    The Illustrious.

    G
oing to college is one thing, plenty of people wish to experience in their lifetimes. It’s a time to open new doors, make new friends, find the love of your life, and just… Find yourself. But what isn’t always talked about is how important the choosing of the college is. Sure one could go to Princeton, Yale, Harvard, or Drexel… But even out of those schools, there is one that is not only equal to them but excels way above what they were and ever could be.

Dubbed ‘The Campus in the Trees’, Dubois University is here and ready to make itself known. Being the country’s best in basketball, being in top ranks of Law, Business, Computer Science, and Engineering, this school is nothing but the best and those within it have been nicknamed ‘The Illustrious’. Oh, did we forget to mention it’s an HBCU?

With over 15,000 students, while it may paramount those who try to take it down, it doesn’t mean it isn’t filled with drama. From friends to frenemies, baes to hurt baes, baby mommas and baby daddies, there isn’t a dull moment on campus.

It’s now a new year and the new freshmen have finally arrived- ready to take on the school and earn the title of being ‘illustrious’. The only question is- How far are they willing to go to get it?

Onyx

She remembered her first year at DuBois like it was yesterday. As she sat there and let it process for a second, it was kind of almost like it was yesterday. She entered DuBois two years ago at the age of 19 ahead of most students as she had an associate degree. She was already a practicing paralegal before most students her age even took the SAT. After that, she already had most of her general credits she needed and loaded up on her psychology requirements.

In two years, she was done and entering Law school. So despite all of the work and accomplishments she had put in that took most people four years, it wasn’t really that long of a time.

She watched as the Freshmen began to pour into the basketball Arena in their Olive Branch t-shirts. She chuckled as she noticed that just like her first year, the girls had jazzed up their t-shirts to make them “cute”. The DJ was spinning music as if it was a club and not a giant mixer for the Freshmen. That was an HBCU for you though.

Carnival games spread across the (covered) arena floor. There was the tank dunk game, dart throwing game, and more all with winnable prizes. The prizes were just mainly school paraphernalia, stuffed animals, or just extra tickets to get food. Each student was given two food tickets, presumably one for one food item and one for a drink. So there was plenty of incentive for winning games, especially for a hungry college student.

The stage was built on the eastern side of the gym, towards the area where the tunnels are. Soon, local acts would start hitting the stage and then the headliner SahBabii.

She felt proud of herself as she held her clipboard and readjusted her suspenders. She looked around for Onyx, who was helping her with everything that was going on with Olive Branch. She just mainly was there so Saruh wouldn’t get bored, but officially she had her there checking in on the food stations making sure there were enough food to match the tickets as the vendors had promised.

There was a minute where she looked to her phone to check if her boyfriend had messaged her, and shrugged her shoulders when she noticed he hadn’t. He was probably busy and that was fine, he had the right to be.

She waved to a couple of students who had come in who had spoke to her and laughed. She wasn’t sure which students were genuinely being nice to her and which were being nice because of her multiple positions. She was not only the daughter of a elite lawyers, an excellent law student, and the Dean of Pledges. Getting in good with her was a shoe into multiple aspects of life.

When she spotted Onyx she moved towards her to see how everything was going. Onyx was one of her favorite people on campus. She met through her little brother back in Texas and she’s been something like a little sister to her since, though there wasn’t a huge gap in their ages.

"Hey Ony! How is it looking?"

Leigh Shaw.
She sat on the edge of the bed looking at herself in the full length mirror which hung on the closet door before her. Her suitcase sat on the floor, sprawled open, clothes in every direction. This was not typically her, she was usually very organized and had her shit together, but today, today had her on edge for some reason. Maybe it was "first day" jitters or something. She'd briefly met her roommate which she did not know how she felt about quite yet, but otherwise, she hadnt really socialized much since getting here. Again, not very much like her given she is typically very charismatic and enjoyed being involved in everything social.

She pushed herself up off the bed with the slightest groan escaping her lips. Her body ached, maybe it was the uncomfortable tiny dormitory beds or just not getting enough sleep the night before. Kneeling down beside her suitcase she pulled out a pair of distressed blue jeans with holes in the knees. "These oughts to do" she mumbled under her breath and tossed them onto the made bed, at least she'd gotten to doing that, before standing and moving towards the closet. She pressed her forehead against the mirror, it felt cool on her skin as she turned the knob and swung the door open in one swift motion. Taking a single step inside the tiny closet she peered down at the shoes she had managed to line up on the shelves at the bottom of it. Her lips pursed to one side looking at the current available options and then back at the suitcase and then up at a few articles of clothing hanging in the closet. She ran her hand across the minimal things she had placed on hangers and pulled a white cropped tank off of one of them, that too she tossed on the bed. Looking back down at the shoes she grabbed a pair of jordans and turned shutting the closet door with the heel of her foot.

It didnt take long for her to pull herself together into the outfit she had decided on. She turned back to the bed where the cut up olive branch tee lay. She sure as hell wasn’t going to wear it the way it was initially handed out to all the freshman. She slipped it on over her head on top of the tank, the shirt was cropped just the right amount to show the skin of her taught stomach. Looking back into the mirror she fluffed up her hair with her hair pick and gave herself a quick wink. Suppose that's all it took to get her feeling her normal self again. She swiped the tinted chapstick onto her full lips pressing them together to disperse the product evenly, a full smile spread across her face. Quickly kneeling down she threw the scattered clothes into the open suitcase zipping it up and putting it up against the wall, promising herself that she would get to putting the rest of her things away...eventually. Leigh grabbed the small white designer purse hanging from the closet door knob and pulled out her phone to snap a quick mirror selfie before heading out. "Perfect" she mouthed looking down at the photos on her phone as she walked towards the front door of the dorm room. She would definitely post one soon enough, first she had to make her big debut.

It didnt take long before she was at the doors of the basketball arena. She wrapped her long fingers around the metal handle and pulled it open, a gust of cool air hitting her face. Here we go she thought as she walked further in through the halls that were covered in trophies and other memorabilia. Leigh stepped into the gym mindlessly grabbing whatever fliers that were being handed out as she gawked at the large arena. The music blared in her ears as she passed by different carnival games and food stands. Looking down in her hands is when she finally noticed what all the handouts were, one of which being a couple of food tickets just as her stomach grumbled.

Georgia. It looked different from the Music Videos and shows that he saw. Though to be fair, this wasn’t Atlanta, and those videos were in Atlanta. He had been to Atlanta, but under adult supervision, but he was hoping this time he would get the chance to be out and free.

But nope. He was stuck in the middle of the forest surrounded by a bunch of trees. That was so lame, but maybe this Olive Branch event would give him more insight on what the school really had to offer. He said he would walk over with his roommate, but the athletic dorms were near the arena and football stadium, so it wasn’t like mans would get lost on the way, right?

“Bumbclot,” the young boy groaned as he readjusted the Olive Branch shirt he received. The shirt was weak too, and he wasn’t sure that was a good sign on what this event would like. His parents sore they would have fun, they did, but that was so many years ago. It was no way they could promise it was going to be poppin’ in this new era.

He moved out of the dorm quickly, mostly because his steps covered more ground than most people’s. He reached to open the door of the area, but hesitated for a bit. It him. This was the first time he was stepping into the Arena named after his father since he had become a student. This was really the beginning of his journey to get out of his shadow.

He took a slow breath, opening the door before a few girls walked by and he offered a smile to them as he held the door open. He took a deep breath as he followed in behind and walked through the tunnel to the gym floor. He didn’t even bother to stop to look at the basketball’s trophy case. He moved straight to the gym floor and took in the music and everything else that was going on.

This was nice. He could work with this. He moved slowly through the crowd to a carnival game, a basketball one and exchanged a glance with the guy running it.

Come on bro…I’ll just give you a prize.

Alex chuckled holding his hand out and taking an extra food ticket, before moving along. I guess he was too well known to try to play the basketball carnival games. He closed his eyes before stopping in place, sensing someone had stopped right where he was walking.

When he opened his eyes, he titled his head a bit. At least the girl he almost ran over was cute, right.

“Uh, excuse me, my bad didn’t mean to stop right on you like that. I’m Alex though, it’s nice to meet you.”

Here Onyx was once again. DuBois University. Man if you'd told her a year ago this place would've changed her as much as it has she'd have laughed in your face. Well truth be told she hasn't really personally changed all too much just her situation. It was so bittersweet on multiple levels.

