Ivan frowns hearing Percival's question to Ramirez. He takes the paper of the holes quest off the board. He inhales before saying with a not so booming voice of his own:
"Alright, who wants to come with me?"

Ramirez raised a hand and grabbed Percival's too. "We'll go! Heheh what quest is it lad?!?" He got up and gestured to xenophon to. "Wanna come wit us too? Have a big newbie outing eh?"

“H-hey, wait-“ Percival’s voice pitched as Ramirez volunteered them all for… well, who-knows-what. “Shouldn’t we have asked that before agreeing to go?”

Stan brought over the appropriate paperwork, quill and ink for Cate to sign, assuming she was here to join the Guild.

((Lol! 😂 I forgot to say - Xenophon & Ivan could technically do both quests, if they set out on different days. 😉 ))

Xenophon reflected on Ramirez's words. Couldn't stand being on a boat for a month? Try being at sea for a year. That was how long my people were wandering after they left the Republic until they found a permanent home in Dreema. Their fleet could drop anchor in port cities and do trade, but there would be no welcome. Eventually, "Move on. You're not welcome here." Minotaurs were simply not desirable countrymen. Elves and dwarves were more preferable company.

Xenophon listened to Ivan and Ramirez try to persuade him to go to the farm because he should at least listen to their appeal rather than bluntly decline. Once he had an opening, he shook his head, "I appreciate the offer. Regrettably, I have decided to pass on that mission. Rather, I intend to travel with this Professor Hatkins to these ruins because my skills may be put to more effective use. I do need to find comrades though." If my brother was here, he would probably would have chosen to find Fifi. He likes dogs. A smile forms on his snout again. Before moving to Dreema, my people had never seen a dog before.

He looked around and towards the Yard because his mind was at work. Xenophon pondered who would be suitable candidates to join him. If Cate does join the Guild, a learned mage would be welcomed. Perhaps Alienor also? His brain struggled to form a team because he had never done so, but he knew enough to know that a team shouldn't be made of all greenhorns. There needs to be a healthy blend between the inexperienced and the experienced. Also, an even number to set up suitable watches. Choices, choices. Who else here would like to interact with a Professor or traverse catacombs or both?

"Alright!" Ivan grinned at Ramirez. "It is this one." He holds up the 'Holes' quest.

Cate was just... sitting there and looking at Ivan who steals away the people she was talking to.

Percival read the quest details aloud from Ivan’s slip of paper.

“… a mole perhaps?” He assumed. Father was always at war with those things as they liked to dig up the ornamental lawns.

“Doesn’t sound so difficult…” Which was possibly why the reward value was so low… not that he cared about the coin.

Ramirez looked a lil down that the minotaur didn't want to join them, maybe the quest was below their standard. Shrugging he clomped over to Ivan, "You a fresh face ere too. Names Ramirez." He offered his hand out.

Let the fun begin!

Lady Arabella continued to watch the room, surveying the faces she saw, both new and old. As she watched, she partook in her refreshments, always making sure to feed the great black bird that stood by her on the headrest of the seat. Her watch continued on until her eyes snagged on a particular new face. She was a woman, but she saw them all the type, but what struck her was how she looked. She looked beautiful, regal even. Perhaps this lady is from high society. The only way to make sure it to check.

"My, my, what an interesting woman. Why don't we take a closer look?"
She said to her familiar as she got up from her chair. The little lady of hell grabbed her drink and sauntered off towards the lady who caught her attention. She tapped her shoulder to get her attention.

"Hello dear. You're new to the guild, correct? Well, my name is Lady Arabella Eion Donovani, and this,"
she said, indicating to the raven "is my familiar, Dantalion. It is a pleasure to meet you." With this, she curtsied, a smile crossing her cherry-coloured lips.

49de1515094c4123e33ace8ac599baf4.jpegRuby took the rum from Barry, "Here's a tip-" shuffling in her side pockets for spare change, stopping immediately after she realized she was broke. Nodding her head to Barry, "Once I get a quest, you're the first dwarf I'll be tipping." taking a sip, she turned her attention back to the flame, "Nice to meet you, Akuma. I'm Ruby." She paused to take another sip of her drink, not paying attention to how intoxicated she was, "I hope too. I don't really have a plan. Did you guys pick a quest yet?"

