Three wolves were walking through a thicket of woods, trailing not more than a tail apart and walking in order of height with tallest first. They appeared to be looking for a place to rest, with sounds coming out of the first and last wolf that to the normal human ear wouldn’t sound like much more than huffs and growls, but to a wolfs ear, was a clear argument between where they should be sleeping. The smallest, the female at the back, clearly didn’t seem to care where they set up their camp as long as they did so. She was making complaints of being both tired, and hungry from more than a day of travel. The male in front was getting agitated as he tried to find the right spot to ensure their safety. As the arguing began to escalate, the wolf in the middle dropped the bag he had been carrying in his teeth and began to make noises before nudging them away from each other, which lead to them stopping in the small clearing amongst evenly spaced-out trees. That was where it was decided they would be making camp.

Sarah Crescent snatched the bag in her teeth and slipped behind a tree for a bit of privacy as she shifted back to human, pulling on her pair of fitted jeans, a white shirt and faded pink zipped up sweater. Returning the bag to her brothers, she began to walk around the border of what would be their camp as her brothers were busy shifting. Sarah was trying to calm herself because she had just spent what felt like the last fifteen minutes or more, arguing with her youngest brother about being hungry and needing to make the camp before they had both finally given in to her demand to just choose a spot. However, even she had, had to admit that he was fairly right on the fact that there were no signs of any game for them to hunt. She crinkled her nose at the thought of not getting to eat anything and forced herself to keep walking the circle of their camp so that as they began to set up, it smelled more heavily of her than it did her brothers because of this. It took several minutes before she finally decided to start collecting bits of twigs and fallen branches for a small fire to at least warm up before they all slept in a pile. She didn’t mind the sleep pile, really, but right now she just wanted the crackle of a fire to remind her of home before everything changed. She wanted to remember warm nights in the cabin they grew up in with their parents telling them stories, or her father teaching her about the various things found in nature that could be used for medicine and healing.

Shaking her head, Sarah tried to ignore the uneasy feeling as she cast a look around before handing off some of the twigs to Lucas as he attempted to start a fire while their younger brother seemed to be looking for any signs of game to hunt. Or so she thought, she was content to just zone out on the fire as it grew.

Maxwell Crescent was grumbling softly to himself under his breath, unintelligible even to him as he was clearing out the circle with his older brother Lucas because Sarah was tired. She had complained about sore paws and an empty stomach before it got too much for him and he snapped, telling her to stop before they were separated by force. But it gave him something to focus on, it gave him the benefit of focusing on providing for his siblings and was able to actually protect them as they took the time to rest and relax. As they were nearly done clearing out the space, he went over to a large fallen tree that looked freshly fallen and with a deep breath, dragged it over by himself for them to sit on. As his siblings were starting a fire, the hair on the back of his neck seemed to stand on end and he went on alert, as he straightened to his full height and squared his shoulders as he tried to scent the air and find out if something was around. He stopped being able to detect if anything was around as the first crackles of a fire started behind him. His ears twitched and he turned to look at the fire, the tension left his shoulders but he kept at his full height as he stood like a guard behind his siblings on the log as they all took in the fire. He could remember nights before a fire in their small cabin as a small pup, cradled in their mother’s arms as he watched the sparks and fell asleep there. He would always wake amongst his siblings, but he loved when he just got to be with their parents alone.

Feeling a prickle of warning, he spun around quickly and dropped from his full height into his best defensive stance as a human and growled as best his human throat allowed and bared very human teeth as he tried to tell whatever was there to back off. His reactions had been slow however, having been caught up in a memory and he would be the first to go down.

Name - Conner Lee Camshron
Face claim
The wolf

Age- 32

Physical Description -
Conner is a tall drink of water. Standing 6'2 and all lean muscle. An athletes body. Wrapped in warm beige. The occasional hint of defined muscle daring to peak through. A wild mane of unruly chocolate curls usually falling down into his hazel green eyes. Rarely is he clean shaven. With a days growth of stubble on his face.

As a wolf he is a large gray timbre wolf with a patch of black down his back and trimming his face.

Personality-
Conner can come off as bit of an ass. Hard and hateful even. But the man has a lot on his plate with an alpha who is normally absent from the pack. His main concern is just keeping everyone safe and the pack going. Those who he allows to get close to him will quickly see there is a softer, side to him. That he is more bark then bite. However that doesn't mean he's not willing to do what's necessary to defend the pack.

Bio-
Conner never wanted a position of leadership. Hell, he never wanted to stay on a pack. Not really. It just wasn't his style. But when his half brother named him Beta all that chained. Especially since Joseph was hardly ever around to lead the pack himself. Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad. But the pack had settled into a small down up in Colorado. Closed to the Wyoming boarder. With lots of mountains and forest for the pack to run and hunt in.

Name- Maria Rose Dayton
Face claim

Human

Age-24

Physical Description -
With a soft oval face and warm ivory skin, Maria was like a breath of fresh air. Large brown eyes framed by thick waves of espresso hair that framed her face. She wasn't out of shape per say. But she didn't have that athletic tone that most wolves had. Instead she was all soft curves. Not that she was over weight. At 5'6 she was only about 140 pounds dripping wet.

Personality-
Smart, outgoing, and witty were things that most would say about Maria. But what people often forget is her nurturing side. Which often manifests a being a bit stubborn. Fiercely loyal and quick to befriend anyone.

Boi-
It's hard growing up without a family or past. Maria was found on the doorsteps of a Colorado orphanage as a baby. Not ever knowing who her parents were. Maybe that's why she took up a profession in social work. To try and help others like her. Or maybe she just wanted to offer a hand to those society deemed unworthy and lower than trash. When she's not on the job, she is usually out in the woods behind her house. It was her private sanctuary, her place of solstice. Never understanding why the forest called to her so. Maybe she was in the wrong line of work?

'That good for nothing Joseph' Conner thought to himself as he plodded through the forest. Sniffing the air as he patrolled with a few of the warriors. There was a new scent in the air and he didn't like it. Was a new pack trying to move into the area? Make claim on his territory? Surely not. Not with all the markers and warnings he had left about. The thick canopy above only allowed a specking of light through as the leaves dances about. Rustling a fatalistic warning on the light breeze they danced with. As the search went on the splintered light slowly faded into night. Not bothering him any.

Conner liked the night. Being wrapped up in her cool vale. Watching the twinkling of stars shower down their soft light. It was one of the only times the wolf felt at peace. "Go back. I'm going to make one last lap then I'll turn in." He barked. The others not liking his orders but had no choice to obey. None dared to defy him. Especially when he felt like something could be threatening his pack. Just as he started to take a few more steps, it hit him. Fire. Humans? No, but there were things there in his forest and he knew right where they were.

Taking off at a dead run, Conner followed the smells. A female for sure. With one, no two. Maybe one male? Maybe but he wasn't sure. It wasn't until they were in view that he stopped. Hiding out of sight to watch them for a bit. Trying to stay down wind so his scent wouldn't be detected. However it seemed one of them was more keen than he realized. Wolves. Three of them making camp in his forest with a warning marker not more than 50 feet away from them.

"What are you doing in my territory?" The grey wolf snapped. Knowing they would be able to understand everything he said. Not willing to shift back just yet. "Are you mocking my pack? With a warning just behind you no less. What are you thinking?" He wasn't letting up. The hair on his back rose as his body tensed up. Ready to strike at any given moment. "I want to see your alpha. Now!" Connor demanded. His tone less than pleasant as he barked and growled. His jaws snapping at the air as if ready to bite. Honestly he just wanted them gone. Not even thinking about the state they were in.

Meanwhile....

"Please... Jessica, put down the gun." Maria said in the calmest voice she could muster. Her latest case was a teenager who started dating a biker and was now with child. Not only was she due any day. But the girl found out that Dexter was cheating on her. So with her unstable hormones and prego mood swings, Jessica hit the man over the head with a frying pan and was now pointing a gun as him and Maria. "He isn't worth it. Think of the baby."

"I am thinking of my baby!" The young girl snapped. Cocking the trigger in her hands. "The baby doesn't need a father like that. Like him. He is the scum of the earth!" Tears ran down Jessica's face as she moved the gun back and forth between the two. Dexter groaned softly but was still out and bleeding on the floor. They were both going to dye at this rate.

Training, remember the training. "What are you going to name the baby again? I bet it's a lovely name. And when are you going to see the baby of your locked up for murder?" Maria asked. Taking a half step. Trying to get closer to grab the gun. Only Jessica wasn't having it as she pointed the gun right at Maria's head.

" Riley. Riley Beth Jenson." The police sirens were blazing in the background as the teenager spoke. "I want to teach her how to play the flute like my mother taught me." The girl was balling now as tears streamed down her face. "I'm not going to jail. I'm going to run"

"That's a lovely name. But you can't teach Riley anything if you're in jail for killing this scum bag."

