Nation Building The Great Nation of Alifon

EccentricFantasy

The mind is a fearsome thing, don't tread on it.
The High Island Kingdom of Alifon

The Creation of the Kingdom

At first there was many tribes living on the islands off the coast of the great continent Illuminai. The villagers lived in peace, unburdened by other people who may try to change their way of life. Over time the people of the continent did establish trade routes with the people who now considered themselves one tribe and called themselves ‘Alifonians’ and their tribe ‘Alifon’. With trade routes now established, soon the tribe had stones to build a proper city. It took twenty years, but the kingdom of Alifon was born. A massive city spanning over many close islands. The city spanned over 47 islands. The castle which held the newly chosen royal family laid on the main island of Syrian. Soon docks were built and the kingdom flurrished. The people of Alifon were known for having the greatest navel people in the world. Living on a mass of islands all people in the kingdom were skilled in sailing. This combined with the required naval service once a person reaches the age of 16 made Alfion the greatest naval force the continent of Illuminai has ever seen. Despite not having metal the people were trained in weapons and sea combat.

The world was introduced to their power when one of the kingdoms on the mainland tried to take over the kingdom of Alifon. The battle was short lived. The invaders could only get to the kingdom by water. As soon as Alfion saw the 200 battle ships of the other nation, they were met with a fleet of over 500 small sail boats of the Alifon navy, each carrying 10 trained soldiers. Within half an how the kingdom of Alfion had claimed all the ships of the attacking force, sending the only 10 surviving soldiers of the 1,000 attacking force back to the mainland in an old canoe as a message to the kingdom, who immediately called off the war. This solidified the power of the great sea kingdom of Alifon.

Alifon’s Military

Military Training

Alifon focuses mainly on navel power since they have to fight on water. All people in the navy are trained in Churikan, the martial art of the people. This martial art is focused on using the movment of a boat to evade an enemies attack and to use the momentum of a boat to increase the power of your own strike. This martial art can be taught with weapons or unarmed.

Each person is also trained in the operation of a Gotaka, a small sail boat only big enough to hold a crew of 10 people. The boats have a main body conected to another equally long balace to the side. The boats are made from tempered coconut wood and the sail is made from coconut fibers. To be trained in this sailing method you are told to sail through the coal reef during low tide. Until you pass this test you are not allowed to sail a Gotaka.

Weapons of Alifon

The people of Alifon are proud and strong. Despite the lack of metal they have developed a mass of weapons that they have turned into a lethal arsenal:
  1. The Teika-This is a staple weapon of the Alifonian’s. This sword is a 5 foot long, tempered coconut wood that is lined on two sides with shark teeth, tied on with thread made from coconut fibers and the fibers are wrapped on the handle. The tip of the sword is squared of and is fery heavy. The way this weapon is wielded is the weight of the tip is put into play. It is weilded on handed. The fighter will swing the sword very quickly around both sides of themselves, extending the arm out when wanting to strike. The weapon combines speed with raw power.
  2. The Geotaken Hook-It is basically that, a hook. These hooks are a massive weapon, made from whale jaws. The hooks weigh 20 pounds and are connected to long ropes of coconut fiber. A weilder will swing the ropes, using the hooks to keep an enemy at bay and keep them in control. This weapon is also used to board enemy boats.
  3. The Primat Bow and Strandger Arrows- The Primat bow is a bow that is just as tall as the weilder. As most weapons were, the bow was crafter from tempered wood and coconut fibers. The Strandger arrows were made with coconut wood, feathers from birds and the stinger of stingrays as the arrow head. The arrow head is then dipped in the poison of the puffer fish to add another lethal factor to the weapon. The size of the bow makes it very accurate. The best of the archers can shoot at an enemy war ship accurately from the beach.
  4. The Trizonian Knife-This is the most simple of the Alifon navy weapons. This knife is simply a massive stingray stinger that has been sharpened and had coconut fibers wrapped around it to make a handle. There are legeneds about this blade. First, you must make your own blade. This means you must kill the ray, harvest the stinger and even make the coconut fiders, also you cannot use any other blade in your life. Second, this blade must draw blood everytime it is unsheathed. So if the blade is drawn and does not draw blood from an enemy, the weilder must cut their own hand with it before it’s sheathed again.

