Title: Outset Port
Location: Port City Victoria, Kingdom of Welwyn
Date: Eclasen 3rd 997 C.Y.A.D. 8am

" The Outset of Ones Journey is only memorable when one does not reach their destination. "
- WayMaster Tie Sha

In the bustling Port City of Victoria a cloaked figure appeared off a boat and made way through the crowd. It was midday and the clouds were starting to come in from the inlet. The roads were glazed with a light snowfall from the previous night. Walking into the heart of the town the person found a local bar and Inn named Travelers Crossroads. Walking into it the individual was greeted with many persons enjoying themselves over good lunch and some drinks. People from all parts of Elegos seemed to be gathered here. Walking up to the bar attendant the hooded person asked for a drink of water and permission to post a request on the job listings board near the entrance. The barman obliged and the stranger took the water and seated somewhere away from the excitement. After a sip of the cool refreshing water the person made their way to the board to post their request.

A few minutes passed by and the person returned to the bar asking to reserve a room at the inn for until the end of the week. The cloaked individual then retired to the room. The paper upon which the add was printed read:" Anyone who is interested in this quest please meet back here at Travelers Crossroads and gather at the table on the north east end of the bar for more information and a meeting with the one who requested this. Please gather here by Eclasen 3rd when the sky darkens "

  • All day long, adventurers of all sorts entered and exited the Travelers Crossroads, and while many did notice the very ambiguous quest requiring anyone interested to return at night time, very few took interest. Of those few, was one young woman name Celes Klarth. She needed a new report to send to the Kingdom Herald Society for publishing. Her current angle was no different than many of her peers; accompany a guild or group of adventurers and chronicle their actions for a good story. Sometimes it was done with their permission, and other times she chased away for her covert harassment.

Today, it was the same story. She would have until the end of the month to come up with a good piece for publishing. Some chroniclers will join several adventures in a single month and report on that. That was not Celes' style however. She would purposefully look at requests and try to gauge which ones would take a few weeks if not the month. She was resolved to see what kind of request it would be for it to be this ambiguous.

' It's almost about time... the sun is low on the horizon and most people are probably eating. '
she thought as she made her way back to the Travelers Crossroads.

The rowdiness and noise were apparent even from the outside. She opened the door and proceed in, but moved away from the meeting location so as not to give herself away. Celes walked over to the Request Board once more and reviewed its contents, however she was positioned in such a way that she could easily inspect those that were already seated by the corner. There were three individuals there, but no clear distinction as to who the Requestor was. All three seemed to quietly wait and were not talking. She guessed perhaps that the requestor was not present yet. Walking around the Board, she made her way to the table. The closer she got the more she could make clearer observations.

' That guy on the Left... mid-twenties maybe. Wearing some sort of cloth covering her forehead. Westerners where those I think... come to think of it so do some Easterners. Definitely not from the North, his complexion and clothing sort of give it away. Such long hair and dark too. Although sitting down, he's got his sword in left hand. His eyes are closed, must be pretty confident swordsman.'

' Her on the Right...Wow... such a pretty face but not childish at all, very mature, especially with those glasses. Fair skin.. ugh... even though I am positively younger. Her hair is nicely kept and accurately cut. She's definitely a Northerner but I can't pinpoint from where. That book she's reading, a scholar perhaps? She is turning those pages quite quickly.'

' Hmmm, the center person is definitely a guy from the body type and clothing but, he's wearing a long cloak even though its just the end of summer. Can't really...seee... his face... hmmmmm well he's got white hair which is unheard of. Maybe albino? well I would say he's not from here either. I don't even recognize that pole thing his arm is wrapped around. Can't be a spear, there's no piercing piece, too fancy for a walking stick, it's freaking gold colored. '

  • After making a few quick observations about the people gathered at the table, she drifted to her left as she walked. She had decided to greet the Dark haired swordsman. Out of all of them he piqued her interest the most, but she had curious thoughts regarding all of them. She noticed that there was no seat placed near him, so she took a chair from another table and placed it between the two men. Hopefully by greeting the swordsman first, the others would naturally introduce themselves. As she noticed earlier, everyone kept to themselves it seemed. She sat down, started looking at her right to get a good look at the man with white hair and turned her head slowly to make eye contact with everyone, until finally her gaze was upon the swordsman.

" Hi there! My name's Celes."
she said. As her attention seemed focused on the swordsman, the other two did not wish to interrupt. The Dark hair man simply looked at her before his eyes moved off.

' Not even a nod?! who does he think he is?!'
she thought as the swordsman shrugged her off without any recognition.

" Are you here about the request as well? "
she asked. She was determined to persevere as his attitude was found to be a bit rude in her eyes. The woman across from her pulled her book slightly upward to hide her expression but she was intent on listening further. The man to her right was smiling slightly though not to her knowledge.

The question drew the swordsman's attention back to her but she noticed there was slight annoyance in his eyes. " Why ask a question to which you already know the answer?. " the man responded curtly before looking elsewhere. Still the others did not even speak a word. What he said was true. Celes knew from the contents of the request letter that interested persons should assemble in this area. He saw through her intent and it frustrated her. One of the inn's staff came by to hand out water to everyone and said that dinner would start soon. She gathered that someone had already ordered for the group. She wondered whether to stop bothering him and move on the others as the Requestor was still nowhere in sight.