Just as Maria made it to Jessica the door burst open. Maria screamed as the gun went off. Nicking her arm in the process. Dextor only to the police putting him in hand cuffs. The same for Jessica. At this point all Maria could do was watch and give her statements. Why did she even try? Every hopeless case she was given turned out wrong. Not once would she have considered any of her cases successfully closed. Closed do to tragedy was more like it. Tragedy that she couldn't stop from happening. At least this time no one died on her watch.

"Hey Maria, good job. Still saving the world, one stray at a time?" The detective asked. Trying to help take the edge off things. Giving the paramedic time to check out the wound. "Make sure you go to the doctor. Ok?"

Maria nodded and headed out once she was given the all clear. But the hospital was the last place she wanted to be. Right now she wanted to take a nice long jog in the woods behind her place. It was her own private sanctuary. A place were work and cops and unstable teenage mothers couldn't get to her. However it was late by the time she got home. The sun already set. With a sigh, she changed anyways and grabbed a small knife and a hand light. Nothing was going to keep her from that jog. Not after the day she had. Maria needed to feel the ground pounding under her feet. Smell the fresh scent of pine as the crisp evening air whipped about her.

As soon as she started on her nightly run the day's events came slamming into her. She could have died. The jerk of a man could have been killed before her eyes. She was tired of it. Of always putting her life on the line trying to help these people. Her own tears started to fall as she held back the sobs. She wasn't so weak that she needed to cry. Yet the tears just couldn't be held back any longer as she ran through the trees as fast as her legs would take her.

Sarah turned around as Maxwell let out this low warning growl, before her butt was hitting the dirt and Lucas was holding himself over her in a protective and defensive stance as best as he could. She growled under him and squirmed as she was also quick to find herself flat on her back. “Get off of me!” she tried to shove him off, but that was something she never could get a handle on, was when her brothers were determined to protect her. She let out an annoyed huff and tried to wiggle her way out from under him, but she found herself unable, as he quickly grasped tight to her shoulder and sent a warning look her way. They didn’t know how many were actually out in the woods and as always, she was over protected.

Maxwell let out another warning growl as this other wolf began to make demands, he was still barring his useless human teeth at him. But he was knocked off of his defense about a warning sign. His head tilted to the side for a moment before he shook his head and glared as he got himself ready to fight if needed. “What warning sign? We saw no warning sign.” He growled out clearly thinking the other meant a physical thing. That was right before he seemed to puff up with self important pride. “I am Alpha.” He declared, before growling in annoyance at the snort that sounded behind him. He cast half a look behind him towards his siblings, only to see Lucas give his head a shake, telling him about what he should focus on.

Sarah couldn’t help it when she heard her brother declare himself an Alpha. Yea, okay in all honesty, he was the one who was leading them but they had never used the term before then. He had always been the one who was most protective and unafraid when they were growing up. She just, had been unable to hold back the amused snort. “Only because you’re actually good at it. Get off of me!” she declared again, this time giving her brother a hard enough shove he was knocked off balance enough she was able to get out from under him. Quick to her feet, she seemed to freeze just as fast at the sight of the other wolf. There was something about him, she wanted to go to him. But she held back. “What… What warning?” she asked, stumbling over her wording for the first time since she was a pre-teen and they had taken their first trip into a human town.

Maxwell kept himself squarely between his sister and this unknown wolf that was making demands of him. Even as he heard the scuffle behind him of his siblings and was innately aware of the fact that his sister was out of cover. He knew she could hold her own, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t try to keep her safe anyway. He was set to start asking questions of his own when a sound reached his ears, and he half turned his head to listen. Running. No, it was a pair of runners steadily hitting dirt. Then his nose picked it up. Among the most delightful scent ever, was drying blood and tears. His stance relaxed and his guard was dropped as he changed the direction he was facing. He was only vaguely aware of his brother Lucas taking up his defensive position, now having to protect two. He didn't see the exaggerated eye roll that Sarah did. The only thing he could think to say was "I think she's coming this way."

A hand full of wolves stepped out from behind Conner. All of them growling, ready to attack. But Conner didn't care about them. He only cared about the woman before him. She was acting like a pup. Fighting with her pack. But that scent, those eyes. She was... slamming his eyes shut, the beta took two steps back befor snapping at the warriors who joined him. "Didn't I say go back to the pack!" His yellowish hazel eyes went to Maxwell. The one who dared to call himself alpha. "You're alpha? While your pack mocks you? Your no alpha."

One of the warriors dropped his head slightly. "We're sorry. But your safety and the safety of the pack comes first." Then another warrior piped up. "We picked uo the scent and then the fire. It wasn't long before we found you all." The wolves didn't make a move to attack but they didn't look friendly either. Only adding to Conner's frustration.

"What marker? What warning?" He sent a warrior over to a tree behind the three. Covered in claw marks and a heavily marked with the musk of the alpha, Joseph. "What mark. What warning." He geowled out. The sound if her teeth snapping in the air as he barked out at the three. Still, his eyes kept going to the girl. Surely she wasn't his.. no, thst thought wasn't allowed at a time like this.

Watching them it was quickly becoming clear. "You three are over grown pups. Just as naive as a fledgling." He sighed. "I'll give yiu two choices. Shift and come with us or die here and now as intruders who didn't take the time to get permission to camp in our territory." Conner looked to Maxwell. Who now looked as distracted as he felt. As ALPHA, you should have known that." But could he really attack the woman? He wanted to go to her. Transform and wrap his arms around her. This feeling was only pissing him off more. This wasnt rhe time or place to have stumbled across his mate. Not like this.

A sheen of sweat covered her body as she came to a stop. How far had she ran? Two miles, maybe three? She didn't know. Her heart was thundering in her chest as she panted for a breath. "Maybe it's time to head home." Maria mused to herself. Relizing she went further than she meant to. After a few deep heavy breaths she turned and started back the way she came. However the scent of fire and a soft glow in the distance caught her attention. Was someone out there or had the fire started on its own?

Pulling out her phone she started to call for help. But the lack of signal stopped the call from going through. Now she had to decide. To investigate or go home. Natural survival instinct said to leave the area. The other voice said to check it out. She stood there insure what to do. Stay or leave. "You would never stop hating yourself if the news said some one died and you could have helped."

Maria was slow as she made her way in the direction of the glow. The smell of something burning filling the air. She paused as something that sounded like growling rang out. "Wolves?" No, wolves weren't in this area. There couldn't be. She was really starting to second guess this idea. Fear was starting to take over as she headed away from everything. Maybe it best if she got home after all.

"She?" Conner sniffed the air. What was a human doing out there this time of night? He didn't need a dead human onnhis hands but she couldn't find them either. "If she gets any closer kill her." He said to his warriors. "You three shift and come now. I'm beta and acting alpha so do not piss me off."

Sarah shook her head "I won't shift without privacy." she said, but her woods seemed to be ignored in those moments, as more was going on around them. She let out a sigh, and folded her arms as she waited, watching all the wolves around them with a very critical eye. She tilted her head as they were shown the warning, but it wasn't from the direction they came from, and on top of that, if they had walked past a different one, it was likely that they had been too busy arguing. She was partially at fault for this, they were in trouble with these other wolves, a proper pack, because they'd been so busy arguing.

"Have you got anything to eat?" Sarah decided to ask, picking up the backpack from where it had been beside the log and heading towards the largest tree away from all the other wolves. "Because I don't remember the last time we got to hunt, and if I catch one of you boys trying to look as I shift. I'll kill you myself." she boldly said, not used to being watched as she shifted. Hidden, she put her clothes back in the backpack before shifting to her wolf. She brought the bag out and shook out her fur before sitting so the fire shone in her blue eyes and showed off the different browns of her fur. She couldn't help sitting prettily so the one giving orders would notice her. Sarah didn't know why she wanted all his attention to herself, just that she wanted those intense eyes on her.

Maxwell let out this deep warning from in his throat as the first wolf they saw gave a command to kill the woman who was running in their direction, a faint moving light in the trees told him that she was prepared, but alone. He was ready to declare if any harm came to her, that he'd kill whomever killed her, but Lucas did what he does best. He protected him from himself, and he kept him calm as he found himself with a hand over his mouth and his brothers scent filling his nose. He let out annoyed huff before his eyes went to his sister. Both of them watched as she seemed more than willing to do whatever it was this wolf wanted, and that annoyed him. He didn't like that they were being called pups, and he had no idea what a fledgling even was. Eventually though, well aware he was out numbered, and that they didn't have much choice, he shrugged Lucas off of him.

"Shift... We don't have much choice." Max told his brother, reaching up to scratched the side of his face before going to start putting out the fire. If their father was still alive, and they found him, and he found out he hadn't properly put out a fire, he'd be in trouble. So, he made sure the fire was well put out as Lucas stood off to the side and stuffed his clothes in the backpack and shifted. He looked almost identical to his sister as he stretched out his body and shook out his own fur. He went to protectively stand beside her as Max was the last to shift, the fire well out. He didn't turn to any of them right away though, his attention clearly staring off in the direction the woman was in. His ears were fully pointed that way, as he sniffed the air. She was leaving, running back the way she came. His head tilted, sniffing a few more times as if to make sure he was okay before he slumped and his tail drooped.