Alifon Garbs

The Alifon people dress in traditional clothing. All of the clothes are made from coconut fibers and fur from the few animals that live on the island. It is simple wear, but it is considdered to be rude to base opinion on someone by clothes.

Alifon Farming and Fishing

There are a total of two million people living on all 47 of the islands of Alifon. While most of them serve in the navy, all of them farm for the kingdom. They believe in helping one another, so they all grow and raise food for each other.

Many people who live in the center of the islands grow coconut trees. The coconuts are used for many things. This includes making the wood objects, making the fibers for nets, clothes and other things. The coconut is also eaten and the milk inside is used for drink and cooking, as are the leaves. They also grow many other berries and fruit.

Those on the outside of the islands fish and farm many animals. Some do fish farming. They created large cages of wood and coconut fiber nets in the water to farm the fish. The list of fish is short, but all the fish have their purpose:
  1. Sturgen-These large fish are farmed for nothing more than food. Every part of this fish is eated. Everything including flesh, organs and even the eggs are eaten. The bones are dried and used for little carvings for children
  2. Algorian Eels-These eels are over 20 feet long. They are also farmed for food, but the hook like teeth are also used for fishing lines.
  3. Gartunan Stingray-These rays are about 50 feet in circumfrance. They are farmed for food, but also for their stingers which is used for weapons.
  4. Puffer Fish-The puffer is raised for one reason and one reason alone, it’s poison. The people keep gallons of it on hand for fighting.
  5. Arzon clams-These clams are raised in the clear lagoons between islands. Unlike most clams their shells are long tubes. They dig themselves into the sand of shallow waters and use their specialized tongues to grab small fish above them. These clams are eaten and their shells are used to make toys for children.

Some people also farm the land animals that live on the islands. This list is very small:
  1. The Drocall-The Drocall is a large mammal. About as tall as a human on all fours. It is hooves and covered in very thick fur. It has massive tusks and lives off the bushes that grow beneath a coconut tree. This beast weighs over 500 pounds and is very fatty. This animal only births one pup every 10 years and lives for 40 years. Given this time frame, the meat is only eaten on special occasions, but the fur is used for bedding and the massive tusks are used to cage the smaller animals.
  2. The Kukren-Kukren are small, flightless birds weighing no more than 5 pounds. They are covered in brown, sandy feathers and have a large beak. The beak is serrated on the top and bottom of it. This is because the Kukren uses its beak to dig up and kill shallow buried crabs for food. Because of this the Kukren are caged on the beach.
The only thing that the people of Alifon fish for are whales. They do this by taking out at least fifty boats. Once a whale is spotted the hook man drives a massive spear made of tempered coconut wood with a tip that is made from a serrated stinger off a stingray that is then tied to the boat. Each boat has one hook man. Once all the hooks are in the whale, the hook man then takes out another spear and begins to stab the whale over and over. This battle can continue for hours. The boats trying to keep the massive animal still while it is being killed. Once dead the boats drag the beast back. The meat will be smoked to preserve it and then split between all people.

The final animals that Alifon is proud of are not used for food. These animals are raised for pets and war.

The first is the Salandrama. These reptiles are massive. On all fours they are about 4 foot tall to the shoulder. They are 8 feet long and slender. These animals are reptile, but bare some resemblance to dogs. These animals are fiercely loyal pack animals. Long ago they were brought in and soon considered the people of Alifon part of their pack. These animals are mainly pets, but some are trained for war. They will ride on the boats up to enemy ships. Once close they spring into action, using their hooked claws to climb up the sides of boats. Once they are on they kill and distract the crew to make it easier for Alifon warriors to board ships. They are powerful, vicious and all around the perfect pet.

