The main thread

Ishiyo was up with the sun, something that was not unusual for her. She was typically up with the sun, and up before anyone else. It was almost a habit by this point. Her tent was already packed as well and her general gear. She had a fire going and breakfast was beginning to cook as well. As she waited for the meat to start cooking, she looked up at the sky. The sky was beautiful as it slowly started to turn blue. Finally the meat was cooked. She put it to the side as she stood from where she was sitting. It was time to wake up the camp.

Walking to the the middle of the small clearing the had between the fire and tents and looked around. Ishiyo didn’t want to wake her group members from their sleep, but they had to get moving.

So taking a deep breath she started to speak. “ Wake up!!” She yelled as she looked around. “ Breakfast will be ready soon, but you all need to get up!” She added.

She was itching to get moving. They had heard rumors of the Avatar being in the northern earth kingdom, and she didn’t want to lose the trail. It was one of the only ones they had had in the last few weeks that was even worth following.

Rokuro was in a deep sleep when he heard their gracious leader yelling outside of his tent. He lifted his head from his pillow and glared in what he figured was the general direction she was standing in. He knew she couldn’t see him, but he was still going to glare. The sun was barely up, so why should he be up?

So with that thought in his mind he laid his head back down, rolled over and fell back asleep

Hotaru heard Ishiyo yell. Of corse she was up already. She was exhited. One of the moods she was usually in when they where walking around. She appeared behind her hanging upside down on a tree branch with a huge kidish smile on her face.

"Ready?! What for today?!"

She asked as she swings back and forth still hanging upside down. She had her eyes on Ishiyo for a while until she felt her mask fall from the side of her head which made her look down.

Aniku was sleeping well with a good dream but when she heard Ishiyo yell it startled her and made her spring up to a sitting position with messy hair. She rubbed her eyes and yawned. She didn't really know how much she sleapt but she woke up and that was it. And from sniffing the air, she figured that  food was ready although she didn't feel very hungry and needed some time to get togather and fully wake up.

"Didn't have to scream at me."

she said with a slight smile.

Pundarik had been sleeping peacefully beside his sky bison, Ketu, when a feminine shout rent the air. The shout wasn't as loud as an airbender, but it was enough to wake the young airbender and his partner from their slumber on the edge of the group of tents.   The sky bison let out a yawn as he lifted his head before licking the bald monk's head, the teenager letting out a giggle at the affection his friend showed him.   "Morning to you too buddy," Pundarik said to Ketu who closed his eyes as the young airbender attempted to hug the sky bison's face.    The teenager jumped to his feet, turning away from the fire as the scent of cooking meats came to him.    Being a vegetarian, the teenager didn't eat meats but did eat eggs and dairy products.  Being an air nomad, his culture frowned on eating meats and as such, he felt pity for the animals that had their lives taken away just so others could consume the flesh of others.  So, he did what he usually did, and packed up his sleeping bag before creating a small whirlwind beneath him to get onto Ketu's back and walked along the saddle to tie it to the back of the sky bison for when the group that was looking for the Avatar was ready to go.

Concealed within her tent, the southern water tribe girl was already awake and ready for the day.  Dressed within a blue tunic with slits in the sides and blue trousers with black boots, the only thing she had left to get was her waterskin pouch that lay a short distance from her.   Staring up at the ceiling of the tent, she let out a sigh and scrambled out from the sleeping bag before rolling it up and tying it to the bottom of her bag for when the small group began moving, her thoughts on her brother who had...well he'd saved her...and then told her to go on after finding out she wanted to look for the avatar and see if the person were alive.  Grabbing her boots, she pulled them on and made sure she had everything packed up, grabbed her waterskin and slipped it over her shoulder so that it rested against her left hip before leaving the tent with her things.

Walking out of the tent into the summer morning, she glanced up at the sky to see the sun wasn't even up.   She dropped her bag on the ground and looked around to see that their 'leader' was awake along with Pundarik, one of the airbenders of their group, Hotaru and Aniku.  She was the only member of the southern water tribe here but knew there was one girl from her sister tribe as well, though she had yet to make friends with anybody since joining the group a while ago.   Pundarik never ate with the group and she wondered if he ate at all...or if he did then he must eat somewhere else away from the group before joining them again.