Taking yet another sip, she spotted a girl coming making her way to her. Watching the girl as she talked, Ruby couldn't take her eyes off her. She looked so well dressed. Ruby contemplated talking to her; even the air she breathed probably cost more than hers, not to mention she was way past tipsy, "Hi, nice to meet you, beautiful. I'm Ru, and this is Aku." She pointed to the flame boy, taking another sip of her rum zoning out she looked back at him, "If I touched you would it hurt?" Remembering she was talking to the cute girl she turned back, "Yeah, I'm new! Could you help me out? Do we randomly pick a small team to do a quest with or?"

Her ears snagged at the word beautiful, almost slipping out of her refined manners. She turned her attention briefly to Akuma, the man that was made of flames, greeting him as she did with the lady in front of her, Ru. She turned toward Ru again and spoke,
"My, my, don't you know how to charm people, darling,"
she mused, looking up at her with a grin.

As she suspected, Ru was a new member of the guild. Perhaps she would take her under her wing?
"I thought so. I would have noticed you by now had you been a member of the guild,"
She nodded before adding,
"I would be happy to help you, my dear."

"When questing, you can either join a team who is doing that quest or you create your own by recruiting people."
The lady turned and pointed towards the board littered with papers, quests.
"Let us take The Ruins of Bal’dak quest as an example. If you wanted to take that quest, you would either join a team that is forming for that quest or you decide to recruit a team. The choice as to who you work with is yours as long as you don't wander out alone. We don't want you hurt, do we?"

As Ivan and Ramirez talked, Percival read some more of the quests listed on the board behind them. There was no indication of how difficult the quests would be, or what monsters they might be facing, but he presumed the jobs offering more coin might pose a greater challenge.

“What about this one?” He said, gesturing to the ‘Cursed Village’ quest. There was no reward listed, but it seemed the most urgent… and concerning.

Xenophon had remained standing by the bulletin board so he could reflect on the missions. Although it was true that he had made up his mind, it suited him to ruminate on the other quests to consider how they might be approached. Teacher is a very wise male. Ovid's background was very removed from being warrior caste like my clan since he was Baeligni and many of their clan and vassal clans were in physician or cleric roles, but he and Father could discourse for hours on end on military strategy and history.

Back in the days when his people lived by a caste system, Baeligni would guide worshipers in their temples and Calix would guard them with their lives and slay any insane enough to violate the sanctity of the shrine should it come to that. This is why his clan symbol was a gladius wrapped in flames. Even I have been called upon to knock a few insolent heads around. A grim smile on his face because the first time he did so, the male he subdued did not stir until the following morning. It is a grave thing to cross a Calix when on duty at a temple. One would have to be insane.

Speaking of insanity, Percival had pointed out The Cursed Village mission. Xenophon told the other recent arrival, "It would have to be a curse. Doubtful that so many males would leave under their own volition." If in some way I found myself willingly wedded to a woman, I would not break my vow. "Could be some literal man-eating creature or plant that is giving a pheromone that only attracts males. Imagine being eaten by a plant that is as big as an elephant. If there is no sign of a struggle, that would be my guess."

Xenophon's large nostrils widened as he took a deep breath, "It is not just deciding which mission to go on, it's deciding who should go. Since we almost are all new to one another, it will be difficult to gauge how our skills will complement each other. It is not that I consider the other assignments beneath me or I think they are too challenging, I just think I am more suitable to go with Professor Hatkins to the Ruins. Based on my limited knowledge of those here, I am trying to decide who else would be appropriate. I see a future time, after completing several quests, when we would be able to determine who is suitable for which type of mission more readily."

Percival grimaced as he imagined what Xenophon was describing. He also made a mental note to source a clothespin from somewhere (for his nose), should he take on that quest.

“… man-eating? Have you ever seen such a thing?” He asked, referring to the elephant-sized carnivorous plants.

Percy had found a compendium of books about monsters and demons in the library back home, but they were soon confiscated. Seemed his tutor thought they were an indecent distraction from his usual studies, so the teen’s knowledge about such creatures was lacking.