Together, their scents mingled, clearly used to being together as wolves. Even though Sarah was drawn to go towards the wolf in command, that she lingered in among Lucas and Maxell, as one of them carried the backpack in their teeth. They walked together almost touching each other as they were led away from where they had nearly made camp, led away to wherever it was this pack lived. How did packs live? Was it houses? Cabins? Holes in the ground? Their family had all slept in a large one roomed cabin, that had been it, and it had been enough for them. But this was more than they were, more of them that didn't smell anything like each other. Their scents didn't mix, their scents were all unique. And Sarah, kept turning her nose towards the wolf in charge, wondering what he used to smell so good.

Everyone was forced to file in line. Conner leading the way. The warriors scattered around to make sure the beta was well protected. One warrior stopped a few times, sniffing in the direction the human had been in. Checking to make sure they weren't followed. "You will not be allowed to leave or walk around alone until know you can be trusted. Keep in mind you are lower than omega and have no rights to boss him around." Conner said to the strangers. Stopping occasionally as he spoke to look back at the wolves. Checking out the female a few times. "I want your names." It wasn't a request, it was an order. He didn't ask for much and demanded everything.

They walked through the trees and dipped down into a tunnel. By the time they came out it looked like they were in the middle of a small village. There was a school house with maybe 3 rooms, a cornstore, and a dozen or so houses. Weres walked about in human and wolf form. Everyone stopping to stair at the newcomers. A few growled as if to asert their authority. Others tucked their tails as if ready to run. "Hurt anyone in the pack and there will be no mercy for you." Stopping, Conner shifted and clothes were instantly handed to him. Standing 6'2, he wasn't the tallest men around. However none held the same lethal aura. Even as a human he held the presence of an alpha.

"Stacy, find them a house or room away from the pups and expecting." A light gray wolf yepted and ran off. "Nathen, get them food." A blond standing almost 6 food turned and started off down the street. Looking back to the three he tilted his head. "Names.. I'm Conner, beta and acting alpha." He turned and walked over to the female, reaching out to touch her fur. Only to have his fingertips barely brush it. "Females don't stay with males." Yet he wanted to order her to his house. "But we can make a one time exception since it smells like you three have never been apart.

Maria couldn't breathe by the time she made it home. The barks and growls. It had to be wolves. Still, logically it didn't make since wolves weren't native to Colorado were they? Normally she didn't lock the door but tonight, tonight had her spooked. Especially after the days events. Heading to the shower, she cleaned and changed before colapin her bed.

Sarah opened her mouth to answer him when he asked their names, but both of her brothers gave her a nudge to keep her quiet before they were heading off down this tunnel that forced them to walk in one by one. When they came out, it almost looked like they had entered a human town, but it was clearly all wolves. All like them, some walked around as human, others as wolves and it took them all by surprise. Her mouth fell open as she gazed around her before her attention was very quickly drawn back to the first wolf and her tail gave a wag as she heard his name. Acting Alpha, she wondered where the actual Alpha was, but didn’t care because he was reaching for her, and she closed her eyes to lean into the touch. The moment his fingers brushed her fur, she was taking a step forward to actually feel his fingers. It felt like bliss, and she practically nuzzled his hand as her tail began to wag noticeably.

Maxwell gave a deep sigh as he watched the pack around them, one ear trained on the other man as he listened to him. Taking in how he gave orders without question, before turning to look up at him. Quickly realizing that they were actually probably the same height. He decided to sit as he bit back a growl while he watched his sister. Lucas was brushing against her side, trying to get her attention, but it was useless. They didn’t know what was going on with her. So, with a deep breath, he decided to fill this current pack leader in on them, since he was demanding things, but allowing them food and shelter. Something they hadn't had since they left behind their home in an attempt to find their parents.

“I’m Maxwell, that’s my brother Lucas and our sister Sarah. We have never been apart, aside from maybe our birth. I think, we’re only a few minutes apart.” He said, tilting his head as he took in the information about this pack. “Pups… You have pups? And expecting? Like, more pups to come?” he asked, seeming intrigued by the idea.

“Not now Max.” Lucas quickly said, dropping the bag as he went to seat himself between his brother and Conner. “Thank you for allowing us to stay. And for the food.” Lucas said, trying to be the voice of reason. “We won’t get in the way.” He said, earning an annoyed puff from Max, who very clearly wanted to explore as he cast a look around them. Lucas would admit he wanted much the same, this place was so different from what they knew.

Sarah was far more focused on Conner; she didn't care about what her brothers were going to do about the fact that she was basically having her head petted. But her attention quickly went from Conner to the female that came running up, the one who set off to find them a place to stay, and a soft growl of warning came out of her. A clear look of shock came across her wolf face then and she took a few steps backwards to plop her butt down hard right beside her brothers. She didn’t know why she had done it, and it surprised her and her brothers. All she could think, when she went to growl, was that she didn’t want anyone else around him, but could not for the life of her explain why she felt that way.

One corner of Conner's mouth turned up as he felt Sarah lean into his touch. Was she already excepting of me? It was hard to tell. Her brothers seemed more cautious than her. But it was her growl that made a brow to rise. Protective too. "Maybe I should keep Sarah with me after all. I mean, do you normally growl at people that are trying to help you?" It wasn't right to tease her so. She wasn't even part of the pack. However he wanted to see her riled up. The color high in her cheeks. She was probably grand when she was all worked up. Conner curled his fingers into a fist, already missing the feeling of her fur.

Stacy stopped in her tracks as she looked to Conner then to the wolf. Her lips curled back then stopped. They had rules there. Rules that kept them all safe. "Last house on the right is empty. There are 2 bedrooms. But we are having an extra bed put into one of the rooms. It should be enough for the three." With that she swept her gaze over the three. Eyes lingering on Man then Lucas. "Find me if you boys need anything else." Turning she was off again.

Conner finally looked to Maxwell and nodded. "We have families here. It's a safe place. With that said, stay away from them." He wasn't about to chance the young with these strangers. "Once you three are settled in and fed then we will talk some more." His eyes dropped to Sarah. He wanted to touch her once more but didn't dare to.

"Lucas, you seem more alpha type than Maxwell." He said turning to head off down the street. He needed to let the others know that there were new wolves there.

Nathen came back with a bag full of food and looked around. "Where is Stacy and Conner? I got you food. Do you have a place yet?" He asked, looking between the three. "I can take your food there." He was more than ready to help out. The man was a bit on the young side still. "Can't wait to learn what your pack is like. Where are you all from?"

Sarah turned eyes back to him and gave a glare up at him “I don’t know why I did that.” She said, looking up at him. “I also don’t make a habit of growling at help.” She added, choosing not to comment on his saying that she should be staying with him. She didn’t know if that was such a good idea, and sat her butt back down as she pressed into her brother Lucas’ side and stared off after Conner as he walked away from them. She wanted so badly to follow after him but knew that her brothers would probably follow after her. So, she stayed with them. Wondering why they were being given a house with two rooms and beds. Did they not sleep together for safety and warmth like they did? Were they that secure here where they did.

Maxwell growled softly as the man walked away, saying that his brother was a better Alpha then he was, but he knew that he had been leading them along since their parents disappeared. He was why they were still alive, if they had stayed, he was sure they would have died of hunger or something else. Huffing, he decided to shift back to human and was pulling his clothes on as the boy returned. “Yes, I believe its supposed to be the last house on the right.” He said, looking over the boy and realizing he towered over him. “Led the way.” He said, making a gesture for him to take them to their house because he wasn’t entirely confident, he knew where it was.

Lucas kept glancing back as he and Sarah trailed after their younger brother, wondering why that girl had kept looking at him. He wasn’t used to specific attention unless he was prying apart his siblings, then he was used to their ire because they didn’t like him for stopping them from fighting.

“So, your pack is big. Ours is just us. Couldn’t tell you what happened to our parents. We were born in the mountains, in uh… Where are we?” Max asked as they were walking down the path past houses where many seemed to stop and stare at them, others were trying not to be noticed as they peeked out of windows. He squared his shoulders and walked at his full height as they went, wanting to let them know he was a big man and could help to protect them. He didn’t want to harm anyone here, not know this place at pups, had families. He had always wanted what his parents had.

Sarah trailed after her brothers, turning her head to catch any hints of scent from Conner, something about it made her feel safer and more relaxed. She wondered; what it was he did since he was the acting Alpha. What had happened to the Alpha and where he had gone. She trailed her brothers to the house they were given and was surprised when they walked up to it and saw it was far bigger than the cabin they had grown up, was bigger than all the places they had chosen over the years to camp.

Max was the first to open the door and walk inside, he sniffed a few times before he stepped fully in and cast a look about in the dark before he asked “Where is it safe to build a fire? There are no lanterns.” Lucas and Sarah were walking about, sniffing and checking to see what this home was like.

