Just a place to converse as we get to know each other and sort through plans for our characters. ❤

I'm still waiting for 2 more character sheets and wanted to give it a few more days before I make the main roleplaying thread.
If there's no interest, I, or someone else who is keen, could take on an additional character. 4 characters seems a little bare, but anything more than 6 is too hectic. I thought 6 could be ideal, but we may have to settle for 5!
Thank you for everyone's patience so far. I've had a few busy (and a few bad) days in between the initial rp proposal and finally creating this OOC thread. I'm grateful

I also realised I didn't outline any expectations for this roleplay. Now, I don't mean to poop on anybody else's way of doing things around here but...

  • It's ok if you can't reply 24/7 and you're busy.
  • You don't need to write a whole novella if it's not your style or you're experiencing writer's block/a rough day. Quality > Quantity.
  • Communication is sexy. If you're uncomfortable with something, please let me or others know, and if you have any ideas, feel free to share!

I can play the 5th character if we can't find another player. I'm the GM for my in-person tabletop group, so an extra character won't be an issue for me.

Get some good sleep, Cofi!

Thank you!

I'll bump the recruitment thread one more time to see if we can create less work for you. But I appreciate you taking on an extra character! ❤

Hey, everyone. I was working on writing a character for another RP (horror/mystery), and I was considering that they might work for this RP, too.
I was planning on making them a former serial killer turned charity worker / professor.
Possible kind of secondary villain / anti-villain. Or "unlikely ally" of the protagonists.
What do you all think of that idea?

Hello!

I actually like this idea. Although I've had a bit of help in planning on who the actual serial killer is, this character of yours could be viewed as a 'guardian' figure by the rest of the group. Somebody older who they think they can trust. They'd ask them for help, about details of what Elden Hollows used to be like before, about anything suspicious back then etc.

Perhaps when the group are digging into the victims' pasts, they come across a few murders that happened decades ago when Marchie, Reginald and the other victims were teens. The friend group could find the connection between the cold cases? They could think the current murders were done by the same person and this is the killer resurfacing. But they're wrong.

The person responsible was actually your character. This deters the characters away from solving the murders at hand, shows them they can only trust eachother. I'm open to your character fleeing, instead of getting arrested too. It makes the friend group on edge and also, still keeps you involved in the roleplay knowing your character could make a special appearance.

If you'd like to be more involved in the roleplay, you could also make another character to fit into the current friend group we have? It's entirely up to you, just thought I'd throw that offer in there!

probably only getting smt out tomorrow or day after

Thank you so much to the GM for your feedback. I will definitely take those things into consideration.
I was planning on having my character doing her crimes (against other teenage girls) in the 1960s, serving time in prison in the 1970s, and working as an English teacher in the 1980s (present day).

Oh, hey. I was wondering, what is the time period that this RP takes place in?
I kind of feel like having very modern technologies like mobile phones, etc. could ruin the mystery aspect of a story.
Not to say anything negative if you already made a deliberate decision for some reason.
Just something for consideration.

I would appreciate anyone's response or ideas.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! It’s 2019, and I don’t plan on Covid-19 being a thing in this roleplay.

As for modern technologies ruining the mystery aspect - I hear you, since it’s a common critique, but personally, I don’t agree that the mystery element is completely ruined.

Yes, you can communicate instantly. Yes, you can verify information with a touch of a button. However, technology can also add another layer to the story. Doctored footage creates a false lead, there’s no phone reception at the worst times, security systems are somehow hacked so characters have this false sense of security, etc.

With that being said, I’d like to let you know that the main roleplay thread is linked above and the roleplay has started.

If the use of modern tech doesn’t align with what you’re looking for in a mystery roleplay and you’re no longer interested, then I completely understand and take no offence! Either way, thank you for engaging!

While I agree that older time periods benefit the super detective style of mysteries, I think modern technology benefits the paranoia thriller aspect of a mystery. Can you trust the "verified" information if your only sources are Reddit posts and eye-catching headlines? How much do you actually know someone if all you have to go on is a curated Instagram account? Did the killer install a tracker app on your phone? Is he watching you right now?

A tech-savvy villain would be a very dangerous opponent for our rustic Scooby-Doo gang. I'm not the GM, of course. Just hypothesizing.

Exactly! And that's an idea I like the sound of. Somebody who's everywhere but nowhere at once.
A former police officer who, somewhere down the line, managed to assist with more digital aspects of the job since the police force wasn't big enough/didn't have the funding for a separate division which deals with cybercrime. After he quit the force, following the death of his relative, he gets more interested in technology and does some freelance IT work in Montpelier. He now hardly stays in Elden Hollows - so his old colleagues and acquaintances say. He keeps a constant eye on the people he believes are responsible for his sibling/cousin's death.

Just wanted to let everyone know I’m back to recruiting for this rp as one person dropped out. However, we can still continue roleplaying!

I think I’ll just make another character later on in the day (or tomorrow) to save some trouble with recruitment.

I’ll also make my post some time today! It’s 5:30am right now and I’m going to the gym! Sleepy Sleuth Sleepy Sleuth

Who dropped? I'd like to know before I write myself in circles trying to incorporate them (even more)

Ok thanks I'll scrap what I had for them and edit my sheet. I need to switch some things around so I can have Ronan interact more with Amber and Paige anyway which I hadn't gotten around to yet, so he might be changing some hobbies and interests that I was gonna use for Ajax.

That does mean no post from me today and probably not yet tomorrow either.

Hey, y'all. I just got my character's prequel story thread and character sheet posted.

If anyone would like for my character to be their teacher or former teacher, let me know.
I think it could be a good tie-in for characters.
Or let me know if you have any other ideas. Here or by PM.
Thank you for reading!

My chara is currently in senior year but I could change this if it makes interactions with others easier. I'm open to them being a (former) student as well.

I'm still under the weather unfortunately so if people want to take a bit of a lead with suggestions concerning our characters' interactions/history pls do so

OK, y'all. I've figured out a possible solution for the student / non-student issue.
We could have the high school located next to the community college, on the same greater campus.
My character's class would be a combined class for upper-level high school students, and lower-level college students.
The class would also be open to former students as visitors.
That way, all of the player characters could potentially be there at some point.
It lets you be in a class for the purposes of character interactions, without having to commit to being a full-time student.
Let me know what you all think. Thanks.

Perhaps we can wait until most of us are in one place or do a fast forward soon so it's easier for others to jump in? It's kind of closed off and a little isolated to rp towards.
