Hell Comes Knocking
Ezra:
Location: Inside gas station, fighting the last 2 hellhounds.

Leaving behind: Artificial Angel Artificial Angel Lakyr Lakyr
In contact with: Epiphany Epiphany

Sons of a Hellhound bitch! These things kept coming. Well, no time like the present to abandon his fellow defenders and make a run for the vehicles.

Using telekinesis to form a barrier out of debris between him and the two remaining Hellhounds (unknowingly killing one when the knocked over bleach and ammonia fell into its open mouth), Ezra scrambled back towards the door where Rhys and some others were fighting the creepy bone thing. Just as he managed to get close enough to see the skeleton monster drop.

Not bothering to help finish it, Ezra vaulted over its shoulders and ran towards a familiar redhead. Shit. There was the shadowy form of a Black Eyed Demon partway merged into her. Reaching deep into himself for the full force of his contempt for the situation (ruined sleep, having to fight, and a potential girlfriend being put in danger) and thrust it into the thing.

Location: Inside Emma's mind.
The Black Eyed Demon sneered at the soul of the Human before it, then dropped to its knee equivalents as overpowering force of will slammed into it. It will only be stunned for a few moments until it realizes the feeling isn't coming from a stronger demon and starts fighting again.

Location: Right across from Emma.
Ezra looked around for something he could use to damage the demon. He lucked out one time with a weird-looking demon ice weapon but it had melted after it risen above freezing. Spotting a wicked-looking dagger among the fallen debris, he snatched it up and stabbed it into the black mass of the black eyed demon outside Emma's body.

Nothing happened. Ezra tried again. Nothing happened. Ezra tried again. Nothing happened. Ezra tried again. Nothing happened.

Torn between helping out Emma specifically (attractiveness bias striking again) and saving himself, Ezra decided to split the difference and watch out for enemies here. At least if Emma ended up possessed he'd know it this way. And he'd scored a cool-looking dagger. Sweet.

Luci
Hell0NHighWater Hell0NHighWater Paarthurnax Paarthurnax
As the Young prophet drives her blade through the abominations flesh, the creature let out a sickening roar. Luci's eyes grew wide, along with his grin. "Lets get the fuck our of here." He hears the prophet say. But, He wasn't done with the beast. Luci walks up to the omnibus, and straddles it. Are you just going to let him get away with what he did!? MAKE SURE he's really dead. He begins furiously punching the abominations face. Left, and right, left, and right. The monsters jaw pops off, spraying blood all over his face. Alas, he does not stop. Luci keeps punching, over, and over, and over again. ITS ALL OF HIS FAULT! HE MADE YOU DO THIS TO HIM! HE TRIED TO KILL YOU FIRST! ITS YOURE RIGHT! Luci's thoughts ring throughout his head. "A-AHHHH!" Luci yells, gripping his head. He slides off the behemoth, and curls up in the fetal position next to the corpse, sobbing. "What wrong with me?! Why did I do that?" Luci whimpers out. His chest hurts, He wants the pain to stop. To just go away. Luci looks at his bloody hands, and wipes them on his pants, trying to clean them off. He... committed a sin, a cardinal sin. He...was a murderer. He failed Maria.

The blade plunged straight through that beasts heart, if it had one. It let out a silent howl before it's body fell into a limp mass of bone and cloth. Rhys took a step forward and toed the monster, keeping his gun trained at it's head just in case it lurched up and decided to attack. When the Omnibus didn't move, Rhys took the time to glance up at the prophet. The wicked little tilt to her lips faded, seeming to snap out of whatever mood had befallen her.

"Don't need to tell me twice."

Rhys turned to look at Luci, a bit of concern leaking onto his features as he watched the younger boy cradle his hand.
"Kiddo, am I going to need to teach you how to throw a punch?" He teased with a slight rueful slant to his lips, the joke however was lost by the sudden growls and screeches of more of hell's minions behind them. Rhys turned back to the body of the felled demon, watching as it's body began to cave in a dust like residue billowed into the air and in the center of the corpse's body sat a small pack, brown and a bit dusty. Leaning down, he grabbed it by the strap and slung it over his left shoulder. They would have to look at it later, right now they didn't have time--

Out of the corner of his eye he saw someone fall, a Hell hound hovering over them with the promise of death. He took a step back as something slammed past him, a stream of curses and colorful phrases falling past his lips at the sight of Ezra running out of the gas station just ahead of them. Excuse you. His gaze shifted back to Luci and Luiza, his lips pressing into a firm line as the two of them made their move out the exit. Well...Luiza was, Luci on the other hand was too busy screaming and punching the carcass of the Omnibus. Rhys crouched down beside him, looking at the kid with a mix of concern and a light amount of irritation. But he didn't want him to die because he was too stuck in his own thoughts.
"Luce. Look at me okay?" He pressed a gentle hand to the teens shoulder, waiting for him to look up before continuing.
"Luci, I need you to keep it together. Just until we make it out of here alright? Take the gas can and see if you can get some of it in the truck." He paused for a second as he stood and handed over the container. After another second he looked at the prophet with the seriously cool sword.

"Watch him. I'll follow you in a bit." Without waiting for their protests, Rhys turned back into the fray.

This was stupid.

The exit was right there.

But damn him and his white knight bullshit. He just couldn't find it in him to leave someone behind. Rhys sprinted towards the front of the store, the soles of his shoes slid against something slick causing him to skid forward across the tiles. He tried not to think about what that was. The hell hound was baring down on the silver haired witch, preparing to tare out her delicate throat. Rhys raised his gun, that blue fire curling around the weapon as the bullet discharged. The hound flew off her, and Rhys was there a millisecond later offering his hand to the witch. Azure eyes glowed in the darkness, a light the thrummed under his skin and illuminated his veins in brilliant white. He didn't look human just then, there was an expression less look to him as if he had been carved from the finest stone. As soon as she took his hand, he pulled her to his feet. Rhys looked down at the witch, not looking at the revenants that began to circle around.

"Grab what you can and go. Now."
There was no room for argument.

A revenant lunged just as Rhys turned, palm resting against the dead's head and watching in satisfaction as it burned from the inside out.
''Finish that son of a bitch! and let's loot some libraries!"

He knew that voice. Recognition sparked something inside him that was warring with the feeling of absence that had settled inside him. Rhys didn't understand what was happening, it was like he didn't have control of the way he moved, of how things burned at his touch. It was as if he were a puppet in his own body.
Heavy foot fells reached his ears and it took him a second to realize that it was him, he was the one moving towards the monster that had been brought down by a huntress and afflicted. The giant looked up and bellowed, something loud and incomprehensible to his ears and yet, he smiled.

"The more you struggle, the better the show is. So by all means, hellion, scream, after all Justice has never come without a little pain."
The beast let out a loud almost blood curdling roar, clutching at the fabric over his head.
Something was wrong.
He shouldn't have been able to do that.
Relax, child. I am not here to hurt you.

Rhys stopped moving. That voice. It was his own, but it wasn't and he couldn't be completely sure of what was happening. Only that he was a passenger when he should be the driver.
He watched the mass of revenants swarm in, like disgusting flies drawn to honey.
At this rate, Nik and Alaska would not only be cut off from the exit, but they would be overwhelmed.
You can't save everyone, child.
Rhys narrowed his eyes on where Nik was fighting, a frown forming on his face that was much more akin to his normal facial expression. He might not be able to, but he could sure as fuck save them. A power he didn't know he had pulsed at his fingertips and Rhys briefly wondered if this is what it would feel like when his soul was no longer his own.

In the darkness of the store, two eyes appeared, glowing like miniature suns.

Beneath the two glowing blue eyes, appeared a grin that split the man's face with it's rows of straight impossibly white teeth.

Fire sparked at his fingertips, small flames jumping in the air as if dancing to a tune.

He brought two fingers to his mouth and blew, a sharp whistle rang crisp in the air, catching the attention of a majority of the revenants. Their black eyes gazed at him with that hallow blood lust. They started towards him, changing targets, but were too slow. Rhys was already there, a wave of holy fire blazing behind him. He used his knife to weave in and out, the scent of burning flesh only seemed to spur the divine on and within minutes he had cut a clean path right to the Axeman. It growled, low in it's throat, and Rhys tilted his head to the side as if studying it. He held the knife in his left hand, twisting it in the firelight as if it could slice up the rays, his expression exaggerated by the dark shadows around his eyes. In the flicker of flame there was a shadow that spread behind him, for a moment it looked as if the blessed man had sprouted wings and then they were gone. A coincidence that could have been written off as a trick of the light.

Rhys raised his right hand and placed it on the Axeman's head. The cloth was coarse, and smoke sizzled from where his skin touched the tainted entity. A white light flared are the Axeman's head reared back, a scream lodged in it's throat as it too was incinerated from the inside out.

He pulled his hand away, the palm red and throbbing. The whole room seemed to stop, a hell hound growled and Rhys turned his head to the noise. Somewhere in the store that same beast let out a whimper of pain. Turning on the heels of his boots, he started walking back towards the back exit, glowing azure eyes lingering on Nik as he moved towards him. The revenant that had inched closer took a step back as if thrown off by his presence. Rhys smiled and turned to look at the afflicted man. There was a gentleness to his expression that offset the bloodthirsty look in his blazing blues.

"Now would be the time to run."
He looked at Alaska and made a short nod towards the exit, the power inside him flickered as if something was starting to leave. He didn't have a lot of time. The calmness that had previously settled over him turned into panic and the fires that licked at his hands and shone in his eyes receded.