  • To avoid further frustration in her short time dealing with the dark haired man, it was prudent for her to engage with someone else before either the food or the requestor shows up. Moving her attention away from her left she looked again at the beautiful woman across from her, still holding up her book. As their eyes met Celes saw her gaze broke off, or rather hidden behind the pages of her book. Although a little girly chit-chat would have been best and easiest she now turned her attention towards the white haired man. Upon closer inspection, the gentleman was wearing a robe-style cloak, similar to those worn by monks of the Holyland Alliance but had no colors, symbols or patterns of any kind.

' so much for albino '
she thought when she realized that his skin was slightly tanned compared to his white hair. To her astonishment his eyes were shinier than his golden rod, something that belies his gentle smile. The eyes looked like they had some kind of magic in them. ' So we got unfriendly over there, ms, quiet from across, and mr. enigma. no wonder there was no talking go around. '

" My apologies Ms, this one was not aware that it is customary in the North to stare intensely at a person for a long period of time. " the man responded. Celes was taken completely aback. Becoming ensnared by this persons many oddities left her unaware of her own rudeness. Her suspicions about being a foreigner were confirmed at least. " We were told that the Requestor has paid for a full course meal for all interested persons regarding the Request. " he mentioned.

Celes was grateful someone was willing to interact with her like a normal person. " I've been out all day and haven't eaten anything since this morning. Sounds like I choose the request to join. Still pretty ambiguous, no details of any kind, no prize money incentive, no destinations. So many questions will need answering."

" We can deduce that a fully paid full course meal presented to undetermined candidates of this request highly indicates that our Requestor is someone of substantial monetary backing."
explained the woman across from her.

" No details, and big money more than likely means a dangerous mission, probably risking our lives. I doesn't make sense to not write details unless it was something dangerous, could scare off any takers. "
the swordsman added. Everyone was now engaged into conversation however it still felt as if they were not speaking to each other, but thinking out loud and their thoughts simply agreeing.

  • It was only now that Celes realized that perhaps the ' Monk ' incited the conversation by means of giving the rest of them information which seems none of them knew; the requestor had paid for a full course meal. He was probably the best person to get any other information from her standpoint. Before she could say anything else, three waiters came by, both hands full of large platters of food for them. Their small table was quickly filled with hardly any space for their drinks. Celes was awfully hungry and her hunger took precedence. " I.... guess we should eat.?" she suggested.

The others agreed in their own way. The ' Bookworm ' placed her reading material to her side and propped herself up which Celes thought was very refined and lady like. She took a small plate, carefully selected a few foods and gently and neatly placed them on her plate. It looked like she was fairly excited to eat now. The 'Swordsman' just sipped his drink as if he was in no hurry to eat. He acted suspicious towards the foods eyeing each of them carefully before partaking of any. Lastly the ' monk' performed something along the lines of a religious gesture of thanksgiving before he too began eating. Not to be singled out, Celes sliced off some bread and served herself some stew.

She took notice of a bottle that probably contained some form of alcohol. As she poured herself something to drink she saw the liquids glistening redness; wine. She offered some to the 'monk'. " Thank you, Ms. Celes this one is grateful. There is nothing like wine on occasions of celebration. " he remarked.

" My pleasure, and Celes, is just fine. "
she replied. " Rather I'm just not used to being called miss. Umm, I'm sorry what was your name? "

" This one is called Gensho. "
he said cheerfully. The 'Monks' sincerity and cheerfulness was not what she expected. Her opinions of monks came from the Holyland Alliance Church, to which this person definitely did not belong too. Monks of that order were stoic and quiet.

  • ' There it is again.. How bizarre... Gensho refers to himself in the third person.'
she thought. Celes was delighted that she was able to at least one persons name from the table. She had been giving everyone nicknames to distinguish them in her mind, but a persons name was essentially the best way to form a relationship any kind. The ' monk' Gensho was fairly open to conversation and revealing aspects about himself so she decided to further pursue conversation with him as the other two concentrated on their food.

" So Gensho, tell me, are you one of the Holy Alliance? "
she asked directly. Unbeknownst to her, the other two were also paying attention to what Gensho would answer. They too were interested perhaps because they were trying to seize each other up as much as possible. Gensho was unfazed by her directness. He put down the cup he was drinking from and answered. " Are you curious about the Holyland Alliance Church? " he responded.

' Figures, he does look like the type to answer a question with one of his own. '

" Not really, you just look like a monk of the church is all. "
Celes was not knowledgeable about the Church as they were not the mainstream belief in this region of the North, nor was she interested in learning anything about them.

" Your question, you mentioned the 'Holy Alliance' specifically, therefore either you are interested in the organization, or the question is purely based on observations and presumptions. "
answered the young woman. " Surely you have observed the lack of decor on his clothing, which indicates he cannot be a part of the Holyland Alliance. However the most evident proof is that Staff..." she added. Celes was intrigue by her knowledge but annoyed she dared enter her conversation with Gensho when she has not even given her name yet.

" So, where are you from stranger? "
    asked the dark swordsman.

' one after another with you guys.... damn. '
Celes realized the other two were also in the dark when it came to Gensho. All three had some curious confrontation to be had with the monk. Gensho, still unfazed, gave them a smile as if to welcome the inquiry.

