your country, you tell me. " he responded. " I can think of several animals where I'm from, but I don't know if those animals also live here."

    " I'm no animal expert neither. "

    Meanwhile, Nadezchka was kneeling on the ground looking at foot prints.

    " Those are tracks from Papaopamus. " Gensho replied. " There are many around here. They are all old however. "

    " Yes, but... look at this. " She motioned for Gensho to kneel down as well. When he did, he could see how parts of the grassfield leading to forest were uneven. The grass was not uprooted, but it was as if a large weight had pressed those sections leading to the surrounding grass growing unevenly. " It has to be a Serpentyne. " Nadezchka answered. She called over the rest to share her findings with them.

    " What have you found out? "

    " The creature we are hunting is most likely a Serpentyne, from the Snake family. " she explained.

    " What's your evidence? "

    " Consider that the as we searched this field, we found no evidence of hostilities, animals remains or even blood. A Serpentyne usually kills its prey via strangulation and it is almost certainly strong enough to carry its prey back into the forest. Secondly, there were no other footprints aside from the Papaopamus or Andalusians. Serpentynes, of course not having any limbs for walking, slither as a means of movement. The indent upon this field is consistent with slithering behavior. Finally, Sepentynes have been known to live only in dense forests and have in the past, attacked livestock. " The group took a moment to digest the findings.

    " Well, seems like we're exterminating Serpentynes. " Celes said.

    " As a side note, Serpentynes are solitary hunters, the only group hunting that goes on among them would be a mother as her young. " Nadezchka pointed out.

    " You know what I mean! " she yelled. " So any suggestions on how what we should do now? "




    Destiny System

    Each one comes up with a plan, Celes decided to break the tie, but who's plan does she vote for?

    1. Ryusuke: Head into the Forest and track the beast down before it attacks again.

    2. Nadezchka: Lure the beast into a trap by the entrance.

    3. Gensho: Send a request to the local militia group for assistance.

  • Celes and her companions carefully weighed their options in dealing with the predator. " What if we go in the forest and just kill the damn thing. " Ryusuke demanded.

    " That would be suicidal. Serpentyne's would have the advantage over us. They build their nests inside the forest. It is excellent cover for them against hunters and the thick brush does not impede their movement. I would suggest laying a trap on the outside, here. " Nadezchka suggested. She pointed out the area that it came out of previously and put forward a plan to immobilize the predator then proceeding with the deathblow.

    " Do you believe we should procure any reinforcements, perhaps from the local militia? "     Gensho asked. Ryusuke scoffed at the suggestion.

    " Those cowards did not even come the first time, nothing much has changed, except the prospect of high pay, and I certainly am not going to split my reward with a coward. "

    " A trap sounds good. "     Celes pointed out changing the subject. " We would have the advantage and lure it out on our own terms. "

    " If glasses here says it can move freely even in the dense forest, the open field would make it even more dangerous right? For that matter how would we lure it? "

    " Quite right. "     Nadezchka replied. " And the name is not 'glasses' you ignorant swordsman. " she said angrily. " Okay then, to lure it, we just need large quantity of meat and start cooking it. If the winds favor us, the smell will be irresistible to the Serpentyne. But immobilizing it is tricky. "

    " Leave that to me, I'll work something out. " The swordsman mentioned. They did see Ryusuke equip himself with a larger bag than the others. Celes thought it would have to have been full of tools and equipment rather than clothings and personal affects. " Someone will have to knock it around from moving too much. "

    " This one will volunteer for that job. " Gensho said. The group began to feel confident in their plan of action and they began preparations. Gensho went to see the farmer to ask where the local butcher was located. That would be where they procured their lure from. He was also tasked with obtaining large quantities of rope. Ryusuke took out from his possessions, several dozen knives he called Kunai along with a generous supply of high tensile wire. It was with these tools he would pin down the Serpentyne. Celes did remember the oddity of his weapons and recalled how he was from a different part of the world.