Rhys stood in the center of carnage, holy fire blazing around them. He blinked, turning back towards the duo with a bit of a shocked expression. A vampire hissed, stepping forward, it's white eyes glaring directly at Rhys. He took half a step back, grasping onto Nik's arm. "We should really start running now!
With that he began sprinting towards the exit, using his free hand to pull at Alaska as he passed in case she hadn't gotten the memo to get the fuck out.

As Alaska started talking, Nik started counting the breaths he was taking, in and out. He held his breath when he could, to the count of five, and then he'd exhale. He forged ahead, but burdened himself to strike more slowly, move with more deliberate actions, instead of erratic and kinetic as they usually were—a man on a tether, flinging from enemy to enemy. Suspended by the unseen sin that lavished him with gifts yet wouldn't take his hand, and instead, drove him to madness for it.

That was the hardest part. His wicked smiles held a lonely heart, and that was very probably case for why he had been assailed by the denizens of brimstone and persuaded to follow the shade. He could possibly be anyone's if they'd just make the effort, and the one making the most effort was the side that had razed the earth to the ground, and yet it was still not enough.

His cup didn't runneth over with what he needed, it was being boiled within his own hands as he was forced to hold it, evaporating what purity was left, to scald his skin. What a harrowing cruelty to give a man who did nothing but love a woman, the child within, and a handful of the best friends anyone could ask for, ever.

Bringing himself back down to earth meant slowing his actions, taking in more oxygen, and listening to every single word she said, even if he couldn't offer that many in return. She fought beside him, she spoke, he struck a hellhound sideways through the head, stepped back, like a careful, careful dance. Weaving between enemies together, her words making music and markers of the air, that he'd pinpoint and cling to.

He couldn't waiver. As though one wrong step in any direction, too quickly, with too much vigor, and too much passion, would cause the levy to break. He felt like a tourist in his own waking dream, outside of himself, detached, as he fought alongside a woman he'd be honored to call a friend. She was going the extra mile, even if she didn't understand it, she was helping to save his life. Not through the fighting, not through their shared goal of survival with feet, and fists, weapons and strikes.

But in simply speaking whatever came to her mind, whatever fell from her lips, to keep the blond from completely falling over the edge and into the many red-tipped hands that clutched at him within the ether. Spindling from the black that he was sure he could actually smell, in sulfur and crags of smoke.

Come, because this is too hard now, and you've fought for too long, and this is Euphoria.

But that was clipped away with a sentence, by the State he honored diligently with protection and camaraderie. If he made it out, humanity as intact as possible, he owed her something fierce.

''I want to watch old movies, to listen to good bands again!. You know the best rock bands lived around 80 years ago? Almost a century and i still listen to their songs!'' He cracked a grin, it broke away the black stain that was painting itself across his mind, scraped it back like a palette knife on raw canvas.

"That would be...the best," he managed that sentence as best he could, it suffered in his throat. Nik let his dark blue eyes trail over the scenes of chaos before him, then land on Alaska, her mouth still moving, but he almost couldn't make out the words anymore. But as she was rambling so intently, they snatched him back again, and a hellhound reared nearer, pulled back its ears and spit out an inhuman howl, ready to fight the man between two worlds.

He managed to send it flying, but he was growing slower. Because he had to still his heart.

''I want to go to a library! A big ass library with real old books that smell like vanilla! You know what occurred to me? People don't care about books during the apocalypse! Who'd steal books? Let's go loot a library!''

And now, now she was crying. That much he saw, he started to recognize...God those tears. He had to be stronger than this, but this group of survivors had caught him at the end of his grace, he was already running on the fumes of his soul now, but he...wanted to at least make another lap around the lake. With his head on a shoulder, some anachronistic song playing against the light that filtered through trees, eyes closed, a pleasant smile. Something warm. Like when you cruise around on vacation, sleep making your head heavy, and the light hitting your closed eyes, painting skin-red and then yellow, yellow, gray, red. When the trees obscured the lemon-yellow sun from your face, the colors changed.

He just wanted another one of those, whatever they were called. Happy days.

''Finish that son of a bitch! and let's loot some libraries!"

He couldn't make this move, and she didn't know that.

And instead, someone else did.

Someone else swept in there with brilliant blue eyes and a body filled to the brim with immaculate, blazing vengeance against the stain and sin against the land. A stain made manifest by the Revenants, the Vampires, the Black Eyed Demons, the hellhounds, and everything in between. It fell off of him in waves of heat and light that Nik could very specifically feel, like vines through the fallow, and as he witnessed whatever power and glory that had blessed their fearless leader, he wondered.

Wondered.

As his eyes went glassy, and he was left awestruck at the careful placement of a winged shadow, at the holy fire brimming behind, at the way the dogs of hell and the Revenants shirked back, he wondered.

If, perhaps—he thought, as he tilted his head to the side, his blades slack in his hands—Rhys' own cup was overflowing.

And if he'd be drowned in the laced fauna of sage, in the rose water, of God's blessed golden chalice.

In antitheses of the scruffy blond who was now being urged forward by that very same blessed hand that wielded such incomprehensible glory of varying degrees. That hand sent pain through his arm, a crackling of electric heaven on high through the cuts he had received, and in some parts, lacerations. Strong fingered, writhing pulses of purity, what did this all mean? Nik affixed his blades to his belt, mind still in a blur, the edges of his vision red and watercolored.

Why were there so many assholes crawling up from the muck of the great black and burning void of shit? Why were they so relentless?

He ran on, as told, but as he ran, his gaze turned to Rhys, and his eyes said everything all at once. All those questions, absolutely no answers.

For what was happening to him, the afflicted man who had done nothing but good in all his days to earn this badge of filth, for why they were being pounded down upon so hard, for the questions about beloved Diana's painted ghost across these survivors he had only recently met, for the questions about rose water, and cups, and what this all meant.

Trying to find the answers to all this in the piercing blue eyes of a stranger, and finding nothing. The water spilled from just one of Nik's eyes, in a line of titantium white suspended in linseed oil, and he ran, and he looked at Alaska, and his heart worried for the tears she had given. And all these gifts, so precarious, so easily destroyed, so easily removed, and ripped apart, bled and broken, and they were safe now he hoped, he said nothing.

Because he couldn't speak fast enough to float the flowers of his thoughts from his throat to his tongue, and past his teeth. And if they had stopped running at some point, he'd find himself smoking, not speaking. And if they got far enough away, he'd have his arms wrapped across his chest, a far-away look on his eyes.

And if asked how he was doing, he'd toss a grin, wide, and bright, and his dark blue eyes would look gray like dark rain clouds, because he didn't know how to answer that question right now.

He...saved her.

Watching the bullet rip through the creature above her, she felt more shock than ever in her life.
She expected death.
A short moment of pain then an eternity of darkness.
She got life,
And two eyes the color of glass at twilight looking back at her.
At that moment, she felt blessed.
She felt a stirring in her heart so profound in its depth that it almost hurt.
Almost.
Instead it was a warmth, on the razors edge of burning, that settled comfortably, and spurned her forwards to follow him,
Him, her wonderful him.
He had saved her, after she went into his mind, after she stupidly put that snake back on him, after she shamelessly barred herself in the gas station, after it all.
And he saved her.
She couldn’t wrap her head around why.
Was it the affliction, the ‘blessing’ as they called it that would eventually consume him?
She liked to think otherwise.
As her bare feet pounded the tile, then the icy cement, then the snow, she could think only of him.
_____________________________________________

“Christian?”
She got no reply for a moment, yet she didn’t worry, she knew he was probably napping. Regular humans got tired so quickly at night. They needed caffeine or something. She’d brought him a coffee. Dark roast, one cream, no sugar, just how he liked it. Usually she made him cold brew every Sunday, so he’d have it for the week.
Their apartment was small, dark, and littered with her bits and bobbles for spells and what not. She had an array of potted flowers, all night blooming, so their apartment always smelled like jasmine and lilies, yet as she stepped into the living room, that isn’t what she smelled.
She smelled death.
Her blood ran cold.
He was there, on the floor by the dark oak coffee table. He was alive, but the smell of death enveloped him like an overpowering cologne.
The coffee burned her legs as she dropped it. The stains would never come out of the carpet.
She knelt by his side, sobbing, screaming for hours and hours.
There was so much blood.
His eyes were gone, those beautiful eyes, the shade of glass at twilight, plucked out of his head with a precision she couldn’t fathom.
He was losing too much blood.
She could see his eyes, sitting on the carpet no more than a foot away.
They were watching her.
They watched silently as he died,
As she screamed,
As she cursed God, Satan, and whoever else would listen.
Whoever else would let this happen.
She had called the paramedics but they never came.
They wouldn’t come to that side of town.
No one came to get the body, either.
She had to wrap him up, in that purple blanket she’d knitted him. She didn’t want to put him in that, but their linens were white, and the blood would stain them.
Like the carpet.
So she wrapped him in the purple blanket.
It had been her Christmas gift to him; she didn’t celebrate it, but he made her one year, and they’d chopped down a tree so big it wouldn’t fit inside. So they’d used an extension cord, lights, dollar store ornaments, and had Christmas on the fire escape. They hung stockings on the ladder. He nearly got frostbite, and she sat in the hot bath with him for three hours until he was warm again. They slept under that blanket that night, and he’d hummed merry Christmas against her shoulder, and they’d laughed, until rolled over and gave him a kiss that made him stop.

