The Murders of Elden Hollows - Recruitment - Link to read/remind yourself of the plot.

Name: Carolina Browne

Age and Birthday: 19; June 21st

Appearance:
Carolina Browne.jpg
Personality: Kind, quiet, hard-working, and perhaps overly trusting.

Education: Finished high school but was never interested in going to a university.

Occupation: Works on her father's farm and occasionally helps out at her uncle's auto mechanic shop.

Background information: Carolina has a good family life, if an unremarkable one. As the middle child, she sometimes got lost in the shuffle between her more studious older brother and her outgoing younger sister. She has an interest in going to trade school at some point, but she plans to wait until her brother comes home from his studies abroad.

Notable relatives: Father, Uncle

Misc./Additional information: Empathic, keen eye for detail, very good with animals.

Name: Ajax "Romeo" Moreau

Age and Birthday: 20, August 21st

Appearance: Ajax is presented as a rangy man, about 6'1 in height. His hair holds little waves, styled into the natural, neck-length, black wolf cut. A few strands that start his bangs are dyed with a tinge of beige. At first, you might consider his eyes as a "Cold Autumn"; muted, and just a calm blue-amber shade. His iris color basically is a replica of how his moods can change from a reserved being, to a more interactive one. Ajax's bottom lip is pierced with snake bites that do a full loop, occasionally switching out the ring he uses. The side of his nape reveals a slender tattoo, one that is knit into his skin to portray the image of a tree branch with birds and blossoms.

Personality: Ajax prefers to observe others before getting to know them, never hesitant to speak whenever asked, but not really wanting to start the conversation in the first place. If he could, he'd do things alone. A lone kitten, as some would call him back when he was little. The only sport he really had interest in lies in Badminton, but even then he can seem athletic without doing much on a court. Ajax has no problem raising his voice at someone, male or female, maybe even something else.

Self-defense is probably the last thing he'd forget, because you'd think he's always ready to fight. Despite the cautiousness already emanating from him, once you actually let him warm up to you, he tends to be funny in or at certain means/times. An intriguing person to him is someone who can yell at him back if he did it to them (within reason). Perhaps there is a bit of masochism inside (not the sexual term). [HABITS/HOBBIES: Smoking, Zoning Out, Toying With Others].

Education: Floral Design (Major)

Occupation: Evening/Part-Time Flower Shop Seller

Background information: The Moreau family has been known to take several jobs at once, and though Ajax was anywhere but poor, everyone seemed to agree that keeping their hands full beyond the dinner table was more enjoyable. Except him. He didn't have much passion to work at anything, but to live up to his parent's expectations, he accepts that he'll be the next owner of his mother's flower shop. Sometimes whenever Valkyrie needs help with studying, he stays behind to help her out since no other relative would do it for him. It was always that way; siblings stuck together, while the adults acted as if they didn't exist...Even so, his Ajax's relationships overall were healthy. Maybe it was just him that considered it gloomy, because he made himself more detached than ever.

Notable relatives:
  • Silas Moreau [FATHER - "Feline Fine", Cat Café Owner]
  • Felicity Moreau [MOTHER - "Bouquet Boutique", Flower Shop Owner]
  • Valkyrie Moreau [YOUNGER SISTER - Highschool Student, Works At "Feline Fine" Part-Time]
Misc./Additional information:
  • Bouquet Boutique sponsors the flowers being put at Your Second Cup in mourning for Marcello
  • Ajax is really into music, not having a favorite type, but can be considered a DJ if hooked to a stage

Will Edit If I Feel The Need To Add More.

Name: Ronan Marsh

Age and Birthday: The baby of the group just turned eighteen and is both wary of and delighted to be officially an adult.

Appearance: Warmly tanned skin, wild chestnut brown hair and glass-green eyes. Long-limbed and a bit lanky but growing into his own despite not being overly tall. He has a cheeky smile and a small gap between his front teeth that adds some imperfect charm.

Personality: Courageous, adventurous, curious and at times a little mischievous. He’s quick to offer aid and shoulder tasks, yet equally easily distracted and enamoured by the new or unknown. Torn by his love for the town and most of all, his friends, and the urge to fly away to a new horizon.

Education: Senior in highschool. Likes PE, art, languages and history.

Occupation: Student. Part time job at Carolina’s parents’ farm. Helps his mom to make custom flower pots for the local flower shop owned by Ajax’s mom.

