They call it "The Dormitories" but that name does little to obscure what it really is. It is the prison wing of the Arden Research Institute's best kept secret, a vast underground research facility dedicated entirely to an inhumane experiment, known only as "The Project".

The dormitories consist of a single long hallway, roughly twelve feet wide and forty feet long. Each wall of the hallway is lined with heavy doors, secured with computerized locks and each sporting a small window covered with a metal hatch. The doors are numbered, 001 through 014, and behind each door is a small cell, equipped with a bed, a metal toilet and sink, and a mirror protected by shatter proof glass.

The unwilling participants in The Project spend their evenings in these rooms, kept in a carefully controlled sleep by a light sedative gas that is pumped into the rooms through small vents. During the day, they are taken into the lab, under careful guard, to participate in experiments. For two long months, they have existed in these conditions, drugged into subservience and unaware of the passage of time.

The participants are aware of one another. They have shared fleeting and desperate glances when passing each other in the long hall of the dormitory on their way to be experimented upon, but they don't know each others' names, or where they all came from. Although only a few months have passed since they were living their free lives outside, it feels like they have always lived in this place. Part of this is the effect of the sedative drugs that are used to keep them docile, and some of this is the oppressive fear of the shadowy scientists and mercenary guards who keep them under constant surveillance. There is no escape, there is no day or night, there is only the antiseptic white and stainless steel halls of The Institute.

---

It is April the 27th.

A siren sounds through a crack in your door. You sit up, disoriented, coming out of the nebulous dreams induced by the sleeping gas that has faded from the room. There is a red flashing light in the dormitory hall.

Your head aches, but your thinking feels clear for the first time in months. Something has changed. Your mind is free.
How long has it been? You feel like you've been living in a nightmare for days upon days, and now you are coming awake and something has changed. You can feel it in your body, a sense of power, like a new limb you have never noticed before that is restless to be flexed.
There are others like you, you can picture their faces from the half dream in which you have existed.

You rise from your bed, dressed in grey sweatpants and a white t-shirt. Your feet are bare on the cold tile floor of the cell. You move towards the door and step slowly into the chaos of the hallway.

The normal white fluorescent lights are dark and the only light comes from the flashing red alarm lights that strobe eerily in the dark.

You can hear voices shouting from further away in the facility and a racket that sounds like gunfire in the distance.

Something is going very wrong.

You hear a sound and look back, more doors open, and your fellow test subjects emerge.

A dull thrumming was the first thing felt by Ivy Brent as she was awoken by the sound of alarms going off outside her cell. She sat up abruptly, her heart racing as her mind began reeling off all the possibilities of what could be happening.

For the first time in forever it seemed, Ivy felt as though her brain was awake, like she wasn't some sort of walking corpse, like she knew she was not supposed to be here. She got up from the bed, wincing as her bare feet made contact with the icy floor. Her brown eyes drifted first to the door. It couldn't possibly be open for her to just walk out, could it? It was never that easy here...

Hesistantly, the girl took a step toward the door, but glanced back briefly at the mirror to make sure she wasn't dreaming. A frown marred her features as she saw that her reflection did not look any less repulsive. Her dark blonde hair still hung lank around her face and her skin still bore that sickly green hue. Shaking her head, she kept going toward the door and stepped out. If she couldn't get away from what she was now, she could at least get away from her little prison cell.

The lights and power seemed to be out in the long sterile hallway and a cold chill ran through Ivy as she stared at the only light in the room which blinked a malevolent red. She could hear voices a way off and the sound of gunfire. The sound caused every muscle in Ivy's body to tense and she moved to cover her ears, but at that very moment, she heard the clicking sound of more doors opening and the sight of other test subjects emerging from their rooms.

Mood: Disoriented

The feeling wasn’t entirely new to him: drifting shallowly in and out of a warm sleep, the push and pull between consciousness and unconsciousness. It didn’t feel too unlike an antipsychotic, the kind that has you in such a stupor you’re practically a zombie, drooling and dazed and entirely numb.

