Icy fingers gripped my arm in the darkness. No. I suddenly started to fear if I'd be able to flee. No.

"My my, you have been caught, it appears," whispered a mysterious voice. What was going on? "Trying to get in with the Horai?"

The Horai. They were a famous group in the city, known for their wealth and private city events. Many had tried to become one of them. It was worthless, I knew. That is, to try and "get in" with them. But why would the voice ask a question like that? What did the Horai have to do with this? The grip seemed to tighten on my wrist. I winced in pain. After a moment of silence, it- the voice- spoke again.

"I ought to turn you in to them. You can pay for your actions," murmured the soft voice. It was cunning, it was soft, it was unnaturally friendly. "Isn't that right, friend? As a good friend, I'll escort you myself. Does that sound good?" it questioned. I struggled to break free of the grasp.

"Ah!" Before I knew it, I cried in pain. "Let me go! I don't want in with the Horai!"
Is

"Tsk tsk," it taunted. "Let's not lie, shall we?" With that last question, I could hear a boot clunking on the cold floor. Heavy breathing became audible. I could feel the breathing touching down on my neck. Suddenly, the hand lets go of me. I look around. This would have been a perfect opportunity to escape. But I'm cornered, literally. I'm backed up into a corner with nowhere to run.

Shhhhkkkk! Shhhhkkkk! What was that? It sounded terrible, whatever it was. With my remaining hand, I slammed it against my right ear. Wait, I know what it was. It's metal. That was so obvious. It's the same noise that I hear when I throw a fork into the sink. Shhhhkkkk! Agh, it's so noisy. Suddenly, sparks flew into the air. It's all clear. The source of the voice is lighting a fire. Right on cue, a bright fire ignites, and the darkness scatters, bolting away.

The fire is burning on a silver stick. A black gloved hand is holding the other stick. The hand drops it, and it clatters on the floor. The hand escapes back into the darkness. What seemed like a second later, it reemerges with a lantern. The other hand carefully brings the flaming stick, and lights the lantern. All of the darkness still there dies out. I can now see the person.

The entire figure is robed in black cloth. There's a silver metal belt, holding various objects. There's a sharpened stick on it. But that's about all. At the bottom, just under the end of the robe, there are two large silver boots. Boy, they're huge. It's like a giant could fit in them. My gaze follows up the body.

As I had observed before, the figure has two hands, with black gloves. Along with the robe, the figure is wearing a midnight blue cape. It's quite long, matter of fact. It stretches several feet from the boots. I look up, at where the face should be.

I expected to see a creepy hood that conceals the man's face. I mean, we see it all the time in movies. It's sort of the case, I suppose. There is a black hood that covers the back and the sides of the figure's head, but not the front. I can see the front clearly. There's a mask. No surprise there. It's covering where the face should be. But it's strange. The mask is a blinding shade of white. It has two "|-|" marks where the eyes should be. The mouth looks sinister. It has a mark like this: "\_____/". It sends a chill down my back. But right where the eyebrows should be is a "\" and a "/". Horrifying, sinister I say.

"Come here, and I won't hurt you." What a lie. The voice echoes through the room. "Now now, we haven't a need to go through this kind of trouble." Time to think about my getaway.

I punch the lantern out of the gloved hand, punching the hand too. "FOOLISH CHILD!" booms the voice. "AH!" it cries out. The figure is stumbling about, looking for the lantern. But it's too late. The glass instantly shatters. Luckily, it stays in one place. The frame rolls across the floor. A small fire burns, before it fades out. Luckily, I think I know how I can flee. After all, I did enter the room just ten minutes ago.

It was strange. I saw this pothole in the city. That's normal, I know. This was a bit different. I was at the city park, enjoying lunch. I took a little stroll, you know, enjoyed my day. Suddenly, I came across a pothole- in the middle of the park! It was just laying there. Right next to the walking path. Peculiar thing is, nobody seemed to notice. Curiosity took over, and I walked in. After running down a flight of stairs, I had approached a corridor. There was a hall ahead of me, with two directions- right or left. I went to the left, before I found myself in a dead end. That's when I was grabbed.