She liked it here, and she doesn't regret coming here at all. She's met some cool people, reconnected with others, found her place in her sisterhood, got to do what she loved being on the dance team, and pursue a degree she's passionate about. She around like minded people which was kinda part of the point in coming here, as well as the people aspect. There was no better place in the world to make connections in her opinion. Connections that would last, and sure you can make an argument for Yale or Harvard, but those kinda ivy league places only take care of their own which she isn't mad about. It's just she isn't one of their own. DuBois provides that same elite ivy league status, and protection except she IS one of their own here.

She also liked it because it was much easier to pretend everything that happened last year with her family wasn't a factor. No body was going to ask her any more how her summer was, or what she did, or why she didn't post a lot, or anything with her family. Why she wasn't at certain events and summer galas with them like usual. There were only so many lies she could come up with before she just ignored the question all together.

Now people would as her about school, and that's something she could handle. That was something she had control over still. Not to say there wasn't stress to be had in that as well because she was still going to be juggling the same amount of work as last year. In fact you could now ad paid internship on a radio station on campus to her list of things she's juggling. Full class load, Sorority duties and events, dance team practice and games, and now a job...yay...

But hey if anyone can do it she knew it was her. Nothing could or would shake the confidence she had in herself when it came to her ambition.

She wasn't even going to add in the relationship drama since well as much as it had hurt, there wasn't much she could do about it right?

Needless to say she needed an event like Olive Branch to start things off right! She was super excited when Saruh had asked if she wanted to help out. IT would keep her mind from pre-stressing out and allow her to just have fun and met some of the incoming freshman.

She remembered being here last year as a freshman and thinking, 'God I hope there aren't too many bugs'...what!? She knew the place was known for 'being in the trees' or whatever, but she didn't think it was being literal. Like the difference between camping and glamping. One if fun and the other is just spraying as much Off as your lungs can handle praying the mosquitoes aren't mutants.

She was not built for labor or the outdoors for extended periods of time. She was big on not ruining her style due to heat, bugs, or anything like that. She still was, but now she kept up her image of perfect because she didn't want people asking questions rather then just because it was the only lifestyle she'd ever known. It killed her inside over the summer not being able to switch up her nails every week to match her aesthetic of the week. Or get her hair done, in fact she spent most of the summer in her free time figuring out how to do most things herself so she could still look amazing at half the cost.

Anyways today was going to be fun. Why? Because she was getting to help out and hang with Saruh. She adored and admired her so much. She always had so much on her plate and handled it all always it seemed. Sure they'd met because she's close friends with her little brother, but over time she's gotten to know her too and view her like a big sister. Especially last year when she first got here. From showing her the ropes, to rushing (Even though she wound up joining Delta to keep up the legacy) she was their as a helping hand she could depend on.

Onyx checked and even double checked with the vendors making sure their numbers matched what she had written in front of her before hearing the familiar voice ringing in the air. She turned to face her with a bright smile on her lips, "So far so good. A few of them actually might have a bit extra so that should be good for a few lucky freshmen." She giggled.

That was something all College students seemed to have in common especially freshmen and that was the desire for food always. Even better if it's free. "What about you? All good? Ready to enjoy all your hard work." She hummed.

@IcePrincess

acadia brinson

'You gotta be kidding.'

Standing in front of the mirror in her dorm, Acadia pinched the front of her shirt and was tugging on it. No matter what she did with it - tuck into her jeans, tie it in the back, or tie it in the front - it still looked a hot ass mess. Really it wasn't that bad, but Acadia didn't want to wear the same thing everyone else was wearing. After letting out an exasperated sigh she settled on tying her shirt in the front and tucking the 'tail' underneath so her midriff showed. "Whatever, it's not for that long anyway..."

The Olive Branch had been something of a Dubois tradition for the incoming Freshmen. Her parents raved about it and told both her and her brother about how much fun they were. Carnival games, prizes, food, etc. Opportunities to meet new people and form connections. Her parents were even still friends with the people they met at college and she'd met them on numerous occasions. They always told her that college was going to be the best four years of her life and it all started with the Olive Branch.

"Oh, excuse me!" Someone said, running off after they bumped into her.

Her parents were liars.

Acadia managed to pick out her brother in the sea of people, but decided against approaching him. He was talking to a girl, it seemed, and she just rolled her eyes. No girl - in her opinion - would ever come close to his ex so she didn't know why he bothered. Not only that but Acadia had grown protective of her brother knowing where his future career goals would lead him. The last thing she wanted to happen was some whore trapping him and she knew Atlanta was full of them. Gold diggers that didn't want to work for their money and thought getting knocked up by a celeb was a flex.

It wasn't.

The only good thing about this event, however, was it being outside. It wasn't in some stuffy building where you could smell who wasn't wearing deodorant, but there was the problem of bugs and mosquitoes. Luckily Acadia had basically bathed in it before she left her dorm and carried a travel sized can of bug spray in her back pocket. The music was another plus and it wasn't some trash DJ who played thirty seconds of a song before starting another. With one of her food tickets in hand she slightly danced her way to a booth that had funnel cakes. Even if she knew she shouldn't be indulging while she was supposed to be conditioning, she wouldn't tell anyone and would work twice as hard in ballet this week.

The white, warm ray of light shone through her window and the curtains of her bed just the same, revealing the beauty of the early morning sun as it steadily rose over the horizon. Her eyelids twitched as consciousness slowly began to take hold of her, making her aware of her surroundings. Constance woke up to cool, silk sheets and the cushion like topper that she’d place on her bed. She rubbed the rest of the sleep from her eyes as she sat up, staring dazedly at nothing for a few moments.

It was a little off for her, waking up so late. Back home the clucking of a rooster was what signified the start of a new day, well before the sun had begun to peak over the horizon. The silence that she was met with was different but not unwelcome. It would definitely take some getting used to however. Constance didn’t think that her roommate would appreciate her moving about during the early hours of the morning. She glanced at the figure across the room. As quietly as she could she began to get ready for her day.

There was definitely a bounce in her step. Her excitement was almost palpable. Dubois was a place that she left like she would come to love fiercely. The sense of community and togetherness that she had felt while on her summer tour had drawn her in. The location had been what cemented her decision. Surrounded by forest, Constance was reminded of home and it made her smile. She was sure that it would make for good foraging grounds.

Despite the dark fabric of her clothing, there was a twinkling in her eyes. And not to mention her person. The golden thread that had been woven into her hair caught the light, glittery prettily under the sun’s rays. Her clothing was not a style that she had usually worn but she had done her best to match the color of the university and the olive branch shirt. Plus, sewing the skirt from scratch had been fun.

Finally her destination was in her line of sight. Stepping into it felt as if she was stepping into a familiar place. Constance was suddenly reminded of the harvest festivals that her hometown would usually host, or the state fairs that she would go to with her family. There were so many things to try out, she felt a little overwhelmed. Constance didn’t have the slightest idea of what she wanted to do first.

A smell suddenly hit her senses and she closed her eyes, taking it in fully. The smell of funnel cakes got her feet moving, only stopped when she reached the stand. Just as Constance was walking up, the girl in front of her turned. The two of them collided and Constance was pushed back a little. “Oh! I’m so clumsy! Are you okay?”

Kodie Labissière

Maybe this was the chance she was looking for to start her life over, but back home. She was close to Atlanta, and maybe Rome wasn’t quite her home city, but it was close enough to take regular trips though her probation officer might not be too keen on her running the streets of Atlanta.

Olive Branch would suffice for now though. It was a, let’s call it, Family friendly version of the Atlanta night life. Either way she was glad to be back in the south and experience the southern life she had missed in her time in LA. Los Angeles wasn’t a bad place. It was actually pretty cool for a lot of things she was looking for. The issue was it just wasn’t home, and they did things differently. Amazing tacos though.

You could see the excitement in her eyes when she pulled up to her freshman dorm about a week ago. The world was an oyster to her, and she was definitely about to explore it. Pretty girls were everywhere, and she got to live in a dorm with all of them? Life was about to be crazy.

She didn’t sleep much the night before, having snuck out from the strict clutches of NSO and hit the studio to work on music. It had been quite a long time since she had really put focus in to a song, but the night before she was able to crack one out. It actually came out pretty good if you asked her, a song called Normal which was just describing her feelings about being back home and feeling like everything was normal.

By the time she got back to her room, her roommate was gone, but she didn’t seem like the type of person to snitch from their brief interactions which she was okay with. She debated trying to go to sleep and skipping Olive Branch altogether, but knew that would draw more attention she didn’t need.