Background information: Ronan comes from a family of artisans who are determined to persevere in an age that seems to appreciate them less and less. His mother, Vera, is a ceramic artist who made quite a name for herself before settling in Elden Hollows and his dad, Lewis (Is something useful to the setting don’t know what yet, also depends on other players and DM input or wish)

Notable relatives: His uncle Benjamin Marsh is the mayor of the town

Misc./Additional information: ADHD, Has an msx bike that he rides -just- a bit too recklessly, so it’s frequently at Rusty’s shop for repairs.
Likes Bonsai trees and makes his own rather unconventional pots for them. Enjoys clay sculpting in general and is quite knowledgeable about art despite his ‘outdoorsy’ vibe so he often hangs out with Luca while each pursuing their own artistic visions and sharing feedback.
Is afraid of heights but also very determined to overcome this and it won’t deter him easily. ‘Face your Fears’ is not just a saying to him.

  • Name: Luca Thornby
  • Age: December 21, aged 19.
  • Appearance: Luca is a tall and slender young man, sitting at just under 6'0. He has olive-toned skin, which deepens in the Summer, and his curly, caramel hair has recently been styled into a burst fade mullet. He possesses taupe eyes and defined lips, with his bottom lip being slightly fuller than his top lip. It doesn't take much for him to offer his signature half-smile. He dons a scar which goes through the end of his eyebrow, a reminder of the time he jumped off the great white oak tree in the middle of the park. After his eyebrow hairs started growing back in the area, Luca decided an eyebrow slit suited him much better.
  • Personality: Luca is a naturally charismatic leader, and he has a gift for making people feel seen and appreciated, especially in group settings. He's warm and naturally draws people in with his chatter and questions. He's more intelligent than he comes across, noticing details others would miss and considering other angles when solving problems. He's loyal and makes you never question his friendship. While he's empathetic, sometimes he gets too emotionally involved and carries others' burdens, which can burn him out and make him reach his breaking point. Although he's rarely seen angry, when he explodes, it's more of a 'calm storm'. He's scarily logical and cold, which contrasts with his usual self. He feels responsibility towards the people he cares about and the town itself. Therefore, when he comes across people who avoid taking accountability in situations, he can be put off by them. There's a difference between something which is legally right and something which is morally right and/or feels right. Luca is a fan of the latter.
  • Education: Luca is taking a gap year, saving money before heading to the University of Michigan to study architecture.
  • Occupation: Full-time barista for Your Second Cup.
  • Background Information: Luca was born into a working-class family, grateful for everything his parents provided for him and his siblings. The family resided in Elden Hollows since before he was even born, and to Luca, that means something. Sure, he could always travel, maybe even move out of town and establish himself in the nearby cities like some family members did - but Elden Hollows is where it all started. The beginning of everything, and he senses that no matter where he ends up in life, all roads will lead back to his beloved town. As the eldest child, he saw it as his duty to bring money into the family so his parents could retire. He had big aspirations and, through his charisma and enthusiasm, he managed to work several part-time jobs over the years. This made him well-acquainted with the business owners, the staff and the regular customers. He still walks around town, conversing with them as if he just quit yesterday. Currently, he has found that his skill set is suited to a career in architecture. Despite getting into Cornell and being eligible for the no loan scheme, he deferred his entry to save for other aspects of living, now that the tuition and mandatory fees wouldn't be an issue. He has been working at Your Second Cup for 2 months now. At the time he was hired, Marcello wasn't looking for any baristas since his current ones weren't going anywhere, but Luca persuaded him by offering to help facilitate a deal between the coffee shop and the bakery where his mother works. His initiative and the way he communicated impressed Marcello, who thought he would be a great addition to the shop.
  • Notable Relatives:

    • Father - Isaac Thornby (construction worker).
    • Mother - Layanne Thornby (baker for Get Caked, a notable bakery known for its fresh bread, custom-made cakes and other freshly baked sweet treats. Get Caked often supplies muffins and cookies for Your Second Cup.
    • 1 younger brother (in the middle of high school) and 1 younger sister (started high school)
  • Misc./Additional Information: Wherever he is, his sketchbook is with him. He journals regularly. I'm planning on him catching a glimpse of Marcello on the night he is murdered, waving through the window, but when Marcello doesn't wave back, he passes it off as 'oh, maybe he didn't see me,' so he just takes off home, ignoring his gut feeling that something's wrong.
I'd like to DM some of you and discuss how our characters can interact (I'm looking at you, Sonderlandt Sonderlandt because I'm thinking Ronan being the mayor's nephew is the start of how Ronan gets roped in).