She delivered him to the funeral home, and they glared at her, the witch so obviously different, dark.
She wasn’t family, or his spouse, so she wasn’t permitted any further. They took him away, and she couldn’t even fucking bury him.
They gave her the ring, at least, the one in his pocket.
He had seemed nervous the night before, now she knew why. He was never good at asking big questions like ‘do you want to move in?’ Or ‘will you go out with me?’
They said sorry, at least, and gave her his ring. She had it on a chain, a necklace. She couldn’t wear the ring.
He hadn’t asked, she hadn’t said yes.
She would’ve said yes in a heartbeat.
They unwrapped him, and they gasped.

She closed her eyes.

She couldn’t see it again.

They accused her, and she ran.
She left their apartment, with the coffee and blood stained carpet, but she took the eyes.
She buried them in the hard soil by the Brooklyn bridge, where she’d found a cave to stay in for the time being.
She wondered where they were now,

those eyes that looked like glass at twilight.

She was becoming out of breath, and she swore the tears that ran from her eyes were freezing on her cheeks, but she needed to keep moving, or she’d be left to be consumed.
In her arms was a small bag she’d been filling from the aisles. She’d loaded it with any kind of useful thing she saw. Snacks, a lighter, some oil, coolant, water, and her dress.
She held it tightly, like she’d once held him.

HELL COMES KNOCKING: TERRA

As Terra was unconcious, he remembered scenes from his favorite video games and spells from those games. He tries to lift up his body, in a fortunate turn of events, he does wake up from his slumber. He remembers a white tonic that the old woman gave to him this morning and tries to grab it from his bag. He sees it in a waterbottle with a label that reads, 'Drink when necesarry, Only for 10 minutes!', which made Terra comfused but he drank it anyway. He felt a surge of power enter his body and stay. He realized he could create anything and cast any spell. He started with a simple Curaga, which made him felt more stronger. He saw a hellhoind and used Stopga on it, and it worked. The dog could not move but he had a big idea up his head that he would like to test out. He held his sword up high above his head and looked at every monster in the room that is currently with him. His eyes glowed a bright white and shouted, "Light", which made a bunch of star shaped bullets appear and fire at the monsters, he was a machine gun of light. He then suddenly said, "Malevolous Winds!", which made a tornado appear and swoop up the hellhounds and then tore their body apart. As Terra was having fun with his newly found powers, he realized that he was running out of time and decided to cast haste on himself and ran as fast as he could ouside the gas station and reached the cars where he cast Group Curaga and stayed there silently, as the gas station was in complete chaos.

James
Artificial Angel Artificial Angel

At some point the other man had left his side, seemingly running out the back door. James couldn't hold that against him, it wasn't getting any better in there. But he couldn't leave yet, not as long as others were still fighting. He had to keep some monsters off their backs. He also had to get the bearer of light out, who had healed his arm. He looked towards the entrance where more monsters kept swarming in and then into the room to see the big thing with the axe. They had to kill it or stop it if they wanted to get out and the ones fighting it couldn't use other beasts annoying them. So he stepped in front of the entrance, slicing down one revenant as he goes and then tries to stop as many things coming his way as he could. He was stabbing, slicing, dodging, kicking and punching a storm of enemies bringing down as possible. It looked like pure chaos, but there was a sense to every single move he made. He heard how the big one fell to the ground and smiled. They'd need a little more time, so he kept fighting.

At one point a hellhound bit into his leg, forcing him down to one knee. In return, he thrust his blade into the side of its throat, punched it off his leg and slashed its head off. He got back up again and continued his dance with the blade and the legions of hell. Okay, not the legions of hell but their dogs and some of the lower-class soldiers. He saw a fire out of the corner of his eyes that was different than the hellhounds weak flames. He looked towards the source of it just to see Rhys with flaming fingertips, whistling. James watched in astonishment as the man cut his way through revenants and hellhounds, flames blazing behind him.

That was the moment he had waited for. James turned towards his backpack and the unconscious man, just to notice that he wasn't unconscious anymore. Instead, he was getting to his feet faintly glowing. "And I thought I'd have to carry you out of-" his words faltered as the man began casting spells. James grabbed his backpack and flung it over a shoulder, then turned towards the room to see piles of dead monsters, a fire quickly spreading and people, including Rhys and Nik, running out the door. He wanted to say something about getting the hell out there, but the spellcasting wielder of light already started to run outside with insane speed. James hurried after quickly, kicking a more than half dead revenant into the face as it tried to grab his ankle.

HELL COMES KNOCKING

Nik seamed as if he was in a trance, as if her words barely reached him. The creature now was struggling more and she couldn't hold him any longer. She still clutched the chain tightly pulling scratching and cutting the palms of her hands as the creature tugged back on it.

"The more you struggle, the better the show is. So by all means, hellion, scream, after all Justice has never come without a little pain." Rhys's voice came shattering as he got closer, his eyes now almost seemed as if they lit the entire store. The whistle that followed.....the revenants..... Rhys's hand on the creature's head..... and the humbling light that followed. That wasn't Rhys anymore.

''we should really get out now She was pulled up by him and ran in silence still awestruck. She was in the middle, running between two opposites, light at it's extreme edge, and the deepest pit of darkness. Blue eyes found their way to Alaska's worried ones, they locked for a moment as they existed the gas station, it was then that she knew she couldn't leave that group anymore, the pain in both faces reflected something bigger than herself, but she was willing to give her soul away for them, the whole fucked up group.
That's what happens when you search for friends in the apocalypse...You end up destroying your heart piece by piece.

❖ HELL COMES KNOCKING ❖

Come on! She had to get up! Her head hurt like crazy. Her body felt as if she'd just expanded and been used to channel a torrent of... of power. There was a fresh emptiness in her soul, and her limbs were heavy as lead. Reverie opened her eyes but only saw brilliant sparks of light and the ground rolling before her; like she was on a cruise ship. She nearly hurled. Reverie quickly shut her eyes again in an effort to stave off the retching. Her brain felt like it was floating on a storm-tossed ocean inside her head. Oh, why did she come back? Now she'd die a fool. A callow little girl who thought that she could gain some measure of abstract virtue by-

"I have you, dear," strong arms helped her up, and the brunette instinctively clutched at her savior. Was this another of her dreams? She smelled a comforting warmth, it reminded her of a meadow under a bright spring sunshine on a breezy morning. A source of heat that purified the air of taint, but did not scorch. One that healed and mollified her befuddled and shocked mind. Her eyes fluttered open on heavy lids. Pale alabaster skin and crimson locks. Mama...

"Emma?" She could only utter weakly, her eyes wide in astonishment at the presence of a familiar face and one that invoked such an inexplicable feeling of familiarity no less. But her mere touch seemed to lend the young woman a strength such as she had never known; or perhaps it stood in stark contrast to the emptiness within her. She struggled to her feet, with the help of the redhead. "Back to the truck," Emma was urging her. "No... wait, there's a-" Her warning came too late. She heard a disembodied voice snarl in contempt, and then Emma staggered releasing her hold on Reverie. The brunette let out a startled cry trying to reach to steady the one who'd only just saved her, by her own knees buckled and she fell to her side, barely stopping herself from face-planting the concrete. The next thing she knew, brilliant white light flared into life, so bright they streaked out from between the threads of Emma's coat. Her eyes burned with a blessed fire leaving her own mouth agape. She knew then that celestial blood fought for control on a field that was beyond her.

Then a dark form burst from the back door of the station, and she recognized the one who was called Ezra. He paused in the doorway for a moment, and then suddenly charged at the two of them. Reverie's initial surprise changed into horror in a flash of a second when she felt the man draw on his taint. The darkening of the atmosphere was palpable. His focus was set in the direction of Emma and the White Witch realized what he was about to do. The powers of a demon couldn't harm a demon that way, not when they battled within the blessed. It made sense. This was beyond the physical, even beyond the emotional. He would only harm her. Or worse, make the black-eyed abomination stronger.

"NO DON'T-!" She'd thrust herself at Emma with a strength she didn't know she had, protectively enfolding the embattled blessed in her own embrace. Even as she felt the afflicted's power descend upon them, her lips chanted an incantation she never knew she knew. It came from inside her, a warm golden hue that shimmered and clung to their skin. She'd take whatever pain was directed for her savior on herself. And it was excruciating. Her every nerve was on fire and she thought she might cry out. Darkness crept unwittingly into her heart, and she felt the beginnings of a bottomless despair. Her eyes watered with tears, but as soon as it happened, it passed. The golden sheen dimmed for a few agonizing moments but held. Somehow somewhere, she knew sapphire eyes looked on her with pride. She clutched the woman even more tightly to herself, lending whatever thoughts and will she had to the blessed, it was all she knew to give. Dimly she was aware that Ezra had returned miming some stabbing motion at the two of them, but she was long past caring.

[div class=Example2_3]Hell Comes Knocking[/div]
Inside her mind, Emma was buffeted by the vying forces. Hellwrought power wielded by Ezra collided with the golden purity of Reverie's own spirit, and the fireworks they created within the Blessed only accented the battle within.