Placing her empty cup on the table, "Charm? Please, you flatter me." Seeing how Arabella was kind enough to explain the system, she was the real charmer. Listening to her intensely as she looked over to where Arabella was pointing, "No, I promised someone I wouldn't die, so that would be good at all." she nervously laughed at the thought of the many ways she could end up dead. "Arabella, will you take on a quest? If you don't mind, I'd like to join you. You probably much more experienced than I am in all this." She said, hopping off her chair.

The little lady of hell let out a small laugh, placing the back of her hand over her mouth as she did so. Ru's personality did charm her. Perhaps she would take her under her wing? It wasn't a bad option for Lady Arabella either. It gave her company outside of her patron, something that was quite needed.

Just as she thought about it, Ru had asked to go questing with her. Very well. She would oblige.
"I would love to help. How about take a look at what awaits us beyond these doors, shall we?"
She asked, before taking a sip of her red wine, finishing up the last dregs of scarlet.

The lady pivoted on her heel and began to make her way to the quest bulletin. Looking for any job that would recompense them well while being fairly manageable.
"Hmmm, we have a few options on our hand here. I think we could either go for the escort mission or the missing one. Although I am a little concerned about such ruins, we will be handsomely rewarded. What do you say?"
she explained, not turning as she spoke.

Percival politely took a step back to give the two ladies (Arabella and Ruby) more room to read the board. His back bumped into something, or rather somebody - Beryl. He apologised to the Half-Orc, but she wafted a dismissive hand at the Rookie.

Beryl was looking at the quest slips herself. She liked to keep tabs on which of her Hunters were heading out where, and offer them advice should they need it.

God sure is unfair. She sighed, contemplating her existence. Her eyes landed on a boy who seemed younger than he attempted to back away, stumbling back and hitting Beryl; she couldn't help but laugh, "You ok?"

Making room for him between Arabella and herself, she ushered him over, "You can stand here."
Looking back at Arabella, "I like the way you think." Seeing how she chose the two most financially beneficial quests, it would have been a problem if she went with the "Holes."

Just imagining the horrible sight of Arabella and herself hauling around turnips made her stomach turn.
Arabella voiced her discomfort with the Ruines, but Ruby didn't see why. "Let's do the Ruines then. 30 is better than 10." Smirking as she looked back at the quest.

Percival had asked Xenophon an interesting question. The minotaur replied, "I have not because I have not traveled much beyond my homeland. I lived in the Aldebaran region of Dreema until I was 14 when I entered the royal scribe academy in the capital city of Poderyn. There, I lived in a boarding house. Fall session, home for for the winter, spring session, then back home again for the summer for the next four years and then remaining until the city magistrate decided to retire. I was the only minotaur at the academy. Back home in Aldebaran, humans are seldom seen. Now it was the reverse to the extreme. In all my years in the capital, the only minotaur I saw was my reflection. I got along fine enough with my fellow scribes, but that was out of a professional courtesy. Friendship outside the academy was not in the stars, so I was always on my own during our days off. I enjoyed watching contests in the coliseum. Not as grand as those back home because humans take greater care to not hurt opponents too much, but they were still enjoyable to watch. I loved the wrestling matches the most. I got top scores in that style of combat." He realized that he was getting off track and wanted to return to the original question about elephant sized plants, "Many times, I would wander the library or watch players in the theater or walk through the royal gardens. Our sovereign's garden has a wide range of plans. Mostly roses, but the garden does have a rare corpse flower that's twice as tall as I am. If a flower can get that big, I suppose a carnivorous plant could still exist. The library did have mosaics full of strange animals and plants and one was clearly a plant like the one I said. Anything is possible. Always unexpect the expected. My teacher Ovid was fond of that saying. Father's was 'Strong horns, stronger mind.'"

Xenophon's ears picked up cherished words. He turned to the two women, "You are interested in escorting Professor Hatkins to the ruins also?" He placed his meaty hand over his heart to introduce himself to them, "Xenophon yios Calix of Aldebaran." That's a potential team of three but was that a sufficient number given the circumstances? Lady Carmina had many in her retinue when travelling, at least a couple dozen. I don't see the entire guild joining considering that there are other quests.

Xenophon turned to Beryl, "Mistress, how many comrades do you suggest for the escort mission?"

Adventure awaits!