Name: Paige Miller

Age and Birthday: 21; December 8th

Appearance:
Paige.jpg
Personality: Stern, outspoken, worries about others but not herself.

Education: Graduated valedictorian but always has an excuse for why she hasn't gone to college.

Occupation: Waitress at the Hollow Rose bar.

Background information: Paige has always been the "Team Mom" of the friend group. When they were all children, she was the neighborhood babysitter. Even now that they are all technically adults, she still checks in on them regularly and pays frequent visits. She's more likely to be found crashing on someone's couch than she is to be found at home. When not working or visiting with friends, she can be found at the Hollow Rose hustling travelers at the billiards table. Anything to avoid her mother. She's on good terms with Frank (the owner of the bar).

Notable relatives: Mother.

Misc./Additional information: Extra character if the group is too small, or backup character if Carolina dies.

Name: Amber Reynolds

Age and Birthday: 19, July 17th

Appearance: IMG_2045.jpeg

Personality: Amber is typically the outgoing and social type, trying to make friends wherever she can. She's more than eager to learn and discover new things because frankly, she's bored of this small town. She appreciates the closeness of all of the townsfolk but all she wants to do is explore. She tends to be kind of reckless at times, so her opinions and actions are known to be taken with a grain of salt. She can be easily agitated or annoyed and will make petty remarks, but she tries to keep herself calm for most of the time.

Education: High school graduate, hasn't started college yet but would like to major in criminal justice (:

Occupation: Her mother's bookstore

Background information: Amber's mother was a stay at home mother for most of her life while her father travelled most of the year for business trips, occasionally coming home for big events or holidays. Amber is still pretty close with her father, however; they have weekly calls and text often. After her father received a large promotion, he sent Amber's mother money to support her dream of opening a book store. Business was rocky at first, but her mother is well known in the town for her cooking and baking, so everyone would pop in occasionally to support her. As Amber was looking at colleges abroad to apply to, her mother spontaneously got seriously ill and was hospitalized for weeks. Once she made a full recovery, Amber decided to stick around for a little while longer to care for her mother and make sure that she wasn't alone. She kind of despises this town, but the friends she's made and neighbors that she considers family have made it a little more bearable. Because of this, she has developed slight anger issues but can keep herself contained most of the time.

Notable relatives: Mother (Jillian)

Misc./Additional information: Occasional smoker, which usually helps her calm down. She also carries around a small clicker fidget toy to button mash when she gets overwhelmed or irritated.

[WARNING: It is highly recommended that you finish reading my prequel story thread BEFORE looking at my character sheet / IC post.
There are multiple plot twists. So, if you want to maintain suspense and avoid spoilers, please finish that thread first.]

My Prequel Story Thread:

[Content Warning / Disclaimer: Content warning for history of abuse, violence, gore, implied SA, self harm, etc. This is not intended to promote or glorify any of these things. This is also not intended to stereotype LGBT people, or anyone else, and I am just writing relevant characters for a horror / mystery setting. I am attempting to write this with what I consider to be a reasonable degree of personal sympathy.]
[OOC Note: I have left some things ambiguous for my character and their story on purpose. Whether they really committed whatever crimes or not. I personally feel like having a (reformed) villain that did many bad things, is more dramatic. But, if something makes the GM / players uncomfortable, just let me know and we can ignore that part for the main RP. I'm sorry in advance.]

Character Profile: Virginia Inocente

Name: Virginia Inocente
Also known as: The Black Virgin (c. 2017 to present)
The Pretty Girl Killer (active c. 2003 to 2007)
Role: Former Convict / Private Investigator / Part-Time Advisor for Police
Gender: Male-to-Female Transgender
(Will change from "he/him" to "she/her" pronouns based on the point in the story.)
Age: Around 28.
Occupation: Professor of Literature and Esoteric Studies
Part-Time Advisor for Police Department
Years of Service: Has been working for the police department for only a short time.
However, as a former killer, and amateur criminologist, she has some renown in the field.