"One of them," the Demon sneered. Twin infinite voids made up its eyes and the semblance of self it retained were anchored to those points of oblivion. And yet, here, on this field, Emma felt it for what it was. Human. Once it had been, anyway. Corruption had twisted it, wrung the humanity from it like water from a towel until all that was left was bone-dry dust that held the shape of something once human. And yet no corruption could entirely erase what it'd been either. Would that it had. The horror of the monster would have been more manageable if Emma hadn't known this void that wanted to claim her had once had parents, perhaps a spouse or child. Or might even be a child.

"I'm not 'them', I'm me," Emma said, feeling the demon envelop her soul, even as the substance of her grew brighter as it grew darker.

"Only for now. Only for a moment. The more you resist me, the more you become something else. Something that was never Emma Treadstone."

"Is that supposed to scare me?"

The void hesitated. It was a master of doubt and despair, an expert in knowing exactly what words to sink in to its prey, to weaken the resolve of its victims so it could overwhelm them. But this time, its barbs only strengthened Emma's determination. Within and without, Emma smiled slightly as she opened her heart to the black-eyed demon, not exposing a vulnerability but unleashing the real ferocity that lay inside.

"I murdered people, demon. I burned churches and homes, I wrought suffering and carnage and I thought it a virtue to kill anyone who thought that righteousness existed. God's grace hasn't just changed me, it's saved me. Emma Treadstone was a wicked monster, like you. Now, I'm something better. And it's not the power God has given me, not these marks on my skin to show God's plan for me. It's His mercy, monster. That's what makes me better than you, and better than me. If the price for salvation is my old life, God can have it! As He can have you. You picked the wrong side."

And with that, holy light ignited across the length and breadth of Emma's soul. The black-eyed demon, its essence, tried to release the claws it'd sunk into that soul but Reverie's ward against demonic energy not only repulsed the threat from without but contained the threat within. Pinned between the golden light of mortality and the white holocaust of Emma's nature, it screamed in a final defiant fury before bursting apart in the heat of holiness.

A moment later, the tattoos across Emma's skin faded from their furious white blaze to a mere marker upon her skin. Blue eyes opened and her arms tightened around the waist of the woman embracing her. "Thank you," she whispered to Reverie. "For saving me." The warmth of Emma became brisk, even a bit bracing this late at night, and something in her touch communicated how deep her appreciation ran.

Emma's eyes drifted up to meet Ezra's, noting the afflicted man's presence and the weapon he wielded, as well as the defensive nature of his posture. A smile brightened her face. "And thank you too," she said, honest gratitude that a man bearing such corruption still had the humanity to put someone else before himself.

Only an hour ago the blackness was absolute, nautre's twelve hour affliction, but now the mists that rolled across the asphalt was visible, silvery. Against this backdrop the various buildings were silhouettes, still as an oil painting and darker than ravens. Come mid-morning those infernal shadows would slip away to the abyss that they had crawled out of.

His boots kissed the ground. A steady pulse, like a heartbeat, thundering across the earth and carrying him towards the salvation of the truck. Now that he was out of the gas station he could see the rest of the group, spread out across the parking lot, in various stages of escape. Rhys prayed that Luiza and Luci had filled the truck up, otherwise this situation might get a bit trickier.
A revenant grabbed at his arm, fingers digging into the wound on his shoulder. His complexion turned ashen as the pain vigorously ignited each one of his nerves. In a movement of surprising agility, he placed a hand on the Revenant's face and watched as that familiar bust of white light combusted behind it's eyes. The body fell unceremoniously to the ground.

Shortage of breath was the first sign. He was breathing but the air just wouldn't go in, like his lungs were surrounded by metal bands. Then cames the rising panic, the dizzy feeling like he had gone one too many rounds on a carousel. The exertion of running brought on more breathlessness, as if the very air around him was devoid of oxygen. His ribs heave up and down but no benefit comes. Still, he didn't slow even as flecks of black began to cloud his vision.

Sweat streamed down the side of his face, painting his skin in an uncomfortably clammy texture.
Everything became fuzzy; then he saw nothing at all.

Rhys must have made a noise, or slowed, because he barely made out the figure in front of him turning around.

"I....think...I..."

His next step faltered, body toppling over as he was unable to correct his trajectory.

His consciousness was floating through an empty space filled with a thick static. Throughout the inky space his heartbeats pounded loudly, echoing in his ears, alongside fading voices.
Feeling in his body drained away until finally, all was black...

tumblr_oqtt7zfTN11tjhwyao1_540.gif

His head rested against something that smelled like ash and sweat with a touch of something more acidic. Whatever it was, it wasn't very stable and kept jostling around. He shifted his head, trying to get more comfortable, but it just wasn't happening. A soft yellow glow filtered in from behind his eyelids, painting the universe in a soft pink glow. His left eye creaked open, followed by the right, and he found himself staring at an expanse road; cracked and weathered by time. In a moment of confusion he wondered if it had all been just a really strange dream.

"Monica?"

Her name was like a prayer on his lips, whispered in a sort of groggy hope. As he opened his eyes, however, he began to notice that the abandoned cars that littered the street were all too real. It was then that he remembered she was dead. She had been dead for four years now and it never seemed to get easier. Rhys sat up slowly, his left right palm attempted to rub out the kink that nagged at where his neck met his shoulder. In essence, he felt like crap. His head hurt, there was a stinging just above his right eyebrow, one of his shoulders felt wet and a glance confirmed that not only was his shirt torn but he could see the raw and ragged flesh from where that monster had clawed him.

Cornflower blue eyes dragged themselves from where he had sleepily been staring out the windshield to the thing he had been resting on. The first thing he noticed was the sharp jawline edged with scruff from a period without shaving. "Nik?" His eyebrows furrowed, expression contorting into one of confusion.

"What happened?"

They were finally out of there, revenants and vampires still on their tale. Alaska's heart beat in her chest so fast she thought it would stop. Her eyes were fixed back at the station, running like this without making sure everyone else was ok....

A knot formed in her throat as she ran towards the snowy landscape coming to a halt only when Rhys collapsed to the ground. "Rhys!'' she crouched beside him touching his torn shoulder gently. ''He's alive'' a relieved sigh left her mouth as she stood up. Alaska gave Nik a gentle look: ''Go, take him and get out of here, the truck isn't big enough, take the ones who made it out. I'll wait for the others'' She smiled gently. '' There's a police academy not very far from here, maybe we'll all meet there. And maybe.....maybe then we can loot the academy's library'' A fake smile followed, then she ran back to the station taking her hunting knife out and picking one off the ground.

[RELOCATION]
A worn out station wagon was parked down the road. Alaska hopped in and tried to hot wire it. After four failed attempts the car finally came back to life,it didn't have much gas but the young hunter hoped it'll make it. ''Come on baby girl! Alaska drove to the station and pressed the horn with all her might hoping that someone...anyone of the survivors would get out of that station and hop in. She was making a lot of noise, attracting revenants and hell hounds, but she didn't care. It was the only thing she could do for these people and she was willing to die -no matter how silly it sounded-for it

They had been running as fast as humanly possible. Many on weak legs, many torn and cut by the battle they had just endured.

He made his way away from the flames, away from the combustion that the fires had rought, like holy hell on earth, downing the gas station into cinders and smoke. The charred remains gasping into the air, swimming in the yellowing sky, a marker of a brutal war. Like a fingerprint on the very air itself, it seemed to linger in the sky like a smudge on a pane of glass.

Nik was trying to follow Alaska's words when Rhys more or less keeled over, but he was still reeling from all this. Still messed up, mixed up, and left in that hollow space between logic, reason, and the very heavy understanding that he was very soon not going to be himself.

It hadn't been like a kiss, this darkness. It had been like a starvation. An addiction that kept cloying and pulling, it felt good in the moment, and when the high was gone, he felt worse and worse, each time. And the next time, he was sure it would be his last. The last time he breathed air as himself. God, what a mess this was.

''Go, take him and get out of here, the truck isn't big enough, take the ones who made it out. I'll wait for the others''
"Got it," he couldn't give her anything else right now, and he hoped she'd understand. Instead, he just followed her instructions, to the letter.

''There's a police academy not very far from here, maybe we'll all meet there. And maybe.....maybe then we can loot the academy's library'' She was trying her best, and he was suffering to match her resolve. He gave her a nod, and a small murmur, and a warm smile...with pained, dark eyes. Unreadable except for how removed he was from his own gaze.

Before Nik took on the responsibility of driving the truck towards God-knows-where, he had stopped and very abruptly pulled Alaska into a hug, possibly too tight, still saying nothing, and set her free after a handful of his heartbeats passed by between their chests. He didn't explain himself, he couldn't right now, except that he wanted her to understand what she had done for him.

Just by talking, by keeping his mind occupied, by sharing what she was thinking...that war hadn't ended up like how he was sure it would've. At least, for him, that is. He was right there, the abyss was right there, and she pulled him out of it. Rhys had delivered the final blow to the juggernaut, something he couldn't do on his own at that moment. He had been saved by these two, very deliberately.

He didn't know how to thank them, just yet. But he'd try. This event had softened his edges a bit, the rough corners that were like his wild grins and scathing remarks. At least for the time being, that is.

⛧⛧
They were on the road, Nik's hands on the wheel, Terra and Haruka in the backseat, and the glow of the sun scraped through alley-ways, past snapped down trees, and into his face. He squinted, snow kissed past them, and he drove without saying one solitary word. He was still having trouble articulating everything, usually he always had some snot-nosed response to everything. He always had the last word. Always. This time was different.