So she sucked it up throwing on a thin, flannel shirt that was mostly black under her Olive Branch shirt, a little concerned about if she’d be too, but went with it anyways. She slid on some jeans and a pair of cool grey 11’s.

Making sure the little make up that she did wear was good, the eyeshadow, mascara, and lipstick, she slid on her chains and brushed her hair once more to make sure it was still nice and pressed. She moved out of the lady’s dorms and began walking across campus looking at her apple watch to check the text messages from her friends about the song she made when she stopped in her tracks at a familiar smell.

Normally, she would have ignored it because college students and that smell went hand in hand, but it was mostly supposed to be freshmen on campus. She also couldn’t partake considering the termsof her probation. The smell was very pungent though and curiosity got the best of her as she moved over towards the smell tilting her head when she noticed a pretty girl sitting in a car with the windows up. She slowly approached the car and knocked on the windows.

“Hey, what’s up? Uhh..you mind if I join?”

Peg Walker
34031269352_a9aa4888ac.jpg
Peg had to admit she felt old as she walked through a sea of, presumably, majority freshman. Granted, three years wasn't much difference, but when it came to academics, it felt like a lifetime. Transferring to such a large school proved more taxing than she imagined, but the only thing that kept her grounded was knowing she wasn't experiencing it alone. Of all the freshman here, she hoped to run into her brother. She didn't want to be the embarrassing sister that was always stuck to his side, but she did want to see him. They hadn't seen each other since their first day on campus and she wondered if he were busy spending time getting to know his new roommate. Maybe she would text him…

She looked over the various games and other activities meant to be icebreakers and a fun way to kick off what would likely be a grueling school year. How deceiving? Of course, Peg didn’t know what to expect, but community college required effort so a prestigious university must definitely require more. She glanced down and sighed. Now wasn't the time to worry about that. LW had told her to loosen up and make friends, but Peg wasn't so sure she knew how to do that. They came from a small town; everyone knew each other, but her family had always been the only "friends" she needed. Sure, she'd gotten acquainted with classmates and coworkers, but she never went out with them. Though, to be fair, she never really had the time either. Between school, work, and taking care of her mother and brother, the only thing she ever did with any extra time was sleep. However, her ability to even be at this place made a big difference. After the past few years, the concept of focusing on herself was foreign, and now she no longer had to be "Mother-Sister" Peggy Jean. So LW was right; she should relax, have fun, and try to make friends, or, at least, acquaintances.

She continued walking until she made it to the stage, looking in awe. She had forgotten that musical performances were part of the program, but shouldn't have expected any less from a school of this caliber. No one was up there yet aside from stagehands doing their final rounds to make sure everything was ready to go. Peg couldn't help wondering to herself what all the computers and machines looked like and how they functioned, more interested in behind the scenes than surface performers.

Leigh Shaw.
Leigh suddenly felt a presence on her, a heat radiating onto her. She turned around looking down with the thought that whoever was the one ontop of her was smaller than she but to her surprise she was being towered. Her eyes traced the length of the figures body, a pair of jays, some jeans and then that damn olive branch tee. She finally came up to see the guys smiling face, he had cast a literal shadow over her. She felt her head tilt ever so slightly to one side, maybe to get a better look at him, or maybe the weight of all that hair. She could barely hear him over the music but could make out the words by following the movement of his mouth. He had made some kind of apology for almost running her over. 'Alex', he was tall, very tall, he had a good 6 inches on her at least, maybe more, and lanky. "Nice to meet you" she said loudly in attempt to speak over the noise. "Im Leigh." Besides her roommate, this was really the first person she'd truly met all week. She studied his face a bit longer, his hair curly, like hers, but his frosted at the tips. His style was pretty similar to her own as well as they both were rocking jays and blue jeans 'hmmm' she thought. "No worries on almost running me over. Doesn't usually happen to me but, I forgive ya."

She turned back around in the line and stepped forward. Her stomach growled again, a bit more aggressive this time. Her intention was to eat, and then she could worry about socializing. She looked over her shoulder, the tall kid named Alex still behind her. "You getting something?" she asked pointing towards the food stand. He must have been, otherwise he wouldn't have entirely missed her in line, maybe he just never looked down and couldnt see her given he was at least half a foot taller than she. She wondered what happened to the other females that were shorter than she, and she was pretty tall for a female. He probably just steps right over them she thought with the quietest chuckle.

She was at the front of the line within minutes and handed the person behind the stand one of her tickets pointing at a hotdog, seemed easiest as she'd be walking around taking everything in. Taking the plate with the hotdog wrapped in a bun she picked up the ketchup squirt bottle and squiggled a line across it. She didnt wait to step away from the table before taking a bite into it. Her eyes shut almost immediately and an unintentional "mhmmmm" escaped her lips, it was almost orgasmic for just being a hotdog. It was everything she had needed to satisfy the pang in her stomach, but now she needed a drink. Her tongue snaked out of the corner of her mouth licking the remnants of ketchup on her bottom lip before realizing Alex was still there, looking at her as she did so. She raised what remained of the half eaten hotdog as though in a toast to him and turned around walking away.

"Awkward" she mouthed to herself as she tossed the paper plate into the trash finishing off the last bit of her food. She scanned the arena spotting the table of drinks. She just needed to wash it down with some soda or something now, there couldn't be any way they were serving alcohol to underaged freshman at a school event, could there? Once she spotted the table she made a beeline right for it, maybe he wouldn't follow her. She handed her last food/drink ticket over before grabbing one of the large cups off the table. She sipped from the straw quickly pulling away with a scrunched up face. "Ugh... root beer" she groaned.

The music blared through the speakers around her in her tiny black volkswagen beetle. The bass of the car shook the windows as she rapped along to Snoop on the radio. She swayed her body side to side as she took another hit from the joint she had rolled earlier that morning; nothing like a wake and bake. The smoke rose surrounding her, engulfing her body. She breathed in deeply as she inhaled and held it in before blowing it through her nostrils and letting what remained escape from a the slightest part between her lips. Leaning her seat back she looked up through at the roof of the car before closing her eyes and just feeling the beat of the music.
"what a perfect morning"
she said to herself before breaking into another verse.

Holding the joint between her index finger and thumb she examined what was left of it. It was tightly rolled to perfection, she had mastered her craft over the years, given she had been introduced to the wonderful Mary Jane at an early age of fourteen, maybe it hadn't been early enough, she could have used it sooner. Especially when she was going through it back home when her father had reappeared into their lives again with an entirely new family of his own. Yea, she could have definitely used it then but her mother tried to shield her and her sisters from these things the best she could, but Kira had her ways. She brought the 'J' to her lips taking another long pull from it, inhaling deeply when she was startled by a knock on the window. She jumped halfway into the air hitting her head on the roof of the small car, the smoke blowing out of her, eyes wide.
"shit shit shit"
she mumbled coughing under her breath.

Cracking the window open she was relieved to see it wasn't campus security or a faculty member but more so just another student. She looked the girl up and down, blinking the smoke out of her eyes before rolling the window down even more to let some of it exit the hotboxed car.
"what?"
She had been caught way off guard and quickly realized the music was still blaring through the speakers of her car. She turned the knob on the dash lowering the volume to a more appropriate level.
"come again?"
she asked raising a brow before noticing she had been gesturing towards the joint in her hand.
"ahhhh"
Kira nodded leaning over the arm rest popping open the passenger side door before rolling the window back up hoping the female standing outside her car would understand and get in.

Alex Brinson

Despite his high energy nature and goofy attitude, Alex had always had a bit of an awkwardness about him. He didn’t get that cool level-headed demeanor that his father had. The stoic countenance that didn’t seem to care about anything he did until he looked at his wife (Alex’s mom) or his daughter (Alex’s twin). Never Alex though.

He wanted to say that it didn’t affect his confidence, and he did say it often. Truth was though? It made him doubt everything about himself. He was never good enough in his own eyes, so he felt like no one else ever thought he was good enough. Well, everyone except Onyx.

She was always so kind to him. They were a power couple, even only in high school so when they broke up, he felt like he lost the only person in his corner. (Ignoring his mom but his mom was scary) It was most of the reason he came to DuBois and having to be in his father’s shadow. He was hoping that maybe, just maybe, they could get back together.

But he couldn’t think of her now. There was a gorgeous girl in front of him so he smiled as she said her name. Leigh. He’d commit that to memory.