Rumors had spread of the avatar's return among the world, reaching to the four corners of the globe and the four different nations.    Rumors that were unsettling for the Fire Lord...rumors that displeased him and trickled down to the Fire Nation military.    Unknown to the army, there was a group of people whom were searching for the avatar so they could, with the avatar's help, end the war and the greatness of the fire nation upon the other nations of the world.    The 100th company, a group of firebender and non-bender orphans that had been collected from diffferent orphanges for conscription into the army, had just sat down in the mess hall in the eastern half of the earth kingdom.  Around them were other companies who were already there or coming into the mess hall to be served food, a young infrantyman of seventeen among them.  Soon to turn eighteen, come  the beginning of Fall, Vikram had his helment off that was resting within his lap while he ate the meal given, a meal consisting of Komodo Rhino Sausages, boiled cabbage, and ginseng tea.

In the middle of his meal, the captain of the 100th company appeared and shouted for Vikram.  All talking stopped as heads turned to either Vikram or the captain.   Swallowing the bite of sausage and boiled cabbage in his mouth, the seventeen-year-old stood and grabbed his helmet before making his way down the aisle to his captain and saluting the intimdiating officer.  "Yes Captain Anshuman?" he asked as the captain returned the salute and gave a nod for the soldier to be at ease.

"Come with me.  I have a special mission for you."

For some firebenders their ferocity, their power, their ability, came from the emotion and the rage that they held inside of them. It was a power that thrived in war. There were still ties to the original source however. There was also those who were trained to use the original source. Ryuuki had the advantage of having trained from the beginning using that source, rather than needing to impress the dragons so they could show him the path. It was an internal sun that blazed in his soul that burned so long as he lived. That didn’t mean that it didn’t grow and fade however, the power flowing through each of the elements to maintain the balance.

Currently it was both growing, his power responding to the rising sun. The maximum was fading however, only by a touch as the summer gave way to fall. An event that the firebender rose each morning to witness. He stood tall, hands placed around the egg that carried the same kind of heat his soul did, despite the possibility that it may never hatch. It was the only time he removed the delicate object from its safe little nest his backpack had become. It was also only for a few moments, the bender flowing through his warmup stances in the predawn gloom while he waited for the first true rays.

Through the sunrise he let his thoughts clear, let the power flow through him. There was plenty of time for thinking later. Rumor told of a group that had gathered together to travel the world. Their goal was truly to find the avatar which wasn’t quite Ryuuki’s mission but it would allow him to accomplish the ultimate goal. It would also allow him to meet a number of people who sought peace.

Sliding the egg back into his back and securing it, he settled the bag over his shoulder. Then he turned to the creature who had been sleeping lightly beside what remained of the campfire. An eel hound, the beast was fully loaded and ready to move. It rose at a light pet of the head, leaning into him to be rubbed. Mounting, he turned the beast to meander towards the open plains, an eye on the expanse and on the sky for this rumored group.

Even when he asleep, Bina managed to be musical. The snores that were only outclassed by the massive creature he slept on rose and fell through a handful of notes, always following the cord set by Minu. Discounting the amount of noise, the scene was fairly peaceful. Minu was curled up with tail halfway covering the head. It was a position that hide a lot of the scaring, and did a fair job of hiding Bina too. Really only his arm was visible, thrown around Minu’s horn. The saddle and the adornments lay off to the side of cave they had occupied, only about a days flight from the Western Air Temple.

It was a state that the pair stayed in for quite some time. Minu was only a few weeks healed after all and they were not in a hurry to get anywhere. True Bina vaguely wanted to join up with the avatar, certainly he wanted to end the fear and distrust that ran rampant. Actually running into the group that was searching for them however, or searching for the avatar himself, would come as it came.

Ba Sing Se.

The Impenetrable City.

Truly, the Walls were a wonder to behold, especially when one was viewing it from aboard a small ferry taking them from through the safer road from the southern Earth territory to the greatest Earth city that the Nation had. The walls were a grim structure. Unyielding, steadfast and intimidating. When he was still a member of the Earth Nation’s army, the Fire Nation had failed to infiltrate Ba Sing Se, and as far as he knew, it had yet to succeed. Deserter that he is, Jinwen still held his homeland close to his heart. But his love for his home was still weak compared to the burning ambition to bring a halt to the war.