Nathen watched them as they walked into the small house. It was like a trailer home. One room on each end with the livingroom, bathroom, and kitchen in the middle. Two beds had been placed in the larger room with one bed in the smaller one. "You flip the switch for lights. Turn on the heat or air for comfort." He frowned as he watched them. It was like they had never been in a real house before. "We have huddle nights ever full moon and sometimes on the weekends. But since most like to be alone with their mates, many stay in the small houses."

Walking into the little open kitchen, Nathen sat the bags down. "If there isn't anything else you need, I have some other duties to take care of. If you need help sniff me our Conner out. Joseph is hardly around anymore. No one really knows why and we all just follow Conner since he helped to set this place up.

Turning to leave, he paused at the door. "Oh, there will be a few humans here tomorrow. If that's a problem then stay inside. We don't attack anyone who is invited here." They had asked a social worker to come and look over the daycares and homeschools set up for the young. Anything to get the government off their backs. Everyone in town proper were saying the kids were abused out here. And with the social worker everyone would see the truth of things.

Conner was pacing in his tiny place. There was a living room, kitchen, and bathroom. However all he wanted to do was run back to Sarah. He doubted she even knew that she was his mate. HIS mate. He should go and drag her here right now. To hell with that others. It would piss off many of the women of he did take a mate. But there was no missing the attraction. He was just about to do that when a voice rang out.

"Did I come at a bad time?" A few of the pack members were there to talk to him about the strangers. How to handle them and see if they should be allowed to stay. After hours of talking they decided to test them and make sure the new wolves could be trusted. For the first time Conner was scared. He needed Sarah to make it. It become park of the pack so he could take her for himself. But would she be ok with a stranger as a mate and husband?

It was late when Maria sat up. She couldn't sleep. Visions of death danced in her head. Wolves attacking everyone and dancing around the fire. Not that it was real. It was all just a bad dream. Rolling over, her eyes fell on her calendar. "On right.. I need to check out the little farm tomorrow." She didn't want to go but it was needed. Everyone claiming they were some kind of new cult.

Sarah sniffed about the home and watched the boy leave before she was taking the backpack and going into one of the small rooms to change by herself. Ever since they had hit preteen years, she had not shifted in front of the brothers. Stretching, she came back out and headed straight for the food that had been left in the small kitchen. Lucas shifted and got dressed before he went to play with the lights, making them all look up with a bit of awe. They left a small one on and decided not to play with the other switch for fear of breaking it. She and her brothers ended up eating most of the food that had been brought for them, before clearing a spot to sleep. She gathered the blankets and shifted alone in a bedroom before curling up with her brothers to sleep.

Max had made sure no one was in the house, and then sat on the couch to enjoy the luxury of the softness. He helped decide which small light was best to leave on and helped make up the bed before they were all digging into the food and ravenously ate nearly all of it before they were shifting and snuggling down in a pile with a blanket over them and having one of the soundest sleeps they’d had since their parents went missing. He slept well past dawn, before a scent drifted in, to him through the cracked open window. It stirred him awake, that enticing smell from the night before. Trampling over his siblings, he was quick to shift and dress before racing out the door barefoot in search of the scent.

Sarah yelped as her brother rolled over her before growling softly as he left the blanket off of them and the door open. She slowly got up and stretched out her body before shaking out her fur and heading back to the bedroom to shift and dress. Lucas didn’t look like he planned to move any time soon, warmth or not, so she headed out on her own. Instead of heading into the village however, she turned to head into the woods, intent on paying back the pack for feeding them and sheltering them with medicinal herbs. It didn’t take her nose long to find some and she knelt to pick some of it when her senses told her something else, and she sighed “I know you’re there. You don’t need to hide.” She said without turning around. She gracefully stood and turned to look and see who it was.

Max followed his nose, walking barefoot easily as he made his way to what was clearly a human. He tried not to noticeably scent the air as he stood back to study her. He felt like his breath had been taken away by her stunningly dark brown hair, and he leaned on the nearest wall as he took her in. Everything about her was absolutely perfect, and a sigh escaped him, and he held onto the wall as he fought his own body to walk up to her. He didn’t know why he needed to go to her, he didn’t know why he needed to go and bury his nose in her hair and neck. He wanted to do what he’d seen his father do in the mornings with his mother, he wanted to step in behind her and wrap his arms around her and place a kiss on her shoulder as he kept her close before dancing with her in a private moment that was just for them. He wanted to hold her and never let go, and he didn’t know why. Why did she smell so good?

Maria looked around the little homestead style community. It was no wonder the rest of the town was so upset. Calling them a cult. There was nothing dangerous there. Yet she felt like she was being watching. The hairs on the back of her standing on end. There were lots of paw prints all over the place. Large paw prints. Were they breeding dogs somewhere? If she didn't know better she would even say they were... wolf prints. Turning almost in a full circle looking around for anything that might catch her eye. That's when she saw him. The man leaning against the wall. She didn't know what to think. He was stunning. Yet at the same time the little voice with in said to run. That there was something dangerous about him.

"Ms Dayton, the pu-- the pack of kids are this way. Come on and I'll show you the school, daycare, and the clinic for vaccines." Stacy said as she led the way. Trying to put on the friendliest air about her. "And we have a cannery and a smoke house if you would like to see how we preserve our foods and meats."

"Y-yes I would like that. I also want some time to walk about on my own." She knew that there was no way she would see everything she wanted. And being led she would only see what they wanted her to see. Looking back once more before heading off to follow her guide.

"OH, I don't think it wise. We've had an issue with.. stray dogs. I would hate for anything to happen to you Ms. Dayton." Stacy said as if dogs was what she was worried about. The last thing needed was some wolf forgetting the human was meant to be there and attacking her.

Conner smiled as Sarah stood. She was gorgeous. Everything he had ever wanted. "You have a good nose." Taking a step closer he sniffed her neck. "You will join me for a bit. Show you around the pack and community we have worked so hard to build here." It wasn't a request, it was an order. His eyes dropping to the plants. She was to perfect. How was he ever going to hold back from announcing he found his mate? And with a mate he could easily take the title alpha if he wanted. "That is if you would be willing to take a walk with me." Her going with him would be much easier than him following her around like a lost pup. Or ordering her around like the omega or one of this warriors. No, she was going to be his. She already was, even if she didn't know it.

After much negotiation, Maria finally got some time by herself. The place really was like a town of it's own. A park, some shops. Lots of dog places and dog only vets. It was strange but she didn't see a single pet around. It was the only thing that had her worried. That was until she turned a corner and came face to face with a growling juvenile. The lean black wolf wasn't very old. Yet he was more than strong enough to take down Maria on his own. "Good dog... Nice dog..." Maria held her hands up as she started taking slow careful steps back. Regretting walking alone, sure the animal was going to kill her.

"Say you will come with me." Conner said as he finally head out his hand. He had a feeling the three was lacking in some of their education. He would know soon enough. If anything, Sarah would know there was no fighting this feeling between them. With in a week she would be announced as beta female or even luna if he took the role of alpha. "I think there is much we need to talk about. I want to see where your education left off at."

Maxwell felt a pleased rumble in his chest when the woman saw him, when she looked right at him, and he swore he could hear her heart skip a beat from here. He let out this content and happy sigh before he was watching her walk away. He felt so… Content, just knowing that she saw him. He moved, to sit down on a bench and wait, watching the school where he could smell a large number of pups had gone inside. And others, he could smell something else, but he wasn’t sure if it was others learning, or mothers to be. With a sigh, he just decided to wait as he slipped into his own dream world as life went on around him, easily ignoring the looks and stares from the pack members as they went past him, since he wasn’t technically part of their pack, since he was new.

After a long moment, he wasn’t exactly sure when, but he picked up her scent on the wind again, alone. She wasn’t with the one from the night before, so he rushed to his feet and followed it until he was rounding the edge of a building and seeing a pup, a teen standing there looking at her. Her fear had him reacting instantly, and he wrapped his arms around her waist and turned her away as he gave the pup a warning through his body language. “It’s alright. Just a pup, they’re trained not to harm guests.” He said aloud, moving to start walking away with her in a different direction. “You’re safe. I promise.” He added, like he had grown up there his entire life, but he was repeating what he had been told. Of course, with her so close he couldn’t help breathing in her scent and feeling every part of his body relax. He wanted to keep her right there in his arms, but his grip was so loose that she could easily break free of it and him.

Sarah watched as Conner walked up to her, her eyes closing and tilting her head as she listened to him take in her scent. She almost shuddered, almost. Because as he breathed her in, she breathed him in. But of course, her brow did arch as he tried to give her an order to go with him around the pack’s little town, village. Whatever it was. But he back tracked just as fast, and she snorted in amusement at him while leaning her weight against the tree. “You want me to go for a walk with you, around the pack to, what exactly? See all the buildings I walked past last night?” she asked, smirking up at him. “Are they really going to be any different?” she added, before pushing off of the tree and moving around him. It took a lot in her do that, because in reality she just wanted to lean into him. Why did he smell good? What was this pull that demanded she be as close as possible?