    Ryusuke instructed the women to use the Papaopamous to haul large quantities of logs and boulders, anything heavy. He explained that the heavy materials would be used as anchors to weigh down the beast. His Kunai and skill would easily penetrate deep into the material. The specialize kunai were almost fashioned similar to an arrow, easy to enter and difficult to remove. Nadezchka explained how the rope that Gensho would bring can be made into a net that would drop on the beast's head as it exited the forest.




    Destiny System

    With a working plan in motion, how does the team fair with the initial execution?

    1. Surprise! The beast arrives before Gensho returns with the 'lure'

    2. Not good... The Serpentyne attacks the group before they can setup the Net to distract it.

    3. High Tension. Everything is in place. It's just a waiting game now.

  • Midday. Celes and her companions laid out their plan and all the traps were in place. There was the fear that the beast would randomly attack while they were setting up their traps, but fortune did not permit that to happen. By lunchtime they had already been waiting for several dozen minutes. Celes was perched up in the branches of a tree that was near the entrance of the forest. Her job was to raise the net using a system of pulleys using her weight to pull the net up towards the Serpentyne's head. When she got to the ground she would then assist with the containment. Ryusuke was also by the entrance and would rush the predator's behind and tie it down with the steel wire he had in hand. Nadezchka would provide with extra containment by moving the earth like she did when tumbling the logs that covered the tracks. She was well versed in powerful Artes which was an added bonus. The young woman was using the Caravan as cover. Finally Gensho was in the middle of the field with the lure. He told everyone he was capable of sensing the predator as it approached and would lift his staff in the air to warn them all. There were no details given, so everyone was skeptical and did not let their guard down.

    They were not sure how seriously to take the monk as he appeared to stand in the field with his eyes closed. They wondered whether his perception of the predator was in the form of some Arte or special ability. Suddenly Gensho raised his staff. " It's here! " The others looked around just in case it did not come through the opening but saw nothing. Then Ryusuke heard it. The noise of birds fleeing in the distance. Something terribly fast was moving through the forest dodging the trees and headed straight for them. The sounds became more violent and louder until the swordsman witnessed a moving silhouette

    " Now! NOW!! NOW!!!"     he yelled. Celes dropped to the ground from 10 meters in the air using the rope and raising the net. Before she could touch the ground, the Serpentyne, rushed the net, not even slowing once it got caught. Celes was immediately thrown upward by the whiplash from the pulley system. " It's fast! " Ryusuke had to work quickly before the trap would be rendered ineffective.

    " It can't be. "     Nadezchka said motionless as she saw the Serpentyne emerge. " Elegos help us, this predator is... monstrous.." she said quivering at the sight of it. By her estimates it was two to three times larger than average. " Gensho get out of there! " she yelled. Opening her book she chanted as quick as she could to summon a wall of earth.

    Gensho meanwhile was on the move even before being warned. The steel wires were entangling with the net as Ryusuke started pining down the Kunai in their various places, but it was not stopping at all, merely slowing it down. The large logs and boulders were being dragged along by the sheer power of the monster. The Serpentyne had rapidly reached the rotting carcass of meat and in a single swoop gobbled it all. As it did, Nadezchka summoned earth partitions to corner the beast before delivering the deathblow from above. Ryusuke scaled the walls and jumped high to use gravity to wedge his blade into the head. To make sure nothing went awry, he infused an Arte into his blade giving it a fiery glow that would cut down the strongest steel armors like it was paper.




    Destiny System

    They underestimated their chances against such an overwhelming foe. This is the beginning of disaster unless something can be done.

    1. Deflected. Ryusuke's blade does not pierce through even when powered up.

    2. Slashed. The Serpentyne tries to hack Nadezchka in two.

    3. Yummy. The Serpentyne breaks through the Earth Walls and gobbles up Gensho.

  • Ryusuke's Blade bears down on the beast but the monstrous creature's dorsal plating was thicker than expected. The flames of his arte did not have any effect to add to its destructive power. It was as if the Serpentyne was immune to Fire itself. The swordsman had a difficult time pulling his weapon from the embedded plates. " Dammit I'm stuck!" he yelled as he braced himself for the jostling and jolting of the head. The sheer size of the beast could not be contained by the fortified earth walls and they soon became rubble under the weight of its body being tossed around. The Serpentyne's tail, which took the form of a spike with a razor edge, twisted around in the air, until finally it found a target in Nadezchka. " Get out of the way!" Ryusuke shouted.