No worries on almost running me over. Doesn't usually happen to me but, I forgive ya.

He chuckled. She was probably making an appeal to the fact she was pretty tall for a woman, and had he met her before the summer she would have been closer to his height. Now, however, he was almost a full foot taller than her,”Yeah sorry, still not used to being this tall.”

The conversation was strained with the music, and he wasn’t a hundred percent she heard him, so when she asked if he was getting something he nodded. He didn’t know what to say or what to do next. He had actually only one real girlfriend and that was Onyx and they only broke up a few months ago.

He sort of nervously rocked on heels a bit as she moved and got her food, and he did the same shortly after. Instead, he got a burger and fixed it up at the condiment station before taking a bit. Or attempting to. Somehow, he couldn’t hear their conversation really, but he could her the noise she let out as she took her bite. He rose a brow biting into his burger and watching her and her little…..outcry.

He looked away for a few second into the crowd because he thought he saw his sister. Ex that, he could confirm it was her, but turned back around and Leigh was gone. He blinked a few times, finishing the burger before tossing the plate and shrugged his shoulders naturally going to where the drinks were (which he wasn’t sure why he didn’t go at one time, but whatever) and seeing Leigh was there. He watched her scrunch her face up exclaim root beer, before he handed a ticket over and got a sprite. He sat the sprite next to her,”Here take this..I have extra tickets anyways.”

GIANNIS.
The emission of noise and vibrations that came from the iphone which rested on the nightstand beside the bed raised him in a stupor, the audible chiming continuing until he slapped his large hand across the screen to shut it off. He fell face first onto Saruh's side of the bed gripping her pillow and deeply inhaling her scent which lingered on the white linen sheets beneath him. His eyes shot open as he looked around the room without moving, she must have already gone to the Olive Branch event for the incoming freshman she had been speaking about the entire week leading up to it. With a loud recognizable groan he rose from the bed making his way to the bathroom in their room. Standing before the bathroom sink he ran his hands over his face before peering into the large mirror before him. He looked down at the watch sitting on his wrist, the event had started already but would go on for at least a few hours. Lacing his fingers into the seam of his boxer briefs he pushed them down before stepping into the stand up shower and turning on the hot water, letting it immediately run over his body not minding the coolness before it heated up and the steam encircling him.
---------
He pressed the start button on the dash and the engine of the BMW M3 roared to life, the vibrations through the steering wheel; exhilarating. He pulled out of the driveway of the two story home the couple had been residing in as he tapped in the address for the Brinson Arena on the nav on the dash, not that he was unsure how to get there but simply just because. They didn't live far from the school, it was a rather easy drive to get there, it was a daily thing for them, they usually rode together but Saruh had taken her own car today. The corner of his mouth twitched upwards as he saw the Brinson Arena coming into view and he pulled into the parking lot. This would be a surprise to Saruh as earlier he'd complained of a headache and stated he likely wouldn't make it. The disappointment on her face at the time was clear but she didn't say anything about it, per usual. He pulled into an empty spot near the back entrance of the arena before climbing out of the car. He flattened out the button up shirt bumping the car door closed. Patting at his pockets Giannis pulled out his phone, she hadn't checked in, there were no missed calls or texts that popped up on the screen. 'Hmm' he thought to himself, she was either upset or simply busy with the event. He went ahead and assumed the latter as he hated the idea of her being mad at him.

He pulled the back door to the arena open and felt his head crane backwards. This didn't look like a freshman event. He couldn't quite remember his own olive branch event, possibly due to the abundance of alcohol he and his roommate had consumed that night. Letting out a deep breath he stepped into the gym letting the door slam shut behind him, not that it mattered, you couldn't hear it over the music anyway. Giannis scanned the gym for Saruh, his eyes squinting ever so slightly to try and zero in on her. It didnt take long before he spotted her, the little pink tee barely covering her navel and her jeans just sitting at her hips supported by a pair of suspenders, a sharp breath left his lungs as he took in the sight of her. He ducked his head a bit weaving through the crowd moving in her direction, his height didn't do him any favors in keeping him hidden but it helped she wasn't looking in his direction as he ascended the steps to the stage. "Excuse me ma'am" he said in an unrecognizable voice as he wrapped his arms around her waist from behind "but I don't think this top is quite Olive Branch appropriate" he whispered against her exposed neck before planting a kiss. He took her by the hand and spun her around into him, the grin on his face larger than normal as he cupped her face into his hands and gave her the gentlest kiss.

interactions

Onyx

To be so distant, so detached Saruh always had a nurturing instinct. She took care of her little brother in an almost maternal way when he was around, and her nurturing was very much sisterly for Onyx.

Onyx wasn’t the only girl that Saruh took in as a sister, but their relationship seemed different than the others. Maybe that was because of Onyx’s connection with Saruh’s little brother. At this point she pretty much saw Onyx as her blood sister. As the little sister she never had, and that dynamic was allowed to develop at DuBois. Saruh even tried to get Onyx to go AKA, but Saruh was very aware of how strong legacy mattered. Afterall…Saruh herself was a legacy (also ignoring the fact that Saruh didn’t really care about sororities like that. Well outside of the service and sisterhood).

So having Onyx help was a twofold request. She could tell something was off with the girl and she didn’t know what it was, but she was sure it was more than just her recent relationship issues. So the first reason she asked her to help was to provide her with a distraction.

The second reason was to spend time with her. She hadn’t really gotten to see her much over the summer. Saruh had a tonne of her own responsibilities, like her mini tour she had as an opening act for her “label’s” bigger acts. She got to open up along with Zay, who she also asked to help, but that was another story for another time. Saruh also had to intern at a Legal Firm…her father’s…in New York for a month. Which was a lot on its own, but not as bad she made it seemed since she loved her father. She just was staying with BOTH of her parents during that time and dealing with her mother, Zendaya.

Yeah. Her middle name was her mom’s first name and her first was her grandmother’s, Seraphine. Only in the south.

So far so good. A few of them might have a bit extra so that should be good for a few lucky freshmen

“Ok that’s good. That should mean even if the extra tickets floating around as prizes to the carnival games, everyone should be able to get some food.”

That’s why she asked her for her help. She was really good at it and she could count on her to be correct without checking behind her. She still was going to check behind her, but that’s just more to do with Saruh than Onyx herself.

Saruh offered Onyx a smile as she opened her mouth about to say something, but trailed off when she looked out in the crowd. She could see him plain as day. He was the tallest person in the gym at the moment, and his signature hair was impossible to miss. It was none other than the son of who the gym was named in honor of. In his own right, he would have brought a lot of attention and fanfare around him. Afterall, he did come as the number one ranked recruit for his class year. The biggest question mark was his height, but all the scouts were convinced he’d have a growth spurt. Boy were they right. From 6’2 to 6’7 in one summer.

Still, he brought even more being the son of a Hall of Famer and a mother who was extremely successful in her own field. Not to mention he was Onyx’s ex. Not too long-ago ex, and he was flirting with another girl right at this moment. Loser.

Either way, she couldn’t let the girl see this.

What about you? All good? Ready to enjoy all your hard work.

Oh wait! She said something?! Act normal Saruh act normal Saruh.

“Yeah I’m totally excited for everything. I look forward to keeping you distracted..I mean busy. BUSY. I look forward to keeping you busy.”

Smooth Saruh.

She was about to say something but instead let out a yelp when she felt arms around her waist and a strange voice accompanying as kiss. She was about to turn and slap whatever Freshman thought he could get fresh with her, until she was spun around and her eyes made contact with the assailant.

It was her beau. And all the anger and anxiety about being touched by somebody washed away in an instant as he cupped her face and kissed her lips. She forgot about everything around her and the fact she was supposed to be attempting to distract little sis.

“Giannis…” the words escaped from her lips before she had a chance to stop them. Not that she wanted to, but just everything about him made her melt and submissive. She was his in more ways than he could imagine, “Don’t spring up on me like that. I was about to slap you…thought you were one of those touchy freshmen.”

Giannis was her everything. If she was being honest with herself there was probably a little codependency between them, but it hadn’t been an issue thus far. He hadn’t gotten in the way of her dreams so as long as he stayed on the right side of that…..

"Hey Ony! How is it looking?"

DuBois University was much better then he initially expected. Sure he knew the reputation and that it was a great school because his parents raved about it all the time...especially the last few months. However finally being on campus, surrounded by the natural beauty of things, and on his own for the first time in a long time...it was mesmerizing.