Sarah had knelt to pick a few more herbs at the next tree when she saw his hand in her line of sight and turned to look up at him as he asked again for her to go with him. She let out this soft sigh at the look in his hazel green eyes. They looked so green right then, that she found it hard to resist. She took his hand as she stood back up, her blue eyes sparkling at his touch. “What do you mean education? Like, what the humans study? We’ve never did more than the basics.” She told him, falling into step beside him as they took the path back towards the town. It went easily missed by her that she was still holding his hand, the connection left her wolf side at peace. “What other studies are there?” she asked, not aware he could mean the traditions and stories that came with being a wolf. “We know how to hunt. We can fight. And we know how to blend… Mostly.” She added as they walked past the house she and her brothers were staying in.

"Do you know the importance of rank? Another beta would have challenged and killed your brother for claiming alpha. Do you know why there is an omega, what his place is, how to treat him?" Conner kept his fingers around her hand as they walked. A firm grip without hurting her. Gently he pulled her closer to him."Do you know how to tell when you've found the one you're destined to be with?" He couldn't help but to flash a toothy grin. This was paradise. For the first time he could see himself fighting for more just to make this woman happy. He wanted someone to step out of line so he could show off his skills as a leader and combat. To have her focus on him. Only him. "And here is a question from last night. Do you know why we have small individual houses?"

Her blue eyes were the most striking thing he had ever seen. Like two pools of ocean that threatened to drowned him. Full of life. This wolf was different from most of the females. There wasn't another that would have dared to talk back to him like she had in the woods. He liked it. "You know about healing herbs but have you ever worked in a clinic? Everyone here makes themselves useful. We need to find your place in the pack."

Maria was almost in tears when Maxwell swept her up. Before she even knew what she was doing, Maria was off walking with this man. Somehow his words were so comforting. It took a few heartbeats before she could look up. It wasn't any man she was now walking with, it was him! The one who had been watching her. "I.. I was just looking for the play ground again." She stumbled over her words at first. "And that dog was going to attack me."

Those steel eyes of his and aubern hair took her breath away. Never had she seen a man so beautiful before. So lethal. It was shocking that on some level she wanted to stay with him that this. Maria's face flamed as she realized how close he was holding her. Then his words finally sank in as she pulled back from the man. "What do you mean not trained to harm guests? Does that mean the are trained to attack? You said they? It was the first dog I've seen in this town. Are you people brre attack dogs?" Her brow furrowed. "I think I should find Stacy and go." Putting a little more space between her and this man. He scared her. His words scared her more. Yet at the same time, a tiny voice said it would be ok.

Conner pulled Sarah to a stop. "Tell me why you're on your own like this? Where is your alpha really?" He wanted to make her his beta. No, become alpha so she would be luna. Give her everything a wolf could ever want. "Give me a reason to keep you and your brothers in this pack." His words almost pleading as he looked at her. He wasn't going to wait forever to tell everyone she was his. But first, she needed to be made part of the pack.

A small frown creased Sarah’s brow as he spoke, she knew the Alpha was the one in charge who took care of the pack’s best interests and that a Beta was under them, but she had no idea what an Omega was. He had her on the ranks, that was for sure and she let out a heavy sigh because she never actually got to admit it before he was moving closer to her and asking her something that made her blush a little bit as he smiled at her. His last question though, she knew she could answer. Thanks to the one who brought them the food. Clearing her throat, she looked away from him as they walked.

“I know what an Alpha is, but no, I don’t know what an Omega is or how they should be treated.” She admitted but began to talk quieter as they kept walking. “And the houses, are because more prefer to be alone with their mates once they find them.” She said, with a nod before glancing up at him. She was avoiding the bit about finding the one they were meant to be with. “I have no clue what a Clinic is, but my father taught me about these.” She added, holding up the herbs in her hand. “And others. I can remove a bullet, treat a wound and burns.” Sarah told him, before letting out a soft sound of surprise as he pulled her to a stop. The confused look that came across her face was very easy to see.

“I don’t understand what you mean… Max is Alpha, he's here somewhere. I’d have died if it hadn’t been for him. I’d have starved trying to find a trace of our parents. It’s… It’s been years, but he decides where to go and for how long. We’re all we have left.” Sarah said, pulling on her hand but she didn’t pull it free. “I don’t know what to tell you to keep us here. You probably have some test for us, but… I can’t promise we’d pass. It’s just been us for…” Her eyes drifted away from him, glossing over with tears as she appeared to take a moment to think. “Eight years. It’s just been the three of us for eight years.” She said, her blue eyes sparkling with unshed tears as they looked back to his hazel green eyes.

“It wasn’t going to attack.” Maxwell promised, letting out this soft sigh as she moved away from him. He felt a loss from not having contact with her, but her fear was still in his nose. He wouldn't force her to let him hold her, instead stuck his fingers into his pockets and let her move away from him. He didn’t want her to be afraid, especially of him. “It was still just a pup… I doubt it’d have harmed you. I haven’t been here long, but I was told they don’t harm invited guests.” He said, watching her and hanging his head as she said she needed to go. “Stacy… I remember her.” He took a deep breath, scenting the air to find hers. It was hard, with the gorgeous woman in front of him, but he found it and slowly took a hand out of his pocket to gesture her back towards the school. “I believe she’s this way.” He said, waiting for her to walk before falling into step beside her.

It almost felt like a physical pain as he kept his distance from the woman, whose name he didn’t know. But he kept his distance with her as he walked her back to where he picked up Stacy’s scent, he knocked because he didn’t know where he had permission to go and was set on sticking to the roads. He then moved away, and to stand behind her on the road, his hands in his pockets again. He needed to wait, he needed to watch and make sure that the woman who smelt so good was okay, that she was safe before he retreated again. Maybe, he should return to his siblings and see how they were doing. Especially if she was not going to be staying.

Carefully, gently Conner grabbed her chin with his free hand. Tilting her head so her eyes met his. Honestly he wasn't sure what to do with this girl. Happy she had some skills but nothing that was useful as a human. They would have to pass as both human and wolf. "Shh, don't cry. I don't think I can handle that." Leaning in he kissed softly just above the right eye then the left as if kissing away her unshed tears. "I want you to work in the clinic. Learn human medicine and wolf." After a long moment he let go of her chin before dropping her hand. "If your brother tries to test for alpha here then I'll have to kill him. So make sure he doesn't try." Slowly Conner started to circle her. Like a wolf stalking his prey.

"I'm moving so my house will be closer to yours. You will stay with me and not your brothers for now on." Stopping behind her, Conner wrapped his arms around Sarah. "You three will attend tutoring lessons on our history and life in the human world." Leaning in he sniffed her once more. Oh yes, she is the one. There was no mistaking it. "And once I take my place as alpha of the pack you will become luna." He would make sure she fit in well enough. He would take care of their education, costs, everything. He wanted to take care of her. "I don't want you all to go. I don't want you to go."

As those words left his mouth, he couldn't have been any more shocked. Growling low. At himself for his stupidity and for his need to make sure she knew it wasn't a request. She would be his. He might have even marked her if a voice hadn't rang out behind them.

"So, you think you can take me for the spot of alpha? And when did we get new members?" Joseph asked as he stepped out. Dressed in a hawaiian shirt and khaki shorts. Long blond hair and a beach tan to boot. "I only left you in charge for 3 weeks this time and already strange ideas are filling your head." He looked to Sarah and winked. "So, who is she?"

As soon as he knocked Stacy turned around. Wide eyed as she looked at the human then the wolf. The smell of fear was all over her. "See, this is why I didn't want you running around by yourself. What happened?" Pressing her lips into a frown she reached out to grab Maria by the arm. "Lets get you inside and checked out." Looking back to Maxwell, Stacy gave a slight nod as if she already knew what happened.

"A dog.." Maria paused as she looked back to the man then to Stacy. "A pup I guess just scared me." She gave a nervous laugh. "So you train fighting dogs? Wolves maybe?" Maria kept her eyes going between the two before trying to pull her arm free. Not liking being grabbed. "This place isn't too far from where I'm staying. Were those your dogs I heard the other night?" Yes, surely they were just dogs. There were many breeds that looked like wolves.

Stacy let her arm go as she let out a frustrated sigh. "I don't know what your talking about. The other night where? Dogs are rampant all over this county. We have trained dogs to help keep the feral dogs and mountain lions away." Looking to Maxwell she gestured to the woman. "You want to help her inside Maxwell? She seemed more relaxed with you then me."

Maria couldn't help but to let the corner of her lips turn up ever so slightly. "Max? That's a good name. I'm Maria by the way. Nice to meet you." She held out her hand for his. "Sorry I didn't introduce myself earlier."