    The young woman hid behind the caravan but they both knew the creatures large spike tail would tear the specialized wood to pieces with sheer force alone. It was then that the weaponized appendage struck an energy barrier, deflecting the attack away from Nadezchka and the Caravan. At this time Ryusuke had pulled the sword away and placed a little distance between him and the Serpentyne. Nadezchka could not believe what she saw. She was saved by a powerful form of defensive arte, and the user was the Monk. Gensho had somehow sensed the monsters attack and rushed to her side before summoning his ' Light Wave Barrier ' arte. " Stand behind this one please. " he asked her.

    While this was happening, Celes was awaking from her unconscious state. She noticed ahead of her that the group was engaged with the Serpentyne and after verifying that she was mostly all right, she rejoined them as fast as she could. From what she saw, she gathered that the traps were all defeated and that know it was a simple matter of survival, to kill it or be killed.




    Destiny System

    Celes is ready to join the fight. What directions is she given as she returns to the battle?

    1. Ryusuke. He commands that she draw its attention so that he can attempt an attack in the back with the others as backup.

    2. Gensho. Says to regroup near him. He can protect everyone as long as he is close to them.

    3. Celes takes matters into her own hands and show them what she is capable of.

  • Celes' face had a look of defeat in it. The massive Sepentyne tore through the battlefield relentlessly, as her companions did what they could to protect themselves. The pace at which she drew closer started to slow as she felt hesitation to join. Everything inside her was letting her know how hopeless the situation is and that she would be better off running away. Her hands were placed on her sword and sheath but she did not draw the blade. The young woman knew how powerless she was in this situation and she certainly showed it through her countenance.

    " Celes! " shouted Gensho. That sudden outburst managed to snap her back into reality and out of her self-pitying thoughts. " Celes, do not stay out in the open! Come here! " he continued. Celes followed Gensho's instruction. The monk had also called Ryusuke to where he already stood with Nadezchka. Ryusuke drew its attention so that Celes could rejoin first. After dodging a headlong attack by the Serpentyne he jumped to Gensho's position. Barely making it, Gensho recalled the Light Wave Barrier before the spiked tail could slash them in half. The monster became fixated on the group and continued to attack even as the shield protected everyone.

    " Gensho, you can't raise the barrier forever. What are you thinking?! "     Celes questioned.

    " That is true. "     he said under strain. " That is why we must formulate a plan. "

    " Artes seem to do nothing against it. " Ryusuke mentioned.

    " No." Nadezchka said. " It could be that the Serpentynes are resistant to fire elementals. "

    " If that's true let's hit it with whatever we have left. "     Celes suggested.

    " It's carapace is quite sturdy. "     Nadezchka explained. " Even using other elementals would cut the effectiveness of our attacks. "

    " Aim for the underbelly then! "     Ryusuke affirmed. " I'll draw it's attention away from you guys. Assault when you get the chance. Can I pass through without you dispelling? " Gensho nodded to let Ryusuke know that he could get through but once outside he could not return unless the shield collapsed. Ryusuke readied himself with sword in hand and jolted outside the barrier. As expected the Serpentyne went racing towards him. Nadezchka stood herself apart to cast an incantation for her next arte.

    Celes was unsure what she could do as no one instructed her not to mention she was only capable of using a fire elemental arte. " Celes. " Gensho called to her. " Stay with this one and protect Nadezchka. "



    Destiny System

    Celes thought she was ready, but the grim reality of her powerlessness has sunk in and she is wavering in her resolve, how does she answer Gensho?

    1. Run Away. She feels her presence is only a liability and tries leaves.

    2. Give Excuses. Her determination wavers in the sight of great danger.

    3. Silence. She feels that anything she says is the wrong answer, a sign of a shattered confidence

  • .... perhaps he knows that I cant do anything which is why he asks that I stay close....