Pulling the bamboo hat downwards so the wide brim shadowed his face once more, Jinwen allowed his eyes to roam the occupants within the ferry, studying each one for potential threats. It was habit long ingrained into his psyche, and one that would stay for as long as he lived. As far as he could see, however, the others aboard were normal citizens, with the exception of a man decked in Earth Nation military garb seated all the way at the other end of the boat. So long as Jinwen kept his head down, he should be fine. He didn’t make the gruelling trek through the swamp and desert just to get caught before he entered Ba Sing Se.

Truth be told, when the deserter had heard rumours of the Avatar finally surfacing somewhere near the Northern Air Temple, he had been sceptical, brushing it off as gossip and hearsay from the mouths of hopeful citizens. He knew and personally witnessed the toil this Fire-Earth War had brought to the other lands caught in between, and understood the desperation for grasping at even the tiniest sliver of hope. He didn’t want to go on wild goose chases. But it was in the Republic City that he heard about it once more that prompted him to actually sit up and take notice. Word of people aiming to find the Avatar was also emerging here and there. Nothing too concrete that the warring Nations could pick up on and quell instantly, but it was there all the same. It comforted him on some level to know that there were others sharing his goal. However, at the same time, it also fed his paranoia, because if someone like him managed to hear about this, those hunting the Avatar would no doubt be chomping down on this lead too.

The boat came to a gentle stop at the dock, brining Jinwen out of his thoughts. Making sure he hung back until the Earth soldier was out, he kept to the tail-end of the line and made himself seem as harmless a traveller as possible. His eyepatch had to be left on, unfortunately, as a vivid scar running down someone’s face was more identifiable than a half-blind man. Tipping his hat up and plastering a bland smile on his face, Jinwen shuffled along with the others looking to enter the city. The guards posted at the one and only entrance built in the Outer Wall scrutinised each paper carefully, and lingered a little longer when it was his turn. Keeping perfectly calm, Jinwen returned the guards’ narrowed gaze with his unchanging smile, knowing that his forged papers wouldn’t give him away. He did use them once before when he ran from the army so it should work still. Unless, of course, this false identity had been compromised when he hadn’t been looking. Feigning impatience, he shifted more of his weight to his right feet, ready to strike out at the guards if something went wrong. Luckily, such drastic measures was unnecessary, for he was eventually waved through.

The large group dispersed the moment they entered the Agrarian Zone, and Jinwen tightened the cloth bag looped around his left shoulder before ambling casually down the jagged path between plots of land and small farming houses. He had only a little fund left in his pocket, which meant he had to find odd jobs within this city if he was to be able to reach the Northern Air Temple whole and healthy. Ah well, it wasn’t as if staying here a few day would get him killed or something.

Ishiyo jumped when she heard a voice behind her. She whipped her head around and saw Hotaru. Taking a deep breath once she realized that no one dangerous was behind her, she spoke.

“ We are having some pork. “ She said. “ And fruit and vegetables for those who don’t eat meat. I’m also sure i have some nuts around here, though we should save those for lunch.” She said rambling slightly. She stopped realizing that she was rambling and stopped regaining herself. She sighed watching the girl hang from her tree and sighed when her mask fell off. She was about to get it for her, when she heard Aniku yell at her.

“ If I don’t yell at you guys none of you ever wake up or get going.” She called back, walking to the food turning it so it didn’t burn. She looked over at where the airbenders were stationed at.

“ Yo, Pundarik! Am i feeding you are no?” She asked, just like she did every morning. She didn’t expect a different answer then the day before, but she felt it good to ask. She figured he would join them when he was back.

She heard a noise behind her and turned to see Nilak, one of their waterbenders, and smiled. “ Come eat. We have some food ready. Do you have a bowl?” She asked the girl.

Ishiyo looked around trying to think of who was still missing. She sighed, taking another deep breath. “ If you are not up in five, you don’t get food!” She yelled at them, hoping that would get the remaining of the group up and moving.