Sarah felt like she wasn’t breathing when he took hold of her chin and asked her not to cry, sucking in a sharp breath, she closed her eyes as he then kissed above each eye. She felt like her entire body broke out in goose bumps as he told her what she was going to be doing. If he hadn’t told her she was going to be learning more about medicine, she would have declined. But when it came to her brother, that was a different story. “I think something else holds his interests.” She managed to say while squaring her shoulders and rising to her full height, aware that Max had only stepped up to be Alpha because she and Lucas had been incapable of it at the time. Though, her main focus was on Conner as he circled her. She didn’t let him leave her sight.

“What makes you think I want to stay with you?” Sarah quipped before closing her eyes as a shudder ran through her and his arms wrapped around her. Involuntarily she barred her neck for him as his scent just seemed to surround her. She had no idea what she was doing, just that instinct was telling her to bare her neck for him. “What if I don’t want to learn about the humans?” Sarah managed to ask, looking at him through her lashes. “And what is a Luna?” she asked, wondering if her brothers would be okay with a command to learn about wolf history and the human world.

When Conner growled low, she growled back at him, and half twisted in his arms to look up at him before another voice sounded and she turned to see who it was as her heart felt like it was in her throat as she took in the man standing there. She scoffed softly when he winked at her before putting a few steps between her and Conner. It took her a moment to register who this new man was.

“Alpha… I’m Sarah. My brother’s Lucas and Maxwell are here as well. We…” She glanced at Conner “We needed shelter.” She held up the herbs in her hand “These were a thank you.” She said before placing them firmly against the chest of the man who had just had his arms around her. “I’ll leave you two to talk.” She added before turning to walk back to the house they were staying in. Sarah still managed to walk tall and confident as she went, despite noticing that more than a few members of the pack were gathered and watching them.

Max nodded to Stacy in return, sure that she suspected that what had occurred before the woman even told him. He perked up in an instant when she spoke of the night before, and he took several steps forwards as he went to tell her that it had just been him and his siblings. That she had never been in danger, but one glance at Stacy as he closed his mouth. Instead, he slowly and carefully walked up to be a step behind Maria. Hearing her say his name caused him to smile widely, sure that if he had his tail, it would be wagging endlessly. “You were scared before.” He said with a shrug before taking her hand. It was like sparks when their hands touched.

“Maria… A beautiful name, for a beautiful woman.” Max said, shaking her hand before bending to kiss the back of her it and take in her scent once again. Instinct, he was functioning on instinct. He let out a content sigh as he stood back up and moved a hand to gently touch her shoulder and began to guide her gently after Stacy and wherever it was she had been going to take Maria. He had no idea what was held in each bigger building, so he just followed the pair like a lost little puppy. Though he was a very happy puppy because he learned his beauty's name. His? Why was she his? “Stacy… Can I ask you some questions after?” he suddenly asked as they were walking, studying what he could of Maria’s as they walked. He had a few questions that needed answering and she seemed his best source of information. He still wasn’t sure he trusted Conner.

Conner was quiet as he watched Sarah leave. He wanted to pull her back to him. He wasn't finished with her by a long shot. Although the way she had stepped between him and Joseph did make him smile. She was going to make a good mate. "Sarah is mine and don't you dare lay a finger on her." Conner snapped. "And yes, I want to challenge you for Alpha. You're always gone. You don't even notice the changes we've made to better the pack."

Joseph watched the female leave. Already he knew Conners weakness and would use it against him. "I see and you think you can take my place so easily?" The large tanned male said with a laugh. "Then by all means, lets have it out. Now. Right here."

"Those aren't the pack rules and you know it!" Conner snapped. He was about to jump on the alpha when stacy came running up.

"Conner we have a problem. A pup almost attacked the social worker. Worse she lives close enough that she might have seen people shifting. How do you want this handled?" It was only then that she realized she had addressed Conner before Joseph. Quietly she stepped back and bowed low. "Joseph." As soon as she acknowledged him she looked back to Conner. "I have Maxwell watching the human."

Joseph instantly shifted to wolf. "The human is lunch." With that he took off running.

"Stacy, go find Sarah and her brother. Have them and anyone else you find meet where ever Maxwell and the human are at." With that he shifted and went off running after the alpha.

Stacy had promised to talk when she got back. Asking Maxwell to keep Maria in the office while she went to find Conner. The human couldn't be allowed to leave. Now Maria was upset all over again. "Am I being kept here? What's going on?" Crossing her arms as she leaned back against a desk. Yet her eyes couldn't help but to drink Max in. "Scared before? What are you talking about?"

From outside the sound of a wolf howling rang out. Joseph was demanding the human be brought out. Maria stiffened as she took a quick step closer to Max. "And what was that? A hand reaching out to grab his sleeve.

Stacy had followed Sarah all the way to her house. "Sarah. SARAH. Conner needs you and Luca. Go to the school house as quickly as you can. NOW. It's a pack emergency.

Maxwell sighed as he watched Stacy leave, not sure what was going on but he left his back against the door to better keep an eye on Maria and keep her safe. “I don’t know what’s going on. I’m new here, but I think they want to keep you safe. I want to keep you safe.” He told her, wondering how to answer her about her fear earlier. “You just, looked scared facing the pup.” He decided to say before that acidic smell of her fear hit his nose again, only moments after a loud howl sounded from outside. He knew the power behind the howl in an instant, and his muscles went tense as she came to him for protection, fingers wrapping tightly around the short sleeve of his shirt. His arms went around her protectively and he unconsciously pressed a kiss into her lush brown locks. “I am not going to let anything happen to you. I promise.” He said, resisting the urge to hold her closer he guided her to hide under the desk and glanced out the windows to see if she could see anything.

“I’ll be back, you’re safer here.” Max told her, glancing up at the door to make sure no one had come to get her. “Stay right here, promise me you’ll stay right here.” He told her, his steel eyes looking into her deep brown. He waited for her to confirm before he was leaving her there alone. It hurt him to do it, but he couldn’t risk her seeing any more than she already had. Outside of the room, he bent the handle of the door just enough it couldn’t turn and open before he was hurrying back out the front, shedding his clothes as he went. He shifted the moment he opened the door and took a defensive stance, growling as he faced a wolf demanding Maria. “Mine.” He growled, still not at all sure why he kept thinking that way. He wasn’t putting enough of the pieces together.

Sarah had just opened the door when she heard Stacy and turned around to look at her “What’s going on?” she asked, letting out a yelp of surprise of Lucas raced out of the door past her because he heard he was needed, and he was still in his wolf form. He was tearing off down the path towards the howl that sounded, which sent a chill down her spine. “No… No, we don’t harm them. We never harm them.” Sarah said, doing something she hadn’t done in years. She would have to get clothes from one of the other girls, as she shifted and tore off after her brother towards the school. As she got closer, she knew the snarl in an instant and came racing right past the Alpha, she knew his scent from earlier and she placed herself squarely between him and her younger brother. She didn’t care if she was out of place, just her and her brothers, three fully set to protect the human within.

“This is not the way! Pack or not, every wolf knows you don’t harm a human!” she growled, showing fang as she snarled at him. Sarah was set to stand for an ideal her parents had taught her, they had avoided harming them for their entire lives, no matter what had happened to them. And the three of them had been through a lot in the last eight years. “Nothing that she could have seen if worth this!” Sarah said as she stepped forwards, ready for a challenge and a fight. Lucas looked much the same and was only half a tail behind her, because if his siblings were going to fight, then he was going to fight.

“She’s mine. I promised she was safe.” Max snarled, not moving from where he was in front of the door. His tail was touching it, as if that was going to make sure no one got past him inside to Maria. The instinct to protect a mate was showing itself strongly, but he wasn't willing to start the fight, just defend.

“Conner… Help, please?” Sarah said, turning her eyes towards the one in question, convinced that whatever side she was on, that he was going to be on it as well. Then she recalled what he said earlier, and she gave him a look “You said you were going to be Alpha and make me Luna, so do it. Become Alpha.” She told him, aware that most of the pack was starting to gather around them. She still wasn't sure what a Luna was, but if it protected the human and her brothers, then she was going to use it to her advantage.

As Conner joined the group just outside of the school, he looked to Sarah and snapped. "Silence woman. I don't want his fury coming down on you." Looking back at Joseph, the hairs on his back stood on end. Conner was wanting to wait for enough witnesses to officially claim alpha. Joseph on the other hand wasn't going to play by the rules. Leaping at the Beta with fangs with his fangs bared. The fight begun as the two wolves bite and clawed at each other. The scent of blood feeling the air. A few more shifted as they barked and growled at the two fighting. Wanting in on the action. For a moment the alpha was on Conner's back. Biting deep into his shoulder. Conner rolled, sending the alpha toppling. A few howls rang out at the act. Then Conner got a good grip on Joseph's neck. That was before a warrior stepped it and bit at Conner's back flank. Causing him to let go. The fight seemed to go on for ever. The two wolves exchanging blow for blow. When it was over Joseph was on the ground unmoving while Conner stood over him.