" Nadezchka is correct, Celes. This one is not of the Holyland Alliance Church. "
he replied. Celes committed to memory that name Gensho gave away. She did not know what to make of his response. Somehow Gensho knew about Nadezchka, however her expression did not look surprised at all. " My place of birth is the East. "

  • " You really had to nick-pick my question that badly? Yeah, I saw the same things. "
Celes did not enjoy having her words analyzed so precisely. She was convinced aside from Gensho that this Nadezchka person was an oddity as well. " I'm sorry, I don't think I got your name? "

    " You didn't. "
Nadezchka responded with what Celes interpreted as a fake smile. She looked straight at her. " Nadezchka Kislelyak. Scholar. " When she revealed herself to be a scholar, Celes was not taken by surprise. She believed someone constantly with a book in hand must have a career like that.

When Gensho gave away Nadezchka's name her attention was focused on the new information. Unlike Celes, Nadezchka realized that Gensho's response was measured. He denied being a part of the Holyland Alliance and confirmed their suspicions about being from the East, but that was all. In her eyes someone of his joviality would be more forthcoming about who he is and what he does. " Do not refer to me so casually, please. We only just met. "

" My apologies again, this one thought it would be a good idea to get to know each other better. "

    " Why? "

" He believes we're going to be a team working together on this request. "
the swordsman said. " Although it's not even mentioned on the request that this will be a group effort. "

" True, yet nothing indicates otherwise as well. "
Gensho responded. " This one would rather believe that it will be working together. "

" Coordinating our efforts would increase our chances of success in a single endeavor. "
Celes was agreeing with the thought of working together. She saw that the only one opposed to the idea was probably the unknown swordsman. She then thought of something to pay back his rudeness.

    " Yeah, teamwork. "
she said while stabbing a meatball with her fork. Pointing it towards the swordsman: " Besides, you said it's probably a dangerous mission. Wouldn't it be better to face it with other people rather than alone?" The swordsman's unfazing stare turned slightly into a glare. Celes knew that questioning any warriors competence in combat was something that would definitely agitate them.

While they conversed, the Requestor approached the table until they all took notice of a person cloaked in a dark robe, with the face completely shrouded in shadow. The sight of the person was truly ominous looking. The only visible part that confirmed he was at least human were the hands. " The Request is for all of you to fulfill, should you choose to accept it. " the Requestor said using a male voice.

  • ' I cannot see his face at all. Is this some sort of magic? Maybe he doesn't want us to know his true identity. But that just makes me even more curious dammit...'

All four shuffled their seating positions so that the Requestor could join them and so that they were all facing him. At least he confirmed what most of them were thinking, about working together. The swordsmans face remained unchanged, while Gensho's appeared serious when confronted with the Requestor, and Nadezchka's look a little frightened. As she mentioned before, there were so many questions to be asked, but before she could ask them herself someone else spoke up.

" How much are we going to get paid? "
    the swordsman asked directly.

' Really, out of all the things... well I guess it can't be helped this guy is a mercenary and they're only in it for the money. But then again that's what anyone who undertakes a request has a motivation. '

    " Ten Thousand Diamars. "
    the Requestor answered.

' That's nuts! Even divided by four, that's more income than I make in three months on average. '
The others were just as surprised as Celes was. The amount of money offered was not something one would hear every day unless this was a bounty issued by the Kingdom Affairs Office. Normal prize money consisted of One maybe Two thousand diamars at most.

" Your best chance of success is for me to take this job alone. The others would get in the way. "
replied the swordsman. The others including Celes reacted strongly from the swordsmans words.

' This jerk has some nerve. '

  • " Hey! Where do you get off saying such things? You don't know me, so you got no right to speak for me. " Celes, in a single burst of anger let out her frustration towards the unknown mercenary. At every turn she was being looked down upon by this person and she ran out of patience with his last remarks. The Requestor remained as is but one would not be able to detect any change in mood, impression or expression from that person. Gensho and Nadezchka looked on in worry for the young woman.

" You may carry a weapon, but you're no fighter little girl. "
he made mention of her weapon strapped to her waist. " That fancy sword of yours looks like it's never been used. Why don't you go home and polish it some more. " At that Celes got up hurriedly her hand readied at her blade.

" Why don't you take that sword out you presumptuous prick and actually do some work for a change? "
The insults escalated to the point where fighting would inevitably breakout.

  • Celes stood as she openly challenged the unknown swordsman looking down on him and his attitude with contempt. His gaze slowly drifted upward to meet hers. His already unfriendly eyes became filled with anger as he himself got up and marched towards the exit. Celes followed suit right behind him. Nadeshka and Gensho both looked to the Requestor to see if he would put an end to this childish behavior, but his response was far from it. " At least they decided to go outside. " he remarked before leaving himself with the other two tailing him.

Behind the tavern was a wide alley that was clear of people. If they did this in the open and someone ratted them out to the local authorities, everyone involved would be placed into the city stockade as punishment. " This is a contest of skill, experience and training. No need for a death match. Whosoever draws first blood wins. In the interest of all involved, Mana will also be prohibited for obvious reasons. To ensure fairness, this one will preside over the match as arbiter. " Gensho said. The requestor and Nadezchka stood back a bit to allow for more room for the duelists.

After examining the Unknown's status, Gensho approached Celes to do the same. " Celes, while we may not approve of his ways, he is still a well trained warrior. His confidence may be well founded."