But this was different:

The tide of consciousness fell upon Max like a tsunami, triggered by the blare of a shrill alarm hammering against his skull. His eyes flashed open. Groggy for a moment, eyes squinting and pupils dilating in the dim light, he reflexively put his hands over his ears and groaned. His head felt…oddly clear.

He swung his legs over the bed and stood, the cold tile floor against his soles grounding amidst the chaos of the blaring alarm, the intermittent flash of red light through the darkness. “The fuck?” he mumbled, stretching his stiff neck, rolling his tense shoulders, glancing about the dim space: the bare floor and walls, the toilet, the rickety cot, it looked more like a jail cell than a high-tech research facility. (Don’t ask him how he'd know.) With the siren ringing in tandem with the flashing lights that couldn't quite chase away the darkness, the atmosphere was more…sinister. He hadn't been able to string together a clear, coherent thought since…

What day was it?

Max stood up, unsteady on his feet, and shuffled towards the door. It stood slightly open on its hinges—that was odd.

He reached for the door, preparing to place his outstretched palm against the cold metal surface and push it open. Then, hesitation—there was a tingle in his fingertips. He shuddered with the thought, an uncanny bolt of anxiety racing up his spine. That was just a dream, right? But what if…what if I could…? He planted his feet, set his shoulders, stared at the barrier in front of him. Quantum tunneling. Is that what they called it? He…couldn’t quite remember. But the kinetic memory was intact: he felt his body heat increase, watched as his outstretched hand faded and became opaque; his body, too, and the bland gray sweatpants and t-shirt began to shimmer. The feeling was strange: his body burned, as though every atom was vibrating at such a high frequency he might split into a billion tiny pieces, all wanting to fly off in separate directions—

Cautiously, he stepped forward, through the metal slab, and out the other side.

The adrenaline came in a rush as he reconstituted himself, heaving a huge sigh that was equal parts disbelief and relief. Sweat had beaded at his hairline, and he'd unknowingly balled his hands into fists. Now, he released the tension in his jaw, running a hand through his sweat-dampened hair and glancing behind him at the door. Tch. If he never had to see that room again, it would be too soon.

A new sound joined the din of the alarm: as he set his sights forward, down the long, dim hall, he heard the rat tat tat of a machinegun. The tension he’d only seconds ago released from his muscles returned, but he'd be damned if he stepped back into that cage to hide.

Ahead of him, he saw another figure in gray sweatpants peeking out from her own cell, hair wild around her face. (Is that a green tint to her cheeks, or is it just the lighting?)

“Hey! What the fuck is going on?” Right this second, in this facility, to his body—the question was multifaceted.

Dru
- location: room > hallway
- interaction: none yet

- mood: confused

In a small, cold, and sterile cell Dru lay on the bed he had been sleeping on with his bedsheet tangled around his left leg. His head was pounding fiercely and there was a loud sound he at first thought was originating from inside his head but as his foggy brain cleared slightly and woke up he realized the loud noise was coming from outside his little cell. It sounded like pandemonium out there. The alarm, yelling and even what seemed like gunshots in the distance shot a spike of adrenaline and fear through his body until he stopped it from getting a stronger hold of him.
The alarm loudly blaring through the halls was certainly something new from his usual routine. Usually, he was barely moving around, in a fog like daze, unable to string more than a couple of sentences together without getting tired of thinking. But as he sat up he realized his mind was, for once, clear as it could be. His thoughts weren't sluggish and slow but fast and more focused, which was why he jumped right into action.
Untangling himself from the sheets he climbed out of bed and hissed at the cold that shocked him out of the last hints of sleepiness. Softly slapping his cheeks he mumbled, "okay, first let's check the door. Maybe it's my lucky day for once and it will turn out to be unlocked". Silently making his way to the door he took a deep breath before pushing at the metal door to his cell. To his surprise, it opened and let in a sliver of red light from the barely lit hallway. Carefully taking a peek through the small opening he had made, Dru realized his wasn't the only door open. He quickly slipped out of his cell and joined the closest people he could find that were dressed in the same clothes he was. "Hey. Pure chaos out here huh? Any clue what's going on?" He asked while trying to stay calm, it wasn't easy. On the inside his emotions were all over the place, a cocktail of fear, confusion and hope bubbled inside his chest but years of practice had him smile instead of openly freaking out like he wanted to.