"I am Alpha! I have ran this pack for months now. I have insured your safety." Turning a heated dead gaze to Maxwell. "We have new wolves that will be joining our pack." With each step blood dripped down his front right leg, wounds and gashes. "I hear you are the alpha of your little three wolf pack. Renounce the title or I will cut you down next." Conner didn't want to have to fight the wolf. However he didn't want anyone questioning him as alpha when this was all over.

"Sarah is my mate and will be Luna. She will be treated as such." The rest of the pack howled out as he looked to the female wolf. Thinking about some of the things she had said to him. "To honor the new pack members who helped with the defense of a human, we will huddle tonight at the camp fire." Slowly he pulled his gaze away as he looked around the gathered pack. Most now shifted into wolf form. "Who contests me?" None seemed to speak up. Instead they howled accepting Connor as the new Alpha. New ranks would have to be passed out. But that too would come with time. For now he just wanted to rest. Praying Maxwell would be smart and stand down from the title.

"Last matter of business. We can't let the human leave if she knows about us. I need three to question her. Do we allow her to stay of she knows or do we kill her?" His knowing eyes turned to Maxwell. He could see what the wolf didn't yet understand. Just like his sister. His mate was going to be a human. That human. "She can't leave the area until we know she won't talk."

Hearing the dog, no, wolves had Maria screaming for someone to let her out. "Max.. MAX.. MXWELL!" She tried the door a few times but it wouldn't open. "Holy cow. What have you gotten yourself into this time?" The sounds of fighting slowly dead. Now All she could hear were barks, growling, and howls. Moving back from the door Maria put herself in a corner with the legs of a chair pointed up. "Please.. I just want to leave and I'll pretend none of this ever happened."

A few of the females walked up slowly to Sarah, sniffing her. "What right does she have for Luna? She isn't mate worthy for an alpha." One snapped. With out warning, the females jumped Sarah. Each wanting the title for themselves. A new fight had started. One for the right to be with Conner and to lead the pack by his side. Thinking the newcomer wasn't worthy of anything, lower than the omega even.

Sarah whined as the fight started, because it hadn’t been what she intended to happen. She meant for a proper challenge; she knew there had to be a proper challenge. But it had been ignored by the Alpha. She kept dodging around other wolves and kept Conner in her sight at all times, it felt like she was hurt every time he was, and her heart clenched as he was seriously injured. She went to him, rubbing along his side and walking with him as he declared himself the new Alpha, making her wag her tail lightly as she was going over in her head what she needed to do to help him heal and stop the bleeding. She tensed slightly though when he looked at her brother.

Maxwell stayed right at the door to the school building as he watched and waited, the outcome was not entirely what he had been expecting, but he was sure it was better than the other. His ears went back as he was confronted with what he’d declared the night before. He could win, the other was injured badly enough but he wasn’t interested in looking out for any one other than his siblings. And he had watched how Sarah watched and went to Conner. If this was who his sister chose, he wouldn’t stand in the way. “As long as Maria isn’t hurt, she cannot be harmed.” He said as if that was his compromise. “Then I yield.” He told him, dropping his tail and head in acknowledgement and Lucas followed his lead. With that settled, he turned, shifting to open the door and head back inside. Someone could fill him in about the details later.

Max dressed as he practically ran back down the hallway, bending the handle back into place as he rushed into the office. He panicked for a moment when he saw Maria in a corner with a chair on his side between them. The howls outside likely weren’t helping, and he knew the chair wouldn’t stop one of the more determined. But she was his to protect, he knew that deep inside of him. He hurried to her, around the chair and sat down to take her into his strong arms and just wrap her in a protective hug while placing himself between her and the open door. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry… You’re safe but…” his eyes fell to Stacy as she filled up the door. He almost growled at her, only just holding back for Maria’s sake, he could practically feel the terror as if it was his own. “I’ll go with her. Please… Please just let her go home.” He begged, looking up at this other wolf like she was the key to getting Maria out of there.

It took Sarah’s brain a while to catch up to the fact that Conner was claiming her as mate and making her Luna. Something inside of her preened at the very thought, that she was his. But she had a more pressing concern from her new title and a pack huddle. Her mate was injured. She huffed and nosed him towards a building her could smell herbs coming from, probably the Clinic he had been talking about. “The pack can wait for an hour; we need to stop your bleeding first.” She said, giving him another nudge and push towards the building. She turned to see where her brothers were to ask them for help, and in turning was just in time to see the attack so she managed to duck it with a snarl.

“You dare without a proper challenge!?” Sarah snarled, crouched low and baring all of her fangs. “Show respect for your Alpha who needs healing!” she added with a growl. She was not going to have this; she was going very quickly from angry to pissed. She fought with two brothers nearly all of her life, she would not go down easy. It didn’t matter that more than one other she wolf was trying to fight her. She tossed them off and away, before taking them down by breaking one of their legs. She was not happy, but she did not get out unscathed either. She was covered in scratch marks and half bites. Panting, and the only one still standing she growled at anyone who came near her before trotting back to Conner.

“We need to treat your wounds.” Sarah told Conner, unaware she had any of her own. “Come on.” She told him, nudging him once again towards the clinic. “Someone bring the girls once he’s done!” she called over her shoulder without looking back because she needed to take care of her mate first. Inside, she sought something to wear before shifting and pulling it on as she began to dig through the Clinic to get supplies, but her hands were shaking. Everything felt like it was coming at her all at once, and tears sprang to her eyes. She turned around to look at the man calling himself her mate, and a blood covered hand went up to cover her mouth as she couldn’t stop it. She sucked in a sharp breath and began to cry “I don’t… I can’t…” Normally she wasn't like this, normally she was the level head that could handle treating injuries, but this was all new to her.

Sarah didn’t know that outside Lucas, who kept others clear of her fighting, was running around to find healers before sending them in slowly. He heard her cry and whined, sending the rest in all at once. The girls she hurt to keep her title and mate, he decided could all wait and suffer a little bit for not having honour.

Conner shifted, pulling on a lab coat and grabbing some of the drapes to cover with. Reaching out, he pulled Sarah into his arms and gently held her there. Swaying back and forth slowly. "Shh. It's the one thing I can't stand. To see you cry." He hurt like hell but he needed to comfort her first. "Luna is what we call the mate of the alpha. Luna is the female equivalent of alpha. A title only given to the mate of the alpha." His calm tone belied his current state. "Can't you feel the pull when I'm near? The energy when we touch? We are meant to be mates." Conner rested his head against her back as he held her close.

"Doctors. The doctors will be here soon to patch us up. You will be learning from them. Sarah, you'll be a great asset to this pack. He let out a heavy sigh thinking about Maxwell and the human. "I know you brother wants the human to live. But I have to know where she stands." His voice hardly a whisper as he spoke on. "I will kill her if she proves to be any kind of threat." If the brother got in the way then he would kill him as well. Not something said but implied. Conner slumped against Sarah as he finally passed out from the pain and blood loss. Three doctors finally making into the clinic, looking at the two. "Move so we can tend Conner. He was hurt bad. I can smell the blood." One of them said, ignoring everyone else. Two of the doctors going to work on Conner while the third started on her. "We need to patch you up as well."

Maria yelped at Maxwell made it into the room. But as soon as she realized it was him she relaxed a degree. Allowing him to pull her into his arms. Laying her head against him as she calmed. Not once had she relied on a man. Needed another to help be her calm. Especially seeing how every relationship she saw was messed up in some way. Girls too young to have babys, boys pretending to be men and failing. Maria almost laughted hearing Maxwell speek. Convinced she wouldn't make it out of that place alive. Still, ahe couldn't bring herself to move out of his arms.

"Maxwell, we need to talk first. Either here in front of her or in private away from her. But you heard Conner." There was pitty in Stacy's eyes as she watched the two. Maxwell was doomed to have a human as a mate. That alone came with riskes. But this human may know too much and might not be allowed to live if they thought she would talk. "Think you can come talk to me for five minutes? You had some questions and I have some of my own." Looking to Maria she sighed. Hopefully the human wouldn't be stupid. She actually kinda liked this one. "We wouldn't go far. We'll leave her in her just a little bit longer and we'll be on the other side of the door."

Sarah calmed and relaxed into Conner’s arms the moment they were around her, closing her eyes and burying her face into his covered chest. She took in a shaking breath before letting it out as she wrapped her own arms around him “Mates… Is that why I just knew you would protect me?” she asked into him, trying to take in his scent but only getting the coppery smell of blood. "You need to sit down.” She told him, trying to pull away from him to make him sit down. Since he had wrapped his arms around her, he had stopped her tears. But he didn’t sit as she wanted, and sigh came out of her. “My brother isn’t a threat, I doubt she is.” She said, sure that she wouldn’t be able to let her brother or mate fight and cause harm to each other. She made to try and get him to sit again when he was suddenly slumping against her and panic shot through her as she barely managed to keep him up right, she was so caught off guard.