" Are you saying I should quit now? "

" This one is in no position to make decisions for you. "

    " Good! "
she told him. Gensho positioned himself between them. With weapon in hand the unknown swordsman did not even prepare battle stance. He did not view his opponent as someone of his equal his weapon was a slightly curved single edge blade made with some unknown metal. Celes pulled her sword out and grasped it with both hands. It was a single edge blade that looked like it was made of glass.

    " Corbanite Crystal. "
    Nadezchka said.

" Ah! So you are aware of her weapons material as well. "

" Yes. An Artisan material, not specifically meant for combat, however collectors and other specialists have used them before. Of note is the First Paladin, Lucinda Odell. "

  • Gensho yelled out the signal to start and promptly backed away. Even so, neither side moved an inch but both stared into each others eyes trying to read each others movements. It was obvious that one party did not take this too seriously while the other was quite weary. Celes did her best to take into account the surroundings beforehand to see if she could use it to her advantage. A small breeze made her hair streak across her face for a few seconds but she did not take her eyes off of her opponent. Whether the use of Mana was to her advantage or the opposite was unclear, but she understood that her skills with a blade were inadequate. It was plainly obvious to her opponent as well, but she felt being underestimated can be used to her advantage.

" It's been a few minutes at least and they barely moved. "
    Nadezchka noticed.

" It can be said that in a duel, combat takes place mostly in one's mind. The actual fight may last only a few moves. " Gensho remarked. " The first to strike may actually win." Celes then made a move. Slowly she inched her feet sideways moving around the Unknown as the hand of a clock would move around the edge. The swordsman did not move himself as she did so even as she moved beyond his peripheral vision.

" I thought you'd be the type to fight head on. "
he yelled his head facing forward away from her and the dying sunlight. " But you're a crafty wench aren't you." Celes tightened her grip further as she was being insulted. One hand pulled from under her gauntlet three darts around 10cm each. " C'mon! You've got sword pointed at me and my back facing you! " Her impatience seemingly getting the better of her, she charged forward throwing the three darts ahead of her while she prepared to swing her blae horizontally.

The unknown swordsman easily dodged the darts without by side stepping. Then with one hand parried her swing so that she kept charging ahead and almost lost balance but regained her footing just in time. " You had your chance, Novice. " he said and charged at her with blinding speed.

    ' I got him! '
Her sword still at the ready, she twisted the hilt making the flat side visible, and in doing so, lit up the sword like a beacon of light. So powerful it was that the swordsman was stopped dead in his tracks because of the light causing physical pain to his eyes.

    " Impressive. "
    noted the Requestor.

" That is not Mana. "
    Gensho said.

" No. Corbanite Crystal is said to magnify the intensity of light, it is highly valued property for artisans. Here however she demonstrated it's practical use for combat."

Once again Celes charged, this time straight facing him. The man's hand still rubbing his eyes he could barely spot the silhouette of Celes and struggled to determine how to dodge. He moved to his left with haste, but not enough to completely evade her blade as it tore through his clothing on his shoulder drawing a bit of blood. Celes noticed the crystal blade's glow stained with blood and so did the others.

  • Celes was still awe-struck that she landed a victory blow. Gensho examined her blade and the little bit of blood on it with the cut from the mercenary's arm. It was no more than slight flesh wound, comparable to perhaps a severe paper cut, but a marker for victory within the terms of this duel. The Arbiter looked at the other observers and they all silently acknowledged the win in Celes' favor. The unknown swordsman sheathed his blade. He pressed his hand onto the tiny wound and brought it to his face, as if to confirm for himself that really was cut by Celes' sword.

" Well done. " he whispered. The others took notice of what he said but Celes could not hear his words over her own disbelief.

    " W-what's that? "
    she asked uncertainly.

    " It's nothing, you win."
he said coldly, suggesting that he would rather acknowledge the win than give an actual compliment to her. The Requestor having seen enough walked back towards the entrance without saying a word. Nadezchka and the mercenary also walked back leaving Gensho and Celes to trail behind them. After she wiped the blood away, the sword was placed back inside its cover.

" Gensho, did you believe I could win? "
    she asked frankly.

" Do you believe he was fighting at full strength? "

' Again with the question to answer a question blehhh '

" Of course not. Listen I'm just asking your opinion. "

" That is understandable. Forming opinions or decisions when one only knows half of what one should is always ill-advised. Would that principle not apply to this duel as well? " he asked rhetorically. " The outcome worked in your favor. Is that not enough? "

  • " Yes... I guess it is."
After pondering over what Gensho said briefly, she understood not to pay more attention than what was necessary regarding what happened in the Duel. " Sorry for asking such an obvious question. I guess, I am just still shocked about the outcome. But you're right. Thanks." she mentioned.

" Let us go inside, shall we? "
Celes and Gensho both entered the tavern again and met up with the others. After sitting down, Celes started placing more food on her plate. The food was a little colder, but that did not stop the young woman from eating as the stress of the fight made her more hungry than before it took place. Soon everyone rejoined the eating, except the Requestor.

" Glad to see you are still willing to eat more. Mr. Ryusuke and Ms. Nadezchka were explaining what you were all talking about before I came down."
    the Requestor said.

    " Ryusuke? "
Celes questioned. It took a few seconds to realize that was the name of the unknown swordsman. She looked straight at him until he noticed and look back prompting her to break off her stare. " Oh! oh..."