Appearance / Outward Traits:
Virginia's most noticeable feature is her hair: Wavy and dark, it starts at her head, and trails down to her chest;
while also wandering offward in about every direction. Her pale brown face, framed with this dark mass, matched by often equally dark clothing, altogether conveys an ominous energy of slow doom.
Average weight and height, Virginia might be considered short for a man but tall for a woman. She has a tendency to "disappear" when you're not looking directly at her.
Virginia is disabled, suffering from multiple negative health conditions, including partial paralysis. She sometimes uses a wheelchair, but tries to walk on her own to project a "strong" image.
Virginia tends to be anxious and defensive. Virginia always assesses the ideal spot to be, in a room, to monitor others, and escape, if need be.
Virginia's fashion sense can be described as gothic, with an industrial edge. She will often be seen in a feminine black dress, paired with combat boots, and a survival knife. "Like a Nun that fought in Vietnam."
Due to her somewhat "strange" appearance, at least for modern times, if any murder happened, Virginia would be suspect number one, even for people that don't know her past history. (Ironically, when Virginia was actually an active killer, she looked more "normal"; she also used to be a boy.)
Most people, that have talked with Virginia for more than a few minutes, though, just consider her to be a funny lady, and a beloved English teacher.

Personality:
Virginia's true personality is difficult to decipher, as she has Multiple Personality Disorder.
Due to experiencing complex trauma, Virginia has many psychological difficulties.
During the time period of the crimes later attributed to Virginia, she suffered from recurrent memory loss, and believed that the events were dreams that she experienced but sometimes forgot. While for some time, Virginia was a violent and sadistic psychopath, she was always good at heart, and already reformed even before being arrested; however, police were forced to arrest her as a matter of procedure. While Virginia initially believed she was not guilty, she eventually conceded to the punishment. Since the end of her main sentence, Virginia has been a model citizen, although, hostile to law enforcement, authorities, and "powers that be".
Virginia has a naturally combattive nature, and finds it difficult to compromise. Whether this is a strength or weakness is up to interpretation.
Virginia's main strength is her intelligence. Both naturally intelligent, and, after her prison term, highly educated, she might be considered something of a "genius", which she formerly took pride in; however, she now declines this term, as she believes it to be overly egoistic. She has seen how so-called elites treat others, and she does not wish to do the same.
Virginia's main weakness is her physical body, as she is rather sickly, and prior to being treated in a hospital, was incapable of most physical labor.
Virginia's other major weakness is social skills: Virginia, as a child, was what might be considered on the autism spectrum, and lacked ability to communicate with and understand others. As an adolescent, this evolved into criminal psychopathy, as she did not feel what others did, but learned to manipulate them for advantage. However, while learning how to analyze others, Virginia learned how to empathize with them. Virginia eventually became concerned with the well-being of others, and involved herself in charity work.

Backstory:
Virginia was born into a poor family of Asian/Latino heritage; the Inocente family had the child assigned male, and initially named "Virgil" after the historical Roman author, and the fictional guide of Dante in The Inferno. The young Virgil was raised, if one could say that, by a conservative Catholic mother, and a mostly absent father. Virgil's parents being often either non-present or abusive, it fell to Virgil's older sister to actually take care of him (his sister was significantly older than him). Virgil being physically weak and sickly, perhaps due to a hormone deficiency, Virgil suffered under bullying at school. Boys would make fun of him and call him by misogynistic slurs / homophobic slurs. Virgil developed a fear of boys from these experiences. With difficulty speaking clearly or projecting himself, Virgil struggled to make friends. Virgil's older sister was one of the only people that really listened to him. Virgil became emotionally dependent on his older sister. When Virgil's older sister was hospitalized for an unknown illness, Virgil was devastated.
After that, Virgil would move into the home of his aunt, who was a doctor. Also present was Virgil's female cousin / adoptive sister (somewhat older). This new sister was nothing like the other sister. Virgil's new sister would insult his "lack of manliness", and would sometimes beat Virgil, although his sister claimed it was "only playing". Virgil's adoptive sister would also kiss Virgil, and she would even touch Virgil inappropriately. But when Virgil attempted to "return the affections", Virgil's sister would react violently ("Get off of me, you sicko!"). Virgil would develop a fear of older women.
Virgil would find refuge in reading. Virgil particularly appreciated old classic literature. Romantic and Gothic works, like the work of E. A. Poe.