“Conner… Conner!” she called to him, managing to maneuver him over onto the nearest thing, a table. She was turning to go back to the herbs when the three were coming in and she growled a warning at them, looking menacing with her mouth covered in drying blood. “I don’t care what type of healer you are; don’t command me to move.” She pushed the one closest aside and grabbed ground up Yarrow in a glass jar, she knew it by smell alone. She then handed it to the one she pushed “Stop the major wounds from bleeding with this, and it should kick start the healing process.” She said, gesturing for them to start before pushing up the sleeves on the white lab coat she also wore. It was then Sarah hissed in pain and turned one arm to look at the long claw marks there that marred her skin. “Oh.” She said, pouting as she had to allow one of them to attend to her when she wanted to help take care of her mate.

Max looked up at Stacy and shook his head, he couldn’t pull himself to move away from Maria as he kept his arms wrapped around her. But he also knew that it was a risk because they didn’t actually know what she saw, or what she knew. He was part of this pack now, if his sister was here with the Alpha then he wasn’t going anywhere. But he had his questions, and he let out the softest whine. “I just wanted to know why she smelt so good, why it feels better to have her like this.” He told her as he looked at her figure that still filled up the door frame. “And my sister, Sarah… Why does she keep going back to Conner?” he looked at her, waiting because he had asked his questions.

Whatever was going on, Max knew there was no way he could be apart from Maria now, not after holding onto her like this where he was so fully wrapped around her. He couldn’t be away from her when he felt how soothing it was to him and his wolf side to have her close, to breath her in. “I have to keep her safe… I want, I need to talk to Sarah… To the Luna, and the Alpha.” He said, taking in a deep breath and sitting up straight as he looked at Stacy, wondering where he and Maria were supposed to go with a request like the one, he had just made. It was new to him, having to ask to talk to his own sister, but that she actually held a position over him now when he had spent the last eight years as acting Alpha.

Stacy sighed hearing Maxwell talk. Guess this was going to be in front of the human who was already starting to get worried over his questions. "We should have talked in the hall. Think of it as fining your soul mate." She said hoping he would read between the words. Some wolves had to settle and ever found that person they were always meant to be with. Others found their match and would do anything to stay with them. Sadly his match seemed to be human. "You two can leave. BUT!" Stacy looked to the human then back to Maxwell. "If you leave her side for even a moment then you both will be in trouble. You, me, and one more will be assigned to... question her. You can't interfere with any of it. We will do what's necessary for all." Stacy turned to leave, only to pause once more. "No you don't. You already know what the answer is going to be. But they are both hurt after the fight and being tended too. " With that Stacy walked out with a frown. She didn't see this going well. But she had been wrong before. Nothing good could come from having a human mate.

Maria was very quiet. Very still as she listened to the two talk. They were going to question her about something? Seemed there was a question of her staying or going? Like hell she was going to keep Max with her at this point. Yet this felt so right. Never had a man ever caught her eye like he had. She wanted to curse herself. Especially since she was sure now that she walked into some kind of cult. But she wasn't stupid enough to voice that. "I smell good?" Maria finally asked ever so softly not sure what else to say. That thought made her heart skip. Best complement she ever had. "I want to leave. Can I please leave now?" As soon as she was far enough away she was going to run. They were all nuts. Even if she could feel that Maxwell meant her no harm. He was still part of the crazy place and she didn't want any part of it. It scared her. More than dealing with the unstable macho men that should have never been fathers in the first place.

"Calm down!" Snapped the doctor at Sarah. "You clearly have some knowledge but we no more in this. So let us to our job." Still, they didn't forgo her suggestion, using some of the yarrow of the more superficial wounds. They also used a few other things along with stitches to sew Conner up. It wasn't long before they had him stable with an IV and the bleeding stopped. Then all three of the doctors were on Sarah. "Luna, you need to learn to trust and rely on those in your pack." One of the doctors said. "We aren't here to hurt you or him." Said another. As they cleaned her up, a few pills were held out with a glass of water. "It will help with the pain, help with healing, and help to prevent infection. Medicine had come a long way past the herbs.

Conner groaned as he tried to push himself up off the table. "Sarah.. Where?" He couldn't fully focus. Really he shouldn't have even been awake yet. But the internal need to make sure Sarah was safe after everything that happened overrode everything. One hand reaching to pull out the IV while he struggled to keep his eyes open. "Damn drugs." He hissed knowing that they gave him things for pain and sleep. "I want my mate." He barked out, ready to fight any who stopped him. That was until his eyes landed on his mate. The doctors already giving her lessons in modern medicine. A slight smile curling his lips. She hadn't said no to him. Instead she calmed in his arms. She had excepted him as her mate it seemed.

Outside the sun was starting to set already. A huge bonfire lite for the wolfs to frolic around. They had a new alpha. Although to many Conner was already alpha. There was now a luna in the pack for the first time in years. Even some new blood. Barks and howls were starting to pick up once more as they played about. Celebrating everything that had taken place. Many not even knowing about the human that was there with Maxwell.

Max felt like his heart skipped a beat as Stacy told him that he’d found his mate, but it was followed by a moment of dread. Maria was human, she was everything he was supposed to avoid and never harm. She was almost like a forbidden thing he was never supposed to have, and yet here she was, actually meant just for him. He swallowed thickly and pressed his nose into Maria’s hair to keep calm as he listened to Stacy go on about questioning her and the very risks it posed if she answered them wrong. If her life was on the line, so was his.

All Max could do, was give Stacy a very reluctant nod when she left them alone there in the room. He wasn’t so sure they were actually allowed to leave, since he was not allowed to actually leave his newly discovered mates side would she even feel free? Wasn’t that something all wolf feared, not being free? Yet they were going to impose it on her, impose it on his mate? Maybe it was better if she stayed here, but there was probably going to be celebrations that would only raise more questions that he wasn’t so sure he was allowed to answer. He couldn’t even talk to his own sister, kept apart from her for the first time in his life since birth.

Blinking several times before he looked down into Maria’s eyes, he couldn't help but smile at her innocent question. “Yes, you smell good. Absolutely amazing.” He said before he placed a soft kiss on her forehead, something he'd seen his father do with his mother. “We can leave… But… I need to speak with my brother first.” He told her, gently brushing hair away from her face before he was moving his arm to allow her to get up off of his lap before he stood. “Hold my hand, don’t let go and don’t leave my side. I promise, you’ll be safest this way.” He said, wishing he could offer more of an explanation, but he knew that was going to have to wait. They couldn’t talk here.

Slowly leading her outside, they never actually made it far before he saw his brother in his wolf form and his heart sank. He couldn’t go to him. With a look of longing in his tear-filled eyes, he turned to Maria and slipped his arm around her shoulders to walk with her down the path that would lead them away from the pack. “Never mind, he’s busy. They all seem busy.” He whispered to her, trying to use his larger frame to his advantage to keep her from seeing more wolves than he was sure she was ready for.

Sarah snarled at the healer who snapped at her, moving to be where she could see every little thing that they were doing to Conner. Her head went from one side to the next as they did a number of new things. She wasn’t sure if she liked the sewing that she watched them do to him, but the wound was smaller, and she very lightly ran a finger along the top of the bandage after before letting out a yelp of surprise when they converged on her. She growled a warning, but was too curious about what they would do, so she was again, watching every little move they made. She was definitely too curious to be embarrassed as they tended to her, before frowning as they held out these odd little things to her. Their shapes almost like candy. Sniffing at them, Sarah made a face and pushed the hand holding then away, they didn’t smell right to her nose. She was about to tell them that she would just make a healing tea later on when she heard Conner’s voice.

Sarah was swift, moving around the healers to take his hand and smile down at him as she brushed a strand of curled hair from his forehead and looked into those gorgeous hazel green eyes of his. “I think you need to explain things to me better before I see them.” She told him, poking an uninjured part of his chest. “And no more passing out on me.” She also added, shaking her head and giving him a look that meant she was serious.

Letting out a sigh, she bent her head to rest it on him before letting out a light laugh at the sounds of playing and howling outside picked up. “I think they’re starting without us.” She said, trying to figure out if she could join him where he was lying when she stood up straight as the healers seemed determined to pester her with the little things, that they said would help her. She tried to wave them off with her free hand, refusing to let go of Conner’s hand. Though if he asked her too, she wasn’t so sure she could bring herself to out right refuse them.

Lucas had felt odd, watching his younger brother leave. Something sat heavy inside of him, but he didn’t give chase because he knew the woman with him was human. With a heavy sigh, he turned his attention back to the building behind him, then to the girls who had attacked his sister. He gave it a few more minutes to let the healers do their work, knowing the oldest of them was one of the hardest to tend too when she got hurt. When he was sure that she had been tended too, he shifted to open the door and poked his head in. “Do I send the other ones in now?” he asked, wondering how each she wolf was going to get treated after the damage Sarah had done. His self assigned job done, he ran off in wolf form to join the celebrations, seeking out Stacy.