Growing up with his adoptive parents he's not really wanted for nothing so the level of grandeur he was used to compared to the dorms was actually pretty comparable. The only big difference being the whole sharing factor. He'd never had any siblings, and while he had cousins they only ever visited. This would be the first time in his life he's have to share a close living space with someone for an extended period of time. Someone he'd never met before at that! Oddly enough? That thrilled him!

This whole thing was like one big adventure and he was ready for it. His mind didn't stop racing ever since stepping through the doors. All he hoped for now was that him and his roommate would get along. Ken liked to think he was a pretty agreeable and easy going guy, so he didn't think it'd be hard.

You know what was hard? Deciding what to wear. Sure the Olive Branch shirt was a given, but everything outside of that took him forever. He must've changed pants three or four times, shoes at least six, and don't even get him started on his accessories. Most girls get a bad rep for how long they take to get ready, but Ken needs to get ready hours in advance to have a chance at being at things on time.

He finally settled on some lightly ripped black jeans, the shirt, black and white vans, his regular wooden beaded bracelet, and a brown beanie over his dreads keeping them minimally tamed. Over all he was satisfied and just hoped his roommate wasn't such a stickler for time. To be fair it was a big event and would last for quite a while so it wasn't a big deal if they were a little late. He took out his phone looking at the time....yah only 15 minuets past was totally record time for him.

And with that they were off.

Once they arrived the energy surging through the place was energizing to say the least. He wanted to try EVERYTHING. So much to do and so little time. There were also so many interesting looking people everywhere. Some personalities were bolder than others, some physical attributes stood out more then others as well, and all of that just made him eager to talk to them and see what they were about.

As someone who typically stood out himself for some of those reasons, it was a bit comforting to see he might actually meet people who were like him here. People who might actually get it.

The main reason he didn't immediately run off to greet said strangers despite that being his impulse was because he told himself he was first going to try and foster a bond with Shaun before experimenting with strangers. He stuffed his tickets in his pockets because honestly eating was the last thing on his mind to do. He'd go if Shaun wanted because he was still very much a go with the flow kinda guy, and he did want the guy to like him.

He looked over at the boy next to him he'd be spending the next like 9 months with a huge grin on his face, "So what are you thinking looks interesting first?" He asked. Also he wanted to give Shaun first dibs after him having to wait on him back at the dorms to get ready.

Giannis wasn't someone who blended into a crowd in Onyx's eyes. He had a presence and style to him that you just didn't see a lot, especially in a crowd of Freshmen. So even though Saruh couldn't see him due to her back being towards him Onyx did. She didn't say anything though because that would just ruin the adorable fun that was about to ensue.

Ok look She liked that cute romantic stuff in real life more then in movies. It made life feel more like a movie, and things always turned out ok in rom-coms. It was a cute little pick me up, since she totally didn't spend some of her down time over the summer benching a bunch of romantic comedies to cheer up. Nope, not Onyx. Over what? A silly little three year relationship she might've thought would last forever? Pff couldn't be her. Totally not the type to have been secretly waiting hoping he would've called her and they worked things out.

Even if she wanted to warn the girl she was too thrown off by her response. Did she say she needed to distract her? Was she not doing as good of a job as she thought of covering up how she's been feeling? To be fair if there was anyone (other then Alex) that could tell their was something off about her mood despite her best efforts it would be her. Hiding from her just wasn't something she was ever good at doing, and normally wasn't something she'd even attempt.

She raised her brow a bit confused, "Uh ok. I'm sure that won't be hard. I'll be the best lil worker bee you've ever had." She grinned. It was a weird response, and when Giannis finally made his presence known and spun her around Onyx took the opportunity to look away and give them their lil moment. She just so happened to look in the direction Saruh had been wondering if maybe it wasn't her terrible acting skills but something odd happening on site with the event that threw her off.

What caught her eye faster then she'd like to admit was none other then her Ex. And guess what? Of course he wasn't alone, or with his sister though the sickening tug happening in the pit of her stomach wished she'd turned and saw her instead. Was he..was he flirting with that girl?! Ok yes she looked really pretty (not as pretty as herself, but still really good), and he was being kinda awkward about it...but they'd just broken up!

Ok it was technically a few months ago but still! Was he already over it? Over her? Over them? Like everything they had was nothing? The smile she'd painted on her face cracked for just a moment before she swallowed hard and quickly spun back around to face the couple fixing it back up. She wasn't about to let him see that. See how hurt she was. Why? But she wasn't hurt.

Nope what did she care right? They broke up so he could talk to whoever he wanted to. In fact She could do the same now. She could find some really hot guy around here and flirt with him or more because she was free to do whatever she wanted. If she was so easily replaced, two could play that game.

Would she? Probably not....

Why was he even here??? He still bothered to come here knowing she was here just to flirt in her face with other girls? He had to be on the basketball team which means he knew she'd have to see him eventually and be around him, and he still....just WHY. She supposed she shouldn't have assumed he'd change his mind about what college to attend just for her, but this...this seemed a bit cruel and she never thought of him as mean spirited. He'd always been so kind...

She needed to get away from this spot, she needed to go somewhere and do something ASAP. Having no idea about what Saruh and Giannis were doing or saying after what she'd just seen she responded with only the goal of getting away in mind. Suddenly the idea of third wheeling with the happy couple made her feel physically sick. She just hoped that Saruh didn't see that she saw exactly what she was trying to protect her from.

In an attempt to hide her feeling she forced and even bigger smile on her face. The type usually reserved for dance performances, but it was all she could muster. She gave a small wave towards them both, "Good to see you again Giannis!"

She didn't really know him as well, just from her time last year when she was around Saruh. The two seemed truly in love and she was more then happy to see her with someone who seemed to love and appreciate her. Apparently that kinda loyalty was rare. She didn't wanna risk her mood rubbing off on them when they could be having fun.

"I...uh should probably go check the game booths. Yah make sure they've got enough prizes. Oh or! Or you could just give me whatever is left on your checklist so you two can enjoy the day. You deserve it!" She offered. She needed a bigger distraction. She needed to move away from this spot in the gym, she needed to get as far away from HIM as possible.

That or she needed to find a really hot guy to flirt with, and what better way to do that then talking to all the vendors? One of them was bound to be hot right?

“Aye man, ya breathe too hot to be all in my face like this.”

Malachiah pressed an open palm to his homeboy’s, Terry’s, face. He shook his head with a slightly annoyed look on his face. Ole dude was hyped about coming back to Dubois, or the ladies of Dubois more like it. Malachiah couldn’t front like he wasn’t glad to be back but for an entirely different reason. Plus, Terry was doing too much already.

“Stop playing with me, I brushed, flossed, rinsed, and repeated this morning!” Came the indignant yet ignored reply.

Another person spoke up, questioning if he had gotten his tongue. The silence that followed had the group clowning him anew. Malachiah only shook his head, an amused smirk on his lips. It really was good to be back though, he was open about missing the university now. It had become a second home to him in a way. The grief that he had and sometimes still gotten over it was well worth it. Malachiah held a sense of pride at what he’d made of himself. He was all the more closer to his goals.

And the praise from his older brother was nice too, but he’d never let him know it. His head was big enough as is, without him thinking that Malachiah still idolized him deep down. The two of them were as close as ever and spending the break together had been fun. Malachiah had spent his break chilling for the most part, catching up with a few people here and there too.

And speaking of catching up, it hadn’t been long before he was able to meet up with the gang again. They had been texting about meeting up together for the Olive Branch. Most of them were Kappas with a few exceptions and Malachiah was only close with about two of them out of the entire group of six. All of them were cool people from what he knew though. He just preferred to keep his circle small, he’d always been careful about who he let in.

They continued to clown and play when they reached the Arena. Things were really on and popping already. Malachiah could remember his first Olive Branch, he hadn’t even wanted to come honestly. He was as unfriendly as ever. Slowly the group split until he and Terry remained. The dude was talking his ear off but he was used to it by now.

@IcePrincess

acadia brinson

Something hit her.

Or, rather, someone?

No, she bumped into someone.

Acadia had been so invested in the funnel cake that she hadn't even watched where she was walking. The plate in her hand threatened to fall over but after a few seconds of embarrassing movements, she managed to get it balanced in her hands again. The piece that was pinched between her thumb and index fingers had fallen to the ground and Acadia looked at it for a second. It was a tragic display, for sure, but the moment she looked up to the girl she'd basically assaulted she forgot all about it.