Ru's laugh caught her attention, and she turned around only to be greeted by a young man who had accidentally bumped into Beryl as he stepped back.
"Please make sure you watch your step. A clumsy move while adventuring could be your last."
She advised with a polite smile. When you go on quests, one cannot be too careful. Ruins contain pitfalls, forests contain monsters, and villages contain hags. You watch where you go and pay attention to the world around you, lest you become a creature's meal of choice.

She turned her attention back to Ruby.
"Very well. We will venture into the ruins! I do urge you to be careful. Many creatures lurk within the shadows. I doubt they'll be happy about our intrusion."

Soon her attention shifted toward a minotaur. It was an uncommon sight for sure, but she had grown used to the strange ensemble of this Inn. It appeared that he was also taking the same quest they were.
"Yes, we actually are. Lady Arabella Eoin Donovani. It is a pleasure to meet you Xenophon,"
she said with a smile.
"And this,"
she said indicating towards the great black raven that rested on her shoulder,
"Is my familiar, Dantalion. I am also accompanied by the lovely Ru."
She added, winking towards her companion.

"Ah, proprietress Beryl. A pleasure as always. I see new faces have made their appearance. You wouldn't mind us taking this quest?"
She inquired.

Percival sheepishly smiled at the two ladies before resuming his place back at the board. That’s twice he’d accidentally made of fool out of himself. He wasn’t usually so clumsy, or perhaps he was just used to others maintaining their distance.

He didn’t mind as Xenophon spiralled off-topic. He enjoyed hearing about the Minotaur’s life and experiences, and all the foreign lands Percy had only ever seen on battle maps.

“Corpse flower…” The teen repeated the peculiar plant name. It sounded rather macabre, but fascinating all the same.

Beryl looked at each of the Hunters as they talked and asked their questions. “That quest’ll take you beyond Baylin’s Wall… where all manner of beasts roam freely. It won’t be easy...” The Half-orc wasn’t sure if the newcomers could handle such a perilous expedition, but at least Arabella would be accompanying them.

“Shouldn’t we help the villagers of Darby first?” Percival spoke up. “It sounds serio-“

“No.” Beryl interrupted. There were a few things about that particular quest that didn’t sit right with the Half-orc, not to mention the lack of pay.

“Ramirez-“ She turned to the seasoned Hunter and jerked her head back in Percival’s direction. “Take care of Birthday Boy here. I don’t want to have to console another grief-stricken mother this week.” She sighed tiredly.

Ramirez looked up and gave Beryl a lil salute. "Sure thing boss, can't go having the new recruits perish now. Bad for the guilds rep." He clomped his way to Percy, "cmon, how bouwts ya do this one with me and Ivan. We can also come back to that other one later when the crew is settled in a bit." He patted Percy's head and ruffled his hair with his bear paw of a hand.

Percival attempted to tidy up his coal-black hair after being petted like a hunting hound. He looked frustrated about delaying the Darby quest. Some holes in a farmer’s field seemed pretty unimportant in comparison.

“… very well.” He reluctantly agreed, after a bit of encouragement from Ramirez (and a hard stare from Beryl). “We should set out before sunrise. I read that moles are more active in the morning… when it’s quiet.” A quick whack to the poor critter’s head and they could be done and off to Darby by lunchtime... maybe.

"Nice to meet you Ivan. I am Pri- Per-Percival." The teen muddled his words as he straightened up from a bow. "... I like your horns."

Arabella too appears to be a magic user. Xenophon was used to ravens because King Jojin had a menagerie of birds. He was very fond of them and the only other animals that he cherished just as much were cats. When not at court, or observing meetings, or at his studies, he was tending to his birds. In a frigid room of his own design, he fed his penguins. Out in the field, he practiced falconry with red-tailed hawks. At court, one of his ravens was not too far away from him. Many times, it was Zephyr which was his favorite. "it is an honor to meet you three."

Xenophon listed to the Hall's Mistress and wasn't sure how he should respond. He didn't want to seem presumptuous in a way that might convey that he was underestimating the dangers attached to the escort mission. He nodded, "Acknowledged." It seemed an appropriate response. He still wondered how many should be in the retinue and turned his attention to the prospective comrades, "That's three so far. I would say at least one more since even numbers work out best for watches. I am not including the Professor since we are the ones doing the escorting. Thoughts Lady?"