The wounds on his arms ached, he knew he'd have to attend to them, and his shirt was muddied with the blood of that juggernaut. He still had a smear of the stuff on his face, he hadn't bothered to clean it off. And now Rhys was leaning his head on his shoulder, the thrum of his dull, but audible snore, like a consistent engine keeping Nik focused. A constant noise he was enjoying listening to, actually.

When he caught sight of a station wagon in his rear view, he had slowed so they could match speeds. He noted the motorcycles, and suffered a small smile. It was getting easier to smile again.

Part for part, he stayed near Alaska's station wagon, making sure they were together. He kept the motorcyclists in view, and did his part when Rhys could not. Even without explaining much, he felt like he had done a good job. They all had. They were now a good distance away from the war they had just fought, and fought bravely. And yet Nik still didn't understand why it had even happened in the first place.

"Monica?" Nik raised his brow, noticing Rhys was awake, and opened his mouth to speak, but instead he just glanced for a bit longer than necessary. The lemon-yellow sun was peaking through silhouettes that framed the cracked and weathered road, fading over the side of Nik's face. It was cold out, the air was dry, but the inside of their vehicle was thankfully a bit warmer thanks to all the body heat.

"Have a nice nap, Princess?" he said, trying his best to crack a cheeky grin. He didn't know if it was working, but he was still trying, and that had to count for something. That had to mean his spark wasn't yet so very dim that he couldn't throw their fearless leader some kind of sass, or at least attempt it.

"What happened?"

"Well, we made it out. Obviously...one member short." The silence between that sentence and the next was deafening, on his part, at least.

"Alaska nabbed another vehicle, see?" Nik pointed out the window and gave Rhys a warming smile. He was feeling a bit more solid now, which was good. He needed to stop the raw ache in his soul. Broody wasn't a very good look on the part-time devil, at least, he didn't think it was.

"We also have two amazing amazons kicking asphalt on motorcycles—motorcycles are more my style, to be honest—but I was playing baby-sitter while you've been unconscious, so," he said with a playful half-smile, the corner of his mouth turning up. The sun petered in, obnoxiously bright, he drove on, he kept note of where everyone else was. He wished he had some fucking sunglasses.

"....you okay?"

Sleep still pulled at him like an insistent lover, begging him to stay in her sweet embrace for just a few more moments. He squinted past the light, leaning back in the dark leather seat partly hoping that it would swallow him whole. In a nutshell, it felt like he had gone out on one of his famous Saturday Night excursions; the time when he drank too much, had a laugh with other cadets in the academy, hit on beautiful people, and always woke up in someone else's bed the next morning. Those days were such a vivid recollection that the water colored images of his memory floated in and out of focus.

God. Why did his head hurt so much?

He took a slow inhale, letting his lungs fill up with so much oxygen that he felt like they might burst just before they reached that point, however, he exhaled. A breath long and slow and it was like he let go of something that had been pent up in his very soul. Rhys turned his blue gaze to Nik, watching the older man in silence for a moment. He had never really taken the time to look, the time to see the man beside him. Initially he had only seen the affliction, that revolting taint that had his own corruption stirring in unease. But Nik, he realized, had the kind of face that stopped you in your tracks. His tousled dirty blond hair shone with lighter shades of sunflower yellow as the morning light illuminated him --it made him seem as if he were being cast in some sort of holy light and the irony of that thought was not lost on the ex-cop. It had been too dark to get a good look at them before, but Nik's eyes were seriously blue. Almost sickeningly blue --full on Prince Charming, dark sapphire, perfect, midnight sky blue. Someone should really name a crayon after the guy.

His train of thought derailed, almost missing the question he asked. Rhys gave him a half-hearted scowl, placing his elbow on the window ledge and sticking his cheek against his knuckles almost in full pout.

"Yes, I did."

His words were clipped and he waited a heartbeat, the irritation of the nickname fading as he realized there wasn't a sharpness to the quasi-devil's words. Rhys didn't know if it was fatigue or something else but he didn't like the half-assed tilt to his lips.

Rhys' heart sank further, his gaze landing in his lap. It was just another person who had relied on him, one he had let down, and in a way had been helpless to save. His jaw ticked, fists clenching around the worn grey fabric of his jeans. He wanted to punch something. He wanted to scream. He wanted.....he wanted so many unobtainable things. His body went rigid, watching as the blood painted his fingers: wet and gooey and cold. His heart thudded in his ears. He didn't hear what Nik said, too focused on the blood. There was so much of it. His hands started to shake slightly, a tremor that he never had been able to control after Monica....

"....you okay?

Rhys blinked. The blood was gone. He felt like he was going to pass out again but he cracked a weak smirk anyway. "Peachy."

It was a lie.
Since when were the blessed allowed to lie?

He turned his gaze back to the window, hands now clasped together to keep them from shaking. The pads of his fingers began to turn white from how hard he was clenching them together. He didn't understand why he was like this, why this power curdled his veins and manipulated his soul. It was a joke. A damned, fucking joke.

Rhys directed his attention to the rear view mirror, noting the station wagon with the vague outline of a female in the driver's seat and the two motorcycles riding her tail. They must not have been driving very long because he still recognized this place as Newark. Not that it was a small town, but he was at least thankful he wasn't snoring on Nik's shoulder for an eternity.
He leaned his head back against the seat. He could really use a fucking cigarette.

As if reminded, he fished about in his jacket for a moment before pulling out the delicate pack with the trademark red stripe.

"Here. I, uh, noticed you smoking earlier and figured you could use them more than me."

Rhys held the pack out to the man like it was some sort of offering. For what? He didn't know, but there was a comrade he didn't want to fuck up. If anyone, he would rather have the devil at his back than some bird-brain who spoke to him once every eon. Perhaps that had been his subconscious though.

"God, I really am losing it. Next thing you know I'll be walking around without pants. Bet that albino witch wouldn't mind." As soon as the thought left his shoulders began to shake, a roaring type of laughter belted out of him and he doubled over a bit, ignoring the pain as he let it flow. The laughter gave way to huffs of air. He ran a hand over his face, shaking his head. Rhys reached out to play with the knob on the radio, twisting and pulling at it as it scanned through the different frequencies.

A frown formed on his face as he gave the radio a disgruntled look. He knew that it would have been nothing but static...but still, one could hope right?
He turned it off in frustration, squinting past the light as he started looking in the compartment under the arm rest between him and Nik. "Let's see....what kinda bullshit?" He pulled out a disk with a cover of a cloudless sky and a cross on the front. "Top ten Christian Hyms." Rhys snorted.
He pressed his index finger to the mini lever at his side and watched the window roll down before he chucked it out of the moving car. He rolled it back up quickly, shivering against the frosty air that flew in.

Rhys went back to rummaging, pulling out a pair of light pink cat-eyed sunglasses. He smirked a little, "Here, Princess."
He handed the sunglasses to him with a snort before going back into the depths of that compartment. Lipstick. Some other makeup things he didn't know. And another CD. Rhys pulled this one out with careful consideration. It was blank, and the only thing on the case was some worn sharpie in loopy hand writing. He pressed his lips together before deciding 'fuck it' and slipped it into the CD player.

After wavering on the bare edge of consciousness, Rhys was now studying his face rather intently. At first this made him arch his brow again, looking at him from the corner of his eye. He wondered what the other man was thinking about, but it didn't appear to be a glare, certainly nothing in anger. Soon, Nik's half-hearted half-smile grew more catty and audacious as the seconds passed. As razor-sharp as ever, and possibly quite wicked.

Then the whitelighter gave him a rather dramatic half-scowl, humphed, nearly crafted a prima donna pout on his face, and offered a response.

"Peachy."

Nik snorted at the entire display and rolled his eyes a little bit, teasing, but the grin dropped off of his face when he caught, from the corner of his dark gaze, just how hard the other man was trying not to let his hands shake. As much as Rhys apparently thought himself a case study in hiding one's emotions, that just wasn't the case. The fight had taken a lot out of him, he was worse for wear in more ways than one. It had also been mentally taxing, he bet.

Everyone had experienced hell in some way, back there. In their own small and large battles, either with fists and weapons and blood, or internally in the mire of their emotions and mind. Nik rationalized that it was most definitely both, and shot a glance in the rear-view mirror at their two passengers, smiling with his eyes at them. Subtle, warm, and a great deal more cogent a glance that he had been able to give before they entered the vehicle.

"Is everyone alright back there? Sorry kids, I don't think I have any snacks," he said with a short laugh, deep in the chest, his eyes still expressing warmth. The edges had been worn down a great deal, but he could still offer a joke. He felt like they were now on some sort of road trip. Certainly not quite like the sun-kissed lap around a pristine lake he had envisioned, but it was something. And something in this world filled with nothing but pain and death was as good as gold.

At that moment, Rhys pulled out a pack of cigarettes. Nik's dark blue eyes lit up bright, like a kid getting their birthday present a day early. Rhys probably didn't realize how much this meant to him, or maybe he did. They were so incredibly rare, and the blond part-time devil without his vice would get very agitated, very quickly. He'd begin chewing on available pen caps, pilling at the hem of his shirt, or maybe even biting his nails. Which wasn't a good look on anyone.

"Here. I, uh, noticed you smoking earlier and figured you could use them more than me."
"Fuck, really? Thanks..." Nik took the pack in his free right hand and managed to mull it open with an expert flick of his thumb. With the confident skill of someone who had done this many times before, he held the pack near his face, eked out a cigarette with his teeth, pulled it free, and placed the pack in the space between them both.