Stepping into the cacophonous dormitory hall felt like falling into a surreal dream. The hallway was uncomfortably familiar, as if the product of deja vu or a place he had passed through long ago. This disconnect was a product of nearly two months on sedating drugs. Bathed in flashing red light and echoing with alarm sirens and the distant sound of shouts and gunfire, the effect was one of supreme disorientation.

Everett could feel his fingers thrumming as if his pulse were vibrating his whole frame. It was a peculiar and alien sensation, yet it felt almost as natural as breathing. He was overwhelmed by the plethora of contradictions he suddenly found foisted upon him.

Other doors were opening and faces emerged that had that same dreamlike sense of vague familiarity, some of these people he had encountered before, although the specifics eluded his memory. Had these people brought him here? Were they going to take him back into the cell? Force him back into the fog of the walking dream and half remembered nightmares? His fists clenched, ready to swing.

How long have I been here? He wondered fretfully, feeling the thrumming in his hands growing stronger. Pulsing energy seemed to be coursing from the core of his body out to his fingertips, growing more fervent as his alarm at the situation grew.

Directly across the hall, a girl emerged hesitantly, her hair hanging down around a face that seemed somehow off-color, although in the flashing red light it was difficult to tell. He had seen her before, he knew that. His mind flashed back to brief lucid memories of firm hands on his shoulders, shackles binding his wrists as he was escorted from the room and down the long hallway. She was there. She was bound as well, joined by her own escort. Their eyes would meet for a brief desperate moment before the rough hands turned him down the corridor and the moment faded into fog. It had happened more than once; this silent interaction. A brief acknowledgement of their shared humanity.

His fists went loose. These people were not his captors. They were like him. They were captives as well.

He sought the young woman's gaze.

"What is happening?" he croaked. His voice felt harsh and rough after long misuse.

Fire and the Flood

When he enters consciousness, he’s met with the all-too-familiar static of ghostly whispers, an underlying melody to the noise around him. An alarm blares, the brashness of it leading him to wince. Blinking rapidly to clear his vision and adjust to the flashing red lights, he stands up, cursing under his breath. Instantly, his head pounds, and he stumbles forward from the shock of it.

“Bloody hell...” Adonis mutters to himself, rubbing his eyes with the palms of his hands.

His mind is much clearer than it has been in the past...God, he can’t remember how long it was. Only the endless haze as one foggy day bled into the next. Now, there was no fog, just clarity. Well, as much clarity as he can get, anyway. The low hum of whispers is always present, and in his confused state, they seem louder than ever before. Focus, Ado, he scolds himself, Focus.

He makes his way to the door and creaks it open, peering out into the hallway. A few people have already gathered down the hall, all dressed in the same grey sweats and white shirt at himself. He relaxes ever-so slightly—they must be the others he got glimpses of in the hallways. He counts the figures, out of habit, and frowns.

With me, that makes five, he thinks to himself. What an awful number, really. Glancing down the hall in the opposite direction, he hears the distant sound of gunfire. Ah, that didn’t really give him much of a choice, now, did it? Sighing, he runs a hand through his hair, and heads in the direction of the others. He’ll hang back, for now...perhaps they know something about what is going on.

Had it not been for the blaring sounds of alarms and the repeated waves of the surging bullets, Daphne would've mistaken the red ambiance as another one of her hellish nightmares. Actually, that was a lie. The bullets and alarms would have probably convinced her that she was still trapped in a dream. The only thing that made her realize she was awake in reality was the sudden consciousness of her mind.

For the past few months, she felt like she was dead. Daphne was convinced that everything that happened to her was just a small glimpse of what was to come in her afterlife. She couldn't remember anything for certain. She recalled seeing a few blurry faces who she assumed were trapped under the same fate as her, but none of them were memorable due to the escorts constantly forcing her to pick up the pace. The only thing that she could recall was laying down on a bed with masked employees above her, picking apart her every limb, and taking samples of her skin cells along with multiple tests of things being thrown at her in a large dome-like room that felt artificial. She had grown so used to the pain that it didn't bother her anymore, instead becoming a routine that was probably influenced by the sedatives that she had no idea of.