After Virgil entered junior high school, he attempted to express his feelings for a few girls that were around his age, or slightly older; however, each time, he failed to communicate properly, or was rejected. Virgil perceived that he was treated with disgust, which was sometimes true, but not always. Virgil came to view girls with a combination of disgust and envy, hating them, but also wishing he (or, she) could be like them.
At the age of 13, with raging hormones, Virgil claimed his first victim. [Read prequel thread for more details.]

Many victims were to follow. The theorized attacker became known as "The Pretty Girl Killer".

The Murders of Elden Hollows
  • Name: Mahek Siddiqui
  • Age: 34
  • Birthday: October 21
  • Faceclaim/Appearance: Kriti Sanon
1750229323655.jpeg1750229370768.jpeg
  • Personality: Intelligent and eagle-eyed. Her years in her field of work have honed her ability to spot things that easily go ignored. However, the 12 years have also shaped her to be cynical of people's motives. She's not entirely trusting and readily guards crucial information until she has a reason to trust a person. Mahek has impeccable communication skills, which allow her to bring down people's walls and feel seen. Perfect for interrogations and hostage situations. She always maintains a cool front in the face of pressure and is resilient. If she hits a dead end in a case or her life, she looks for a way out. You either climb over the wall or dig a tunnel; you don't just give up. However, she can be impatient when a case is progressing slowly and takes it personally when she can't help get the gears moving. She's overworked and a perfectionist, which labels her as 'all work and no play', but beneath the Sergeant title and the insignia is a deeply empathetic woman who is determined to serve the people in her community.
  • Education: B.A. in Criminal Justice (graduating from Vermont State University). Attended the Vermont Police Academy.
  • Occupation: Sergeant at Vermont State Police (12 years of experience)

  • Background: Born into a Pakistani-American household, Mahek grew up alienated from the community in her childhood. Her school wasn't diverse, and she stuck out like a sore thumb. Her peers were somewhat nice to her in the classroom and on the playground, but never in front of their parents. She can count the number of times she was invited to a birthday party on one hand. She tried her best to fit in by bringing up common interests and sparking conversations with some jokes. She'd get a few laughs and responses, but the conversation would never surpass 5 minutes. "My mom told me I can't talk to you. Your family's weird." Besides that one comment, she didn't have any notable memories from her childhood; it was always the same. Go to school. Eat lunch alone. Come home. She wouldn't class herself as the victim of bullying, but maybe the victim of loneliness. Things got significantly better from middle school onwards as she encountered fresh faces. She still thinks about that comment from time to time, though. She couldn't comprehend how her family was deemed 'weird' when her parents ran a local accounting firm, her sister was training to be a doctor in the UK, and her younger brother got stellar grades. Growing up, Mahek performed well academically and in sports, but she never considered pursuing a particular career. Her sister was qualifying as a doctor, her brother wanted to be a lawyer, and her parents were accountants, so she was stumped on what she could bring to the family. Her parents had suggested dental school or even getting into engineering, but that didn't interest Mahek. She was always driven to solve complex problems and wanted to be a voice for others. "Maybe law, like Jahed?" Her father had advised. She respected the advocates in courtrooms, but she was craving for more action. She didn't want to read about cases; she wanted to solve them in the moment. It wasn't typical of someone from her background to join the police force, and her family wasn't disappointed in her, but they didn't congratulate her either when she finally decided on being a detective. Mahek graduated as the top student for her degree and managed to do placements with Interpol. Her family eventually warmed up to the idea of her being a police officer when she steadily moved up the ranks at Vermont State Police. She also fell in love during one of her cases, marrying the owner of the restaurant she frequently visited when she needed a quick meal in between studying files. Then came 2 children. Currently, she is 12 years into service, donning a triple chevron insignia, highlighting her rank as a Sergeant, and her goals remain clear: it's Colonel or nothing.
  • Notable connections: The police captain owes her a favour as she helped expose a drug ring that involved one of his officers. This helped get rid of one of the bad apples on the force. This was also the case which propelled her promotion, earning her the title of Sergeant.
  • Hobbies/Interests: Running. Cryptography. A regular at coffee shops (she would have loved Your Second Cup). Practices calligraphy (wants to open a business once she retires)
  • Misc/Additional Information: Can speak English, Urdu and Hindi. Her little brother couldn't pronounce her name when he was 3, so her family nickname became "Mek". Has read a file on Virginia back when she first joined the force.