He switched hands, the right one now guiding the vehicle forward, rummaged through his left pocket with his left hand, and pulled out his obnoxious lighter that screamed in every single way possible: I have been decorated by a child who may or may not have been color-blind. Blinged out, be-glittered, green, and more kitschy than a Keane painting.

The lighter was about to be struck, but he paused.

"If this is going to bother any of you, tell me now, but I'll try to be a good dog and stick my head out the window." Waiting for their response, he left the lighter in his lap, and put the cigarette between his fingers. This would possibly be quite a long drive, and without something to mull around in his mouth as a nervous fidget, he was going to be in a bad way.

"God, I really am losing it. Next thing you know I'll be walking around without pants. Bet that albino witch wouldn't mind." Nik was stunned for all of a second, actually very vividly imagining that scene with a coy grin blooming on his face, until the whitelighter started to wrack himself with laughter, rolling, and deep. Then he started fucking with the radio, and Nik raised both his brows higher than the last time he thought they were the highest they'd actually been. Now they were actually threatening to shoot off into the atmosphere.

"Are you...high?" he asked with a snort, watching Rhys mess around with the radio, twisting and pulling the knob to change channels. Then he dug out a Christian Hymn CD, and Nik did a double take.

"Top ten Christian Hyms." Rhys pressed his finger on the button near the window, rolled the thing down, and ejected the CD into the air. It flew out the window, smacked off the truck and exploded into the rocks and road beyond Nik's vision.

"Now I know you're high..." he said under his breath, itching for his cigarette but not wanting to be rude. If this had been before their skirmish with The Evil Dead army, he wouldn't have cared as much. But now, he didn't want to...make anyone feel uncomfortable. That battle had driven him to the point of madness, and although he wasn't defanged, he certainly was mellowed enough to be manageable.

For now, anyways.

"Here, Princess." Then their fearless leader handed him the most flagrantly feminine pair of light pink cat-eye sunglasses he had ever seen in his entire life. Percy would have absolutely killed him for them. In this case, somehow, her memory wasn't painful. But a reminder of the time before, in a light that didn't scald to look at. The still-frames were just that, memories from before, not weapons that could cut him deep in the bones.

"They have...fucking rhinestones on them." He didn't even hesitate and placed them on his face with one hand. They worked well enough to blot out the sun, but that wasn't why he was grinning like an idiot. This was turning out to be one of the best times he'd had since the world had come to an end. He had had laughs with the Witch in Queens, certainly, but nothing this carefree.

It reminded him of what his life had been like before, with his close-knit group of friends. They were the stars that lit up his life like tiny jewels hanging in the dusk, guiding his journey, always there, always warm and breathtaking.

They had taken many trips like this, and Diana had always provided the fuel for his obnoxious fire. Playing off of each other like a symphony of humor, they were unmatched in how attuned to one another they truly were. Henry provided the vacant gazes, thoughtless (hilarious) comments, spliffs and a dorky accent. Olive had all the snacks, her bright pink hair and even brighter disposition calling up all the joy in the world into one tiny, tiny little package. Percival was the one to grouse and complain, but she was the perfect foil for Olive. And smart as hell, always.

"I like this side of—" Rhys had inserted a CD he had found, that had started playing almost instantly. The key synth riff came on, the dialog between a certain set of male and female eurodance counterparts making Nik's grin about as wide as it could go.

He adopted the Ken side of this discourse, instantly, before Rhys even had the chance to make a fuss about it.

"Hiya Barbie," he did his best impression, trying to stop himself from laughing so hard he cried.

Their passengers were either experiencing the shenanigans with joy themselves, smiles and appreciation, or they were clawing to free themselves from the vehicle. In any case, Nik pulled his new shades down, stared up in the rear-view mirror, gave them a wink and then instantly shot a playful glare at Rhys.

"Say it."

Watching the two man interact with each other, Haruka smile led at the warm atmosphere. “So, My names Haruka, a pleasure to meet you,two and this beside, I don’t know if you know him but i’ll introduce him anyway, His name is Terra” Haruka introduce herself and Terra, smiling brightly which would make people blind at how brightly her smile is. “My name is Niklas, sunshine, a pleasure to meet you” The guy -Niklas- said with a flirtful smile which Haruka returned with a nod. “My names Rhys, nice meeting you” The other guy said, looking at Haruka with a smile which she returned with a laugh. It was silent again and Haruka decided to break it by saying

“Are you two a thing?”

“Sorry for rumbling, it just that, you two seems close and you know” Haruka rumbled as she blushed in embarrassment, hiding her face away using her hands.
“ Watashi wa chōdo anata ga 2tsu no kankei ni aru ka dō ka o shiritai, Yao wa jinseidesu, anata wa shitte imasu” (I just wanna know if you two are in a relationship, Yaoi is life, you know) She mumbled in her breath, still pouting in embarrassment.

As soon as it started he wanted it to end.
Anything was better than this song.

Cats.

Snakes.

His corpse rotting somewhere in a ditch.

"Niklas--" His name was like a warning on his lips and the groan that followed was one of mixed irritation and amusement. But his smile was there, a soft curve to his lips almost hidden in the shadow of his hand, and it was real. Or as real as it had been in a very long time. He tried to scowl at Nik's obnoxious reaction to the song, but it was endearing in some weird way. He arched an eyebrow, squinting through the light at this sinful man reciting barbie girl with obnoxiously stereotypical pink sunglasses. This song was almost one-hundred years old. One would think it wouldn't have survived the generation shift....yet here they were.

He had never wanted to throw himself out of a moving vehicle so much.

"I'm not--"
"Say it."
He stared at him, expression morphing into something akin to 'you can't be serious'. If he were in his right mind --as in not being his usual paranoid or deadly serious self-- Hell would freeze and Heaven would burn before he even thought about doing what this man was asking of him. There was something about that look that he gave him. The glimmer of dark delight that stirred a competitive edge Rhys hadn't felt in a long time. That look, in Rhys' mind, was a challenge.
Emrys Richard Contiello, detective, part-time angel, and devilishly handsome leader of this merry band of misfits was not about to back away from a challenge.

He held up a finger, pressing the sunglasses compartment where, from his previous inspection of this gorgeous vechile, he knew a pair of pink aviators sat. This was probably the cheesiest moment of his life, but to be quite honest he didn't care. He slipped the golden frames on and the world burst into a bubble gum shade of pink. His lips fell into a flat line and he donned the impassive expression he had been carrying around since the moment he met this group.

"Hi Ken."

His stone expression cracked almost instantly, the corner of his mouth twitched into his cheek stretching up to reveal the faint presence of a dimple. Somehow though he managed to keep his voice as dispassionate as he could. Whoever made this playlist would be on his shit list for the rest of eternity.
Rhys wondered vaguely if this forced duet was going to continue and sure enough, Nik belted the next line with almost the same (if not more) enthusiasm. He let out a huff of air, fidgeting with the frayed edges of the hole in his jeans. A light dusting of pink flushed his face and he looked out the passenger side window in an attempt to hide it.

"Su..sure Ken."

Was that a stutter? Rhys titled his head up towards the roof of the car staring at the felt ceiling wishing that Heaven would just smite him now. If only so that he wouldn't have to live through anymore of this dumb, overly-cringey display. He felt bad for the two in the back, having to sit as forced witnesses to this display. There was no way he was listening to this whole song. Rhys glared over the brim of his glasses at the man driving, watching that devilish delight swirl around in his gaze.

Whatever.
As long as he was happy, he supposed because he would never do that again.

Rhys crossed his arms, looking all the more disgruntled with each passing second. It was a hard look to keep up with the bubble gum shades and the half smirk that didn't seem to want to go away. He blamed it on whatever it was that had gotten into him, he was acting....almost as if the Hell Gate had never happened. The freeing feeling that brought was almost as addicting as it was dangerous.

Rhys turned half way in his seat, regarding the small but high pitched voice of the younger girl behind him. He managed a warmer smile, blue eyes peeking out from over the edge of the aviators. "I'm Rhys. Sorry I didn't have the chance to introduce myself to ya before."
There was a pause just after his words, a silence that Nik filled with his own introduction and the girl beamed at both men in response.

Her next question, however had him choking on air. What did she just...? Pink splashed against his cheeks and ran up to the edges of his ears. He started coughing, using the back of his hand to hide his face the best that he could. Should he let Nik answer that? On second thought that seemed like a terrible idea.

"No, I hate this giant bag of dicks."

Maybe hate was a strong word. He glanced over at Nik, hoping that the other heard the lightness to his tone and took no real offense. He doubted it, but just in case. The next word Harkua said were lost in a language barrier that he had no way of breaking out of. His brows furrowed as he looked at her with a very confused expression before slowly turning back around to look out the front window.

He cleared his throat, swinging another glance back towards the girl seated behind him. "It's fine, we do get along alright I suppose." His dismissal of the apology came out rushed if not a bit bashful, but he wanted to make sure she knew that there wasn't really anything to feel sorry about. It was....an understandable question right?

❖ ❖

She had but a moment to appreciate the blueness of Emma's eyes and the warm reassurance of her hug, knowing that somehow they'd done it; for Reverie the feeling was almost too much. She'd all but forgotten what it meant to achieve something, with someone. But hell cared not for such human emotions. It thirsted for blood, throwing whatever it had, revenants, vampires, abominations in an effort to scourge what remained of the survivors that had till now, escaped its grasp. But even as she saw their twisted silhouettes against the glorious eruption of flames that seemed to engulf the station, even as she heard the hair-raising wails and shrieks that grated against her bones and demanded that she be dragged off into the darkness to be slaughtered, she feared not just for her life, but for those with her. She was no longer alone, not now at least.