Rokuro opened his eyes hearing voices outside of his tent. With a deep breath he sat up and rubbed his eyes. After a moment he got out of his bed and quickly changed his clothes.

Finally he was ready to come out of his tent. He slowly left his tent and followed the scent of food to the group.

“ Morning. “ He said, softly rubbing his eyes as the sun slowly peeked at them through the trees.

hotaru~

hotaru looked at Ishiyo as her eyes widen and she took her attention from the mask to the other one. Her eyes widen almost to full extent.  Everyone seems to be waking up now. But she was starting to drool at the thought of food. Honestly, she couldbt sleep when she was hungry and that was the main reason she woke up and played around on trees. She liked being on trees for some reason. Doesn't matter where, of there is a tee she would hide in it. Probably a habit from spying on enemies. She jumped down and looked around as she saw Nilak, Aniku, Rokuro and Pundarik. Everyone of course was awake at this time. She looked at the food and quickly speeds towards it. "Wow. It looks gooooooood." She stretched out the word 'good' and stood by the fire.

she shook her head and jumped back up in he trees again. Although remembering her mask was still on the floor, she jumped down and grabbed it then she jumped back up. She looked down for a second until jumping to the highest point of the trees in the forest and looking out. She narrowed her eyes on the usual building figured in the far and shrugged. Another though came to her mind which of course was good. She couldn't run away from it until she did what she had to. Eat it. She jumped back down and everyone was pretty much at he fire now.

Aniku~

As Aniku listened to the girls comment, she rolled her eyes with a smile. She thought for a while and it was pprobably true that she wouldn't wake up.  She got herself togather and finally got in her usual uniform and made her hair in a braid again. She walked out and looked around. The team was the same as usual. She was still a little rusty from sleeping so she didn't waterbend yet. But after they got on the road she would probably have to take water anyway. Who knows maybe they will roam a desert or something. Two waterbenders should probably be enough for now. Everyone had chores to do in the group. They couldn't run away from it. As she walked out she wondered where they going to set off next.

dhe saw Nilak come out. A waterbender from a southern water tribe as she guessed. She didn't really ask if it was true, but she took her chances in believing it. There was a lot she didn't know about the group, but she was curious to know without asking around. She wasn't the type to nose around over people's business. She was more of a type that looked at  the world the way it is and not interfere with anything or anyone. Yes she was easy to talk to but she was more of a 'You have your i have mine' type of person. But she ignored the thought and just sat down on the ground.

Tightening the rope once more that secured his sleeping bag to the back of Ketu's saddle, Pundarik heard activity below him and turned to see Nilak had come out of her tent, followed shortly after by Aniku and Rokuru; Hotaru already being awake and outside with the teen airbender and their self-esteemed leader.  She shouted a question at him but, like always, Pundarik didn't answer.  Not sure why she even asked, Pundarik left at meal times to eat on his own without the scent of meat which made him a bit naseous before coming back after every meal was over, either when the group was going to set out again or were preparing to sleep.    Walking along the saddle towards Ketu's back he sat down on his sky bison's head and took the rope tied to either horn of Ketu.  "Ketu, yip yip," he said to the sky bison and Ketu beat his tail against the  ground to lift himself off the ground before rising above the tree tops and flying off over the forest.

Nilak's attention was diverted from Pundarik to hearing the sound of rustling and Rokuro came out of his tent.     Shortly after coming oout of her tent, Pundarik left the group without a word to their leader, Ishiyo answered Hotaru's question by saying what they had for breakfast along with nuts for lunch.      When Ishiyo asked her if she had a bowl and mentioned that there was food if the waterbender were hungry, Nilak opened her bag and rummaged around until she withdrew a wooden bowl and a metal fork  before closing her bag and making her way over to the fire where the food was. She wasn't sure where her brother was, she hadn't seen him since he'd killed their uncle after the unexpected visit to the earth kingdom from their tribe in the southern pole, but hoped he was okay.  However, thoughts of the food and her own hunger drove worry for her brother away.   "Morning Ishiyo," she said as she held up her fork.   "Yeah, I have a bowl," she said tiredly.  Really, she wanted nothing more than to go back to sleep but knew they couldn't stay within the camp for long with everyone possibly looking for the avatar.   "Where are we heading off to?" she asked.  @Awkwardpotato

.Firebender.