    Celes did as Gensho suggested but did not utter a word in doing so. Gensho sensed that she was distressed over the situation. In truth, many individuals would feel the same as she did and Gensho acknowledged that. While Ryusuke kept the attention of the Serpentyne placed squarely on him, the monk took a minute to reassure his companion. " Celes, you look distraught. " he said without looking in her direction. Celes continued her silence. " Do you believe we will fail? " he asked. Ryusuke turned back towards them and Nadezchka was ready. Raising her free arm in the air she conjured several large pillars of ice with speared tips.

    .... fail... we already failed didn't we? the trap was a failure, our assessment was a failure... our attack are failing...

    " Do you believe we cannot prevail? "     Gensho asked further. Still, she continued her silence, hesitant to even draw her weapon. As Nadezchka launched her attack, Ryusuke doubled back jumping behind the Serpentyne beast and narrowly avoiding its fangs as it clashed with his blade. The monster saw what was coming and curled its head into its underbelly exposing only the hardshelled carapace to Nadezchka's Arte.

    ... prevail dammit?! how can we, this is a giant serpentyne that not even the local militia dared to encounter, what can the four of us do?!.......

    In the background, the Serpentyne had a few ice spears lodged into its hide slowing its movement, but the damage was still minimal. It was then that the monster creature raised its head in the air and spat out a burst of fire. Continuing its loud hissing the field started to be littered with patches of flames. " What on Elegos..."

    " It's not supposed to do that... "     Nadezchka whispered. As far as she was concerned, Serpentyne's have never been recorded as breathing flames.

    " Do you believe we will die? "

    " Enough! " she yelled. " Why!? Why the questions?! I can't take it! " she responded in tears. " There is nothing I can do to help! There! I said it! " Nadezchka heard her yelling and tried not to notice. Now was not the time for sentimental outbursts but Gensho's seemingly innappropriate interrogation caused Celes to collapsed.

    The monk walked up to Celes who was on her knees trying to shake off her fears. " These feelings are understandable, Celes. " he started. " Do not forget that you are not alone. Alone, we cannot cover over our weaknesses. Our weaknesses find refuge in the strengths of our companions. " Placing his hand on her shoulder showed Celes how confident and reassuring Gensho was. " That is why, even in this situation, believing in your companions is more than enough of a contribution. " He then took her hand and placed a small spherical object in her palm. " If you believe, put that faith into this jewel, and your faith shall reward you with protection. "

    Celes now felt slightly better. She could stop looking down and answer her companion face to face, but as she did, she saw the Serpentyne spitting a large burst of flames towards her and Gensho. Before she could speak or act, Gensho had somehow sensed what was going on. He rapidly placed his hand on her abdomen and a burst of wind gently pushed her several meters backward away from him.     With words of wisdom from her friend, Celes became less anxious. But now that he has been struck with a seemingly fatal attack what happens next?

    1. Rage. Celes goes on a blind rampage unable to stop herself.

    2. Follow-up. The Serpentyne does not letup its attack and tries to cleave Celes in half.

    3. Stand together. Nadezchka and Ryusuke Arrive to defend Celes and keep the beast at bay.

  • Celes was filled with disbelief. Her companion, arguably the one whom she had gotten to know the best and the one she had the most faith in was smoldering inside a patch of inferno before her eyes. With her eyes still filled with tears from before, she instinctively drew her sword wanting to do something about the situation but hesitated to move forward. The Serpentyne paused, seemingly satisfied with what had occured, then began its assault against Celes. Ryusuke and Nadezchka had noticed its movements. Ryusuke had already been trying to catch up to it while Nadezchka was poised to deliver another arte assault on it. The monstrous creature elegantly swiveled around the fire patches it had laid down.

    With its attention fixated now on Celes, it moved in to strike her with its spiked tail. The lone swordsman managed to get in front of her and forcibly parried the blow landing its spike into the ground. " Hey! Snap out of it! " Ryusuke commanded.