Out of the backdoors fled the survivors, the dirty blonde, Alaska, Rhys, and a handful of others. Their urgent cries spoke only of one thing. To get the hell out of there. And so she did. There was no exchange of words between the two women, they simply ran while the brunette led the way. She remembered seeing Alaska work on the downed bike shortly after they'd parted; she prayed the Huntress was able to work her magic. She hadn't dared to test the ignition before she left, earlier in the night. The roar of its engine might have attracted unwanted attention. Now, she was hoping that when she twisted the key, she'd hear the roar of the ancient beast coming to life. She made a beeline towards the curb, her converse pounding rapidly against a tarmac. A revenant leaped out from the shadows, screaming as it attempted to claw her to the ground. But with a cry, she twisted out of the way at the last moment. As it tumbled to the hard concrete, she stomped at its clutching fingers and aimed a kick at its head, feeling her foot crack against something hard. She didn't stop to check. Instead, she grabbed the jumble of air pump hosing and tossed it at the flailing horror hoping to entangle it. She recognized the bike immediately, a 2-seater Kawasaki Ninja.

In its day, the Ninja was the pride of a far eastern nation and despite being over half a century old, its previous owner had no doubt taken very good care of it. Even in the dim light, she could see just a little bit of rust on its tarnished steel trellis and its jet black paint was chipped in more than one place; but it was still very much a magnificent beast. It was not the first time she had seen it up close, but she had never seen it in this light. Which was ironic, considering how much Desmond had tried to get her to understand why this very mount was such a beauty. She loved riding, that part was true, but she never got round to truly appreciating the modern-day metal horse for what it really was. Poor poor Desmond. He could never understand her, but if he was frustrated about it, it never showed. The epitome of the nice guy. Had been nice up till the very end. Another teeth chattering screech shook the girl from her thoughts, and she quickly hurried over to the superbike. With practiced movements, Reverie leaned her back against its seat, gripped the handlebars with one hand, and the back handle with another and rocked the heavy metal beast into standing position. Her heart was in her ears by then. She knew they were close, but she dared not look. Emma was somewhere by her side, but if she was saying something, it was lost on her. Her whole focus was on their ticket out. Would it start?

Thankfully the keys were already stuck in the ignition, she wouldn't trust her shaky hands in such a situation. She gripped the plastic, turned, and flipped the switch. A sputter, then silence. God... She tried again, another sputter, but still nothing. Reverie bit her lip, and tried a final time. The engine roared to life.

"HOLY SHIT! YESSS!" There was not a moment to spare. She mounted the Ninja, waited till Emma hopped on the back, kicked the clutch and gunned the handlebars. Reverie let out a startled yelp as she was nearly torn off her mount, but she held on. Her cry quickly changed into gleeful relieved laughter as she adjusted her footing and the two of them tore a line through the encroaching darkness and sped away.

❖ ❖

The sun was beginning to blind her, as her almond shaped eyes squinted against the glare. Her cheeks were already numb from the constant blustery wind in her face. The adrenaline had worn off long ago, leaving her aching in more places than she cared to count, but still she soldiered on. The steady beat of the Ninja's superchargers was like an auxiliary heart, each rumble a reminder that she was still alive... and awake. Awake enough to wonder at the peculiarity of her circumstances. Why had she turned back? The question hung with her all through the night, like a shade stalking them through vacant streets. Only it didn't leave when the darkness fled. A nagging thought that perhaps marked the end of her solitude. And for once in God knows how long, she began to think that she might not mind the company so much.

Having been set free from their bindings somewhere during the night, her long cocoa brown tresses were billowing in the wind. It was probably the reason why Emma was looking out over her shoulder, her face must have been whipped raw. The thought struck her funny, and the young woman let out a snicker.

"There's a hairband in my back pocket if you can get it." The first words spoken ever since their quick getaway. It sounded peculiar hearing her own voice for some reason, as if she hadn't spoken in a week.

"You remind me so much of someone... y'know?" It wasn't a question really. She just didn't really know what to say, as if she'd suddenly forgotten how to interact like a normal human. When all was said and done, perhaps a small part of her was still laden with the guilt of nearly abandoning her new-found companions the night before. She thought of thanking the redhead, more than once that whole night, but couldn't bring herself to utter the words.

As they burst outside, Luiza felt a smile tug at the corners of her lips as she spotted her motorcycle, which had been knocked down as the monsters had came for them. It was a bit gory looking now, with both rust spots and blood stains marking the dented metal, though Luiza decided it gave it a little meaner edge. Looking back towards Luci, she hoped he didn't mind the lack of helmets.
It was the end of times, after all, and besides, how likely would it be that there would be collisions now with a gigantic chunk of the population now dead? Never mind the fact Luiza had never worn one previous to when shit hit the fan. It was all part of her aesthetic back then, though her motorcycle hadn't been anything like this one. Flashier, more suited for the person she had been.
"You ok riding this thing?" She called over her shoulder at Luci as she stalked up to the battered bike, sitting it upright again before climbing on, fingers deftly flicking on the ignition switch as the bike slowly rumbled to life. She couldn't help but feel a twinge of pleasure every time the damned thing purred, it's loud sputters a testament that it'd been to hell and back - and lived. It almost seemed a little sentimental to her now, something old Luíza would have scoffed at. Emotion for that? She'd say, a pout playing on her lips. She'd never held any love but for her weapons of destruction, sharp instruments of death that she'd always held as dearly to her heart as her love of hunting things. She worried about Luci's hand, but with more monsters around, Luíza found it hard to want to stick around. Turning back, she reached a hand out to him.
"Climb on."

Getting out the door he had a quick scuffle with another revenant that tried to stop him on his way. It ended poorly for the thing, head colliding with the floor before the rest of its body even started collapsing. He heard the truck driving away - am I being left behind? - luckily, a car, not the truck, was speeding back towards the station. Whoever was driving started honking like crazy, attracting all the attention. Two other almost left behind survivors jumped in before anything got to them and James started sprinting towards the car. He was quicker than the other things running towards the car, but some of them had a headstart on him. A hellhound was on his tracks but wasn't fast enough to get to him. It tried to jump at him but only caught the air and toppled over as it hit the ground.

Another one of hells bastards was just jumping onto the front of the car as he reached it. He grabbed its neck with one hand and put his blade into its scrag as he threw it off the car. In one brisk motion, he took off his backpack and held it with one arm, opened the door and threw himself into the passenger seat before he slammed the door shut again. "Thanks for the ride, uhm, we should really get out here now." he did his best at smiling despite the pain that now hit him like a train to the face. As they started driving he put his machete back into the sheath attached to his backpack and looked down onto himself painted in gore, his own but more so that of his hells bitches. He turned towards the driver, the girl who had fought the big fucking Axeman, another name he had missed so far. "Sorry for ruining the leather..." Obviously, this more or less crappy old car hadn't had a nice leather interior, but he was trying to calm down and this seemed to work, kinda. "By the way, great job downing that big guy. I'm sorry, I'm really bad with names and haven't catched yours yet ..."

Terra

As the conversation in the car was happening, Terra was with his eyes closed, meditating. He was out of his body during the duration of the trip. While he was meditating, he noticed a spirit looking at him. He went closer to see who it was but he then suddeny disappeared into nothing. A spirit when up close to him and said, "Miss me?", which startled Terra since he knew the voice. It was Ventus. He looked around once more to find him, wearing a thin white yukata. "Hey, did you miss me or not?", he said again to Terra which shocked him even more. "How are you here? I thought you were gone.", Terra replied with in which Ventus said, "I have already moved on to the afterlife but I came down here to bring you a gift.", as he showed three floating tarot cards which are The Sun, The Moon, and The Star. "Pick one and I'll grant you a spell.", he said as Terra thought of what spells he could get from a card. He decided to pick The Star in which Ventus said, "Meteor Shower, what a good spell.", as he touched Terra's forehead and light came out from his hand and entered his mind. Terra felt more enlightened after the experience. "Can we chat for a bit? I have nothing to do for the moment.", Terra said to Ventus in which he responded, "Sure, let's talk.". Afterwards,Terra and Ventus were casually chatting about what they were doing afterwards in the apocalypse.

"Niklas--" Rhys began to warn him, but Nik saw the emotion beneath the irate rise of his powerful—now mired—brow and the way his strong jaw held tension. Nik was pretty good at reading people, for the most part, which was why he was able to get under so many peoples' skin. It was, in some strange way, how he showed affection. By being able to pick apart the pieces with a calculating gaze, poke a bruise, leave a playful wound—always playful but sometimes too aggressive—he hoped that people would know he was paying attention. Better to be boisterous and obnoxious than to have the responsiveness and attentiveness of a bowl of lukewarm mushroom soup.

He was also physically affectionate, as Alaska had undoubtedly figured out when he had given her that warm, possibly far too tight, embrace before he left. Left on his way to drive around in a truck—not quite his style—wear the ridiculously posh pale pink sunglasses, play the insane ancient eurodance-trash-parody music, and piss Rhys off even more with every mile. It was now his mission to push his buttons, because the reactions he was getting were just too rich.