Today was the first day in months that she was able to feel anything. Daph slowly sat up, her limbs creaking loudly as if they hadn't been oiled in so long. She looked down at her arms, all battered with scratches and dents that confirmed her reality. Her head felt lighter, and she quickly stood up to look at the mirror in front of her. Daphne slightly widened her eyes in shock. She hadn't looked at herself in months. No longer did she have long strands of flowing straight hair as she did during her adolescence, instead it was messily chopped into uneven layers that didn't go past her shoulder, no doubt by those who kept her captive. Her slender body was toned. She wasn't overly muscular per se, but her limbs did show that they were able to handle some kind of resistance. They definitely had done something to her. Something was wrong.

The only thing that gave her consolation was the different look in her eyes. They were typically lifeless, but with the mysterious vanishing of the sedatives, there was a little shine in them that proved she in fact was alive. For the first time ever, seeing that made her feel like something she hadn't felt in so long: human.

Her thoughts were quickly interrupted when she was brought back to the reality of the situation after hearing the intensities of the rushing bullets get louder. The voices of various employees seemed to sound more panicky, and at this point, Daphne just needed to know what the fuss was all about. Collecting herself, she opened the door to her cell for the first time ever of her own will. She was met with equally dazed and confused humans who, just like her, were captured in this cruel facility. The blurry faces she couldn't recall were finally clear to her, and by the looks of how many fellow subjects there were, it seemed she was one of the last few who finally exited out of her dorm.

Hearing the repeated concerns of her peers, she leaned against the doorway of her room and crossed her arms to hide her injuries. "Well it's not a welcome party that's for sure," she responded sarcastically, the old mannerisms of her younger self slowly returning.

"Just get in, get the shit, then get out. Not that hard, princess."

Winter bit back a retort, instead giving the large man a faint smile and a nod. There was a time and place for everything; this wasn't the time to be snarky. Her dark chocolate eyes narrowed to slits as she waited for the cue. The gang she was contracted with had hired some tech guy who convinced them that he could disarm the security system long enough for her to slip in and steal the money. Winter hated leaving that important role to someone she had never met, but it wasn't her call. She wanted the money so she just had to shut up and do her job. A tall, lanky kid standing on the side of the door gave the nod and Winter let out her breath. She took four long strides up to the door and, without hesitation, threw it open.

Alarms blared into the pitch black night.

"Hey, what the fuck?!" Winter screamed, twisting her body around to face the leader. But he wasn't there. She whipped her head from side to side looking for any of the four members that were with her but she was alone, the alarm sounding louder and louder. Then everything, except the alarms, faded into consciousness.

When Winter became aware that she was awake, two things instantly grabbed her attention. One, those alarms were annoying as fuck. Two, it was freezing. She might as well had been naked, making snow angels in the middle of December for all the cocoon of blankets did for her. After the initial annoyance, a third thought struck her; Winter felt normal. For as long as she could remember, she wouldn't go a minute without a heavy fog surrounding her mind. That was gone. Holy shit, this feels good. But why do I feel this good? She threw the blankets off her and sat up in bed, eyes scanning the room. Nothing else seemed out of the ordinary. Maybe the government found out about these psycho freaks and came to shut them down? Now there's a thought.

Smiling, Winter stood and gave herself a long stretch. She didn't care why the alarms were going off or why she suddenly felt so much clarity. She was just glad the fog was gone. Now, it was time to find those fucked up "scientists" and pay them back for the torture they put her through. She may have been in a daze, but she could still vividly feel the pain she had gone through for their experiments. "Oh just wait. I'mma find a box of Lucky Charms," she began to walk to the door. "I'mma slit the first bastard's throat I see," she placed her freezing hand on the door knob and turned it. "Then I'mma pour the blood in the bowl and eat the whole damn thing like a good girl. Can't waste food!" Winter chuckled as she pulled the door open and then instantly changed her demeanor when she saw the other people in the hallway. Shit.