Second is the predator bird Evalion. The Evalion is a bird with two pairs of wings. It had a single claw on two of its wings to help them grip onto trees. This combined with their powerful beak, sharp talons and unmatched flying ability makes it the perfect air support. This bird, which weighs about 50 pounds will be sent to an enemy boat as the Alifon boats take off. They will fly to the boat and rip open the sails to stop movement and then attack the crew to add to the kill count.

Religion, Tradition and Lore

Religion

There is but one religion in the Kingdom of Alifon. That is Oceanic. Oceanic is the belief that the ocean is the great mother that gave birth to the world and life itself. The people worship the ocean as the all mother. They treat it with respect and pray to it. This can be seen in their traditions.

Traditions

The religion of Oceanic is steeped within ancient tradition. There are many rituals and such that they believe shows respect to the all mother ocean. The list is very long and the traditions are never abandoned. All of this is listed in the Scripts of Oceanic.

The Holy Scripts of Oceanic.

In the beginning there was only the All Mother. She sat, spread across the world with no one to care for or love. One day she took the sand from within her and created the first life of humanity. She saw the beauty in this human and decided to create somewhere for humanity to live. So, from her depths she pulled the land, creating the first island. When she placed man on the island she saw her fish climb to land and become creatures of it. She saw it was beautiful. She watched the man as he created objects and learned faster than her creatures. She watched him create and watched his emotions bloom. One day she noticed her creation was sad. It was clear he was lonely. Not wanting her prized creation to be sad she pulled sand from within her again. With this she created woman. Seeing them together and their happiness, the All Mother knew her work was done. Before she left them to their own she spoke “My children, thou be the fruit of my labor. I know your compassion and curiosity will take you far. With that I leave you with these commands.” The All Mother then pushed up, from the depths of her, a stone with one flat side that had carved within them the commands the All Mother had left.
  1. Every night before you bed, stand at the All Mothers shore and dance with her
  2. When you are in need of the All Mothers guidance, sit in her shallows and pray
  3. Before a journey or war, bow at her shore and beg for safety
  4. Every year, when the sun and the moon share the sky as equals, gift the All Mother by filling her with Lilly’s and lanterns
  5. Respect her and all her creatures
  6. Do not harm another creature without reason
  7. All life is borrowed from the All Mother. When the life is gone, return the vessel to the mother

These are the seven commandments of Oceanic. The people of Alifon respect these above all.

Geography, Building and Monuments

The kingdom of Alifon is one of the most complex kingdoms ever seen. Despite being one massive kingdom it is spread through a cluster of 47 islands. The main island is the largest. It holds the castle of the Right, the leader of the kingdom Alifon. The castle is a mass of stone and wood, but like all the other parts of the city plants grow in and around all the homes. All of the islands are close enough that you can walk through shallow waters to get to the other islands. On the main island the castle is built in and around a mountain.

Another reason that the kingdom of Alifon is considered untouchable is the coral reef. Surrounding the entire cluster of islands is the Flouriana reef. This prevents the massive boats of the enemy from flanking them because there is only one entrance into the reef, so the people have the advantage.

On top of the great mountain is the Pyramid of the Mother. This small pyramid is only about 20 feet tall. This is considered the most holy place. It was built over a hot spring that the people believe is only there because that is where the mother watched her creation flourish. Inside the pyramid there are four pillars that stand around the spring. The pillars each have a statue of what they believe the mother would look like as a human, all facing the spring. The people let the plants grow within through the mothers water spring and the sun that bleeds through the hole in the top of the pyramid. Inside the spring lay twin catfish. One of ocean blue color, the other of emerald green. The people believe they are messengers for the All Mother and if they ever disappear, the All Mother will have given up on them.

There are only four other holy places in the Alifon kingdom, The Four Spires. First is the spire of the west, signal of earth and fortitude. Second is the spire of the south, signal of fire and tenacity. Third is the spire of the east, signal of air and power. Final is the spire of the north, the most powerful of the spires, signal of water and faith in the mother. Each spire is made of pure obsidian. They are then surrounded with the element they represent. These spires are meant to provide a connection to the mother. They are simply where the people sit to look to the mother.