And with each pout, each toss of snark, he was endeared more and more to the other man in a way quite familiar, yet altogether different.

Nik felt that if he held onto that sunny warmth, the sarcastic remarks, the teasing, the banter, that he'd be able to keep himself on the straight and narrow. He was slowly recognizing that maybe, just maybe, this hadn't been something he had always wanted—this darkness. At least not in this way, not in the starvation, this madness, this shade of soul. That it was potentially just like being an addict, a touch of it against one's will in a way. And maybe, just maybe, that's what it did to you, the closer you were drawn to the nexus of evil.

Maybe Diana's little natural colored ghost, in her twilight blues, snow whites, plum purples and rich rolling browns, was his reminder of what he'd need to hold onto to stay himself for as long as possible.

They continued their play at the charade of Barbie & Ken and Nik was beside himself, barely holding onto his laughter, desperately trying to keep it from exploding because he felt he might smash into a tree if he got into a fit. Rhys ended up donning his own pair of gold and pink aviators during this time, and it was beyond perfect. It was almost too much for the blond, who suffered his responses through a mouth that wanted to do nothing but laugh.

"Hi Ken."
"You wanna' go for a ride?" Nik was laying on his deepest timber, hamming it up beyond the confines of normalcy. He did this with a suggestive wink. He absolutely knew what he was doing, and Rhys was hopefully not oblivious to the trap Nik had set in a simple back-and-forth banter on a track slipped out of time and into their getaway vehicle.

"Su..sure Ken." When Rhys' face shot away, skin peached from his stutter and embarrassment, Nik let out a snicker and bit his lower lip. The look on the blond's face was a mixture of flirtatiousness, and sincere defiance. The defiance of someone who had just put another person in a very compromising set of sentences, and had won the game, because Nik had no shame, and would do it again in a heartbeat. He was dauntless in his quest to be the king of the hill of snarky grins. And he was winning.

So, My names Haruka, a pleasure to meet you,two and this beside, I don’t know if you know him but i’ll introduce him anyway, His name is Terra.
"Finally, she speaks!" he said with a coy smile, as if announcing the presentation of a princess' first and most important words.

My name is Niklas, sunshine, a pleasure to meet you.” Rhys was growing even more disgruntled. Nik would possibly keep this up for the whole ride, to be plain. He wondered just how long the other man would suffer it before he snapped.

Then the girl-wonder gave them both a question he would've died to answer, just to see the other man squirm uncomfortably, as he was now, trying to hide his face with his hand like a flustered teenager. Nik opened his sharp mouth to speak the good, ridiculous word, but Rhys snatched that gift right out of his hands.

"No, I hate this giant bag of dicks." Nik let out a short laugh, recognizing the feint Rhys was trying to put up. Her question definitely had caught the both of them by surprise. They hadn't known each other very long at all. Then again, she didn't quite know that, and he couldn't fault her for her brain running amuck.

"Alright? Don't lie, you love it," Nik said, his grin returning, lifting the corner of his mouth, peppered with something other than joy at this ridiculous situation. It was small, but it was there, like a bit of pale fire on the edge of a knife.

Sorry for rumbling, it just that, you two seems close and you know.” Catching a clip of the sentence after, Nik gleaned a small sliver of it. Olivia wa—had been Japanese-American, and she had gotten stupid-drunk enough times to slip into her second language, and teach him a thing or too. It wasn't much, he missed most of it, but he thought in the back of his mind that maybe, just maybe, she was a little pervert.

His grin grew wider.

"It's fine, we do get along alright I suppose." Rhys was trying very hard here, and the blond noticed his attempts and smirks with an endearment he hadn't expected to feel. That was a dangerous idea for the part-time devil. A very, very dangerous idea. Endearment of this type was a conflicted, complicated feeling from the time before. His grin, like tender leaves under a too-bright sun, grew shy for a moment, falling to a mild smile.

He thought that all of this was...so strange. They had just left a verifiable war where his life as a human, with a soul, and a bleeding, beating heart, one of joy, one of soft reposes and riotous laughter, of embraces, flirtations, and quips, could've been obliterated forever. In the vast heat and sick slickness of blood, drawn out and cobbled through a sieve. The parts clumping together in a mix far less himself as a monster of fun, and far more himself as just an abominable pox upon the land. They had just been there.

And now they were here.

Four people who had been very recently strangers, now sharing a trip with smiles, two pairs of subversive, kitschy sunglasses, and a mixed CD that Nik would've paid actually money for at one point in time.

Nik looked in the back at Terra from the mirror up front, deep blue eyes studying him. He seemed to be off in his own little world, saying nothing, centered, and breathing deep. He knew that look, and didn't want to disturb him, but he did wonder just how he was coping with everything. Maybe this was his way of putting it behind him.

Was this Nik's way of trying to put what had just happened behind him? Certainly. And was it actually working?

This time, yes. Yes it was.

She was silent in the car. Unusually so.
She just looked out the window, not saying a word. Sometimes she looked dead, or hypnotized. She was remembering, thinking.
Living in the past.

“STELLAAAAAAAA!”
Stella groaned, getting up from her peaceful position in their makeshift sandbox to answer her sister’s call. They were seven now, and able to play unaccompanied. Unluckily for Stella, her sister didn’t find the fun in the sandcastle or monkey bars. She likes the swing, the seesaw; anything that required Stella to help or join in.

Stella preferred the quiet.

Soliel sat on their tireswing, her red curls sticking up at odd angles and catching in the sun’s rays, making it shimmer like fire. Stella was distracted by it, before receiving a sharp bonk on the head.
“Owww...” She grumbled, rubbing her head, “that’s mean.”
Soliel stuck her tongue out at her, making one of those ridiculous faces that bugged her so much.
“Push me on the swing, Stel.”
Stella shook her head, yawning.
“I’m too tired. Push yourself.”
Soliel have a dignified snort, crossing her short arms over her tiny chest.
“That’s not how that works dummy! Push me pleaaaaase...”
Stella sighed, and with a heavy roll of her eyes, caved, much to Sol’s delight.
“You’re so heavy, Sol!”
Soliel whined, looking back at her with a pained expression, “No I am not! We weigh the same!”
Stella pushed her harder, giggling as she did so.
“Then we’re heavy!”
The girls laughed, and played until they were called in for the day.

What she would give to go back to that time.

Stella closed her eyes, slipping into another memory, like movies in her mind, on a loop.
Which one would surface next she could never know.

Hey, Christian can you run by IKEA today? We need a new desk.”
The man, tall, with dark, short hair, and bright crucelean eyes, chuckled softly.
“So, hun, how’d you break it?”
Stella pouted, pausing from replanting her flower cuttings to cross her arms and stare up at him indignantly.
“It wasn’t me this time! The shelf just fell, and...it was probably the cat’s fault! He’s always jumping up there-“
“-it’s okay, Stell, cool it. I’ll just grab another.”
Stella sighed in relief, sagging against the wall, “I’m sorry, I just, I don’t know. I keep having random flare-ups at night...I’m trying to be normal for you,” she took his larger hand in her own gently, “...for us.”
He smiled down at her, and kissed her brow, and she looked up at him in question.
“Stella, I love you just as you are.”
He picked her up in her little apron, spinning her around the living room,
“And I’ll buy you a thousand IKEA desks if I’ve gotta!”
He always forgave her.
She’d accidentally bleach his favorite shirt, or shrink his favorite sweater in the wash.
He forgave her.
She’d slip and fall and cut herself, or slice her hand cooking and bleed on dinner.
He bandaged her up, got Chinese takeout, and he forgave her.

He always forgave her.

She didn’t know if she could forgive him for dying.

The memories kept coming and going at breakneck speed, memories playing behind her mismatched eyes, leaving her a hollow vessel, a slave to them; a movie screen, projector board, a bottle of secrets and stories; Pandora’s Box.
She waited to be opened.
She hoped their destination was near, because the ache she felt in her heart was extraordinary, and distraction was necessary.

"Thanks for the ride, uhm, we should really get out here now." Though a wide grin spread across his face, the agitation was apparent on the teanager's face. Alaksa returned it with a relaxed smile and guided the gear stick backwards running over a revenant before starting to go one her way.

A full hearted chuckle escaped her mouth when James apologized for the ruined leather ''it's ok. It's not mine'' she shrugged softly now catching up with the truck. ''I'm Alaska.....Yes like the State, and you were....uhm, James, right? i heard you interoduce yourself when we first arrived here. And the way you use that machete! It's inspiring'' Her eyes wandered to the mirror looking at the back seat. The young witch seemed as if she wasn't even in the car, so distant yet so near. Alaska opened her mouth to ask whether or not she was ok when the las expected thing happened....

I'M A BARBIE GIRL, IN THE BARBIE WORLD

The familiar song blasted from the truck that now was in front of them, making her forget all disadvantages of the day. Her grin was genuine, she looked at James with bright eyes knowing that the noise might attracted all the revenants and demons in the area, the thing is....at this moment, she didn't really care. ''Let's race them!'' excitement showed on her face as she pressed on the gas till the station wagon as inches from the truck. Her eyes now shifting between two pairs of blue eyes: ''I bet that old beat up sad excuse of a truck doesn't stand a chance in front of my brand new wagon" She shouted happily: '' if hell's on our tail let's give it more hell!'' with those words left the truck behind, pulled the windowshield down and wen like the wind, shouting and laughing with tears in her eyes, as if the world wasn't ending, as if she wasn't driving through a ghost town.