Acadia Marie Brinson was as straight as a broomstick, but when it came to beautiful women she often questioned herself. Cadi had been appreciative of women she found to be attractive, even if it did nothing for her and the girl standing before her was no exception. Realizing she was staring she blinked to try and center herself - shaking her head as she took responsibility for what was about to be a powdery disaster. "Oh, no, that's my fault. I usually watch where I'm going but I was super invested in this funnel cake." The moment the words left her mouth she realized how they made her sound and internally berated herself for it.

There was a momentary silence as Acadia found herself staring again before giving the girl a genuine smile - for once. "I'm Acadia," she stuck her hand out only to bring it back when she saw the powdered sugar on her hands. How messy was she eating just now to already have sugar all over the place? Embarrassing. "I forget how messy these things are." She shook her head, wanting so badly to just wipe her hands on her pants but knew better. Not only did she have home training but the last thing she was going to do was mess up her clothes.

During their introduction, Acadia's phone went off and she excused herself so she could check it. Normally she wouldn't dare take her phone out in the middle of her conversation but this particular chime was reserved for important notifications - text messages, dm's, and even the gossip blog (though that was because she wanted to make sure both herself and her brother were staying out of the tabloids). Acadia set her plate down on the counter off in the corner of the booth she had gotten it from and was able to properly clean her hands. She reached into her back pocket, pulling out her phone and the first notification she saw was, indeed, the gossip blog.

She rolled her eyes, unlocked her phone, and set out to read the small blurb that was posted. As she read, her mouth slowly opened and her eyes grew wide. She looked at Constance, as if she were reading it too, and then back at her phone. "That stupid, fucking, moron." She looked back to her new acquaintance and shook her head. "Sorry, my language. My brother is just an idiot."

GIANNIS.

Maybe it was the way she let out a yelp or that fire in her eyes when she turned around but in that moment his stomach twisted in knots. Nerves? Maybe. As soon as she saw him that fire was extinguished and she melted into him and thee knots in the pit of his stomach quickly settled themselves.

Don’t spring up on me like that. I was about to slap you…thought you were one of those touchy freshmen.

His chest rumbled, the chuckle making it’s way up his throat and out from between his lips. The thought of one of the freshman possibly trying to get handsy with his girl made him laugh but also churned his insides. “I’m sorry love. I didn’t mean to frighten ya.” He nuzzled the nook in her neck with his nose. “I just wanted to surprise my girl.”

He quickly realized they weren’t exactly…alone, well, despite the gym being filled to the brim with freshman and some of the upperclassmen. He peered up from her neck, his eyes meeting Onyx who was staring out into the crowd. He traced her gaze out to the sea of freshman spotting what she’d been staring at. “I think she found who you were trying to distract her from” he grumbled before nibbling at Saruh’s bare neck. He spun her back around, wrapped up in his arms nodding in the direction of Jae and a tall female in the crowd. Saruh had mentioned the entire thing between the exes, and what happened and what not but he wasn’t the type to really get mixed up in anyones business other than his clients, well technically not his clients yet, but you get the idea.

Good to see you again Giannis!

“Yea…you too Onyx” he called out in her direction as she practically ran past them taking the clipboard from Saruh’s hands. She would be taking over Saruh’s duties for the night. Oddly, he felt a smile creep along his face, despite the entire situation. “Well, well, it appears you may have the rest of the evening off” he said into her hair. He leaned his chin on her shoulder looking at her with the eyes. Something was going on in Saruh’s mind. But what? Her mind was always moving a mile a minute, it had to doing what they did or sought out to do. “She’ll be alright” he said in an attempt to reassure her knowing Saruh well enough that it likely wouldn’t be enough even coming from him.

He took her hands in his keeping his arms around her waist, almost as a way to keep her grounded. Keep her there with him. To eliminate her worries. Hoping, just hoping, that his presence could possibly help alleviate the anxiety from her, at least some. Especially now. He had distracted her from distracting Onyx and he couldn’t help but feel in his bones that maybe she would put some blame on him. If not, maybe he should blame himself. He couldn’t be so sure. It was odd, he usually was very confident in himself and never second guessed himself, but at times when it came to Saruh he felt like he couldn’t live up to her entirely.

Leigh Shaw.
The cup of root beer in her hands almost went flying when she realized the guy named Alex was standing beside her again by the drinks table. She set the drink down leaning a hand on the edge of the table taking a deep breath. "You know, for being so damn tall, you are still too freaking sneaky. Warn me next time, huh?" She rubbed a hand at her temple before tilting her head to one side noticing the sprite he had set down before her. She slowly picked it up taking a sip from the straw and felt a sudden relief, her thirst being properly quenched. "Thanks" she said raising the soda cup slightly as in a toast.

The phone in her back pocket suddenly started buzzing frantically. She raised a brow setting the cup back down before her as she pulled out the phone. It appeared to be the schools gossip blog. She raised a brow as she swiped open the notification. Her mouth slowly started to gape as she read the post peering up at Alex through her lashes and then rereading the post. There must have been some kind of mistake.

It's been one week of the freshman on campus and it looks like Alex Brinson has already found his college bae, Leigh Shaw. Hmmmm wonder what his ex Onyx thinks?

Leigh ran a hand over her face with a groan, luckily she didn't wear much or any make up as she would have surely smeared it over her face. This always seemed to happen to her, like something she simply couldn't avoid wherever she went. She was a very sociable and charismatic person and absolutely did not mind being in the limelight but this wasn't what she was going for.

She looked back up at Alex, her lips pressed together in a straight line. "First off....why didn't you mention you were Alex, as in THE Alex Brinson?!" She asked loudly enough for him to clearly hear her over the music. "And second, I am definitely not bae!" She rolled her eyes and felt her hands clench into fists as she turned her phone around practically shoving the screen in his face in order for him to read. Her blood was coming to a boil. This obviously wasn't his fault, he wasn't in charge of the gossip blog but she did hate the fact that her name was up there next to his. She didn't even know who he truly was until a moment ago. This was not the kind of attention she was looking for.

She picked her soda back up off the table tossing the straw into the trash. She brought her lips to the edge of the cup chugging the cup of sprite wiping the corners of her mouth with the back of her hand. She threw the empty cup into the trash as well as she looked around bringing her hand up to the back of her neck feeling a knot forming in her neck. "I need a fucking drink" she grumbled. She pushed open the zipper to her purse hanging across her body remembering the small flask she always kept handy. Quickly pulling it out she popped open the top not even attempting to be discreet and lifted the flask to her lips taking a long swig of the clear liquid, it burned as it traveled down her throat.

She snatched her phone from Alex's hands, frustrated with the entire situation. "Please, just, don't follow me" she said before walking away towards the tunnels of the arena to exit.

Shaun Cianciola
img-thomas-mcdonell-2_180801559334.jpg
The first week had come and gone by in nearly a blur. There had been so much to take in and get used to. Hell, Shaun was still getting used to feeling like he fit in. He was surrounded by all these fancy and driven academics when he was barely confident in the major he'd chosen (hence, choosing two and mistakenly not even considering the workload). Still, he'd keep in mind to try to work hard and maybe feeling more comfortable would just fall into place; maybe it would trick him into feeling like "one of them".

But it was "sylly week", so he'd have time to worry about that later.

Meeting his roommate had been the second most eventful thing to stand out this week, right behind landing on campus. He had always lived with groups of strangers, at least until he and his mother moved to the U.S., so sharing space was something he was accustomed to. Although, his time was usually spent in large houses, so the aspect of living in such close quarters would be new. He remembered arriving to the dorm first, at least so he thought. He briefly analyzed the size of the room before shrugging and picking a side. He was putting his things away when he turned to see the tall boy enter the room. His height had been mildly intimidating (not that Shaun would ever admit that), at least, until Keith spoke. The more he slowly learned about the guy, the more he learned he was a giant Rasta-looking teddy bear. So far, he wasn't quite Shaun's speed, but he was alright. His biggest description of Keith would probably be "energetic"... which might not have been the perfect word but he certainly seemed bubbly and excitable, especially when it came to the Olive Branch.

Shaun had dressed as casually as he always did, lazily tugging on the Olive Branch t-shirt, blue jeans, and an old pair of sneakers - not too beat up but definitely not new, and brushing his fingers through his hair. Meanwhile, Keith seemed to have trouble deciding just what he wanted to wear. Shaun only plopped down on the foot of his bed and occupied himself with his phone while he waited. He could have gone on his own, but he had agreed to go with Keith. Besides, taking time to bond with his roommate was probably beneficial. As soon as the other young man was ready, out they went.