Now, I think I'll leave this hole. I'll be safe in the clear, outside. I snatch the two metal sticks, and run away with them. While I'm running, I scrape them together. Sparks fly into the air. A fire blazes. Perfect. Now I can- what? I approach the flight of stairs I came down. They're still there. But the exit is blocked. Blocked by... dirt? I run up, pushing at the dirt. It won't budge! There's one more option. I didn't want to have to do it. I turn right, and sprint down the path on the right.

Suddenly, purple fire appears, blazing up in candles hanging along the wall. I jump, a bit scared. That was nothing. Clunk, clunk, clunk! A loud echo rings in the background. It's that weird voice. I break into panic mode, and bolt through the hall. I pass statues of strange, deformed figures. What are those doing here?

A moment later, I come to another flight of stairs. I hesitate. Should I do this? The last time I went down a flight of stairs, I ended up in this odd maze, cornered by some sinister voice. "Come child. There's no use resisting!" The voice's echo can be heard. Without even thinking, I dash down the stairs.

I enter a room with five doors. I hear a noise coming from behind me, and I turn around just in time to see a door closing up the way to the stairs. A loud wail sounds from behind the door. I'm... safe. That figure is trapped behind the door. Phew!

Which door to pick? I walk over to the second door from the left. I suddenly notice something I didn't see before. A symbol. It looks like this: (). And another, like this: )(. And "((", and "))". The last symbol is different. It looks like this: \-/. The door that's protecting me from the voice has no symbol. "Open up!" The voice. I can hear it pounding on the door. I must act quickly. Hmm. I'm gonna have to pick a random door. With aplomb, I walk towards the \-/ door. I close my eyes and quickly open the door, dashing through.

I slowly open one eye, and then open the other. I'm in another room. It's... the floor is a giant chessboard. But where are...? Right on cue, thirty-two humongous chess pieces fall from the ceiling. I dodge them, leaping to the side. That was close. Very close. I could have been smashed. I start to make my way across the board, to the other side, when a colossal pawn piece hops forward.

I gasp and, just in time, dive out of the way. Chaos erupts. The other pieces begin to move. First a black pawn moves. Then a white knight. A black bishop. More pieces move. I witness a pawn capture a rook. Shards of the rook fly around the room. Ow! One pierces my leg. I take out the shard, and throw it across the room. The game continues. I attempt to run across the room, dodging chess pieces. What's this? A door!!! I can see a purple glow at the other side. Suddenly, a piece comes up in front of me. The queen.

It's right in front of me. I tremble backwards, and fall back. I'm at the ground. What if it flattens me? As if I called for it, the white queen captures the other queen. I cover my heads, pieces of debris shooting every which way. I use this opportunity to dive through the door.

I hope I'm near the end. I enter a room with a narrow platform. On both sides are moats of some glowing purple substance. It looks dangerous, maybe even poisonous. There are pipes jutting out of the walls, spilling the purple substance. I calmly walk down the platform. It looks like there are no traps, or threats. I have been walking for about five minutes. When will this platform end?

Right on cue, I approach the end of the platform. My eyes stare downwards. A deadly pit of purple liquid. I cough. The substance must be irritating me. My eyes drift upwards. Across from the platform, on the other side of the pit, is a throne. A purple and green throne with jewels embedding the handles and the back. Well, I'm stuck. I guess I just wait here? Clunk! Oh no. It can't be.

"It looks like this is the end, child." I'd recognize that eerie voice anywhere. I turn around, terrified at what I'm about to see. No!! It's that sinister robed figure again. It starts to stomp towards me. I have nowhere to go. I'm assuming that that pit is full of some deadly liquid. I quiver, fearing what is about to happen.

"Farewell," whispers the voice softly. He reaches into his robe, and his hand reappears with a purple dagger. The last thing I see is the purple dagger spiraling in the air towards me.