It took her a moment but then she remembered passing most of these faces while being escorted around by the scientists. So they were the other test subjects. Her memory of those times was interrupted when a sound she hadn't paid attention to caught her ear; gunfire. Oh baby, now we're getting spicy! It took an incredible amount of willpower to keep the smile from growing on her face.

"Well it's not a welcome party that's for sure." The voice caught Winter off-guard as she turned to face a tall girl not too far away from herself.

"Yeah, no-" shit, bitch. She caught herself. The sudden clarity of her mind made it hard for Winter to remember her mask. Okay, something scary is happening. Play the pathetic, scared girl. Her eyes fell to the ground, her hands nervously rubbing each other. She made sure to add a tremble to her voice as she continued, "...no, I-I don't think it's people wanting to help us." She shifted anxiously on her feet, slightly raising her eyes to shyly look at the other people around her.

"What-" Voice crack. Damn, I'm good. "What should we do?"

Ivy watched as more and more of her peers emerged from their rooms, looking just as confused as she felt and wearing the same grey pants and white shirt as she was. The sameness was eery. It should have been comforting to know she was not the only person like her here, but it just made the situation more distressing.

Her body tensed and her stomach churned as she watched them. It was disgusting to know they had all been used and broken so awfully. Now that her thoughts were more clear, she could remember the vice-grip of her escort and being bound to a table while they drugged her with an awful acid green serum.

A searing pain began flowing through her entire body and the feeling of leafy tendrils meandering through her body just under the skin. No, she thought, willing herself to try and calm down so the tendrils would not emerge from inside her. Not now!

It was then that someone's voice caught her attention and pulled her out of her own head. The tendrils began retracting and the pain began to fade away.
'What's happening?'

It was the voice of a male. Ivy turned toward the source, a boy across the hall from her. The blinking red lights could not help but frame him as sinister, but she vaguely recognised him. She shook her head slowly. 'i-I really don't know...'

Another voice spoke, a girl. 'Well it's not a welcome party, that's for sure.' Ivy looked up at the red lights and couldn't help but imagine them as mood lighting for a zombie apocalypse themed party or something. In a way it made the situation seem less dire. She looked around at all the other kids around her. There were seven of them out here in total now.

'Whatever is happening, it seems like a good opportunity to, you know...not be here anymore maybe,' she said with a tone of uncertainty like a question, not meeting the gaze of anyone around her.

"Whatever is happening, it seems like a good opportunity to, you know...not be here anymore maybe."

Max couldn’t help but laugh, an ironic chuckle rising from his throat in spite of the horror that seemed to be happening down the hall. The tension eased again in his jaw and his back, form loosening, shoulders slouching easily—she was right. Max said as much:

“We can’t just stand around and wait for them to come back. At least, I’m not going to.”

He shifted on his bare feet, the approaching sound of gun shots and shouting fueling his adrenaline. He didn’t want to stand around wasting time, waiting for the skirmish down the corridor to reach them—he just wanted to get the fuck out of there, game plan or not. It was a feeling Max was intimately familiar with, “waiting for the ball to drop.” The knot growing in his chest, the tension in his limbs, the little voice in the back of his head begging him run, they were a tangle of sensations Max had spent his formative years harboring. These days, though, he used the stress to fuel his fists—Max didn't run away anymore. He’d rather die than be forced back into that little white room, rather fight than be drugged into a helpless stupor and injected and vivisected like a guinea pig—

He could feel every nerve ending in his body; the pain sparked and burned like electricity under his skin, bolting down his spine and setting every neuron from his toes to the tips of his fingers ablaze. The agony was too deep to scream, too encompassing to move. Whatever liquid pain was in the barrel of that syringe, that nondescript clear fluid, broke and rebuilt parts of him that would never be the same again, altering and mutating and evolving without his consent. Time became warped, as if dilated around the orbit of a black hole—what felt like an eternity was only mere days of depressed syringe plungers and the endless din of a heart monitor. The physical tests, weeks of them, came later.