"So what are you thinking looks interesting first?"

Shaun noted the way his roommate gleamed, looking like a kid in a candy store. A smirk crossed his lips along with a small chuckle before he shrugged. "Whatever you wanna do, man." He patted his back. There were so many people and so much going on, and while games were fun and food was even better, it was Shaun's first time really taking in the appearance of the people around him. If he didn't pay attention to their details, then everyone would have blended into a sea of Olive Branch shirts...and that wasn't a good way to remember anyone.

I’m sorry love. I didn’t mean to frighten ya.

I just wanted to surprise my girl.

Well, he did a great job at that, she was thoroughly surprised. So surprised she was sure she was a couple of shades brighter after that little surprise.

A menace. But he was HER menace.

Giannis wasn’t shy of showing his affection with her physically. He knew when it was absolutely inappropriate, though they didn’t always agree when It was necessarily appropriate. Right now probably wasn’t the most appropriate time, but it was something she could live with. The freshmen should be too preoccupied with what they had going on and Onyx was probably used to it by now.

I think she found who you were trying to distract her from

Right, Onyx. Damn it Giannis. He distracted her from distracting Onyx from Alex being around another woman. She moved to try and draw her attention away from the event, but it was apparently far too late to make that move. She had already seen it. She had already gone into a, for lack of better words, mini-panic attack about it.

She was sure there was nothing more she could do about it in the exact moment, especially with Giannis there so she instead handed off her clipboard to the younger girl and watched her walk off.

That bit of helplessness she felt in that moment always messed with her anxiety and she could feel herself slipping away a bit, until she felt his hands in hers. He had a way of keeping her grounded when everything felt like it was floating a way. He was her, as cliché as it was, rock and there was nothing more he needed to do. He couldn’t save her from everything and as she felt one drop of water on her nose before she looked up.

There was nothing Giannis could do to prepare for the next event that was happening. Saruh wasn’t even aware that the gym was equipped with a sprinkler system, it must have been an antiquated system leftover in the renovations. And in a few moments, every last one of the sprinklers that were still there went off and poured over the entire arena. Many of the students ran out of the gym as fast as they could, causing quite a bit of chaos but some of them remained and stayed to enjoy the water works.

Staff stepped in, including safety workers and helped properly navigate the people out of the arena. Campus police went on to search for the cause of the incident, working with maintenance but all the while Saruh just stood there with her once well done hair, currently sticking to her face, and her pink shirt now soaked.

She didn’t say anything, she just stared off into the distance watching the chaos unfold. Watching the vendors scramble to protect their stuff. Hearing the people behind stage moving to protect the technology.

She took in a slow, deep breath and closed her eyes. Everything she worked for, ruined in an instant.

Keith could appreciate people who were vastly different than himself. In fact he loved that the world was full such a variety of people. It'd be a dull life if everyone was the same even if they were all like himself. He wondered if his Roommates chill would eventually rub off on him. He was certain deep down that might actually do him some good in the long run. Who knows they might both rub off on each other for the better the more they hung around one another.

He was a bit surprised after his display this morning that Shaun would give the reigns of choice back to him. He either really must not care about what they do, or just be very kind. Either way Ken was going to take the opportunity.

Decision, decisions...well he knew he didn't feel like starting with food, which was a good starting point. Mini games and prizes it was! Which one to start with? In his immediate line of sight he could see the tank dunk games, a dart throwing station, that gold fish game...could they have pets? Well he supposed a gold fish didn't take up much space. Then again any animal small enough to fit in a small tank should be easy. Maybe he should get a gold fish? Nah, he'd be out and about too much knowing him for a pet.

Ok so no gold fish game...but there were still so many options and all of them where calling his name!

"Damn, I wish there was like a DDR vendor I'd kill at that. All this throwing stuff is just going to embarrass me." He chuckled. "But I guess seeing someone get dunked would be fun. Kinda like splash zone at Seaworld even if I'm not the one to hit." He grinned walking backwards as he spoke in the direction of the tank.

Honestly he only picked it because it was the closest thing to them in his line of sight. He figured maybe their plan of attack could be starting with the closest thing and just hitting up everything on the way back around. Circle strategy couldn't go wrong, right?

Just as they got to the tank someone was up and ready to pitch. They missed which earned them a clever heckle from the person in the tank. Just before they threw their second shot drenching the tank heckler...drip...drip...

Honestly for a split second Ken thought it was just the water from the guy getting submerged, but, he didn't think they were even that close, and suddenly it was a lot more water raining down on them. Ken felt the sensation of dancing in the rain as the sprinkler system apparently turned on. Lifting his hands in the air a bit confused and curious at first before busting out laughing.

Despite the fact that now most people were running around trying very hard to get away from the water or vendors trying to protect their things, Ken wasn't phased. In fact he thought this was hilarious, like something you'd see in a TV show. What a great start to his college experience!? He just shook his dreads like he was a wet animal letting the water spray even more before looking to see if Shuan had stuck around or had dipped already fleeing the good times. If he was gone that was alright, it seemed there were a few other people playing around and dancing in the chaos. Ken could always link up with them and meet up with Shaun back at their room.

Now he just had his fingers crossed he wasn't mistaken for being one of the causes of it.

Onyx didn't waste any time getting away from the couple...both. She was appreciative of the fact Saruh didn't put up a fight or ask any questions and instead just let her go off to find a new distraction. She knew she'd have to talk to her about it later, but for now her heard and heart were in a tizzy, and she just couldn't face it right now.

Of course the Du-gossip blog was coming in hot one the first day. She should've expected it, but to be the first big story of the day was irritating. She tried to make her own post showing how unphased she was by the whole thing not even making a comment in response to it. After all she'd already seen it with her own eyes before the blog got to break the news to her. She wanted to act like the whole situation was beneth her, but social media just couldn'thave that.

Between Alex messaging her, and the girl taking the time to point it out in a public group chat she just couldn't ignore it. Though to be honest the girl was rude as hell and she didn't understand why Alex was even bothering to try and "befriend" a girl like that who was talking about him like he was some kind of dog. Ugh she hated people like that. Not to mention talking shit to Acadia too? The girl was all in a huff because she was called a random...which was a fact. The girl was in fact RANDOM. Why get so hurt over the truth?

Just when she thought about brushing it off that if that was the kind of company he wanted to keep she would find it much easier to stay far away...that was until he messaged her. Common sense told her to just ignore the message...but this was Alex. When had she ever been able to turn away from him? (Well intentionally.)

It was such a weird conversation. She didn't know how to be since for the first time she couldn't just be herself with him. It didn't feel appropriate anymore. Which of course lead them into another mini fight about the past. She was kinda surprised he wanted to see her, especially by the end of it. She wanted to see him too...she just wasn't sure how that'd go. She felt such a mix of emotions just seeing his name pop up on her phone how was she going to act face to face with him?

None the less she still agreed because, well she missed him. She hated herself for caving for him so easily, but she did, and she couldn't help it.

Her mind was running wild with all these thoughts as she was "talking" to a vendor who was obviously trying to flirt with her. Which was the original thought, but she just couldn't for the life of her return the energy. She kinda just wanted to get away from the whole event because everything was a reminder of her social life's current flaws. She was growing to hate being here as much as she hated being stuck in this conversation.

Suddenly she was provided the escape she'd been praying for, just not in the way she wanted. The cold wet sensation starting to soak her to the bone left her in shock for the first few seconds. All she could think as she watched the water pour down on everything in front of her was how pissed Saruh was going to be. She'd worked so hard on this for THIS to happen?

She was knocked out of this shock as a random student bumped into her trying to quickly get out of the arena. Onyx quickly started trying to help nearby vendors cover their electronics since the staff was helping get students out already. After all they would need to stay on friendly terms with a lot of these vendors for future events. It was the least she could do to try and make things right.

Today was NOT her day.

Once the sprinklers were turned off she figured it was fine to get out of there. She told herself she was just going to leave get a change of clothes real quick then come back and see how she could continue to help. Staying in soaking wet clothes would do nothing but get her sick after all. She walked out pulling her phone from her pocket, "Damn it!" She shook it hoping it didn't get too wet and was still working. "Please, please, please." She held the power button hoping it'd turn on. She sighed with relief when it did and stared at the last message from Alex wondering when she should reply to him as she walked and accidently bumped into someone.