    Nadezchka positioned herself to its side as close as was permitted and launched another wave of ice pillars. " Celes! " she yelled catching up. Her attack knocked the beast to the ground and this time stayed laid down for a bit. " This creature will not retreat no matter how much we attack, it is hardly typical behavior. " she analyzed. " Even with minor injuries creatures will not persist in their hunt for food. " More and more smoke began to rise.

    " On that we agree. "     He replied. " Time to end this now. " Ryusuke rushed in to end the creatures life but as he did, he noticed something rush through the smoke and fire. It was the Serpentyne's tail thrusting forward towards Nadezchka and Celes. He knew it was too late for him to turn back to do anything. The women did not realize until it seemed too late. The two huddled together prepared to meet their fate when Celes remembered the object Gensho had given her. Grasping it firmly in her fist she thrust out her hand against the spiked tail putting her faith in Gensho's word.

    At that, she felt a drain on her body like nothing before as if the object was taking energy from her life and storing it. The pearl like object shone with great intensity and a large stream of water manifested itself. The water took on the form similar to that of a dragonic species head figure putting a halt to the tails advance and drenching most of the battle area including where Gensho last stood. The steam and smoke mixed together and Celes, relieved, noticed a shadowy figure.




    Destiny System

    Gensho is found alive after Celes flooded the battlefield with water. The end draws near, who delivers the final blow?

    1. Ryusuke finishes what he started.

    2. Gensho gets his revenge

    3. Nadezchka aims for the third and final blow.

  • .......it can't be............

    In the midst of the steam and smoke the white haired monk stood up from his kneeling position. Celes and the others could see his cloak was tattered, scorched from the fiery spit of the Serpentyne but his clothing underneath appeared untouched. Celes and Nadezchka looked on with disbelief, for they were certain their eyes did not deceive them. Ryusuke pressed on after he had passed the Serpentyne and after enabling his blade with a more powerful arte, he was able to slash tail apendage cleanly and effortlessly. Yet, even such a grave wound did not slow down the monster one bit. Celes and the others scattered about trying to find another opening.

    Celes approached Gensho when she got the chance. Even still, she was cautious, not believing anyone could survive such a close encounter with a fiery attack. Seeing her caution Gensho took notice of her. " Thank you, Celes " he said as he tore the torn and scorched cloak off. " You believed and in doing so, saved this one. " His voice resonated within her, her hearing and her sight could not have been compromised as she had thought.

    " Gensho....I'm glad you're okay. "     it was a response she instinctively came to. But as if to repeat the events of moments ago, the Serpentyne rapidly drew against the two looking to finish them both. This time the monk was prepared. With his left hand, Celes saw him draw a sword, something she did not notice while he was cloaked. Grasping the weapon with both hands a powerful force exuded from him, something the young woman had never felt before. Lifting his arms and the blade over his head, Gensho stepped forward and the force she felt was projected towards the monster. The Sword had manifested a flood of water, exactly as Celes had done with Gensho's sphere only much more powerful and massive in scale. Whereas the attack of Celes had only one dragonic figurehead, Gensho's demonstrated a total of nine figureheads.

    Ryusuke and Nadezchka hurriedly move out of the way of the wave of water. The liquids amount looked as if it could drown the Serpentyne and it envelopped it completely at one point. After being pushed several meters away from the group, the waters receded and the out of control beast lay on the field without much life, though it was still alive.





    Destiny System

    The battle has ended, and Celes and her companions were surprisingly victorious.

    1. Try and finish off the beast? It is still alive.

    2. Nadezchka and Ryusuke become increasingly suspicious of Gensho and treat him as a threat to Celes' surprise.

    3. Celes confronts Gensho how he was able to survive

  • " It's still alive. " Ryusuke said as the two men stood before the serpentyne's head. Ryusuke, with sword in hand he intended to stab it deep into the beast brain delivering the final blow until Gensho used his Staff to parry the blow. " Depending on your answer, you'll have more to worry about than just this monster. " he responded.