In all reality, Ryuuki hadn’t expected anything to come from this lead. The leads in the past hadn’t turned out anything after all. Not that he let it discourage him. Even traveling alone he learned the land, found small treasures and beautiful scenes.

Still, he kept glancing to the sky just in case, and around him. It was why he caught sight of the bison gliding over the forest. For a moment he let the reins slack, the eel slowing to a curious walk while Ryuuki scrubbed at his eyes to see if he was really seeing what he was seeing. Yes, it really was a flying bison, meaning that there would likely be an airbender with it. Drawing up the reins he clicked his tongue. The eel hound leapt forward, the sleek graceful gait closing the distance between the two. If Agni had decided to smile on him, this would be one of the group. If not…well, he would have finally met an airbender. He might even be able to ask if there was any temple that had been abandoned. Dragons could fly after all.

Keeping along the edge of the forest so that his view wouldn’t be blocked, Ryuuki raised his hand. His shout was oddly pitched, a tone learned from calling to the dragons who may be inclined to listen.

As Ketu flew above the forest below, the teenager airbender reached behind him and opened his bag before removing an apple and a couple carrots. Placing them beside him on the saddle he closed his bag and went back to sit on Ketus head, picking up a carrot and biting into it as he flew, not knowing that someone on the ground was watching his bison flying overhead.   Ketu didn't like being on the ground much...Pundarik figured that was because sky bison were the original airbenders...they had learned airbending from the sky bison and their ancestors from the air lion turtle until man took over the world.   He would return when the group had eaten their meat...close to when they would be getting ready to leave and possibly fly them northward to the city of Ba Sing Se if needed.  Other times he would fly on his own while the group walked, Ketu and Pundarik keeping lookout from the sky.

Ketu suddenly let out a sound as a shout came from somewhere within the forest below.  "What is it boy?" Pundarik asked.    Ketu let out a bellow and the teenager paused in his light breakfast as Ketu suddenly made for the ground, startling the young master and friend.  As Ketu descended to the edge of the forest, Pundarik was able to see an eelhound standing nearby the trees and with the eelhound an older boy...possibly a man.  The sky bison landed upon the ground and the airbender let the reins go as he looked at the one who seemed to have called him...for what purpose Pundarik wasn't sure.  "Who are you?" he questioned.   @AceofRoses

Vikram was noticably puzzled by the words of his Captain.  A mission...a job? For himself and not for someone who was probably more wiser...someone who hadn't deserted the army before? Vikram had been lucky to not be brought before the Firelord, lucky not to even be court marshaled for desertion.  He had, however, been kept on strict sentry duty for the army and forced to do the laundry and dishes for two months after being caught as punishment.    However, he didn't say anything until they had gotten to the Captain's tent and guards had been told not to let anyone in.   As the captain gestured for him to take a seat, the young soldier did so, his captain sitting across the table from him, the banner of the Fire Nation hanging from on the back wall.

"What do you know of the Avatar?" Captain Anshuman questioned.

Vikram was taken aback at the question but tried to remember what he had learned within the Fire Nation school.  "The Avatar is a male or female who has the power to control the four elements and is a threat to the Fire Nation," said Vikram.  "He or she is supposed to keep the world in balance but holds too much power for one person and can use that power to destroy nations and subjugate them to their will if they so chose."

Captain Anshuman nodded, a smile playing across his face at the answer.  This orphan had been trained well.  "There are disturbing rumors within the world...rumors that have reached the Fire Lord," said Captain Anshuman.   "These rumors speak of the Avatar being active once more...supposedly hiding out within the northern earth kingdom.  Naturally, this person cannot be found by those who would find sympathy to the cause of rebelling against the Fire Lord's gracious plans for the rest of the world.    We have no intelligence on the nation the Avatar was born into or whether the person is male or female.  That is where you come in.  You are to look for the Avatar and report back  as you can about the gender, nation and what elements the Avatar has mastered along with their location.   This will be passed along to the Fire Lord who will decide what to do with the information and tell me your next orders...whether you are to assassinate the Avatar or bring them in."