Max shuddered at the blurred memory, one he could feel more than see with his mind’s eye, and the amused half-grin he’d sported briefly fell off his face. It morphed into an annoyed grimace as he crossed his arms, waiting for a consensus. In the meantime, he glanced around, taking in each of the forms and faces of his fellow captives as they stood in a half circle in the corridor. He’d seen these collections of features before, but only fleetingly, as if from a dream: The small girl with ash-blonde hair whose skin looked like it was colored with chlorophyll; a good-looking shaggy-haired guy who stood at Max’s height, quiet, as though he was listening to something in the background; a dark-haired girl with hard eyes trying to make herself small and unassuming as she rubbed her hands and shifted her weight nervously; a slender light-haired guy who tried to speak with a lilt of light-heartedness and showed a brave smile; a taller, darker skinned girl with confidence and sarcasm coloring her tone; an unassuming man who had his fists balled, ready to fight his way out, before he realized they were friends rather than foe.

And then Max, dark hair mussed, tall with broad shoulders rigid with anxiety, a rainbow of noticeable bruising along his wrists and forearms, and anger brewing in his chest. His hands curled themselves into fists, his subconscious readying itself for whatever action they would meet at the end of the corridor.

The cacophony of shouts and gunfire seemed to be coming from the north end of the hallway, where a set of six wide stairs moved down to a landing then turned off to the right. There was a pale light gleaming down from the stairwell interrupted by shadows that flashed back and forth as though some figures were hurrying past the stairwell on the floor below.

The shouting and gunfire had escalated into something more alarming. There was a sudden edge of panic in the voices and at least one man's agonized scream. Beneath it all, there was another sound, a whirring, roaring sound that was both animalistic and mechanical, like the roar of an engine and the snarl of a bear all mingled up into one haunting sound.

"We should move that way," Everett said, nervously, pointing in the opposite direction, down the hall towards the south, away from what ever it was that was roiling in the labs below.

Before any of them could move, a man's body was thrown forcefully into the stairwell from the landing below. He flew against the wall of the stairwell with a splattering crunch and dropped in a heap to the floor. Everett stared in shock at the dark stain left on the wall from the man's collision. He scarcely had time to process what he saw when something huge and dark emerged into the stairwell. In the half light from below and flashing red alarm lights from above, the hulking, asymmetrical shape seemed like a roiling mass of meat, with only the vaguest sense of form. It moved with sharp, vicious motions, propelled by immense strength and violent hunger.
"Run!" Everett heard someone screaming, realizing only as he turned that the words had come from his own throat.

He reached out as he bolted to grab the wrist of Ivy, the person he had been closest to and he grabbed Adonis by the arm of his shirt, attempting to turn him to run. The thing behind them made that same whirring snarling noise and lunged up the stairs into the hall behind them.

Everett wasn't sure if any of the others would follow, but he knew that he had no desire to be that thing's next meal.

Max was at the northmost end of the hallway, closest to the stairwell. He had been facing the rest of the group when the thing, whatever it was, emerged into the stairwell. "Run!" one of them screamed and he bolted into the dark of the hallway, dragging at least two others with him.

Max turned to see the thing as it lunged into the hallway, all flesh and claws and a miasma of foul darkness. In the flashing red light and the surreal circumstances, Max felt like he was in a dream, watching this incomprehensible thing rumble towards him like an avalanche of rippling muscle.

"Oh shi---" by the time the words had even partially escaped his lips, the thing had already fallen upon him and torn him in half.

Fire and the Flood

Curious as one of the others steps forward, ready to fight, Adonis cranes his neck to get a glimpse of what’s happening. Gun fire and screams and a mechanical roar echo through the staircase and pierce the muddled static of voices, no doubt a prelude to something terrible. He takes a few steps back. Not good, not good.

And he watches, utterly horrified, as a beast comes crashing up the stairs and into the hall. Scrambling back as it tears into Max, he finds himself unable to look away from the monstrosity, entranced with morbid curiosity. Was that thing the cause of all this, then? Where did it even come from? How’d it escape?

“Run!” Someone shouts, a hand grabbing onto his sleeve and tugging him along. Ado doesn’t need to be prompted more than once; he turns on his heel and darts down the hallway, after the one who grabbed him and another girl.

Terrible things come in threes, he mindlessly recites.

“What,” he mutters breathlessly, “the bloody hell—is that?”