    " Must you treat it as if it were your enemy? "     Gensho replied looking into the eyes of the beast. " You are right, it is alive, yet it is also dying. " The swordsman struck Gensho's staff as a show of retaliation. " Can you not see? Its lifeforce is waning. The waters that struck its body were imbued with the power to drain its Spirit Energy. "

    " What's going on you two? "     Nadezchka asked. Both her and Celes approached from their distant position realizing that there was no longer any danger that the beast posed the group. Celes could tell some sort of argument was going on between the two. She felt certain that Nadezchka shared her thoughts, and intervened before anything escalated. " Let's all calm down, tensions can run high after such life threatening experiences, can't they Celes." The young woman nodded to Nadezchka's point.

    " ' Peace and Eternal Rest, and let the light of the Divine shine upon you. ' "     Gensho uttered quietly. It was then that the Serpentyne's eyes rolled behind its head and the lids closed them to the light. At that moment, everyone was certain that the beast had died. Celes observed him performing some kind of gesture with his hands, almost like a prayer for the beast. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was the first time she had seen his outer garments. They were always carefully hidden under his cloak and one would only gather a few glimpses. However now with the cloak burnt away, his clothing was clear to see, and it somewhat puzzled her. It was nothing she had ever seen before and could not pinpoint exactly where it would come from. There were no distinct markings or symbols neither. Certainly she thought it to be a ceremonial or religious type of garment but if that were fact, it was knowledge that eluded her.

  • In the aftermath of the struggle with the Serpentyne, the group wondered what their next move should be. Nadezchka asked the others if she could have a little time with the corpse to make some observations, no doubt in order to satisfy her intellectual curiosity about the beast. Ryusuke decided to go and inform the farmer Mr. Fraser about their success and discuss with him the removal of the animals dead body. Gensho said he would be resting inside the caravan as the strain of using so much Spirit Energy to power his Artes was catching up to him. Celes, was unsure what she should do, and so found a nice spot in the middle of the farmers field to sit around and wait as time passed by.

    Around dinner time, the farmer and his wife had invited the group to dine with them once again. They all accepted aside from Gensho who was apparently still sleeping in the Caravan. " We'll be leaving in the morning just to let you know. " Ryusuke announced. He thanked the Fraser's for their hospitality and said they would need to depart in the morning if they were to catch the train back to Port City Victoria. Nadezchka and Celes agreed.

    " You got those tickets fast. "     Celes remarked.

    " Don't want that Requestor fella to skip town while we accomplished his task. "

    " True. "     she said. The prospect of that large amount of money was certainly appealing to all. The sooner they claimed it the better, is what they believed. Late in the evening, Ryusuke and Nadezchka decided to sleep in the house as offered by the farmer as a token of thanks. Celes was to join them but she wanted to bring a few affects and a change of clothes from her belongings inside the Caravan. When she entered, she located what she needed but realized that Gensho was nowhere to be found. She looked thoroughly before heading outside, where she scanned the vicinity to no avail.

    " Are you looking for this one? "     a familiar voice said. There was no mistaking that odd way of speech, Gensho was nearby. Celes walked around the Caravan but saw no one. " Up here. " he finally revealed. Celes looked upward to find Gensho sitting atop the caravan's roof.

    " What are you doing up there? "

    " This one was enjoying the twinkling of the night sky until sounds of rustling inside the caravan began. "

    " I was just getting my stuff, the farmer invited us to sleep in his house. "

    " How generous! " he noted. " This one will have to apologize to him before leaving for not accepting the offer, but the stars are so inviting tonight. " Gensho's manner of speech was somewhat archaic or at least to her very flowery. She started to move away, thinking she did not want to get caught up in another conversation like the first night they met. Not after showing how useless she proved herself to be in the face of the situation at hand. However, at the last moment, she dropped her things by the side fo the caravan and climbed up towards Gensho. " Please have a seat. " he said excitedly.

    Celes moved closer as she saw his garments shine in the glow of the moonlight. He wore a green tunic, that had several belt straps located around the torso and forewarms, basic grey combat pants, brown gloves and boots. He also had a lilac colored scarf even though it was still summer. The most interesting piece however, was the large sash that went over his left arm and covered parts of the right thigh. The sash was a brilliant and vibrant mauve with patterns of autumn colored leaves and looked extremely well detailed and expensive. " Gensho where are you from? " she asked, reminiscing to a few days earlier.