  • " Please at least introduce yourself. Maybe I should have made that a condition of victory."

" Ryusuke Sakamoto." the stoic swordman said.

" So how much have you already discussed? "
Celes inquired. Her thoughts were filled with Nadezchka's ramblings and perhaps Ryusuke bad mouthing her.

" You're probably aware of most of it, but they did mention how awkward everyone was to speak to each other. That is, until you came along. " mentioned the Requestor. The others remained oddly silent when Celes looked in their direction. However she felt surprised her hypothesis about the three of them not speaking to each other was correct after all. Even if they were not really a group or guild, such lack of communication would have been astounding to onlookers.

' Just great... how are we supposed to work together on this request when everyone has a hard time communicating. My luck to be stuck with these three of all people. No wonder random request involving different parties never work out. Maybe this is why Ryusuke wanted to go at it alone! DAMNIT ' Celes did not want her thoughts to admit such a thing, after she had fought for the honor of the group and more importantly her own self worth.

" You're probably anxious to here a little more about the Request perhaps?"

  • " What is the mission? "
Ryusuke was the first to ask the Requestor. While everyone may have been in agreement that the request would be a group effort, not everyone was prepared to commit until they heard more details. While the price being paid was substantial, the task itself must be equally substantial. That would be the logical understanding to any seasoned veteran.

    " Extermination. "

" Extermination? Of what? " Celes interjected before the Requestor could finish. Everyone around her had a look of disbelief.

" Logically the answer was to follow. "

" Silence is golden and Patience is a virtue Celes. Golden Virtue. "

    " Fool. "

    " Jeez, give me a break! "
Celes yelled as all three scolded her, for her impatient response. ' Nadezchka is calling out my mistake like she did before, Gensho is probably just messing with me while still being preachy, and Ryusuke is just a jerk overall. I really need to watch what I say in front of these three. '

" Your question is an important one, but I do not have an answer. "
replied the Requestor. " Recently a farmer's livestock has been under attack by something unknown, truly unknown. The Request is for you to assess the problem, protect the livestock and exterminate the cause of the attacks. You could be hunting a few Wolfen Fangs or the Legendary Ultimate Bleue. "

  • " The mission parameters and the payment seem to have some discrepancy. " Nadezchka said. Celes wanted to ask about what an Ultimate Bleue is, but Nadezchka got her word in first. Celes agreed her point was more valid. " Endangerment of personal well-being is common for extermination type requests, but yours is the first to offer something so... substantial." Her analysis was on point and moved the others to consider other oddities about the mission.

" In the first place, why are you speaking on behalf of the farmer who's livestock is in trouble? "

" Perhaps you are the property owner? "
    Gensho asked.

" I see you will not be persuaded until I divulge a little more. Very well. The farmer was not very well off to begin with. His request, with its meager wage, never received even the smallest consideration. When he brought it before the Kingdom Affairs Office, they said it would take until the month of Nware before someone could be sent to deal with it. By then his livestock would be gone. So I took on the request of this farmer and said I would pay for all the expenses and send a group of mercenaries to deal with the problem. "

  • After the Requestors explanation, Celes was more than eager to accept the request. She had stumbled upon what seemed to be a straight forward extermination of local wildlife endangering livestock, but what she had more interest in, was the fact that these companions were exceptional when compared to anyone she had been with before. She looked at the others, but they all seemed a little cautious. She understood that, a fairly normal job that paid well was suspicious.

" Where do we need to travel? "
    Ryusuke asked.

" On the other side of Windsor Woods can be found a large farming community. "
he then presented the request letter to them. " This is the original request. You'll find the owner of the farm known as Gavin Fraser. As for directions to his farm, simply asking the nearest farm for the information and presenting this request will lead you to him. "

" His farm probably skirts the forest. The attacks probably come from there. "

    " A valid assumption. "

" It seems we are all in agreement to take the request?"
Gensho asked. Everyone looked at each other just then to confirm.

    " Hold on, Preacher. "
Ryusuke said. He turned to the Requestor. " I'll need payment in advance."

    " Advance payment?"

" Yeah. This job seems too good to be true. No offense, but I don't trust you bit. I'll need some sort of advance payment or proof. "
The Requestor nodded and told them to wait a moment while he went back upstairs for the 'proof' that Ryusuke asked for. While they waited the servers came to collect some of the empty dishes and to free up the table. When asked for a round of drinks, Ryusuke asked for some alcohol along with Celes, Nadezchka asked for some tea, and Gensho received only water. The Requestor came back with a pouch. He opened it up and showed them Ten silver coins for a total value of One thousand diamars.

" Consider this your advancement. It is more than enough for a return trip ticket with the Kensington Express. "

    " ticket? "
    Ryusuke asked.

" The fastest way to travel to Windsor Woods is via Train; The Kensington express. Before it reaches the end of the line near the coastline, there is a stop called Alban Pass. The town at Alban Pass handles all the farming and livestock from the windsor region and transports everything back here to Victoria where it gets sent to all corners of the Kingdoms. "

    " Exactly. "

" But isn't still half a day travel through the Pass to get to the farm? "
    Celes asked.

" Yes, to speed that up, I have a surprise for you all. It will be at the train station tomorrow. "
the Requestor explained. " I must retire later, and there is still other business to attend to. I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow. " he said with great confidence they would all accept the request. Before they could give him a definitive answer, he left.