Vikram couldn't believe what he was hearing.  He was being sent out as a...as a spy?  "Captain...why have I been chosen for this mission? Why not one of the older soldiers?" he asked.

"You have been chosen because of your training and talents in battle," said Captain Anshuman, "nobody would suspect a teenger of being a spy for any army which would allow them lose their guard around you and give you information that they wouldn't give to an adult, and despite having deserted the army before, you took your punishment without complaint when you could have been rightfully thrown in prison or killed.   Will you accept the mission given and act as a spy among the rebels? You may be gone for some time, you can make up whatever lie you wish for the reason you have Fire Nation armor and will be acting for the good of the Fire Nation."

Vikram could not deny that he was surprised, and pleased, that he was being given a second chance to redeem himself.  Yet he also couldn't pass up the chance to find his little sister and see that she was taken care of and well, even if he was acting as a spy on the group they had heard was looking for the Avatar.    The soldier stood and saluted his captain whom stood also and relayed the gesture.  "I accept  my mission Captain and will do my best not to fail," said Vikram.

"Good.  You leave as soon as you pack up.  Dismissed," said Captain Anshuman and Vikram left the tent...his thoughts now on the mission he had been given.

Ishiyo heard Rokuro say good morning and smiled at him. “ Glad to see you. “ She said as she stirred the food, waiting for anyone to come and put a bowl for her to fill. When she heard Hotaru she looked at her. “ Well then i suggest you get a bowl so you can get some of it. “ She said with a shrug at the girl. Though she didn’t get to say much else as she disappeared into the trees. With a sigh Ishiyo shook her head and turned her thoughts to other matters.

Ishiyo watched as Aniku came out and sat on the ground. She raised an eyebrow. “ Would you like some food?” She asked the waterbender with a raised eyebrow. Rokuro held out his bowl for her and she poured him some.

Rokuro nodded in thanks before he went to go sit by a tree, aka the tree that Hotaru had climbed up moment before. He sat there silently slowly eating the pork, and the little bit of fruit he had gotten, savoring every bite.

Ishiyo turned towards Pundarik and his bison when she heard the, ‘Yip, Yip.’ She smiled. “ Be back in about 20 minutes, okay?!” She shouted up to the airbender, though she wasn’t sure if he heard her. No matter, he would be back after he ate. She just hoped he stayed low.

Turning her attention to Nilak as she came forward with a bowl she smiled. “ Morning Nilak. You slept well i hope. “ She said as took the bowl and filled it with some pork and various fruits for the bender. She smiled when asked where they were heading off to. “ We are heading North. There have been rumors of the avatar being sighted up there. “ She said.

Rokuro looked at their leader and raised an eyebrow. He always wondered how she got these rumors, but he never questioned. IF he was to be apart of the group he had to learn to trust them right?

Nilak nodded at the question from Ishiyo, listening quietly as she was told where they were going...northward to where the Avatar had supposedly been seen.  "Do you think that we'll be able to find the Avatar and get their help in order to stop this war?" Nilak questioned as she drew the bowl closer to her after it was filled with pork and fruits.  "What if the Avatar refuses to help us?"  @Awkwardpotato

The eelhound keep pace easily, and when the bison began to descend, slowed to a nervous pacing walk. It wasn’t a cause for alarm, or an indication of worry though. It was just a habit the creature had, Ryuuki dismounting rather than make himself motion sick. Patting the sleek hide he released the reins so that the creature could wander off as it chose and indulge in something that would relax it. It wasn’t needed in this situation after all.

A smile spreading across Ryuuki started towards the bison. He stopped close enough to be fully visible to the airbender, and to have a pretty good view of him. Bowing with the formality he was used to bestowing the master firebenders and original teachers of the art, he introduced himself as: “Ryuuki Taiyou. Wanderer, Seeker, what titles you would prefer.”

Letting his eyes wander over the bison he let his smile shift from the formal to something that was truly appreciative. It was the same kind of expression he had seen many give the dragons, at least from a distance. No hint of fear, just wonder. “May I know your name? Or perhaps if you are part of a group?”