    " You are curious about these garments, yes? "     Celes nodded. " In a way, you not knowing is for the best. Because that knowledge comes at a price. "

    " Give it up, monk, one way or another I will find out. Might as well save me the trouble. "

    " Ahh yes, Monk. Many have referred to this one as such in the past. It is a very similar role. Perhaps it is the garments that misinform people. "

    " Just by looking at those garments, I can tell you are not from the North or the Western Empire, or their factions, possibly from the Eastern Union or Southern Republics, just cause I know nothing about the south. "

    " You are determined to know the truth about this one, but another truth hinders the way. "

    " Which is what ?"

    " That in a few days time, we shall part ways. " Gensho was right. The adventure, intense as it was, was still shortlived like a firework display. There was no need for them to develop their relationships any further than what they already had. In the back of her mind she realized that Ryusuke and Nadezchka acted in such a way that this was true. Gensho could see her disheartened face when he mentioned to her they would be leaving each other. " Even if that truth is revealed, it just a key that opens the door to a room full of 10 more doors. "

    " Damn you and your riddles. I just want to know who you really are." she said though she did understand what he meant. The young woman was unable to hide her sadness that this whole time together would soon be over. In some strange way, she had become attached to these people, and the thought of no more adventures together was heartbreaking. If anything, she wanted a tangible piece of information that she would be able to carry with her to future adventures. She desired a single 'truth' to make sure the memory of this time stayed within herself.

    " This one is Gensho."     he replied sincerely. " A Believer of the Way. "

  • The words that came out of Gensho sounded unbelievable to her. It was her first time meeting a Believer of the Way. Wayists, as they are commonly known and called, were uncommon within the Kingdoms of the North. Centuries old decrees prevented anyone associated with this group to enter Kingdom Territories. As time went on, and the progression of sea and sky fairing vessels grew, different places of the world became more hospitable for international visitors. She read that even though there was no special enforcement of outright bans against Wayists or other groups, because of the long held stance the Kingdoms have had in the past, many did not feel welcome beyond cities such Port City Victoria which were international hubs.

    " Gensho, I'd like to know more about your personal mission. "     she asked on a whim. She took a while to ponder his response about being a wayist, but did not want to show how concerned she was about it. Being a Kingdom Chronicler, she was privy to information that would normally not be known to the average citizen of the Kingdom. She remembered reading how generations before her time, the prejudice against foreigners was incredibly volatile. Hate through speech and actions was commonplace. Given the history of her country and continent, it was not without merit, however she did feel her own prejudice creep up against this person. The very same person who had been the most open and encouraging. The same individual who single-handedly turned the tide of their battle against the Serpentyne creature.

    " My apologies, Celes. It would not be appropriate at this time.     " Gensho responded.

    " Okay fine. "     she replied. " Did you wear that long cloak in the heat of summer to cover your clothes? " Gensho responded with a simple yes. " Are you... afraid of what others might think if a Wayist were to be found among them? " Gensho was taken aback slightly that Celes knew the term Wayist.

    " Rather than fear, it would be a consideration towards those around this one. We all have aspects about us that may make others unwilling to accept us. People always wish to be seen for who they are and accepted as such despite our differences of opnions, thoughts and actions. Not revealing that this one is a Wayist was certainly for our groups safety."

    " You sure it wasn't for your own? "

    " No one wishes to be hurt do they?"     he asked, to which Celes rolled her eyes realizing again that Gensho answered a question with another question.

    " Well, that's the thing. Whatever reason you are here for, you are putting yourself in danger for it aren't you? "

    " That is correct. "

    " Why?"     she pressed. " For a 'friend in need'? Sounds like a hell of a lot for a friend. "

    " Indeed. " he responded. "Friendship must risk the danger, otherwise it is not friendship at all. " Those words struck at her hard. Her employment, though well paying and exciting, did not afford time for deep intimate relationships of any kind. Certainly not on the level of what Gensho deemed to be called friendship. The young woman found herself even more envious of Gensho's friend than the first time they spoke about this.