  • When the Requestor left the group was met with an interesting dilemma. The pouch of 10 silver diamar coins was not taken by the Requestor.

"What do we do with this? Do we divide this up? " Celes asked. In such a situation splitting the responsibility evenly was a sensible action in her eyes. They each thought about how to proceed with the money.

    " Don't they banks here? "
    Ryusuke asked.

" Bank Institutions always closeat 6pm here in Welwyn." Nadezchka took the pouch and emptied its contents in the table. She divided the coins evenly with 2 remaining.

" Well that doesn't work. Who gets the other 2? " Celes wondered. At that, Nadezchka casually took the two coins and left the table. Celes and Ryusuke both protested before Gensho calmed them down.

    " Please, wait."
he urged them. The spectacle woman went to one of the staff members of the tavern. From afar the group could only look on as Nadezchka spoke to several people at the bar. They saw her hand over both silver coins to a staffer and was given 4 bronze coins in return. After thanking them, she returned to the table and divided the 4 bronze coins between everyone.

    " Clever indeed. "

" What happened to the rest of it? "
    Celes asked.

" It was used to pay lodging for the night. 2 rooms. "
she said while placing 2 keys on the table. Nadezchka thought it inappropriate for the males and females to lodge in a single room, especially as they were all strangers still.

" Didn't you think to ask whether we already had a place to stay? "
    Celes questioned.

" Or that we wouldn't want our money wasted on comfy beds?"
Ryusuke asked. Clearly both felt Nadezchka was too presumptuous regarding how she handled the situation of dividing up the money. Nadezchka could see their discontent and Gensho remained silent for the most part.

" The Travelers Crossroads is the closest inn Locomotive Station. The first train always leaves at 8am sharp. Certainly we all agreed to the request at this point and have every intention of boarding that train. Therefore it would seem that staying the night here, would be the best option in preventing anyone from missing the train. " she said responding to Celes. Her attention now turned towards Ryusuke. " As I see it, the Requestor gave us proof that he is capable of paying that ridiculous amount. None of us were expecting anything of that sum. Perhaps a thousand diamars was all we were expecting, and that would be realistic. And yet, we were handed a thousand as proof. Any one of us can now leave with a part of the share yes? Your complaint is petty. "

" Petty or not, logical or not, it wasn't you choice to make woman. "

" What is the expression, crying over spilled milk was it? "
The tension rose again this time between Ryusuke and Nadezchka. Celes was also annoyed but did not feel this would end as well. She tried to get between them, though unsuccessfully. Then Gensho stepped in. He opened his hand towards them and presented the two silver coins that were his share.

" Please you two. There is no need to argue. "
he began. " Celes, Ryusuke, take my two coins. " he said to them. " This one agrees with you. Ms. Nadezchka had no right to proceed the way she did, at least not without our consultation. However, her actions have been more helpful to us as a group. She is already thinking in terms of the four of us working together, are you unable to see that? " As Gensho was focused on the other two, Nadezchka listened to his reasonableness and felt relieved so much as to look away from his face out of embarrassment.

Celes reflected on his words. Her intrusive questioning, bickering with the others and duel against Ryusuke were not the qualities needed for teamwork. While she knew her position as a Chronicler took precedence over the request mission, it should not be something that would endanger everyone else due to her lack of cooperation. On the other hand, she reviewed Nadezchka's actions and saw she did not that gave herself an advantage in any way, but worked to give everyone and advantage together. And then there is Gensho, willingly offering two hundred Diamars to quell the situation. Feeling disappointed in herself, she openly apologized.

    " You're right Gensho. I'm sorry. "
She took his hand and closed it once again with the coins in his fist. " If anyone deserves to keep their coins its you. " she said confidently.

    " Hmm. I'm going to bed. "
Ryusuke said taking a set of keys.

" Ah, this one shall join you then. "
Gensho responded as if he felt he would be locked out of the room.

  • Nadezchka and Celes both retired soon after Gensho and Ryusuke had left. Their key opened the door to a room with 2 beds and a window that faced West towards Halberton Bay. Across the hallway were the men's room. Both women prepared for bed, but an awkward silence came between them. After they both lay on their beds only a few words of goodnight were shared. It had been a while since Celes went to bed this early especially during this particular season. She felt restless but did her best to not disturb her temporary roommate from her slumber.

' That was quick. She sure went down fast. '

After managing to close her eyes and get some sleep, she was awoken in the middle of the night by the need to relieve herself. It seemed the liquids she consumed were a little too much in quantity. She stumbled a little out of bed, but the noise did not wake up Nadezchka. She took the key set as one of them was need to open the washroom downstairs. The hallways were peaceful and even the staff were not present at all as she walked down. When she had finished, she came out and passed the dining area to get to the staircase that lead to the upstairs suites. Someone outside caught her eye.As she approached a partially open window, she recognized the figure that was standing a few feet away. The shining white hair under the pale moon light gave away the answer; Gensho.

' What's he doing up at this hour. Gazing at the stars? '

" Is it customary in the North to sneak up on others, Celes? "
Gensho asked. Celes was more than surprised at what he said.