She kinda assumed most people would've been long gone by now, so she was surprised to still see some stragglers, "Oh my bad-" She looked up and saw it was of course none other then Alex...yup not. Her. Day. "A-alex!? Why are you still here?" Of course the first time they see each other face to face in months she would be soaking wet, her hair in ruins, her make-up all but washed away...not exactly the way she wanted him to see her especially after that lil rumor about him flirting with other pretty girls today.

Zay & Peg
Maybe he would have been a little more useful than he was if he hadn’t been drugged up as much as he was. Then again, he probably wouldn’t have been useful at all if he hadn’t. He had agreed to help Saruh with this, especially since he had helped put on other shows (and performed in them) but being around a bunch of Freshman was in no way interesting to him.

He was moving a box out of the way that had some equipment he just set up when someone’s motion caught his peripheral and he turned to face her.

She was gorgeous, but seemed a little older than the other freshmen so he flashed her a smile filled with gold teeth before speaking, “Hey you’re helping out?” his Tennessee accent was deep as his words flowed methodically, with a slow and steady cadence.

Peg was caught off guard as her thoughts got pulled to a sudden question and her eyes equally as distracted from gazing at the stage to a young man. She glanced back on either side of herself before confirming he was indeed talking to her. His words replayed in her head and she briefly noted the way he sounded like home. “Oh- um… No?” She recalled the way her brother always told her not to sound so lost and to be more confident. To be fair, she had been caught by surprise, but LW was still right…

She gently cleared her throat.

“No.” She stated more firmly. “But if you need a hand, I’ll gladly offer one, especially with the tech.”

He was handsome, but his 24k-esque teeth reminded her of the boys back home, the ones who were often trouble and would suggest she head home early when something was about to go down. Somehow, this only made her more curious about him.

Screen-Shot-2021-01-11-at-3.08.21-PM.png
He rose a brow at her first response shaking his head a bit, going to pick up another box and moving to open it still listening to her as she reaffirmed she wasn’t here to help. He shrugged his shoulders a bit, wondering why she was back here then, but she was cute. She could stay.

Her offer to help only caused another shrug from his shoulders a bit. She said she could help with technology, but wasn’t so sure how she could, ”Uh… there’s not really much tech to set up for real. I mean when Sah come through he might need some lighting help.”

"Mm," Peg gave a solitary nod. She was always down for new experiences, so she considered taking him up on that offer. Although, it briefly crossed her mind if he was even authorized to make those calls.

Her gaze wandered to the area behind him where everyone else seemed to be focused on doing their own thing. "Where's your help? I know they ain't got you doing this all yourself." She stepped closer. "I imagine volunteers are welcome." She grinned. "What box you need next?"

She also imagined he probably didn't need her help. With the performances so close to starting, they had to be nearly done with setup if not just adding the finishing touches. Still, she hated to stand around uselessly and it was an excuse to learn more about this stranger.

"So, what's yer name, cutie?"

Zay thought for a moment about what he needed and looked up,”Uhh that one over there. Can you just open it for me?”

He didn’t wait for her to respond, instead tossing the box he was done with in the trash and moving back around, but stopping dad in his track when he heard her question. A smile crept on his face for a bit, before he looked over his shoulder back at her, “Isaiah, but they call me Zay. What about you, gorgeous?”

When he gestured at a box near her, she knelt to open it, pulling at the tape along its seams. From the corner of her eye, she noticed him pause and a small, smug smile crossed her lips.

"Isaiah…" she repeated slowly, letting his name roll off her tongue. "But they call you Zay. Okay. Noted." With the box open, she lifted it and moved to place it down beside him. “I’m Peggy Jean, but I usually just go by Peg. Either is fine unless you come up with something you like better.”

He turned to move towards the box she had just opened and moved some of the stuff out and took a second to set it up. He thought about what she was saying before he chuckled a bit because of her name. Peggy Jean.

He stood up from the box and looked at her with a bit of a smile, ”Can I call you Pegs? You know how black folk like to add s to the ends of words for no reason.”

There was a moment where he was about to hold his hand out, but he stopped. “You new here Pegs?”

Peg scrunched her nose. Well, she told him he could call her anything, so she'd go with it. "Alright." She conceded.

"Yeah, I transferred in from community college. Long story, but finally got to leave Woodlawn - me and my brother. It's a little city in Tennessee, lotsa old houses and farmland. Not a whole lot going on." She gave a small shrug.

“I know bout Woodlawn, you a country girl fasho,” he stated with a bit of a chuckle as he felt his pocket vibrate, but ignored it, giving Peggy all of the attention, ”Our QB in high school transferred in from Woodlawn. Boy could he slang a rock.”

He laughed a bit before realizing if she transferred in from community college, she might be closer to his age, ”So what you transferring as a ….freshman?”

Hm. She knew he sounded like home. "You must be a TN boy yourself? ...Not too many folk familiar with Woodlawn." She smiled lightly. "I mean, you sound like it."

She shook her head. "Absolutely not," she answered, tone appalled. "Even the brief idea of starting over is scary." She chuckled. "I'm a senior; finishing up this year… Hopefully." She paused. "What about you?"

“Oh you can hear it huh?” he asked a bit with a chuckle in regards to his accent. That was something he could never hide, even when he was doing his best to speak proper english without an accent. That drawl still dripped from every word, “I ain’t close to Woodlawn or nothing, but I’m a Chatt boy through and through, fasho.”

Another chuckle escaped his lips when she seemed appalled, which was good news for him. No freshmen rule was still strong in tact for him and he was glad he didn’t have to make an exception for the beautiful woman before him, ”I’m a Junior. Still got another year after this, but you know. No rush. Hopefully I can get my music career off before I even graduate.”

"Mhm," she nodded with a smile. "I know," she started in reference to the distance, "you're bordering Georgia and I'm almost up in Kentucky."

He then mentioned being a junior and a small giggle left her. "Oh? So you's a baby," she teased lightly. "Lemme guess: you're--" Before Peg could finish her statement, there was a sudden downpour of water.

She shrieked at the unexpected feeling as the cold liquid washed over her and began clinging her clothing to her skin. Meanwhile, her hair saturated and weighed down in limp crinkles. She wiped her face with her hand to rid of the running droplets although more only continued to flow.

"What's going on? Do we need to leave?" She knew it was probably a dumb question - he likely didn't know any more than she did - but the words had fallen out instinctually.

He was listening to her speak until he felt a drop on his head. He blinked a few times before looking up and catching a face full of water as if a sudden downpour had begun.

He watched everyone scatter to make sure the electronics were saved, but Zay didn’t. It wasn’t his, and he was going to get electrocuted for the sake of the school. He paid tuition, they’d be alright.

When Peggy questioned what they should do he thought a second about Saruh and how bad she’d be upset and only chuckled. “Poor Giannis.” He moved over to her and grabbed her hand, ”Just come with me!” he told her pulling her towards the tunnels to get to the locker rooms, which he had guessed right didn’t have the same sprinkler issue. He moved to where the clean towels were and tossed her one.

34031269352_a9aa4888ac.jpg
Too busy fretting over the water that soaked its way further into everything, Peg didn't even notice when Zay grabbed her hand. She blindly followed - near literally.

When they stopped in the anteroom, Peg wiped her hand across her eyes, ridding of the water then pulled out her hair tie to wring her hair. She briefly thought about her brother, wondering if he had gotten caught in the water as well and hoped otherwise. Though, she was pulled from her thoughts when Zay tossed her a towel and she grabbed it reflexively, albeit a bit clumsily. "Thanks."

She finally looked around as she dried herself off, starting with her arms then working on her torso. She noticed they were in a locker room, which was actually perfect because this wasn't cutting it... Without really thinking, she pulled her tank top over her head and wrung it out as well, more water falling to the floor, before blotting her skin with the towel.

She started pulling her shirt back on as she spoke, "Well, at least we know if there was a real fire, it doesn't stand a chance. We'd drown before we burn." She then pulled her phone from her back pocket, drying it with the towel as well and hoping for the best as she tried checking the time. There were milliseconds of hesitance before the screen flashed its display. She sighed in relief before returning her sights to Zay.

“Hey, I’mma get going, but see you around some time?” She flashed him a hopeful smile.

He nodded to her as she spoke, ”I mean, I’ll take drowning over being burned a live, though I guess we’d need to ask them witches…alleged witches back in Salem which they prefer. ”There was a chuckle that escaped his lips as he watched her get ready to head out and he thought for a second.

“Yeah, maybe even tomorrow? Just let me know.”