' How did he know there was someone here? I was pretty quiet. More importantly how did he guess it was me?! '

" Sorry! I just, ah, saw someone out here so I thought I'd take a look ya know? "
she explained. " I mean really, um, what are you doing out there in the middle of the night? "

    " Stargazing. "
he responded. Celes could not believe her guess was so accurate. " Care to join? " The young woman thought about it but decided to join him if only for a little while. She stepped outside and moved closer to him until they were side by side. She looked at his face, which was still staring at the sky, then followed suite. Thinking back to their conversations, it was only now that she realized Gensho never revealed much about himself specifically even though he answered her questions. She believed him to be someone of a religious nature considering his attire and Nadezchka's added explanations.

" What do you see when you look at the stars Gensho? "

    " Magellanic, Ephinea, Hadiyah's Ring..."
he answered. His response involving the actual celestial bodies was not what she had anticipated. She began to think she was wrong about her preconceptions regarding him. " One may look upon the countenance of the sky and be at filled with emotion. During the Day, the radiant splendor of the Sun gives one happiness to go about our daily activities, while the shining beauty of the night can bring one peace of mind..... is perhaps what you thought this one would say? "

While Gensho was saying reciting such poetic words, she could not help but be captivated. He expressed himself with such conviction her gaze was taken away from the stars towards him. However the way in which he ended his sentence took her by surprised. The subsequent light laughter from him annoyed her to the point of pouting. She thought about leaving cause by staying she would only face constant teasing.

" Why are you here Gensho? "
she asked frankly. Gensho thought about her question. The earnest look on her face was enough to convince him of her sincerity.

" Have you ever had a close friend? "
he began. " Would you say you would do anything for that friend? What if that close friend took a misstep down the wrong path? Do you believe it the charge of a good friend to correct that ones path? Even at the cost of being shunned forever by that one. " he said still looking up at the stars. " Here in the North is a friend in need. " As he took his gaze away from the stars, he smiled and look at Celes.

    " ... Yes..."
she said to Gensho's rhetorical questions. Like most people, she had friends, but Gensho's description was a relationship of a higher caliber than she had ever had with anyone. Her Family, Acquaintances, lover, nothing fell into the special friendship he spoke off. It made her full of envy, even desiring to ask him out loud if she could be a friend to him like that. " I-I'm gonna head back now. Good night Gensho. "

" May you sleep well, Celes. "

Title: Ominous Foreshadow
Location: Grand Station Victoria
Date: Eclasen 4th 997 C.Y.A.D. 7am

" The Unknown drives Curiosity and Fear. Unfortunately the divide between them is a fine Line. "
-Captain Lionne Marcelle, Exploratory Vessel Frontier's Edge

The Port had already been working several hours by now, but 7am marked the opening of the doors for Grand Station Victoria. The title of Grand Station existed only for locomotive stations at a Kingdoms Capital City. However as towns other than the Capitals became larger, more intricate stations were needed for transportation. The station has two primary lines. The first one connects to the North reaching as far as Adanaque Kingdom. The United Kingdom Line as it is called is the longest train line in Elegos. The Second Line is known as Windsor as it passes the Region with the same name until it reaches the end of the line near the Kensington Coastline.

With the doors open, a large crowd of people started to enter and get in line for the 8am departure for the Kensington Coastline. In the background of moving people a lone figure could be seen standing by a pillar. The long dark robe with a shadowed hood was unmistakably the Requestor. The Requestor soon found himself surrounded by a group of adventurers set to leave. They discussed a few aspects of their mission and then the Requestor bid farewell to the group.

  • Celes got up early, determined to get some stretching done. He very brief duel against Ryusuke tensed her body quite a bit without much of a warm-up beforehand. That coupled with the amount of food she ate at dinner made her worry about more than just a few sore muscles. Surprisingly her roommate Nadezchka was no where to be found. Her bed was neatly arranged and her belongings placed on top. As she did a little exercise, she moved towards the window to see what was going on. She spotted Gensho, in almost the exact same spot he was standing in the night before.

' Don't tell me he stayed out there all night! '

Unlike the previous evening however, Gensho was not staring up into the sky but browsing the surroundings as people began their daily activities. Suddenly, he turned in her direction looking straight at her window. For some reason, she felt embarrassed and hid from his view. Celes decided she did enough stretches for the morning and after getting properly dressed headed downstairs. There she saw Nadezchka enjoying her breakfast with some novel in hand.

  • Feeling a little hungry herself, Celes decided to join Nadezchka for a quick breakfast before setting out on their mission. She caught a waiter heading her way and asked for some coffee with either freshly baked bread or porridge, and that it should be sent to the table Nadezchka was sitting at.

" Good morning, you woke up early didn't ya? "

" Yes. Tardiness would not be good."

" I know right? Wouldn't want to miss out on this high paying job. " Nadezchka nodded before returning back to her novel. The waiter came by with a cup of hot coffee. and a plate with 2 slices of bread and butter on the side. " So what are you reading? " she asked while spreading the butter around her toast.

" The Fall of Ultima. "
Nadezchka lifted the book so that Celes could clearly read the cover.

" Isn't The Fall of Ultima a fantasy novel regarding the The ancient swordmaster by the same name? "
she asked taking a bite out of her toast.

" It is a story based around the legend of Ultima during before and during her Tenure as Swordmaster of the North."
she explained, correcting Celes' statement with more accurate words. Celes could not help but be annoyed.

    " But it's just fantasy right? "
she asked further while taking another bite.

" It is a compendium of legends and embellishments, yes. However all legends are birthed from Historical truths. As a scholar, all knowledge is important until no longer needed. "

" Ah, so you're a scholar huh? Shouldn't you be taking on requests less.... physical? "

" That you are implying I am unfit for this extermination task is quite insulting!"

" I'm sorry. I know it is, I didn't mean it like that. But better you here it from me than that guy with a stump for a personality. "
Celes said making reference to Ryusuke.

" I am perfectly capable of supporting myself in a group effort even in this type of situation. "

" I was just curious, honestly. I meant no harm. "
Celes took a sip of her coffee and Nadezchka drank from her beverage as well. An awkward silence fell for a few seconds before Celes made another remark. " I think we can both agree it's nice we have a female companion on this mission."

" ....Yes I do agree with that. If you had not showed up when you did last night, I may have simply taken myself out of the request forum. "

" Right? Us gals need to stick together. "
she whispered enthusiastically. They both shared a laugh before quickly finishing their breakfast. Only half an hour remained until the train departure, and it was still a ten minute walk from the Inn.

  • Celes and Nadezchka gathered their belongings from the upstairs room. Once they exited the establishment, they were greeted by Gensho who had seemingly been waiting out here, ready to go, since Celes spotted him earlier this morning. He was still covered in his cloak even while the day began to warm up from the sunshine. Celes noticed that all he had with him was a near empty sling bag. She wondered whether Gensho was accustomed to traveling at all and began to worry.

    " Hey where's Ryusuke?"
    Celes inquired.

" He had awoken rather early and took his belongings at that time. When asked, all he said was he would meet everyone at the station. "
Out of all the people in the group, Celes thought Ryusuke was the unknown factor. Even if Gensho and Nadezchka have not divulged enough about themselves for her complete trust, her intuition said they both could be trusted to some degree. She thought back to her duel and how clashing blades with one another may say volumes. However she realized that Ryusuke was not giving it his all and such half-hearted attempts cannot truly show the intent of a person.

" We shall have to sprint should we tardy any more, Celes. "
Nadezchka pointed out to the preoccupied chronicler. Leading the charge Celes had the others follow her to Grand Station Victoria.

As they arrived, as Gensho stated, Ryusuke was waiting by the main entrance and beside him was the requestor. The others quickly hurried themselves as there was only ten minutes left before they would have to board the train. Ryusuke handed out the tickets that were purchased by the requestor to everyone.

" I am glad you all decided to take this request. Those tickets are good for a return travel. "
The Requestor explained. Celes was handed another two other tickets by the Requestor. " Keep these, it will make the travel easier."

" What are they for? "

" It would ruin the surprise if I told you. When they ask for your tickets, present those extra ones as well. The train staff will know what to give you when you get off. "

    " Don't lose them. "

    " I know that, jeez.. "

" When you return, come back to the Travelers Crossroads and ask give the request letter to the owner. He will contact me to meet you. Good hunting to you all. I hope to see you all soon. " And with that, the group rushed to the platform and boarded the train heading for the Windsor Region.

  • The group wandered a bit until they realized they got on the wrong train car. As they swiveled their way through the passengers, they entered a new car, and saw that it was one with private cabins. All their tickets had the same printed number as the cabin they found, so they went in and unloaded their belongings. They inspected the room and found it to be more than adequate. It may not have been the most luxurious cabin, but the privacy in itself was a great pleasure. There was seating enough for 4, and it was fairly comfortable spacing between everyone. All of their personal affects were stored in the overhead compartments. The nicely decorated wooden panels coupled with the large window made the space cozy and authentic.

" I wonder how much this cost? " Celes asked.

" This is probably a 3rd tier cabin." Nadezchka, who was sitting next to her responded. " It is by no means inexpensive however."

" Does anyone know how long the ride will be? " Ryusuke asked.

    " Approximately 4-5 hours. "
Nadezchka responded again. She pulled out a map of the region and showed everyone an estimated guess of the distance between Port City Victoria and the Windsor Region. " We might be delayed should the next 2 stops prove a longer boarding time. "

    " There are stops? "

" Yes. I saw the train itinerary when we boarded. Each car has a schedule near the boarding door. There are 2 minor stops, then Windsor Region, then a long stretch to the Kensington Coastline. "

" Let me see that map. "
Nadezchka handed her map over to Ryusuke. " This is Windsor region, right? So we have to traverse the Windsor woods and get up to here and then find the farmers home. If we're going to walk the whole way it might take 5 hours not including break. By the time we get out of that patch of trees it might already be early evening. "

    " Yes, that's a fair assessment. "

" What are you getting at? "

" I'm trying to say, if we are doing a hunt, we'll have to wait until the next day. " Ryusuke explained. Celes showed a look of confusion that prompted him to continue the explanation before she could ask for clarification herself. " See, at night, we're at a disadvantage. Just finding the damn thing will be difficult much less fighting it. Then there's all the information we don't have. The number to exterminate, where they come from, their weaknesses."

" Okay I got it, no need for a lecture." she told him. " After all we already have Gensho for that. " Celes made an obvious pass at her cloaked companion with her minor joke. He had been silent for a while even though he was paying attention. " Are you okay Gensho? You haven't said anything? "

" Silence is golden right Celes? " he said cheerfully, restating what he said to her the evening before.
